accomplishment_n yea_o sometime_o more_o as_o every_o one_o know_v by_o some_o experience_n and_o that_o he_o be_v give_v up_o and_o resign_v in_o the_o very_a beginning_n to_o come_v into_o the_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n and_o leaven_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o if_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n at_o any_o time_n to_o give_v thou_o such_o a_o experience_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o the_o many_o wander_n vain_a thought_n and_o imagination_n of_o thy_o mind_n thou_o will_v certain_o come_v to_o a_o true_a measure_n of_o clear_a discern_a of_o the_o true_a divine_a principle_n life_n and_o light_n and_o of_o the_o operation_n thereof_o so_o as_o to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o all_o that_o which_o be_v but_o natural_a and_o carnal_a as_o also_o from_o all_o that_o be_v of_o satan_n in_o his_o cunning_a transforming_n and_o although_o in_o the_o beginning_n it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a to_o thou_o to_o attain_v to_o that_o perfect_a and_o absolute_a inward_a silence_n of_o mind_n from_o all_o thy_o own_o thought_n and_o imagination_n which_o will_v afterward_o become_v easy_a and_o familiar_a unto_o thou_o as_o thou_o do_v experience_n any_o considerable_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n yet_o as_o thou_o presse_v after_o it_o thou_o will_v find_v they_o self_n help_v by_o the_o lord_n to_o come_v into_o some_o measure_n of_o true_a silence_n and_o although_o thou_o can_v not_o say_v that_o all_o vain_a foolish_a thought_n and_o idle_a imagination_n be_v put_v out_o of_o thy_o mind_n yet_o if_o a_o considerable_a part_n of_o they_o be_v go_v and_o evanished_a christ_n when_o he_o preach_v outward_o he_o speak_v with_o authority_n or_o power_n and_o not_o as_o the_o scribe_n matth._n 7.29_o and_o he_o say_v himself_o the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v unto_o you_o be_v spirit_n and_o life_n it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o quicken_v the_o flesh_n profit_v nothing_o joh._n 6.63_o and_o thus_o it_o be_v in_o the_o inward_a what_o christ_n speak_v in_o the_o soul_n or_o heart_n of_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v with_o power_n even_o with_o a_o heavenly_a power_n and_o authority_n that_o raise_v a_o awe_n and_o reverence_n in_o the_o heart_n by_o which_o dark_a blind_a deaf_a and_o stupid_a that_o many_o time_n they_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o any_o divine_a power_n or_o principle_n yet_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o speak_v in_o the_o most_o deaf_a and_o stupid_a soul_n he_o cause_v it_o to_o hear_v and_o raise_v up_o some_o small_a sense_n of_o the_o same_o in_o it_o at_o that_o present_a time_n although_o soon_o after_o darkness_n and_o death_n do_v prevail_v over_o they_o again_o and_o they_o forget_v any_o such_o experience_n as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o have_v it_o how_o do_v god_n speak_v unto_o cain_n and_o expostulate_v with_o he_o we_o read_v not_o that_o it_o be_v by_o a_o outward_a voice_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o need_n to_o suppose_v that_o when_o god_n reprove_v he_o for_o his_o anger_n against_o his_o brother_n it_o be_v by_o a_o outward_a voice_n and_o not_o rather_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n inward_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o conscience_n as_o he_o do_v reprove_v man_n at_o this_o day_n and_o that_o some_o be_v so_o become_v do_v plain_o imply_v that_o once_o they_o have_v a_o feeling_n again_o when_o a_o man_n reprove_v himself_o he_o do_v it_o too_o partial_o although_o he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o judge_n himself_o in_o the_o general_n a_o great_a sinner_n yet_o there_o be_v many_o time_n many_o particular_a sin_n whereof_o he_o be_v guilty_a that_o he_o will_v not_o reprove_v himself_o for_o by_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o or_o argument_n draw_v from_o scripture_n but_o will_v rather_o justify_v and_o defend_v himself_o for_o the_o natural_a light_n and_o natural_a understanding_n be_v exceed_o corrupt_v by_o the_o fall_n and_o therefore_o it_o can_v impartial_o witness_v against_o sin_n but_o be_v most_o ready_a to_o call_v many_o sin_n virtue_n and_o to_o this_o they_o contend_v among_o themselves_o iv._o they_o judge_v that_o this_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v only_o some_o supernatural_a accident_n or_o quality_n but_o not_o a_o substance_n and_o that_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n or_o holiness_n be_v no_o substantial_a life_n such_o as_o the_o vegetative_a sensitive_a or_o rational_a life_n or_o soul_n be_v which_o be_v a_o four_o error_n and_o be_v indeed_o the_o foundation_n of_o all_o the_o other_o three_o abovementioned_a otherwise_o it_o may_v be_v think_v no_o materal_a thing_n nor_o worth_a the_o while_n to_o contend_v whether_o the_o seed_n and_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n be_v a_o substance_n or_o accident_n it_o seem_v rather_o to_o be_v a_o question_n of_o philosophy_n and_o so_o not_o needful_a to_o be_v determine_v the_o one_o way_n or_o the_o other_o by_o they_o who_o meddle_v not_o in_o such_o matter_n but_o i_o say_v this_o make_v the_o thing_n the_o more_o needful_a to_o be_v open_v because_o the_o other_o three_o error_n and_o divers_a other_o be_v build_v on_o it_o for_o say_v they_o if_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o accident_n it_o can_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v denominate_v it_o according_a to_o its_o own_o quality_n or_o property_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v holy_a righteous_a pure_a etc._n etc._n because_o the_o seed_n be_v such_o also_o it_o can_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v be_v in_o union_n therewith_o because_o the_o essence_n or_o be_v of_o every_o accident_n consist_v in_o its_o be_v in_o union_n with_o its_o subject_n but_o say_v they_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o accident_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n now_o the_o first_o proposition_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v certain_a and_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o the_o second_o be_v false_a which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o divers_a other_o gross_a error_n and_o so_o their_o whole_a superstructure_n false_a and_o for_o the_o refutation_n of_o it_o and_o the_o confirmation_n of_o the_o truth_n viz._n that_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o substance_n and_o the_o life_n of_o holiness_n and_o grace_n be_v substantial_a i_o shall_v noâ—_n enter_v into_o philosophical_a nicety_n but_o produce_v a_o few_o plain_a argument_n obvious_a to_o any_o clear_a and_o sound_a understanding_n as_o 1._o even_o as_o we_o do_v infer_v from_o the_o variety_n and_o nobility_n of_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o rational_a life_n and_o soul_n that_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n and_o no_o accident_n so_o both_o from_o the_o great_a variety_n and_o also_o the_o great_a nobility_n much_o great_a than_o that_o of_o the_o rational_a soul_n or_o life_n of_o its_o operation_n we_o conclude_v that_o it_o to_o wit_n the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o substance_n 2._o it_o be_v the_o root_n and_o spâ—ing_n of_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n whereby_o we_o see_v hear_v taste_n savour_n and_o feel_v spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a object_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n 3._o and_o see_v it_o be_v common_o grant_v that_o the_o life_n of_o vegetation_n the_o life_n of_o sensation_n the_o life_n of_o reason_n be_v all_o substance_n shall_v we_o deny_v that_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n or_o holiness_n which_o be_v far_o above_o all_o these_o life_n and_o do_v pass_o excel_v they_o yea_o be_v the_o very_a crown_n and_o glory_n of_o man_n be_v a_o substance_n 4._o when_o god_n make_v man_n he_o man_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n for_o it_o be_v absurd_a to_o say_v that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n or_o man_n himself_o be_v make_v according_a unto_o or_o after_o the_o pattern_n of_o a_o accident_n 5._o this_o seed_n and_o that_o by_o which_o it_o be_v nourish_v god_n give_v from_o heaven_n as_o the_o scripture_n do_v plain_o declare_v therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o accident_n it_o can_v not_o come_v from_o heaven_n because_o the_o maxim_n be_v a_o accident_n can_v pass_v from_o one_o subject_n into_o another_o 6._o it_o be_v call_v oft_o in_o scripture_n the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o flesh_n blood_n which_o the_o soul_n feed_v upon_o it_o become_v clothe_v therewith_o as_o with_o a_o body_n and_o thereby_o dwell_v in_o christ_n call_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n a_o accident_n 7._o the_o saint_n feel_v it_o in_o they_o as_o real_o to_o be_v a_o part_n or_o particle_n of_o the_o very_a substance_n of_o heaven_n viz._n of_o that_o spiritual_a and_o invisile_a heaven_n where_o the_o saint_n live_v as_o they_o do_v feel_v the_o body_n of_o their_o outward_a man_n to_o be_v a_o part_n or_o particle_n of_o the_o sustance_n of_o this_o outward_a world_n 8._o it_o receive_v the_o name_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v substance_n but_o never_o the_o name_n of_o a_o accident_n in_o scripture_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n but_o some_o may_v say_v that_o by_o this_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o we_o judge_v the_o sâ—ed_z and_o divine_a birth_n as_o we_o call_v it_o not_o only_o a_o substance_n but_o that_o it_o be_v a_o compose_a substance_n of_o body_n and_o spirit_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v yea_o it_o be_v so_o for_o its_o body_n be_v the_o vehicle_n or_o vessel_n of_o its_o spirit_n for_o as_o every_o natural_a seed_n and_o birth_n have_v its_o body_n and_o pirit_n so_o have_v this_o spiritual_a seed_n and_o it_o be_v the_o body_n that_o be_v the_o vessel_n which_o contain_v or_o convey_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o the_o seed_n of_o corn_n have_v its_o spirit_n or_o virtue_n in_o its_o body_n and_o so_o every_o other_o seed_n and_o herb_n and_o tree_n of_o the_o field_n as_o the_o appletree_n the_o vine-tree_n who_o fruit_n have_v both_o body_n and_o spirit_n as_o wine_n have_v its_o spirit_n and_o so_o any_o other_o liquor_n which_o