of_o himself_o and_o other_o and_o here_o lie_v a_o sad_a deceit_n when_o man_n do_v only_o resemble_v the_o word_n or_o carriage_n of_o another_o which_o it_o may_v be_v in_o that_o party_n flow_v from_o a_o principle_n or_o power_n of_o god_n in_o he_o and_o by_o a_o resemble_v of_o he_o and_o get_v into_o his_o form_n think_v their_o condition_n be_v the_o happy_a and_o so_o glory_n in_o it_o more_o than_o before_o so_o that_o though_o his_o humility_n flow_v from_o a_o divine_a work_n in_o he_o yet_o the_o other_o be_v but_o shape_v out_o of_o what_o be_v express_v by_o or_o from_o he_o and_o here_o lie_v much_o danger_n especial_o if_o man_n rest_v in_o the_o same_o the_o forth_o way_n whereby_o humility_n come_v most_o common_o to_o be_v attain_v and_o the_o way_n indeed_o be_v from_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n thereby_o man_n come_v not_o only_o to_o have_v the_o effect_n or_o branch_n cut_v off_o but_o the_o cause_n or_o root_n of_o the_o same_o take_v away_o so_o as_o now_o man_n have_v it_o not_o in_o the_o form_n or_o shape_n but_o in_o power_n and_o substance_n and_o now_o man_n be_v true_o what_o he_o seem_v to_o be_v but_o not_o before_o whereby_o as_o the_o creature_n be_v humble_v so_o god_n be_v exalt_v and_o this_o be_v the_o creature_n joy_n though_o not_o his_o rest_n whole_o this_o humility_n now_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o god_n enjoy_v whereby_o man_n be_v make_v to_o partake_v of_o god_n natrue_a and_o this_o nature_n break_v out_o into_o these_o particular_a effect_n but_o now_o this_o very_a effect_n of_o humility_n though_o it_o be_v from_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o rest_n of_o a_o saint_n but_o the_o cause_n which_o be_v god_n the_o next_o part_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o utterance_n which_o be_v that_o many_o have_v that_o know_v not_o god_n and_o many_o have_v not_o which_o sweet_o enjoy_v he_o so_o that_o man_n who_o be_v free_o carry_v forth_o to_o utter_v or_o make_v know_v any_o thing_n he_o conceive_v be_v truth_n yet_o there_o be_v neither_o cause_n of_o trust_v to_o it_o or_o rest_a in_o it_o neither_o be_v there_o cause_n why_o a_o soul_n shall_v the_o more_o glory_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o it_o or_o be_v trouble_v in_o the_o want_n of_o it_o the_o last_o part_n or_o gift_n we_o shall_v speak_v of_o be_v memory_n this_o part_n of_o memory_n be_v that_o which_o do_v most_o sweet_o adorn_v man_n in_o the_o visible_a make_n of_o it_o forth_o and_o it_o make_v man_n much_o adore_v for_o it_o it_o be_v 1._o away_o to_o grow_v very_o profitable_a in_o respect_n of_o he_o that_o have_v it_o and_o beneficial_a to_o they_o for_o who_o he_o employ_v it_o as_o namely_o in_o that_o dispensation_n of_o hear_v after_o which_o the_o party_n which_o enjoy_v this_o part_n be_v able_a to_o repeat_v or_o declare_v almost_o verbatim_o what_o he_o have_v hear_v this_o make_v he_o very_o profitable_a in_o what_o he_o hear_v in_o respect_n of_o gather_a knowledge_n and_o benificiall_a to_o other_o from_o the_o improvement_n of_o the_o same_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o two_o minister_n so_o profess_v of_o themselves_o study_v their_o matter_n the_o one_o bring_v it_o in_o a_o piece_n of_o paper_n and_o the_o other_o in_o the_o same_o method_n or_o form_n though_o in_o his_o understanding_n because_o the_o one_o excel_v the_o otther_o in_o this_o part_n of_o memory_n and_o this_o make_v the_o