have_v this_o knowledge_n in_o his_o head_n that_o the_o only_a way_n whereby_o i_o must_v attain_v to_o salvation_n must_v be_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n by_o believe_v on_o christ_n but_o i_o pray_v consider_v whether_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n have_v thorough_o convince_v you_o of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n question_n you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v i_o know_v that_o answer_n brief_o by_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v convince_v a_o soul_n of_o righteousness_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n it_o do_v as_o you_o hear_v take_v a_o soul_n
clear_v off_o from_o its_o own_o righteousness_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o it_o lead_v the_o soul_n to_o follow_v after_o righteousness_n still_o after_o our_o own_o righteousness_n too_o this_o alas_o he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o be_v formal_a and_o slighty_a in_o look_v after_o his_o own_o righteousness_n he_o will_v be_v formal_a and_o careless_a in_o duty_n and_o ordinance_n or_o else_o he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o neglect_v they_o he_o think_v under_o a_o notion_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v save_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o he_o be_v save_v by_o it_o but_o for_o such_o end_n as_o i_o tell_v you_o of_o before_o this_o be_v the_o way_n now_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v work_v upon_o the_o soul_n in_o in_o order_n to_o its_o salvation_n and_o then_o 2._o again_o this_o also_o the_o spirit_n be_v wont_a to_o do_v when_o he_o convince_v of_o righteousness_n he_o do_v convince_v effectual_o and_o nor_o for_o righteousness_n nor_o of_o judgement_n that_o be_v one_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n to_o reprove_v or_o rebuke_v 2._o sometime_o the_o word_n signify_v to_o make_v manifest_a or_o to_o make_v evident_a to_o make_v apparent_a so_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o john_n 3.20_o 21._o every_o one_o that_o do_v evil_a hate_v the_o light_n neither_o come_v to_o the_o light_n lest_o his_o deed_n shall_v be_v reprove_v or_o make_v manifest_a and_o it_o be_v expound_v in_o the_o next_o verse_n make_v manifest_a but_o he_o that_o do_v truth_n come_v to_o the_o light_n that_o his_o deed_n the_o full_a intendment_n of_o this_o word_n in_o this_o place_n 3._o there_o be_v another_o signification_n of_o it_o and_o that_o be_v to_o convince_v and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o margin_n he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n and_o so_o i_o remember_v it_o be_v john_n 8.46_o say_v christ_n there_o which_o of_o you_o do_v convince_v i_o of_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o same_o word_n he_o do_v not_o say_v which_o of_o you_o charge_v i_o with_o sin_n for_o they_o do_v charge_v he_o with_o sin_n enough_o and_o they_o do_v reprove_v and_o rebuke_v he_o for_o sin_n they_o say_v he_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n therefore_o that_o can_v be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n to_o charge_n or_o reprove_v he_o of_o sin_n but_o which_o of_o you_o can_v convince_v i_o of_o sin_n to_o make_v it_o apparent_a without_o gainsaying_n that_o i_o be_o guilty_a of_o any_o sin_n and_o so_o i_o think_v that_o place_n tit._n 1.9_o hold_v fast_o the_o faithful_a word_n as_o he_o have_v be_v teach_v that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a by_o sound_a doctrine_n both_o to_o exhort_v and_o to_o convince_v the_o gainsayers_a and_o so_o i_o shall_v take_v it_o in_o this_o sense_n all_o along_o when_o the_o comforter_n be_v come_v he_o shall_v assist_v you_o in_o your_o ministry_n so_o as_o he_o shall_v thereby_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o understand_v the_o unbelieving_a world_n a_o company_n of_o unbeliever_n now_o unbeliever_n they_o may_v some_o of_o they_o be_v elect_v and_o be_v elect_v and_o shall_v be_v bring_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n in_o time_n through_o the_o gospel_n and_o some_o of_o they_o be_v not_o elect_v and_o shall_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n now_o which_o of_o these_o do_v christ_n here_o mean_a when_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o world_n whether_o he_o mean_v only_o those_o unbeliever_n that_o be_v elect_v and_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o to_o believe_v so_o some_o think_v or_o whether_o he_o mean_v the_o unbeliever_n of_o the_o world_n that_o be_v never_o elect_v and_o shall_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n