to_o he_o and_o then_o as_o for_o the_o other_o sort_n of_o petition_n our_o ask_n for_o any_o virtue_n or_o grace_n without_o put_v forth_o any_o endeavour_n after_o it_o it_o be_v as_o certain_a to_o meet_v with_o no_o good_a answer_n as_o the_o other_o for_o to_o pray_v thus_o be_v plain_o to_o play_v the_o hypocrite_n with_o god_n almighty_a and_o flat_o to_o dissemble_v with_o he_o it_o be_v to_o beg_v what_o we_o do_v not_o care_n for_o to_o ask_v what_o we_o refuse_v to_o pretend_v desire_n for_o all_o pray_v be_v desire_v for_o that_o which_o we_o account_v be_v worth_n no_o endeavour_n and_o what_o a_o miserable_a piece_n of_o falsehood_n be_v this_o now_o when_o a_o man_n make_v his_o action_n most_o palpable_o to_o give_v the_o lie_n to_o his_o word_n he_o tell_v god_n that_o he_o earnest_o desire_v his_o help_n to_o work_v in_o he_o a_o pure_a heart_n but_o yet_o he_o will_v do_v nothing_o for_o it_o nor_o avoid_v the_o least_o occasion_n of_o uncleanness_n he_o beg_v his_o grace_n to_o assist_v he_o to_o a_o meek_a and_o patient_a spirit_n but_o when_o he_o be_v off_o his_o knee_n his_o work_n be_v do_v for_o he_o never_o after_o use_v any_o mean_n to_o procure_v it_o or_o take_v any_o care_n to_o nourish_v and_o preserve_v those_o degree_n of_o it_o which_o he_o have_v already_o sure_o any_o man_n of_o common_a understanding_n must_v needs_o see_v that_o such_o desire_n as_o these_o be_v never_o in_o his_o heart_n but_o only_o from_o the_o tooth_n forward_o in_o reality_n he_o care_v not_o what_o become_v of_o the_o grace_n which_o he_o have_v pray_v for_o and_o be_v no_o far_o concern_v about_o they_o than_o that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a bare_o to_o say_v that_o he_o have_v ask_v they_o or_o at_o best_a if_o he_o do_v desire_v they_o at_o all_o yet_o be_v his_o desire_n far_o from_o that_o degree_n which_o he_o pretend_v it_o be_v a_o weak_a wish_n rather_o than_o a_o desire_n a_o imperfect_a inclination_n that_o can_v effect_v nothing_o it_o may_v be_v he_o have_v rather_o have_v that_o grace_n which_o he_o ask_v than_o go_v without_o it_o but_o he_o have_v rather_o want_v it_o than_o be_v at_o any_o pain_n for_o it_o he_o love_v and_o desire_v the_o least_o ease_n far_o more_o than_o the_o virtue_n and_o be_v resolve_v to_o keep_v that_o although_o he_o lose_v this_o so_o that_o although_o he_o do_v think_v the_o grace_n which_o he_o pray_v for_o to_o be_v worth_a something_o yet_o he_o esteem_v it_o next_o to_o nothing_o he_o judge_v it_o to_o be_v worth_n no_o pain_n and_o deserve_v no_o endeavour_n and_o so_o have_v either_o no_o desire_n of_o it_o at_o all_o or_o such_o weak_a and_o feeble_a one_o as_o be_v just_a as_o good_a as_o none_o yea_o it_o be_v well_o if_o many_o time_n his_o heart_n be_v not_o set_v against_o those_o very_a grace_n that_o he_o beg_v whilst_o he_o be_v ask_v of_o they_o which_o be_v more_o than_o bare_o be_v unconcern_v for_o they_o for_o how_o often_o do_v it_o happen_v that_o a_o man_n pray_v for_o charity_n whilst_o he_o be_v in_o love_n with_o malice_n that_o he_o beg_v sobriety_n whilst_o his_o heart_n be_v upon_o drunkenness_n that_o he_o ask_v justice_n whilst_o his_o affection_n hanker_v after_o deceitfulness_n and_o wrong_v this_o in_o very_a deed_n be_v the_o case_n of_o most_o if_o not_o of_o all_o impenitent_a and_o wicked_a man_n for_o they_o love_v their_o sin_n and_o resolve_v to_o continue_v in_o they_o and_o yet_o even_o then_o pray_v for_o such_o grace_n as_o be_v contrary_a to_o they_o now_o here_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o their_o heart_n do_v not_o go_v along_o with_o their_o tongue_n they_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o lose_v that_o which_o they_o pray_v to_o god_n they_o may_v leave_v and_o be_v afraid_a to_o receive_v that_o which_o they_o beg_v to_o have_v they_o only_o pretend_v desire_n but_o be_v possess_v in_o truth_n