one_o more_o esteem_v than_o the_o other_o and_o the_o one_o to_o appear_v more_o weak_a than_o the_o other_o but_o alas_o though_o all_o these_o be_v in_o one_o man_n in_o a_o high_a strain_n than_o i_o have_v declare_v yet_o they_o all_o be_v but_o a_o poor_a rest_n or_o cause_n of_o joy_n or_o contentment_n to_o any_o heart_n and_o true_o when_o god_n appear_v so_o as_o to_o manifest_v himself_o the_o soul_n shall_v see_v the_o weakness_n and_o foolly_a of_o his_o spirit_n to_o be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o whole_a not_o to_o be_v any_o cause_n of_o rest_n though_o they_o be_v dispensation_n of_o god_n and_o be_v free_o give_v by_o god_n for_o all_o these_o may_v be_v in_o a_o very_a hypocrite_n or_o in_o a_o mere_a natural_a man_n first_o of_o all_o to_o conclude_v this_o rest_n 1._o it_o be_v a_o abuse_n of_o a_o gift_n and_o a_o affornt_v put_v upon_o the_o giver_n to_o make_v it_o either_o cause_n of_o rest_n or_o a_o evidence_n of_o a_o true_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n 2._o that_o soul_n most_o common_o who_o be_v not_o lead_v in_o the_o spirit_n either_o to_o behold_v god_n or_o enjoy_v he_o to_o be_v the_o rest_v of_o spirit_n be_v most_o usual_a &_o it_o can_v hardly_o be_v prevent_v to_o rest_n upon_o such_o rest_v as_o we_o have_v declare_v but_o consider_v that_o must_v be_v the_o rest_n of_o any_o who_o see_v or_o enjoy_v not_o one_o manifest_v to_o he_o to_o be_v above_o it_o man_n must_v have_v some_o rest_n either_o true_a or_o false_a but_o that_o must_v be_v the_o safe_a rest_n the_o which_o no_o hypocrite_n do_v at_o tain_n nor_o can_v enjoy_v which_o be_v god_n manifest_v in_o the_o spirit_n further_o why_o shall_v any_o man_n place_n his_o rest_n upon_o any_o thing_n which_o will_v come_v to_o nothing_o or_o be_v give_v to_o change_v or_o why_o shall_v we_o make_v that_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o happiness_n which_o be_v but_o a_o talent_n give_v to_o be_v improve_v which_o may_v be_v take_v away_o at_o the_o owner_n pleasure_n be_v give_v only_o to_o be_v improve_v and_o then_o man_n rest_n and_o peace_n cease_v and_o in_o this_o particular_a do_v â—he_n folly_n of_o man_n heart_n appear_v in_o abuse_v the_o end_n of_o every_o dispensation_n as_o of_o this_o of_o part_n as._n first_o the_o abuse_n of_o part_n lie_v in_o the_o boast_n and_o glory_v in_o the_o gift_n and_o not_o in_o he_o that_o give_v it_o and_o also_o in_o this_o to_o make_v they_o his_o rest_n 2._o for_o a_o man_n so_o to_o glory_n in_o they_o as_o to_o make_v again_o of_o they_o &_o improve_v in_o they_o for_o to_o get_v honour_n and_o preferment_n and_o glory_n in_o the_o world_n this_o i_o fear_v be_v partly_o the_o end_n of_o simon_n magus_n in_o desire_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n alas_o all_o gift_n be_v empty_a without_o god_n be_v manifest_v in_o they_o and_o poor_a contentment_n do_v they_o afford_v to_o he_o that_o rest_v in_o they_o and_o here_o man_n be_v set_v they_o in_o god_n place_n and_o labour_v to_o dispossess_v god_n who_o be_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o this_o be_v another_o abuse_n of_o part_n a_o world_n of_o deceit_n lie_v in_o man_n heart_n about_o gift_n or_o part_n if_o abuse_v first_o they_o will_v not_o make_v forth_o themselves_o unless_o it_o be_v where_o they_o be_v honour_v or_o else_o they_o labour_v for_o the_o same_o by_o the_o improvement_n of_o they_o be_v the_o most_o free_a where_o it_o be_v the_o most_o