principle_n not_o know_v the_o remove_n of_o their_o habitation_n thither_o nor_o think_v that_o they_o be_v there_o he_o that_o read_v these_o thing_n let_v he_o not_o strive_v to_o comprehend_v they_o but_o be_v content_a with_o what_o he_o feel_v thereof_o suitable_a to_o his_o own_o present_a estate_n and_o as_o the_o life_n grow_v in_o he_o and_o he_o in_o the_o life_n and_o he_o come_v to_o meet_v with_o the_o thing_n and_o exercise_n speak_v of_o the_o word_n and_o experience_n concern_v they_o will_v of_o themselves_o open_a to_o he_o and_o be_v useful_a and_o serviceable_a to_o he_o so_o far_o as_o the_o lord_n please_v he_o keep_v to_o the_o leading_n savour_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n in_o in_o himself_o wherein_o alone_o his_o knowledge_n sight_n growth_n and_o experience_n be_v safe_a now_o he_o that_o will_v travel_v safe_o in_o spirit_n unto_o the_o land_n of_o life_n let_v he_o wait_v to_o have_v these_o thing_n follow_v write_v by_o the_o finger_n of_o god_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o the_o sense_n and_o impression_n thereof_o preserve_v fresh_a in_o he_o first_o it_o be_v the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n which_o begin_v the_o work_n of_o redemption_n which_o cause_v the_o light_n to_o shine_v which_o work_v the_o repentance_n or_o turn_v from_o the_o dead_a state_n and_o also_o the_o belief_n in_o and_o turn_v towards_o the_o live_a god_n second_o it_o be_v the_o same_o grace_n alone_o that_o can_v preserve_v and_o cause_v the_o plant_n of_o grace_n to_o grow_v if_o there_o be_v a_o withdraw_n of_o the_o light_n a_o withhold_v of_o the_o free_a influence_n that_o which_o depend_v thereupon_o can_v retain_v its_o freshness_n which_o the_o lord_n may_v do_v as_o often_o as_o he_o please_v for_o the_o chastisement_n of_o the_o rebellious_a part_n or_o for_o the_o trial_n of_o his_o pure_a life_n and_o virtue_n in_o his_o plant_n three_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n visit_v the_o soul_n in_o the_o death_n in_o the_o darkness_n in_o the_o fall_v estate_n beget_v life_n anew_o in_o it_o make_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n light_n in_o the_o lord_n open_v a_o eye_n in_o it_o to_o see_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n a_o ear_n to_o hear_v and_o distinguish_v between_o the_o sound_n of_o life_n and_o of_o death_n a_o heart_n to_o turn_v from_o and_o refuse_v the_o vanity_n and_o to_o turn_v towards_o and_o abide_v in_o the_o live_a substance_n four_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n carry_v on_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n by_o draw_v lead_v and_o act_v the_o quicken_a soul_n by_o exercise_v that_o which_o he_o have_v beget_v in_o the_o life_n under_o the_o law_n of_o the_o life_n thus_o the_o life_n draw_v the_o soul_n daily_o near_o and_o near_o towards_o the_o everlasting_a spring_n and_o from_o the_o fade_a emptiness_n of_o sin_n vanity_n and_o the_o creature-hood_n and_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o enliven_a virtue_n daily_o follow_v on_o after_o the_o life_n in_o the_o leading_n spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o there_o be_v a_o live_a soul_n beget_v by_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o the_o live_a soul_n daily_o live_v in_o the_o grace_n and_o travel_n in_o the_o virtue_n thereof_o from_o the_o unbelief_n to_o the_o faith_n from_o the_o enmity_n to_o the_o love_n from_o the_o perverseness_n to_o the_o straitness_n from_o the_o iniquity_n to_o this_o righteousness_n even_o from_o all_o the_o territory_n of_o the_o darkness_n and_o also_o from_o the_o weak_a