evaporate_v or_o extract_v leave_v its_o body_n dead_a so_o this_o spiritual_a seed_n and_o vine_n have_v its_o body_n and_o spirit_n contain_v in_o it_o manifold_a most_o noble_a and_o excellent_a power_n and_o virtue_n which_o spirit_n be_v a_o measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o soul_n of_o christ_n the_o heavenly_a man._n and_o thus_o have_v get_v through_o this_o particular_a i_o pass_v unto_o another_o which_o be_v to_o show_v that_o regeneration_n be_v not_o simple_o the_o infusion_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n into_o the_o soul_n for_o indeed_o as_o it_o be_v in_o natural_a seed_n and_o birth_n so_o be_v it_o here_o in_o the_o spiritual_a now_o in_o natural_n the_o seed_n be_v not_o the_o birth_n nor_o be_v a_o thing_n say_v to_o be_v generate_v when_o its_o seed_n be_v sow_v the_o seed_n of_o a_o appletree_n be_v not_o â—he_v tree_n itself_o but_o a_o principle_n out_o of_o which_o the_o tree_n with_o its_o spirit_n life_n and_o power_n do_v spring_v and_o the_o seed_n of_o a_o man_n be_v not_o a_o man_n yea_o the_o life_n spirit_n and_o power_n or_o virtue_n of_o its_o nature_n be_v hide_v and_o as_o it_o be_v bury_v within_o the_o body_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o because_o the_o seed_n have_v not_o a_o body_n so_o large_a nor_o so_o organise_v as_o they_o require_v therefore_o they_o do_v not_o appear_v till_o it_o have_v receive_v in_o some_o measure_n a_o large_a and_o organise_v body_n and_o the_o more_o the_o body_n grow_v up_o and_o become_v organise_v its_o spirit_n life_n and_o power_n do_v manifest_v themselves_o more_o and_o more_o which_o in_o the_o seed_n lie_v as_o it_o be_v dead_a and_o bury_v and_o altogether_o unable_a to_o perform_v their_o operation_n as_o be_v confine_v as_o in_o fetter_n in_o so_o narrow_a a_o room_n yea_o further_o their_o be_v be_v so_o
little_a and_o diminutive_a that_o though_o they_o have_v room_n they_o can_v not_o perform_v the_o operation_n of_o their_o nature_n till_o by_o their_o more_o through_o generation_n and_o formation_n they_o be_v increase_v and_o augment_v and_o thus_o the_o little_a embryo_n or_o conception_n in_o the_o womb_n be_v it_o of_o man_n or_o beast_n can_v perform_v the_o operation_n of_o a_o man_n or_o beast_n nay_o though_o the_o child_n be_v bear_v and_o come_v into_o the_o world_n how_o little_a do_v the_o power_n of_o manhood_n appear_v in_o it_o but_o as_o the_o body_n of_o the_o child_n grow_v up_o the_o power_n of_o manhood_n do_v more_o and_o more_o appear_v as_o of_o understanding_n speech_n memory_n and_o the_o like_a and_o so_o it_o be_v much_o what_o in_o some_o manner_n as_o to_o the_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a seed_n or_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o receive_v it_o and_o convert_v unto_o it_o as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o permit_v to_o take_v root_n and_o plant_v itself_o in_o the_o soul_n its_o life_n and_o power_n will_v not_o be_v generate_v or_o raise_v up_o and_o so_o the_o spiritual_a generation_n of_o the_o seed_n be_v the_o raise_n up_o of_o its_o life_n and_o power_n and_o bring_v they_o into_o manifestation_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o the_o soul_n drink_v in_o it_o come_v to_o be_v regenerate_v or_o renew_v thereby_o and_o still_o more_o and_o more_o according_a to_o the_o growth_n and_o increase_n of_o the_o seed_n endue_v therewith_o now_o the_o power_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n which_o proceed_v or_o flow_v from_o its_o life_n and_o spirit_n be_v these_o noble_a and_o heroic_a christian_a virtue_n indue_a both_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n yea_o and_o all_o the_o other_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o have_v union_n with_o god_n for_o the_o divine_a birth_n with_o the_o life_n and_o power_n or_o virtue_n thereof_o be_v that_o noble_a chain_n which_o tie_v and_o join_v the_o soul_n unto_o god_n be_v of_o a_o middle_n or_o mean_a nature_n betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n and_o so_o the_o more_o apt_a for_o such_o a_o effect_n for_o as_o it_o be_v inferior_a unto_o the_o godhead_n so_o be_v be_v superior_a unto_o the_o soul_n be_v christ_n the_o image_n of_o god_n according_a to_o which_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v and_o by_o it_o ennoble_a and_o dignify_v and_o the_o excellency_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n and_o seed_n above_o the_o soul_n appear_v great_o in_o this_o that_o whereas_o the_o soul_n can_v corrupt_v and_o degenerate_a with_o all_o its_o gower_n this_o holy_a life_n can_v never_o in_o the_o least_o admit_v of_o any_o corruption_n for_o it_o ever_o abhor_v all_o sin_n it_o may_v indeed_o be_v kill_v or_o crucify_v by_o it_o but_o never_o corrupt_v and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o most_o fit_a medium_n or_o mean_v to_o unite_v the_o soul_n unto_o god_n and_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n thereof_o be_v as_o so_o many_o chain_n whereby_o the_o lord_n do_v unite_v the_o pure_a and_o righteous_a soul_n unto_o he_o you_o must_v understand_v therefore_o the_o soul_n union_n with_o god_n be_v not_o simple_o immediate_a but_o mediate_a through_o this_o seed_n for_o no_o man_n nor_o soul_n save_v jesus_n christ_n alone_o by_o his_o soul_n and_o manhood_n conceive_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o womb_n of_o the_o virgin_n purify_v only_o that_o part_n receive_v union_n with_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o with_o god_n therein_o therefore_o the_o first_o step_n and_o degree_n of_o the_o soul_n conversion_n unto_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n therein_o be_v not_o to_o speak_v proper_o union_n for_o the_o soul_n at_o its_o first_o step_n of_o conversion_n bring_v itself_o or_o convert_v unto_o god_n as_o it_o be_v viz._n all_o filthy_a and_o unclean_a with_o sin_n yea_o it_o bring_v its_o sin_n and_o sinful_a member_n unto_o god_n that_o he_o may_v kindle_v his_o fire_n in_o they_o for_o their_o destruction_n but_o there_o be_v no_o union_n until_o the_o soul_n be_v cleanse_v in_o some_o measure_n but_o when_o the_o soul_n convert_v unto_o god_n in_o that_o part_n or_o measure_n of_o it_o which_o be_v purify_v its_o conversion_n so_o far_o may_v be_v call_v and_o be_v true_o a_o union_n with_o god_n furthermore_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v that_o the_o soul_n union_n with_o god_n consist_v not_o simple_o in_o mere_a act_n as_o when_o it_o exercise_v act_n of_o conversion_n towards_o god_n these_o and_o other_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n do_v contribute_v and_o conduce_v unto_o this_o union_n and_o beget_v it_o yet_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v a_o more_o constant_a and_o permanent_a union_n with_o god_n then_o by_o act_n whether_o etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o not_o have_v true_o convert_v thereunto_o yea_o i_o will_v say_v a_o great_a word_n but_o that_o which_o be_v a_o very_a certain_a truth_n many_o do_v inward_o convert_v as_o unto_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o to_o the_o true_a god_n but_o a_o false_a even_o a_o image_n of_o their_o own_o frame_n and_o devise_v and_o as_o unto_o christ_n but_o indeed_o it_o be_v unto_o antichrist_n and_o sure_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o very_a beginning_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o iniquity_n when_o satan_n put_v on_o the_o appearance_n of_o god_n and_o seed_n sow_v in_o every_o man_n yet_o the_o usual_a knowledge_n that_o man_n common_o have_v of_o god_n do_v not_o proceed_v from_o this_o true_a idea_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n nor_o be_v it_o the_o pattern_n or_o example_n according_a to_o which_o they_o usual_o frame_v the_o thought_n and_o conception_n of_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o usual_o speak_v read_v hear_v or_o consider_v of_o in_o question_n and_o debate_v among_o people_n in_o this_o day_n but_o now_o for_o the_o further_o open_v of_o this_o particular_a i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o add_v somewhat_o more_o as_o 1._o when_o i_o say_v do_v nothing_o doubtful_o i_o do_v not_o understand_v it_o so_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o to_o do_v a_o thing_n if_o there_o be_v any_o objection_n which_o thou_o find_v arise_v objection_n although_o thou_o can_v not_o give_v they_o any_o direct_a and_o positive_a answer_n but_o this_o that_o thou_o be_v clear_a of_o the_o lord_n to_o the_o contrary_a yet_o if_o the_o objection_n shall_v so_o far_o prevail_v as_o quite_o to_o cloud_v thy_o clearness_n so_o that_o thou_o lose_v sight_n of_o it_o this_o be_v indeed_o thy_o sin_n so_o to_o have_v permit_v they_o to_o do_v yet_o till_o thou_o get_v they_o in_o some_o measure_n remove_v and_o clearness_n in_o some_o measure_n be_v give_v thou_o from_o the_o lord_n thy_o safety_n be_v to_o forbear_v again_o whereas_o some_o wrong_a spirit_n may_v take_v a_o occasion_n from_o this_o unjust_o to_o shelter_v themselves_o under_o a_o cover_n in_o their_o omission_n and_o neglect_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o the_o lord_n require_v say_v they_o find_v not_o clearness_n to_o do_v they_o therefore_o i_o must_v add_v this_o also_o that_o if_o thy_o unclearness_n proceed_v from_o a_o wrong_n and_o deceitful_a part_n of_o thy_o heart_n which_o be_v unwilling_a to_o be_v clear_v because_o it_o be_v unwilling_a to_o obey_v it_o be_v another_o case_n for_o then_o thy_o forbearance_n be_v thy_o sin_n though_o thou_o be_v unclear_a because_o thou_o may_v have_v be_v clear_a have_v thou_o stand_v single_o and_o yet_o if_o thou_o do_v thing_n in_o this_o unclearness_n thou_o sin_v also_o thou_o may_v say_v then_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v for_o this_o be_v a_o strait_a â—â—se_n i_o answer_v come_v unto_o the_o light_n and_o turn_v to_o it_o in_o singleness_n and_o that_o will_v clear_v thou_o and_o so_o thou_o be_v to_o do_v they_o v._o be_v careful_a to_o keep_v thy_o heart_n and_o mind_n in_o a_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o at_o all_o time_n as_o much_o as_o be_v possible_a i_o know_v at_o first_o and_o for_o some_o time_n it_o will_v be_v hard_a for_o thou_o yea_o at_o time_n till_o thou_o witness_v a_o further_a growth_n and_o become_v more_o inward_o acquaint_v with_o the_o enemy_n work_n thou_o will_v as_o it_o be_v lose_v much_o what_o all_o and_o clear_v and_o distinct_a sense_n feel_v and_o discern_v of_o the_o life_n as_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o