opposition_n of_o the_o other_o for_o so_o we_o shall_v be_v always_o to_o seek_v but_o wise_o compare_v the_o former_a work_n in_o our_o beginning_n of_o grace_n with_o the_o present_a operation_n thereof_o in_o do_v his_o will_n in_o a_o word_n if_o together_o with_o these_o we_o can_v compare_v the_o purpose_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o practice_n thereof_o and_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o same_o lay_v together_o both_o how_o far_o we_o be_v come_v thereto_o &_o what_o by_o faith_n we_o apprehend_v these_o if_o we_o can_v right_o discern_v and_o compare_v together_o we_o shall_v gain_v great_a light_n to_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n for_o hereby_o we_o shall_v discern_v it_o to_o be_v the_o mere_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o that_o it_o can_v be_v scan_v by_o no_o other_o but_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o though_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o pray_v or_o how_o we_o grow_v and_o increase_v in_o this_o or_o that_o grace_n yet_o see_v the_o spirit_n help_v our_o infirmity_n even_o above_o what_o we_o ask_v or_o think_v 3.21_o rom_n 8.26_o eph._n 3.21_o therefore_o we_o then_o most_o certain_o grow_v when_o we_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n above_o any_o ability_n in_o ourselves_o and_o yet_o may_v be_v to_o seek_v of_o the_o spirit_n when_o we_o have_v do_v our_o best_a for_o comfort_n and_o present_a issue_n and_o hereby_o also_o may_v we_o wise_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n that_o whereas_o we_o must_v compare_v and_o fit_v spiritual_a thing_n to_o spiritual_a thing_n as_o both_o hereby_o to_o discern_v for_o our_o self_n and_o express_v they_o for_o the_o information_n of_o other_o therefore_o hereby_o may_v we_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n first_o that_o it_o be_v begin_v and_o lead_v forward_o as_o by_o the_o spirit_n which_o only_o be_v able_a to_o effect_v the_o same_o and_o be_v special_o destinate_a and_o appropriate_v to_o this_o work_n as_o both_o illightning_n our_o understanding_n to_o conceive_v what_o natural_o we_o be_v ignorant_a of_o and_o also_o incline_v our_o affection_n to_o the_o embrace_v thereof_o to_o which_o they_o be_v natural_o averse_a so_o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v by_o it_o own_o mean_n even_o by_o the_o spiritual_a word_n as_o be_v ordain_v and_o only_o effectual_a hereunto_o therefore_o if_o as_o our_o beginning_n of_o grace_n have_v be_v from_o the_o word_n so_o we_o be_v lead_v forward_o by_o the_o power_n thereof_o in_o our_o proceed_n therein_o be_v able_a to_o deny_v all_o our_o action_n from_o this_o ground_n to_o square_v they_o all_o to_o this_o rule_n and_o to_o aim_v they_o all_o to_o the_o main_a end_n thereof_o hereby_o shall_v we_o wise_o discover_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n especial_o if_o we_o can_v discern_v the_o mystery_n of_o this_o word_n special_o labour_v the_o inward_a purge_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o for_o the_o effect_n thereof_o tolerate_v some_o outward_a fail_n though_o seem_o contrary_a to_o the_o strict_a rule_n thereof_o yet_o be_v subordinate_a to_o the_o main_a end_n to_o procure_v and_o try_v inward_a soundness_n do_v therefore_o fall_v in_o very_o fit_o therewith_o and_o further_v the_o same_o and_o in_o all_o these_o work_n so_o secret_o that_o neither_o can_v we_o at_o all_o time_n discern_v the_o same_o for_o the_o present_a neither_o at_o all_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o fathom_v the_o depth_n thereof_o no_o more_o than_o our_o own_o heart_n because_o both_o be_v still_o a_o mystery_n by_o these_o consideration_n may_v we_o comfortable_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n as_o that_o first_o we_o discern_v as_o a_o special_a work_n of_o the_o word_n in_o convince_a our_o heart_n of_o sin_n and_o subdue_a and_o incline_v the_o same_o to_o hunger_n after_o christ_n
and_o rest_n in_o he_o though_o yet_o we_o find_v little_a conformity_n to_o he_o in_o our_o life_n because_o the_o seed_n must_v first_o be_v sow_v inward_o in_o the_o heart_n &_o there_o even_o râ—t_a and_o die_v as_o it_o be_v to_o our_o appearance_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o strange_a work_n thereof_o therein_o confound_v and_o cast_v the_o same_o out_o of_o itself_o so_o we_o find_v also_o our_o proceed_n in_o this_o spiritual_a life_n rather_o by_o the_o inward_a motion_n of_o the_o heart_n desirous_a to_o do_v what_o it_o can_v then_o express_v any_o thorough_a ability_n answerable_a to_o it_o desire_v to_o the_o practice_n thereof_o yea_o though_o it_o many_o time_n do_v the_o contrary_a yet_o see_v the_o spirit_n and_o word_n work_v by_o contrary_n even_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n yet_o we_o find_v this_o contrary_a work_n in_o leave_v we_o to_o some_o particular_a evil_n to_o