you_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n you_o shall_v live_v etc._n etc._n which_o all_o imply_v the_o working_n of_o god_n in_o the_o believer_n to_o be_v such_o as_o do_v not_o so_o take_v in_o and_o necessitate_v man_n work_v but_o that_o they_o may_v possible_o sin_n against_o he_o and_o work_v evil_a yea_o why_o else_o say_v he_o grieve_v not_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n if_o god_n working_n so_o include_v and_o necessitate_v our_o working_n in_o his_o work_n that_o we_o can_v grieve_v he_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v a_o evident_a case_n that_o the_o holy_a man_n in_o who_o god_n by_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n do_v work_v the_o to_o will_v and_o the_o to_o do_v yet_o do_v sin_n against_o he_o and_o that_o not_o mere_o of_o infirmity_n or_o for_o defect_n of_o his_o work_n but_o against_o and_o contrary_a to_o his_o work_n in_o they_o grieve_v and_o quench_v he_o that_o wrought_v in_o they_o isa_n 63_o 10._o as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o david_n sin_v the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o believer_n in_o this_o matter_n so_o as_o may_v be_v fit_o represent_v by_o the_o case_n of_o israel_n of_o old_a in_o respect_n of_o the_o canaanite_n when_o bring_v into_o canaan_n they_o have_v the_o present_a of_o god_n with_o they_o and_o such_o furniture_n of_o strength_n and_o defence_n afford_v they_o thereby_o so_o as_o they_o may_v have_v keep_v they_o under_o and_o it_o be_v their_o own_o great_a neglect_n of_o improve_n the_o advantage_n of_o god_n presence_n and_o help_n with_o they_o who_o subdue_v their_o enemy_n under_o they_o both_z giving_z they_o will_v and_o courage_n to_o fight_v they_o and_o in_o their_o fight_n efficacy_n of_o subdue_a they_o if_o they_o let_v or_o suffer_v they_o to_o reign_v over_o they_o as_o well_o as_o it_o be_v great_a imprudence_n in_o respect_n of_o themselves_o yet_o they_o may_v possible_o make_v league_n and_o confederate_a with_o they_o and_o so_o provoke_v god_n to_o withdraw_v from_o they_o and_o leave_v they_o to_o their_o power_n so_o as_o to_o become_v servant_n and_o tributary_n to_o they_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o believer_n god_n work_v in_o he_o the_o to_o will_v and_o the_o to_o do_v in_o his_o listen_n to_o he_o and_o in_o his_o strength_n and_o furniture_n of_o grace_n give_v he_o may_v mortify_v sin_n and_o not_o let_v it_o reign_v in_o his_o mortal_a body_n yet_o this_o grace_n do_v not_o work_v so_o compulsive_o and_o irresistible_o or_o so_o to_o enforce_v and_o work_v his_o obedience_n to_o it_o as_o that_o he_o can_v neglect_v it_o and_o by_o neglect_v it_o confederate_a with_o sin_n and_o provoke_v god_n to_o withdraw_v himself_o and_o leave_v he_o to_o sin_n dominion_n god_n indeed_o give_v more_o grace_n yea_o more_o than_o there_o be_v natural_o power_n in_o envy_n or_o other_o lust_n in_o the_o carnal_a spirit_n to_o make_v we_o serve_v they_o such_o as_o by_o which_o we_o may_v deny_v they_o service_n and_o resist_v they_o yea_o mortify_v and_o keep_v they_o under_o though_o not_o be_v without_o molestation_n from_o they_o as_o we_o will_v and_o therefore_o god_n fault_n and_o resist_v man_n that_o yet_o lift_v up_o themselves_o and_o will_v serve_v their_o proud_a or_o envious_a humour_n jam._n 4.5_o 6_o 7._o so_o that_o it_o seem_v notwithstanding_o more_o grace_v give_v they_o man_n may_v possible_o yield_v themselves_o servant_n to_o their_o corruption_n that_o have_v less_o power_n in_o they_o to_o enforce_v their_o obedience_n yea_o and_o that_o be_v '_o the_o reason_n god_n be_v displease_v with_o man_n that_o they_o serve_v they_o be_v there_o not_o more_o power_n in_o god_n grace_n to_o help_v they_o against_o they_o then_o in_o their_o corruption_n to_o enslave_v they_o they_o will_v not_o be_v so_o obnoxious_a to_o or_o worthy_a of_o wrath_n from_o god_n but_o rather_o will_v be_v pity_v and_o help_v by_o he_o except_o where_o have_v put_v away_o more_o grace_n they_o be_v enslave_v again_o by_o their_o corruption_n god_n withdraw_v from_o they_o but_o if_o god_n so_o wrought_v in_o man_n their_o willing_n and_o do_n as_o in_o the_o conception_n