measure_n and_o degree_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o life_n towards_o the_o fullness_n itself_o even_o until_o it_o perfect_o centre_n in_o and_o be_v full_o fill_v therewith_o five_o where_o there_o be_v a_o stop_n of_o the_o virtue_n receive_v from_o the_o grace_n and_o not_o a_o answer_n of_o it_o in_o the_o heart_n there_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n be_v stop_v if_o the_o soul_n follow_v not_o in_o the_o draw_n the_o drawing_z be_v lose_v as_o to_o it_o if_o the_o ear_n open_v not_o to_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o word_n or_o if_o it_o be_v not_o mix_v with_o faith_n in_o the_o heart_n hear_v it_o prove_v ineffectual_a if_o strength_n issue_n forth_o from_o the_o lord_n yet_o if_o the_o soul_n receive_v not_o the_o strength_n which_o issue_v forth_o and_o bubble_v up_o in_o it_o or_o answer_v it_o not_o in_o give_v up_o to_o it_o and_o travel_v on_o the_o soul_n abide_v where_o it_o be_v at_o least_o if_o it_o also_o retire_v not_o backward_o from_o that_o estate_n and_o condition_n whereto_o the_o life_n have_v advance_v it_o for_o if_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o life_n and_o grace_n be_v refuse_v there_o be_v a_o advantage_n give_v to_o death_n to_o re-enter_v and_o gain_v ground_n by_o its_o contrary_a virtue_n and_o power_n six_o mark_v therefore_o diligent_o how_o the_o lord_n do_v carry_v on_o the_o dispensation_n of_o his_o love_n and_o free_a grace_n even_o as_o if_o there_o be_v much_o do_v by_o the_o strength_n and_o diligence_n of_o the_o creature_n what_o wound_v of_o itself_o by_o repentance_n what_o strive_v to_o believe_v what_o wrestle_v against_o enemy_n and_o for_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o to_o keep_v the_o hope_n up_o and_o the_o distrust_n out_o what_o strict_a watch_n and_o wait_v even_o as_o if_o the_o creature_n do_v work_v out_o its_o whole_a salvation_n seven_o though_o the_o creature_n seem_v to_o do_v much_o itself_o have_v receive_v life_n from_o the_o grace_n and_o act_v abundant_o towards_o god_n in_o the_o grace_n yet_o it_o be_v the_o grace_n and_o virtue_n which_o come_v from_o the_o creator_n who_o be_v also_o the_o redeemer_n which_o indeed_o do_v all_o for_o though_o the_o creature_n repent_v real_o and_o turn_v from_o the_o darkness_n with_o its_o whole_a heart_n yet_o the_o repentance_n be_v of_o the_o virtue_n which_o flow_v from_o the_o grace_n and_o not_o of_o the_o creature_n which_o receive_v the_o grace_n and_o so_o likewise_o be_v the_o faith_n the_o love_n the_o obedience_n the_o meekness_n the_o patience_n the_o watch_v the_o wait_a the_o hope_v etc._n etc._n yea_o the_o very_a receive_v the_o grace_n be_v not_o of_o the_o creature_n but_o of_o the_o grace_n for_o the_o creature_n be_v dead_a until_o it_o be_v visit_v by_o the_o grace_n and_o by_o the_o visitation_n of_o the_o grace_n alone_o be_v make_v alive_a and_o able_a to_o receive_v it_o behold_v then_o the_o mystery_n of_o redemption_n god_n be_v all_o in_o redemption_n god_n do_v all_o therein_o as_o full_o as_o in_o creation_n it_o be_v a_o new_a creation_n even_o the_o whole_a work_n thereof_o yet_o the_o creature_n quicken_v and_o renew_v be_v in_o unity_n with_o he_o in_o his_o operation_n phil._n 2.12_o 13._o he_o who_o eye_n be_v open_v can_v read_v the_o mystery_n and_o in_o true_a understanding_n say_v if_o he_o spring_n and_o indeed_o the_o virtue_n that_o come_v from_o god_n can_v alone_o answer_v god_n and_o the_o creature_n be_v only_o accept_v with_o the_o spring_n and_o father_n of_o life_n as_o it_o be_v find_v therein_o quest_n but_o if_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n