follow_v close_o he_o that_o will_v be_v content_a to_o grieve_v a_o little_a at_o church_n or_o so_o for_o his_o guile_n and_o out_o of_o the_o present_a evidence_n of_o the_o spirit_n work_v with_o the_o word_n will_v perhaps_o yield_v to_o see_v and_o to_o lament_v his_o hollowness_n but_o let_v the_o matter_n pass_v quick_o and_o take_v no_o more_o pain_n about_o it_o shall_v anger_v the_o sore_a as_o it_o be_v and_o not_o heal_v it_o and_o by_o careless_a neglect_v of_o god_n grace_n in_o such_o motion_n offer_v he_o shall_v cause_v his_o hypocrisy_n to_o fester_v more_o and_o grow_v more_o incurable_a for_o even_o this_o weak_a work_n of_o the_o word_n will_v help_v out_o of_o his_o own_o erroneous_a disposition_n to_o cozen_v he_o and_o to_o make_v he_o too_o soon_o think_v himself_o upright_o and_o so_o he_o shall_v never_o become_v upright_o but_o the_o sorrow_n i_o speak_v of_o must_v be_v a_o settle_a and_o constant_a sorrow_n which_o a_o man_n must_v let_v rest_n assurance_n of_o god_n assistance_n and_o good_a success_n in_o our_o endeavour_n but_o now_o i_o beseech_v you_o all_o that_o be_v member_n of_o christ_n set_v in_o earnest_o and_o with_o a_o good_a courage_n and_o you_o shall_v vanquish_v they_o you_o shall_v more_o and_o more_o prevail_v against_o they_o till_o at_o last_o you_o have_v quite_o overcome_v they_o in_o the_o overcome_v of_o the_o last_o enemy_n which_o be_v death_n if_o we_o do_v labour_n against_o sin_n alone_o in_o our_o own_o strength_n we_o shall_v find_v indeed_o that_o vain_a be_v the_o help_n of_o man_n and_o the_o they_o effectual_a for_o the_o kill_n of_o thy_o lust_n the_o lord_n be_v present_a in_o his_o word_n to_o make_v it_o a_o two-edged_a sword_n to_o cut_v off_o all_o carnal_a affection_n and_o to_o wound_v the_o body_n of_o death_n more_o and_o more_o the_o lord_n be_v present_a with_o thy_o holy_a meditation_n to_o make_v they_o effectual_a to_o weaken_v any_o of_o thy_o sinful_a passion_n faint_v not_o therefore_o but_o stir_v up_o thyself_o to_o work_v with_o god_n in_o those_o holy_a exercise_n &_o know_v that_o thy_o success_n shall_v be_v as_o often_o it_o have_v be_v with_o god_n people_n in_o the_o natural_a battle_n far_o beyond_o thy_o expectation_n and_o of_o the_o matter_n of_o god_n husbandry_n so_o far_o we_o must_v now_o look_v into_o the_o end_n and_o effect_n of_o it_o for_o god_n will_v never_o miss_v of_o his_o end_n though_o he_o often_o miss_v of_o those_o end_n whereto_o his_o action_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n be_v fit_v and_o which_o speak_v after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n to_o our_o capacity_n he_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o intend_v this_o be_v that_o they_o may_v bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n chap._n xvi_o contain_v the_o four_o point_n of_o doctrine_n that_o the_o people_n of_o god_n must_v increase_v in_o fruitfulness_n so_o be_v we_o come_v to_o the_o last_o point_n we_o intend_v to_o speak_v of_o doct._n 4_o better_o the_o true_a christian_a must_v wax_v better_a and_o better_o viz._n that_o the_o true_a branch_n of_o the_o vine_n must_v labour_v to_o increase_v in_o fruitfulness_n every_o true_a christian_a man_n must_v proceed_v and_o go_v forward_o in_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n grow_v better_a and_o better_o and_o more_o and_o more_o abundant_a in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o we_o look_v that_o a_o tree_n the_o long_a it_o grow_v in_o our_o orchard_n the_o more_o and_o more_o increase_v it_o shall_v yield_v we_o in_o like_a manner_n shall_v we_o behave_v ourselves_o towards_o god_n the_o apostle_n peter_n wish_v we_o to_o long_o for_o the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o we_o may_v grow_v thereby_o a_o christian_a be_v like_o a_o young_a child_n that_o suck_v on_o the_o abound_v more_o and_o more_o and_o afterward_o concern_v brotherly_a love_n we_o beseech_v you_o that_o you_o increase_v more_o and_o more_o and_o david_n say_v psalm_n 92.14_o that_o the_o tree_n world_n and_o therefore_o must_v strive_v forward_o to_o perfection_n paul_n himself_o tell_v the_o philippian_n that_o he_o press_v hard_o towards_o the_o mark_n because_o he_o not_o yet_o reach_v it_o and_o wish_v as_o many_o as_o be_v perfect_a to_o be_v so_o mind_v in_o a_o race_n a_o man_n must_v never_o cease_v run_v till_o he_o touch_v the_o goal_n we_o shall_v never_o touch_v the_o goal_n of_o perfection_n till_o we_o have_v deliver_v up_o our_o soul_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n by_o death_n for_o here_o we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n and_o therefore_o can_v do_v nothing_o in_o whole_a hence_o it_o follow_v that_o till_o death_n we_o must_v be_v still_o go_v onward_o when_o a_o man_n have_v attain_v his_o full_a stature_n he_o must_v grow_v than_o indeed_o he_o