prayer_n the_o other_o unlawful_a and_o therefore_o when_o your_o discourse_n say_v that_o conceive_v and_o stint_a prayer_n the_o one_o be_v no_o more_o the_o invention_n of_o man_n than_o the_o assist_v a_o man_n in_o such_o a_o prayer_n with_o holy_a manner_n of_o inward_a gracious_a affection_n as_o for_o instance_n holy_a bilney_n may_v find_v his_o heart_n warm_v in_o prayer_n to_o christ_n when_o he_o look_v at_o he_o as_o real_o present_a in_o the_o sacrament_n or_o else_o he_o will_v never_o have_v call_v so_o zealous_o on_o the_o people_n to_o turn_v all_o that_o adoration_n of_o dead_a image_n to_o the_o adoration_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o bless_a sacrament_n nevertheless_o such_o a_o prayer_n be_v unlawful_a through_o a_o defect_n in_o the_o outward_a manner_n of_o it_o a_o outward_a mean_n be_v call_v in_o for_o help_v in_o prayer_n which_o god_n have_v not_o sanctify_v for_o that_o end_n let_v i_o give_v you_o another_o instance_n when_o the_o corinthian_n pray_v in_o the_o church_n public_o in_o the_o spirit_n but_o withal_o in_o a_o strange_a tongue_n their_o prayer_n want_v not_o allowable_a and_o fit_a matter_n nor_o holy_a inward_a manner_n for_o now_o in_o question_n be_v of_o the_o like_a nature_n give_v to_o the_o like_a end_n only_o enjoin_v with_o more_o strictness_n and_o severity_n which_o make_v both_o their_o use_n less_o profitable_a apostle_n or_o their_o successor_n power_n to_o ordain_v and_o prescribe_v such_o and_o such_o manner_n of_o the_o administration_n of_o his_o holy_a thing_n as_o themselves_o shall_v see_v good_a therefore_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o excuse_v they_o from_o sin_n against_o the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o second_o commandment_n object_n if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o it_o be_v grant_v before_o by_o another_o and_o read_v out_o of_o a_o book_n answ_n we_o grant_v that_o a_o man_n may_v make_v use_n of_o another_o man_n pen_a prayer_n read_v in_o private_a not_o only_o for_o a_o example_n or_o instruction_n how_o to_o pray_v but_o also_o occasional_o for_o his_o present_a prayer_n if_o he_o find_v the_o petition_n suitable_a to_o his_o present_a occasion_n yea_o we_o grant_v further_o that_o in_o case_n one_o church_n shall_v send_v letter_n to_o another_o church_n and_o in_o the_o end_n thereof_o shall_v conclude_v with_o some_o prayer_n suitable_a to_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n to_o who_o they_o write_v we_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o the_o church_n to_o who_o the_o letter_n be_v send_v find_v the_o petition_n suitable_a to_o their_o condition_n may_v lawful_o go_v along_o therewith_o in_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o end_n say_v amen_o thereto_o and_o so_o make_v it_o their_o own_o prayer_n but_o yet_o here_o be_v two_o thing_n different_a from_o the_o case_n in_o hand_n first_o they_o that_o pen_v such_o prayer_n do_v not_o prescribe_v they_o as_o form_n of_o prayer_n for_o the_o brethren_n to_o use_v leave_v they_o free_o to_o their_o liberty_n 2._o they_o that_o take_v they_o up_o occasional_o for_o their_o present_a use_n and_o make_v they_o their_o prayer_n they_o do_v not_o set_v they_o apart_o to_o be_v read_v for_o their_o ordinary_a prayer_n either_o in_o public_a or_o in_o private_a which_o seem_v to_o we_o a_o matter_n of_o weighty_a consideration_n and_o make_v a_o great_a difference_n in_o the_o cause_n in_o hand_n to_o clear_v it_o by_o a_o familiar_a instance_n a_o man_n pass_v through_o a_o bury_a place_n may_v see_v a_o dead_a man_n scalp_n cast_v up_o and_o thereby_o take_v occasion_n from_o the_o present_a object_n to_o meditate_v for_o the_o present_a on_o his_o mortality_n and_o to_o prepare_v for_o like_a change_n but_o if_o he_o shall_v take_v up_o and_o keep_v that_o dead_a man_n scalp_n in_o his_o closet_n or_o bed_n chamber_n to_o be_v a_o ordinary_a help_n to_o he_o to_o put_v he_o in_o mind_n daily_o of_o his_o mortality_n now_o in_o so_o do_v he_o make_v a_o image_n of_o it_o to_o himself_o by_o set_v it_o a_o part_n to_o be_v a_o help_n to_o he_o in_o god_n worship_n which_o not_o be_v sanctify_a and_o set_v a_o part_n by_o god_n for_o that_o end_n it_o now_o become_v a_o sin_n to_o he_o against_o the_o second_o commandment_n in_o the_o former_a case_n he_o take_v occasion_n to_o fall_v into_o a_o present_a good_a meditation_n of_o mortality_n by_o the_o present_a sight_n of_o a_o object_n of_o mortaliy_v as_o it_o be_v set_v before_o he_o occasional_o by_o god_n providence_n wherein_o he_o do_v well_o according_a to_o the_o second_o commandment_n not_o to_o pass_v