better_a welcome_n unto_o we_o when_o god_n shall_v be_v please_v in_o mercy_n to_o vouchsave_o we_o the_o same_o by_o how_o much_o the_o burden_n that_o we_o bear_v and_o the_o pain_n we_o endure_v be_v indeed_o grievous_a and_o as_o we_o may_v say_v and_o shall_v find_v it_o too_o without_o grace_n and_o assistance_n from_o god_n unbeareable_a in_o these_o outward_a matter_n the_o more_o that_o be_v promise_v the_o better_a we_o like_v and_o the_o more_o great_a and_o faithful_a the_o party_n be_v that_o give_v we_o his_o word_n the_o more_o constant_o we_o assure_v ourselves_o but_o if_o together_o with_o word_n we_o find_v undeceiveable_a accomplishment_n then_o be_v our_o joy_n as_o a_o man_n may_v say_v at_o the_o top_n and_o full_a mark_v these_o thing_n here_o and_o then_o we_o shall_v see_v our_o comfort_n increase_v where_o be_v more_o bountiful_a promise_n of_o truth_n and_o life_n then_o those_o that_o every_o where_o sound_a in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n do_v not_o they_o reach_v to_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n present_a and_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v especial_o who_o more_o excellent_a than_o the_o lord_n that_o have_v make_v they_o who_o more_o great_a for_o power_n who_o more_o certain_a for_o good_a will_n who_o more_o assure_a for_o fastness_n and_o fidelity_n than_o he_o shall_v not_o all_o these_o raise_v up_o our_o spirit_n in_o ourselves_o that_o be_v fall_v down_o within_o we_o and_o even_o as_o it_o be_v cause_v we_o in_o hope_n or_o under_o hope_n to_o believe_v against_o hope_n which_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o perceive_v in_o ourselves_o and_o persuade_v our_o heart_n of_o let_v we_o a_o little_a insist_v or_o stand_v upon_o the_o word_n he_o say_v and_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o who_o speak_v it_o he_o that_o either_o can_v or_o will_v not_o perform_v it_o no_o very_o but_o christ_n god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n consist_v yet_o notwithstanding_o of_o two_o several_a and_o distinct_a nature_n the_o godhead_n and_o the_o manhood_n have_v deliver_v it_o that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v well_o assure_v as_o of_o his_o eternal_a power_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o godhead_n so_o of_o his_o infinite_a good_a will_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o humanity_n and_o in_o both_o of_o they_o inseparable_o join_v together_o from_o the_o time_n of_o his_o conception_n persuade_v our_o heart_n for_o the_o faithful_a accomplishment_n of_o this_o most_o gracious_a and_o sweet_a promise_n and_o we_o must_v needs_o refer_v it_o to_o and_o understand_v it_o of_o his_o whole_a person_n not_o only_o because_o in_o he_o consist_v the_o fullness_n of_o all_o goodness_n as_o we_o have_v hear_v yea_o even_o the_o very_a fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n bodily_a but_o also_o because_o that_o deliver_v this_o as_o the_o king_n priest_n and_o prophet_n of_o his_o church_n and_o not_o accomplish_v any_o of_o these_o office_n in_o either_o of_o his_o distinct_a nature_n several_o but_o in_o his_o whole_a person_n he_o must_v in_o his_o person_n needs_o both_o deliver_v this_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a promise_n and_o also_o effectual_o perform_v the_o same_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o saythfull_a people_n the_o word_n refresh_v be_v metaphorical_a and_o well_o answer_v indeed_o the_o term_n before_o go_v of_o labour_v and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v a_o man_n that_o labour_v sore_a will_v be_v glad_a of_o ease_n