great_a happiness_n and_o contentment_n but_o god_n have_v resolve_v the_o contrary_a to_o make_v nothing_o of_o the_o world_n but_o to_o turn_v it_o into_o vanity_n of_o vanity_n he_o have_v set_v it_o forth_o as_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v shake_v to_o be_v remoove_v to_o resolve_v with_o the_o lose_a fire_n and_o only_o to_o be_v a_o school_n and_o nursery_n for_o the_o next_o world_n therefore_o do_v he_o
in_o the_o world_n can_v shake_v us._n 3._o part._n to_o answer_v these_o thing_n first_o in_o the_o root_n the_o very_a root_n of_o this_o kind_n of_o say_n and_o misbeleefe_n be_v the_o natural_a wisdom_n of_o man_n which_o be_v indeed_o folly_n for_o itself_o think_v wise_o of_o it_o self_n and_o make_v itself_o the_o measure_n of_o all_o thing_n yea_o of_o the_o divinity_n itself_o it_o contract_v or_o dispose_v that_o and_o all_o other_o thing_n according_a to_o its_o own_o measure_n and_o judgement_n but_o herein_o be_v two_o fault_n the_o one_o be_v because_o the_o wisdom_n of_o man_n at_o the_o best_a be_v narrow_a and_o shallow_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n and_o can_v pierce_v unto_o the_o depth_n or_o comprehend_v the_o breadth_n of_o that_o which_o be_v deep_o and_o large_a than_o itself_o yea_o in_o familiar_a and_o daily_a thing_n our_o wisdom_n lie_v down_o be_v dazzle_v and_o amaze_v so_o that_o if_o god_n please_v to_o set_v forth_o any_o deep_a judgement_n or_o wisdom_n of_o he_o it_o be_v beyond_o &_o without_o our_o judgement_n therefore_o can_v they_o see_v nothing_o therein_o but_o rather_o be_v offend_v with_o it_o then_o the_o true_o wise_a man_n cry_v out_o with_o saint_n paul_n o_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n and_o so_o leave_v with_o admiration_n and_o then_o the_o foolish_a wise_a man_n say_v that_o which_o he_o comprehend_v not_o be_v not_o but_o that_o the_o very_a wisdom_n of_o god_n be_v foolishness_n another_o fault_n be_v because_o our_o wisdom_n beside_o the_o shallowness_n and_o narrowness_n thereof_o be_v corrupt_v and_o pervert_v the_o flesh_n lie_v on_o the_o soul_n as_o a_o finger_n upon_o the_o string_n of_o a_o lute_n and_o make_v it_o to_o sound_v speak_v &_o to_o be_v wise_a according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o that_o which_o stop_v it_o now_o the_o flesh_n have_v this_o corruption_n in_o it_o that_o it_o be_v avert_v from_o god_n our_o true_a sovereign_a good_a &_o turn_v to_o the_o creature_n set_v her_o happiness_n thereon_o this_o it_o sound_v still_o unto_o the_o understanding_n on_o which_o it_o lie_v this_o way_n it_o turn_v stiff_o the_o will_n so_o that_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n which_o teach_v the_o contrary_a be_v loathsome_a to_o it_o it_o be_v hate_v and_o condemn_v of_o it_o and_o overcome_v with_o these_o two_o infirmity_n it_o seem_v this_o man_n have_v by_o they_o examine_v these_o great_a mystery_n of_o god_n whereas_o by_o strong_a mortification_n of_o this_o fleshly_a wisdom_n and_o the_o help_n of_o the_o spirit_n obtain_v by_o earnest_a prayer_n hunger_n and_o thirst_n the_o flesh_n be_v make_v quiet_a &_o unmoove_a and_o the_o spirit_n open_v the_o blind_a eye_n of_o he_o and_o our_o soul_n he_o and_o we_o may_v perceive_v a_o high_a wisdom_n in_o these_o matter_n of_o god_n yea_o and_o we_o shall_v perceive_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o can_v not_o before_o perceive_v they_o 4._o part._n but_o particular_o to_o answer_v the_o branch_n for_o the_o first_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o god_n shall_v be_v imagine_v without_o justice_n and_o why_o justice_n shall_v be_v consider_v without_o a_o will_n of_o punish_v fault_n and_o why_o the_o punishment_n of_o fault_n commit_v against_o god_n the_o chief_a essence_n shall_v not_o be_v a_o chief_a punishment_n even_o of_o blood_n and_o death_n which_o be_v allow_v for_o offence_n against_o man_n and_o proportionable_o believe_v mercy_n to_o be_v in_o the_o same_o god_n we_o may_v reasonable_o believe_v that_o mercy_n may_v take_v the_o punishment_n of_o one_o for_o another_o this_o other_o be_v unite_v to_o that_o one_o and_o so_o consequent_o the_o punishment_n be_v one_o the_o same_o they_o both_o be_v make_v one_o again_o if_o there_o may_v be_v such_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o one_o for_o another_o why_o shall_v not_o the_o blood_n