be_v wrought_v by_o god_n create_v power_n how_o come_v it_o to_o meet_v with_o so_o many_o rub_n and_o interruption_n and_o sometime_o overturning_n can_v any_o thing_n stop_v god_n create_a power_n answ_n so_o far_o as_o god_n absolute_o please_v to_o create_v nothing_o can_v stop_v or_o hinder_v but_o the_o entrance_n of_o that_o which_o he_o begin_v to_o create_v into_o the_o creature_n and_o its_o get_v a_o be_v there_o as_o also_o the_o growth_n and_o preservation_n of_o it_o there_o may_v be_v hinder_v by_o the_o force_n of_o spiritual_a enemy_n if_o the_o lord_n please_v to_o permit_v or_o by_o the_o grieve_n and_o provoke_v of_o that_o free_a power_n which_o alone_o beget_v and_o preserve_v life_n in_o
the_o heart_n object_n then_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n be_v not_o carry_v on_o by_o a_o absolute_a free-creating_a power_n answ_n the_o create_a power_n and_o preserve_a power_n be_v the_o same_o but_o the_o work_n be_v somewhat_o different_a both_o in_o the_o outward_a visible_a creation_n and_o in_o the_o inward_a new-creation_n the_o preservation_n of_o that_o which_o be_v create_v and_o plant_v unto_o its_o growth_n and_o perfection_n be_v by_o the_o same_o power_n which_o create_v and_o plant_v but_o rather_o in_o a_o way_n of_o care_n industry_n art_n and_o skill_n than_o of_o such_o immediate_a force_n and_o power_n though_o by_o the_o exercise_n and_o put_v forth_o of_o the_o same_o virtue_n and_o power_n there_o be_v three_o thing_n in_o redemption_n first_o there_o be_v the_o issue_v out_o of_o the_o free_a grace_n love_n virtue_n and_o divine_a power_n towards_o the_o creature_n second_o there_o be_v the_o open_n of_o the_o estate_n of_o the_o creature_n thereby_o convince_a and_o draw_v it_o out_o of_o the_o alienation_n from_o the_o life_n towards_o unity_n with_o the_o life_n three_o there_o be_v the_o follow_v of_o the_o creature_n after_o the_o life_n in_o the_o quicken_a virtue_n of_o the_o drawing_n through_o all_o the_o snare_n temptation_n diversion_n and_o opposition_n of_o the_o enemy_n now_o there_o be_v no_o hinder_v of_o the_o issue_v forth_o of_o the_o free_a grace_n towards_o the_o creature_n or_o of_o those_o conviction_n and_o inclination_n of_o the_o creature_n to_o follow_v which_o necessary_o ensue_v thereupon_o but_o the_o pursuit_n and_o progress_n of_o the_o creature_n or_o its_o abide_n with_o the_o quicken_a virtue_n and_o power_n may_v many_o way_n be_v interrupt_v and_o divert_v and_o so_o the_o creature_n draw_v from_o under_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o free_a covenant_n for_o though_o the_o covenant_n be_v free_a yet_o the_o creature_n only_o partake_v of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v draw_v into_o it_o and_o preserve_v in_o it_o therefore_o let_v those_o fear_n who_o feel_v the_o power_n and_o redeem_v virtue_n and_o know_v that_o notwithstanding_o the_o free_a and_o certain_a promise_n to_o the_o seed_n yet_o the_o creature_n be_v as_o clay_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o potter_n which_o may_v be_v make_v a_o vessel_n of_o honour_n or_o dishonour_v as_o he_o please_v to_o favour_v it_o or_o take_v occasion_n against_o it_o and_o who_o ever_o will_v pass_v through_o the_o work_n of_o salvation_n and_o redemption_n unto_o the_o salvation_n and_o redemption_n itself_o in_o the_o live_a virtue_n receive_v from_o the_o life_n let_v he_o keep_v fast_o hold_v on_o the_o good_a pleasure_n and_o in_o it_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o make_v his_o call_v and_o election_n sure_a work_v out_o his_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_v because_o