of_o man_n composure_n ought_v not_o and_o that_o we_o may_v as_o well_o appoint_v new_a scripture_n for_o public_a instruction_n because_o the_o inspire_a person_n do_v so_o as_o we_o may_v appoint_v new_a form_n for_o public_a worship_n because_o they_o do_v so_o but_o this_o objection_n also_o will_v be_v of_o no_o force_n if_o we_o consider_v four_o thing_n 1._o that_o this_o objection_n allow_v the_o prescribe_v of_o form_n to_o be_v lawful_a in_o its_o own_o nature_n for_o otherwise_o god_n must_v have_v do_v that_o which_o be_v unlawful_a in_o its_o own_o nature_n nay_o our_o saviour_n prescribe_v his_o form_n be_v a_o tacit_n approbation_n of_o other_o form_n that_o be_v prescribe_v before_o and_o that_o not_o only_o by_o god_n but_o by_o man_n too_o for_o the_o jew_n of_o they_o since_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n give_v a_o form_n in_o such_o circumstance_n signify_v his_o approbation_n of_o other_o form_n it_o be_v plain_a either_o that_o he_o approve_v what_o be_v evil_a or_o that_o form_n be_v lawful_a 2._o that_o this_o objection_n must_v allow_v the_o prescribe_v of_o public_a form_n to_o be_v not_o only_o lawful_a but_o also_o useful_a for_o otherwise_o god_n who_o always_o act_v for_o wise_a end_n and_o use_v the_o most_o proper_a mean_n will_v never_o have_v prescribe_v any_o form_n and_o certain_o what_o be_v once_o useful_a be_v useful_a still_o for_o 1._o we_o be_v now_o dull_a and_o carnal_a enough_o to_o need_v form_n and_o 2._o our_o saviour_n have_v prescribe_v one_o to_o be_v use_v in_o all_o age_n which_o he_o will_v not_o have_v do_v have_v it_o not_o be_v useful_a for_o the_o gospel-state_n 3._o that_o this_o objection_n must_v also_o allow_v that_o god_n prescribe_v form_n by_o inspire_a person_n may_v be_v lawful_o imitate_v by_o we_o provide_v we_o have_v the_o same_o reason_n for_o it_o and_o therefore_o governor_n may_v prescribe_v form_n as_o long_o as_o form_n be_v useful_a 4._o that_o though_o the_o other_o thus_o than_o it_o appear_v that_o some_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v command_v in_o holy_a scripture_n and_o that_o our_o governor_n be_v authorize_v by_o god_n example_n to_o prescribe_v other_o when_o they_o judge_v they_o useful_a ii_o therefore_o i_o be_o to_o prove_v that_o though_o no_o form_n be_v prescribe_v yet_o form_n be_v as_o lawful_a as_o conceive_v or_o extempore_o prayer_n certain_o there_o be_v no_o command_n of_o god_n to_o pray_v extempore_o and_o therefore_o form_n have_v a_o better_a claim_n to_o divine_a authority_n than_o they_o it_o be_v say_v indeed_o that_o wheresoever_o we_o be_v command_v to_o pray_v vocal_o we_o be_v command_v to_o pray_v in_o our_o own_o conception_n and_o word_n but_o this_o be_v a_o great_a mistake_n for_o certain_o when_o god_n command_v man_n to_o pray_v by_o his_o own_o form_n they_o do_v pray_v vocal_o though_o not_o in_o their_o own_o word_n and_o here_o let_v i_o take_v notice_n that_o dissenter_n appropriate_v the_o name_n of_o prayer_n to_o pray_v in_o their_o own_o word_n and_o call_v the_o use_v a_o form_n not_o prayer_n but_o read_v a_o prayer_n but_o sure_o the_o levites_n do_v real_o pray_v when_o they_o use_v the_o word_n of_o david_n and_o asaph_n and_o so_o do_v the_o primitive_a christian_n when_o they_o say_v the_o lord_n prayer_n and_o if_o so_o than_o a_o form_n may_v be_v true_o call_v a_o vocal_a prayer_n for_o vocal_a prayer_n consist_v in_o the_o speak_n of_o our_o devout_a affection_n to_o god_n whether_o with_o or_o without_o a_o form_n but_o they_o pretend_v that_o of_o so_o do_v he_o bid_v they_o say_v our_o father_n etc._n etc._n how_o can_v they_o think_v but_o that_o he_o design_v they_o shall_v still_o use_v a_o form_n as_o they_o do_v before_o be_v not_o great_a good_a than_o the_o gift_n of_o extempore_o utterance_n in_o prayer_n of_o which_o bad_a man_n may_v have_v a_o great_a share_n than_o the_o most_o devout_a