devil_n and_o how_o prove_v he_o that_o the_o lust_n of_o your_o father_n you_o will_v do_v as_o those_o that_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v the_o work_n of_o god_n be_v assure_o the_o child_n of_o god_n even_o so_o they_o that_o be_v ready_a to_o do_v the_o work_n of_o satan_n be_v without_o doubt_n the_o child_n of_o satan_n and_o if_o they_o will_v pray_v unto_o their_o father_n they_o must_v pray_v unto_o the_o devil_n again_o in_o that_o very_a place_n it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o spirit_n help_v our_o infirmity_n for_o we_o know_v not_o what_o to_o 26_o rom._n 8._o 26_o pray_v as_o we_o ought_v but_o the_o spirit_n itself_o make_v request_n for_o we_o with_o sigh_n that_o can_v be_v express_v where_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o best_a of_o god_n servant_n without_o the_o help_n and_o assistance_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v ignorant_a both_o of_o the_o matter_n and_o manner_n of_o prayer_n but_o the_o spirit_n do_v inform_v their_o mind_n what_o to_o ask_v and_o frame_v their_o affection_n how_o to_o ask_v in_o a_o holy_a and_o acceptable_a sort_n so_o that_o albeit_o sometime_o they_o want_v word_n to_o express_v their_o meaning_n yet_o they_o be_v full_a of_o inward_a sigh_n and_o heavenly_a desire_n but_o what_o be_v they_o the_o better_a for_o they_o will_n some_o say_v if_o they_o can_v pour_v they_o forth_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o outward_a form_n of_o prayer_n they_o be_v much_o the_o better_a because_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o 27._o verse_n he_o that_o search_v the_o heart_n know_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o he_o so_o know_v it_o that_o he_o approve_v of_o it_o and_o delight_v in_o it_o if_o there_o be_v never_o so_o many_o good_a word_n and_o those_o utter_v by_o the_o very_a saint_n of_o god_n themselves_o yet_o if_o they_o proceed_v not_o from_o the_o spirit_n but_o from_o the_o flesh_n as_o sometime_o they_o may_v they_o be_v not_o please_v unto_o the_o lord_n but_o abhor_v of_o he_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n albeit_o there_o be_v no_o word_n at_o all_o as_o many_o time_n it_o fall_v out_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v oppress_v through_o extremity_n of_o grief_n yet_o if_o there_o be_v a_o multitude_n of_o holy_a desire_n in_o the_o soul_n stir_v up_o through_o the_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n they_o be_v accept_v of_o he_o and_o shall_v be_v reward_v by_o he_o for_o as_o it_o be_v add_v in_o the_o place_n above_o name_v the_o spirit_n even_o at_o such_o time_n make_v request_n for_o the_o saint_n according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o their_o suit_n according_a with_o his_o will_n he_o can_v but_o yield_v unto_o the_o same_o again_o it_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o convince_v the_o judgement_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o humble_v 8._o john_n 16._o 8._o the_o heart_n therefore_o without_o which_o there_o can_v no_o faithful_a prayer_n be_v make_v unto_o the_o lord_n bring_v never_o so_o strong_a reason_n to_o adulterer_n or_o gamester_n or_o saboth-breaker_n or_o any_o that_o live_v in_o the_o continual_a practice_n of_o such_o dangerous_a and_o damnable_a sin_n and_o press_v they_o never_o so_o forcible_o to_o cause_v they_o to_o forsake_v their_o lewd_a and_o wretched_a course_n and_o yet_o can_v they_o not_o see_v why_o they_o shall_v leave_v they_o but_o rather_o imagine_v that_o they_o may_v lawful_o follow_v the_o same_o still_o and_o no_o marvel_n for_o till_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n do_v set_v down_o their_o carnal_a reason_n it_o can_v never_o be_v set_v down_o and_o till_o he_o stop_v their_o mouth_n