god_n work_v in_o he_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o good_a will._n and_o walk_v diligent_o and_o industrious_o in_o this_o path_n he_o may_v attain_v the_o seal_n of_o the_o redemption_n even_o that_o mark_v which_o can_v never_o be_v wear_v out_o and_o to_o full_a assurance_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o redeem_v power_n though_o it_o be_v also_o possible_a for_o he_o afterward_o through_o much_o negligence_n &_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n whereby_o he_o be_v seal_v to_o lose_v the_o sight_n of_o the_o mark_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o assurance_n which_o be_v once_o fresh_a and_o clear_a in_o his_o spirit_n for_o a_o close_a at_o this_o time_n i_o shall_v add_v a_o few_o word_n concern_v the_o unity_n of_o god_n grace_n or_o free_a light_n of_o his_o spirit_n notwithstanding_o the_o various_a estate_n and_o condition_n of_o man_n who_o it_o visit_v and_o the_o variety_n of_o its_o operation_n there_o be_v a_o threefold_a state_n of_o man_n wherein_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n visit_v he_o first_o the_o gentile-state_n or_o state_n of_o nature_n second_o the_o jew-state_n or_o gospel-state_n or_o state_n of_o faith_n where_o the_o principle_n be_v raise_v the_o seed_n live_v and_o that_o be_v feel_v spring_v up_o know_v and_o enjoy_v which_o do_v the_o will_n and_o receive_v the_o promise_n now_o in_o all_o these_o the_o law_n the_o light_n the_o life_n the_o wisdom_n the_o power_n be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o but_o the_o administration_n be_v different_a in_o the_o gentile-state_n or_o state_n of_o nature_n the_o â—ight_n which_o man_n receive_v there_o to_o discover_v evil_a and_o work_v he_o into_o good_a be_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o promise_n for_o he_o have_v be_v everlasting_o shut_v up_o in_o the_o darkness_n have_v it_o not_o be_v for_o the_o promise_n and_o it_o be_v for_o the_o promise_n sake_n and_o from_o the_o free_a grace_n that_o he_o have_v any_o visitation_n in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o any_o desire_n after_o or_o leading_n towards_o the_o good_a and_o from_o the_o evil_a which_o spring_v not_o nor_o can_v spring_v from_o corrupt_a nature_n but_o from_o the_o free_a fountain_n of_o the_o new_a life_n in_o the_o law-state_n the_o light_n grow_v more_o clear_a the_o teacher_n be_v there_o discern_v and_o acknowledge_v his_o drawing_n warn_n instruction_n and_o reproof_n feel_v more_o distinct_o and_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v watchful_a continual_o exercise_v therein_o in_o the_o gospel-state_n the_o principle_n of_o life_n be_v raise_v the_o promise_a seed_n come_v the_o power_n which_o do_v the_o will_n receive_v and_o the_o light_n of_o life_n enter_v into_o and_o possess_v the_o vessel_n now_o this_o be_v the_o whole_a of_o man_n to_o wait_v on_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o life_n to_o he_o in_o his_o present-estate_n whether_o he_o be_v yet_o in_o the_o estate_n of_o nature_n or_o under_o the_o law_n or_o under_o grace_n to_o know_v whence_o his_o redemption_n spring_v and_o to_o wait_v on_o the_o redeem_v arm_n for_o the_o beginning_n progress_n and_o perfect_a of_o it_o and_o if_o he_o be_v in_o the_o feel_n of_o that_o virtue_n it_o be_v enough_o or_o if_o he_o be_v but_o keep_v longing_n and_o pant_v after_o it_o it_o be_v well_o yea_o if_o there_o be_v but_o a_o desire_n in_o he_o after_o a_o thirst_n there_o be_v hope_n nay_o if_o there_o be_v but_o the_o least_o feeling_n of_o his_o dead_a barren_a and_o senseless_a estate_n there_o be_v some_o