and_o what_o be_v that_o great_a good_a but_o the_o gift_n of_o heavenly_a affection_n in_o prayer_n if_o it_o be_v urge_v that_o god_n have_v send_v forth_o the_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n crying_z abba_n father_n gal._n 4.6_o and_o among_o we_o heretofore_o all_o inspiration_n be_v attest_v by_o miracle_n but_o the_o pretend_a inspiration_n of_o prayer_n have_v no_o miracle_n to_o warrant_v it_o whereas_o if_o the_o inspiration_n be_v continue_v it_o be_v requisite_a that_o proper_a sign_n shall_v be_v continue_v that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o distinguish_v that_o which_o be_v divine_a from_o that_o it_o be_v divine_a or_o natural_a or_o diabolical_a for_o 1._o it_o be_v certain_a a_o man_n may_v pray_v agreeable_o to_o scripture_n by_o natural_a inspiration_n that_o be_v by_o a_o natural_a or_o accidental_a fervency_n of_o temper_n as_o may_v be_v prove_v by_o many_o instance_n and_o in_o this_o case_n how_o shall_v he_o know_v by_o scripture_n whether_o his_o present_a inspiration_n be_v natural_a or_o divine_a it_o will_v be_v say_v perhaps_o that_o god_n inspire_v good_a man_n with_o fervency_n in_o prayer_n and_o yet_o this_o fervency_n sometime_o proceed_v from_o temper_n of_o body_n and_o why_o do_v not_o the_o want_n of_o a_o sign_n to_o distinguish_v conclude_v against_o the_o inspiration_n of_o fervency_n as_o well_o as_o against_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o matter_n and_o word_n of_o prayer_n i_o answer_v that_o we_o have_v a_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v assistance_n for_o the_o fervency_n of_o our_o prayer_n but_o not_o for_o the_o matter_n or_o word_n of_o they_o beside_o we_o may_v easy_o distinguish_v whether_o the_o inspiration_n of_o fervency_n be_v natural_a or_o divine_a by_o our_o own_o sense_n if_o it_o be_v accompany_v with_o a_o fix_a and_o constant_a devotion_n of_o soul_n it_o be_v divine_a but_o if_o it_o be_v only_o a_o sudden_a fit_a and_o leave_v we_o habitual_o indevout_a we_o have_v just_a reason_n to_o think_v it_o natural_a but_o we_o can_v distinguish_v by_o scripture_n between_o one_o and_o the_o other_o for_o both_o may_v be_v agreeable_a to_o scripture_n and_o can_v it_o be_v imagine_v that_o have_v god_n mean_v to_o continue_v the_o gift_n of_o inspiration_n to_o we_o he_o will_v have_v leave_v we_o thus_o in_o the_o dark_a concern_v it_o without_o any_o certain_a sign_n to_o distinguish_v whether_o it_o be_v from_o his_o spirit_n or_o from_o a_o ill-affected_a spleen_n or_o a_o fever_n 2._o as_o for_o diabolical_a inspiration_n we_o have_v sundry_a instance_n such_o as_o wier_n hacket_n d._n george_n and_o john_n basilides_n duke_n of_o russia_n who_o have_v such_o gift_n of_o prayer_n as_o ravish_v the_o auditor_n and_o in_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o most_o impartial_a seem_v to_o exceed_v the_o power_n of_o nature_n and_o make_v many_o think_v they_o immediate_o inspire_a by_o god_n now_o since_o by_o such_o inspiration_n the_o devil_n may_v sometime_o serve_v his_o own_o end_n by_o recommend_v false_a teacher_n etc._n etc._n we_o may_v reasonable_o suppose_v he_o do_v use_v that_o method_n and_o since_o he_o may_v inspire_v man_n with_o such_o matter_n of_o prayer_n as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o scripture_n we_o can_v by_o scripture_n certain_o distinguish_v between_o his_o inspiration_n and_o that_o of_o the_o spirit_n but_o sure_o it_o be_v blasphemy_n to_o think_v that_o if_o god_n have_v continue_v this_o gift_n of_o inspiration_n he_o will_v leave_v we_o without_o a_o sign_n to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o that_o which_o be_v diabolical_a and_o since_o there_o be_v no_o sign_n we_o have_v all_o the_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n to_o think_v the_o gift_n be_v cease_v but_o far_o we_o have_v not_o only_o no_o certain_a sign_n