so_o other_o true_o i_o see_v nothing_o to_o the_o contrary_n but_o we_o may_v include_v both_o namely_o unbeliever_n that_o be_v not_o elect_v the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v come_v and_o convince_v they_o of_o sin_n though_o they_o shall_v go_v no_o further_o there_o may_v be_v conviction_n where_o no_o conversion_n follow_v and_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o convince_v of_o sin_n and_o he_o shall_v also_o convince_v unbeliever_n that_o be_v elect_v convince_v they_o effectual_o so_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o to_o conversion_n and_o i_o think_v especial_o and_o chief_o our_o saviour_n here_o mean_v those_o unbeliever_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v elect_v though_o i_o will_v not_o exclude_v the_o other_o but_o those_o especial_o that_o be_v elect_v and_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o through_o conviction_n and_o conversion_n to_o salvation_n for_o christ_n do_v speak_v these_o word_n by_o way_n of_o comfort_n to_o the_o disciple_n that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v come_v and_o assist_v they_o in_o their_o ministry_n it_o be_v some_o comfort_n indeed_o if_o any_o be_v convince_v but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o much_o comfort_n as_o to_o be_v convince_v and_o effectual_o wrought_v upon_o to_o salvation_n and_o this_o comfort_n christ_n do_v hold_v forth_o as_o a_o antidote_n against_o their_o sadness_n and_o sorrow_n upon_o his_o go_v away_o and_o then_o he_o shall_v convince_v the_o god_n and_o they_o be_v so_o convince_v at_o this_o word_n that_o they_o do_v not_o gainsay_v it_o but_o be_v prick_v in_o their_o heart_n thus_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o sin_n that_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o christ_n but_o instead_o of_o believe_v they_o murder_v he_o and_o then_o they_o be_v convince_v also_o of_o righteousness_n namely_o of_o christ_n righteousness_n that_o christ_n departure_n from_o they_o yet_o say_v christ_n you_o shall_v have_v that_o that_o be_v as_o comfortable_a to_o you_o as_o my_o bodily_a presence_n can_v be_v you_o shall_v have_v the_o coworking_a of_o the_o spirit_n with_o you_o in_o your_o ministry_n to_o make_v it_o effectual_a for_o the_o furtherance_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o poor_a soul_n for_o the_o open_n of_o this_o point_n i_o shall_v speak_v to_o these_o four_o thing_n that_o be_v employ_v and_o wrap_v up_o in_o it_o 1._o that_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o mean_n of_o the_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n of_o soul_n this_o be_v employ_v here_o they_o shall_v go_v out_o to_o preach_v and_o this_o shall_v be_v for_o their_o comfort_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v instrumental_a for_o the_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n of_o soul_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v through_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n come_v to_o be_v effectual_a for_o the_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n of_o soul_n therefore_o say_v christ_n i_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n to_o you_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n he_o shall_v make_v the_o word_n that_o you_o preach_v efficacious_a to_o further_o the_o salvation_n of_o soul_n 3._o that_o as_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n alone_o of_o itself_o can_v so_o neither_o will_v the_o holy_a ghost_n work_v efficacious_o and_o save_o to_o the_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n of_o soul_n without_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n christ_n do_v not_o say_v along_o with_o your_o ministry_n and_o shall_v work_v effectual_o and_o convince_o and_o save_o 4._o it_o be_v matter_n of_o exceed_v great_a and_o unspeakable_a consolation_n and_o joy_n to_o the_o or_o else_o all_o our_o preach_n will_v be_v but_o like_o the_o water_v of_o a_o dead_a plant_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v come_v and_o be_v present_a and_o then_o our_o preach_n our_o plant_n and_o water_v may_v be_v bless_v for_o those_o end_n for_o which_o god_n have_v appoint_v it_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v this_o that_o without_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o word_n though_o it_o be_v ordain_v of_o god_n to_o be_v a_o mean_n of_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n yet_o the_o word_n alone_o without_o the_o spirit_n can_v do_v it_o because_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n be_v too_o weak_a to_o make_v a_o impression_n upon_o