penalty_n and_o punishment_n his_o condition_n be_v such_o as_o expose_v he_o to_o the_o suffering_n of_o they_o in_o all_o sort_n but_o utter_o disenable_v he_o if_o he_o have_v have_v a_o mind_n as_o he_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o have_v any_o such_o from_o impose_v they_o upon_o other_o in_o the_o least_o degree_n so_o than_o we_o see_v the_o weapon_n of_o his_o warfare_n that_o be_v which_o he_o use_v for_o the_o overcome_a or_o subdue_a of_o other_o for_o convert_v or_o convince_a or_o confirm_v they_o in_o the_o faith_n be_v no_o sort_n of_o these_o carnal_a weapon_n and_o consequent_o these_o be_v not_o the_o weapon_n belong_v to_o such_o as_o will_v fight_v after_o his_o example_n and_o manage_v the_o same_o warfare_n with_o he_o but_o they_o be_v weapon_n of_o quite_o another_o nature_n and_o that_o be_v as_o he_o here_o affirm_v mighty_a through_o god_n etc._n etc._n where_o in_o make_v this_o the_o opposite_a term_n to_o these_o carnal_a weapon_n say_v they_o be_v not_o carnal_a but_o mighty_a he_o tacit_o imply_v that_o all_o these_o carnal_a weapon_n be_v not_o mighty_a but_o infirm_a and_o weak_a &_o this_o indeed_o may_v seem_v a_o paradox_n as_o many_o other_o thing_n do_v that_o be_v affirm_v in_o the_o word_n namely_o that_o those_o thing_n whereby_o we_o see_v such_o great_a matter_n daily_o effect_v in_o the_o world_n as_o the_o overturning_a of_o kingdom_n dispeople_a of_o country_n change_v of_o the_o law_n and_o government_n of_o commonwealth_n and_o alter_v religion_n and_o the_o outward_a profession_n of_o they_o shall_v yet_o be_v call_v and_o so_o sure_o of_o right_n be_v to_o be_v account_v but_o weak_a thing_n for_o the_o conceive_n therefore_o of_o this_o aright_o we_o must_v take_v notice_n what_o the_o propagate_a the_o faith_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o root_v out_o all_o paganish_a superstition_n and_o idolatry_n out_o of_o the_o world_n the_o world_n be_v then_o full_a of_o these_o carnal_a bond_n imprisonment_n and_o disgrace_n and_o many_o cruel_a and_o ignominious_a death_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n withstand_v they_o and_o labour_v to_o uphold_v the_o credit_n of_o their_o old_a superstition_n by_o many_o eloquent_a and_o elaborate_a discourse_n frame_v by_o their_o orator_n and_o philosopher_n who_o abound_v in_o wit_n and_o learning_n of_o all_o sort_n yet_o notwithstanding_o all_o these_o thing_n those_o christian_a champion_n by_o the_o alone_a use_n of_o these_o other_o weapon_n that_o christ_n have_v commend_v to_o they_o go_v on_o daily_a conquer_a and_o prevail_a that_o faith_n they_o thus_o fight_v for_o come_v in_o a_o little_a time_n to_o be_v extend_v to_o and_o profess_v in_o most_o part_n of_o the_o world_n and_o those_o corrupt_a and_o idolatrous_a practice_n in_o religion_n that_o for_o many_o age_n the_o world_n general_o have_v be_v accustom_v to_o and_o so_o can_v not_o be_v but_o in_o love_n with_o which_o they_o fight_v against_o come_v in_o a_o short_a time_n to_o vanish_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o so_o remain_v extinct_a at_o this_o day_n as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o have_v have_v any_o foot_n in_o it_o this_o show_v as_o the_o strength_n of_o these_o christian_a weapon_n both_o for_o propagate_a the_o faith_n and_o overthrow_v that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o it_o so_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o other_o in_o both_o these_o respect_n that_o they_o be_v neither_o able_a to_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o that_o faith_n they_o so_o much_o oppose_v nor_o preserve_v the_o credit_n and_o continuance_n of_o those_o ancient_a superstition_n they_o be_v so_o much_o employ_v for_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o there_o be_v since_o other_o superstition_n grow_v up_o as_o namely_o that_o of_o undergo_v such_o thing_n as_o can_v be_v do_v with_o mere_a humane_a strength_n namely_o to_o persist_v