who_o doubt_v of_o that_o the_o party_n that_o have_v a_o sore_a burden_n on_o his_o back_n will_v willing_o be_v light_v nature_n reason_n experience_n &_o all_o teach_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o how_o much_o more_o than_o he_o that_o be_v press_v if_o not_o depress_v with_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n with_o the_o behold_n of_o his_o own_o infirmity_n with_o the_o feel_n and_o fear_n of_o god_n wrath_n against_o he_o for_o the_o same_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o find_v refresh_v ease_n and_o comfort_n which_o if_o it_o be_v offer_v and_o mean_v as_o here_o it_o be_v be_v excellent_a but_o if_o it_o be_v receyve_v and_o feel_v be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o notable_a by_o how_o much_o the_o soul_n be_v better_a than_o the_o body_n &_o the_o grief_n of_o the_o one_o more_o great_a than_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v holpen_v and_o cure_v the_o mercy_n minister_v and_o make_v effectual_a and_o the_o comfort_n flow_v therefrom_o far_o surpass_v all_o wherein_o our_o saviour_n christ_n sure_o offer_v no_o more_o than_o what_o he_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v nay_o then_o that_o which_o he_o will_v accomplish_v indeed_o so_o that_o we_o labour_v by_o that_o eye_n of_o faith_n which_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o vouchsave_o unto_o we_o and_o that_o hand_n of_o faith_n that_o he_o have_v bestow_v upon_o we_o steadfast_o to_o look_v upon_o it_o to_o lay_v hold_n of_o it_o and_o to_o apply_v it_o to_o our_o own_o soul_n because_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n though_o most_o holy_a heavenly_a &_o excellent_a in_o themselves_o yet_o without_o faith_n to_o feel_v and_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o our_o heart_n they_o be_v as_o in_o regard_n of_o man_n as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o at_o all_o and_o yet_o to_o say_v truth_n and_o that_o indeed_o for_o the_o further_o enlarge_n of_o the_o comfort_n of_o distress_a conscience_n we_o be_v to_o mark_v that_o the_o word_n signify_v much_o more_o than_o refresh_v though_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o that_o consider_v as_o it_o come_v from_o god_n or_o in_o it_o own_o self_n be_v a_o very_a singular_a grace_n and_o it_o shall_v both_o appear_v and_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o gracious_a by_o how_o much_o all_o and_o every_o one_o of_o we_o be_v unworthy_a of_o it_o yea_o most_o worthy_a of_o all_o discomfort_n &_o judgement_n both_o for_o the_o time_n present_a and_o all_o continuance_n but_o to_o the_o word_n i_o say_v it_o be_v compound_v of_o a_o preposition_n or_o particle_n and_o a_o verb_n that_o signify_v to_o finish_v end_n or_o cease_v from_o our_o saviour_n note_v not_o only_a refresh_n from_o the_o pain_n and_o pang_n that_o we_o endure_v but_o put_v a_o end_n unto_o all_o trouble_n and_o sorrow_n that_o be_v upon_o we_o whether_o they_o be_v outward_a or_o inward_a which_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v principal_o yea_o only_a and_o most_o absolute_o perform_v in_o the_o life_n that_o be_v to_o be_v reveil_v according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o xiiii_o of_o the_o revelation_n bless_a be_v the_o dead_a that_o dye_n in_o the_o lord_n for_o they_o cease_v from_o their_o labour_n and_o their_o work_n follow_v they_o yet_o it_o be_v in_o manner_n and_o measure_n begin_v here_o &_o by_o faith_n we_o steadfast_o believe_v the_o full_a fruition_n of_o it_o and_o through_o hope_n hold_v fast_o and_o with_o patience_n look_v for_o the_o continual_a enjoy_n