sort_n with_o and_o further_o the_o main_a end_n even_o to_o cause_v more_o inward_a abase_v of_o the_o heart_n and_o quicken_a thereof_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o gracious_a rule_n to_o discern_v this_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n yea_o though_o we_o be_v many_o time_n to_o seek_v of_o the_o inward_a bent_n of_o our_o heart_n yet_o as_o hereby_o we_o be_v more_o humble_v in_o ourselves_o and_o so_o send_v to_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o son_n of_o god_n so_o may_v we_o hereby_o also_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n that_o sometime_o it_o be_v insensible_a to_o our_o spirit_n howsoever_o discernible_a by_o the_o spirit_n which_o search_v all_o thing_n yea_o sometime_o must_v be_v discern_v by_o contrary_n that_o still_o we_o may_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n and_o see_v the_o word_n though_o it_o work_v diverse_o yet_o most_o wise_o to_o further_a the_o main_a end_n and_o to_o avouch_v the_o freedom_n of_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o also_o by_o this_o diversity_n of_o work_v may_v we_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o so_o still_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o our_o discern_v thereof_o and_o proceed_v therein_o for_o our_o better_a satisfaction_n in_o this_o point_n both_o to_o discern_v more_o clear_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o also_o to_o apprehend_v it_o more_o comfortable_o by_o this_o rule_n of_o compare_v spiritual_a thing_n with_o spiritual_a have_v we_o also_o in_o readiness_n these_o special_a caveat_n and_o direction_n 1._o caveat_n first_o that_o we_o measure_v not_o simple_o our_o estate_n in_o christ_n by_o any_o present_a measure_n of_o grace_n we_o have_v receive_v that_o be_v though_o the_o least_o grace_n in_o we_o in_o truth_n be_v a_o evidence_n of_o our_o engraft_v into_o christ_n yet_o see_v our_o measure_n here_o at_o the_o best_a be_v imperfect_a yea_o sometime_o such_o as_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o discern_v or_o right_o judge_v of_o and_o so_o our_o interest_n in_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v perfect_a so_o it_o be_v also_o a_o deep_a mystery_n such_o as_o our_o shallow_a knowledge_n can_v fathom_v therefore_o our_o imperfect_a and_o short_a mete-wand_n can_v no_o way_n fit_o fathom_v so_o great_a a_o depth_n only_o herein_o be_v our_o comfort_n that_o as_o our_o acceptance_n in_o christ_n make_v we_o gracious_a by_o some_o measure_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n with_o he_o so_o our_o conformity_n hereby_o to_o his_o image_n shall_v own_v we_o unto_o he_o howsoever_o it_o may_v be_v short_a of_o the_o perfect_a pattern_n a_o 2._o caveat_n herein_o be_v that_o see_v there_o be_v diverse_a kind_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n some_o original_n and_o simple_o necessary_a to_o life_n as_o faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n other_o consequent_a and_o further_a the_o comfort_n and_o beauty_n thereof_o as_o full_a assurance_n joy_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o we_o must_v not_o measure_v our_o grow_n in_o grace_n by_o these_o late_a which_o be_v not_o always_o visible_a nor_o simple_o necessary_a but_o by_o the_o former_a but_o of_o this_o more_o full_o god_n will_v in_o the_o case_n a_o three_o rule_n of_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n be_v according_a to_o those_o several_a calling_n wherein_o god_n have_v place_v we_o that_o so_o we_o may_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o due_a season_n that_o be_v whereas_o every_o christian_a have_v two_o calling_n first_o his_o general_n call_v to_o the_o faith_n as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n of_o christ_n and_o second_o his_o particular_a call_n for_o the_o public_a and_o private_a good_a as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n thereof_o both_o these_o as_o they_o be_v limit_v in_o themselves_o so_o also_o be_v they_o limit_v and_o subordinate_a to_o each_o other_o i_o say_v first_o they_o be_v limit_v in_o themselves_o as_o that_o the_o general_n call_v of_o each_o christian_a be_v first_o limit_v to_o the_o place_n and_o ranke_n he_o enjoy_v in_o the_o church_n wherein_o he_o be_v either_o a_o public_a parson_n to_o teach_v other_o and_o so_o also_o be_v limit_v to_o those_o degree_n of_o priority_n and_o order_n which_o god_n have_v there_o place_v ephes_n 4.6_o 7_o 8._o rom._n 12._o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o prophet_n may_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o prophet_n that_o confusion_n may_v be_v avoid_v and_o unity_n preserve_v as_o some_o to_o rule_v and_o some_o to_o teach_v some_o for_o doctrine_n and_o some_o for_o discipline_n some_o for_o exhortation_n and_o some_o for_o relief_n etc._n etc._n or_o else_o he_o be_v a_o private_a person_n fit_a only_a