with_o hatred_n and_o aversation_n and_o then_o as_o for_o all_o the_o good_a promise_n which_o they_o make_v to_o god_n in_o their_o prayer_n viz._n that_o if_o he_o will_v forgive_v they_o they_o will_v never_o do_v so_o any_o more_o but_o become_v new_a man_n and_o watch_v more_o careful_o and_o sin_n more_o seldom_o and_o obey_v more_o constant_o and_o universal_o so_o long_o as_o their_o prayer_n be_v thus_o unendeavour_v and_o idle_a all_o this_o be_v but_o mere_a wind_n vain_a hypocrisy_n and_o deceitful_a talk_n for_o if_o when_o their_o prayer_n be_v over_o they_o take_v no_o care_n still_o to_o perform_v that_o obedience_n which_o they_o promise_v whilst_o they_o be_v at_o they_o be_v it_o not_o clear_a to_o every_o eye_n that_o all_o be_v cheat_v and_o falsehood_n and_o that_o they_o lie_v and_o dissemble_v in_o these_o their_o promise_n as_o well_o as_o we_o see_v they_o do_v in_o their_o profession_n all_o their_o engagement_n be_v stark_o nought_o they_o mean_v no_o such_o thing_n whilst_o they_o make_v they_o nor_o ever_o after_o think_v upon_o they_o to_o make_v they_o good_a and_o fulfil_v they_o and_o can_v any_o man_n now_o be_v so_o intolerable_o weak_a and_o shameful_o blind_a as_o to_o imagine_v that_o god_n shall_v reward_v such_o idle_a talk_n as_o all_o these_o unendeavour_a prayer_n for_o grace_n be_v and_o give_v a_o blessing_n upon_o such_o hypocritical_a din_n and_o feign_a language_n to_o dissemble_v thus_o with_o god_n almighty_n be_v not_o to_o honour_v but_o to_o abuse_v he_o and_o so_o fit_v we_o not_o for_o any_o expression_n of_o his_o love_n but_o only_o of_o his_o wrath_n and_o indignation_n it_o be_v to_o pass_v affront_n instead_o of_o beg_a kindness_n to_o make_v a_o mockery_n of_o his_o condescension_n and_o to_o turn_v that_o sacred_a and_o inestimable_a liberty_n which_o he_o have_v gracious_o indulge_v mankind_n of_o make_v know_v their_o desire_n to_o he_o for_o a_o supply_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o they_o into_o a_o fraudulent_a trick_n and_o opprobrious_a cozenage_n and_o since_o all_o these_o unendeavour_a prayer_n for_o god_n grace_n be_v a_o hypocrisy_n so_o gross_a and_o a_o mockery_n so_o reproachful_a we_o must_v needs_o conclude_v that_o he_o will_v utter_o reject_v they_o as_o well_o as_o our_o prayer_n for_o pardon_n whilst_o we_o continue_v in_o our_o sin_n and_o instead_o of_o grant_v and_o fulfil_v deride_v and_o avenge_v they_o but_o if_o ever_o we_o hope_v to_o have_v our_o prayer_n hear_v the_o true_a and_o only_a way_n be_v to_o observe_v saint_n to_o john_n rule_n of_o ask_v only_o what_o be_v according_a to_o god_n will_n for_o this_o say_v he_o be_v the_o confidence_n which_o we_o have_v in_o he_o that_o if_o we_o ask_v any_o thing_n according_a to_o his_o will_n he_o hear_v we_o 1_o joh._n 5.14_o and_o what_o that_o will_n of_o be_v without_o trouble_n but_o it_o will_v undergo_v nothing_o for_o obedience_n but_o this_o be_v a_o conceit_n as_o strange_a as_o it_o be_v destructive_a and_o such_o wherewith_o the_o simple_a of_o man_n suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v impose_v upon_o in_o no_o other_o matter_n but_o only_o this_o which_o most_o of_o all_o require_v their_o care_n and_o caution_n viz._n the_o eternal_a thing_n but_o the_o thing_n desire_v be_v another_o our_o desire_n be_v within_o but_o the_o object_n desire_v be_v without_o we_o our_o desire_n be_v our_o own_o but_o the_o thing_n desire_v be_v want_v for_o so_o far_o be_v our_o desire_n of_o any_o thing_n from_o be_v the_o very_a thing_n itself_o which_o be_v desire_v that_o it_o be_v not_o always_o join_v with_o it_o but_o we_o possess_v they_o a_o man_n do_v not_o present_o possess_v meat_n because_o he_o be_v hungry_a or_o be_v owner_n of_o a_o great_a estate_n because_o he_o be_v covetous_a no_o he_o must_v labour_v and_o seek_v as_o well_o as_o desire_v both_o