need_v only_a nutrition_n but_o till_o then_o augmentation_n be_v requisite_a for_o these_o two_o motion_n be_v very_o different_a as_o you_o know_v and_o his_o limb_n must_v become_v great_a and_o strong_a yea_o and_o will_v do_v so_o unless_o disease_n hinder_v now_o we_o be_v but_o stripling_n or_o rather_o infant_n in_o goodness_n in_o truth_n we_o be_v but_o in_o the_o womb_n of_o the_o church_n all_o the_o while_o we_o walk_v in_o this_o world_n our_o death-day_n will_v be_v our_o birth_n day_n and_o then_o we_o shall_v at_o once_o be_v make_v full_a and_o complete_a wherefore_o till_o then_o there_o must_v be_v a_o continual_a addition_n of_o grace_n to_o that_o we_o have_v already_o receive_v indeed_o some_o christian_n in_o comparison_n of_o other_o be_v call_v strong_a man_n as_o even_o of_o infant_n in_o the_o womb_n some_o be_v perfect_a than_o other_o but_o simple_o there_o be_v none_o a_o full_a grow_v man_n bring_v to_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o stature_n of_o christ_n
till_o he_o be_v full_o unite_v to_o christ_n and_o walk_v no_o long_o by_o faith_n but_o by_o sight_n see_v as_o he_o be_v see_v and_o know_v as_o he_o be_v know_v we_o must_v conclude_v then_o to_o be_v walk_v forward_o till_o we_o lie_v down_o in_o grave_n for_o never_o be_v we_o at_o our_o journey_n end_n till_o then_o second_o reason_n 2_o grow_v god_n have_v offer_v they_o sit_v mean_n of_o grow_v the_o lord_n have_v afford_v and_o provide_v we_o sufficient_a mean_n and_o help_v to_o grow_v the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v able_a to_o build_v we_o up_o yet_o further_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n do_v bring_v the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n unto_o we_o to_o be_v our_o spiritual_a food_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o work_v in_o and_o with_o these_o and_o all_o other_o mean_n be_v a_o spirit_n of_o life_n and_o serve_v not_o alone_o to_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o our_o flesh_n but_o to_o quicken_v our_o inward_a man_n also_o till_o we_o come_v to_o be_v perfect_a man_n in_o christ_n and_o have_v his_o image_n full_o renew_v in_o us._n we_o want_v none_o help_v this_o way_n that_o we_o can_v desire_v if_o we_o want_v not_o care_n to_o use_v they_o and_o we_o may_v be_v well_o assure_v that_o he_o which_o have_v provide_v they_o do_v never_o intend_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v provide_v in_o vain_a but_o that_o he_o will_v have_v we_o use_v they_o and_o by_o the_o use_n attain_v the_o fruit_n of_o they_o three_o reason_n 3_o if_o we_o grow_v not_o better_o worse_o if_o they_o grow_v not_o better_o they_o shall_v soon_o grow_v worse_o it_o can_v be_v long_o afore_o we_o grow_v worse_o there_o will_v be_v a_o sensible_a decay_n of_o grace_n after_o a_o little_a while_n if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o addition_n to_o it_o we_o move_v either_o upward_a or_o downward_o and_o we_o can_v long_o hang_v in_o the_o midst_n for_o thing_n that_o do_v but_o tend_v to_o perfection_n and_o have_v not_o yet_o get_v it_o if_o they_o approach_v not_o near_o to_o it_o will_v be_v remove_v further_o from_o it_o if_o the_o fire_n be_v not_o feed_v with_o fuel_n it_o will_v go_v out_o and_o a_o young_a tree_n if_o it_o cease_v shoot_v up_o its_o branch_n do_v quick_o cease_v to_o live_v all_o natural_a motion_n be_v more_o and_o more_o earnest_a towards_o their_o end_n and_o so_o much_o more_o swift_a by_o how_o much_o they_o grow_v near_o to_o their_o proper_a place_n of_o rest_n so_o must_v all_o the_o motion_n of_o goodness_n be_v in_o god_n saint_n last_o of_o all_o reason_v 4_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n here_o glory_n growth_n in_o grace_n will_v procure_v growth_n in_o glory_n shall_v procure_v unto_o we_o a_o growth_n in_o glory_n hereafter_o the_o more_o holiness_n we_o attain_v in_o this_o world_n the_o more_o happiness_n we_o shall_v attain_v in_o the_o other_o world_n every_o dram_n of_o grace_n shall_v be_v reward_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o pound_n of_o glory_n if_o we_o be_v rich_a in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n our_o labour_n shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a in_o the_o lord_n but_o he_o will_v exceed_o plentiful_o requite_v all_o the_o service_n which_o we_o have_v perform_v for_o he_o and_o all_o the_o virtue_n which_o we_o have_v for_o his_o sake_n labour_v to_o get_v and_o exercise_v he_o that_o sow_n liberal_o shall_v reap_v liberal_o he_o that_o sow_n spare_o shall_v also_o reap_v spare_o this_o life_n be_v our_o seedes-time_n that_o to_o come_v must_v be_v our_o harvest_n who_o will_v not_o be_v encourage_v by_o so_o inestimable_a reward_n to_o strain_v himself_o to_o all_o painfulness_n that_o he_o may_v grow_v so_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o