of_o the_o divine_a inspiration_n of_o conceive_a prayer_n but_o many_o very_a certain_a one_o of_o the_o contrary_a i_o will_v instance_n in_o four_o 1._o the_o great_a impertinence_n nonsense_n and_o rudeness_n to_o say_v no_o worse_o that_o be_v sometime_o mingle_v with_o these_o extempore_o prayer_n and_o which_o we_o can_v attribute_v to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n without_o blasphemy_n 2._o that_o they_o be_v so_o general_o tincture_v with_o the_o particular_a opinion_n of_o those_o that_o offer_v they_o whether_o this_o be_v not_o so_o i_o appeal_v to_o all_o the_o world_n and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o sure_o they_o be_v not_o inspire_a for_o either_o we_o must_v suppose_v this_o gift_n of_o inspiration_n to_o be_v consign_v to_o one_o party_n which_o will_v be_v to_o stint_v the_o spirit_n with_o a_o witness_n or_o else_o we_o must_v blasphemous_o say_v the_o spirit_n inspire_v contradiction_n and_o indite_v contrary_a prayer_n to_o man_n of_o opposite_a party_n 3._o another_o plain_a sign_n that_o conceive_v prayer_n be_v not_o inspire_a be_v that_o that_o which_o give_v they_o the_o reputation_n of_o be_v so_o be_v not_o so_o much_o the_o matter_n as_o the_o manner_n of_o express_v the_o lord_n prayer_n whatever_o christ_n have_v institute_v without_o limitation_n of_o time_n do_v always_o oblige_v 2._o that_o his_o not_o insert_v his_o own_o name_n into_o it_o be_v no_o argument_n at_o all_o that_o he_o never_o intend_v it_o shall_v be_v use_v after_o his_o ascension_n for_o to_o pray_v in_o christ_n name_n be_v to_o pray_v in_o his_o mediation_n depend_v upon_o be_v he_o must_v many_o time_n pray_v confuse_o or_o with_o break_a indecent_a expression_n and_o omit_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o matter_n sometime_o he_o will_v be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o be_v force_v to_o use_v fulsome_a repetition_n and_o how_o be_v it_o possible_a almost_o but_o that_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o flat_a and_o empty_a nonsense_n undigested_a conception_n and_o unadvised_a expression_n shall_v escape_v from_o his_o lip_n before_o he_o be_v aware_a and_o this_o if_o he_o have_v a_o grain_n of_o modesty_n must_v put_v he_o into_o great_a confusion_n and_o so_o amaze_v he_o that_o he_o will_v be_v hardly_o able_a to_o recover_v himself_o now_o be_v it_o not_o a_o hard_a case_n that_o the_o devotion_n of_o five_o hundred_o or_o a_o thousand_o person_n must_v be_v true_a devotion_n in_o he_o i_o may_v add_v more_o but_o i_o think_v these_o thing_n be_v enough_o to_o convince_v a_o unprejudiced_a person_n that_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v so_o far_o from_o hinder_v that_o they_o very_o much_o help_v devotion_n but_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v still_o object_v that_o he_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o form_n do_v actual_o deaden_v his_o devotion_n because_o his_o affection_n be_v flat_a and_o heavy_a when_o he_o use_v they_o but_o he_o be_v almost_o transport_v when_o he_o hear_v a_o man_n pray_v extempore_o i_o beseech_v he_o to_o consider_v whether_o his_o experience_n be_v not_o found_v in_o prejudice_n and_o whether_o his_o prejudice_n ought_v to_o prescribe_v to_o the_o whole_a church_n it_o be_v certain_a other_o man_n find_v by_o experience_n that_o join_v with_o a_o form_n do_v help_v their_o devotion_n so_o that_o here_o be_v experience_n against_o experience_n now_o since_o two_o contrary_a experience_n can_v proceed_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n therefore_o one_o must_v proceed_v from_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o man._n now_o i_o have_v prove_v and_o many_o man_n find_v by_o experience_n that_o form_n and_o flatter_v and_o will_v betray_v he_o into_o strong_a delusion_n it_o be_v plain_a it_o be_v not_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o