thereof_o and_o no_o doubt_n of_o it_o our_o saviour_n have_v use_v so_o significant_a a_o word_n that_o he_o may_v the_o better_o provide_v for_o and_o propound_v comfort_n to_o the_o wound_a spirit_n which_o as_o it_o be_v in_o anguish_n and_o grief_n for_o the_o present_a distress_n so_o do_v it_o trouble_n and_o torment_v itself_o with_o this_o temptation_n that_o it_o see_v no_o end_n of_o the_o misery_n and_o calamity_n thereof_o but_o be_v not_o dismay_v say_v christ_n for_o the_o time_n shall_v come_v faith_n christ_n wherein_o i_o will_v wipe_v all_o tear_n from_o your_o eye_n all_o grief_n from_o your_o heart_n all_o sorrow_n from_o your_o soul_n and_o not_o only_o stay_v there_o but_o give_v you_o perpetual_a rest_n with_o they_o that_o be_v sanctify_v and_o save_v through_o i_o hitherto_o we_o have_v tranailed_a and_o i_o trust_v not_o unprofitable_o chief_o in_o the_o exposition_n of_o the_o word_n interlace_v now_o and_o then_o some_o thing_n of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n no_o whit_n i_o be_o sure_a strange_a from_o the_o meaning_n of_o christ_n or_o improper_a or_o unfit_a for_o this_o present_a exercise_n and_o assembly_n now_o it_o remain_v that_o before_o we_o go_v any_o further_a in_o the_o word_n of_o our_o text_n we_o do_v from_o this_o verse_n gather_v some_o such_o good_a lesson_n as_o it_o do_v afford_v we_o for_o doctrine_n or_o consolation_n because_o this_o indeed_o may_v most_o proper_o be_v call_v the_o life_n of_o the_o word_n when_o man_n learn_v from_o the_o same_o good_a instruction_n and_o endeavour_n to_o make_v good_a and_o profitable_a use_n thereof_o the_o first_o point_n of_o doctrine_n issue_v out_o of_o this_o text_n be_v this_o that_o true_a and_o sound_a comfort_n for_o a_o afflict_a conscience_n be_v not_o
law_n and_o under_o the_o gospel_n all_o lead_v we_o not_o only_o unto_o christ_n but_o unto_o all_o those_o sweet_a grace_n and_o heavenly_a comfort_n that_o we_o receive_v from_o he_o to_o omit_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v for_o substance_n and_o matter_n the_o same_o to_o the_o father_n that_o we_o be_v to_o we_o and_o to_o come_v to_o they_o of_o the_o new_a testament_n yea_o and_o but_o to_o touch_v one_o of_o they_o only_o namely_o the_o lord_n supper_n what_o wonderful_a and_o unspeakable_a comfort_n do_v god_n in_o christ_n offer_v unto_o we_o therein_o to_o say_v nothing_o of_o those_o that_o we_o receive_v there_o the_o pledge_n of_o his_o death_n and_o blood_n shed_v and_o of_o all_o the_o grace_n that_o flow_v unto_o we_o therefrom_o as_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n sanctify_a use_n of_o the_o creature_n reconciliation_n to_o god_n and_o sundry_a such_o like_a what_o a_o marvellous_a mercy_n be_v this_o that_o under_o those_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n he_o shall_v seal_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n not_o only_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n we_o have_v from_o he_o to_o die_v the_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o live_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n through_o his_o power_n but_o also_o the_o heavenly_a comfort_n that_o he_o communicate_v unto_o we_o bread_n no_o more_o effectual_o or_o lively_o strengthen_v our_o heart_n nor_o wine_n more_o effectual_o make_v we_o to_o be_v of_o cheerful_a spirit_n than_o christ_n partake_v of_o by_o faith_n fill_v we_o with_o all_o manner_n of_o heavenly_a and_o holy_a joy_n and_o by_o argument_n take_v from_o privation_n if_o i_o may_v so_o say_v we_o may_v prove_v this_o point_n the_o comfort_n that_o we_o speak_v of_o be_v no_o where_o else_o to_o