grow_v in_o grace_n for_o we_o have_v sufficient_a help_n and_o mean_n it_o be_v profitable_a for_o we_o shall_v grow_v in_o glory_n and_o that_o also_o proportionable_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o be_v not_o yet_o come_v to_o our_o full_a growth_n yea_o it_o be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n so_o to_o grow_v for_o else_o we_o shall_v grow_v worse_o and_o worse_o even_o from_o aught_o to_o nought_o as_o the_o proverb_n speak_v and_o all_o these_o reason_n confirm_v the_o point_n and_o show_v that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n people_n to_o wax_v better_a and_o better_o only_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v whether_o that_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n do_v perform_v this_o duty_n and_o be_v in_o act_n more_o holy_a and_o virtuous_a every_o day_n than_o other_o to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v with_o god_n people_n as_o with_o child_n who_o be_v subject_a to_o many_o sick_a sit_v in_o which_o they_o do_v wear_v away_o and_o even_o lose_v their_o flesh_n and_o strength_n but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o they_o recover_v and_o come_v to_o be_v man_n at_o last_o yea_o and_o strong_a man_n too_o a_o christian_a oftentimes_o do_v go_v backward_o for_o a_o season_n length_n sometime_o god_n people_n for_o a_o time_n do_v grow_v worse_o but_o they_o recover_v and_o become_v more_o humble_a that_o be_v better_o at_o length_n but_o he_o recover_v himself_o feel_v his_o go_v back_o return_v and_o at_o the_o last_o become_v better_a indeed_o though_o not_o in_o his_o own_o feel_n then_o ever_o he_o be_v for_o after_o it_o may_v be_v some_o long_a faint_a and_o fade_v of_o grace_n he_o be_v bring_v back_o with_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o his_o own_o baseness_n than_o ever_o he_o have_v before_o and_o so_o grow_v in_o humility_n grow_v likewise_o in_o all_o grace_n for_o with_o the_o growth_n of_o that_o all_o do_v grow_v though_o perhaps_o he_o may_v not_o live_v to_o do_v so_o many_o excellent_a work_n as_o former_o he_o have_v do_v and_o so_o the_o story_n of_o holy_a writ_n do_v show_v that_o it_o be_v with_o david_n who_o seem_v worse_o after_o his_o settle_n in_o the_o kingdom_n then_o before_o and_o be_v so_o for_o a_o while_n but_o rise_v up_o again_o he_o be_v more_o holy_a than_o ever_o before_o though_o he_o fight_v not_o so_o many_o battle_n as_o before_o chap._n xvii_o contain_v the_o first_o use_n of_o the_o last_o point_n viz._n a_o terror_n to_o they_o that_o grow_v worse_o now_o this_o point_n concern_v the_o branch_n bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n use_v 1_o rather_o terror_n to_o they_o that_o decay_n rather_o serve_v to_o discover_v the_o unhappiness_n of_o those_o man_n in_o who_o no_o such_o growth_n be_v find_v but_o the_o quite_o contrary_a viz._n that_o be_v grow_v backward_o and_o fall_v behind_o hand_n be_v more_o feeble_a in_o all_o grace_n and_o scant_o in_o all_o good_a work_n then_o former_o they_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v the_o minister_n either_o for_o some_o point_n of_o doctrine_n which_o he_o teach_v contrary_a to_o their_o mind_n or_o for_o some_o faultinesse_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o teach_v or_o for_o some_o mis-behaviour_n of_o life_n or_o for_o some_o thing_n or_o other_o against_o which_o they_o can_v allege_v any_o probable_a show_n of_o quarrel_n rather_o then_o that_o they_o will_v not_o seem_v to_o themselves_o to_o have_v cause_n of_o not_o care_v to_o come_v to_o hear_v they_o be_v wont_a to_o read_v much_o and_o pray_v often_o and_o take_v time_n to_o meditate_v upon_o those_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v but_o now_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v either_o quite_o lay_v aside_o or_o very_o seldom_o perform_v once_o they_o be_v abundant_a in_o work_n of_o mercy_n now_o they_o be_v scant_o and_o spare_a former_o they_o be_v lively_a in_o their_o service_n now_o little_o less_o than_o dead_a and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o they_o that_o any_o man_n which_o have_v occasion_n of_o converse_v with_o they_o may_v plain_o perceive_v they_o to_o be_v change_v from_o better_a to_o worse_o o_o this_o be_v a_o lamentable_a condition_n have_v its_o original_n in_o the_o overgrowth_n of_o voluptuousness_n worldliness_n pride_n or_o some_o other_o like_o carnal_a affection_n and_o shall_v have_v its_o issue_n either_o in_o some_o grievous_a sin_n or_o heavy_a calamity_n or_o both_o even_o though_o they_o be_v god_n child_n i_o dare_v not_o say_v brethren_z that_o it_o may_v not_o befall_v a_o true_a christian_a thus_o to_o fade_v for_o a_o season_n and_o yet_o the_o wither_a of_o the_o blade_n be_v a_o sore_a sign_n of_o a_o stony_a ground_n but_o this_o i_o dare_v
