delude_v his_o own_o heart_n and_o deceive_v himself_o about_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v convenient_a to_o try_v ourselves_o whether_o sin_n have_v not_o dominion_n indeed_o there_o be_v many_o erroneous_a deceit_n power_n six_o deceit_n from_o the_o unsensiblenesse_n of_o its_o power_n 1._o one_o be_v the_o unsensibleness_n of_o its_o power_n when_o a_o man_n feel_v no_o violence_n of_o sinful_a inclination_n no_o stir_n no_o opposition_n no_o command_n but_o there_o be_v a_o calm_a and_o quietness_n in_o his_o spirit_n and_o in_o hilgay_n which_o can_v not_o be_v as_o he_o think_v if_o sin_n have_v dominion_n anâ—â—â—e_v in_o he_o now_o this_o be_v a_o deceit_n for_o 1._o it_o be_v most_o probable_a that_o sin_n have_v the_o strong_a dominion_n where_o the_o heart_n be_v most_o unsensible_a of_o the_o law_n and_o command_n of_o sin_n when_o the_o strong_a man_n keep_v the_o house_n all_o be_v quiet_a say_v our_o saviour_n where_o subjection_n be_v peaceable_a there_o dominion_n be_v in_o all_o likelihood_n most_o absolute_a and_o complete_a nay_o this_o be_v certain_a that_o where_o christ_n set_v up_o his_o sceptre_n which_o cast_v down_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v the_o great_a stir_n the_o law_n of_o the_o mind_n will_v war_v against_o the_o law_n of_o the_o member_n rom._n 7._o 23._o and_o the_o spirit_n will_v lust_n against_o the_o flesh_n gal._n 5._o 17._o 2._o this_o unsensibleness_n and_o quietness_n may_v arise_v partly_o from_o the_o oneliness_n of_o sin_n and_o partly_o from_o the_o ignorance_n of_o a_o sinful_a condition_n and_o partly_o from_o the_o habitual_a custom_n
holiness_n as_o a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o traitor_n when_o he_o yet_o do_v seem_v to_o do_v something_o of_o the_o service_n to_o a_o prince_n so_o sin_n may_v be_v a_o man_n lord_n though_o he_o do_v do_v many_o thing_n which_o seem_v good_a herod_n love_v herodias_n though_o he_o hear_v john_n baptist_n and_o do_v many_o thing_n glad_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o man_n where_o christ_n be_v profess_v that_o be_v so_o universal_o bad_a but_o he_o may_v now_o and_o then_o do_v something_o which_o may_v be_v particular_o good_a at_o least_o material_o consider_v 4._o but_o yet_o fourthly_a the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n can_v consist_v with_o holiness_n but_o it_o can_v consist_v with_o the_o love_n of_o holiness_n the_o love_n of_o holiness_n for_o where_o sin_n be_v in_o dominion_n there_o sin_n have_v the_o love_n of_o the_o soul_n now_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o love_v sin_n and_o to_o love_v holiness_n i_o grant_v it_o that_o many_o thing_n may_v be_v the_o object_n of_o love_n though_o there_o be_v a_o numerical_a variety_n of_o they_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o objective_a unity_n they_o may_v all_o meet_v in_o one_o common_a reason_n and_o natural_a course_n of_o love_n and_o therefore_o may_v be_v love_v but_o then_o opposite_a and_o contradictory_n thing_n can_v be_v both_o love_v at_o once_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o you_o can_v reconcile_v they_o into_o a_o objective_a unity_n that_o which_o be_v a_o reason_n of_o the_o love_n in_o one_o be_v a_o reason_n of_o hatred_n in_o the_o other_o now_o sin_n and_o holiness_n be_v opposite_a they_o be_v at_o the_o great_a distance_n in_o spiritual_a contradiction_n their_o nature_n and_o course_n and_o effect_n all_o be_v opposite_a so_o that_o a_o man_n can_v at_o once_o possible_o love_v they_o both_o and_o therefore_o if_o holiness_n and_o grace_n have_v thy_o love_n very_o sin_n have_v not_o dominion_n i_o must_v not_o insist_v at_o large_a on_o this_o only_o observe_v whether_o thou_o love_v holiness_n preciselie_o and_o pure_o