be_v sound_a therefore_o it_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v in_o he_o alone_o if_o we_o will_v look_v to_o angel_n and_o saint_n depart_v out_o of_o this_o life_n there_o be_v a_o double_a exception_n against_o they_o for_o first_o we_o be_v uncertain_a of_o their_o good_a will_n and_o sound_v affection_n towards_o we_o as_o in_o this_o behalf_n then_o we_o be_v sure_o they_o can_v afford_v we_o that_o we_o desire_v as_o who_o neither_o have_v that_o power_n in_o themselves_o because_o it_o proper_o &_o only_o belong_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o beside_o be_v sunder_v so_o far_o from_o we_o in_o respect_n of_o distance_n of_o place_n that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o stretch_v out_o their_o aid_n though_o they_o can_v help_v as_o for_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o creature_n they_o be_v as_o far_o unable_a and_o weak_a for_o this_o work_n as_o the_o other_o if_o not_o more_o the_o divelles_n and_o damn_v spirit_n will_v rather_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o torment_v we_o then_o yield_v any_o consolation_n man_n and_o woman_n that_o live_v with_o we_o in_o the_o world_n be_v infirm_a and_o stand_v in_o need_n as_o we_o ourselves_o and_o not_o able_a in_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o distress_n to_o comfort_v themselves_o much_o less_o we_o unreasonable_a creature_n be_v taint_v with_o our_o sin_n and_o since_o the_o wicked_a enjoy_v they_o in_o great_a portion_n than_o we_o can_v yield_v consolation_n our_o own_o thing_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o own_o power_n as_o our_o wife_n our_o child_n and_o friend_n either_o in_o hard_a heartedness_n against_o we_o will_v become_v miserable_a comforter_n unto_o we_o as_o job_n wife_n and_o friend_n be_v all_o the_o sort_n of_o they_o or_o else_o when_o we_o shall_v consider_v what_o injury_n and_o indignity_n we_o have_v offer_v they_o will_v increase_v our_o sorrow_n and_o the_o like_a may_v we_o say_v of_o our_o health_n wealth_n strength_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v abuse_v will_v cast_v down_o rather_o then_o comfort_n but_o whither_o be_o i_o carry_v in_o confirmation_n of_o this_o point_n it_o be_v time_n as_o i_o take_v it_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o so_o to_o proceed_v to_o the_o handle_n and_o hear_v of_o some_o other_o doctrine_n we_o may_v see_v by_o it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v in_o a_o clear_a &_o true_a look_a glass_n the_o miserable_a estate_n and_o woeful_a condition_n of_o all_o in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v without_o the_o knowledge_n and_o feel_n of_o christ_n i_o say_v both_o knowledge_n and_o feeling_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o join_v they_o both_o together_o for_o they_o can_v be_v sunder_v no_o more_o than_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n because_o as_o all_o without_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o be_v under_o condemnation_n so_o many_o that_o know_v he_o &_o yet_o feel_v he_o not_o in_o faith_n and_o obedience_n shall_v certain_o perish_v for_o if_o that_o be_v true_a which_o christ_n himself_o say_v joh._n 17._o this_o be_v life_n eternal_a to_o know_v thou_o to_o be_v the_o only_a true_a god_n and_o he_o who_o thou_o have_v send_v jesus_n christ_n then_o this_o by_o the_o contrary_n must_v needs_o be_v true_a also_o that_o yet_o obstinate_o deny_v and_o refuse_v the_o person_n of_o the_o son_n but_o also_o of_o many_o thousand_o of_o christian_n whereof_o some_o as_o heretic_n deny_v his_o nature_n as_o the_o anabaptiste_n who_o