dejection_n or_o else_o our_o civil_a reverence_n and_o respect_n by_o those_o reverend_a gesture_n which_o we_o use_v in_o prayer_n shall_v be_v most_o observe_v in_o public_a there_o may_v more_o liberty_n be_v take_v in_o private_a and_o in_o secret_a then_o there_o may_v in_o public_a and_o open_a prayer_n both_o in_o the_o use_n of_o outward_a gesture_n and_o in_o the_o forbearance_n of_o they_o some_o gesture_n may_v be_v use_v in_o private_a prayer_n which_o will_v become_v we_o ill_o in_o public_a in_o which_o we_o shall_v not_o go_v remarkable_o beyond_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o assembly_n for_o fear_n and_o danger_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o gesture_n on_o the_o other_o side_n may_v be_v forbear_v in_o some_o case_n in_o private_a prayer_n which_o yet_o in_o public_a ought_v not_o to_o be_v so_o for_o evermore_o in_o public_a as_o far_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a our_o gesture_n must_v be_v such_o as_o may_v express_v some_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o we_o may_v honour_v god_n before_o the_o people_n and_o that_o our_o outward_a posture_n may_v not_o carry_v in_o it_o a_o appearance_n of_o a_o sleight_n esteem_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o service_n whereas_o in_o private_a there_o be_v great_a freedom_n because_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o such_o caution_n but_o three_o this_o must_v be_v continual_o heed_v both_o in_o public_a and_o in_o private_a that_o the_o gesture_n which_o we_o use_v be_v such_o as_o that_o we_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o rather_o further_o the_o spiritual_a service_n it_o be_v far_o better_a to_o abate_v of_o the_o reverence_n of_o our_o gesture_n than_o the_o affection_n of_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v far_o better_o for_o a_o man_n to_o stand_v in_o prayer_n then_o that_o by_o the_o disease_n and_o trouble_v of_o the_o other_o posture_n he_o shall_v be_v distract_v and_o consequent_o his_o devotion_n and_o his_o heart_n shall_v fall_v that_o may_v be_v allow_v the_o weak_a in_o this_o regard_n which_o will_v not_o be_v convenient_a in_o the_o strong_a the_o bodily_a exercise_n be_v it_o of_o what_o kind_n it_o will_v be_v but_o a_o mean_n to_o the_o spiritual_a service_n the_o end_n be_v better_a than_o the_o mean_n and_o must_v be_v more_o regard_v than_o the_o mean_n i_o must_v not_o use_v the_o mean_n but_o for_o the_o end_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v serviceable_a to_o the_o end_n and_o much_o less_o must_v i_o use_v the_o mean_n aganist_n the_o end_n we_o must_v be_v very_o wary_a that_o the_o outward_a gesture_n especial_o in_o public_a prayer_n do_v not_o exceed_v the_o inward_a affection_n and_o that_o we_o make_v not_o show_v of_o more_o without_o then_o there_o be_v indeed_o within_o for_o if_o we_o do_v there_o be_v hypocrisy_n such_o duty_n be_v not_o do_v in_o truth_n when_o there_o be_v more_o in_o show_n and_o in_o appearance_n than_o there_o be_v in_o substance_n if_o either_o of_o the_o two_o be_v low_a than_o the_o other_o it_o be_v far_o better_a that_o the_o outward_a expression_n be_v low_a than_o the_o inward_a affection_n then_o that_o the_o inward_a etc._n etc._n it_o be_v far_o better_a that_o the_o gesture_n come_v short_a of_o the_o heart_n then_o that_o the_o heart_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v not_o good_a to_o compass_v god_n about_o with_o lie_n mere_a show_n do_v never_o please_v in_o his_o service_n this_o for_o the_o gesture_n your_o voice_n we_o shall_v observe_v it_o to_o have_v be_v the_o usual_a practice_n of_o the_o saint_n to_o speak_v in_o prayer_n yea_o in_o private_a prayer_n as_o our_o saviour_n do_v mark_v a_o stranger_n with_o who_o they_o have_v no_o acquaintance_n and_o to_o who_o they_o have_v no_o relation_n so_o that_o you_o see_v we_o have_v not_o only_o the_o precept_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n but_o we_o have_v