to_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o public_a and_o not_o to_o teach_v and_o yet_o not_o debar_v from_o teach_v his_o family_n in_o private_a the_o fear_n of_o god_n 11._o 1._o cor._n 11._o genes_n 18._o and_o both_o these_o limit_v by_o the_o several_a gift_n bestow_v on_o they_o the_o lord_n require_v no_o more_o than_o he_o give_v and_o limit_v as_o also_o in_o some_o sort_n measure_v by_o the_o opportunity_n and_o success_n therein_o and_o so_o also_o the_o civil_a call_n have_v it_o bound_n in_o itself_o both_o according_a to_o the_o different_a degree_n and_o rank_n of_o man_n the_o wise_a lord_n have_v dispose_v in_o the_o world_n as_o some_o to_o rule_v and_o some_o to_o obey_v as_o also_o answerable_a to_o the_o diverse_a gift_n and_o use_n of_o man_n in_o the_o commonwealth_n according_a to_o which_o they_o be_v restrain_v from_o intermeddle_v with_o other_o calling_n and_o so_o also_o according_a to_o their_o ability_n in_o such_o calling_n that_o none_o may_v presume_v above_o what_o be_v meet_v yea_o also_o according_a to_o the_o several_a occasion_n of_o the_o weal_n public_a which_o in_o case_n of_o necessity_n may_v dispense_v with_o particular_a calling_n and_o restrain_v man_n from_o their_o private_a deal_n to_o prevent_v a_o public_a storm_n as_o the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n in_o some_o violent_a accident_n may_v fail_v the_o outward_a and_o inferior_a part_n and_o so_o cause_v some_o limit_v and_o subordinate_a to_o each_o other_o as_o first_o the_o christian_a call_v subordinate_n the_o civil_a and_o that_o both_o in_o the_o matter_n and_o manner_n and_o end_v thereof_o as_o both_o sanctify_a the_o matter_n unto_o we_o that_o we_o may_v lawful_o employ_v the_o same_o because_o to_o the_o impure_a all_o thing_n be_v impure_a and_o so_o also_o direct_v and_o bound_v in_o the_o manner_n thereof_o even_o so_o to_o use_v these_o thing_n as_o from_o a_o heavenly_a right_n so_o with_o spiritual_a affection_n and_o honest_a mean_n and_o so_o also_o restrain_v we_o herein_o to_o spiritual_a end_n even_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n 1._o cor._n 10.31_o and_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o church_n the_o common_a and_o peculiar_a salvation_n 1._o tim._n 6.19_o second_o the_o general_n call_v subordinate_n in_o some_o special_a case_n the_o civil_a thereunto_o as_o first_o in_o case_n of_o general_n humiliation_n though_o the_o civil_a be_v lawful_a on_o the_o six_o day_n yet_o upon_o such_o extraordinary_a occasion_n it_o must_v give_v way_n and_o surcease_v to_o signify_v the_o truth_n of_o our_o unworthiness_n as_o not_o fit_a to_o live_v and_o so_o to_o prepare_v by_o fire_n or_o sickness_n here_o the_o general_n call_v must_v give_v way_n to_o the_o civil_a because_o god_n will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v three_o and_o so_o also_o in_o case_n of_o charity_n or_o for_o the_o relief_n of_o a_o brother_n in_o sickness_n or_o such_o like_a
mercy_n therefore_o necessary_o must_v our_o weakness_n be_v daily_o subdue_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n which_o otherwise_o will_v prevail_v to_o overthrow_v the_o work_n or_o else_o wise_o turn_v to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o the_o work_n that_o the_o glory_n of_o both_o may_v only_o redound_v to_o the_o lord_n both_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o power_n in_o subdue_a or_o more_o weaken_a corruption_n daily_o which_o of_o itself_o necessary_o increase_v and_o of_o ourselves_o we_o be_v no_o way_n able_a to_o subdue_v as_o also_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o wisdom_n in_o weaken_v and_o subdue_a corruption_n by_o such_o mean_n and_o in_o such_o manner_n as_o in_o all_o likelihood_n of_o flesh_n serve_v more_o to_o enrage_v and_o increase_v the_o same_o as_o by_o affliction_n desertion_n and_o such_o like_a yea_o wonderful_o turn_v about_o the_o sense_n and_o power_n of_o corruption_n not_o only_o to_o the_o weaken_v thereof_o but_o also_o to_o further_o we_o gracious_o to_o a_o great_a increase_n of_o grace_n from_o whence_o do_v arise_v these_o comfortable_a conclusion_n to_o discern_v the_o measure_n of_o grace_n and_o further_o we_o therein_o first_o that_o see_v the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v see_v in_o weakness_n therefore_o as_o we_o may_v not_o look_v for_o any_o further_a measure_n of_o grace_n in_o this_o life_n than_o what_o be_v accompany_v with_o much_o weakness_n so_o we_o may_v hereby_o discern_v that_o to_o be_v a_o competent_a and_o thrive_a measure_n of_o grace_n which_o sâ—rues_v most_o to_o discover_v corruption_n tend_v most_o to_o the_o abâ—sing_n and_o subdue_a thereof_o so_o that_o the_o more_o we_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n the_o more_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n the_o more_o we_o discern_v the_o deceitfulness_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o