deny_v his_o humanity_n and_o our_o popish_a adversary_n deface_v his_o office_n of_o kingdom_n in_o erect_v and_o exercise_v another_o government_n they_o he_o have_v prescribe_v of_o priesthood_n in_o place_v their_o daily_a unbloody_a sacrifice_n in_o stead_n of_o it_o of_o prophecy_n in_o bring_v in_o new_a docirine_n and_o establish_v tradition_n and_o other_o such_o trash_n and_o trumpery_n other_o some_o again_o know_v he_o but_o deny_v he_o through_o loose_a and_o lewd_a life_n of_o who_o we_o may_v say_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v of_o some_o other_o not_o much_o unlike_o they_o that_o when_o they_o know_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n they_o deny_v it_o notwithstanding_o in_o their_o deed_n and_o of_o who_o also_o we_o may_v say_v though_o it_o be_v to_o their_o terror_n as_o christ_n say_v luk._n 12._o he_o that_o know_v the_o will_n of_o his_o master_n and_o do_v it_o not_o shall_v be_v beat_v with_o many_o stripe_n and_o yet_o let_v no_o man_n think_v this_o a_o hard_a or_o hasty_a judgement_n for_o here_o we_o speak_v not_o the_o word_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n or_o mouth_n but_o of_o god_n and_o may_v in_o some_o measure_n in_o this_o behalf_n say_v even_o as_o christ_n himself_o say_v joh._n 12._o i_o judge_v no_o man_n but_o there_o be_v one_o that_o judge_v such_o even_o the_o word_n that_o he_o have_v speak_v it_o shall_v judge_v they_o according_a to_o which_o when_o we_o judge_v we_o can_v but_o judge_v righteous_a judgement_n because_o it_o be_v all_o and_o only_a truth_n it_o can_v give_v no_o sentence_n save_o according_a to_o the_o same_o but_o to_o draw_v it_o more_o near_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n and_o occasion_n we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o so_o many_o distress_a spirit_n lie_v as_o it_o be_v broil_v in_o the_o flame_n &_o fire_n of_o a_o trouble_a and_o disquiet_v he_o be_v sure_o he_o either_o they_o know_v not_o christ_n and_o the_o power_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n and_o then_o no_o marvel_n though_o they_o boil_v and_o broil_v indeed_o when_o they_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o sting_n of_o conscience_n for_o sin_n and_o condemnation_n therefore_o for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v otherwise_o see_v there_o be_v neither_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n nor_o overcome_v of_o condemnation_n nor_o any_o comfortable_a &_o continual_a feel_n of_o any_o favour_n but_o by_o he_o or_o else_o they_o feel_v he_o not_o with_o his_o force_n and_o effect_v that_o way_n though_o they_o know_v their_o own_o sin_n the_o punishment_n due_a unto_o they_o therefore_o with_o the_o manifold_a unworthyness_n they_o find_v in_o themselves_o hinder_v they_o from_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n as_o for_o the_o former_a sort_n i_o will_v wish_v they_o careful_o &_o painful_o to_o labour_v
second_o be_v a_o weighty_a reason_n join_v to_o those_o exhortation_n or_o commandment_n the_o better_a both_o to_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o christ_n have_v say_v and_o also_o the_o more_o effectual_o to_o persuade_v we_o to_o walk_v in_o the_o obedience_n and_o practice_v thereof_o and_o this_o reason_n be_v comprehend_v vers_fw-la 30._o true_a it_o be_v indeed_o that_o the_o reason_n do_v more_o special_o concern_v the_o latter_a exhortation_n or_o commandment_n as_o we_o shall_v show_v hereafter_o if_o god_n will_n howbeit_o it_o may_v not_o improper_o also_o in_o some_o sort_n and_o sense_n be_v apply_v and_o refer_v unto_o the_o first_o but_o because_o this_o be_v