also_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o may_v pray_v in_o this_o manner_n and_o therefore_o in_o this_o faith_n and_o confidence_n the_o saint_n of_o god_n have_v pray_v in_o scripture_n so_o do_v the_o church_n as_o you_o may_v see_v isa_n 63.16_o doubtless_o say_v they_o thou_o be_v our_o father_n though_o abraham_n be_v ignorant_a of_o we_o their_o prayer_n serve_v their_o lust_n and_o they_o will_v have_v god_n himself_o to_o serve_v they_o too_o if_o they_o can_v prevail_v with_o he_o and_o be_v such_o desire_n as_o these_o like_a to_o be_v raise_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n what_o will_v the_o spirit_n stir_v man_n up_o to_o pray_v for_o any_o thing_n to_o nourish_v and_o maintain_v the_o flesh_n the_o carnal_a part_n which_o be_v the_o spirit_n enemy_n the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n lu_v against_o the_o flesh_n for_o those_o two_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o another_o and_o will_v the_o spirit_n notwithstanding_o strive_v for_o that_o which_o shall_v uphold_v and_o feed_v those_o lust_n against_o which_o the_o spirit_n lu_v believe_v it_o brethren_n they_o that_o pray_v for_o any_o blessing_n to_o maintain_v their_o lust_n with_o they_o their_o pride_n intemperance_n etc._n etc._n do_v not_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n object_n but_o you_o will_v ask_v i_o then_o how_o continuance_n of_o your_o life_n be_v your_o aim_n as_o david_n be_v that_o you_o may_v praise_v and_o glorify_v the_o lord_n among_o the_o live_n psal_n 6.5_o as_o hezekiahs_n be_v loath_a he_o be_v carnal_a desire_n will_v make_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n impetuous_a and_o impatient_a of_o denial_n he_o that_o aim_v at_o satisfaction_n of_o his_o lust_n will_v not_o be_v at_o god_n disposal_n there_o will_v be_v no_o sweet_a submission_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n no_o he_o must_v have_v this_o or_o that_o and_o he_o can_v bear_v a_o check_n as_o rachel_n must_v have_v child_n or_o she_o die_v when_o once_o the_o heart_n be_v set_v on_o any_o thing_n that_o serve_v to_o feed_v a_o sensual_a appetite_n whether_o it_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n or_o the_o lust_n his_o cause_n or_o his_o poor_a distress_a servant_n be_v these_o the_o bill_n that_o you_o bring_v in_o to_o god_n and_o will_v you_o own_v they_o in_o the_o latter_a day_n brethren_n by_o your_o laying_n out_o you_o may_v discover_v to_o what_o intent_n you_o have_v pray_v for_o outward_a blessing_n whether_o to_o consume_v they_o on_o your_o lust_n or_o no_o and_o if_o that_o have_v be_v your_o end_n the_o spirit_n have_v not_o be_v your_o principle_n in_o these_o petition_n if_o we_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n we_o keep_v a_o constant_a course_n in_o prayer_n we_o do_v not_o pray_v by_o fit_n and_o start_v as_o job_n observe_v of_o the_o hypocrite_n who_o have_v not_o christ_n spirit_n job_n 27.10_o will_v he_o delight_v in_o the_o almighty_a will_v be_v always_o call_v on_o as_o fear_v and_o strong_a conviction_n and_o the_o like_a that_o may_v hold_v some_o certain_a man_n almost_o to_o a_o continue_a practice_n of_o the_o outward_a duty_n yet_o it_o be_v very_o rare_a that_o he_o be_v constant_a who_o act_v by_o his_o own_o spirit_n but_o now_o my_o brethren_n he_o that_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n be_v a_o steady_a man_n in_o prayer_n he_o can_v appeal_v to_o child_n heart_n to_o god_n even_o when_o he_o think_v that_o god_n have_v not_o a_o father_n heart_n to_o he_o though_o he_o seem_v to_o frown_v upon_o he_o and_o to_o hide_v his_o face_n and_o to_o turn_v away_o his_o prayer_n yet_o he_o have_v dear_a affection_n to_o the_o lord_n notwithstanding_o all_o this_o and_o this_o appear_v by_o the_o trouble_n he_o be_v in_o at_o god_n displeasure_n it_o grieve_v he_o so_o that_o he_o be_v sick_a of_o love_n as_o the_o poor_a church_n be_v cant._n 2.5_o when_o christ_n withdraw_v himself_o a_o while_n this_o be_v her_o grief_n i_o seek_v he_o