thou_o but_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o fit_a of_o a_o lethargy_n a_o faint_a or_o fall_v into_o a_o swarf_n for_o even_o the_o spiritual_a life_n suffer_v these_o thing_n at_o time_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v young_a and_o tender_a no_o less_o than_o the_o natural_a but_o now_o as_o one_o live_v in_o the_o natural_a life_n do_v what_o in_o he_o lie_v to_o be_v keep_v out_o of_o such_o fit_n which_o bereave_v he_o of_o the_o present_a use_n of_o his_o natural_a sense_n and_o do_v great_o desire_v always_o to_o have_v the_o free_a and_o lively_a use_n of_o his_o natural_a sense_n which_o be_v very_o needful_a unto_o he_o for_o his_o preservation_n from_o outward_a danger_n even_o so_o one_o who_o be_v come_v to_o live_v in_o the_o spiritual_a life_n and_o have_v once_o receive_v the_o power_n of_o of_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n whereby_o to_o hear_v see_v taste_n smell_v and_o feel_v heavenly_a object_n as_o also_o to_o have_v a_o sense_n of_o what_o hurt_v from_o the_o contrary_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o he_o will_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o preserve_v the_o free_a and_o lively_a exercise_n of_o they_o for_o they_o be_v give_v unto_o he_o both_o for_o his_o comfort_n and_o also_o to_o be_v help_n unto_o he_o whereby_o he_o may_v know_v thing_n good_a and_o evil_n profitable_a and_o hurtful_a unto_o his_o spiritual_a condition_n that_o so_o he_o may_v choose_v and_o embrace_v the_o good_a and_o refuâ—e_v the_o evil_n now_o if_o he_o run_v out_o from_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n till_o he_o be_v restore_v again_o into_o the_o sense_n thereof_o he_o be_v out_o of_o any_o true_a capacity_n to_o know_v either_o the_o thing_n he_o shall_v do_v or_o the_o manner_n how_o to_o do_v they_o therefore_o it_o plain_o appear_v how_o needful_a it_o be_v unto_o a_o man_n who_o be_v come_v to_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n to_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o live_v always_o in_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o same_o and_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o this_o he_o shall_v the_o more_o ready_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o due_a and_o right_a use_n and_o observance_n of_o the_o former_a advertisement_n and_o those_o which_o yet_o remain_v to_o be_v mention_v this_o particular_a be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o doctrine_n that_o pass_v general_o among_o the_o professor_n who_o be_v teach_v to_o say_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o seek_v to_o live_v by_o sense_n but_o by_o faith_n allege_v the_o apostle_n word_n but_o this_o be_v a_o mere_a abuse_n of_o manifestation_n and_o it_o be_v true_a that_o many_o time_n the_o child_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n can_v believe_v when_o in_o some_o sort_n they_o do_v not_o see_v yet_o i_o altogether_o deny_v that_o any_o can_v believe_v without_o some_o inward_a spiritual_a sense_n or_o another_o whereby_o that_o which_o they_o shall_v believe_v be_v propose_v unto_o they_o objective_o for_o otherwise_o it_o be_v a_o groundless_a faith_n also_o by_o these_o work_n we_o walk_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n may_v be_v understand_v the_o outward_a sense_n or_o the_o inward_a which_o reside_v only_o in_o the_o low_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o natural_a and_o outward_a object_n by_o these_o we_o be_v not_o to_o walk_v nor_o expect_v to_o have_v the_o lord_n to_o propose_v himself_o unto_o we_o in_o order_n to_o satisfy_v we_o by_o our_o outward_a sense_n or_o by_o the_o inward_a sensible_a affection_n in_o the_o low_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o it_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o a_o christian_a life_n that_o give_v we_o to_o walk_v with_o god_n both_o confident_o and_o comfortable_o to_o follow_v he_o in_o the_o way_n of_o obedience_n when_o we_o have_v nothing_o from_o these_o inferior_a sense_n to_o help_v or_o encourage_v we_o but_o many_o time_n to_o the_o contrary_n and_o as_o for_o that_o which_o they_o call_v sensible_a devotion_n which_o some_o say_v we_o must_v not_o much_o seek_v after_o if_o by_o sensible_a devotion_n they_o understand_v that_o which_o only_o affect_v the_o inferior_a sensible_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n such_o as_o the_o fancy_n and_o imagination_n whereby_o the_o inferior_a affection_n of_o love_n joy_n fear_v grief_n etc._n etc._n be_v move_v and_o stir_v which_o can_v be_v doâ—e_n by_o some_o pathetic_a discourse_n or_o description_n of_o thing_n by_o a_o form_n of_o word_n i_o agree_v unto_o what_o they_o say_v but_o if_o by_o sensible_a devotion_n they_o understand_v that_o which_o move_v the_o very_a spirit_n and_o will_n of_o man_n with_o the_o supreme_a affection_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o upon_o its_o spiritual_a sense_n i_o say_v this_o devotion_n be_v most_o needful_a in_o some_o measure_n and_o be_v to_o be_v seek_v after_o by_o all_o for_o it_o be_v the_o high_a and_o noble_a kind_n of_o live_v and_o increase_v more_o and_o more_o in_o the_o holy_a life_n so_o as_o to_o grow_v up_o from_o childhood_n unto_o youth-head_n and_o from_o that_o unto_o a_o perfect_a man_n in_o christ_n jesus_n therefore_o it_o will_v be_v altogether_o fit_a and_o needful_a for_o thou_o to_o be_v often_o repeat_v these_o former_a step_n of_o conversion_n and_o persist_v therein_o in_o great_a passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n not_o only_o from_o all_o evil_a thing_n but_o even_o from_o these_o which_o be_v not_o clear_a unto_o thou_o to_o be_v good_a or_o at_o least_o harmless_a and_o innocent_a and_o as_o thou_o know_v that_o the_o several_a age_n and_o state_n of_o a_o man_n of_o infancy_n childhood_n youth-head_n and_o perfect_a manhood_n have_v their_o several_a work_n and_o exercise_n proper_a unto_o they_o beside_o what_o be_v proper_a unto_o all_o these_o four_o so_o it_o be_v much_o what_o here_o for_o indeed_o the_o spiritual_a man_n also_o have_v his_o four_o state_n as_o his_o infancy_n his_o childhood_n youth-head_n and_o perfect_a manhood_n now_o if_o thou_o be_v yet_o but_o in_o the_o infancy_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n thou_o can_v do_v but_o little_a unless_o to_o turn_v thou_o to_o thy_o mother_n breast_n which_o have_v conceive_v thou_o that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o the_o divine_a and_o holy_a life_n and_o abide_v in_o thy_o conversion_n thereunto_o drink_v in_o the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o thou_o may_v grow_v thereby_o and_o if_o thou_o be_v come_v up_o to_o a_o state_n of_o childhood_n as_o out_o of_o infancy_n yet_o thou_o can_v as_o yet_o not_o do_v many_o nor_o great_a thing_n but_o this_o be_v a_o good_a time_n for_o thou_o to_o go_v unto_o the_o school_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o learn_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n in_o his_o immediate_a teach_n so_o as_o to_o drink_v in_o a_o solid_a sound_n and_o digest_v knowledge_n of_o they_o in_o some_o measure_n before_o thou_o much_o speak_v of_o they_o to_o other_o be_v swift_a to_o hear_v but_o slow_a to_o speak_v but_o if_o thou_o be_v come_v up_o to_o the_o state_n of_o a_o young_a man_n yet_o thou_o can_v not_o do_v all_o those_o thing_n which_o a_o man_n of_o perfect_a age_n can_v neither_o be_v it_o give_v nor_o require_v of_o thou_o vii_o be_v very_o mindful_a to_o regard_v thy_o own_o measure_n of_o life_n so_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o draw_v forth_o or_o lift_v up_o to_o do_v great_a thing_n or_o any_o thing_n in_o a_o great_a or_o high_a strain_n than_o thy_o present_a ability_n of_o life_n permit_v for_o if_o thou_o bend_v or_o screw_v or_o wind_v up_o the_o power_n of_o thy_o soul_n too_o high_a above_o thy_o measure_n yea_o if_o in_o any_o thing_n above_o it_o it_o will_v much_o mar_v and_o spoil_v the_o work_n that_o thou_o be_v about_o and_o displease_v the_o lord_n and_o grieve_v his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o life_n even_o as_o the_o wind_a of_o some_o string_n or_o string_n on_o a_o musical_a instrument_n above_o what_o may_v keep_v in_o true_a concord_n with_o other_o string_n do_v quite_o spoil_v the_o harmony_n and_o render_v it_o ungrateful_a unto_o discern_a ear_n yea_o many_o hereby_o have_v suffer_v great_a loss_n and_o bring_v many_o grievous_a burden_n upon_o that_o holy_a life_n and_o also_o upon_o their_o own_o soul_n in_o so_o do_v and_o let_v not_o the_o great_a measure_n of_o another_o be_v a_o occasion_n to_o draw_v thou_o forth_o from_o thy_o own_o as_o seek_v to_o do_v thing_n equal_o with_o he_o or_o to_o go_v beyond_o he_o also_o to_o mind_n and_o reflect_v by_o a_o inward_a observation_n when_o the_o life_n or_o power_n thereof_o begin_v to_o cease_v or_o shut_v up_o that_o so_o thou_o may_v therein_o also_o follow_v they_o so_o as_o to_o cease_v at_o their_o cease_n to_o be_v shut_v up_o with_o they_o and_o open_v with_o they_o and_o keep_v time_n and_o measure_n and_o touch_n with_o they_o that_o thou_o may_v not_o be_v leave_v do_v alone_o for_o if_o so_o thou_o be_v not_o do_v the_o lords_n work_n but_o thy_o own_o viii_o thou_o be_v to_o learn_v to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o power_n give_v thou_o from_o the_o holy_a life_n to_o do_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o that_o power_n for_o though_o the_o power_n may_v be_v say_v after_o a_o sort_n always_o to_o remain_v with_o thou_o while_o the_o life_n itself_o remain_v yet_o thou_o have_v not_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o power_n at_o thy_o will_n and_o dispose_v and_o so_o thou_o may_v observe_v a_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o thy_o exercise_v thy_o natural_a power_n and_o these_o spiritual_a for_o the_o natural_a thou_o can_v use_v when_o thou_o wilt_v as_o to_o speak_v write_v sing_v natural_o etc._n etc._n but_o thou_o can_v not_o use_v the_o spiritual_a power_n though_o they_o be_v in_o thou_o in_o thy_o own_o will_n therefore_o thou_o be_v to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v give_v thou_o the_o use_n of_o they_o by_o the_o new_a and_o actual_a influence_n of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o they_o which_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o key_n which_o open_v they_o otherwise_o they_o be_v shut_v up_o and_o lock_v ix_o and_o last_o watch_v against_o the_o enemy_n who_o lie_v near_o thou_o