of_o work_n why_o because_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n itself_o by_o which_o we_o be_v hold_v once_o and_o bind_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o law_n be_v dead_a what_o be_v it_o that_o we_o be_v hold_v by_o why_o the_o law_n as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n as_o gal._n 3.23_o but_o before_o faith_n come_v we_o be_v keep_v under_o the_o law_n shut_v up_o unto_o faith_n which_o shall_v put_v into_o we_o new_a thought_n and_o new_a apprehension_n of_o god_n beget_v within_o we_o new_a strength_n and_o assistance_n give_v we_o new_a end_n in_o our_o work_n and_o not_o in_o that_o way_n of_o outward_a and_o literal_a performance_n which_o be_v the_o way_n of_o the_o old_a covenant_n here_o he_o speak_v plain_o of_o the_o old_a covenant_n show_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o that_o obedience_n which_o that_o produce_v and_o that_o which_o the_o new_a covenant_n bring_v forth_o therefore_o what_o he_o call_v flesh_n in_o the_o former_a verse_n by_o weigh_v the_o scope_n covenant_n of_o work_n 2_o but_o when_o may_v a_o man_n walk_n be_v say_v to_o be_v such_o a_o pure_a legal_a walk_v or_o a_o walk_n after_o the_o law_n as_o it_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n answ_n 1._o when_o a_o man_n obedience_n arise_v from_o and_o be_v draw_v out_o mere_o by_o the_o law_n when_o the_o law_n be_v principle_n motive_n and_o all_o in_o a_o man_n obedience_n when_o a_o man_n do_v this_o good_a avoyd_v that_o evil_a from_o no_o other_o principle_n upon_o no_o other_o ground_n or_o motive_n but_o because_o the_o law_n say_v do_v the_o one_o avoid_v the_o other_o there_o be_v three_o thing_n in_o the_o law_n which_o do_v draw_v forth_o that_o obedience_n which_o be_v pure_o legal_a 1_o there_o be_v command_n and_o prohibition_n in_o the_o law_n command_n of_o holiness_n prohibition_n of_o sin_n 2_o threaten_n of_o punishment_n 3_o promise_n of_o reward_n annex_v to_o these_o command_n and_o prohibition_n of_o the_o law_n now_o when_o i_o do_v a_o thing_n bare_o because_o the_o law_n command_v i_o to_o do_v it_o or_o promise_v i_o a_o reward_n in_o or_o for_o my_o do_v thereof_o or_o threaten_v with_o some_o penalty_n to_o be_v inflict_v in_o case_n i_o neglect_v it_o and_o contrariwise_o when_o i_o forbear_v a_o thing_n bare_o because_o the_o law_n forbid_v it_o and_o promise_v i_o a_o reward_n in_o or_o for_o forbear_v and_o threaten_v i_o if_o the_o root_a principle_n which_o be_v in_o those_o person_n with_o who_o this_o covenant_n be_v make_v a_o example_n whereof_o we_o have_v in_o the_o pharisee_n scribe_n and_o other_o of_o those_o day_n wherein_o they_o live_v who_o do_v express_o affirm_v and_o maintain_v that_o justification_n and_o salvation_n be_v attaineable_a by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v so_o zealous_a for_o the_o same_o and_o give_v themselves_o up_o to_o the_o observance_n thereof_o to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v be_v justify_v and_o save_v which_o very_a principle_n of_o they_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n both_o in_o our_o text_n and_o in_o many_o other_o place_n in_o the_o roman_n and_o galatian_n call_v flesh_n so_o that_o a_o man_n then_o walk_v legal_o according_a to_o the_o flesh_n when_o by_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n he_o seek_v to_o obtain_v life_n salvation_n and_o justification_n when_o a_o man_n because_o he_o pray_v and_o hear_v and_o mourn_v and_o his_o tear_n his_o fasting_n his_o humiliation_n his_o lamentation_n his_o leave_v of_o sin_n and_o do_v of_o good_a stand_v engage_v as_o it_o be_v to_o give_v he_o heaven_n and_o salvation_n he_o than_o walk_v legal_o when_o the_o course_n and_o stream_n of_o his_o life_n and_o action_n run_v this_o way_n that_o all_o his_o prayer_n humiliation_n resolution_n covenant_n resist_v of_o sin_n etc._n etc._n be_v to_o this_o very_a end_n that_o god_n hereby_o will_v be_v