power_n of_o be_v heal_v and_o knit_v again_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o some_o plaster_n or_o medicine_n skilful_o apply_v but_o cut_v a_o stick_n of_o wood_n or_o break_v it_o in_o piece_n and_o no_o plaster_n will_v make_v up_o the_o wound_n or_o knit_v the_o break_a piece_n together_o again_o so_o be_v it_o with_o corrupt_a mankind_n and_o this_o be_v all_o that_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n word_n will_v give_v we_o leave_v to_o ascribe_v to_o man_n as_o a_o reason_n of_o his_o be_v true_o ingraff_v into_o christ_n he_o be_v capable_a of_o such_o a_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n but_o the_o principal_a and_o only_a active_a cause_n god_n 2._o from_o god_n be_v god_n power_n and_o goodness_n that_o cause_n beyond_o which_o it_o be_v a_o madness_n to_o inquire_v for_o any_o other_o cause_n the_o lord_n do_v please_v to_o bestow_v effectual_a grace_n upon_o those_o who_o he_o will_v receive_v to_o mercy_n whereby_o they_o have_v not_o alone_o their_o mind_n enlighten_v to_o some_o perceive_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n word_n but_o also_o their_o will_n by_o the_o mighty_a operation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n subdue_v to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o same_o so_o by_o the_o infuse_v of_o a_o new_a life_n into_o they_o they_o be_v enable_v to_o become_v such_o as_o he_o do_v wish_v they_o to_o be_v and_o as_o themselves_o desire_v to_o be_v account_v be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o grace_n all_o in_o the_o church_n will_v be_v hypocrite_n as_o well_o as_o any_o but_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o bestow_v that_o grace_n upon_o one_o who_o he_o have_v enable_v to_o desire_v it_o that_o he_o may_v gracious_o bestow_v it_o which_o to_o another_o he_o give_v not_o but_o leave_v he_o to_o his_o own_o carelessness_n of_o it_o that_o miss_v it_o by_o his_o own_o default_n his_o blood_n may_v be_v upon_o his_o own_o head_n so_o the_o perdition_n of_o hypocrite_n be_v of_o themselves_o because_o they_o willing_o refuse_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n which_o he_o do_v offer_v they_o the_o soundness_n and_o happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n be_v of_o his_o free_a grace_n that_o break_v the_o yoke_n of_o sin_n which_o hold_v they_o under_o and_o make_v they_o willing_a of_o unwilling_a and_o able_a of_o unable_a to_o turn_v themselves_o unto_o he_o for_o to_o imagine_v as_o some_o will_v needs_o do_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v deal_v no_o more_o bountiful_o with_o one_o than_o with_o another_o of_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n but_o that_o the_o cause_n why_o one_o become_v a_o hypocrite_n the_o other_o prevail_v to_o uprightness_n be_v mere_o and_o whole_o in_o themselves_o be_v a_o fancy_n i_o think_v so_o contrary_a to_o all_o both_o scripture_n and_o experience_n of_o god_n saint_n that_o hardly_o can_v any_o be_v deceive_v with_o it_o but_o he_o that_o never_o feel_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v upright_o and_o whence_o it_o come_v and_o thus_o have_v we_o lay_v before_o you_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n chap._n iii_o show_v the_o description_n and_o sort_n of_o hypocrite_n now_o it_o be_v very_o requisite_a that_o we_o make_v a_o plain_a and_o sound_a explication_n of_o it_o to_o the_o intent_n that_o every_o man_n may_v discern_v of_o himself_o and_o of_o his_o own_o estate_n whether_o himself_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n yea_o or_o no._n we_o will_v therefore_o do_v our_o best_a to_o lay_v the_o matter_n open_v clear_o that_o it_o may_v be_v evident_o discover_v to_o they_o that_o will_v take_v the_o pain_n of_o inquire_v about_o the_o point_n who_o be_v guileful_a who_o without_o guile_n and_o for_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v necessary_a to_o stand_v upon_o these_o four_o head_n first_o to_o show_v what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v second_o to_o show_v the_o diverse_a sort_n or_o rather_o degree_n of_o hypocrite_n three_o to_o set_v down_o some_o general_a note_n of_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o true-hearted_a and_o the_o hypocrite_n last_o to_o declare_v more_o particular_o the_o agreement_n &_o disagreement_n of_o they_o both_o in_o four_o principal_a and_o main_a grace_n whereof_o the_o one_o have_v alone_o the_o shadow_n the_o other_o the_o substance_n that_o be_v first_o in_o knowledge_n second_o in_o faith_n three_o in_o repentance_n fourthly_a in_o good_a life_n or_o in_o obedience_n first_o then_o for_o the_o describe_v of_o a_o hypocrite_n viz_o what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v viz_o we_o must_v make_v use_n of_o a_o necessary_a rule_n of_o logic_n which_o bid_v we_o to_o define_v the_o