acknowledge_v he_o be_v one_o desperate_a who_o have_v so_o much_o confidence_n in_o his_o great_a extremity_n and_o albeit_o he_o do_v acknowledge_v and_o assert_v it_o in_o a_o mild_a sense_n that_o he_o be_v without_o hope_n of_o be_v restore_v to_o this_o life_n yet_o we_o find_v not_o that_o he_o grant_v that_o this_o make_v he_o utter_v any_o thing_n in_o passion_n that_o be_v not_o to_o be_v justify_v or_o which_o he_o account_v but_o as_o wind_n it_o be_v true_a he_o do_v indeed_o utter_a such_o expression_n and_o elihu_n and_o god_n do_v convince_v he_o of_o it_o but_o for_o present_v he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o acknowledge_v any_o such_o weakness_n in_o his_o discourse_n as_o this_o interpretation_n will_v import_v that_o in_o the_o next_o chapter_n he_o labour_v to_o justify_v the_o most_o passionate_a of_o his_o desire_n and_o so_o can_v be_v think_v to_o extenuate_v or_o acknowledge_v the_o weakness_n thereof_o here_o therefore_o i_o take_v this_o verse_n to_o contain_v this_o aggravation_n of_o their_o fault_n that_o they_o slight_v and_o undervalue_v his_o condition_n and_o complaint_n and_o therefore_o deal_v so_o cruel_o and_o persidious_o with_o he_o thus_o any_o long_a to_o be_v but_o wind_n albeit_o man_n who_o be_v altogether_o and_o every_o way_n desperate_a may_v utter_v many_o thing_n impertinent_a yet_o a_o man_n only_o hopeless_a of_o life_n yet_o trust_v in_o god_n favour_n which_o be_v his_o case_n will_v not_o speak_v so_o rash_o nor_o utter_v any_o thing_n but_o that_o which_o have_v some_o weight_n in_o it_o in_o all_o this_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o job_n be_v too_o favourable_a a_o judge_n in_o his_o own_o cause_n and_o do_v entertain_v those_o thought_n of_o his_o own_o discourse_n which_o he_o dare_v not_o justify_v when_o god_n appear_v and_o so_o this_o challenge_n be_v not_o sufficient_o convince_a it_o be_v true_a in_o some_o respect_n his_o word_n be_v more_o than_o word_n or_o wind_n consider_v the_o pressure_n of_o his_o spirit_n from_o which_o they_o flow_v yet_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o what_o he_o judge_v they_o to_o be_v that_o have_v his_o friend_n only_o insist_v to_o reprove_v they_o as_o empty_v and_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o passion_n they_o have_v never_o be_v reprehend_v therefore_o by_o god_n however_o those_o general_a truth_n may_v be_v mark_v here_o 1._o whatever_o liberty_n man_n take_v in_o their_o thought_n and_o expression_n while_o they_o be_v at_o ease_n yet_o under_o trouble_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v extreme_a and_o desperate_a they_o ought_v to_o be_v very_o serious_a for_o so_o do_v job_n insinuate_v that_o in_o such_o a_o case_n they_o ought_v to_o be_v about_o more_o than_o word_n or_o wind_n 2._o it_o be_v very_o great_a cruelty_n in_o friend_n and_o a_o addition_n to_o the_o trouble_n of_o the_o afflict_a to_o mistake_v the_o carriage_n and_o expression_n of_o those_o in_o distress_n and_o to_o account_v light_o of_o what_o be_v their_o sad_a and_o serious_a exercise_n for_o so_o much_o also_o do_v job_n challenge_v of_o his_o friend_n teach_v in_o general_a that_o it_o be_v their_o fault_n to_o imagine_v they_o have_v to_o do_v only_o with_o the_o empty_a word_n of_o a_o desperate_a man_n when_o he_o speak_v so_o serious_o and_o as_o he_o think_v so_o advise_o see_v chap._n 16.4_o 3._o even_o godly_a and_o wise_a man_n under_o tentation_n be_v unfit_a judge_n of_o their_o own_o way_n and_o carriage_n that_o same_o power_n of_o tentation_n that_o drive_v they_o to_o miscarry_v may_v also_o induce_v they_o to_o justify_v their_o own_o way_n as_o here_o job_n justifi_v his_o own_o rash_a word_n and_o speech_n verse_n 27._o yea_o you_o overwhelm_v the_o fatherless_a and_o you_o dig_v a_o pit_n for_o your_o friend_n in_o this_o verse_n he_o sum_v up_o all_o the_o aggravation_n of_o their_o fault_n in_o this_o that_o no_o inhumanity_n or_o deceitfulness_n can_v go_v beyond_o their_o usage_n of_o he_o their_o cruelty_n against_o he_o be_v no_o less_o than_o the_o cruelty_n of_o fall_v