life_n in_o he_o which_o the_o lord_n love_v and_o will_v find_v a_o time_n to_o express_v his_o bowel_n towards_o yea_o that_o which_o be_v whole_o in_o the_o darkness_n and_o shut_v up_o in_o the_o pit_n the_o lord_n have_v bowel_n in_o he_o towards_o and_o after_o many_o day_n may_v please_v to_o visit_v oh_o the_o height_n the_o depth_n the_o length_n the_o breadth_n of_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o mercy_n and_o love_n of_o god_n who_o know_v his_o yearning_n towards_o soul_n and_o his_o way_n of_o visit_v and_o redeem_n o_o my_o soul_n hope_v thou_o in_o the_o lord_n for_o evermore_o and_o leave_v not_o breathe_v towards_o he_o till_o thou_o and_o his_o whole_a creation_n be_v fill_v and_o satisfy_v with_o he_o and_o then_o fetch_v the_o full_a breath_n of_o life_n in_o he_o for_o ever_o the_o end_n a_o postscript_n i_o have_v be_v treat_v of_o the_o inward_a work_n as_o it_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o power_n and_o bring_v to_o the_o sensible_a experimental_a knowledge_n of_o the_o creature_n yet_o will_v not_o be_v so_o understand_v as_o if_o i_o make_v void_a what_o be_v do_v without_o by_o christ_n in_o his_o own_o person_n or_o any_o of_o those_o end_n and_o purpose_n for_o which_o it_o be_v wrought_v and_o appoint_v so_o to_o be_v do_v by_o the_o father_n though_o this_o i_o know_v that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o those_o thing_n with_o the_o belief_n therein_o or_o any_o practice_n and_o observation_n therefrom_o without_o the_o life_n can_v no_o more_o profit_n now_o than_o the_o jew_n literal_a knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n can_v profit_v they_o when_o they_o be_v reject_v therewith_o and_o since_o the_o apostasy_n of_o this_o latter_a age_n especial_o i_o have_v clear_o see_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n that_o the_o professor_n knowledge_n of_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o cleave_v to_o their_o apprehension_n which_o they_o gather_v therefrom_o be_v become_v a_o snare_n and_o trap_n to_o they_o to_o keep_v they_o from_o feel_v the_o power_n and_o live_v in_o the_o sensibility_n of_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o
grace_n even_o as_o the_o jew_n table_n or_o gather_v knowledge_n from_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n become_v their_o snare_n and_o trap._n the_o lord_n open_v their_o eye_n in_o his_o due_a time_n to_o discern_v it_o that_o they_o may_v not_o withstand_v that_o ministration_n and_o revelation_n of_o his_o everlasting_a gospel_n which_o god_n see_v good_a to_o visit_v the_o apostatise_v world_n with_o after_o this_o long_a dark_a night_n of_o the_o apostasy_n whereof_o those_o that_o stick_v in_o form_n or_o knowledge_n of_o thing_n from_o the_o letter_n without_o the_o power_n can_v but_o know_v what_o i_o call_v the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o what_o i_o call_v the_o light_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o one_o whereof_o be_v not_o the_o other_o but_o differ_v as_o far_o as_o spirit_n and_o flesh_n secondâ—â—_n i_o also_o own_o all_o the_o open_n and_o refreshment_n which_o they_o receive_v from_o the_o lord_n in_o read_v of_o the_o scripture_n in_o their_o public_a or_o private_a exercise_n and_o the_o experience_n which_o they_o have_v from_o god_n in_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o i_o know_v that_o these_o thing_n in_o themselves_o be_v true_a in_o their_o proportion_n however_o their_o present_a sense_n and_o hold_v of_o they_o out_o of_o that_o wherein_o they_o receive_v they_o may_v just_o be_v judge_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o