concrete_a by_o the_o abstract_n as_o they_o term_v it_o as_o no_o man_n can_v possible_o declare_v what_o a_o white_a thing_n be_v but_o by_o conceive_v and_o express_v what_o be_v whiteness_n nor_o what_o a_o proud_a man_n be_v but_o by_o understand_v what_o pride_n be_v nor_o what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v but_o by_o know_v what_o be_v hypocrisy_n and_o again_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o virtue_n and_o vice_n do_v not_o denominate_v their_o subject_n unless_o they_o be_v in_o they_o in_o so_o high_a a_o degree_n as_o to_o prevail_v and_o be_v predominant_a over_o their_o contrary_n as_o nothing_o be_v call_v white_a but_o that_o in_o which_o whiteness_n so_o prevail_v that_o it_o partake_v more_o of_o white_a than_o of_o any_o other_o colour_n and_o if_o a_o thing_n do_v so_o partake_v of_o whiteness_n we_o call_v it_o white_a though_o it_o fail_v much_o of_o the_o white_a whiteness_n that_o may_v be_v so_o be_v he_o call_v a_o proud_a man_n in_o who_o pride_n prevail_v a_o infidel_n who_o infidelity_n rule_v a_o revengeful_a man_n in_o who_o revenge_n do_v bear_v sway_n and_o a_o covetous_a man_n in_o who_o covetousness_n reign_v and_o so_o must_v we_o likewise_o conclude_v in_o the_o present_a matter_n that_o he_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n in_o who_o hypocrisy_n prevail_v and_o bear_v rule_v to_o the_o make_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n therefore_o three_o thing_n must_v concur_v rule_v a_o prosessor_n of_o christian_a religion_n in_o who_o hypocrisy_n rule_v first_o a_o fit_a subject_n viz._n such_o a_o one_o as_o do_v at_o least_o in_o appearance_n profess_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o christian_n and_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n as_o nothing_o can_v be_v call_v a_o unfruitful_a branch_n if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o branch_n so_o neither_o can_v any_o man_n be_v term_v a_o hypocrite_n unless_o at_o least_o external_o he_o be_v in_o serve_v but_o the_o world_n with_o its_o business_n or_o delight_n do_v so_o bewiteh_a and_o beguile_v you_o that_o you_o can_v find_v neither_o heart_n nor_o time_n neither_o will_v nor_o leisure_n to_o call_v again_o to_o mind_n the_o thing_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v and_o to_o ask_v yourselves_o do_v i_o this_o duty_n be_o i_o guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n do_v not_o this_o reproof_n pertain_v to_o i_o have_v i_o any_o part_n in_o this_o promise_n and_o according_o to_o strive_v with_o your_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v either_o humble_v or_o comfort_v and_o so_o to_o resolve_v on_o amendment_n and_o reformation_n according_a to_o the_o word_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o we_o have_v so_o too_o too_o many_o fruitless_a hearer_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o so_o much_o be_v teach_v so_o little_o practise_v how_o long_o will_v you_o continue_v to_o neglect_v this_o most_o save_a and_o most_o profitable_a exercise_n of_o bind_v the_o word_n on_o the_o table_n of_o your_o heart_n and_o of_o incorporate_n it_o into_o your_o soul_n and_o be_v god_n instrument_n to_o engrave_v it_o in_o your_o own_o mind_n by_o meditate_v on_o it_o and_o by_o busy_v your_o cogitation_n upon_o it_o afterward_o as_o a_o thing_n that_o much_o concern_v you_o how_o often_o have_v you_o be_v tell_v that_o much_o hear_n without_o meditation_n will_v breed_v nothing_o but_o a_o swim_a knowledge_n that_o it_o will_v not_o beget_v holiness_n that_o it_o will_v not_o renew_v the_o soul_n but_o that_o hear_v second_v with_o meditation_n will_v quicken_v and_o will_v sanctify_v i_o pray_v you_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o fault_n &_o amend_v it_o redeem_v time_n as_o to_o come_v and_o hearken_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o god_n speak_v to_o thou_o so_o likewise_o to_o get_v alone_o afterward_o and_o apply_v it_o to_o thyself_o in_o thy_o serious_a meditation_n certain_o if_o we_o do_v thus_o declare_v our_o high_a esteem_n of_o god_n word_n and_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o our_o soul_n do_v account_v of_o it_o as_o of_o a_o thing_n most_o precious_a and_o healthful_a to_o our_o soul_n the_o lord_n of_o heaven_n will_v not_o fail_v to_o give_v his_o blessing_n and_o to_o make_v it_o mighty_a to_o the_o work_n of_o a_o godly_a conversation_n in_o we_o &_o it_o shall_v bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o good_a live_n but_o last_o spirit_n last_o pray_v to_o god_n to_o make_v we_o frui_fw-la full_a by_o his_o spirit_n you_o must_v also_o join_v with_o your_o meditate_v which_o he_o that_o meditate_v can_v but_o do_v he_o that_o meditate_v not_o can_v hardly_o do_v in_o any_o earnestness_n constant_a prayer_n unto_o god_n