upon_o himself_o and_o do_v in_o so_o far_o call_v in_o question_n his_o holy_a and_o perfect_a nature_n and_o attribute_n 3._o though_o god_n be_v unquestionable_o righteous_a yet_o his_o dispensation_n may_v at_o sometime_o be_v such_o towards_o his_o people_n as_o they_o can_v easy_o reconcile_v his_o justice_n in_o his_o deal_n with_o the_o testimony_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n concern_v their_o own_o integrity_n for_o as_o job_n can_v not_o reconcile_v these_o two_o and_o therefore_o complain_v so_o often_o that_o the_o righteous_a god_n deal_v so_o with_o he_o who_o be_v a_o righteous_a man_n so_o this_o give_v the_o rise_n to_o bildad_n stumble_v and_o mistake_v of_o he_o who_o judge_v that_o job_n can_v not_o but_o deny_v god_n righteousness_n so_o long_o as_o he_o plead_v his_o own_o integrity_n be_v so_o sore_o afflict_v by_o god_n this_o as_o it_o betray_v our_o blindness_n who_o be_v soon_o bemi_v so_o it_o point_v out_o a_o great_a trial_n of_o a_o man_n integrity_n when_o it_o shall_v seem_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o afflict_v he_o do_v contradict_v any_o thing_n he_o can_v say_v for_o himself_o and_o yet_o he_o dare_v not_o quit_v his_o plea._n 4._o the_o study_n of_o god_n sovereignty_n will_v solve_v many_o difficulty_n in_o the_o sad_a lot_n and_o suffering_n of_o saint_n for_o this_o it_o be_v which_o job_n forget_v in_o his_o complaint_n and_o which_o bildad_n do_v not_o mind_n in_o his_o challenge_n against_o job_n otherways_o the_o study_v of_o god_n sovereignty_n in_o afflict_v will_v leave_v to_o the_o afflict_a righteous_a man_n the_o testimony_n of_o his_o good_a conscience_n and_o yet_o take_v away_o all_o ground_n of_o quarrel_v god_n sharp_a deal_n towards_o he_o verse_n 4._o if_o thy_o child_n have_v sin_v against_o he_o and_o he_o have_v cast_v they_o away_o for_o their_o transgression_n bildad_o make_v application_n of_o this_o assertion_n concern_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n first_o in_o this_o verse_n to_o the_o case_n of_o job_n child_n wish_v he_o to_o adore_v god_n justice_n in_o deal_v with_o they_o according_a to_o their_o desert_n and_o not_o to_o prove_v himself_o wicked_a by_o complain_v of_o so_o just_a a_o act_n he_o only_o propound_v the_o case_n and_o that_o very_o soft_o and_o by_o way_n of_o supposition_n that_o his_o child_n be_v cut_v off_o for_o their_o sin_n and_o leave_v the_o conclusion_n to_o be_v gather_v by_o himself_o that_o therefore_o he_o shall_v not_o quarrel_v god_n justice_n in_o this_o stroke_n this_o he_o do_v partly_o out_o of_o tenderness_n towards_o job_n who_o be_v so_o sad_o afflict_v in_o the_o loss_n of_o his_o child_n of_o who_o restauration_n there_o be_v no_o hope_n and_o partly_o because_o in_o the_o follow_a verse_n he_o infer_v the_o conclusion_n in_o a_o contrary_a direction_n concern_v his_o carriage_n in_o reference_n to_o what_o have_v befall_v he_o or_o his_o child_n in_o this_o doctrine_n concern_v job_n child_n we_o may_v observe_v these_o mistake_n and_o fail_n 1._o it_o be_v his_o error_n to_o assert_v that_o none_o be_v sudden_o cut_v off_o as_o job_n child_n be_v but_o flagitious_a man_n