at_o first_o mention_v there_o can_v be_v no_o possibility_n of_o any_o believer_n to_o fail_v of_o do_v god_n will_n but_o by_o god_n mere_a voluntary_a first-leaving_a he_o no_o possibility_n of_o let_v sin_n have_v dominion_n over_o they_o or_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o neither_o ground_n or_o need_v of_o any_o of_o these_o or_o the_o like_a exhortation_n sect_n 2._o how_o god_n work_v by_o exhortation_n and_o whether_o his_o work_n in_o man_n to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v be_v by_o and_o through_o the_o exhortation_n to_o â—k_v out_o their_o salvation_n object_n exception_n be_v hereunto_o make_v that_o though_o god_n work_v so_o as_o above_o to_o necessitate_v man_n working_n out_o too_o yet_o exhortation_n to_o work_v out_o our_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o not_o to_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o the_o like_a be_v nevertheless_o needful_a because_o god_n work_v those_o thing_n in_o man_n by_o his_o exhortation_n but_o neither_o will_v that_o stand_v with_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o scripture_n above_o propound_v to_o consideration_n for._n answ_n 1._o god_n use_v not_o to_o principle_n man_n by_o exhortation_n but_o by_o the_o discovery_n of_o his_o grace_n with_o which_o he_o prevent_v they_o and_o put_v in_o principle_n seed_n or_o capacitates_fw-la for_o operation_n 9.10_o psal_n 9.10_o he_o beget_v in_o man_n a_o will_n to_o trust_v not_o by_o exhort_v they_o mere_o to_o trust_v but_o by_o declare_v his_o name_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o know_v it_o and_o then_o when_o he_o have_v so_o principled_a they_o to_o work_v or_o walk_v etc._n etc._n he_o use_v to_o exhort_v man_n in_o that_o power_n and_o strength_n bring_v to_o they_o and_o give_v they_o to_o work_v or_o walk_v and_o act_v forth_o and_o by_o those_o exhortation_n further_o excite_v and_o stir_v up_o and_o put_v forward_o the_o will_n or_o the_o man_n to_o act_v in_o those_o capacity_n forgive_v and_o in_o such_o exhortation_n he_o work_v after_o the_o nature_n of_o divine_o moral_a work_n that_o be_v by_o present_v that_o to_o the_o understanding_n and_o judgement_n which_o afford_v rational_a ground_n for_o the_o willing_a and_o do_v what_o he_o exhorâ—â—o_o and_o therefore_o also_o usual_o before_o or_o however_o with_o those_o exhortation_n lay_v down_o those_o ground_n and_o add_v such_o motive_n which_o present_v to_o the_o understanding_n be_v as_o proper_a mean_n to_o convey_v motion_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o excite_v it_o to_o will_n and_o do_v what_o be_v exhort_v but_o now_o the_o ground_n or_o motive_n here_o use_v and_o present_v be_v such_o as_o be_v interpret_v and_o represent_v in_o the_o sense_n object_v destroy_v the_o exhortation_n and_o take_v away_o all_o the_o motive_n to_o it_o and_o ground_n thereof_o so_o as_o that_o the_o exhortation_n can_v be_v no_o mean_n to_o produce_v the_o thing_n exhort_v to_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o ground_n and_o motive_n use_v to_o enforce_v it_o as_o so_o understand_v the_o exhortation_n be_v that_o they_o will_v be_v always_o obedient_a and_o now_o much_o more_o in_o the_o apostle_n absence_n work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a which_o may_v indeed_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o excite_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o such_o diligence_n and_o obedience_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a iâ—_n with_o all_o they_o be_v make_v to_o apprehend_v need_n cause_n and_o ground_n for_o so_o do_v as_o to_o say_v that_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o they_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v of_o good_a pleasure_n there_o be_v danger_n least_o by_o their_o negligence_n and_o carelessness_n he_o may_v be_v provoke_v to_o withdraw_v his_o operation_n without_o which_o they_o can_v do_v nothing_o and_o so_o they_o may_v fail_v of_o his_o grace_n but_o to_o represent_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o to_o the_o understand_a reason_n and_o judgement_n that_o god_n do_v absolute_o and_o infallible_o work_v so_o in_o