for_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o write_v his_o law_n in_o your_o inward_a part_n to_o engrave_v it_o in_o the_o fleshly_a table_n of_o your_o heart_n and_o to_o move_v and_o incline_v your_o will_n to_o obedience_n that_o so_o you_o may_v become_v the_o epistle_n of_o god_n minister_v by_o man_n for_o fruitfulness_n be_v a_o supernatural_a effect_n it_o come_v not_o from_o any_o power_n inherent_a in_o man_n soul_n or_o arise_v from_o his_o own_o will_n but_o it_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n and_o grace_n which_o be_v send_v from_o christ_n the_o vine_n as_o it_o be_v sap_n into_o the_o several_a branch_n that_o do_v suck_v and_o draw_v it_o from_o he_o in_o his_o ordinance_n and_o by_o name_n by_o faithful_a and_o earnest_n and_o continual_a request_v it_o at_o his_o hand_n you_o must_v therefore_o make_v conscience_n to_o call_v upon_o god_n for_o the_o good_a work_n of_o his_o spirit_n to_o help_v you_o to_o live_v holy_o to_o make_v you_o assure_v of_o his_o love_n fervent_a in_o love_n to_o he_o zealous_a of_o his_o glory_n and_o constant_a in_o walk_v in_o his_o law_n and_o in_o particular_a you_o must_v daily_o beg_v of_o he_o to_o strengthen_v you_o for_o the_o performance_n of_o such_o and_o such_o duty_n and_o leave_v of_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n as_o from_o time_n to_o time_n the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o you_o hear_v do_v call_v upou_fw-mi you_o to_o leave_v or_o to_o perform_v god_n will_v be_v entreat_v for_o all_o good_a thing_n and_o he_o have_v bind_v himself_o not_o to_o deny_v the_o request_n of_o all_o that_o call_v on_o he_o 7.8_o matth._n 7.8_o every_o one_o that_o seek_v find_v o_o comfortable_a and_o large_a promise_n answer_v all_o objection_n and_o able_a with_o sap_n and_o how_o the_o life_n of_o they_o may_v be_v make_v godly_a and_o christian_n which_o be_v yet_o far_o from_o godliness_n and_o christianity_n see_v your_o barrenness_n and_o to_o attentive_a hear_n join_v diligent_a meditate_v on_o the_o word_n you_o hear_v and_o constant_a prayer_n unto_o god_n for_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o spirit_n to_o make_v his_o word_n effectual_a and_o to_o give_v you_o grace_n to_o obey_v it_o then_o shall_v you_o sure_o be_v make_v branch_n bring_v forth_o fruit_n for_o then_o do_v you_o abide_v in_o christ_n and_o his_o word_n abide_v in_o you_o and_o that_o our_o saviour_n himself_o do_v after_o ward_n prescribe_v as_o a_o infallible_a way_n to_o bring_v forth_o much_o fruit_n chap._n xix_o contain_v the_o four_o use_n but_o now_o it_o be_v time_n that_o we_o turn_v ourselves_o unto_o the_o fruitful_a branch_n therein_o the_o sruitfull_a must_v be_v comfort_v therein_o to_o divide_v unto_o they_o that_o comfort_n which_o god_n have_v allot_v unto_o they_o &_o which_o this_o text_n afford_v and_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o for_o all_o those_o therefore_o that_o do_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o christ_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o have_v be_v show_v we_o have_v much_o good_a to_o speak_v and_o joyful_a tiding_n to_o deliver_v we_o be_v to_o assure_v and_o secure_v they_o against_o all_o the_o fear_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n against_o all_o the_o cavil_n of_o satan_n and_o false_a censure_n of_o the_o wicked_a world_n that_o they_o be_v not_o hypocrite_n but_o true-hearted_a and_o
you_o may_v see_v that_o in_o these_o word_n we_o be_v lead_v to_o speak_v of_o four_o most_o necessary_a point_n the_o destruction_n of_o hypocrite_n the_o corruption_n of_o god_n true_a saint_n in_o that_o they_o need_v prune_v the_o help_n they_o have_v against_o these_o corruptio_n by_o prune_v and_o the_o good_a they_o get_v by_o this_o prune_n viz._n growth_n in_o godliness_n of_o which_o whilst_o i_o do_v speak_v with_o as_o much_o plainness_n and_o evidence_n as_o i_o can_v let_v i_o crave_v you_o also_o to_o attend_v with_o all_o diligence_n and_o reverence_n chap._n ii_o show_v the_o certain_a destruction_n of_o hypocrite_n and_o the_o degree_n and_o mean_n thereof_o doct._n 1_o destroy_v all_o hypocrite_n must_v be_v destroy_v come_v hither_o therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o in_o the_o first_o place_n and_o behold_v the_o end_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n he_o be_v to_o be_v cut_v off_o all_o false-hearted_a guileful_a and_o hollow_a professor_n of_o christian_a religion_n that_o be_v not_o in_o truth_n which_o they_o seem_v in_o appearance_n shall_v by_o degree_n be_v sure_o bring_v to_o nought_o be_v destroy_v the_o lord_n will_v no_o more_o suffer_v such_o person_n to_o remain_v in_o his_o church_n undiscovered_a and_o unconfound_v than_o a_o good_a husbandman_n will_v suffer_v dry_a and_o rot_a branch_n to_o remain_v upon_o the_o tree_n of_o his_o orchard_n uncut_v off_o