our_o hard_a heart_n take_v a_o seal_n and_o set_v it_o upon_o a_o rock_n or_o stone_n it_o make_v no_o impression_n why_o because_o there_o be_v no_o pliableness_n in_o the_o rock_n or_o stone_n to_o receive_v the_o impression_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o our_o heart_n our_o heart_n be_v natural_o like_o so_o many_o stone_n therefore_o see_v what_o the_o lord_n promise_n to_o take_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o stone_n and_o to_o give_v a_o heart_n of_o flesh_n a_o soft_a heart_n the_o hardness_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o that_o when_o the_o word_n come_v as_o a_o seal_n to_o make_v a_o impression_n upon_o the_o heart_n the_o spirit_n do_v change_v the_o heart_n and_o make_v it_o pliable_a to_o receive_v the_o impression_n which_o otherwise_o it_o can_v not_o do_v you_o may_v as_o well_o make_v a_o impression_n upon_o a_o rock_n or_o stone_n as_o upon_o any_o heart_n till_o the_o spirit_n come_v and_o soften_v the_o heart_n and_o make_v it_o pliable_a to_o receive_v the_o impression_n of_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o hence_o you_o may_v observe_v that_o sometime_o when_o divers_a hear_v the_o reason_n that_o the_o most_o eminent_a able_a preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o the_o world_n that_o their_o ministry_n be_v sometime_o less_o efficacious_a than_o the_o ministry_n of_o they_o that_o be_v far_o inferior_a to_o they_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o the_o concurrence_n of_o the_o spirit_n go_v along_o with_o the_o one_o and_o not_o with_o the_o other_o you_o shall_v see_v christ_n himself_o the_o most_o eminent_a preacher_n that_o ever_o be_v under_o heaven_n john_n 22.36_o 37._o he_o preach_v there_o and_o though_o he_o do_v miracle_n before_o they_o yet_o he_o see_v his_o glory_n and_o speak_v of_o he_o when_o he_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n when_o he_o be_v most_o evangelical_n in_o his_o ministry_n than_o he_o speak_v these_o word_n whereas_o peter_n now_o that_o be_v far_o inferior_a to_o christ_n have_v the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n mighty_o pour_v down_o upon_o he_o act_v 2._o where_o the_o holy_a ghost_n fall_v down_o upon_o the_o apostle_n like_v so_o many_o fiery_a cleave_a tongue_n peter_n preach_v to_o they_o and_o he_o convert_v three_o thousand_o soul_n at_o one_o clap_v because_o of_o the_o powerful_a presence_n as_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o gospel_n of_o itself_o can_v convert_v or_o save_v any_o soul_n so_o neither_o will_v the_o holy_a ghost_n without_o the_o concurrence_n and_o preach_v of_o the_o question_n whether_o the_o lord_n do_v own_o their_o ministry_n or_o no_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o complain_v as_o the_o prophet_n isa_n 49.6_o i_o have_v labour_v in_o vain_a i_o have_v spend_v my_o strength_n for_o naught_o and_o in_o vain_a so_o the_o poor_a servant_n of_o christ_n go_v with_o a_o dead_a heart_n into_o their_o study_n and_o come_v to_o preach_v with_o a_o sad_a heart_n when_o they_o see_v no_o good_a do_v no_o save_a work_n wrought_v this_o be_v a_o very_a cut_v to_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o they_o will_v rather_o if_o they_o may_v have_v their_o will_n cease_v mention_v of_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n to_o people_n therefore_o let_v it_o be_v the_o desire_n and_o endeavour_v and_o care_n of_o people_n so_o to_o hear_v and_o receive_v the_o word_n land-flood_n it_o come_v sometime_o with_o great_a shower_n and_o storm_n but_o it_o waste_v away_o by_o degree_n insensible_o so_o in_o this_o case_n you_o shall_v have_v some_o soul_n sometime_o so_o afflict_v and_o oppress_v and_o trouble_v for_o sin_n that_o they_o can_v rest_v themselves_o nor_o let_v other_o rest_n with_o they_o they_o complain_v of_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n what_o burden_n they_o be_v under_o and_o the_o burden_n wear_v off_o by_o degree_n their_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n wear_v off_o by_o degree_n but_o how_o they_o themselves_o know_v not_o nor_o their_o friend_n neither_o but_o have_v it_o be_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o will_v not_o have_v wear_v off_o so_o ahab_n be_v convince_v of_o the_o danger_n he_o be_v in_o by_o the_o wherein_o the_o poor_a israelite_n do_v miscarry_v and_o perish_v say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 9.30.31_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v that_o the_o gentile_n which_o follow_v not_o after_o righteousness_n have_v attain_v to_o righteousness_n but_o israel_n