in_o all_o thy_o work_n one_o way_n or_o other_o to_o mar_v they_o for_o indeed_o so_o long_o as_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n live_v in_o thou_o in_o any_o measure_n so_o far_o have_v satan_n a_o place_n in_o thou_o for_o this_o body_n with_o its_o member_n and_o power_n of_o its_o unholy_a life_n be_v the_o very_a kingdom_n and_o throne_n of_o satan_n in_o which_o he_o live_v and_o rule_n after_o a_o sort_n as_o the_o lord_n do_v in_o his_o kingdom_n which_o be_v the_o heavenly_a body_n and_o birth_n with_o the_o member_n and_o power_n thereof_o and_o as_o the_o lord_n do_v work_v mighty_o in_o his_o own_o kingdom_n and_o place_n which_o he_o have_v gain_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o strong_o move_v the_o soul_n with_o its_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperate_v with_o he_o so_o the_o enemy_n work_v strong_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o also_o move_v the_o soul_n with_o its_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperat_a with_o he_o and_o thus_o the_o poor_a soul_n be_v set_v as_o betwixt_o two_o contrary_a stream_n the_o one_o seek_v to_o carry_v it_o one_o way_n and_o the_o other_o to_o carry_v it_o to_o the_o contrary_a and_o on_o this_o account_v it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n sometime_o obey_v the_o one_o and_o sometime_o the_o other_o sometime_o it_o be_v carry_v forward_o and_o sometime_o backward_o yea_o and_o sometime_o it_o do_v the_o lord_n work_n and_o sometime_o the_o work_n of_o the_o enemy_n and_o at_o other_o time_n the_o work_n which_o it_o do_v be_v so_o to_o speak_v mix_v or_o stand_v in_o a_o mixture_n so_o that_o one_o part_n of_o its_o work_n may_v be_v of_o and_o in_o the_o lord_n and_o do_v in_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n and_o
the_o other_o part_n may_v be_v of_o the_o enemy_n yea_o the_o soul_n may_v begin_v to_o do_v something_o well_o and_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o end_v it_o in_o the_o flesh_n through_o its_o weakness_n and_o inadvertency_n nevertheless_o we_o must_v not_o conceive_v any_o such_o mixture_n possible_a as_o if_o what_o the_o lord_n do_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o what_o the_o soul_n do_v with_o he_o and_o by_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n can_v be_v corrupt_v and_o defile_v by_o the_o enemy_n nay_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v still_o pure_a so_o far_o as_o it_o go_v but_o now_o the_o soul_n give_v way_n to_o the_o enemy_n he_o enter_v and_o so_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o the_o lord_n work_n at_o that_o time_n but_o he_o can_v never_o defile_v or_o corrupt_v it_o and_o thus_o the_o lord_n part_n of_o the_o work_n be_v still_o his_o and_o the_o enemy_n have_v no_o share_n in_o it_o nor_o any_o influence_n upon_o it_o so_o as_o to_o defile_v it_o but_o he_o may_v stop_v it_o as_o the_o lord_n permit_v he_o and_o as_o the_o soul_n give_v he_o way_n so_o to_o do_v now_o one_o may_v ready_o object_n according_a to_o this_o it_o will_v seem_v that_o so_o long_o as_o sin_n have_v any_o life_n or_o power_n in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v as_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n kingdom_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o it_o to_o do_v any_o work_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o he_o from_o fiâ—st_n to_o last_o but_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v mar_v and_o stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o the_o very_a state_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o partly_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n have_v place_n therein_o and_o partly_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o that_o the_o work_n itself_o shall_v stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n also_o and_o that_o proportional_o according_a to_o the_o mixture_n of_o the_o soul_n own_o state_n and_o condition_n for_o while_o the_o soul_n be_v work_v that_o which_o be_v good_a by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n in_o and_o with_o the_o lord_n will_v the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n be_v idle_a and_o asleep_a or_o rather_o will_v they_o not_o work_v in_o opposition_n yea_o will_v not_o the_o devil_n move_v strong_o in_o they_o to_o resist_v and_o mar_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n answ._n this_o objection_n indeed_o do_v evince_n that_o the_o thing_n be_v somewhat_o difficult_a but_o not_o impossible_a it_o be_v true_a the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n do_v of_o their_o own_o nature_n incline_v to_o work_v in_o opposition_n to_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o satan_n will_v never_o be_v want_v as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v to_o move_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o but_o this_o answer_n it_o plain_o that_o as_o the_o soul_n turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o breath_n unto_o he_o through_o the_o power_n of_o his_o own_o life_n and_o spirit_n for_o preservation_n and_o continue_v thus_o inward_o turn_v and_o convert_v unto_o he_o in_o fear_n watchfulness_n and_o singleness_n the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n come_v over_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n yea_o and_o over_o the_o whole_a power_n of_o the_o enemy_n therein_o and_o do_v bind_v and_o captivate_v they_o that_o they_o can_v no_o more_o prevail_v to_o hinder_v the_o soul_n from_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o purity_n and_o perfection_n in_o a_o measure_n then_o if_o they_o have_v no_o such_o place_n in_o it_o even_o as_o in_o the_o outward_a if_o i_o be_v do_v a_o piece_n of_o work_n and_o some_o strong_a body_a man_n have_v a_o resolution_n to_o stop_v or_o mar_v i_o yet_o if_o a_o strong_a than_o he_o come_v and_o bind_v he_o up_o i_o may_v do_v the_o work_v complete_o maugre_o he_o he_o may_v fret_v and_o make_v a_o noise_n like_o a_o mad_a dog_n or_o lion_n upon_o a_o chain_n but_o he_o can_v do_v no_o more_o and_o true_o we_o have_v find_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o many_o time_n in_o our_o own_o experience_n that_o as_o we_o have_v keep_v diligent_a nigh_o unto_o the_o lord_n with_o our_o mind_n towards_o he_o in_o tender_a breathe_n and_o desire_n that_o we_o may_v be_v preserve_v we_o have_v find_v he_o chain_v as_o aforesaid_a but_o when_o we_o have_v but_o a_o little_a become_v remiss_a and_o suffer_v our_o mind_n to_o slide_v back_o from_o that_o diligence_n and_o watchfulness_n as_o be_v requisite_a than_o the_o lord_n suffer_v the_o enemy_n somewhat_o as_o it_o be_v to_o break_v loose_a upon_o we_o and_o use_v his_o strength_n in_o some_o measure_n against_o we_o to_o the_o end_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v stir_v up_o unto_o the_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o indeed_o many_o time_n we_o find_v it_o so_o with_o we_o in_o this_o matter_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o jew_n at_o the_o rebuild_n of_o the_o city_n who_o be_v so_o put_v to_o it_o that_o while_o they_o build_v with_o the_o one_o hand_n they_o behoove_v to_o fight_v against_o the_o adversary_n with_o the_o other_o thus_o you_o may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o time_n wherein_o sin_n and_o its_o power_n may_v be_v captivate_v before_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v and_o the_o strong_a man_n may_v be_v bind_v before_o he_o be_v utter_o cast_v out_o chap._n ix_o show_v how_o that_o though_o work_n can_v have_v no_o great_a influence_n upon_o the_o very_a first_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n that_o be_v only_o receive_v through_o a_o receptive_a faith_n yet_o they_o do_v great_o conduce_v unto_o the_o growth_n and_o continuance_n thereof_o also_o unto_o the_o kill_n and_o mortification_n of_o the_o sinful_a and_o unholy_a life_n with_o its_o power_n more_o and_o more_o till_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v where_o also_o the_o distinction_n of_o a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n viz._n receptive_a and_o operative_a be_v somewhat_o open_v work_v out_o your_o salvation_n say_v the_o apostle_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a it_o be_v observable_a he_o do_v not_o bid_v they_o begin_v their_o salvation_n with_o work_n but_o that_o they_o shall_v work_v it_o out_o or_o proceed_v in_o it_o through_o work_n which_o be_v a_o manifest_a proof_n that_o work_n have_v a_o great_a use_n and_o service_n promote_a and_o carry_v on_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n though_o they_o can_v begin_v it_o and_o concern_v the_o great_a use_n they_o have_v unto_o this_o effect_n paul_n the_o same_o apostle_n say_v again_o rom._n 8._o if_o you_o live_v after_o the_o flâ—sh_n you_o shall_v die_v but_o if_o you_o through_o the_o spirit_n do_v mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n you_o shall_v live_v wherein_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v plain_o imply_v 1._o that_o carnal_a and_o evil_a work_n that_o be_v a_o live_n after_o the_o flesh_n occasion_n death_n upon_o they_o who_o be_v come_v to_o some_o measure_n of_o spiritual_a life_n evil_a and_o unholy_a work_n be_v deadn_v and_o kill_v they_o be_v like_o a_o canker_n which_o eat_v out_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n 2._o that_o good_a and_o holy_a work_n serve_v not_o only_o to_o preserve_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n already_o attain_v but_o to_o increase_v and_o improve_v it_o and_o this_o same_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n do_v plain_o hold_v forth_o for_o he_o who_o receive_v but_o two_o talent_n yet_o improve_n the_o same_o and_o put_v they_o to_o use_v they_o become_v multiply_v into_o four_o so_o he_o who_o receive_v the_o five_o by_o use_v they_o gain_v other_o five_o many_o other_o scripture_n exaâ—mples_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o prove_v the_o trâ—â—â—_n of_o it_o but_o these_o shall_v at_o present_a suffice_v moreover_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o the_o thing_n do_v also_o demonstrate_v it_o for_o it_o be_v here_o the_o same_o as_o to_o the_o spiritual_a life_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a for_o the_o natural_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o become_v strong_a and_o strong_a the_o more_o it_o be_v upon_o motion_n and_o exercise_n as_o we_o see_v by_o daily_a experience_n but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o the_o natural_a life_n after_o it_o have_v come_v to_o its_o height_n do_v decay_n and_o even_o spend_v or_o consume_v itself_o in_o its_o motion_n or_o work_n for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temporary_a thing_n whereas_o the_o spiritual_a life_n be_v eternal_a and_o do_v never_o at_o any_o time_n decay_n or_o diminish_v through_o its_o work_n but_o be_v thereby_o perpetuate_v it_o be_v such_o a_o good_a plant_n that_o it_o ever_o grow_v and_o flourish_v and_o bring_v forth_o twelve_o manner_n of_o fruit_n every_o month_n where_o it_o be_v well_o occupy_v or_o improve_v and_o never_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n decay_v or_o wax_v barren_a