not_o a_o point_n great_o material_a now_o we_o will_v let_v it_o pass_v and_o proceed_v to_o more_o necessary_a matter_n now_o concern_v the_o exhortation_n or_o commandment_n they_o be_v according_a to_o the_o number_n of_o the_o verse_n in_o which_o they_o be_v contain_v two_o and_o yet_o if_o i_o be_v not_o deceive_v both_o of_o they_o tend_v to_o one_o end_n namely_o by_o call_v man_n to_o come_v unto_o christ_n and_o to_o learn_v of_o he_o to_o minister_v comfort_n of_o conscience_n to_o they_o that_o be_v heavy_a heart_a and_o yet_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o they_o be_v needle_n tautology_n or_o my_o repetition_n but_o serve_v as_o to_o express_v christ_n singular_a love_n towards_o afflict_a person_n he_o urge_v they_o as_o we_o see_v again_o and_o again_o so_o to_o let_v we_o understand_v in_o the_o double_n and_o treble_v of_o these_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a exhortation_n or_o commandment_n that_o it_o be_v no_o easy_a thing_n to_o comfort_v a_o wound_a spirit_n and_o that_o a_o break_a and_o trouble_a heart_n do_v not_o by_o and_o by_o though_o glad_o it_o will_v admit_v and_o recelue_v comfort_n for_o if_o that_o be_v so_o one_o exhortation_n commandment_n call_v or_o promise_n will_v suffice_v but_o rather_o that_o even_o for_o their_o mind_n that_o be_v true_a in_o they_o that_o be_v say_v in_o the_o prophet_n jeremiah_n and_o be_v repeat_v in_o this_o evangelist_n chap._n 2_o rahel_n weep_v for_o her_o child_n and_o will_v not_o be_v comfort_v because_o they_o be_v not_o and_o yet_o further_o between_o these_o two_o exhortation_n or_o commandment_n i_o make_v this_o difference_n that_o in_o the_o first_o he_o call_v we_o simple_o without_o any_o other_o respect_n than_o of_o our_o own_o misery_n and_o his_o mercy_n to_o come_v unto_o he_o for_o relief_n and_o in_o the_o other_o he_o call_v on_o we_o or_o command_v we_o to_o learn_v of_o he_o and_o to_o profit_v by_o our_o come_n and_o not_o to_o be_v as_o bad_a scholar_n that_o have_v very_o good_a teacher_n or_o master_n and_o yet_o learn_v little_a or_o nothing_o from_o they_o and_o we_o be_v further_a to_o mark_v that_o in_o delivery_n of_o these_o exhortation_n or_o commandment_n christ_n observe_v this_o order_n first_o he_o put_v down_o the_o exhortation_n or_o commandment_n itself_o as_o ver_fw-la 28_o come_v unto_o i_o ally_n etc._n etc._n &_o ver_fw-la 29._o take_v my_o yoke_n upon_o you_o etc._n etc._n and_o then_o add_v promise_n full_a of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n as_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o in_o the_o end_n of_o vers_n 28._o and_o again_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n the_o last_o word_n of_o verse_n 29._o assure_v we_o that_o come_n at_o his_o call_n we_o shall_v have_v that_o in_o great_a measure_n and_o plenty_n bestow_v upon_o we_o that_o shall_v ease_v our_o smart_n but_o all_o these_o thing_n with_o many_o other_o more_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o plain_o and_o understand_v more_o full_o in_o the_o particular_a exposition_n of_o the_o word_n themselves_o as_o they_o lie_v in_o the_o text_n and_o in_o the_o observation_n of_o doctrine_n arise_v out_o of_o they_o to_o they_o therefore_o we_o come_v verse_n 28._o it_o be_v say_v come_v unto_o i_o in_o this_o verse_n two_o thing_n contain_v first_o the_o exhortation_n or_o commandment_n itself_o in_o these_o word_n come_v unto_o i_o etc._n etc._n second_o a_o promise_n adjoin_v as_o for_o our_o great_a encouragement_n to_o well_o do_v so_o for_o the_o better_a assurance_n of_o it_o in_o our_o heart_n in_o these_o word_n