servant_n three_o though_o those_o thing_n be_v true_a in_o their_o day_n and_o in_o their_o proportion_n and_o measure_n yet_o in_o they_o they_o may_v lose_v their_o virtue_n and_o die_v and_o so_o they_o not_o retain_v the_o thing_n in_o its_o life_n in_o its_o own_o principle_n in_o the_o newness_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o that_o birth_n to_o which_o god_n give_v it_o but_o only_o a_o image_n of_o it_o in_o the_o natural_a understanding_n in_o the_o earthly_a part_n in_o the_o dead_a principle_n and_o then_o their_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o their_o experience_n can_v but_o be_v corrupt_v and_o now_o become_v the_o possession_n of_o death_n and_o the_o engine_n of_o death_n in_o their_o heart_n again_o god_n have_v somewhat_o further_o to_o manifest_v even_o to_o bring_v forth_o that_o which_o they_o so_o earnest_o pray_v for_o in_o that_o day_n which_o they_o have_v abide_v in_o that_o virtue_n wherein_o they_o pray_v may_v easy_o have_v discern_v and_o embrace_v but_o be_v out_o of_o that_o and_o please_v themselves_o with_o the_o literal_a knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n they_o then_o receive_v hold_v they_o in_o the_o wise_a earthly_a part_n that_o part_n can_v but_o stumble_v at_o the_o low_a and_o contemptible_a appearance_n of_o god_n which_o be_v still_o offensive_a to_o that_o part_n the_o great_a glory_n of_o god_n be_v hide_v in_o a_o little_a seed_n and_o how_o can_v the_o great_a eye_n of_o the_o fleshly-wise_a see_v it_o we_o have_v moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n say_v the_o jew_n after_o the_o flesh_n but_o as_o for_o this_o man_n we_o know_v not_o the_o professor_n but_o as_o for_o this_o little_a seed_n of_o the_o kingdom_n or_o light_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n we_o can_v believe_v that_o all_o we_o want_v be_v to_o spring_v up_o in_o it_o now_o four_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n both_o of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o person_n to_o pass_v away_o and_o also_o of_o their_o experience_n to_o be_v give_v up_o and_o let_v fall_v in_o these_o two_o case_n follow_v first_o when_o the_o virtue_n be_v withdraw_v from_o they_o when_o death_n have_v catch_v they_o when_o they_o become_v death_n good_n for_o that_o which_o be_v receive_v from_o the_o life_n be_v only_o profitable_a to_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o life_n when_o the_o earthly_a part_n have_v catch_v they_o and_o seat_v itself_o there_o they_o then_o become_v the_o strong_a hold_v of_o the_o enemy_n and_o the_o engine_n of_o death_n to_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o then_o life_n and_o true_a relief_n be_v not_o to_o be_v have_v in_o they_o but_o where_o the_o eternal_a virtue_n please_v next_o to_o appear_v second_o when_o god_n have_v somewhat_o to_o bring_v forth_o further_o in_o the_o world_n or_o in_o any_o particular_a heart_n to_o make_v way_n for_o it_o he_o bring_v death_n upon_o that_o which_o be_v before_o live_v thus_o when_o god_n be_v please_v to_o bring_v forth_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o faith_n and_o power_n of_o his_o spirit_n he_o distress_v the_o heart_n make_v the_o foregoing_a faith_n and_o power_n appear_v weak_a and_o pass_v away_o and_o many_o time_n for_o a_o season_n shut_v up_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o unbelief_n until_o the_o fresh_a faith_n and_o fresh_a power_n spring_v up_o and_o arise_v and_o this_o cause_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o further_a dispensation_n of_o his_o eternal_a virtue_n to_o appear_v