perverseness_n of_o our_o thought_n the_o more_o light_a and_o grace_n we_o have_v receive_v yea_o the_o more_o we_o be_v abase_v and_o empty_v of_o all_o confidence_n in_o our_o own_o ability_n the_o more_o we_o be_v interest_v in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n the_o more_o we_o discern_v our_o fayling_n in_o the_o best_a and_o renounce_v our_o own_o righteousness_n the_o more_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o thereby_o shall_v be_v more_o enable_v to_o perfection_n second_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v perfect_v in_o infirmity_n therefore_o if_o in_o all_o our_o action_n we_o aim_v at_o god_n glory_n subbordinate_v our_o chief_a good_a thereunto_o and_o still_o deny_v ourselves_o and_o best_a righteousness_n that_o he_o only_o may_v be_v glorify_v in_o the_o beginning_n and_o lead_v forward_o of_o the_o work_n this_o be_v a_o gracious_a evidence_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o growth_n hereby_o we_o may_v reap_v find_v comfort_n in_o the_o great_a sense_n of_o our_o infirmity_n but_o of_o this_o more_o heretofore_o in_o that_o rule_n that_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n a_o seven_o rule_n hereto_o be_v that_o see_v affliction_n be_v a_o gracious_a mean_n and_o trial_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n therefore_o hereby_o we_o have_v some_o light_n to_o discern_v the_o measure_n thereof_o especial_o in_o those_o affliction_n which_o strip_v we_o of_o rejoice_v in_o the_o flesh_n which_o usual_o be_v no_o mean_a encouragement_n we_o rather_o find_v contrary_o corruption_n increase_v hardness_n of_o heart_n discern_v etc._n etc._n though_o we_o desire_v to_o repent_v and_o labour_n to_o abase_v our_o heart_n before_o our_o god_n yet_o we_o can_v do_v it_o with_o tear_n we_o can_v forsake_v such_o evil_n as_o we_o be_v grieve_v for_o and_o hate_v unfeigned_o all_o these_o notwithstanding_o i_o say_v we_o may_v not_o therefore_o conclude_v that_o the_o spirit_n have_v not_o assist_v we_o or_o approve_v not_o of_o our_o labour_n because_o still_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o free_a worker_n both_o free_a to_o afford_v we_o what_o measure_n of_o grace_n it_o please_v in_o do_v these_o thing_n which_o though_o it_o be_v far_o from_o perfection_n yet_o it_o be_v such_o as_o for_o the_o present_a be_v fit_a both_o that_o god_n may_v still_o have_v the_o glory_n and_o we_o may_v be_v cast_v upon_o his_o power_n for_o the_o enable_v of_o we_o in_o our_o weakness_n and_o also_o cast_v mere_o upon_o his_o freegrace_n for_o the_o acceptance_n and_o crown_v thereof_o and_o therefore_o if_o now_o we_o ask_v and_o be_v not_o answer_v in_o our_o particular_a desire_n for_o the_o present_a yet_o if_o we_o be_v supply_v with_o what_o may_v be_v better_o for_o we_o namely_o with_o patience_n to_o wait_v on_o our_o god_n with_o faith_n to_o rest_v on_o god_n though_o we_o feel_v no_o present_a answer_n for_o our_o comfort_n with_o more_o zeal_n to_o continue_v in_o prayer_n with_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o earnestness_n therein_o be_v not_o this_o the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o grant_v we_o what_o best_o please_v the_o same_o as_o to_o gain_v glory_n unto_o god_n in_o let_v we_o hereby_o see_v our_o fail_n and_o enable_v we_o to_o bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n so_o thereby_o to_o lead_v we_o a_o long_a by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n far_o beyond_o our_o ability_n to_o perfection_n if_o now_o the_o lord_n deal_v more_o abundant_o with_o we_o than_o we_o can_v our_o reckon_n unto_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n by_o discover_v daily_a corruption_n yet_o more_o and_o more_o and_o prevent_v those_o spiritual_a evil_n of_o pride_n vainglory_n security_n etc._n etc._n which_o may_v be_v occasion_v by_o what_o we_o desire_v which_o may_v rob_v god_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o ourselves_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o present_a welldoing_a and_o so_o of_o power_n to_o increase_v as_o these_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o discover_v corruption_n to_o prevent_v these_o evil_n so_o be_v they_o fit_a for_o we_o in_o this_o state_n of_o our_o imperfection_n to_o increase_v humility_n may_v we_o not_o reap_v comfort_n in_o this_o that_o we_o can_v still_o renounce_v our_o self_n and_o be_v abase_v in_o our_o own_o eye_n and_o do_v not_o the_o lord_n now_o in_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n not_o only_o answer_v our_o general_a end_n which_o be_v to_o go_v forward_o to_o perfection_n but_o therein_o also_o supply_v we_o even_o with_o that_o particular_a which_o we_o do_v desire_v though_o not_o for_o the_o present_a yet_o in_o due_a season_n though_o not_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n which_o we_o expect_v it_o yet_o