and_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o or_o make_v you_o to_o rest_n and_o find_v ease_n in_o the_o exhortation_n or_o commandment_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v the_o person_n exhort_v or_o command_v which_o be_v christ_n comfortable_o say_v come_v unto_o i_o and_o the_o person_n exhort_v or_o command_v in_o these_o word_n all_o you_o that_o labour_n etc._n etc._n who_o be_v describe_v by_o adjunct_n or_o attribute_n set_v out_o their_o miserable_a estate_n and_o they_o be_v two_o to_o wit_n labour_v and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v and_o indeed_o the_o promise_n follow_v respect_v also_o these_o two_o person_n that_o be_v to_o say_v christ_n person_n promise_v to_o refresh_v and_o the_o labour_a or_o heavy_a lade_v who_o be_v to_o be_v refresh_v the_o word_n come_v whether_o it_o be_v of_o exhort_v or_o command_v do_v not_o comprehend_v in_o it_o either_o readiness_n willingness_n or_o power_n of_o they_o that_o be_v call_v as_o of_o themselves_o as_o the_o pelagian_o in_o former_a time_n suppose_v and_o our_o popish_a adversary_n have_v dream_v of_o late_a because_o we_o know_v the_o scripture_n say_v it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o we_o both_o the_o will_n and_o the_o deed_n according_a to_o his_o good_a pleasure_n and_o we_o believe_v that_o to_o be_v true_a that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n himself_o testify_v say_v no_o man_n can_v come_v unto_o i_o unless_o the_o father_n draw_v he_o but_o rather_o the_o singular_a care_n and_o love_n of_o the_o caller_n and_o that_o not_o so_o much_o for_o his_o own_o glory_n who_o in_o the_o death_n and_o destruction_n of_o man_n can_v get_v &_o will_v get_v himself_o a_o name_n as_o for_o our_o good_a who_o when_o we_o think_v no_o such_o thing_n no_o nor_o of_o our_o own_o good_a neither_o be_v distress_v in_o spirit_n for_o then_o common_o we_o be_v either_o dull_a and_o heavy_a heart_a or_o else_o through_o fear_n be_v grievous_o cast_v down_o and_o disquiet_v in_o ourselves_o do_v yet_o notwithstanding_o call_v upon_o we_o and_o to_o we_o &_o will_v we_o to_o go_v or_o come_v not_o to_o other_o for_o than_o we_o may_v imagine_v either_o that_o he_o have_v no_o power_n or_o will_v in_o himself_o or_o that_o he_o mean_v to_o shift_v we_o off_o &_o beside_o they_o either_o can_v or_o will_v not_o yield_v we_o relief_n if_o we_o shall_v repair_v unto_o they_o but_o unto_o himself_o yea_o to_o himself_o alone_o and_o no_o other_o with_o he_o for_o so_o much_o do_v i_o take_v these_o word_n unto_o i_o to_o import_v and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n indeed_o both_o place_n of_o scripture_n and_o reason_n draw_v from_o religion_n do_v plain_o prove_v in_o the_o xiiii_o of_o hosea_n the_o lord_n by_o the_o prophet_n speak_v thus_o unto_o the_o people_n o_o israel_n return_n unto_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n as_o though_o he_o shall_v say_v to_o he_o only_o and_o to_o none_o other_o beside_o or_o with_o he_o to_o the_o same_o end_n yea_o and_o worthy_a to_o be_v note_v as_o serve_v also_o for_o confirmation_n and_o exposition_n of_o all_o the_o word_n of_o this_o very_a verse_n tend_v that_o which_o christ_n himself_o say_v isaiah_n 55._o which_o no_o man_n doubt_v to_o be_v a_o evident_a prophecy_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o grace_n that_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o he_o if_o with_o a_o lively_a and_o steadfast_a faith_n we_o labour_v to_o lay_v hold_n of_o he_o incline_v your_o care_n &_o come_v unto_o i_o hear_v and_o your_o soul_n shall_v live_v &_o i_o will_v make_v a_o everlasting_a covenant_n with_o