and_o yet_o put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o they_o and_o the_o wicked_a in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v outward_a dispensation_n of_o providence_n have_v be_v of_o old_a make_v use_v of_o to_o plead_v against_o truth_n 2._o it_o be_v his_o fail_v to_o judge_v so_o uncharitable_o of_o job_n child_n mere_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o their_o affliction_n when_o yet_o we_o find_v not_o that_o he_o have_v remark_v any_o scandal_n in_o their_o life_n uncharitableness_n towards_o other_o whether_o without_o ground_n or_o on_o light_a ground_n be_v a_o great_a sin_n and_o a_o evidence_n that_o we_o be_v but_o little_a sensible_a of_o our_o own_o fail_n see_v luke_n 13.1_o 5._o 3._o it_o be_v his_o fault_n to_o be_v so_o cruel_a to_o afflict_a job_n as_o that_o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v he_o to_o regret_n so_o sad_a a_o loss_n or_o to_o bemoan_v his_o want_n but_o he_o will_v charge_v that_o upon_o he_o as_o wickedness_n and_o a_o charge_v of_o god_n with_o injustice_n as_o the_o dependence_n of_o this_o verse_n upon_o the_o precede_a clear_v that_o to_o be_v his_o scope_n here_o many_o grain-weight_n of_o allowance_n must_v be_v give_v and_o will_v be_v give_v by_o god_n to_o afflict_a and_o break_a spirit_n yet_o this_o general_a doctrine_n abstract_v from_o his_o mistake_n and_o fail_n may_v teach_v we_o 1._o real_a guiltiness_n not_o repent_v of_o will_v pursue_v the_o sinner_n till_o it_o bring_v he_o under_o the_o lash_n of_o vengeance_n for_o this_o be_v of_o truth_n if_o man_n sin_n against_o he_o he_o will_v cast_v they_o away_o or_o send_v they_o away_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o transgression_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o original_a their_o sin_n will_v be_v the_o executioner_n by_o who_o hand_n god_n will_v send_v they_o to_o the_o pit_n thus_o sin_n will_v find_v sinner_n out_o numb_a 32.23_o and_o it_o will_v pursue_v they_o at_o the_o heel_n till_o at_o last_o it_o overtake_v they_o and_o compass_v they_o about_o psal_n 49.5_o so_o that_o a_o man_n be_v never_o secure_a be_v his_o condition_n what_o it_o will_v so_o long_o as_o he_o be_v under_o unrepented_a sin_n 2._o the_o conscience_n of_o sin_n and_o guilt_n shall_v stop_v the_o afflicted_n mouth_n and_o leave_v they_o nothing_o to_o say_v by_o way_n of_o quarrel_v of_o god_n deal_n for_o bildad_n suppose_v that_o if_o his_o assertion_n concern_v job_n child_n be_v true_a job_n shall_v have_v no_o more_o to_o say_v against_o god_n stroke_n and_o therefore_o he_o pass_v over_o the_o conclusion_n with_o silence_n put_v job_n in_o mind_n to_o be_v silent_a also_o they_o water_n 2._o that_o as_o reed_n and_o bulrush_n have_v their_o fit_n of_o sudden_a wither_v even_o when_o they_o be_v most_o green_a which_o demonstrate_v their_o want_n of_o substance_n so_o hypocrite_n get_v sudddain_a stroke_n from_o god_n that_o he_o may_v declare_v they_o to_o be_v such_o and_o he_o blast_v their_o outward_a condition_n and_o prosperity_n that_o their_o profession_n may_v be_v see_v to_o be_v blast_v by_o their_o abandon_v thereof_o in_o trouble_n as_o chap._n 4.4_o 5_o 6._o this_o doctrine_n be_v full_a of_o the_o error_n forme_o tax_v for_o 1._o if_o this_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o prosperity_n and_o outward_a condition_n of_o hypocrite_n it_o be_v not_o true_a that_o all_o of_o they_o or_o only_o they_o be_v thus_o make_v to_o wither_v within_o time_n 2._o if_o it_o be_v understand_v of_o their_o inward_a condition_n or_o spiritual_a and_o gracious_a frame_n to_o which_o they_o pretend_v