for_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o or_o else_o let_v he_o desire_v what_o he_o will_v he_o shall_v get_v neither_o it_o be_v true_a a_o desire_n of_o money_n be_v a_o great_a preparative_n to_o get_v money_n and_o a_o desire_n of_o knowledge_n a_o good_a disposition_n to_o attain_v knowledge_n because_o our_o appetite_n and_o desire_n be_v of_o all_o the_o passion_n the_o great_a and_o most_o immediate_a spring_n of_o our_o outward_a work_n and_o operation_n for_o delight_n beget_v love_n and_o love_v end_n in_o desire_n and_o desire_n carry_v we_o on_o a_o good_a step_n and_o degree_n towards_o they_o it_o be_v so_o metonymical_o it_o be_v the_o principle_n and_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o for_o therefore_o we_o acquire_v grace_n and_o perform_v obedience_n because_o we_o desire_v they_o we_o shall_v take_v no_o pain_n about_o they_o be_v it_o not_o for_o our_o desire_n of_o they_o but_o because_o we_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o they_o therefore_o we_o labour_v after_o they_o but_o till_o our_o desire_n come_v on_o to_o this_o effect_n they_o have_v no_o title_n to_o the_o reward_n of_o it_o because_o although_o they_o be_v a_o gift_n of_o god_n grace_n it_o be_v true_a as_o well_o as_o obedience_n itself_o be_v yet_o be_v they_o not_o that_o grace_n which_o in_o the_o judgement_n shall_v entitle_v we_o to_o pardon_v and_o happiness_n for_o the_o promise_n to_o the_o desire_n of_o obedience_n be_v one_o but_o the_o promise_n to_o obedience_n itself_o be_v another_o if_o we_o sincere_o desire_v to_o do_v god_n will_v and_o from_o the_o restraint_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o when_o he_o have_v bear_v down_o both_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o his_o lust_n and_o trample_v they_o under_o foot_n for_o the_o consummation_n of_o his_o sin_n then_o do_v he_o begin_v to_o feel_v the_o want_n and_o to_o be_v all_o in_o fear_n of_o lose_v the_o habitual_a rectitude_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n which_o by_o so_o many_o contrary_a action_n employ_v in_o that_o one_o great_a one_o he_o have_v almost_o quite_o destroy_v and_o of_o suffer_v the_o desertion_n of_o god_n spirit_n which_o by_o his_o continue_a provocation_n contain_v in_o it_o likewise_o he_o have_v well_o nigh_o abandon_v for_o to_o this_o purpose_n we_o find_v he_o complain_v and_o cry_v out_o in_o his_o psalm_n of_o repentance_n for_o that_o great_a transgression_n whereof_o at_o the_o 14_o the_o verse_n he_o make_v express_v mention_n create_v or_o new_o make_v in_o i_o a_o clean_a heart_n o_o god_n say_v he_o involuntary_a and_o unchosen_a and_o these_o be_v consistent_a with_o a_o state_n of_o salvation_n and_o such_o as_o christ_n gospel_n do_v not_o eternal_o threaten_v but_o gracious_o bear_v and_o in_o great_a mercy_n dispense_v with_o as_o for_o the_o involuntariness_n of_o man_n action_n that_o which_o produce_v and_o effect_n it_o be_v not_o any_o force_n from_o without_o upon_o our_o will_n itself_o all_o the_o thing_n in_o the_o material_a world_n can_v never_o bind_v and_o compel_v the_o will_n of_o man_n see_v it_o be_v no_o physical_a bodily_a thing_n so_o as_o that_o any_o bodily_a force_n may_v act_v upon_o it_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n can_v make_v we_o will_n and_o like_v that_o which_o we_o do_v not_o like_a the_o will_n of_o man_n be_v liable_a to_o no_o scholast_n compulsion_n it_o have_v this_o privilege_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n on_o the_o earth_n that_o nothing_o about_o it_o can_v force_v or_o constrain_v it_o but_o that_o still_o it_o will_v and_o choose_v as_o itself_o please_v as_o for_o the_o action_n of_o man_n indeed_o they_o be_v mix_v thing_n because_o they_o flow_v from_o the_o whole_a man_n both_o body_n and_o soul_n and_o begin_v in_o the_o mind_n or_o will_v within_o be_v consummate_v in_o our_o