suffering_n as_o in_o a_o wine-press_n to_o the_o end_n that_o sweet_a wine_n may_v come_v forth_o that_o have_v the_o virtue_n in_o it_o to_o cure_v man_n of_o their_o wound_n both_o in_o relation_n to_o wrath_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o cry_v forth_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n upon_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n even_o therein_o and_o there_o through_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a breath_n or_o spirit_n which_o have_v and_o have_v a_o most_o effectual_a influence_n upon_o both_o man_n and_o the_o creation_n for_o their_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o nothing_o that_o he_o ever_o do_v or_o suffer_v be_v in_o vain_a or_o without_o virtue_n and_o influence_n unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o thus_o have_v declare_v the_o great_a influence_n which_o great_a help_n and_o furtherance_n to_o attain_v unto_o it_o and_o let_v none_o strain_v or_o use_v any_o violence_n or_o force_n to_o nature_n to_o compass_v it_o for_o no_o mâ—n_z of_o himself_o can_v attain_v unto_o it_o but_o as_o he_o be_v assist_v and_o enable_v of_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v near_o at_o

ordinary_a way_n of_o work_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n not_o find_v or_o beget_v in_o a_o instant_n but_o raise_v up_o by_o degree_n from_o the_o divine_a seed_n the_o formation_n of_o which_o as_o it_o require_v the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a concurrence_n of_o god_n as_o a_o father_n and_o as_o the_o principal_a cause_n and_o worker_n so_o do_v it_o also_o require_v the_o dwell_v and_o tabernacle_v therein_o and_o there_o through_o conveigh_v the_o manifestation_n of_o it_o unto_o the_o soul_n fourteen_o now_o a_o man_n regeneration_n be_v not_o simple_o the_o have_v this_o divine_a image_n raise_v and_o form_v in_o he_o but_o it_o be_v somewhat_o consequential_a thereunto_o for_o it_o be_v by_o this_o image_n through_o the_o mighty_a operation_n of_o god_n own_o essence_n so_o that_o it_o be_v the_o same_o cloth_n still_o only_o have_v another_o die_n and_o colour_n from_o the_o tincture_n which_o it_o have_v drink_v in_o and_o substantial_o get_v it_o incorporate_v in_o itself_o xv._n but_o before_o this_o divine_a image_n can_v be_v form_v in_o the_o soul_n or_o that_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v tincture_v or_o leaven_v therewith_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v cleanse_v and_o purify_v from_o the_o pollution_n and_o defilement_n it_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o contrary_a image_n which_o be_v that_o of_o the_o serpent_n even_o as_o according_a to_o the_o former_a example_n before_o the_o cloth_n can_v receive_v the_o die_n it_o must_v be_v wash_v and_o make_v clean_o also_o the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o devil_n be_v of_o so_o which_o they_o have_v put_v both_o upon_o his_o outward_a come_n and_o the_o benefit_n thereof_o while_o they_o do_v both_o grievous_o misunderstand_v and_o misapply_v the_o end_n of_o his_o come_n for_o whereas_o the_o main_a and_o principle_n end_v of_o his_o come_n be_v to_o reconcile_v man_n unto_o god_n and_o make_v peace_n betwixt_o they_o through_o his_o purge_v their_o conscience_n from_o dead_a work_n take_v away_o the_o sin_n and_o pollution_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o deface_v and_o blot_v out_o that_o unholy_a image_n of_o satan_n beget_v in_o they_o through_o unrighteousness_n and_o indue_a they_o with_o the_o heavenly_a and_o righteous_a image_n of_o god_n they_o on_o the_o contrary_n have_v suppose_v or_o dream_v that_o his_o end_n in_o come_v be_v to_o reconcile_v they_o to_o god_n and_o justify_v they_o while_o remain_v in_o their_o sin_n yea_o and_o so_o far_o they_o have_v proceed_v herein_o as_o to_o imagine_v that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o holiness_n at_o all_o for_o justification_n and_o reconciliation_n but_o only_o for_o make_v they_o meet_v for_o heaven_n as_o they_o term_v it_o whereby_o it_o will_v seem_v they_o suppose_v that_o whereas_o heaven_n can_v be_v at_o no_o peace_n with_o unholy_a man_n yet_o god_n can_v as_o if_o god_n be_v more_o reconcileable_a with_o iniquity_n than_o heaven_n be_v but_o sure_o neither_o heaven_n nor_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n much_o less_o can_v ever_o be_v reconcile_v or_o at_o peace_n with_o unholiness_n or_o those_o who_o live_v in_o it_o now_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o their_o supposition_n be_v a_o unfound_a â—otion_n they_o have_v drunken_a in_o that_o christ_n be_v come_v or_o put_v in_o their_o stead_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n for_o they_o in_o his_o own_o person_n both_o active_o and_o passive_o by_o which_o they_o be_v whole_o justify_v â—n_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n through_o his_o satisfaction_n though_o they_o remain_v in_o much_o sinfulness_n and_o unholiness_n in_o their_o own_o particular_a but_o though_o we_o do_v true_o acknowledge_v the_o full_a and_o perfect_a satisfaction_n of_o christ_n unto_o the_o father_n both_o in_o his_o do_n and_o suffering_n yet_o we_o deny_v that_o notion_n of_o it_o as_o unsound_a and_o unscriptural_a for_o the_o true_a sense_n of_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n both_o as_o we_o read_v it_o outward_o in_o the_o scripture_n testimony_n and_o feel_v and_o know_v it_o inward_o in_o the_o work_n and_o testimony_n of_o his_o spirit_n light_n and_o life_n in_o our_o heart_n be_v after_o and_o according_a to_o the_o manner_n as_o follow_v i._o when_o man_n sin_v against_o god_n and_o become_v corrupt_a and_o unclean_a in_o his_o heart_n before_o he_o through_o transgession_n the_o peace_n betwixt_o god_n and_o he_o be_v break_v and_o so_o man_n who_o in_o his_o innocent_a state_n be_v justify_v and_o at_o peace_n with_o god_n now_o through_o his_o sin_n become_v unjustified_a and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n kindle_v against_o he_o both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n in_o great_a measure_n ii_o this_o wrath_n of_o god_n will_v have_v burn_v in_o such_o a_o violent_a and_o forcible_a manner_n have_v not_o he_o provide_v a_o way_n in_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o abate_v and_o qualify_v it_o that_o it_o will_v have_v sink_v man_n into_o endless_a and_o irrecoverable_a torment_n and_o misery_n but_o god_n prepare_v a_o way_n both_o to_o qualify_v this_o wrath_n and_o also_o in_o due_a time_n whole_o to_o quench_v it_o and_o bring_v man_n into_o perfect_a peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n as_o at_o the_o beginning_n yea_o and_o to_o establish_v he_o therein_o for_o ever_o iii_o now_o the_o way_n and_o remedy_n he_o provide_v both_o for_o the_o qualify_a it_o at_o first_o and_o afterward_o for_o the_o total_a quench_n of_o it_o be_v the_o come_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n his_o only_o beget_v son_n in_o a_o holy_a seed_n conception_n and_o birth_n out_o of_o which_o shall_v spring_v such_o a_o gentle_a meek_a and_o qualify_a spirit_n and_o life_n that_o it_o shall_v stand_v up_o in_o the_o way_n betwixt_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o man_n first_o to_o abate_v and_o qualify_v the_o wrath_n towards_o man_n even_o while_o they_o be_v in_o their_o sin_n but_o not_o to_o remove_v it_o and_o that_o for_o a_o certain_a time_n or_o day_n of_o visitation_n give_v they_o of_o god_n to_o repent_v and_o come_v out_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o sinful_a nature_n and_o spirit_n into_o holiness_n and_o the_o nature_n and_o 〈◊〉_d thereof_o and_o then_o quite_o to_o remove_v and_o quench_v it_o at_o their_o be_v make_v free_a from_o sin_n anâ—_n perfect_v in_o holiness_n and_o true_o this_o great_a and_o unspeakable_a benefit_n from_o christ_n have_v all_o unholy_a man_n in_o the_o day_n of_o their_o visitation_n that_o through_o his_o sweet_a and_o quallify_a life_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n bear_v up_o from_o fall_v upon_o they_o to_o the_o uttermost_a which_o if_o it_o do_v will_v instant_o sink_v they_o into_o the_o pit_n from_o whence_o there_o be_v no_o recovery_n nevertheless_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n abide_v upon_o all_o unholy_a man_n but_o through_o the_o meek_a life_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n it_o be_v great_o suspend_v or_o bear_v off_o iv._o now_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n may_v be_v the_o more_o universal_o and_o thorough_o a_o saviour_n unto_o man_n for_o his_o recovery_n out_o of_o the_o misery_n and_o bondage_n and_o vanity_n into_o which_o he_o have_v throw_v himself_o it_o please_v the_o father_n yea_o and_o the_o son_n both_o that_o he_o shall_v come_v to_o wit_n christ_n in_o a_o holy_a seed_n both_o inward_o and_o outward_o for_o the_o deliverance_n of_o both_o the_o inward_a and_o outward_a man_n yea_o and_o for_o the_o deliverance_n of_o the_o whole_a outward_a creation_n from_o the_o vanity_n and_o corruption_n it_o be_v make_v subject_a unto_o through_o the_o sin_n of_o man._n and_o thus_o even_o from_o the_o beginning_n yea_o upon_o man_n fall_n god_n be_v in_o christ_n reconcile_n the_o world_n to_o himself_o and_o christ_n be_v manifest_a in_o the_o holy_a seed_n inward_o and_o so_o stand_v in_o the_o way_n to_o ward_v off_o the_o wrath_n from_o the_o sinner_n and_o unholy_a that_o it_o may_v not_o come_v upon_o they_o to_o the_o uttermost_a during_o the_o day_n of_o their_o visitation_n for_o even_o at_o man_n fall_n the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n be_v give_v not_o only_o to_o bruise_v the_o serpent_n head_n but_o also_o to_o be_v a_o lamb_n or_o sacrifice_n to_o atone_v and_o pacify_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n towards_o man_n and_o this_o be_v the_o lamb_n that_o be_v slay_v from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n v._o and_o through_o the_o come_n of_o jesus_n christ_n thus_o in_o the_o inward_a even_o before_o he_o be_v outward_o come_v or_o manifest_v many_o be_v save_v and_o attain_v unto_o perfect_a peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n in_o their_o soul_n yet_o not_o in_o unholiness_n but_o in_o depart_v therefrom_o and_o become_v holy_a and_o sanctify_a unto_o god_n now_o though_o from_o the_o beginning_n he_o be_v not_o outward_o come_v nevertheless_o his_o purpose_n of_o come_v outward_o be_v from_o the_o beginning_n and_o also_o he_o have_v a_o certain_a foreknowledge_n and_o sense_n of_o what_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v and_o how_o he_o be_v to_o be_v deliver_v up_o