in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o obedience_n to_o god_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o indeed_o this_o way_n of_o plant_v and_o maintain_v religion_n be_v and_o have_v be_v much_o use_v in_o the_o world_n and_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v be_v very_o prevalent_a and_o powerful_a in_o respect_n of_o those_o great_a and_o numerous_a multitude_n that_o be_v professor_n of_o such_o religion_n as_o among_o the_o mahometans_n and_o papist_n especial_o in_o spain_n and_o italy_n where_o a_o man_n be_v not_o suffer_v to_o profess_v any_o other_o manner_n of_o worship_v christ_n than_o what_o the_o pope_n profess_v and_o allow_v without_o the_o hazard_n of_o his_o liberty_n or_o life_n but_o as_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o such_o plant_n or_o preserve_v of_o religion_n have_v nothing_o to_o support_v it_o from_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o example_n of_o the_o apostle_n so_o be_v it_o no_o less_o certain_a that_o such_o way_n of_o plant_v what_o ever_o show_v it_o make_v be_v altogether_o ineffectual_a for_o such_o end_n its_o true_a it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v there_o be_v many_o great_a and_o numerous_a multitude_n in_o those_o place_n which_o by_o mean_n of_o those_o carnal_a weapon_n chief_o be_v keep_v in_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o outward_a form_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n which_o be_v there_o profess_a and_o maintain_v but_o their_o do_v thus_o be_v not_o proper_o to_o be_v call_v nor_o account_v religion_n that_o be_v as_o i_o have_v already_o say_v a_o voluntary_a thing_n and_o so_o far_o only_o to_o be_v account_v religion_n as_o it_o be_v so_o whosoever_o profess_v any_o religion_n true_a or_o false_a out_o of_o fear_n so_o as_o thereby_o to_o avoid_v those_o loss_n and_o hazard_n which_o be_v threaten_v to_o the_o non-professor_n that_o person_n by_o such_o a_o profession_n be_v to_o be_v account_v to_o act_v rather_o a_o matter_n of_o policy_n then_o of_o religion_n to_o take_v care_n rather_o for_o provide_v for_o his_o outward_a tranquillity_n and_o profit_n in_o this_o world_n then_o for_o his_o inward_a peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o salvation_n in_o the_o next_o indeed_o the_o doctrine_n or_o religion_n of_o the_o papist_n as_o it_o be_v for_o so_o much_o of_o it_o wherein_o it_o differ_v from_o we_o and_o which_o make_v it_o popery_n to_o be_v account_v no_o other_o but_o the_o doctrine_n and_o tradition_n or_o invention_n of_o man_n such_o as_o have_v no_o foundation_n at_o all_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o the_o mean_n which_o be_v take_v by_o they_o for_o preserve_v the_o credit_n and_o profession_n thereof_o with_o man_n as_o penalty_n and_o imprisonment_n etc._n etc._n be_v to_o be_v esteem_v no_o other_o but_o dictate_v of_o carnal_a wisdom_n or_o worldly_a policy_n the_o end_n whereof_o be_v not_o to_o provide_v for_o man_n spiritual_a interest_n or_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n but_o only_o for_o their_o worldly_a quietness_n and_o advantage_n and_o some_o other_o thing_n especial_o belong_v to_o their_o body_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o true_a religion_n which_o be_v a_o voluntary_a thing_n shall_v be_v plant_v in_o man_n mind_n by_o any_o worldly_a force_n or_o fear_n nor_o consequent_o that_o the_o good_a of_o man_n soul_n which_o whole_o depend_v thereon_o shall_v be_v any_o thing_n advance_v by_o any_o such_o mean_n as_o be_v make_v use_n of_o in_o that_o way_n so_o as_o either_o to_o begin_v or_o preserve_v in_o man_n such_o a_o profession_n of_o it_o this_o then_o show_v partly_o the_o folly_n and_o partly_o the_o cruelty_n of_o all_o such_o politician_n for_o so_o they_o account_v themselves_o and_o there_o be_v many_o such_o in_o the_o world_n other_o as_o well_o as_o papist_n that_o make_v use_v of_o these_o weapon_n of_o worldly_a terror_n