and_o the_o beauty_n of_o they_o to_o shine_v which_o they_o will_v not_o have_v do_v so_o abundant_o have_v it_o not_o be_v for_o the_o foregoing_a distress_n of_o the_o heaâ—_n theâ—â—â—â—â—e_v yet_o some_o thing_n further_o weighty_a upon_o my_o heart_n to_o lay_v before_o they_o needful_a for_o they_o to_o consider_v of_o which_o may_v be_v serviceable_a and_o helpful_a to_o they_o in_o their_o present_a condition_n if_o the_o lord_n please_v to_o open_v their_o heart_n and_o impress_v they_o thereon_o they_o be_v four_o proposition_n relate_v to_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n which_o be_v these_o follow_v first_o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n come_v from_o the_o spirit_n as_o the_o scripture_n themselves_o come_v from_o the_o spirit_n so_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o they_o be_v alone_o give_v to_o any_o man_n which_o receive_v it_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o no_o man_n live_a can_v know_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o word_n which_o the_o spirit_n speak_v but_o as_o the_o same_o spirit_n which_o speak_v they_o gives_z the_o meaning_n of_o they_o second_o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n the_o live_a knowledge_n the_o serviceable_a knowledge_n be_v 〈◊〉_d hold_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o birth_n which_o be_v of_o the_o spirit_n man_n natural_a part_n be_v not_o the_o true_a treasury_n nor_o be_v man_n reason_n to_o be_v master_n of_o any_o of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n spirit_n but_o that_o which_o hold_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o kingdom_n the_o grace_n of_o the_o kingdom_n the_o live_a experience_n be_v that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o man_n reason_n be_v for_o ever_o to_o be_v shut_v out_o of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n further_o than_o it_o bow_n be_v limit_v and_o subject_v three_o that_o the_o knowledge_n receive_v from_o the_o spirit_n be_v still_o to_o be_v try_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o spirit_n alone_o can_v keep_v it_o live_v and_o the_o spirit_n alone_o can_v tell_v whether_o the_o life_n and_o virtue_n be_v still_o in_o it_o or_o whether_o death_n have_v catch_v it_o whether_o it_o be_v manna_n fit_a for_o the_o soul_n food_n or_o manna_n once_o give_v but_o now_o corrupt_v o_o my_o dear_a friend_n wait_v to_o understand_v my_o experience_n concern_v this_o thing_n which_o be_v this_o that_o which_o i_o have_v certain_o receive_v from_o god_n and_o which_o the_o true_a birth_n at_o first_o have_v feed_v on_o the_o earthly_a birth_n will_v be_v catch_v at_o lay_v hold_n of_o and_o treasure_v up_o to_o feed_v on_o at_o another_o time_n likewise_o in_o my_o read_n of_o the_o scripture_n i_o lay_v open_a to_o this_o great_a snare_n of_o read_v in_o my_o own_o will_n and_o of_o gather_v from_o thence_o in_o my_o own_o understanding_n &_o so_o grow_v wise_a concern_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n after_o the_o flesh_n for_o though_o at_o that_o time_n i_o be_v not_o without_o live_a knowledge_n and_o experience_n of_o god_n yet_o i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o turn_v from_o the_o death_n nor_o to_o keep_v to_o the_o life_n and_o so_o the_o bad_a the_o lean_a the_o earthly_a the_o ill-favoured_a overgrew_n the_o good_a