move_v to_o pardon_v his_o sin_n justify_v he_o give_v he_o heaven_n and_o eternal_a life_n which_o have_v he_o not_o god_n at_o the_o bottom_n though_o darkness_n fear_n terror_n etc._n etc._n at_o the_o top_n 2_o there_o be_v other_o who_o be_v not_o only_o free_v from_o condemnation_n but_o enjoy_v and_o believe_v this_o their_o freedom_n and_o know_v that_o the_o law_n their_o former_a husband_n have_v now_o nothing_o to_o do_v with_o they_o but_o they_o be_v only_o under_o the_o command_n of_o christ_n who_o of_o all_o other_o the_o most_o excellent_a walk_v this_o gospel-walk_a it_o excel_v a_o pure_a natural_a walk_n or_o a_o legal_a walk_n in_o a_o pure_a natural_a walk_n there_o the_o principle_n be_v natural_a light_n &_o natural_a conscience_n in_o a_o legal_a walk_n there_o the_o principle_n be_v fear_n and_o apprehension_n of_o wrath_n but_o now_o in_o a_o gospel-walk_a the_o principle_n be_v the_o spirit_n now_o by_o how_o much_o the_o principle_n be_v more_o excellent_a by_o so_o much_o the_o action_n duty_n the_o walk_n be_v more_o excellent_a as_o let_v a_o man_n have_v two_o servant_n one_o serve_v he_o out_o of_o love_n and_o from_o a_o principle_n of_o ingenuity_n because_o he_o have_v receive_v some_o favour_n from_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o master_n the_o other_o serve_v he_o for_o fear_n or_o in_o hope_n to_o receive_v somewhat_o from_o his_o master_n he_o do_v the_o most_o excellent_a service_n that_o serve_v he_o out_o of_o love_n and_o from_o ingenuity_n because_o christian_a he_o be_v a_o pure_a gospel-walking_a it_o be_v the_o high_a sublimest_n the_o most_o excellent_a walk_v on_o this_o side_n the_o walk_n of_o glorify_a saint_n in_o heaven_n which_o shall_v be_v a_o mighty_a encouragement_n to_o we_o all_o to_o press_v after_o this_o gospel-walk_a use_v 2._o this_o show_v we_o why_o there_o be_v such_o a_o mystery_n in_o gospel-walking_a that_o a_o mere_a natural_a man_n can_v conceive_v what_o manner_n of_o walk_v a_o gospel-walk_a be_v why_o because_o gospel-walking_a be_v a_o walk_n after_o the_o spirit_n the_o natural_a man_n say_v the_o apostle_n perceive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n neither_o can_v he_o know_v they_o because_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v though_o a_o natural_a man_n have_v knowledge_n and_o insight_n into_o the_o thing_n of_o nature_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o morality_n because_o these_o be_v within_o the_o sphere_n of_o his_o reason_n and_o natural_a understanding_n and_o also_o
from_o the_o seven_o that_o the_o first_o glorious_a appear_v of_o god_n at_o this_o time_n it_o shall_v be_v among_o the_o common_a people_n the_o tent_n of_o judah_n as_o vers_n 7._o i.e._n such_o as_o have_v not_o sumptuous_a palace_n to_o dwell_v in_o but_o be_v right_a jacob_n plain_a man_n dwell_v in_o tent_n poor_a people_n or_o the_o mean_a sort_n of_o people_n not_o the_o poor_a of_o all_o who_o have_v no_o tent_n no_o place_n of_o habitation_n but_o be_v very_a vagrant_n and_o beggar_n nor_o the_o rich_a who_o have_v their_o palace_n and_o royal_a house_n but_o a_o middle_a sort_n of_o people_n live_v in_o a_o plain_a but_o a_o honourable_a and_o comely_a way_n as_o the_o way_n of_o live_v in_o tent_n be_v these_o shall_v god_n first_o glorious_o appear_v among_o and_o the_o reason_n seem_v to_o be_v give_v in_o the_o seven_o verse_n that_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o house_n of_o david_n i.e._n that_o such_o as_o be_v of_o princely_a and_o noble_a blood_n dwell_v in_o court_n and_o sumptuous_a palace_n or_o depend_v upon_o such_o place_n may_v not_o magnify_v themselves_o against_o i.e._n may_v not_o as_o all_o along_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n to_o now_o mind_n it_o the_o command_v of_o the_o law_n as_o they_o be_v hagar_n command_n i.e._n as_o they_o come_v to_o a_o poor_a soul_n only_o as_o a_o terrible_a voice_n of_o word_n without_o power_n