or_o penalty_n in_o case_n of_o religion_n so_o as_o thereby_o to_o engage_v man_n in_o such_o or_o such_o a_o profession_n or_o in_o hold_v such_o opinion_n as_o they_o themselves_o approve_v of_o for_o the_o religion_n or_o opinion_n that_o be_v by_o this_o mean_v attempt_v to_o be_v persuade_v on_o other_o must_v be_v necessary_o either_o true_a or_o false_a 1._o if_o the_o religion_n or_o opinion_n be_v indeed_o true_a which_o be_v thus_o attempt_v to_o be_v fasten_v upon_o other_o the_o party_n on_o who_o this_o attempt_n be_v make_v must_v be_v suppose_v hereupon_o either_o to_o embrace_v it_o or_o still_o notwithstanding_o these_o penalty_n that_o be_v use_v to_o stand_v out_o and_o oppose_v it_o if_o the_o former_a be_v suppose_v then_o consider_v those_o mean_n can_v have_v no_o force_n at_o all_o to_o convince_v his_o judgement_n or_o a_o do_v of_o a_o thing_n against_o his_o conscience_n and_o so_o a_o act_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o consequent_o that_o which_o
as_o do_v stand_v out_o contradict_v and_o blaspheme_v yea_o christ_n himself_o that_o be_v the_o most_o pure_a and_o perfect_a copy_n in_o this_o kind_n can_v not_o for_o all_o this_o prevail_v upon_o all_o those_o that_o be_v hearer_n of_o his_o doctrine_n and_o eye-witness_n of_o his_o miracle_n and_o of_o the_o continue_a zeal_n and_o goodness_n that_o shine_v forth_o in_o his_o life_n many_o have_v the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n so_o settle_v in_o their_o heart_n carnal_a and_o sensual_a affection_n so_o deep_o root_v in_o they_o that_o these_o weapon_n can_v make_v no_o impression_n upon_o they_o all_o the_o exhortation_n or_o example_n of_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n how_o eminent_a soever_o can_v have_v no_o power_n to_o prevail_v with_o they_o yea_o though_o one_o shall_v come_v from_o the_o dead_a they_o will_v not_o be_v convert_v by_o he_o but_o yet_o we_o be_v not_o to_o conceive_v all_o who_o be_v yet_o stranger_n or_o for_o the_o present_a enemy_n to_o godliness_n to_o be_v of_o this_o temper_n there_o be_v a_o difference_n to_o be_v conceive_v in_o unregenerate_a person_n as_o it_o be_v plain_a there_o be_v among_o the_o heathen_a and_o still_o be_v among_o the_o like_a sort_n of_o man_n some_o of_o a_o more_o flexible_a other_o of_o a_o more_o inflexible_a disposition_n to_o goodness_n some_o far_o off_o and_o other_o near_o to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n that_o be_v to_o the_o admission_n and_o entertainment_n of_o those_o mean_n which_o can_v only_o render_v a_o man_n actual_o capable_a of_o that_o place_n though_o who_o they_o be_v that_o be_v so_o be_v only_o perfect_o know_v to_o god_n beside_o there_o be_v ordinary_o in_o all_o even_o in_o the_o worst_a sort_n of_o man_n so_o much_o of_o that_o divine_a light_n which_o god_n have_v make_v natural_a to_o the_o soul_n remain_v as_o serve_v to_o make_v they_o own_o and_o even_o tacit_o to_o admire_v virtue_n in_o other_o when_o it_o clear_o and_o full_o appear_v though_o they_o be_v not_o willing_a because_o of_o the_o difficulty_n and_o unpleasingnesse_n in_o it_o to_o their_o sensual_a desire_n to_o be_v practiser_n thereof_o themselves_o and_o for_o this_o reason_n also_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o labour_v to_o obscure_v the_o appearance_n thereof_o in_o other_o so_o as_o they_o may_v not_o be_v think_v to_o be_v what_o indeed_o they_o be_v now_o by_o this_o it_o may_v appear_v that_o these_o spiritual_a weapon_n notwithstanding_o the_o great_a wickedness_n and_o opposition_n of_o man_n against_o they_o be_v still_o very_o useful_a so_o as_o they_o can_v never_o want_v whole_o of_o their_o effect_n beside_o that_o which_o they_o immediate_o and_o direct_o serve_v for_o namely_o the_o fence_n or_o secure_v the_o person_n that_o have_v and_o use_v they_o from_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v there_o be_v a_o further_a good_a may_v be_v expect_v from_o they_o that_o be_v a_o subdue_a