and_o wel-pleasing_a to_o god_n and_o bring_v it_o into_o bitter_a misery_n and_o death_n o_o that_o you_o know_v be_v beget_v of_o the_o will_n of_o the_o father_n and_o keep_v the_o will_n of_o the_o father_n &_o receive_v the_o bread_n daily_o from_o his_o hand_n that_o which_o man_n conceive_v concern_v the_o scripture_n be_v not_o the_o pure_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n but_o that_o which_o the_o breast_n give_v out_o that_o be_v it_o which_o have_v the_o immediate_a life_n virtue_n and_o true_a nourishment_n in_o it_o and_o this_o must_v be_v return_v back_o into_o the_o treasury_n and_o not_o hold_v in_o the_o earthly_a part_n in_o the_o earthly_a will_n and_o understanding_n but_o receive_v from_o the_o life_n again_o when_o it_o be_v again_o need_v yea_o this_o have_v i_o often_o know_v that_o when_o i_o have_v be_v in_o great_a distress_n i_o have_v receive_v fresh_a comfort_n from_o the_o lord_n but_o run_v to_o that_o afterward_o it_o never_o be_v able_a to_o comfort_v i_o but_o more_o deep_o wound_v i_o and_o thus_o have_v the_o lord_n be_v teach_v i_o to_o live_v upon_o himself_o and_o not_o upon_o any_o thing_n receive_v from_o he_o but_o upon_o the_o life_n itself_o the_o mercy_n the_o good_a pleasure_n which_o proportion_n out_o the_o live_a bread_n daily_o to_o the_o live_a birth_n four_o it_o be_v easy_a receive_n of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o earthly_a part_n in_o the_o earthly_a wisdom_n out_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o live_a virtue_n when_o one_o read_v a_o scripture_n it_o be_v easy_a conceive_n and_o apprehend_v a_o meaning_n one_o self_n or_o take_v in_o another_o man_n meaning_n but_o it_o be_v hard_o abstain_v from_o all_o conceiving_n and_o reason_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o wait_v for_o the_o pure_a will_n and_o open_v of_o the_o spirit_n therein_o also_o it_o be_v easy_a retain_v of_o knowledge_n and_o make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o the_o will_n and_o wisdom_n of_o the_o earthly_a mind_n for_o both_o these_o be_v natural_a but_o it_o be_v hard_o deny_v the_o reason_n the_o thought_n and_o imagination_n and_o watch_v to_o the_o spirit_n o_o professor_n wait_v for_o the_o live_a appearance_n of_o god_n even_o for_o the_o freshness_n of_o his_o spirit_n in_o your_o spirit_n that_o in_o that_o which_o come_v from_o the_o spirit_n you_o may_v know_v the_o spirit_n and_o may_v also_o know_v how_o to_o turn_v to_o he_o fresh_a visitation_n of_o the_o rich_a mercy_n and_o grace_n which_o the_o everlasting_a fountain_n natural_o open_v in_o its_o own_o the_o pearl_n be_v exceed_o rich_a the_o treasure_n of_o life_n unutterable_a and_o he_o that_o will_v possess_v it_o must_v sell_v all_o for_o it_o even_o all_o his_o lust_n and_o corruption_n yea_o all_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o nature_n the_o best_a of_o his_o will_n the_o best_a of_o his_o wisdom_n most_o refine_v nay_o not_o only_o so_o but_o all_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o spirit_n all_o that_o he_o have_v hold_v or_o can_v hold_v out_o of_o the_o life_n then_o when_o he_o be_v poor_a in_o spirit_n and_o have_v nothing_o in_o himself_o but_o emptiness_n nothing_o so_o much_o as_o to_o receive_v or_o retain_v the_o life_n but_o what_o be_v form_v grow_v up_o in_o and_o be_v preserve_v in_o the_o life_n according_a to_o its_o own_o mere_a will_n and_o good_a pleasure_n then_o alone_o be_v hâ—_n fit_a to_o be_v comprehend_v and_o bring_v forth_o in_o the_o eternal_a spring_n perfect_o happy_a be_v he_o who_o be_v perfect_o possess_v thereof_o yet_o he_o be_v not_o without_o a_o proportion_n of_o blessedness_n also_o who_o be_v mourning_n after_o it_o and_o travel_v towards_o it_o which_o can_v never_o be_v attain_v by_o the_o natural_a part_n be_v retain_v the_o letter_n of_o any_o spiritual_a revelation_n or_o knowledge_n but_o