they_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v that_o he_o therein_o also_o work_v their_o work_n out_o complete_o and_o inavoidable_o so_o as_o to_o leave_v no_o room_n for_o or_o possibility_n of_o their_o disobedience_n or_o miscarriage_n in_o what_o he_o require_v their_o work_n out_o of_o be_v such_o a_o ground_n of_o security_n certainty_n and_o impossibility_n of_o danger_n oâ—_n miscarriage_n as_o both_o take_v away_o from_o the_o understanding_n all_o conception_n of_o any_o need_n of_o their_o diligence_n and_o render_v it_o inconceiveable_a how_o they_o shall_v be_v negligent_a or_o disobedient_a and_o so_o leave_v no_o room_n for_o their_o fear_n and_o tremble_a otherwise_o then_o as_o unavoidable_o it_o may_v be_v
wrought_v in_o they_o again_o 2._o that_o in_o the_o ground_n and_o motive_n that_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o you_o etc._n etc._n being_n use_v and_o lay_v down_o as_o the_o ground_n and_o motive_n to_o enforce_v the_o exhortation_n as_o render_v a_o reason_n why_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v so_o careful_a be_v as_o represent_v by_o the_o apostle_n rather_o the_o mean_n of_o make_v they_o obedient_a to_o the_o exhortation_n as_o also_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n by_o way_n of_o motive_n to_o induce_v the_o apostle_n so_o to_o exhort_v they_o than_o the_o exhortation_n any_o mean_n by_o which_o god_n work_v what_o be_v assert_v in_o the_o motive_n it_o be_v not_o god_n work_v in_o you_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v by_o my_o exhort_v you_o or_o because_o or_o for_o he_o exhort_v you_o by_o i_o to_o be_v obedient_a but_o because_o it_o be_v he_o that_o work_v in_o you_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v therefore_o be_v you_o obedient_a and_o therefore_o i_o exhort_v you_o work_v out_o your_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a the_o exhortation_n may_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o excite_v they_o to_o work_v out_o not_o a_o mean_n of_o god_n work_v in_o they_o assert_v in_o the_o firm_a before_o the_o superstructure_n be_v build_v upon_o it_o and_o neither_o depend_v upon_o that_o nor_o be_v lay_v by_o it_o but_o the_o superstructure_n be_v lay_v upon_o it_o and_o it_o be_v rather_o as_o a_o way_n or_o mean_n to_o further_o the_o lay_n of_o the_o superstructure_n and_o not_o the_o lay_n of_o the_o superstructure_n a_o mean_n of_o lay_v the_o foundation_n 3._o if_o god_n work_v in_o they_o the_o to_o will_v &_o to_o do_v the_o thing_n exhort_v be_v by_o the_o exhortation_n than_o not_o before_o the_o exhortation_n and_o so_o not_o till_o the_o epistle_n come_v to_o they_o and_o so_o not_o in_o the_o time_n when_o paul_n write_v it_o and_o so_o he_o write_v false_a in_o say_v in_o the_o then_o present_a time_n it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v etc._n etc._n but_o if_o god_n do_v work_v in_o they_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n before_o the_o epistle_n come_v to_o they_o as_o be_v most_o unquestionable_a then_o this_o superadded_a exhortation_n be_v needless_a to_o they_o if_o his_o work_n in_o they_o be_v such_o as_o infallible_o include_v in_o it_o their_o work_n out_o also_o see_v they_o do_v it_o all_o before_o and_o can_v not_o but_o do_v so_o so_o long_o as_o god_n continue_v his_o work_n which_o be_v neither_o make_v long_o nor_o short_a by_o the_o epistle_n write_v according_a to_o that_o sense_n espect_o nor_o depend_v thereupon_o but_o be_v mere_o of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n and_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v his_o good_a pleasure_n to_o cease_v work_v in_o they_o without_o their_o provoke_v he_o to_o it_o as_o to_o it_o they_o can_v not_o by_o that_o interpretation_n provoke_v he_o then_o be_v it_o not_o possible_a that_o they_o shall_v work_v out_o their_o salvation_n much_o less_o upon_o the_o ground_n propound_v by_o the_o apostle_n the_o truth_n thereof_o then_o fail_v and_o without_o that_o assert_v in_o the_o ground_n viz_o god_n work_v in_o they_o his_o exhortation_n will_v avail_v they_o nothing_o so_o that_o that_o interpretation_n render_v the_o exhortation_n needless_a