perfect_o cure_v and_o restore_v the_o sick_a and_o disease_a body_n of_o nature_n either_o in_o man_n or_o other_o thing_n but_o his_o incorruptible_a body_n through_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o dwell_v in_o it_o who_o say_v behold_v i_o make_v all_o thing_n new_a and_o for_o who_o come_v to_o renew_v they_o all_o the_o creation_n be_v invite_v to_o rejoice_v because_o of_o their_o be_v to_o be_v deliver_v through_o the_o same_o from_o their_o bondage_n and_o vanity_n yet_o i_o shall_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o it_o may_v be_v possible_a for_o man_n through_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n to_o find_v out_o such_o a_o substance_n as_o may_v do_v great_a cure_n on_o the_o body_n of_o nature_n but_o i_o say_v it_o can_v never_o perfect_o cure_v it_o otherwise_o the_o body_n shall_v become_v immortal_a which_o never_o shall_v be_v through_o the_o virtue_n of_o any_o other_o body_n but_o that_o of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o be_v say_v and_o though_o such_o a_o substance_n have_v be_v find_v or_o may_v be_v as_o suppose_v it_o which_o can_v turn_v the_o other_o metal_n into_o gold_n yet_o this_o be_v not_o the_o universal_a balâ—om_n or_o stone_n for_o even_o the_o pure_a gold_n on_o earth_n have_v its_o corruption_n and_o distemper_n from_o which_o when_o it_o be_v refine_v it_o will_v more_o excel_v what_o it_o be_v now_o than_o it_o at_o present_a do_v excel_v the_o base_a metal_n stone_n or_o sand_n or_o turf_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o this_o excellent_a body_n or_o birth_n of_o jesus_n christ_n may_v be_v the_o more_o prepare_v forsuch_o a_o effect_n viz._n to_o cure_v and_o restore_v all_o thing_n therefore_o it_o please_v the_o father_n to_o give_v he_o up_o both_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o suffer_v such_o deep_a inward_a affliction_n suffering_n and_o trial_n for_o by_o these_o that_o hide_a divine_a virtue_n and_o perfection_n which_o be_v in_o the_o centre_n both_o of_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n be_v raise_v up_o and_o bring_v forth_o as_o into_o the_o circumference_n even_o unto_o its_o fullness_n and_o perfection_n according_a to_o which_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o he_o the_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n be_v make_v perfect_a through_o suffering_n for_o so_o it_o be_v indeed_o as_o to_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o have_v any_o perfection_n or_o virtue_n further_o in_o they_o than_o be_v manifest_a as_o it_o be_v hide_v in_o the_o centre_n which_o perfection_n be_v raise_v up_o and_o bring_v into_o view_n or_o manifestation_n through_o its_o suffering_n as_o by_o mortification_n calcination_n melt_v it_o in_o the_o fire_n heat_n it_o pound_v and_o press_v it_o bruise_v and_o squeeze_v boil_a and_o many_o such_o kind_n of_o thing_n well_o know_v to_o chemist_n and_o physician_n and_o thus_o be_v our_o bless_a lord_n use_v both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n his_o deep_a sufring_n in_o both_o be_v like_o a_o wine-press_n which_o serve_v to_o squeeze_v and_o press_v out_o the_o hide_a wine_n that_o be_v in_o his_o grape_n even_o that_o pure_a and_o precious_a water_n and_o blood_n which_o come_v out_o at_o his_o side_n on_o the_o cross_n and_o when_o in_o the_o garden_n he_o sweat_v that_o drop_n of_o blood_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n these_o very_a drop_n of_o water_n and_o blood_n have_v a_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n in_o they_o beyond_o what_o man_n heart_n be_v able_a to_o conceive_v of_o whereby_o they_o enter_v into_o the_o very_a kernel_n and_o quintessence_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n to_o its_o very_a heart_n for_o its_o deliverance_n and_o restauration_n and_o this_o be_v as_o a_o seed_n that_o be_v then_o sow_v in_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o the_o outward_a nature_n by_o which_o it_o be_v bless_v of_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n and_o through_o which_o it_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n be_v perfect_o deliver_v and_o cure_v of_o its_o vanity_n corruption_n and_o bondage_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o at_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n the_o whole_a outward_a creation_n fall_v into_o a_o wonderful_a passion_n and_o suffering_n in_o so_o much_o that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a darkness_n over_o all_o and_o the_o very_a earth_n be_v as_o it_o be_v rent_n for_o that_o secret_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n which_o go_v forth_o from_o he_o at_o his_o suffering_n even_o in_o the_o water_n and_o the_o blood_n pierce_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o body_n of_o the_o world_n and_o wrought_v in_o it_o like_o physic_n that_o work_v strong_o against_o the_o corrupt_a humour_n in_o man_n body_n that_o do_v great_o affect_v the_o body_n with_o suffering_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v even_o fit_a that_o the_o creation_n shall_v after_o its_o manner_n suffer_v with_o he_o which_o be_v to_o partake_v of_o such_o glorious_a effect_n through_o his_o suffering_n and_o though_o the_o outward_a creation_n be_v not_o yet_o cure_v through_o the_o secret_a virtue_n of_o that_o water_n and_o blood_n no_o nor_o yet_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n they_o shall_v even_o through_o and_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o these_o suffering_n but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v above_o so_o do_v i_o again_o repeat_v it_o that_o it_o may_v have_v the_o more_o weight_n viz._n that_o we_o be_v not_o too_o nice_o to_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o influence_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o outward_a and_o inward_a suffering_n but_o to_o understand_v they_o in_o a_o perfect_a conjunction_n and_o that_o the_o end_n of_o his_o suffer_v in_o both_o be_v this_o viz._n 1._o both_o to_o quench_v and_o allay_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o be_v kindle_v both_o in_o man_n soul_n and_o body_n and_o also_o in_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o 2._o to_o purify_v and_o cure_v both_o man_n and_o also_o the_o outward_a creation_n from_o corruption_n vanity_n and_o bondage_n and_o so_o in_o relation_n to_o man_n this_o i_o say_v that_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o obedience_n life_n and_o righteousness_n both_o inward_o and_o outward_o have_v a_o very_a bless_a influence_n upon_o man_n both_o to_o remove_v the_o wrath_n and_o also_o to_o remove_v sin_n the_o cause_n of_o it_o and_o to_o bring_v in_o everlasting_a righteousness_n to_o cover_v the_o soul_n with_o by_o a_o real_a participation_n of_o it_o over_z and_o beyond_o all_o imaginary_a reckon_n and_o imputation_n of_o man_n though_o the_o imputation_n of_o god_n unto_o man_n â—we_v own_o and_o this_o i_o say_v further_o that_o the_o wrath_n be_v no_o further_o remove_v from_o man_n by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n obedience_n and_o suffering_n than_o sin_n that_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o be_v remove_v and_o thus_o justification_n and_o mortification_n and_o sanctification_n go_v on_o equal_o and_o by_o what_o be_v say_v way_n be_v also_o make_v for_o clear_v of_o that_o concern_v christ_n his_o bear_v the_o wrath_n and_o anger_n of_o god_n for_o we_o to_o which_o i_o say_v he_o do_v so_o bear_v it_o indeed_o that_o he_o bear_v it_o up_o from_o fall_v upon_o we_o in_o its_o full_a weight_n which_o if_o it_o have_v do_v it_o will_v have_v sink_v we_o into_o a_o eternal_a state_n of_o misery_n and_o he_o stand_v in_o the_o way_n and_o bear_v it_o off_o that_o it_o do_v not_o drown_v and_o consume_v we_o with_o everlasting_a death_n and_o destruction_n but_o that_o he_o do_v bear_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n either_o in_o that_o manner_n or_o measure_n which_o the_o damn_a in_o hell_n do_v or_o we_o shall_v have_v do_v have_v not_o the_o lord_n recover_v we_o i_o altogether_o deny_v for_o he_o can_v and_o do_v satisfy_v the_o father_n well_o and_o acceptable_o without_o bear_v it_o in_o that_o way_n but_o if_o it_o be_v query_v if_o he_o suffer_v by_o that_o wrath_n when_o he_o stand_v betwixt_o we_o and_o it_o i_o answer_v he_o suffer_v a_o trial_n and_o chastisement_n by_o it_o and_o so_o it_o be_v call_v a_o chastisement_n but_o it_o can_v never_o be_v say_v that_o the_o father_n be_v offend_v or_o displease_v with_o he_o even_o while_o he_o suffer_v for_o we_o for_o the_o father_n be_v satisfy_v and_o well_o please_v in_o he_o in_o his_o great_a suffering_n which_o he_o do_v bear_v in_o most_o perfect_a resignation_n love_n and_o willingness_n both_o to_o please_v his_o father_n and_o also_o to_o save_v and_o reconcile_v man_n unto_o god_n and_o though_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o withdraw_v that_o sensible_a comfort_n from_o he_o when_o he_o suffer_v on_o the_o cross_n it_o be_v not_o for_o any_o displeasure_n towards_o he_o but_o for_o a_o trial_n and_o as_o be_v say_v to_o raise_v up_o and_o draw_v forth_o that_o excellent_a virtue_n and_o perfection_n that_o be_v in_o he_o the_o more_o so_o it_o please_v the_o father_n to_o bruise_v he_o and_o press_v he_o with_o