extempore_o prayer_n that_o affect_v he_o for_o that_o be_v the_o same_o as_o in_o a_o form_n and_o if_o he_o be_v take_v with_o the_o chime_a of_o word_n it_o be_v but_o a_o sensitive_a delight_n and_o he_o must_v not_o make_v a_o division_n in_o the_o church_n only_o to_o gratify_v his_o fancy_n beside_o i_o desire_v he_o strict_o to_o examine_v his_o conscience_n whether_o he_o have_v not_o often_o be_v as_o dull_a at_o a_o conceive_a prayer_n as_o at_o the_o public_a form_n if_o so_o than_o the_o person_n be_v to_o be_v blame_v and_o not_o the_o form_n and_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o a_o double_a iniquity_n who_o divide_v the_o church_n without_o these_o enlargement_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v sign_n of_o their_o immediate_a inspiration_n that_o suppose_v the_o spirit_n to_o be_v of_o the_o same_o mind_n with_o christ_n they_o be_v general_o sign_n of_o the_o contrary_n 4._o that_o extraordinary_a manner_n and_o way_n of_o express_v they_o for_o which_o they_o be_v think_v to_o be_v inspire_a ordinary_o proceed_v from_o natural_a cause_n viz._n natural_a enthusiasm_n or_o present_a fervour_n of_o temper_n for_o 1._o the_o dissenter_n confess_v it_o come_v upon_o they_o much_o often_o in_o their_o public_a than_o in_o their_o private_a devotion_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a because_o the_o passion_n of_o the_o congregation_n do_v so_o excite_v their_o affection_n and_o the_o reverence_n of_o a_o auditory_a oblige_v they_o so_o much_o to_o wreck_v their_o invention_n that_o their_o spirit_n be_v many_o time_n transport_v into_o rapture_n 2._o they_o be_v not_o so_o fluent_a in_o the_o beginning_n as_o when_o they_o have_v pray_v a_o while_n the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v this_o because_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o move_v so_o brisk_o till_o they_o be_v chafe_v and_o heat_v with_o labour_n then_o do_v they_o natural_o raise_v the_o fancy_n and_o render_v the_o invention_n more_o copious_a and_o easy_a and_o certain_o it_o be_v unwarrantable_a to_o attribute_v that_o to_o inspiration_n which_o do_v so_o apparent_o proceed_v from_o natural_a cause_n thus_o have_v i_o show_v what_o the_o extraordinary_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v pretend_v to_o in_o these_o time_n i_o proceed_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o show_v very_o brief_o what_o those_o ordinary_a operation_n be_v which_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o continue_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n they_o be_v therefore_o the_o proper_a grace_n and_o affection_n of_o prayer_n such_o as_o shame_v sorrow_n hope_v etc._n etc._n but_o as_o for_o the_o expression_n of_o prayer_n they_o be_v of_o no_o account_n with_o god_n but_o as_o they_o signify_v to_o he_o the_o grace_n and_o affection_n of_o it_o now_o can_v any_o man_n imagine_v that_o those_o affection_n will_v be_v the_o less_o acceptable_a to_o god_n because_o they_o be_v present_v in_o a_o form_n and_o not_o extempore_o will_v a_o father_n deny_v bread_n to_o his_o child_n because_o he_o ask_v it_o to_o day_n in_o the_o same_o word_n that_o he_o do_v yesterday_o be_v god_n more_o take_v with_o word_n than_o with_o affection_n certain_o his_o withdraw_a the_o inspiration_n of_o word_n and_o continue_v the_o earth_n beget_v those_o affection_n which_o render_v our_o prayer_n prevalent_a and_o these_o be_v the_o stand_n and_o ordinary_a operation_n which_o the_o scripture_n attribute_n to_o the_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n second_o stint_v or_o limit_v the_o spirit_n be_v a_o phrase_n that_o be_v never_o mention_v in_o scripture_n or_o antiquity_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o very_a new_a objection_n against_o form_n of_o prayer_n which_o i_o have_v show_v to_o be_v warrant_v both_o by_o