both_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o in_o respect_n of_o they_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n for_o he_o wrought_v so_o before_o and_o of_o good_a pleasure_n and_o therefore_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o they_o see_v he_o work_v their_o work_n out_o so_o as_o to_o effect_v infallible_o their_o whole_a operation_n they_o can_v not_o want_v any_o exciting_a thereunto_o 4._o yea_o if_o god_n so_o wrought_v in_o they_o by_o this_o exhortation_n the_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n will_v not_o all_o the_o other_o exhortation_n be_v needless_a see_v all_o that_o they_o exhort_v to_o be_v include_v herein_o or_o how_o ever_o 5._o then_o must_v this_o and_o all_o other_o exhortation_n be_v obey_v necessary_o and_o no_o faultiness_n in_o believer_n for_o not_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a unless_o that_o god_n first_o fail_v they_o be_v leave_v in_o a_o incapacity_n of_o so_o do_v which_o fail_v of_o his_o also_o consist_v not_o with_o that_o interpretation_n which_o be_v cross_v to_o the_o scripture_n as_o we_o have_v see_v these_o and_o other_o like_a reason_n may_v be_v urge_v against_o such_o a_o sense_n of_o the_o foresay_a say_n and_o against_o the_o objection_n of_o god_n so_o work_v by_o the_o exhortation_n let_v we_o see_v then_o how_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v it_o sect_n 3._o the_o aforesaid_a scripture_n viz._n philip._n 2.12_o brief_o open_v the_o apostle_n have_v after_o diverse_a exhortation_n as_o to_o let_v their_o conversation_n be_v such_o as_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v like_o mind_a or_o to_o mind_v the_o same_o thing_n to_o have_v the_o same_o love_n to_o be_v of_o one_o accord_n and_o of_o one_o mind_n to_o do_v nothing_o out_o of_o strife_n and_o vain_a glory_n but_o in_o lowliness_n of_o mind_n to_o esteem_v each_o other_o above_o themselves_o not_o to_o mind_v their_o own_o commodity_n but_o each_o to_o mind_v the_o good_a of_o other_o etc._n etc._n to_o provoke_v they_o thereunto_o the_o more_o propound_v to_o they_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n his_o self_n abasement_n for_o our_o sake_n and_o the_o great_a glory_n he_o have_v thereupon_o receive_v of_o and_o with_o god_n afterward_o return_v again_o to_o exhort_v they_o further_o even_o in_o the_o consideration_n of_o christ_n suffering_n for_o they_o and_o the_o great_a honour_n &_o dignity_n that_o god_n have_v thereupon_o exalt_v he_o to_o make_v he_o lord_n of_o all_o as_o they_o have_v always_o obey_v not_o only_o in_o his_o presence_n with_o they_o but_o now_o much_o more_o in_o his_o absence_n to_o work_v out_o or_o accomplish_v their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a press_v that_o exhortation_n further_o with_o this_o reason_n or_o motive_n which_o seem_v to_o have_v special_a respect_n to_o their_o work_n out_o with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a for_o it_o be_v god_n 8.10_o 11._o and_o to_o do_v or_o to_o be_v operative_a and_o effectual_a of_o good_a or_o of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n may_v be_v thus_o understand_v viz._n 1._o with_o reference_n to_o his_o prevent_a operation_n if_o we_o shall_v apply_v it_o also_o to_o they_o as_o there_o be_v operation_n prevent_v believer_n in_o what_o they_o be_v to_o do_v as_o well_o as_o to_o other_o man_n to_o they_o his_o work_n in_o they_o forasmuch_o as_o during_o the_o time_n of_o his_o work_n in_o they_o the_o to_o will_v and_o the_o to_o do_v they_o must_v according_a to_o that_o conception_n of_o it_o both_o will_n and_o do_v and_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n and_o so_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o to_o displease_v he_o except_o the_o very_a inhaerency_n of_o corruption_n in_o they_o and_o its_o proper_a lusting_n against_o he_o and_o his_o grace_n which_o yet_o while_o god_n so_o work_v can_v not_o hinder_v god_n so_o work_v and_o so_o by_o consequence_n not_o their_o work_n out_o he_o work_v that_o also_o effectual_o and_o necessary_o in_o his_o work_n in_o they_o and_o therefore_o why_o shall_v it_o or_o how_o can_v it_o be_v conceive_v it_o shall_v move_v