of_o ungodliness_n in_o some_o or_o other_o a_o vanquish_a of_o they_o in_o time_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o that_o piety_n which_o yet_o they_o be_v enemy_n to_o yea_o and_o even_o in_o the_o most_o wicked_a and_o such_o as_o hate_v to_o be_v god_n in_o themselves_o to_o practice_v vigorous_o and_o incessant_o those_o virtue_n that_o they_o hear_v daily_o commend_v to_o they_o out_o of_o the_o word_n and_o which_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v in_o some_o measure_n already_o wrought_v in_o they_o not_o to_o remit_v not_o to_o abate_v of_o their_o care_n in_o these_o thing_n but_o daily_o to_o abound_v and_o grow_v strong_a and_o more_o resolute_a in_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o you_o have_v hear_v that_o the_o subdue_a that_o be_v the_o salvation_n of_o other_o depend_v much_o hereupon_o these_o thing_n be_v true_o in_o make_v that_o award_n to_o render_v to_o such_o a_o person_n according_a to_o his_o work_n what_o ground_n can_v there_o be_v to_o think_v either_o that_o such_o mourning_n which_o man_n may_v well_o in_o this_o case_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v in_o a_o great_a part_n in_o a_o manner_n force_v to_o by_o the_o immediate_a approach_n and_o fear_n of_o death_n shall_v be_v so_o high_o considerable_a with_o god_n above_o all_o the_o voluntary_a and_o long_o continue_a course_n in_o sin_n of_o the_o same_o person_n or_o that_o be_v so_o and_o god_n therefore_o that_o be_v for_o in_o the_o sea_n only_o to_o take_v their_o pastime_n therein_o and_o such_o be_v those_o way_n of_o vain_a and_o curious_a speculation_n and_o dispute_v and_o exercise_n of_o wit_n about_o curious_a perplex_v and_o unprofitable_a question_n such_o as_o no_o way_n serve_v but_o be_v rather_o hindrance_n unto_o godliness_n in_o which_o many_o learned_a person_n whole_o in_o a_o manner_n employ_v themselves_o without_o bend_v their_o study_n as_o they_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o advance_v the_o power_n of_o religion_n in_o themselves_o and_o other_o and_o last_o such_o be_v those_o course_n of_o worldliness_n of_o heap_v and_o hoard_v up_o treasure_n for_o themselves_o and_o their_o heir_n without_o any_o proportionable_a lay_v they_o out_o in_o private_a or_o public_a good_a work_n for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o benefit_n of_o other_o which_o be_v the_o disease_n of_o many_o rich_a one_o in_o the_o world_n now_o the_o hold_v or_o reason_n wherewith_o such_o person_n fortify_v themselves_o herein_o be_v somewhat_o of_o a_o like_a nature_n with_o those_o before_o allege_v as_o 1._o a_o kind_n of_o antiquity_n and_o prescription_n of_o time_n for_o the_o practise_n of_o they_o they_o be_v thing_n that_o have_v be_v always_o use_v this_o have_v still_o be_v the_o fashion_n of_o the_o gentry_n and_o gallantry_n of_o the_o time_n think_v they_o that_o be_v or_o desire_v to_o be_v account_v for_o such_o and_o scholar_n have_v always_o thus_o exercise_v their_o wit_n and_o express_v their_o learning_n and_o thereby_o attain_v honour_n above_o the_o vulgar_a thereunto_o in_o the_o like_a manner_n as_o the_o unconvert_v heathen_a do_v heretofore_o the_o outward_a profession_n of_o christian_a religion_n that_o be_v first_o as_o some_o new_a device_n invent_v by_o some_o melancholy_a or_o pragmatical_a and_o overbusy_a or_o precise_a person_n such_o as_o trouble_v themselves_o with_o more_o than_o become_v they_o and_o affect_v to_o be_v note_v for_o singularity_n have_v not_o the_o modesty_n to_o be_v content_a with_o and_o conform_v themselves_o to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o common_a and_o ordinary_a practice_n of_o the_o most_o in_o think_v or_o do_v nothing_o but_o what_o it_o require_v or_o allow_v to_o spend_v a_o great_a part_n of_o their_o time_n in_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n and_o christian_a discourse_n out_o of_o the_o word_n for_o edify_v themselves_o in_o godliness_n to_o lay_v