so_o you_o have_v it_o in_o the_o other_o parable_n also_o 3.10_o matth._n 3.10_o the_o tree_n that_o bring_v not_o forth_o good_a fruit_n be_v hew_v down_o and_o cast_v into_o the_o fire_n say_v john_n the_o baptist_n to_o the_o man_n that_o come_v to_o his_o baptism_n the_o house_n that_o be_v build_v upon_o the_o sand_n when_o the_o wind_n rain_n and_o tempest_n do_v beat_v bring_v forth_o no_o better_a fruit_n than_o thorn_n and_o brier_n be_v near_o unto_o curse_v who_o end_n shall_v be_v burn_v say_v the_o author_n to_o the_o hebrew_n and_o from_o he_o that_o have_v not_o mean_v in_o truth_n that_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o which_o he_o seem_v to_o have_v as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v us._n saint_n john_n do_v give_v we_o example_n of_o this_o ruin_n of_o dissembler_n say_v of_o many_o in_o his_o time_n they_o go_v out_o from_o we_o because_o they_o be_v not_o of_o us._n thus_o have_v the_o lord_n be_v abundant_a in_o discover_v his_o intend_a vengeance_n against_o the_o counterfeit_a christian_n that_o you_o may_v the_o better_o conceive_v of_o god_n wisdom_n and_o justice_n herein_o we_o will_v show_v you_o in_o what_o degree_n and_o by_o what_o instrument_n the_o lord_n do_v cut_v off_o these_o dry_a branch_n the_o degree_n be_v likely_a these_o and_o thus_o they_o follow_v one_o upon_o another_o first_o whereas_o they_o have_v some_o work_n of_o common_a grace_n bestow_v upon_o they_o as_o the_o enlighten_v of_o their_o mind_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o conceive_v divine_a truth_n the_o frame_n of_o their_o will_n to_o a_o like_n of_o exercise_n of_o piety_n a_o gladness_n to_o hear_v and_o speak_v of_o the_o word_n a_o gladness_n of_o the_o company_n of_o good_a man_n and_o the_o like_a these_o work_n be_v by_o god_n just_a judgement_n because_o they_o refuse_v to_o make_v a_o good_a use_n of_o they_o in_o turn_v all_o to_o the_o through_o change_v of_o their_o heart_n and_o reform_v of_o their_o life_n even_o quite_o withdraw_v from_o they_o and_o so_o there_o follow_v a_o sensible_a wither_a they_o care_v not_o for_o the_o word_n they_o care_v not_o for_o the_o company_n of_o the_o saint_n that_o once_o content_v they_o and_o religion_n seem_v nothing_o so_o goodly_a a_o thing_n unto_o they_o as_o sometime_o it_o do_v second_o whereas_o they_o have_v once_o the_o spirit_n of_o restraint_n bestow_v upon_o they_o to_o hold_v down_o their_o corruption_n and_o to_o keep_v the_o badness_n of_o their_o heart_n from_o show_v itself_o in_o extremity_n the_o lord_n do_v now_o please_v to_o remove_v these_o bar_n so_o to_o avenge_v himself_o upon_o their_o ingratitude_n and_o stubbornness_n that_o do_v wink_v with_o their_o eye_n and_o resist_v the_o offer_n of_o love_n make_v to_o they_o and_o refuse_v to_o open_v the_o door_n when_o he_o stand_v there_o and_o knock_v and_o to_o give_v they_o over_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o own_o evil_a nature_n that_o they_o may_v break_v forth_o open_o and_o discover_v themselves_o how_o rot_a they_o be_v at_o heart_n by_o run_v into_o some_o such_o vile_a practice_n as_o carry_v they_o quite_o away_o so_o that_o they_o never_o return_v again_o by_o repentance_n nor_o never_o show_v themselves_o to_o be_v sound_o humble_v for_o the_o same_o then_o do_v he_o send_v the_o temptation_n of_o satan_n together_o with_o the_o affrightment_n or_o allurement_n of_o the_o world_n whereby_o they_o be_v so_o clean_o pule_v away_o from_o the_o show_n of_o godliness_n that_o at_o last_o they_o grow_v profess_o cold_a and_o careless_a in_o open_a that_o sell_v themselves_o over_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o good_a of_o they_o that_o work_v righteousness_n but_o chief_o the_o word_n of_o god_n itself_o a_o two-edged_a sword_n because_o they_o will_v not_o yield_v unto_o it_o that_o it_o may_v cut_v off_o their_o corruption_n from_o their_o soul_n become_v a_o savour_n of_o death_n a_o weapon_n of_o vengeance_n to_o cut_v off_o their_o soul_n from_o god_n for_o by_o their_o often_o resist_v it_o and_o much_o set_n of_o their_o wit_n and_o conscience_n upon_o the_o tenter_n to_o shift_v and_o dally_v with_o it_o they_o become_v blind_a and_o blind_a and_o hard_a and_o hard_o till_o at_o length_n they_o be_v sell_v over_o unto_o utter_a blindness_n and_o give_v clean_o into_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o satan_n from_o which_o they_o seem_v once_o to_o be_v redeem_v and_o thus_o be_v judas_n cut_v off_o as_o the_o scripture_n show_v us._n he_o be_v first_o a_o thief_n allow_v himself_o in_o his_o covetousness_n and_o purloin_v and_o not_o hee_v the_o check_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o every_o man_n must_v needs_o know_v will_v be_v apt_a to_o be_v move_v within_o he_o be_v a_o person_n of_o so_o great_a knowledge_n as_o he_o be_v and_o after_o