applaud_v and_o the_o most_o straighten_a and_o wary_a of_o that_o place_n where_o it_o be_v not_o adore_v and_o exalt_v and_o set_v up_o above_o the_o proper_a station_n of_o the_o creature_n be_v much_o cheer_v when_o exalt_v and_o much_o cast_v down_o when_o reject_v or_o at_o least_o not_o so_o applaud_v as_o he_o require_v or_o expect_v here_o be_v man_n much_o abuse_v part_n and_o set_v they_o in_o god_n stead_n in_o the_o which_o man_n shall_v be_v bring_v to_o a_o loss_n when_o god_n do_v â—â—â—ifest_v himself_o in_o that_o heart_n the_o four_o false_a rest_n the_o next_o rest_n in_o order_n to_o this_o be_v zeal_n for_o the_o truth_n zeal_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o god_n be_v that_o which_o the_o most_o go_v through_o before_o the_o manifestation_n of_o god_n yet_o though_o it_o be_v good_a in_o its_o place_n and_o a_o dispensation_n to_o be_v own_v yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o deceitful_a rest_n we_o know_v the_o cry_n of_o he_o in_o the_o scripture_n who_o be_v rest_a and_o glory_v in_o his_o zeal_n for_o god_n when_o he_o cry_v come_v see_v my_o zeal_n for_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n so_o we_o know_v many_o man_n zeal_n go_v before_o their_o knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o the_o spirit_n we_o hear_v of_o a_o zealous_a saul_n who_o be_v mad_a of_o zeal_n in_o a_o abundance_n of_o pain_n and_o diligence_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o in_o book_n do_v get_v abundance_n of_o knowledge_n and_o after_o it_o be_v get_v they_o rest_v upon_o the_o same_o as_o though_o it_o be_v to_o enjoy_v the_o manifestation_n of_o god_n to_o enjoy_v much_o knowledge_n here_o they_o abuse_v a_o dispensation_n of_o god_n and_o transform_v it_o into_o another_o use_n then_o ever_o god_n ordain_v it_o for_o so_o that_o though_o a_o man_n have_v never_o so_o much_o knowledge_n yea_o though_o his_o knowledge_n be_v according_a to_o or_o attain_v in_o the_o scripture_n if_o he_o rest_v there_o before_o he_o have_v get_v it_o in_o the_o heart_n by_o expersence_n as_o he_o have_v get_v it_o in_o the_o head_n for_o discourse_n his_o rest_n be_v much_o below_o the_o substance_n of_o truth_n for_o no_o man_n be_v to_o rest_v in_o any_o thing_n without_o he_o so_o know_v until_o it_o be_v within_o he_o and_o then_o he_o rest_v not_o in_o god_n because_o declare_v in_o scripture_n but_o upon_o god_n because_o reveal_v and_o experience_v in_o he_o and_o so_o be_v full_o know_v by_o he_o the_o three_o way_n whereby_o this_o knowledge_n come_v to_o be_v attain_v be_v from_o the_o declaring_n of_o the_o experience_n of_o other_o he_o by_o the_o same_o store_v himself_o with_o point_n of_o experience_n as_o well_o as_o point_n of_o judgement_n and_o here_o he_o can_v speak_v all_o manner_n of_o language_n as_o well_o as_o those_o that_o enjoy_v truth_n in_o they_o so_o that_o he_o can_v speak_v of_o point_n of_o judgement_n with_o those_o that_o be_v for_o that_o discourse_n and_o point_n of_o experience_n with_o those_o that_o be_v for_o that_o have_v a_o form_n of_o both_o in_o his_o understanding_n and_o from_o that_o be_v able_a to_o make_v out_o himself_o as_o those_o who_o sweet_o in_o the_o power_n of_o truth_n enjoy_v god_n but_o for_o this_o latter_a he_o have_v but_o steal_v the_o word_n from_o his_o neighbour_n he_o have_v get_v his_o experience_n to_o discourse_v of_o and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a deceit_n of_o man_n spirit_n in_o