life_n through_o the_o burden_n and_o weight_n of_o man_n iniquity_n but_o how_o christ_n do_v suffer_v under_o the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o can_v never_o be_v understand_v in_o any_o true_a measure_n but_o by_o these_o alone_o who_o be_v come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o a_o measure_n of_o his_o righteous_a life_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o to_o know_v a_o measure_n of_o redemption_n from_o sin_n thereby_o such_o will_v feel_v how_o that_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n jesus_n suffer_v by_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o so_o that_o many_o time_n we_o have_v feel_v the_o life_n of_o he_o in_o we_o to_o be_v deep_o smite_v and_o wound_v and_o deep_o to_o suffer_v through_o and_o by_o iniquity_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o it_o even_o in_o other_o and_o in_o a_o whole_a country_n and_o nation_n yea_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o the_o whole_a world_n the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v because_o of_o that_o deep_a and_o near_a sympathy_n that_o his_o life_n in_o the_o saint_n have_v with_o the_o seed_n of_o that_o life_n that_o be_v oppress_v in_o other_o till_o it_o be_v raise_v so_o that_o many_o in_o who_o this_o righteous_a life_n be_v raise_v to_o reign_v in_o perfect_a dominion_n over_o all_o its_o contrary_a in_o their_o own_o particular_n yet_o witness_v many_o time_n its_o deep_a suffering_n through_o its_o sympathy_n with_o that_o seed_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n oppress_v and_o murder_v in_o other_o so_o that_o indeed_o upon_o the_o matter_n this_o righteous_a life_n in_o none_o of_o the_o saint_n will_v be_v whole_o deliver_v from_o its_o suffering_n till_o that_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n over_o all_o the_o world_n be_v raise_v up_o in_o all_o heart_n to_o reign_v with_o it_o in_o dominion_n either_o in_o full_a love_n or_o wrath_n and_o true_o these_o deep_a suffering_n of_o christ_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o man_n iniquity_n real_o feel_v and_o witness_v by_o he_o as_o in_o the_o garden_n and_o on_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n i_o find_v the_o professor_n know_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o for_o they_o conceive_v not_o that_o christ_n suffer_v any_o other_o way_n by_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n lay_v on_o he_o then_o in_o that_o he_o suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v due_a to_o man_n for_o sin_n and_o so_o they_o understand_v his_o bear_v our_o sin_n to_o be_v only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o do_v bear_v which_o be_v not_o so_o for_o he_o suffer_v much_o more_o deep_o by_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o because_o of_o that_o great_a and_o implacable_a contrariety_n and_o enmity_n which_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o have_v against_o his_o tender_a life_n which_o at_o that_o time_n have_v muster_v up_o all_o its_o force_n against_o he_o the_o lord_n permit_v it_o so_o to_o be_v that_o by_o his_o patient_a and_o meek_a suffering_n he_o may_v overcome_v it_o as_o indeed_o he_o do_v and_o even_o upon_o the_o cross_n triumph_v over_o it_o and_o give_v the_o spirit_n of_o transgression_n the_o great_a blow_n and_o wound_n that_o ever_o it_o get_v which_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n by_o the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o his_o suffering_n be_v utter_o slay_v and_o extinguish_v in_o the_o earth_n and_o it_o fill_v with_o his_o holy_a and_o righteous_a spirit_n and_o this_o spirit_n of_o iniquity_n wrought_v what_o it_o can_v so_o to_o eclipse_n and_o vail_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n from_o his_o righteous_a soul_n as_o to_o take_v away_o that_o comfort_n and_o joy_n from_o he_o which_o at_o other_o time_n he_o have_v yet_o his_o faith_n pierce_v through_o this_o cloud_n that_o it_o do_v not_o overcome_v he_o but_o he_o overcome_v it_o and_o signify_v his_o faith_n in_o god_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o respect_v that_o sensible_a joy_n and_o comfort_n yet_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o deep_a trial_n the_o father_n be_v with_o he_o in_o love_n and_o in_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n of_o that_o love_n the_o wrath_n become_v mitigate_v and_o qualify_v towards_o man_n and_o to_o speak_v proper_o the_o wrath_n be_v indeed_o against_o man_n but_o never_o on_o any_o account_n direct_o against_o christ_n who_o do_v indeed_o intervene_v and_o intermediate_v betwixt_o it_o and_o we_o to_o bear_v it_o off_o and_o qualify_v it_o as_o be_v abovesaid_a yet_o he_o can_v never_o suffer_v it_o as_o the_o damn_a do_v for_o he_o qualify_v it_o both_o in_o the_o father_n love_n and_o in_o his_o own_o but_o the_o wrath_n which_o the_o damn_a suffer_v have_v no_o such_o qualification_n and_o true_o we_o can_v judge_v that_o the_o father_n be_v to_o speak_v proper_o offend_v or_o displease_v with_o he_o nay_o not_o on_o our_o account_n nor_o do_v the_o scripture_n speak_v any_o thing_n so_o only_o it_o please_v the_o father_n thus_o to_o try_v he_o and_o make_v he_o perfect_a thus_o by_o suffering_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v overcome_v sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o in_o the_o more_o glory_n and_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_v to_o help_v they_o that_o be_v under_o trial_n as_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o be_v present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a they_o have_v also_o great_a influence_n to_o raise_v in_o our_o soul_n most_o fervent_a breathe_n and_o supplication_n unto_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o for_o his_o pardon_v and_o forgive_a grace_n for_o and_o because_o of_o his_o son_n bloodshed_n his_o suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o he_o procure_v or_o purchase_v it_o but_o also_o for_o his_o sanctify_a and_o mortify_v grace_n even_o for_o a_o abundant_a measure_n of_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n of_o grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o die_v perfect_o unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n so_o thâ—t_v the_o soul_n may_v strong_o plead_v with_o the_o lord_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v pour_v forth_o abundant_o of_o his_o grace_n life_n light_n and_o spirit_n because_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v purchase_v it_o abundant_o and_o have_v open_v the_o fountain_n of_o the_o father_n love_n abundant_o by_o his_o obedience_n and_o righteousness_n to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o soul_n may_v come_v and_o draw_v out_o of_o that_o fullness_n of_o he_o which_o he_o have_v purchase_v and_o be_v in_o he_o even_o grace_n for_o grace_n joh._n 1.16_o both_o to_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v and_o as_o much_o the_o one_o as_o the_o other_o v._o also_o these_o thing_n present_v in_o the_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o in_o and_o thereby_o apply_v to_o the_o soul_n become_v very_o strong_a and_o forcible_a motive_n unto_o it_o to_o war_n against_o sin_n universal_o and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o to_o the_o utter_a kill_n and_o destroy_v of_o it_o see_v it_o be_v the_o great_a enemy_n of_o that_o tender_a life_n of_o christ_n which_o suffer_v so_o much_o on_o this_o account_n even_o to_o the_o mortify_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o sin_n and_o save_v it_o therefrom_o so_o that_o if_o the_o come_n life_n and_o way_n of_o conversation_n doctrine_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n be_v a_o most_o noble_a and_o perfect_a example_n unto_o we_o even_o the_o best_a that_o ever_o outward_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v that_o we_o may_v imitate_v his_o virtue_n and_o follow_v his_o step_n in_o all_o godliness_n temperance_n and_o righteousness_n who_o teach_v we_o most_o excellent_a document_n and_o instruction_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n both_o in_o doctrine_n and_o example_n and_o seal_v the_o same_o with_o his_o most_o holy_a and_o bless_a suffering_n who_o know_v no_o sin_n yet_o so_o willing_o
conviction_n judgement_n and_o reproof_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n and_o divine_a principle_n be_v whole_o impartial_a and_o be_v a_o most_o faithful_a witness_n in_o man_n heart_n and_o conscience_n against_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n reprove_v and_o condemn_v those_o sin_n in_o man_n which_o man_n himself_o by_o his_o corrupt_a reason_n do_v excuse_n and_o justify_v 2._o the_o operation_n of_o the_o natural_a principle_n in_o man_n as_o concern_v god_n and_o divine_a thing_n consist_v only_o in_o bare_a speculation_n and_o notion_n and_o most_o if_o not_o whole_o in_o or_o conclusion_n hence_o they_o that_o go_v about_o to_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n or_o a_o natural_a principle_n how_o many_o tedious_a syllogism_n and_o argumentation_n be_v they_o force_v to_o make_v use_n of_o especial_o against_o a_o atheist_n if_o he_o be_v of_o a_o cunning_a and_o subtle_a wit_n and_o when_o a_o man_n be_v inward_o pursue_v with_o atheistical_a thought_n and_o tempt_v in_o his_o heart_n to_o think_v that_o there_o be_v no_o god_n if_o he_o go_v to_o reason_v the_o matter_n and_o essay_n to_o overcome_v that_o tentation_n by_o his_o mere_a natural_a reason_n he_o will_v find_v the_o devil_n a_o stroug_n adversary_n and_o disputant_n against_o he_o he_o will_v suggest_v unto_o he_o â—any_n subtle_a and_o crafty_a answer_n to_o the_o most_o cunning_a reason_n he_o can_v invent_v not_o that_o i_o judge_v that_o it_o can_v be_v true_o and_o convince_o demonstrate_v by_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n but_o i_o say_v such_o a_o conviction_n and_o knowledge_n of_o god_n by_o mere_a reason_n and_o the_o hammer_v and_o work_v of_o the_o mere_a natural_a principle_n be_v still_o but_o a_o bare_a and_o naked_a theory_n or_o notion_n it_o have_v no_o life_n in_o it_o it_o give_v the_o soul_n no_o true_a sense_n or_o feel_n of_o god_n no_o intuitive_a knowledge_n of_o he_o but_o only_o that_o which_o be_v abstractive_a and_o notional_a even_o as_o the_o knowledge_n be_v which_o a_o blind_a man_n have_v of_o colour_n or_o which_o a_o deaf_a man_n have_v of_o music_n and_o pleasant_a sound_n whereas_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o divine_a principle_n the_o divine_a spirit_n and_o light_n in_o man_n heart_n excit_v and_o begete_v in_o he_o a_o true_a live_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o goodness_n love_n mercy_n power_n holiness_n purity_n and_o justice_n and_o this_o be_v more_o effectual_a than_o all_o demonstration_n of_o reason_n or_o of_o the_o natural_a principle_n for_o i_o can_v doubt_v of_o the_o be_v of_o that_o which_o i_o have_v a_o real_a sense_n of_o which_o i_o see_v taste_n and_o