by_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o may_v still_o justify_v the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o thereby_o confirm_v unto_o we_o the_o faithfulness_n of_o our_o god_n who_o will_v perfect_v the_o work_n which_o he_o have_v begin_v in_o we_o that_o he_o may_v have_v the_o glory_n of_o all_o his_o mercy_n and_o so_o though_o we_o can_v mourn_v for_o our_o sin_n with_o such_o plenty_n of_o tear_n yet_o if_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n this_o be_v discern_v of_o we_o and_o we_o be_v more_o humble_v for_o the_o same_o though_o not_o express_v outward_o yet_o inward_o with_o groan_v and_o satisfaction_n thereof_o as_o be_v subject_a to_o vainglory_n hypocrisy_n etc._n etc._n yet_o it_o further_v our_o main_a desire_n to_o approve_v the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n unto_o god_n to_o be_v vile_a still_o in_o our_o own_o eye_n that_o god_n only_o may_v have_v the_o glory_n to_o interest_n thereby_o in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v lead_v along_o to_o perfection_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o can_v forsake_v what_o particular_a sin_n we_o be_v grieve_v for_o and_o hearty_o detest_v yet_o do_v not_o this_o challenge_n the_o work_n of_o the_o yet_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n hereby_o more_o free_a and_o glorious_a both_o increase_a hereby_o our_o desire_n and_o hatred_n thereof_o and_o also_o accept_v the_o same_o as_o desire_n to_o put_v off_o this_o body_n of_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v be_v whole_o rid_v of_o they_o rom._n 7.24_o that_o so_o god_n may_v be_v all_o in_o all_o and_o withal_o recompense_v gracious_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n in_o we_o with_o such_o necessary_a grace_n of_o sincerity_n humility_n patience_n and_o the_o like_a that_o so_o hereby_o we_o may_v be_v better_o enable_v to_o hasten_v thereto_o thus_o do_v the_o spirit_n lead_v forward_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n to_o justify_v the_o freedom_n and_o so_o the_o wisdom_n and_o faithfulness_n thereof_o and_o this_o shall_v further_o appear_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o second_o property_n of_o the_o wind_n that_o though_o we_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o yet_o we_o know_v not_o whence_o it_o come_v nor_o whither_o it_o go_v which_o as_o it_o evidence_v still_o the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o it_o also_o discover_v gracious_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n thereby_o as_o first_o in_o that_o we_o may_v hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o though_o we_o can_v discern_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o same_o so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o spirit_n we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o it_o work_v both_o by_o it_o enable_v of_o we_o in_o well-doing_n and_o also_o by_o the_o effect_n thereof_o quiet_v our_o heart_n therein_o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n and_o scale_v up_o the_o approbation_n thereof_o by_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o assurance_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o spirit_n from_o the_o same_o yet_o lest_o we_o shall_v imagine_v the_o spirit_n tie_v only_o to_o this_o effect_n or_o that_o we_o deserve_v the_o same_o out_o of_o the_o worth_n of_o our_o well-doing_n and_o so_o encroach_v upon_o the_o worthiness_n of_o our_o head_n therefore_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v not_o see_v full_o for_o that_o remain_v for_o another_o life_n some_o notice_n we_o shall_v have_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o work_v though_o we_o can_v full_o discern_v the_o mystery_n thereof_o and_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o some_o such_o feel_n thereof_o we_o shall_v have_v as_o may_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o vain_a though_o we_o may_v want_v of_o such_o evidence_n which_o may_v evince_v the_o perfection_n of_o grace_n as_o be_v most_o fit_a for_o this_o state_n of_o grow_v our_o faith_n shall_v be_v mingle_v with_o some_o doubt_v our_o grace_n with_o some_o mixture_n of_o corruption_n that_o as_o we_o may_v discern_v the_o truth_n thereof_o so_o we_o may_v also_o discern_v the_o imperfection_n of_o the_o same_o that_o so_o we_o may_v daily_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n by_o daily_o deny_v of_o ourselves_o and_o labour_v to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n not_o have_v our_o own_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o we_o have_v not_o the_o perfect_a sight_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n neither_o enjoy_v sensible_a comfort_n in_o the_o same_o at_o all_o time_n alike_o yet_o be_v this_o so_o far_o from_o challenge_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o we_o as_o that_o rather_o it_o do_v evidence_n undoubted_o