our_o day_n for_o when_o they_o hear_v of_o a_o precious_a high_a truth_n of_o god_n which_o they_o never_o hear_v of_o before_o they_o either_o oppose_v it_o or_o else_o they_o get_v the_o form_n of_o it_o into_o their_o notion_n or_o understanding_n and_o the_o next_o upportunity_n they_o have_v they_o declare_v it_o as_o their_o own_o whereas_o though_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o yet_o they_o be_v to_o wait_v for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o power_n of_o it_o in_o themselves_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v seal_v by_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o 1_o cor._n 4._o 19_o 20._o but_o many_o conceive_v if_o they_o can_v but_o remember_v a_o truth_n though_o they_o have_v it_o not_o in_o the_o power_n of_o it_o in_o themselves_o that_o the_o very_o believe_v of_o it_o and_o assent_v to_o it_o be_v the_o experience_n of_o it_o bud_n these_o be_v those_o who_o have_v a_o form_n of_o god_n or_o the_o truth_n in_o their_o understanding_n and_o want_v the_o power_n of_o that_o truth_n in_o their_o spirit_n and_o so_o many_o a_o soul_n rest_v in_o this_o very_a part_n of_o knowledge_n now_o the_o reason_n of_o a_o soul_n rest_v here_o be_v partly_o these_o follow_v first_o from_o a_o comparison_n make_v in_o his_o own_o spirit_n with_o other_o that_o be_v in_o low_a dispensation_n or_o weak_a in_o knowledge_n or_o discourse_n then_o himself_o but_o especial_o professor_n who_o live_v in_o high_a thought_n of_o their_o estate_n and_o he_o thus_o compare_v his_o condition_n with_o they_o and_o see_v it_o so_o far_o excel_v they_o make_v his_o conclusion_n if_o their_o condition_n be_v happy_a then_o i_o be_v much_o more_o in_o respect_n of_o what_o i_o have_v enjoy_v more_o than_o they_o i_o be_o not_o any_o way_n inferior_a to_o any_o almost_o sure_o i_o be_o in_o a_o happy_a estate_n if_o any_o the_o that_o it_o occasion_n much_o distraction_n and_o want_n of_o peace_n within_o himself_o for_o when_o part_n of_o a_o man_n cause_n of_o rest_n and_o peace_n be_v take_v away_o no_o marvel_n then_o if_o part_n of_o his_o rest_n and_o peace_n go_v along_o with_o it_o whereas_o he_o that_o rest_v in_o god_n be_v free_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o be_v as_o mount_n zion_n which_o can_v not_o be_v though_o the_o soul_n have_v in_o this_o a_o real_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n now_o a_o man_n may_v know_v a_o thing_n in_o general_a and_o may_v believe_v in_o it_o assent_n to_o it_o and_o obey_v it_o and_o make_v a_o large_a profession_n of_o it_o yet_o if_o he_o enjoy_v not_o god_n in_o that_o very_a thing_n it_o be_v but_o a_o dispensation_n below_o the_o power_n of_o truth_n so_o that_o we_o see_v here_o that_o man_n may_v get_v thing_n into_o the_o head_n before_o they_o be_v in_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o they_o in_o the_o heart_n which_o if_o rest_v upon_o bring_v with_o it_o a_o dangerous_a consequence_n as_o 1._o it_o be_v the_o way_n to_o high_a security_n and_o such_o a_o security_n be_v but_o carnal_a as_o be_v without_o ground_n it_o be_v the_o way_n in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o a_o self-glorying_a and_o creature_n exalt_v and_o to_o the_o displease_v of_o god_n three_o it_o be_v the_o way_n to_o fall_v into_o all_o manner_n of_o looseness_n under_o pretence_n of_o freedom_n and_o knowledge_n of_o truth_n and_o that_o be_v no_o sin_n though_o â—t_a do_v this_o or_o that_o for_o