they_o will_v never_o be_v silence_v but_o still_o have_v somewhat_o to_o say_v for_o their_o wretched_a and_o vile_a behaviour_n place_n reason_n collect_v from_o the_o former_a place_n see_v then_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o god_n spirit_n alone_o can_v persuade_v we_o of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o our_o heavenly_a father_n towards_o we_o that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v in_o case_n to_o pray_v unto_o he_o and_o withal_o must_v furnish_v we_o with_o the_o matter_n and_o help_v we_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o prayer_n and_o humble_v we_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o our_o own_o miserable_a want_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v more_o earnest_a and_o fervent_a in_o the_o request_n that_o we_o make_v the_o point_n now_o in_o hand_n may_v hence_o be_v strong_o conclude_v to_o wit_n that_o none_o can_v make_v a_o faithful_a prayer_n without_o the_o special_a aid_n and_o direction_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o serve_v use_v 1_o first_o for_o the_o confutation_n of_o those_o senseless_a people_n that_o will_v be_v talk_v and_o brag_v how_o they_o pray_v day_n and_o night_n they_o that_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o lift_v up_o a_o fervent_a prayer_n unto_o the_o heaven_n do_v easy_o discern_v that_o they_o be_v but_o mere_a bragger_n and_n boaster_n and_o that_o indeed_o they_o never_o make_v one_o faithful_a prayer_n since_o they_o be_v bear_v because_o they_o be_v and_o still_o have_v be_v sensual_a and_o carnal_a and_o utter_o void_a of_o any_o sanctify_a grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o therefore_o so_o far_o be_v they_o from_o have_v any_o cause_n of_o rejoice_v in_o regard_n of_o their_o good_a prayer_n as_o they_o call_v they_o that_o they_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o as_o be_v work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o not_o of_o the_o spirit_n such_o as_o do_v rather_o provoke_v the_o lord_n displeasure_n against_o they_o then_o pacify_v his_o anger_n or_o any_o way_n procure_v his_o favour_n towards_o they_o such_o be_v the_o prayer_n of_o all_o blind_a and_o ignorant_a papist_n who_o pray_v in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n to_o who_o it_o may_v be_v say_v as_o it_o be_v by_o our_o saviour_n unto_o the_o son_n of_o zebedeus_n you_o know_v not_o what_o you_o ask_v they_o may_v speak_v what_o they_o listen_v of_o their_o often_o pray_v and_o how_o ready_o they_o can_v go_v through_o with_o their_o stint_n and_o task_n but_o they_o that_o understand_v what_o it_o be_v to_o bring_v god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n together_o in_o earnest_a request_n and_o fervent_a supplication_n can_v but_o judge_v they_o to_o be_v brag_a pharise_n who_o think_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v behold_v unto_o they_o and_o indebt_v unto_o they_o for_o such_o prayer_n whereas_o in_o truth_n he_o may_v just_o condemn_v they_o unto_o hell_n for_o the_o same_o and_o will_v do_v so_o if_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v for_o they_o as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o iniquity_n and_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v indeed_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n be_v of_o another_o mind_n for_o when_o they_o have_v use_v the_o best_a preparation_n that_o possible_o they_o can_v they_o find_v so_o many_o defect_n in_o their_o prayer_n that_o they_o be_v drive_v to_o make_v a_o new_a prayer_n for_o the_o pardon_v of_o those_o their_o want_n and_o be_v stir_v up_o hearty_o to_o praise_v the_o lord_n when_o they_o can_v in_o any_o poor_a measure_n pour_v out_o their_o soul_n before_o he_o as_o