the_o power_n thereof_o see_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o combat_n between_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n there_o must_v necessary_o fall_v out_o such_o difference_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o also_o of_o our_o apprehension_n thereof_o whereas_o if_o it_o be_v always_o in_o one_o key_n and_o temper_n it_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o combat_n and_o so_o no_o true_a conversion_n only_o here_o let_v it_o suffice_v we_o that_o our_o god_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o will_v work_v as_o it_o please_v he_o that_o his_o grace_n may_v still_o be_v free_a and_o if_o ever_o we_o have_v any_o true_a feel_n of_o the_o work_n it_o be_v a_o evidence_n that_o we_o shall_v have_v it_o again_o or_o else_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v better_o for_o we_o know_v that_o here_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sight_n 2._o cor._n 5.7_o and_o that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n must_v be_v perfect_v in_o our_o weakness_n 2._o cor._n 12.8_o remember_v now_o what_o be_v add_v in_o the_o three_o place_n as_o a_o lively_a evidence_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o we_o know_v not_o whence_o it_o come_v nor_o whether_o it_o go_v therein_o give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o though_o we_o shall_v know_v so_o much_o of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o present_a yet_o be_v it_o still_o a_o free_a worker_n we_o may_v be_v promise_n of_o our_o god_n above_o our_o worthiness_n yea_o above_o our_o capacity_n thereof_o because_o we_o must_v still_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o so_o grow_v in_o grace_n yea_o though_o we_o do_v live_v by_o faith_n both_o in_o discern_v whereunto_o we_o be_v come_v and_o whither_o we_o may_v go_v in_o general_a yet_o see_v we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n 13.9_o 1._o cor._n 13.9_o and_o so_o at_o the_o best_a so_o far_o can_v believe_v as_o that_o still_o we_o must_v desire_v the_o lord_n to_o help_v our_o unbelief_n 8._o math._n 8._o therefore_o neither_o can_v we_o discern_v all_o only_a glory_n of_o all_o his_o mercy_n ephes_n 3.20.21_o thus_o do_v this_o metaphor_n of_o the_o wind_n evidence_n the_o manner_n of_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n that_o even_o above_o our_o apprehension_n yea_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o ordinary_a course_n as_o the_o ship_n many_o time_n sail_n by_o side_n and_o contrary_a wind_n towards_o the_o port_n and_o be_v fain_o sometime_o to_o forgo_v her_o burden_n yea_o her_o anchor_n to_o that_o so_o she_o may_v escape_v the_o storm_n and_o ride_v safe_o to_o the_o haven_n so_o be_v we_o lead_v along_o in_o this_o work_n of_o grace_n to_o this_o end_n consider_v we_o further_o that_o our_o new_a birth_n and_o growth_n in_o grace_n be_v compare_v to_o a_o combat_n express_v therein_o as_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o growth_n which_o be_v by_o a_o continual_a bicker_n and_o contention_n between_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o flesh_n so_o thereby_o also_o give_v we_o some_o direction_n how_o to_o discern_v the_o manner_n thereof_o even_o by_o a_o continual_a fight_n and_o wrestle_v within_o we_o whence_o arise_v these_o conclusion_n that_o as_o the_o spirit_n prevail_v two_o way_n either_o by_o strengthen_v we_o to_o overcome_v the_o present_a tentation_n or_o else_o by_o leave_v we_o to_o the_o particular_a tentation_n for_o the_o present_a thereby_o either_o to_o arm_v we_o better_o against_o the_o same_o hereafter_o that_o so_o we_o may_v after_o a_o foil_n attain_v a_o more_o glorious_a victory_n or_o though_o it_o leave_v we_o to_o be_v foil_v by_o the_o particular_a tentation_n yet_o it_o do_v by_o that_o foil_n prevent_v and_o overcome_v that_o which_o may_v be_v more_o dangerous_a therefore_o 1._o that_o we_o then_o grow_v in_o grace_n when_o we_o make_v advantage_n of_o our_o foil_n to_o prevent_v after_o fall_v or_o be_v recompense_v in_o our_o foil_n with_o more_o humility_n and_o repentance_n to_o be_v prepare_v to_o further_a trial_n 2._o that_o whatsoever_o duty_n we_o perform_v if_o there_o be_v not_o both_o a_o struggle_a before_o hand_n by_o the_o flesh_n to_o hinder_v the_o act_n thereof_o and_o a_o combat_n after_o by_o the_o spirit_n to_o purge_v the_o same_o of_o hypocrisy_n formality_n etc._n etc._n we_o have_v little_a comfort_n either_o of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o or_o of_o our_o growth_n therein_o 3._o that_o the_o discern_a of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n be_v rather_o by_o the_o issue_n and_o success_n of_o the_o combat_n then_o by_o the_o present_a wrestle_a because_o for_o the_o present_a through_o violence_n of_o tentation_n and_o heat_n of_o affection_n strive_v there_o against_o our_o faith_n be_v now_o exercise_v