scripture_n and_o antiquity_n however_o what_o the_o dissenter_n mean_v by_o it_o be_v this_o viz._n that_o by_o confine_v ourselves_o to_o a_o form_n of_o word_n we_o stint_n or_o limit_n that_o be_v restrain_v the_o spirit_n from_o give_v we_o that_o assistance_n which_o he_o ordinary_o vouchsafe_v in_o conceive_a prayer_n and_o now_o have_v explain_v the_o two_o forego_v particular_n the_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n will_v be_v very_o easy_a for_o if_o the_o spirit_n be_v stint_v or_o restrain_v by_o form_n of_o prayer_n it_o must_v be_v either_o from_o inspire_v the_o word_n or_o from_o exciting_a the_o affection_n of_o prayer_n but_o i_o have_v prove_v that_o form_n be_v so_o far_o from_o restrain_v the_o devotion_n of_o prayer_n that_o they_o do_v very_o much_o promote_v and_o improve_v it_o and_o as_o for_o the_o word_n i_o have_v prove_v that_o since_o the_o first_o propagation_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o spirit_n have_v withdraw_v the_o immediate_a and_o miraculous_a inspiration_n of_o they_o and_o since_o that_o can_v be_v stint_v which_o be_v not_o therefore_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o word_n of_o prayer_n be_v not_o stint_v by_o form_n 3._o it_o be_v object_v that_o public_a form_n be_v a_o sinful_a neglect_n of_o the_o ministerial_a gift_n of_o prayer_n for_o the_o dissenter_n say_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n be_v a_o ability_n to_o express_v our_o mind_n in_o prayer_n which_o god_n have_v give_v to_o minister_n as_o a_o mean_n of_o public_a devotion_n and_o therefore_o they_o may_v not_o omit_v the_o exercise_n of_o it_o by_o use_v form_n of_o other_o man_n composure_n now_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v 1._o that_o suppose_v that_o it_o be_v a_o fault_n in_o minister_n to_o omit_v the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ability_n yet_o the_o people_n be_v not_o to_o be_v charge_v with_o it_o god_n will_v not_o reject_v the_o people_n devotion_n because_o the_o minister_n be_v to_o blame_v he_o only_o be_v accountable_a for_o that_o for_o the_o people_n do_v not_o join_v with_o he_o in_o his_o omission_n but_o in_o that_o which_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n 2._o this_o gift_n of_o prayer_n be_v either_o natural_a or_o acquire_v for_o certain_o it_o be_v not_o inspire_a at_o ordination_n because_o the_o scripture_n do_v not_o promise_v any_o such_o thing_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o experience_n of_o it_o nay_o the_o dissent_v minister_n must_v own_v that_o just_a before_o their_o ordination_n they_o be_v as_o able_a to_o express_v the_o devotion_n of_o a_o congregation_n as_o they_o be_v just_a after_o which_o show_v that_o they_o have_v no_o new_a ability_n to_o pray_v inspire_a in_o their_o ordination_n now_o since_o this_o gift_n or_o ability_n be_v nothing_o more_o than_o a_o quickness_n of_o invention_n and_o speech_n which_o be_v either_o natural_a or_o acquire_v by_o art_n and_o practice_n therefore_o it_o be_v no_o otherwise_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n than_o our_o natural_a strength_n or_o skill_n in_o history_n or_o the_o like_a all_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v his_o minister_n be_v to_o concur_v with_o their_o honest_a endeavour_n as_o far_o as_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o office_n and_o to_o suppose_v that_o this_o can_v be_v do_v without_o pray_v extempore_o be_v to_o take_v the_o matter_n in_o question_n for_o grant_v 3._o this_o freedom_n of_o utterance_n be_v never_o call_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n in_o scripture_n pray_v in_o unknown_a appropriate_v by_o god_n to_o prayer_n but_o leave_v in_o common_a to_o all_o other_o honest_a use_n that_o it_o can_v be_v apply_v to_o and_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v call_v the_o gift_n of_o