though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o great_a trouble_n will_v discover_v hypocrisy_n mat._n 13.20_o 21._o isa_n 33.14_o yet_o every_o trouble_n will_v not_o make_v that_o discovery_n and_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o even_o real_a saint_n may_v have_v their_o own_o fit_n of_o blast_a and_o wither_v notwithstanding_o the_o truth_n of_o their_o grace_n for_o the_o bride_n cant._n 5.2_o and_o the_o wise_a virgin_n mat_n 25.5_o may_v fall_v a_o sleep_n and_o particular_o under_o calamity_n many_o of_o the_o superfluity_n of_o saint_n and_o some_o hypocrisy_n in_o their_o profession_n may_v be_v blow_v away_o speak_v plain_o and_o to_o the_o capacity_n of_o people_n which_o be_v indeed_o a_o necessary_a duty_n and_o a_o evidence_n of_o honesty_n for_o notional_a religion_n and_o high-flown_a conception_n about_o it_o be_v a_o evidence_n of_o emptiness_n see_v 1_o tim._n 1.4_o 5_o 6_o 7._o and_o though_o many_o do_v account_v man_n spiritual_a in_o their_o doctrine_n because_o of_o their_o sublimate_v and_o refine_v notion_n and_o expression_n yet_o christ_n condescend_v to_o preach_v in_o parable_n and_o paul_n lay_v aside_o the_o wisdom_n of_o word_n 1_o cor._n 1.17_o and_o indeed_o many_o of_o those_o fine_a conception_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o those_o entice_a word_n and_o that_o philosophy_n and_o vain_a deceit_n whereby_o the_o simplicity_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v corrupt_v and_o the_o spirit_n of_o professor_n be_v spoil_v and_o take_v off_o the_o substance_n of_o religion_n colos_n 2.4_o 8._o 2._o this_o their_o way_n of_o teach_v do_v also_o point_v out_o their_o spiritual_a mindedness_n in_o that_o as_o it_o be_v their_o care_n to_o imprint_v heavenly_a truth_n in_o their_o own_o and_o other_o mind_n by_o the_o consideration_n of_o those_o common_a object_n so_o habituate_a themselves_o and_o other_o who_o will_v hearken_v to_o their_o doctrine_n with_o meditation_n upon_o spiritual_a thing_n every_o common_a object_n represent_v to_o their_o sense_n do_v put_v they_o in_o mind_n thereof_o and_o furnish_v some_o memento_n for_o that_o end_n and_o this_o be_v a_o pattern_n most_o worthy_a of_o imitation_n 3._o whereas_o eliphaz_n in_o his_o doctrine_n speak_v much_o of_o the_o wicked_a bildad_o deal_v chief_o with_o the_o hypocrite_n such_o as_o he_o conceive_v job_n to_o be_v and_o declare_v they_o to_o lie_v under_o the_o same_o lash_n and_o vengeance_n which_o eliphaz_n declare_v to_o be_v the_o portion_n of_o the_o wicked_a hereby_o this_o may_v be_v point_v out_o which_o be_v a_o truth_n whatever_o particular_a mistake_n be_v in_o his_o doctrine_n that_o hypocrite_n especial_o gross_a dissembler_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o religion_n be_v in_o no_o less_o woeful_a case_n then_o the_o very_a wicked_a and_o open_o profane_a their_o show_n of_o godliness_n will_v help_v they_o nothing_o but_o only_o contribute_v to_o make_v up_o their_o dittay_n and_o to_o render_v their_o sin_n the_o more_o odious_a and_o their_o judgement_n the_o more_o sad_a that_o they_o have_v do_v wicked_o under_o a_o mask_n of_o piety_n and_o so_o profane_v the_o holy_a name_n of_o god_n 4._o here_o also_o some_o character_n of_o wicked_a and_o gross_a hypocrite_n may_v be_v find_v they_o be_v forgetter_n of_o god_n he_o be_v not_o much_o in_o their_o heart_n nor_o before_o their_o eye_n in_o their_o walk_n how_o near_o soever_o he_o seem_v to_o be_v in_o their_o mouth_n isa_n 29.13_o jer._n 12.2_o he_o be_v not_o own_v and_o acknowledge_v in_o the_o good_a thing_n they_o get_v nor_o his_o providence_n adore_v and_o