outward_a and_o bodily_a operation_n and_o as_o for_o the_o last_o of_o these_o viz._n our_o bodily_a operation_n it_o may_v be_v force_v forasmuch_o as_o one_o body_n be_v liable_a to_o the_o force_n and_o compulsion_n of_o another_o thus_o for_o instance_n a_o chaste_a matron_n body_n may_v be_v violent_o ravish_v a_o peaceable_a man_n hand_n may_v by_o the_o overpower_a strength_n of_o another_o man_n be_v make_v the_o force_a instrument_n of_o another_o murder_n the_o bodily_a work_n and_o operation_n can_v be_v force_v see_v other_o body_n more_o powerful_a than_o itself_o can_v compel_v it_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o school_n understand_v the_o word_n action_n viz._n only_o for_o the_o action_n of_o the_o body_n when_o they_o make_v one_o kind_n of_o involuntary_a action_n to_o be_v involuntary_a by_o vim_o violence_n or_o compulsion_n that_o be_v a_o thing_n whereto_o not_o the_o will_n itself_o but_o the_o body_n only_o can_v be_v liable_a but_o now_o these_o force_a action_n of_o the_o body_n although_o in_o nature_n they_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o action_n yet_o in_o morality_n they_o be_v esteem_v as_o none_o at_o all_o that_o be_v law_n which_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o good_a and_o evil_n and_o the_o measure_n of_o man_n manner_n take_v no_o notice_n of_o they_o nor_o look_v upon_o themselves_o to_o be_v either_o break_a or_o keep_v by_o they_o because_o it_o be_v not_o the_o body_n and_o carcase_n
for_o christ_n need_v never_o have_v come_v into_o the_o world_n for_o that_o end_n since_o the_o law_n have_v render_v we_o accurse_v and_o miserable_a enough_o already_o but_o he_o come_v on_o a_o quite_o contrary_a errand_n to_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o life_n and_o pardon_n and_o not_o to_o seal_v we_o up_o to_o eternal_a death_n upon_o the_o first_o wilful_a transgression_n but_o to_o procure_v for_o we_o remission_n of_o all_o our_o deadly_a and_o damn_v sin_n and_o to_o restore_v we_o out_o of_o a_o state_n of_o enmity_n and_o death_n to_o a_o state_n of_o mercy_n and_o reconciliation_n he_o come_v to_o find_v out_o a_o remedy_n for_o all_o our_o evil_n and_o to_o prescribe_v we_o a_o way_n of_o recover_v ourselves_o when_o we_o have_v fall_v by_o any_o sin_n so_o that_o although_o none_o of_o we_o all_o have_v live_v free_a from_o it_o yet_o in_o the_o event_n sin_n shall_v not_o be_v our_o ruin_n and_o that_o remedy_n which_o god_n have_v provide_v we_o for_o this_o purpose_n be_v repentance_n he_o do_v not_o abandon_v we_o upon_o the_o commission_n of_o every_o sin_n but_o he_o be_v hearty_o desirous_a that_o we_o shall_v repent_v of_o it_o and_o when_o we_o do_v so_o he_o have_v oblige_v himself_o by_o his_o truth_n and_o faithfulness_n to_o forgive_v it_o he_o be_v hearty_o desirous_a i_o say_v that_o whensoever_o we_o commit_v any_o sin_n we_o the_o end_n of_o his_o forbearance_n and_o long-suffering_a to_o lead_v we_o to_o repentance_n rom._n 2.4_o and_o what_o saint_n to_o paul_n say_v that_o we_o all_o experience_n for_o during_o all_o that_o time_n wherein_o he_o bear_v with_o we_o how_o restless_a and_o unwearied_a earnest_a and_o affectionate_a be_v his_o endeavour_n for_o this_o purpose_n he_o admonish_v we_o of_o our_o fault_n affectionate_a force_n and_o violence_n for_o he_o correct_v we_o with_o his_o rod_n and_o visit_v we_o in_o chastisement_n and_o never_o cease_v to_o try_v all_o mean_n of_o reduce_v we_o to_o a_o sense_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o repentance_n till_o we_o be_v become_v plain_o incorrigible_a and_o utter_o rebellious_a and_o so_o fit_a for_o nothing_o but_o to_o be_v swallow_v up_o of_o ruin_n and_o yet_o even_o then_o his_o desire_n of_o reclaim_v we_o be_v so_o strong_a and_o his_o love_n so_o affectionate_a that_o he_o scarce_o know_v how_o to_o give_v we_o over_o how_o shall_v i_o