no_o marvel_n when_o a_o man_n have_v no_o more_o than_o a_o form_n of_o god_n thus_o do_v justify_v his_o action_n by_o his_o hardness_n of_o spirit_n which_o by_o it_o he_o be_v bring_v into_o and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o when_o they_o have_v receive_v high_a grow_v in_o knowledge_n daily_o more_o establish_v on_o his_o own_o bottom_n though_o not_o so_o think_v by_o himself_o this_o daily_a increase_n of_o knowledge_n in_o himself_o the_o benefit_n that_o sometime_o be_v redound_v to_o other_o by_o that_o do_v increase_v the_o flame_n and_o add_v fuel_n to_o the_o fire_n of_o this_o false_a rest_n the_o second_o excellent_a part_n or_o gift_n upon_o which_o man_n rest_v be_v prayer_n and_o this_o be_v make_v a_o idol_n of_o by_o such_o party_n who_o rest_v upon_o it_o but_o first_o of_o all_o when_o a_o man_n set_v his_o face_n towards_o god_n it_o will_v glad_o pray_v but_o want_v this_o proper_a gift_n it_o use_v form_n but_o after_o it_o see_v the_o vanity_n of_o that_o dispensation_n and_o the_o emptiness_n of_o it_o it_o now_o will_v glad_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o continual_o be_v complain_v for_o want_n of_o matter_n to_o express_v in_o conclusion_n it_o attain_v matter_n to_o express_v and_o

make_v they_o their_o tabernacle_n and_o rest_n yea_o their_o home_n yea_o their_o god_n peace_n and_o happiness_n which_o if_o they_o be_v take_v away_o their_o god_n be_v go_v and_o their_o peace_n have_v take_v its_o wing_n and_o fly_v away_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o in_o church_n relation_n have_v a_o name_n they_o live_v and_o yet_o be_v dead_a that_o be_v they_o have_v a_o name_n of_o saint_n and_o christian_n but_o they_o want_v the_o nature_n of_o they_o they_o have_v a_o profession_n but_o want_v a_o possession_n this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o come_v to_o have_v a_o burn_a up_o in_o their_o spirit_n and_o be_v bring_v to_o a_o daily_a loss_n they_o run_v fast_o into_o form_n and_o church_n relation_n than_o god_n do_v lead_v they_o therefore_o in_o they_o god_n leave_v they_o for_o this_o reason_n the_o expectation_n of_o many_o be_v frustrate_v which_o cause_v nothing_o but_o death_n and_o sorrow_n when_o they_o have_v long_v and_o press_v out_o after_o form_n and_o be_v member_n of_o congregation_n and_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o pure_a ordinance_n think_v to_o find_v so_o much_o in_o they_o and_o to_o conceive_v so_o much_o from_o they_o and_o when_o they_o come_v there_o behold_v nothing_o but_o dâ—iâ—es_n and_o emptiness_n and_o the_o want_n of_o god_n and_o so_o have_v suffer_v loss_n this_o be_v partly_o the_o reason_n of_o all_o the_o rent_n and_o breach_n in_o all_o church_n congregat_v and_o why_o they_o can_v stand_v be_v because_o they_o be_v not_o lead_v by_o god_n into_o these_o form_n neither_o do_v they_o see_v god_n clear_o go_v before_o they_o but_o some_o by_o affection_n some_o by_o misinformation_n and_o some_o out_o of_o zeal_n so_o that_o now_o very_o little_a of_o god_n appear_v either_o in_o their_o come_n in_o continue_v with_o or_o part_v from_o thus_o be_v bind_v up_o in_o form_n and_o live_n in_o they_o and_o dote_v too_o much_o upon_o they_o and_o rejoice_v too_o much_o in_o they_o and_o judge_v all_o that_o speak_v not_o for_o they_o or_o join_v not_o with_o they_o yea_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v devour_v one_o another_o because_o we_o all_o do_v not_o look_v for_o