of_o beast_n serve_v to_o teach_v man_n that_o sacrifice_n unto_o their_o eternal_a preservation_n aswell_o as_o be_v daily_o shed_v for_o their_o temporal_a nourishment_n man_n be_v their_o end_n &_o god_n their_o creator_n who_o therefore_o may_v appoint_v this_o use_n of_o they_o unto_o man_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o now_o for_o the_o second_o branch_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n will_v show_v wonderful_a effect_n first_n who_o have_v tie_v god_n to_o give_v such_o a_o measure_n of_o his_o spirit_n as_o this_o man_n list_v but_o it_o be_v still_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n to_o dispose_v his_o gift_n in_o his_o own_o measure_n if_o it_o please_v he_o he_o may_v separate_v the_o gift_n of_o sanctification_n from_o the_o gift_n of_o miracle_n give_v one_o &_o not_o the_o other_o yea_o in_o very_a sanctification_n he_o may_v kindle_v we_o sometime_o as_o flax_n that_o do_v but_o smoke_n and_o shall_v i_o say_v then_o that_o except_o i_o see_v the_o flame_n i_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v any_o fire_n yet_o his_o grace_n in_o many_o be_v so_o strong_a that_o they_o be_v plain_o apparent_a and_o cry_v out_o loud_o the_o power_n of_o god_n &_o not_o of_o man_n for_o be_v it_o not_o a_o power_n evident_o supernatural_a that_o man_n true_o possess_v of_o their_o wit_n see_v and_o will_v fight_n subdue_v and_o forsake_v their_o own_o dear_a affection_n and_o sweet_a pleasure_n which_o they_o see_v and_o feel_v yea_o leave_v the_o world_n and_o life_n itself_o to_o please_v god_n who_o they_o see_v not_o to_o serve_v he_o to_o obtain_v he_o where_o as_o the_o general_a world_n yea_o and_o the_o wise_a of_o they_o do_v clean_o contrary_a do_v not_o this_o show_n they_o be_v move_v with_o a_o spirit_n different_a from_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n yea_o &_o contrary_a to_o it_o which_o be_v a_o divine_a spirit_n for_o nothing_o but_o god_n can_v turn_v man_n hart_n unto_o god_n be_v natural_o fix_v and_o nail_v to_o the_o world_n part._n 5._o but_o true_a it_o be_v that_o god_n have_v so_o dispose_v of_o this_o grace_n that_o he_o leave_v in_o we_o infirmity_n still_o to_o combat_v with_o it_o and_o sometime_o to_o quail_v it_o for_o a_o time_n the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v diverse_a first_o he_o will_v get_v glory_n by_o our_o weakness_n for_o we_o be_v in_o a_o fight_n with_o our_o near_a flesh_n and_o the_o next_o world_n and_o the_o devil_n the_o prince_n of_o this_o world_n strong_a mighty_a and_o overmatch_a enemy_n the_o glory_n must_v needs_o be_v he_o if_o we_o that_o be_v too_o weak_a for_o they_o overcome_v they_o and_o again_o the_o less_o power_n he_o perform_v the_o victory_n withal_o the_o more_o be_v his_o glory_n for_o thereby_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o weakness_n of_o god_n be_v strong_a than_o the_o strength_n of_o satan_n again_o this_o world_n be_v a_o place_n appoint_v by_o he_o to_o be_v blot_v out_o and_o according_o it_o be_v to_o man_n a_o place_n of_o unrest_n of_o fight_v of_o strive_v his_o rest_n be_v above_o his_o victory_n be_v above_o therefore_o god_n set_v we_o not_o here_o in_o a_o steady_a victorious_a and_o glorious_a grace_n lest_o with_o peter_n we_o shall_v desire_v to_o build_v tabernacle_n here_o where_o the_o foundation_n must_v be_v remoove_v but_o he_o keep_v rest_n triumph_n and_o glory_n for_o we_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v wherein_o be_v the_o perfect_a rest_n even_o the_o pure_a sabbath_n of_o god_n then_o shall_v it_o apparent_o be_v his_o glory_n that_o he_o have_v make_v so_o small_a a_o seed_n of_o grace_n to_o bring_v forth_o such_o a_o harvest_n of_o glory_n and_o that_o with_o manna_n which_o to_o carnal_a man_n seem_v a_o light_a bread_n he_o bring_v man_n to_o canaan_n even_o the_o land_n of_o rest_n and_o happiness_n 6._o part._n now_o to_o return_v he_o some_o traffic_n for_o his_o observation_n three_o note_n and_o mark_n i_o will_v here_o set_v upon_o carnal_a wise_a man_n each_o of_o they_o be_v a_o imperfection_n which_o spoil_v their_o discourse_v of_o divinity_n and_o christ_n the_o chief_a part_n thereof_o even_o the_o ignorance_n of_o three_o thing_n which_o few_o of_o they_o have_v the_o knowledge_n to_o see_v consider_v and_o confess_v yet_o be_v they_o certain_o true_a and_o true_o