be_v so_o intentive_a in_o the_o encounter_n that_o it_o have_v enough_o to_o do_v to_o keep_v it_o own_o therein_o and_o therefore_o no_o marvel_n if_o as_o it_o need_v not_o so_o it_o can_v discern_v for_o the_o present_a sensible_a growth_n therein_o 4._o see_v our_o great_a valour_n in_o this_o life_n be_v fulfil_v that_o the_o just_a must_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o sure_o as_o herein_o the_o lord_n envy_v our_o own_o good_a principal_o so_o also_o do_v he_o aim_v at_o the_o condition_n of_o other_o with_o who_o we_o can_v but_o be_v conversant_a in_o this_o militant_a estate_n sure_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n be_v admirable_a in_o this_o dispensation_n of_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n whether_o we_o respect_v general_o the_o whole_a mixture_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a or_o else_o consider_v they_o several_o if_o we_o regard_v they_o together_o do_v not_o the_o conscience_n of_o our_o want_n necessary_o bind_v we_o to_o communion_n as_o have_v need_n of_o other_o help_v have_v matter_n daily_o to_o exercise_v our_o love_n to_o other_o and_o so_o prevent_v singularity_n and_o separation_n the_o very_a bane_n of_o true_a comfort_n and_o so_o prove_v a_o gracious_a mean_n to_o preserve_v unity_n even_o by_o this_o difference_n in_o supply_v each_o other_o want_n and_o thereby_o to_o maintain_v love_n which_o be_v the_o bond_n of_o perfection_n be_v not_o the_o church_n the_o communion_n of_o saint_n and_o be_v not_o our_o different_a and_o several_a want_n the_o mean_n of_o maintain_v the_o fellowship_n and_o be_v not_o this_o the_o mean_n to_o prepare_v we_o to_o the_o heavenly_a communion_n rom._n 12._o 1._o cor._n 12._o 2._o consider_v we_o they_o several_o be_v they_o such_o as_o belong_v to_o god_n how_o do_v the_o conscience_n of_o our_o want_n provoke_v we_o to_o tender_v their_o case_n be_v they_o yet_o without_o how_o do_v this_o inflame_v we_o to_o bring_v they_o in_o that_o they_o may_v be_v one_o with_o we_o be_v they_o within_o and_o yet_o behind_o we_o how_o do_v this_o enable_v we_o cut_v of_o our_o own_o experience_n we_o the_o crumb_n that_o fall_v from_o their_o table_n how_o do_v our_o infirmity_n provoke_v they_o to_o hasten_v we_o to_o heaven_n by_o do_v their_o worst_a how_o do_v we_o by_o do_v our_o best_a hasten_v they_o to_o destruction_n yet_o how_o do_v our_o weak_a measure_n of_o grace_n bridle_v they_o sometime_o in_o their_o wickedness_n how_o do_v they_o flatter_v themselves_o in_o their_o counterfeit_a holiness_n see_v in_o outward_a thing_n they_o seem_v to_o equal_v and_o go_v beyond_o we_o how_o do_v our_o infirmity_n become_v a_o occasion_n to_o excuse_v they_o in_o their_o profane_a wickedness_n see_v we_o be_v in_o semblance_n as_o bad_a as_o they_o these_o be_v some_o of_o the_o effect_n which_o arise_v from_o our_o imperfect_a state_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o wicked_a if_o we_o shall_v consider_v the_o consequent_n of_o this_o state_n of_o weakness_n that_o in_o regard_n hereof_o we_o be_v stranger_n in_o the_o world_n and_o traveller_n to_o our_o country_n which_o be_v above_o do_v not_o this_o imperfect_a condition_n fit_o sort_v hereunto_o do_v it_o not_o gracious_o further_o we_o both_o in_o the_o one_o and_o other_o concern_v our_o former_a condition_n that_o we_o be_v stranger_n in_o the_o world_n have_v not_o our_o wise_a god_n so_o dispose_v that_o general_o though_o we_o be_v adopt_v into_o the_o church_n yet_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o abode_n sometime_o in_o mesech_n and_o converse_v in_o the_o world_n as_o part_v of_o our_o dowry_n and_o jointure_n recover_v for_o we_o by_o christ_n and_o yet_o so_o use_v it_o as_o if_o we_o use_v it_o not_o that_o we_o may_v approve_v our_o repose_n in_o and_o pursuit_n of_o a_o better_a inheritance_n by_o lay_v up_o a_o good_a foundation_n hereby_o against_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o can_v we_o do_v this_o unless_o we_o be_v stranger_n in_o the_o world_n not_o only_o stranger_n in_o affection_n not_o to_o set_v our_o heart_n thereon_o but_o also_o stranger_n in_o action_n to_o as_o use_v it_o but_o for_o our_o inn_n to_o