know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o from_o any_o strength_n that_o they_o have_v in_o themselves_o but_o from_o the_o help_n and_o furtherance_n of_o his_o good_a spirit_n second_o let_v this_o be_v a_o instruction_n unto_o we_o that_o if_o we_o will_v pray_v aright_o and_o speed_v according_o we_o labour_v as_o jude_n exhort_v to_o pray_v in_o the_o 20._o jude_n v._n 20._o holy_a ghost_n for_o those_o be_v the_o petition_n that_o pierce_v the_o heaven_n and_o bring_v peace_n &_o comfort_n unto_o the_o conscience_n but_o how_o shall_v we_o know_v whether_o our_o prayer_n proceed_v from_o god_n spirit_n or_o not_o for_o our_o sinful_a heart_n be_v apt_a to_o deceive_v we_o on_o both_o side_n viz._n either_o to_o make_v we_o think_v through_o satan_n suggestion_n that_o we_o do_v not_o pray_v in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n because_o we_o have_v so_o many_o frailty_n when_o in_o truth_n we_o do_v or_o that_o we_o pray_v as_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v because_o we_o have_v matter_n and_o word_n at_o will_n when_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n but_o only_o a_o natural_a gift_n of_o utter_v that_o which_o be_v in_o our_o mind_n and_o memory_n in_o apt_a and_o fit_a term_n and_o in_o a_o fluent_a manner_n of_o speech_n therefore_o if_o we_o
mercy_n unto_o his_o church_n he_o will_v seek_v to_o destroy_v all_o nation_n that_o come_v against_o jerusalem_n that_o be_v all_o the_o enemy_n that_o do_v oppose_v themselves_o unto_o his_o people_n and_o endeavour_v to_o hinder_v his_o good_a work_n in_o they_o and_o for_o they_o now_o when_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o will_v seek_v to_o destroy_v they_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o as_o he_o have_v a_o resolution_n to_o overthrow_v they_o so_o he_o will_v provide_v mean_n whereby_o it_o shall_v be_v effect_v then_o further_o in_o the_o ten_o verse_n he_o set_v down_o the_o mean_n how_o his_o people_n shall_v be_v bring_v to_o such_o excellency_n i_o will_v pour_v upon_o the_o house_n of_o david_n and_o upon_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o jerusalem_n the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n etc._n etc._n signify_v that_o he_o will_v vouchsafe_v unto_o his_o church_n under_o the_o gospel_n a_o more_o plentiful_a measure_n of_o his_o spirit_n that_o as_o they_o shall_v have_v more_o excellent_a and_o clear_a and_o powerful_a mean_n so_o they_o shall_v find_v a_o great_a blessing_n upon_o the_o use_n of_o those_o mean_n that_o whereas_o under_o the_o law_n they_o have_v but_o drop_n of_o grace_n distil_v easy_o &_o by_o little_a and_o little_a now_o they_o shall_v have_v whole_a bucket_n full_a as_o it_o be_v yea_o whole_a flood_n of_o grace_n pour_v down_o upon_o all_o sort_n of_o god_n servant_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n be_v mean_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n and_o of_o regeneration_n so_o call_v both_o because_o it_o be_v give_v out_o of_o god_n free_a grace_n and_o favour_n as_o also_o because_o it_o work_v grace_n and_o goodness_n in_o all_o such_o as_o be_v endue_v therewith_o this_o spirit_n be_v further_o describe_v by_o a_o special_a effect_n viz._n that_o it_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n till_o such_o time_n as_o man_n be_v make_v partaker_n hereof_o they_o may_v use_v many_o word_n of_o prayer_n but_o they_o be_v altogether_o idle_a and_o vain_a fruit_n of_o their_o flesh_n and_o not_o of_o their_o faith_n such_o as_o they_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o be_v humble_v for_o and_o no_o reason_n at_o all_o to_o be_v comfort_v in_o but_o when_o once_o they_o have_v this_o spirit_n put_v into_o their_o heart_n they_o can_v call_v upon_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o