out_o their_o mean_n which_o shall_v make_v they_o and_o their_o heir_n live_v in_o honour_n and_o esteem_v in_o the_o world_n upon_o stranger_n or_o such_o as_o they_o have_v no_o particular_a obligation_n to_o these_o be_v thing_n wherein_o as_o a_o great_a part_n of_o religion_n consist_v so_o they_o be_v ordinary_o look_v upon_o by_o such_o person_n as_o very_o harsh_a and_o unpleasant_a course_n and_o such_o as_o be_v very_o unsuitable_a with_o those_o end_n of_o enjoy_v worldly_a repute_n and_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n which_o they_o have_v propose_v to_o themselves_o and_o therefore_o be_v so_o far_o the_o more_o opposite_a to_o they_o four_o there_o be_v some_o of_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n and_o which_o these_o person_n sufficient_o know_v to_o be_v such_o yet_o if_o we_o may_v judge_v as_o i_o know_v not_o but_o we_o may_v by_o their_o avow_a &_o deliberate_a practice_n in_o this_o kind_n be_v look_v upon_o by_o they_o as_o thing_n below_o they_o that_o be_v as_o disgraceful_a and_o unworthy_a for_o they_o to_o observe_v namely_o those_o publish_v touch_v the_o abstain_v from_o all_o revenge_n and_o contest_v with_o other_o instead_o where_o of_o be_v commend_v to_o we_o pray_v and_o blessing_n 9.44_o matth._n 9.44_o and_o do_v good_a to_o those_o that_o hate_n or_o hurt_v we_o and_o turn_v the_o other_o cheek_n to_o he_o that_o have_v smite_v we_o rather_o then_o by_o our_o opposition_n to_o add_v fuel_n to_o his_o enmity_n and_o thereby_o increase_v the_o contention_n who_o be_v there_o almost_o especial_o of_o these_o that_o be_v or_o will_v be_v account_v the_o gallant_n of_o the_o time_n that_o do_v not_o take_v a_o quite_o contrary_a course_n that_o be_v not_o apt_a to_o steem_z these_o thing_n rather_o as_o act_n of_o baseness_n and_o pusillanimity_n then_o of_o any_o hoâ—our_n though_o in_o so_o do_v they_o charge_v â—he_v most_o gallant_a and_o honourable_a person_n â—hat_n ever_o be_v on_o earth_n with_o be_v guilty_a of_o such_o baseness_n both_o in_o his_o doctrine_n and_o example_n namely_o our_o bless_a saviour_n these_o be_v those_o strong_a hold_v law_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o all_o these_o may_v be_v add_v that_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o main_a strength_n and_o supporter_n of_o all_o these_o reason_n in_o they_o and_o of_o that_o carelessness_n or_o remissness_n in_o observe_v the_o law_n of_o christ_n which_o flow_v from_o thence_o that_o be_v a_o secret_a inward_a persuasion_n derive_v to_o they_o from_o some_o common_a but_o unsound_a doctrine_n namely_o touch_v the_o unnecessarinesse_n of_o such_o precise_a and_o universal_a exact_a walk_v and_o conform_v ourselves_o to_o the_o word_n that_o man_n may_v be_v save_v and_o come_v to_o heaven_n ordinary_o without_o it_o that_o to_o rely_v on_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n to_o apprehend_v and_o apply_v his_o righteousness_n to_o ourselves_o which_o be_v that_o formality_n of_o justify_v faith_n which_o some_o teach_v and_o which_o sure_o for_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v exhibit_v in_o the_o last_o sickness_n and_o that_o by_o those_o that_o for_o all_o the_o time_n before_o have_v constant_o neglect_v the_o do_v of_o the_o forementioned_a duty_n that_o this_o be_v sufficient_a for_o secure_v a_o man_n of_o salvation_n this_o be_v that_o common_a great_a engine_n or_o fortress_n whereby_o such_o person_n and_o all_o other_o in_o a_o manner_n that_o be_v possess_v of_o it_o become_v impregnable_a in_o their_o hold_n their_o subdue_a being_n in_o a_o sort_n impossible_a and_o so_o they_o themselves_o in_o this_o respect_n in_o a_o more_o desperate_a condition_n than_o those_o of_o the_o ancient_a gentile_n the_o apostle_n have_v to_o deal_v with_o so_o long_o as_o it_o remain_v undemolisht_a in_o they_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o place_n for_o pull_v down_o all_o the_o strong_a hold_v before_o mention_v the_o