passion_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o be_v actual_a transgression_n of_o the_o righteous_a law_n rom._n 7.9_o 3_o and_o whatsoever_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n be_v never_o so_o little_o dally_v with_o or_o entertain_v in_o the_o heart_n 4_o much_o more_o if_o the_o heart_n delight_n and_o be_v tickle_v therewith_o as_o foolish_a wish_n dream_n etc._n etc._n but_o also_o injoin_v both_o a_o sincere_a heart_n to_o our_o neighbour_n 1._o tim._n 1.5_o as_o also_o holy_a thought_n and_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o ourselves_o 1._o thess_n 5.23_o ephes_n 4.23_o and_o still_o command_v we_o to_o strive_v against_o all_o lust_n and_o evil_a motion_n rom._n 7.22_o 2._o cor._n 12.7_o 8_o 9_o and_o so_o approve_v sincerity_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o thereby_o gracious_o further_a repentance_n so_o we_o increase_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o well-doing_n but_o of_o these_o more_o full_o afterward_o in_o the_o rule_n thus_o we_o have_v discern_v what_o measure_v of_o grace_n we_o may_v attain_v unto_o in_o this_o life_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v empty_v in_o ourselves_o to_o give_v the_o lord_n the_o only_a glory_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o daily_o hold_v of_o our_o head_n christ_n jesus_n and_o not_o of_o ourselves_o and_o so_o be_v still_o strive_v and_o hasten_v forward_o to_o perfection_n which_o that_o we_o may_v the_o rather_o do_v consider_v we_o in_o the_o next_o place_n some_o special_a rule_n and_o direction_n for_o our_o further_a trial_n and_o comfort_n herein_o the_o content_n of_o the_o seven_o chapter_n 1._o that_o god_n require_v of_o we_o according_a to_o the_o mean_v he_o give_v 2._o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o us._n 3._o that_o there_o be_v diverse_a measure_n of_o grace_n and_o yet_o each_o have_v hereof_o be_v threefold_a 1_o the_o difference_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o themselves_o as_o first_o that_o some_o be_v general_a to_o all_o both_o elect_a and_o reprobate_n as_o those_o which_o concern_v the_o manage_n of_o their_o personal_a and_o public_a occasion_n for_o this_o life_n as_o all_o civil_a and_o moral_a gift_n of_o skill_n and_o knowledge_n concern_v personable_a disposition_n and_o common_a trade_n vocation_n and_o science_n and_o so_o such_o gift_n of_o wisdom_n diligence_n etc._n etc._n for_o the_o better_a execution_n of_o either_o second_o some_o be_v special_a concer-cerning_a only_o the_o elect_n and_o these_o also_o be_v either_o general_a to_o all_o as_o simple_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n such_o as_o faith_n love_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n or_o they_o be_v special_a respect_v their_o several_a calling_n and_o limit_v occasion_n therein_o which_o be_v neither_o simple_o require_v in_o all_o as_o gift_n of_o tongue_n prophesy_v etc._n etc._n at_o least_o not_o in_o all_o in_o the_o like_a measure_n and_o at_o all_o time_n as_o assurance_n of_o faith_n joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n suffer_v constant_o for_o the_o truth_n gift_n of_o miracle_n etc._n etc._n 2_o the_o different_a dispensation_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n to_o several_a person_n diverse_o according_a to_o their_o calling_n and_o occasion_n as_o suitable_a thereunto_o rom._n 12.6_o 7_o 8._o ephes_n 4.6_o 7_o 8._o as_o first_o not_o give_v all_o sort_n of_o gift_n unto_o any_o but_o unto_o some_o one_o gift_n some_o another_o as_o their_o call_v and_o which_o be_v diverse_a first_o both_o according_a to_o the_o diverse_a measure_n and_o occasion_n thereof_o second_o as_o also_o to_o the_o different_a assistance_n of_o god_n for_o the_o present_a therein_o three_o or_o difference_n of_o opposition_n against_o the_o same_o from_o all_o these_o arise_v many_o comfortable_a rule_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o first_o though_o the_o first_o kind_n of_o gift_n be_v common_a to_o all_o sort_n yet_o see_v also_o they_o be_v bestow_v upon_o the_o elect_n 5.6_o 1._o king_n 5.6_o therefore_o hereby_o also_o may_v we_o discern_v the_o measure_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n 1._o that_o as_o we_o receive_v these_o common_a gift_n by_o our_o right_n in_o christ_n so_o we_o daily_o improve_v and_o renew_v our_o right_n in_o christ_n by_o the_o holy_a use_n of_o they_o sanctify_v they_o unto_o ourselves_o by_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n as_o warrant_v thereto_o and_o enable_v therein_o and_o sanctify_v we_o unto_o they_o by_o renew_v our_o repentance_n and_o covenant_n with_o our_o god_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n that_o so_o justify_v hereby_o our_o right_n in_o they_o we_o may_v both_o first_o improve_v they_o faithful_o in_o the_o right_a manner_n and_o true_a end_n thereof_o second_o wait_v patient_o upon_o our_o god_n in_o the_o issue_n of_o the_o same_o and_o three_o reap_v comfort_n and_o benefit_n by_o whatsoever_o success_n that_o if_o it_o speed_v not_o according_a to_o our_o endeavour_n we_o may_v yet_o have_v comfort_n in_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o labour_n and_o much_o more_o comfort_n that_o these_o be_v not_o the_o main_a and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v good_a for_o we_o to_o be_v disappoint_v in_o these_o that_o we_o may_v make_v sure_a of_o better_a evidence_n and_o be_v more_o faithful_a in_o the_o best_a gift_n and_o if_o our_o success_n be_v answerable_a to_o our_o endeavour_n herein_o also_o we_o may_v have_v comfort_n of_o the_o special_a blessing_n in_o