acceptable_a and_o comfortable_a manner_n then_o next_o be_v show_v whither_o this_o spirit_n lead_v they_o to_o wit_n unto_o christ_n they_o shall_v look_v on_o he_o who_o they_o have_v pierce_v when_o man_n begin_v to_o pray_v in_o a_o religious_a and_o conscionable_a manner_n they_o disclaim_v all_o fleshly_a help_n and_o hope_n and_o betake_v themselves_o unto_o their_o saviour_n who_o they_o have_v pierce_v by_o their_o sin_n for_o it_o consideration_n hereof_o will_v cause_v they_o to_o be_v trouble_v and_o grieve_v at_o the_o very_a heart_n which_o grief_n be_v set_v out_o by_o two_o special_a circumstance_n two_o wit_n by_o the_o to_o be_v the_o heir_n of_o the_o family_n and_o they_o lose_v he_o and_o so_o be_v disappoint_v of_o their_o hope_n than_o they_o usual_o mourn_v with_o a_o exceed_a bitter_a lamentation_n as_o the_o woman_n of_o the_o city_n of_o nain_n do_v for_o the_o death_n of_o her_o only_a son_n luke_n 7._o 11._o such_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v shall_v be_v the_o sorrow_n of_o all_o true_a penitent_a principal_a family_n of_o levi._n whence_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o all_o family_n without_o exception_n be_v tie_v to_o this_o work_n and_o ought_v joint_o and_o several_o to_o perform_v the_o to_o hate_v they_o and_o to_o be_v out_o of_o like_n with_o yourself_o for_o they_o who_o be_v it_o that_o enable_v you_o to_o take_v god_n part_n against_o they_o and_o to_o strive_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o be_v free_v from_o the_o bondage_n of_o they_o be_v it_o not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o work_v all_o these_o good_a thing_n in_o you_o and_o why_o then_o shall_v you_o make_v earnest_o to_o long_o for_o it_o for_o the_o lord_n say_v in_o the_o prophecy_n of_o isaiah_n i_o will_v pour_v water_n upon_o 3._o isa_n 44._o 3._o the_o thirsty_a and_o flood_n upon_o the_o dry_a therewith_o as_o the_o ground_n with_o water_n when_o it_o stand_v in_o need_n thereof_o but_o what_o shall_v they_o be_v the_o better_a for_o this_o what_o benefit_n shall_v they_o find_v thereby_o the_o prophet_n tell_v we_o in_o that_o very_a place_n verse_n 4._o they_o shall_v grow_v as_o among_o the_o grass_n and_o as_o willow_n by_o the_o river_n of_o water_n no_o rain_n can_v make_v the_o bless_v people_n and_o shall_v be_v bless_v what_o course_n soever_o they_o meet_v withal_o and_o what_o opposition_n soever_o they_o find_v either_o from_o satan_n himself_o or_o from_o any_o of_o his_o limb_n those_o that_o be_v once_o ingraff_v into_o christ_n and_o be_v become_v plant_n of_o the_o live_a god_n have_v the_o stream_n of_o live_a water_n run_v through_o their_o heart_n and_o therefore_o must_v of_o necessity_n prosper_v and_o flourish_v though_o the_o heat_n of_o persecution_n or_o any_o manner_n of_o affliction_n beat_v never_o so_o violent_o upon_o they_o indeed_o if_o wicked_a enemy_n of_o the_o church_n can_v withdraw_v and_o withhold_v god_n spirit_n from_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n than_o may_v they_o hinder_v their_o happiness_n and_o make_v they_o true_o miserable_a but_o see_v they_o can_v no_o more_o stay_v the_o operation_n thereof_o than_o they_o can_v stop_v the_o course_n of_o the_o wind_n from_o blow_v whither_o it_o will_v therefore_o and_o confess_v their_o hide_a corruption_n never_o fervent_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o save_a grace_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n nor_o perform_v any_o such_o duty_n apart_o as_o all_o christian_n be_v bind_v to_o do_v such_o kind_n of_o person_n may_v assure_v themselves_o that_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o right_a with_o god_n and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n which_o draw_v those_o in_o who_o it_o