he_o to_o cease_v his_o work_n in_o they_o see_v also_o that_o he_o impute_v it_o not_o to_o man_n that_o sin_n be_v in_o they_o and_o war_n against_o they_o or_o what_o they_o do_v by_o mere_a force_n of_o that_o so_o as_o it_o be_v not_o they_o but_o sin_n that_o dwell_v in_o they_o as_o be_v employ_v rom._n 7.16_o 17_o 20._o and_o 8.1_o 2._o nay_o than_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n to_o they_o have_v be_v needless_a see_v they_o can_v not_o do_v otherwise_o though_o he_o have_v not_o exhort_v they_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o god_n do_v work_v in_o they_o the_o to_o will_v and_o the_o to_o do_v what_o his_o grace_n believe_v move_v they_o to_o before_o this_o epistle_n come_v to_o they_o much_o less_o shall_v he_o have_v exhort_v they_o to_o have_v wrought_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o that_o upon_o that_o account_n that_o god_n work_v in_o they_o to_o will_n and_o do_v if_o his_o so_o work_v in_o they_o contain_v in_o it_o and_o necessary_o include_v their_o work_n out_o their_o own_o salvation_n for_o 2._o in_o so_o exhort_v they_o there_o be_v employ_v by_o he_o both_o that_o there_o be_v something_o for_o they_o to_o do_v which_o they_o have_v liberty_n and_o power_n give_v they_o to_o do_v and_o which_o be_v needful_a for_o they_o to_o do_v and_o also_o that_o there_o be_v some_o possibility_n either_o by_o not_o do_v it_o or_o by_o not_o do_v it_o so_o as_o they_o ought_v they_o may_v provoke_v god_n to_o displeasure_n against_o they_o and_o so_o to_o withdraw_v his_o working_n in_o they_o why_o else_o shall_v they_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a but_o if_o god_n work_v in_o they_o to_o will_n and_o do_v do_v include_v and_o contain_v within_o his_o proper_a operation_n their_o very_a work_n out_o to_o then_o be_v there_o nothing_o for_o they_o to_o be_v exhort_v to_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o exhortation_n contain_v in_o it_o the_o matter_n exhort_v to_o much_o less_o can_v there_o be_v any_o room_n for_o fear_n or_o tremble_a lest_o they_o shall_v grieve_v he_o the_o possibility_n of_o that_o be_v take_v away_o by_o the_o manner_n of_o god_n work_v in_o they_o according_a to_o that_o conception_n he_o shall_v according_a to_o that_o have_v rather_o say_v you_o must_v work_v it_o out_o and_o can_v but_o work_v with_o much_o assurance_n and_o rejoice_v yea_o without_o all_o fear_n of_o any_o possibility_n of_o offend_v 3._o nor_o be_v it_o consistent_a with_o other_o scripture_n saying_n which_o mention_n the_o manner_n of_o his_o operation_n or_o imply_v it_o as_o that_o rom._n 6.12_o let_v not_o sin_n reign_v in_o your_o mortal_a body_n that_o you_o shall_v fulfil_v the_o lust_n thereof_o neither_o yield_v yourselves_o instrument_n of_o unrighteousness_n to_o sin_n but_o yield_v yourselves_o unto_o god_n for_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o etc._n etc._n where_o the_o apostle_n plain_o imply_v that_o god_n by_o his_o grace_n so_o take_v away_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n where_o his_o grace_n be_v not_o put_v away_o that_o sin_n can_v command_v and_o enforce_v obedience_n from_o man_n but_o yet_o neither_o do_v it_o so_o necessitate_v obedience_n to_o itself_o and_o the_o resistance_n of_o sin_n but_o that_o it_o be_v yet_o in_o man_n power_n notwithstanding_o grace_n and_o so_o god_n work_v in_o they_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v to_o yield_v their_o member_n to_o sin_n which_o be_v also_o work_v in_o they_o and_o be_v yield_v to_o by_o they_o will_v work_v in_o they_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v what_o they_o ought_v not_o yea_o and_o by_o so_o yield_v their_o member_n to_o it_o they_o become_v subject_a to_o it_o and_o give_v it_o dominion_n or_o rule_n over_o they_o and_o it_o be_v put_v upon_o they_o as_o strengthen_v and_o furnish_v by_o grace_n to_o resist_v sin_n and_o not_o to_o yield_v to_o it_o whence_o such_o say_n abstain_v from_o fleshly_a lust_n have_v no_o fellowship_n with_o the_o unfruitful_a work_n of_o darkness_n but_o rather_o reprove_v they_o if_o you_o walk_v after_o the_o flesh_n you_o shall_v die_v but_o if_o by_o the_o spirit_n