which_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n have_v not_o attain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o such_o a_o child_n remember_v that_o christ_n have_v say_v it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o this_o child_n shall_v go_v that_o this_o comfort_n that_o this_o relation_n shall_v go_v away_o from_o you_o and_o brethren_n if_o we_o do_v believe_v that_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o we_o why_o then_o shall_v we_o be_v excessive_a in_o our_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n i_o pray_v tell_v i_o if_o to_o it_o you_o will_v take_v the_o vomit_n or_o purge_v though_o never_o so_o grievous_a to_o you_o you_o will_v take_v the_o pill_n though_o never_o so_o bitter_a to_o you_o and_o if_o he_o will_v draw_v so_o much_o blood_n from_o you_o let_v he_o take_v it_o so_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o deal_v as_o a_o wise_a physician_n he_o prescribe_v sometime_o a_o bitter_a pill_n for_o we_o to_o swallow_v down_o o_o to_o lose_v such_o a_o yoke-fellow_n or_o such_o a_o child_n this_o be_v a_o strong_a vomit_n a_o bitter_a purge_n this_o be_v like_o the_o draw_n of_o a_o man_n blood_n from_o his_o heart_n but_o our_o heavenly_a father_n know_v what_o be_v most_o expedient_a for_o we_o i_o tell_v you_o the_o truth_n say_v christ_n it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o go_v away_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o take_v so_o much_o blood_n from_o you_o that_o i_o put_v you_o upon_o the_o swallow_a of_o this_o bitter_a pill_n and_o remember_v and_o lay_v up_o this_o antidote_n against_o a_o time_n of_o need_n we_o know_v not_o how_o sudden_o any_o of_o we_o here_o before_o the_o lord_n may_v be_v call_v to_o part_v with_o our_o near_a and_o dear_a comfort_n we_o know_v not_o how_o the_o lord_n may_v deal_v with_o we_o well_o remember_v this_o antidote_n and_o lay_v it_o up_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v remember_v and_o say_v well_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o i_o that_o this_o and_o that_o comfort_n be_v take_v away_o from_o i_o and_o you_o have_v hear_v the_o reason_n o_o remember_v these_o word_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n which_o he_o speak_v to_o his_o disciple_n to_o comfort_v they_o against_o their_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o great_a comfort_n they_o have_v in_o this_o world_n nevertheless_o i_o tell_v you_o sorrow_n and_o this_o in_o the_o general_n he_o propose_v for_o their_o comfort_n namely_o say_v he_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o go_v away_o it_o be_v not_o only_o expedient_a for_o i_o but_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o go_v away_o but_o they_o can_v hardly_o think_v so_o and_o then_o he_o give_v they_o this_o reason_n say_v he_o if_o i_o go_v not_o away_o the_o comforter_n will_v not_o come_v but_o if_o i_o depart_v i_o will_v send_v he_o unto_o you_o but_o then_o they_o may_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v lord_n suppose_v the_o comforter_n do_v come_v will_v that_o make_v recompense_n for_o our_o loss_n of_o thy_o presence_n what_o if_o the_o comforter_n do_v come_v what_o if_o we_o have_v the_o presence_n of_o thy_o spirit_n yet_o thy_o presence_n may_v mouth_n he_o will_v make_v your_o ministration_n to_o be_v successful_a and_o effectual_a for_o convince_a and_o convert_v thus_o now_o christ_n do_v lay_v in_o against_o their_o sorrow_n that_o they_o may_v have_v upon_o his_o departure_n from_o they_o that_o though_o he_o go_v from_o they_o yet_o they_o shall_v have_v that_o from_o the_o promise_n that_o shall_v countervail_v all_o that_o comfort_n and_o joy_n that_o they_o have_v by_o his_o bodily_a presence_n and_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o very_a scope_n and_o intendment_n of_o these_o word_n when_o he_o be_v come_v say_v he_o he_o will_v so_o work_v with_o your_o ministry_n that_o it_o shall_v reprove_v or_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n before_o i_o come_v to_o the_o point_n because_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o have_v some_o difficulty_n in_o they_o and_o because_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v some_o variety_n in_o the_o interpretation_n of_o they_o i_o shall_v brief_o give_v you_o a_o hint_n of_o what_o i_o apprehend_v to_o be_v the_o most_o proper_a meaning_n of_o these_o word_n as_o now_o 1._o what_o do_v he_o mean_v by_o reprove_v he_o shall_v reprove_v the_o world_n 2._o what_o do_v he_o mean_v by_o the_o world_n and_o then_o 3._o how_o he_o shall_v reprove_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n i._o the_o word_n here_o