reign_v unto_o the_o performance_n of_o good_a duty_n apart_o as_o well_o as_o with_o company_n in_o their_o closert_n in_o their_o chamber_n in_o the_o field_n or_o in_o some_o such_o private_a place_n or_o other_o as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o church_n or_o with_o the_o whole_a society_n where_o they_o live_v how_o much_o more_o be_v those_o to_o be_v condemn_v who_o be_v so_o far_o from_o serve_v the_o lord_n in_o secret_a that_o they_o either_o refuse_v to_o do_v it_o in_o public_a or_o if_o they_o afford_v their_o bodily_a presence_n yet_o they_o be_v idle_a or_o profane_a or_o wanton_a in_o their_o look_n and_o in_o their_o gesture_n let_v all_o that_o be_v near_o they_o see_v the_o vile_a disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n by_o their_o lewd_a and_o abominable_a carriage_n these_o sinful_a wretch_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v excuse_v by_o be_v at_o religious_a exercise_n that_o they_o be_v much_o to_o be_v condemn_v for_o that_o in_o the_o land_n of_o righteousness_n as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v they_o work_v wickedness_n and_o in_o the_o place_n where_o they_o shall_v show_v all_o manner_n of_o holiness_n they_o express_v such_o notable_a profaneness_n these_o be_v even_o like_o judas_n who_o be_v plot_v to_o betray_v his_o master_n even_o then_o when_o he_o be_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o they_o shall_v speed_v even_o as_o he_o do_v for_o when_o affliction_n and_o misery_n seize_v upon_o they_o as_o come_v it_o will_v soon_o or_o late_a if_o they_o prevent_v it_o not_o by_o hearty_a repentance_n then_o shall_v they_o not_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v before_o the_o lord_n nor_o before_o the_o face_n of_o their_o accuse_a conscience_n but_o shall_v be_v overwhelm_v with_o horror_n and_o amazement_n and_o be_v more_o ready_a to_o lay_v violent_a hand_n on_o themselves_o then_o to_o seek_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o mercy_n who_o they_o have_v so_o heinous_o and_o presumptuous_o offend_v second_o let_v we_o hence_o learn_v to_o be_v the_o same_o alone_a for_o matter_n of_o godliness_n as_o we_o be_v in_o company_n and_o to_o do_v duty_n when_o no_o body_n see_v we_o even_o because_o god_n behold_v we_o as_o well_o as_o when_o many_o eye_n be_v cast_v upon_o us._n this_o will_v be_v a_o testimony_n unto_o our_o soul_n of_o great_a sincerity_n and_o uprightness_n and_o these_o private_a exercise_n of_o religion_n will_v marvelous_o fit_v we_o for_o the_o public_a and_o thence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o many_o be_v so_o loath_a to_o appear_v before_o god_n in_o the_o congregation_n or_o in_o the_o family_n and_o do_v feel_v the_o service_n of_o god_n so_o tedious_a and_o wearisome_a because_o their_o heart_n have_v not_o be_v exercise_v therewith_o in_o secret_a for_o he_o that_o deal_v with_o his_o own_o soul_n alone_o shall_v find_v so_o many_o defect_n in_o himself_o that_o he_o will_v be_v very_o desirous_a of_o the_o help_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o public_a assembly_n therefore_o let_v we_o tie_v ourselves_o every_o day_n to_o spend_v some_o time_n in_o meditate_v on_o the_o word_n in_o search_v our_o heart_n in_o humble_v ourselves_o for_o our_o offence_n past_a and_o present_a in_o pray_v to_o the_o lord_n to_o strengthen_v we_o where_o we_o be_v weak_a to_o resolve_v we_o where_o we_o be_v in_o doubt_n to_o show_v we_o our_o error_n and_o to_o direct_v we_o in_o the_o right_a way_n to_o let_v we_o see_v our_o want_n and_o to_o supply_v they_o of_o his_o rich_a grace_n let_v we_o i_o say_v constant_o perform_v these_o and_o the_o like_a duty_n in_o secret_a and_o then_o shall_v it_o be_v plain_a unto_o our_o soul_n that_o we_o be_v guide_v by_o god_n