by_o such_o a_o passage_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o vain_a but_o in_o the_o latter_a case_n in_o set_v it_o a_o part_n to_o be_v a_o ordinary_a help_n to_o he_o in_o such_o meditation_n or_o enjoin_v the_o same_o to_o other_o he_o in_o so_o do_v make_v it_o to_o he_o and_o they_o a_o image_n it_o not_o be_v institute_v or_o sanctify_v by_o god_n but_o devise_v and_o set_v apart_o by_o man_n for_o such_o a_o spiritual_a end_n which_o be_v forbid_v in_o the_o second_o commandment_n if_o it_o be_v say_v again_o when_o i_o read_v prayer_n and_o sin_v some_o petition_n therein_o that_o suit_n well_o with_o my_o estate_n i_o may_v not_o only_o then_o use_v they_o for_o my_o present_a prayer_n but_o may_v again_o and_o again_o ordinary_o make_v use_n thereof_o in_o my_o own_o prayer_n answ_n we_o deny_v the_o crutch_n from_o the_o lame_a and_o bread_n from_o the_o hungry_a answ_n in_o case_n a_o distress_a soul_n do_v meet_v with_o a_o prayer_n pen_v by_o a_o godly_a and_o well_o experience_a christian_a and_o do_v find_v his_o own_o case_n pithy_o and_o ample_o decipher_v and_o anatomize_v therein_o we_o deny_v not_o but_o his_o heart_n and_o affection_n may_v go_v along_o with_o it_o and_o say_v amen_o to_o it_o and_o thus_o far_o may_v find_v it_o a_o lawful_a help_n to_o he_o but_o if_o you_o set_v a_o part_n such_o a_o prayer_n to_o support_v he_o as_o a_o crutch_n in_o his_o prayer_n as_o without_o which_o he_o can_v walk_v straight_o and_o upright_o in_o that_o duty_n or_o if_o he_o that_o pen_v that_o prayer_n or_o other_o that_o have_v read_v it_o do_v enjoin_v it_o upon_o he_o and_o forbid_v he_o to_o pray_v especial_o with_o other_o unless_o he_o use_v that_o form_n this_o instead_o of_o a_o crutch_n will_v prove_v a_o cudgel_n to_o break_v the_o bone_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n and_o force_v he_o to_o halt_v in_o worship_v god_n after_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n as_o it_o have_v be_v say_v before_o so_o it_o may_v be_v again_o remember_v here_o a_o man_n may_v help_v his_o spirit_n in_o meditation_n of_o his_o mortality_n by_o behold_v a_o dead_a man_n scalp_n cast_v in_o his_o way_n by_o god_n providence_n but_o if_o he_o shall_v set_v a_o part_n a_o death_n head_n or_o take_v it_o up_o as_o enjoin_v to_o he_o by_o other_o never_o to_o meditate_v or_o conserre_v with_o other_o about_o his_o mortality_n and_o estate_n of_o another_o life_n but_o in_o the_o sight_n and_o use_v of_o the_o death_n head_n such_o a_o soul_n shall_v find_v but_o a_o dead_a heart_n and_o a_o dead_a devotion_n from_o such_o a_o mean_n of_o mortification_n if_o some_o form_n of_o prayer_n especial_o such_o as_o give_v occasion_n to_o this_o dispute_n do_v now_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o bread_n to_o the_o hungry_a we_o say_v no_o more_o but_o this_o then_o hungry_a soul_n will_v never_o be_v starve_v that_o never_o want_v store_n of_o such_o like_a bread_n as_o this_o be_v disc_n the_o ample_a and_o particular_a lay_v out_o of_o our_o necessity_n do_v ease_v the_o heart_n and_o move_v affection_n and_o when_o this_o may_v be_v better_o do_v by_o the_o help_n of_o a_o book_n in_o prayer_n then_o of_o ourselves_o it_o be_v senseless_a to_o accuse_v the_o use_n hereof_o as_o a_o lip-labour_n and_o a_o quench_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o stint_v not_o the_o spirit_n that_o labour_v to_o blow_v the_o coal_n of_o grace_n etc._n etc._n answ_n it_o be_v true_a he_o stint_v not_o the_o spirit_n nor_o quench_v he_o that_o use_v any_o mean_n sanctify_v by_o the_o spirit_n to_o blow_v the_o coal_n of_o grace_n but_o this_o we_o deny_v that_o a_o stint_a form_n of_o prayer_n upon_o a_o book_n devise_v by_o man_n and_o enjoin_v to_o be_v use_v as_o the_o prayer_n of_o a_o christian_a soul_n be_v a_o mean_v sanctify_v by_o the_o spirit_n to_o blow_v the_o coal_n of_o his_o grace_n or_o that_o the_o repeat_n of_o such_o a_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n though_o ample_a and_o particular_a in_o lay_v out_o his_o necessity_n will_v ease_v his_o heart_n or_o move_v his_o affection_n according_a to_o god_n god_n do_v not_o delight_v ordinary_o to_o breath_n in_o the_o masterly_a injunction_n of_o brethren_n upon_o brethren_n or_o of_o one_o congregation_n upon_o another_o especial_o in_o such_o thing_n whereof_o we_o have_v neither_o precept_n nor_o precedent_n in_o the_o word_n disc_n he_o do_v not_o service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o another_o church_n for_o we_o do_v not_o find_v that_o ever_o god_n give_v warrant_n either_o for_o the_o offer_v up_o of_o read_v prayer_n to_o god_n as_o