for_o itself_o what_o be_v it_o which_o thou_o esteem_v most_o which_o thou_o desire_v most_o be_v the_o want_n of_o it_o thy_o great_a grief_n be_v the_o prosperity_n of_o it_o either_o in_o thyself_o or_o other_o a_o true_a and_o singular_a joy_n unto_o thou_o at_o what_o pain_n be_v thou_o to_o purchase_v and_o increase_v it_o what_o be_v thy_o thought_n of_o they_o who_o be_v holy_a and_o of_o those_o ministry_n which_o edge_n and_o work_n on_o thy_o heart_n most_o unto_o holiness_n these_o and_o such_o like_a thing_n will_v show_v whither_o thou_o love_v holiness_n which_o if_o thou_o do_v thy_o sin_n be_v not_o thy_o lord_n 4._o who_o law_n do_v thou_o approve_v and_o delight_v in_o according_a in_o who_o law_n do_v thou_o approve_v and_o delight_v in_o as_o a_o man_n lord_n be_v so_o be_v his_o law_n and_o according_a as_o the_o man_n be_v so_o be_v his_o mind_n and_o affection_n towards_o those_o law_n of_o that_o lord_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o when_o sin_n have_v dominion_n there_o sin_n have_v several_a law_n several_a command_n the_o obedience_n of_o which_o be_v delightful_a to_o the_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o such_o a_o one_o be_v say_v to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o to_o commit_v sin_n with_o greediness_n ephes_n 4._o 19_o and_o to_o yield_v himself_o over_o my_o case_n be_v miserable_a sol._n to_o which_o case_n divers_a thing_n must_v be_v say_v answer_v answer_v 1._o repetition_n or_o renew_n of_o the_o same_o sinful_a act_n be_v fearful_a repetition_n before_o it_o second_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o dark_a and_o rare_a exemplarity_n of_o such_o kind_n of_o sin_v by_o any_o in_o scripture_n canonize_v for_o saint_n or_o godly_a person_n it_o be_v easy_o admit_v that_o you_o may_v espy_v upon_o some_o of_o the_o best_a something_o of_o the_o worst_a and_o perhaps_o thick_o heap_v upon_o the_o same_o sudden_a passion_n and_o temptation_n but_o you_o shall_v rare_o find_v any_o one_o of_o they_o often_o at_o the_o same_o foul_a transgression_n i_o say_v you_o shall_v rare_o find_v it_o and_o believe_v i_o it_o will_v be_v a_o stagger_a case_n to_o any_o sin_v heart_n where_o its_o wage_n be_v such_o as_o to_o see_v multitude_n of_o the_o worst_a and_o scarce_o any_o one_o of_o good_a note_n so_o pace_v and_o walk_v nay_o three_o until_o the_o soul_n thus_o sin_v do_v bestow_v infinite_a labour_n grace_n be_v hardly_o discern_v in_o such_o a_o one_o without_o much_o labour_n labour_n strong_a care_n continue_a humbling_n incessant_a cry_n to_o raise_v itself_o again_o in_o respect_n of_o any_o other_o evidence_n it_o shall_v hardly_o or_o never_o distinguish_v the_o yet_o secret_o remain_v the_o miserable_o deface_a strengthning_n of_o the_o contrary_a grace_n and_o act_n diligent_a fear_n fervent_a communion_n with_o god_n and_o more_o upright_o walk_v yet_o fourthly_a though_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a case_n this_o double_n or_o renew_v case_n yet_o this_o though_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a be_v a_o possible_a case_n of_o some_o great_a sinful_a act_n very_o few_o good_a man_n do_v it_o and_o that_o too_o very_o seldom_o perhaps_o as_o job_n speak_v so_o they_o may_v do_v once_o have_v i_o speak_v yea_o twice_o but_o i_o will_v proceed_v no_o further_o job_n 40._o 5._o i_o say_v though_o it_o be_v rare_a carriage_n arise_v from_o want_n of_o faith_n to_o exalt_v god_n and_o from_o the_o enthral_v of_o our_o heart_n to_o the_o world_n we_o be_v under_o either_o the_o discouragement_n of_o the_o world_n uprightness_n of_o heart_n or_o life_n he_o who_o will_v know_v no_o lord_n but_o christ_n and_o no_o safety_n like_o that_o of_o god_n and_o no_o good_a like_o that_o which_o be_v heavenly_a his_o