feel_v nor_o do_v i_o need_v any_o exercise_n of_o my_o reason_n to_o persuade_v i_o of_o its_o true_a real_a existence_n and_o although_o unconverted_a soul_n feel_v little_a or_o have_v little_a sense_n or_o taste_v of_o the_o lord_n love_n goodness_n and_o mercy_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o great_a sin_n that_o do_v so_o distemper_v and_o corrupt_v the_o true_a capacity_n or_o faculty_n in_o they_o which_o can_v have_v a_o true_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o same_o even_o as_o a_o fever_n do_v corrupt_v the_o natural_a taste_n of_o the_o mouth_n that_o it_o can_v trâ—â—ly_o relish_v the_o sweetness_n of_o wine_n or_o honey_n but_o it_o seem_v unpleasant_a yet_o in_o the_o unconvert_v and_o corrupt_a state_n man_n be_v true_o sensible_a of_o the_o inward_a work_n and_o operation_n and_o appearance_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a principle_n of_o his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n in_o judgement_n and_o wrath_n and_o terror_n so_o that_o they_o can_v feel_v the_o word_n of_o life_n in_o they_o as_o it_o prick_v and_o wound_v they_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o be_v as_o a_o hammer_n a_o axe_n a_o two-edged_a sword_n and_o fire_n in_o their_o most_o inward_a part_n against_o not_o only_o all_o manner_n of_o actual_a transgression_n but_o against_o the_o very_a habit_n and_o habitual_a inclination_n of_o sin_n lay_v the_o axe_n to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o strike_v at_o the_o very_a nature_n and_o be_v of_o sin_n in_o the_o heart_n bless_a be_v the_o soul_n that_o be_v true_o sensible_a of_o this_o inward_a work_n of_o judgement_n have_v a_o true_a love_n unto_o the_o same_o and_o do_v patient_o lie_v under_o the_o judgement_n the_o prick_n the_o hammer_v the_o wound_a and_o bruise_v and_o break_v in_o piece_n vea_o the_o kill_a and_o burn_v and_o as_o it_o be_v utter_o consume_v and_o destroy_v the_o soul_n until_o the_o life_n and_o nature_n of_o sin_n be_v slay_v therein_o and_o the_o soul_n be_v thorough_o cleanse_v and_o redeem_v thereby_o now_o whatever_o soul_n have_v the_o least_o experience_n of_o this_o kind_n it_o may_v certain_o conclude_v it_o be_v the_o true_a and_o infallible_a effect_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n and_o principle_n and_o not_o of_o the_o natural_a and_o humane_a for_o even_o as_o the_o light_n of_o the_o moon_n have_v no_o heat_n nor_o can_v burn_v any_o thing_n though_o never_o so_o combustible_a but_o be_v sensible_o cold_a even_o so_o the_o natural_a principle_n in_o its_o utmost_a extent_n have_v no_o true_a heat_n to_o tender_a or_o melt_v the_o soul_n can_v kindle_v no_o true_a fire_n in_o it_o to_o purify_v or_o refine_v it_o from_o sin_n or_o consume_v true_o the_o least_o sin_n hence_o 3._o the_o operation_n of_o the_o divine_a principle_n in_o its_o very_a first_o appearance_n by_o a_o innate_a purity_n and_o perfect_a contrariety_n to_o sin_n do_v work_n in_o the_o soul_n against_o all_o sin_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o have_v a_o wonderful_a antipathy_n against_o it_o even_o as_o good_a physic_n do_v work_v in_o the_o body_n against_o a_o disease_n and_o this_o contrariety_n be_v most_o sensible_o feel_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o as_o it_o be_v entertain_v cause_v powerful_a and_o unusual_a motion_n to_o seize_v upon_o the_o soul_n and_o sometime_o on_o the_o body_n also_o until_o sin_n be_v utter_o vanquish_v and_o overcome_v but_o the_o natural_a principle_n have_v no_o such_o perfect_a contrariety_n to_o sin_n as_o be_v itself_o exceed_o corrupt_v and_o defile_v therewith_o 4._o the_o divine_a principle_n work_v most_o powerful_o and_o sensible_o when_o the_o mind_n be_v silent_a and_o do_v rest_n from_o its_o own_o mere_a natural_a work_n and_o especial_o from_o its_o soar_a imagination_n and_o lofty_a reason_n and_o although_o in_o the_o unconverted_a state_n it_o seldom_o or_o never_o be_v perfect_o silent_a yet_o at_o sometime_o it_o be_v more_o silent_a quiet_a and_o calm_a than_o at_o other_o time_n for_o even_o the_o sea_n do_v not_o always_o rage_n although_o it_o always_o have_v some_o motion_n 5._o the_o divine_a principle_n never_o work_v at_o or_o in_o the_o will_n of_o man_n but_o only_o in_o the_o will_n of_o god_n whereas_o the_o corrupt_a and_o deprave_a will_n of_o man_n can_v set_v the_o natural_a principle_n on_o work_n when_o and_o how_o it_o please_v 6._o there_o be_v somewhat_o that_o be_v unexpressible_a and_o can_v be_v name_v in_o word_n but_o can_v be_v inward_o feel_v both_o in_o the_o divine_a principle_n and_o all_o its_o operation_n whereby_o through_o a_o innate_a self-evidencing_a power_n and_o authority_n it_o do_v real_o distinguish_v itself_o and_o may_v be_v real_o discern_v as_o distinct_a from_o the_o natural_a and_o humane_a principle_n and_o all_o its_o work_n as_o also_o from_o the_o more_o subtle_a and_o cunning_a transforming_n of_o the_o enemy_n if_o the_o soul_n be_v but_o diligent_a and_o watchful_a to_o observe_v the_o same_o and_o have_v a_o true_a desire_n to_o understand_v the_o difference_n and_o clear_o to_o distinguish_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o and_o indeed_o this_o innate_a self-evidencing_a power_n of_o the_o divine_a principle_n be_v that_o principal_o whereby_o it_o can_v be_v discern_v from_o the_o humane_a and_o natural_a for_o although_o it_o be_v true_o distinguishable_a also_o by_o its_o effect_n as_o christ_n say_v you_o shall_v know_v the_o tree_n by_o its_o fruit_n yet_o the_o question_n at_o present_a relate_v to_o the_o state_n of_o those_o who_o be_v but_o new_o convince_v and_o so_o have_v but_o little_a experience_n of_o its_o effect_n in_o they_o also_o see_v there_o be_v counterfeit_a effect_n as_o a_o counterfeit_a holiness_n purity_n humility_n etc._n etc._n the_o true_a effect_n can_v be_v infallible_o
not_o apprehend_v nor_o acknowledge_v that_o that_o birth_n have_v any_o thing_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n more_o than_o the_o birth_n of_o any_o other_o man_n which_o i_o say_v it_o have_v according_a to_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n give_v i_o concern_v it_o and_o this_o be_v demonstrable_a also_o from_o scripture_n â—_o but_o i_o shall_v soon_o put_v a_o end_n to_o both_o these_o reason_n and_o yet_o also_o speak_v or_o declare_v free_o that_o which_o be_v give_v i_o concern_v the_o same_o and_o in_o plainness_n so_o far_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v admit_v i_o say_v then_o that_o neither_o be_v the_o godhead_n itself_o conceive_v or_o bear_v in_o this_o birth_n nor_o yet_o be_v it_o a_o particle_n or_o portion_n thereof_o for_o i_o confess_v to_o say_v either_o of_o these_o two_o be_v very_o unsound_a and_o be_v altogether_o contrary_a unto_o and_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o dignity_n and_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o as_o for_o the_o godhead_n to_o speak_v proper_o it_o be_v not_o discerpible_a into_o particle_n and_o thus_o i_o have_v plain_o clear_v myself_o of_o the_o least_o ground_n of_o suspicion_n of_o blasphemy_n or_o unsoundness_n as_o to_o the_o nature_n and_o dignity_n of_o the_o godhead_n that_o be_v without_o all_o variableness_n or_o shadow_n of_o change_n and_o now_o to_o that_o question_n viz._n if_o that_o birth_n have_v in_o it_o and_o that_o substantial_o and_o in_o its_o very_a nature_n somewhat_o above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n what_o can_v it_o be_v but_o the_o godhead_n itself_o i_o answer_v yea_o it_o have_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o godhead_n itself_o but_o a_o certain_a middle_a nature_n substance_n or_o be_v betwixt_o the_o godhead_n and_o mankind_n that_o be_v as_o far_o yea_o and_o much_o far_a transcendent_a in_o glory_n above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n as_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n be_v above_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o beast_n yea_o it_o be_v even_o above_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o angel_n this_o will_v be_v think_v the_o more_o strange_a of_o by_o many_o because_o they_o have_v be_v common_o teach_v and_o have_v common_o receive_v it_o that_o there_o be_v no_o middle_a substance_n betwixt_o the_o godhead_n and_o we_o at_o least_o as_o to_o the_o inward_a for_o they_o have_v suppose_v that_o the_o spirit_n or_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n or_o a_o angel_n be_v next_o unto_o the_o godhead_n which_o i_o deny_v for_o the_o heavenly_a or_o divine_a substance_n or_o essence_n of_o which_o the_o divine_a birth_n be_v both_o conceive_v in_o mary_n and_o be_v inward_o conceive_v in_o the_o saint_n be_v of_o a_o middle_a nature_n now_o this_o middle_a nature_n i_o call_v a_o divine_a substance_n or_o essence_n not_o as_o if_o it_o be_v the_o godhead_n itself_o or_o a_o particle_n or_o portion_n of_o it_o but_o because_o of_o its_o excellency_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n next_o unto_o the_o godhead_n as_o on_o such_o a_o account_n man_n do_v call_v other_o thing_n divine_a which_o be_v very_o excellent_a yea_o some_o call_v holy_a man_n divine_a and_o some_o call_v these_o who_o teach_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n divine_n as_o john_n manner_n of_o man_n we_o common_o say_v such_o a_o place_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v such_o a_o man_n be_v because_o of_o his_o dwell_n or_o abide_v there_o and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v call_v the_o construe_v this_o to_o have_v be_v intend_v by_o some_o in_o some_o other_o place_n who_o affirm_v that_o christ_n as_o man_n be_v bear_v of_o the_o divine_a essence_n or_o substance_n for_o so_o say_v i_o according_a to_o the_o foresay_a explanation_n that_o he_o be_v not_o only_o bear_v of_o it_o but_o of_o the_o essence_n or_o substance_n of_o man_n also_o through_o mary_n and_o thus_o he_o be_v both_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o son_n of_o man_n according_a to_o his_o very_a birth_n in_o mary_n and_o therefore_o even_o according_a to_o that_o birth_n he_o have_v a_o divine_a perfection_n and_o virtue_n and_o that_o substantial_a above_o all_o other_o man_n that_o ever_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v who_o be_v the_o heavenly_a man_n by_o virtue_n of_o which_o divine_a perfection_n he_o be_v unite_v with_o god_n in_o a_o immediate_a manner_n and_o replenish_v with_o such_o a_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n as_o no_o other_o man_n or_o man_n be_v capable_a of_o