he_o prove_v a_o very_a devil_n when_o he_o dip_v his_o hand_n into_o the_o warm_a and_o innocent_a blood_n of_o his_o heavenly_a master_n and_o well-known_a saviour_n the_o lord_n to_o punish_v his_o guile_n in_o not_o oppose_v his_o covetousness_n and_o falsehood_n put_v he_o clean_o up_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o own_o both_o rage_n and_o lucre_n till_o satan_n have_v possess_v he_o with_o a_o full_a purpose_n of_o turn_v on_o the_o pharise_n side_n where_o he_o see_v more_o likelihood_n of_o rise_v and_o of_o make_v himself_o a_o fair_a way_n into_o their_o favour_n by_o sell_v his_o master_n unto_o they_o for_o a_o little_a money_n and_o those_o reproof_n and_o warning_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n which_o shall_v have_v withdraw_v he_o from_o this_o revolt_n and_o treason_n do_v nothing_o else_o through_o his_o desperate_a wilfulness_n but_o enrage_v embitter_v and_o invenome_v he_o provoke_v he_o more_o and_o more_o against_o
deserve_a punishment_n which_o his_o grievous_a wickedness_n do_v challenge_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o righteousness_n if_o it_o be_v object_v that_o god_n may_v convert_v the_o hypocrite_n if_o he_o will_v the_o answer_n be_v by_o his_o omnipotent_a power_n he_o may_v and_o so_o he_o may_v the_o devil_n too_o and_o the_o very_a prince_n of_o the_o devil_n beelzebub_n himself_o but_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v set_v down_o a_o certain_a way_n and_o order_n of_o convert_n man_n unto_o he_o agreeable_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o own_o unsearchable_a wisdom_n even_o such_o a_o way_n as_o be_v in_o itself_o most_o plain_a sure_a and_o infallible_a if_o the_o negligence_n and_o obstinacy_n of_o man_n do_v not_o hinder_v and_o such_o a_o way_n as_o be_v most_o convenient_a to_o procure_v the_o great_a honour_n that_o may_v be_v unto_o he_o in_o their_o salvation_n and_o that_o be_v that_o man_n himself_o shall_v become_v a_o work_a instrument_n with_o god_n to_o his_o own_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n which_o see_v the_o hypocrite_n will_v not_o do_v the_o lord_n will_v never_o be_v so_o over-gracious_a unto_o he_o as_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o heaven_n by_o another_o way_n but_o will_v even_o magnify_v himself_o in_o destroy_v he_o because_o he_o neglect_v to_o take_v the_o right_a course_n that_o be_v show_v he_o to_o do_v himself_o good_a so_o you_o see_v reason_n enough_o on_o god_n part_n why_o such_o branch_n shall_v be_v separate_v from_o the_o vine_n consider_v we_o of_o themselves_o and_o see_v if_o there_o be_v not_o more_o than_o cause_n of_o handle_v they_o with_o such_o severity_n first_o they_o thrust_v away_o salvation_n from_o themselves_o reason_n 2_o as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o jew_n in_o another_o case_n they_o from_o themselves_o who_o 1._o they_o thrust_v away_o salvation_n from_o they_o because_o they_o will_v not_o entertain_v and_o yield_v unto_o the_o good_a motion_n of_o god_n word_n and_o spirit_n that_o do_v urge_v and_o press_v they_o to_o turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o what_o can_v be_v expect_v in_o reason_n but_o that_o they_o shall_v procure_v unto_o themselves_o even_o sharp_a and_o swift_a damnation_n for_o be_v it_o not_o most_o equal_a that_o he_o which_o will_v not_o receive_v salvation_n when_o it_o be_v proffer_v unto_o he_o by_o god_n not_o give_v eternal_a life_n but_o unto_o those_o that_o be_v careful_a thorough_o to_o reform_v their_o heart_n and_o life_n they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o be_v at_o all_o that_o pain_n sure_o the_o matter_n stand_v thus_o betwixt_o the_o lord_n and_o their_o soul_n it_o can_v not_o stand_v with_o his_o righteousness_n to_o preserve_v they_o from_o ruin_n the_o dissemble_a christian_n deal_v by_o god_n as_o the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n do_v deal_v by_o he_o in_o the_o six_o of_o john_n when_o he_o tell_v they_o of_o eat_v his_o flesh_n and_o drink_v his_o blood_n they_o say_v this_o be_v a_o hard_a say_n who_o can_v hear_v it_o and_o so_o go_v back_o and_o walk_v no_o more_o with_o he_o so_o the_o hypocrite_n hear_v of_o remission_n of_o sin_n of_o life_n of_o salvation_n think_v they_o be_v thing_n very_o desirable_a and_o out_o of_o a_o will_v to_o have_v a_o part_n in_o they_o he_o will_v go_v a_o great_a way_n with_o god_n but_o when_o he_o hear_v of_o a_o general_a renounce_n of_o all_o sin_n and_o of_o wash_v and_o cleanse_v his_o heart_n and_o that_o without_o this_o care_n there_o be_v no_o salvation_n he_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v so_o narrow_a he_o shrink_v back_o at_o these_o exhortation_n and_o think_v the_o lord_n be_v a_o hard_a master_n and_o will_v go_v with_o he_o no_o further_o so_o then_o see_v the_o fruitless_a