show_v in_o the_o that_o to_o govern_v a_o great_a world_n whereof_o he_o be_v not_o worthy_a as_o he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o party_n he_o be_v so_o extreme_o vicious_a and_o corrupt_a and_o most_o creature_n be_v more_o orderly_a than_o himself_o 7._o part._n again_o another_o folly_n and_o blindness_n of_o they_o be_v that_o they_o see_v not_o the_o resurrection_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o end_n of_o man_n body_n shall_v be_v this_o present_a life_n for_o than_o may_v we_o say_v with_o these_o author_n that_o there_o may_v be_v some_o pleasure_n take_v above_o in_o the_o torment_n here_o below_o for_o what_o general_o do_v we_o see_v here_o but_o misery_n pain_n oppression_n diverse_a torture_n diverse_a death_n diverse_a heart-breaking_n care_v within_o and_o labour_n without_o a_o few_o only_a live_n in_o some_o ease_n of_o which_o again_o but_o a_o few_o escape_v a_o great_a taste_n of_o misery_n indeed_o be_v there_o no_o life_n but_o this_o we_o may_v very_o think_v that_o man_n be_v appoint_v to_o be_v bear_v to_o live_v and_o die_v in_o a_o jail_n wherein_o he_o be_v tie_v and_o bind_v up_o to_o misery_n and_o that_o this_o world_n be_v set_v forth_o for_o a_o spectacle_n of_o torment_n &_o massacre_n wherein_o we_o shall_v infinite_o wrong_v the_o infinite_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o all_o thing_n but_o as_o we_o have_v learn_v of_o god_n our_o own_o fall_n and_o present_a misery_n so_o withal_o we_o have_v learn_v a_o remedy_n for_o our_o fall_n and_o a_o way_n out_o of_o this_o misery_n into_o felicity_n we_o know_v and_o believe_v that_o the_o body_n die_v return_n into_o that_o which_o it_o be_v and_o that_o be_v dust_n and_o if_o be_v dust_n at_o first_o it_o be_v then_o quicken_v we_o know_v he_o that_o quicken_v dust_n at_o first_o can_v quicken_v dust_n at_o last_o he_o be_v the_o same_o for_o ever_o yea_o we_o know_v that_o small_a portion_n of_o his_o spirit_n which_o be_v in_o we_o be_v abundant_o able_a to_o perform_v it_o we_o doubt_v not_o but_o a_o little_a power_n include_v in_o a_o acorne_n be_v able_a to_o raise_v out_o of_o it_o a_o mighty_a oak_n because_o we_o see_v it_o and_o we_o may_v as_o easy_o believe_v that_o this_o spirit_n which_o now_o show_v a_o far_o great_a power_n in_o our_o sanctification_n may_v also_o raise_v out_o of_o our_o dust_n a_o heavenly_a and_o glorious_a body_n to_o he_o that_o have_v do_v so_o great_a work_n daily_o see_v there_o want_v no_o power_n to_o do_v as_o great_a thing_n yet_o unseen_a for_o god_n have_v not_o bound_v his_o power_n by_o his_o be_v he_o who_o have_v both_o will_v it_o and_o show_v it_o and_o god_n the_o author_n of_o these_o and_o all_o other_o good_a gift_n establish_v we_o which_o belong_v to_o he_o in_o the_o knowledge_n and_o embracement_n of_o this_o his_o save_a truth_n that_o live_v and_o die_v therein_o we_o may_v pass_v from_o this_o life_n which_o be_v worse_o than_o death_n unto_o a_o true_a life_n of_o bliss_n and_o happiness_n part._n 8._o another_o thing_n which_o flesh_n and_o blood_n have_v not_o full_o discover_v and_o which_o have_v be_v the_o author_n both_o of_o our_o fall_n and_o misery_n and_o impli_v a_o necessity_n of_o a_o preserver_n and_o redeemer_n be_v a_o state_n body_z politic_a and_o kingdom_n of_o evil_a spirit_n which_o effectual_a in_o craft_n mighty_a in_o power_n diligent_a in_o watchfulness_n and_o have_v all_o these_o their_o power_n employ_v and_o move_v by_o a_o endless_a and_o great_a malice_n towards_o mankind_n go_v still_o about_o seek_v the_o mischief_n and_o ruin_n of_o weak_a &_o silly_a man_n unable_a of_o himself_o to_o stand_v against_o this_o leviathan_n and_o therefore_o necessary_o want_v the_o help_n of_o a_o preserver_n and_o doctrine_n of_o his_o servant_n the_o apostle_n have_v describe_v they_o by_o name_n have_v show_v their_o nature_n have_v set_v forth_o their_o malice_n and_o rage_n against_o man_n which_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o man_n and_o continue_v from_o thence_o increase_v now_o towards_o the_o last_o of_o man_n he_o have_v also_o set_v forth_o a_o remedy_n against_o all_o his_o hurt_n and_o power_n proud_a &_o malicious_a prince_n that_o by_o that_o very_a weak_a creature_n which_o no_o way_n heretofore_o be_v not_o able_a to_o match_v with_o he_o god_n be_v able_a to_o break_v his_o head_n if_o