you_o even_o the_o sure_a mercy_n of_o david_n and_o so_o much_o indeed_o must_v christ_n word_n import_v both_o there_o and_o here_o or_o else_o we_o shall_v see_v a_o more_o dangerous_a consequence_n than_o we_o think_v of_o for_o if_o any_o be_v to_o be_v respect_v beside_o he_o or_o join_v with_o he_o in_o that_o work_n of_o spiritual_a joy_n then_o be_v he_o not_o god_n all-sufficient_a because_o if_o any_o be_v join_v with_o he_o he_o be_v not_o sufficient_a of_o himself_o and_o if_o he_o be_v not_o the_o god_n of_o all_o comfort_n as_o well_o as_o the_o father_n of_o mercy_n he_o be_v not_o god_n indeed_o and_o so_o our_o faith_n &_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o word_n or_o christian_a religion_n shall_v be_v shake_v beside_o if_o it_o be_v so_o
no_o eye_n have_v see_v no_o ear_n have_v hear_v no_o heart_n can_v conceive_v nor_o tongue_n can_v utter_v but_o by_o they_o so_o well_o sort_v with_o our_o nature_n to_o give_v we_o some_o sight_n smack_n or_o taste_v of_o they_o and_o even_o herein_o also_o appear_v christ_n love_n that_o he_o be_v please_v to_o stoop_v down_o so_o low_a unto_o we_o and_o in_o such_o base_a term_n to_o express_v unto_o we_o such_o excellent_a thing_n but_o yet_o let_v we_o a_o little_a more_o particular_o examine_v the_o word_n that_o word_n that_o be_v here_o term_a labour_n do_v not_o signify_v simple_o every_o labour_n but_o such_o a_o labour_n as_o be_v sore_o and_o have_v join_v with_o it_o toil_a of_o the_o body_n and_o moil_a of_o the_o mind_n with_o cark_n and_o care_n yea_o and_o weariness_n both_o of_o body_n and_o mind_n join_v with_o it_o as_o a_o effect_n flow_v from_o it_o and_o that_o cause_v some_o also_o to_o turn_v it_o thus_o come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a whatsoever_o it_o be_v we_o may_v see_v that_o christ_n mind_v by_o this_o metaphor_n to_o express_v this_o much_o unto_o we_o that_o distress_n of_o spirit_n upon_o what_o cause_n soever_o it_o arise_v and_o conflict_n of_o conscience_n be_v no_o small_a pain_n but_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a sorrow_n enter_v deep_a into_o the_o soul_n disquiet_v the_o spirit_n distemper_a the_o body_n and_o make_v all_o part_n and_o power_n unfit_a for_o all_o or_o any_o duty_n almost_o and_o this_o to_o be_v true_a the_o scripture_n elsewhere_o show_v it_o and_o namely_o prou._n 18._o where_o it_o say_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n may_v endure_v his_o infirmity_n but_o a_o wound_a spirit_n who_o shall_v bear_v it_o and_o our_o own_o experience_n can_v witness_v it_o if_o either_o we_o have_v be_v humble_v ourselves_o or_o have_v be_v acquaint_v with_o other_o man_n sorrow_n that_o way_n in_o who_o it_o have_v take_v away_o for_o the_o time_n sleep_n from_o the_o eye_n hear_v from_o the_o ear_n speech_n from_o the_o mouth_n appetite_n from_o the_o stomach_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o it_o have_v cause_v some_o to_o assay_v the_o finish_n of_o their_o pain_n as_o they_o suppose_v with_o a_o shameful_a &_o fearful_a end_n have_v it_o be_v accomplish_v which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v not_o speak_v here_o or_o propound_v elsewhere_o unto_o we_o in_o the_o word_n to_o discourage_v or_o oppress_v they_o that_o be_v in_o that_o combat_n but_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n to_o teach_v all_o man_n to_o cast_v away_o security_n and_o carelessness_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o instruct_v they_o that_o be_v so_o weak_a in_o themselves_o to_o rely_v upon_o he_o that_o be_v the_o god_n of_o their_o strength_n who_o be_v in_o they_o and_o with_o they_o and_o for_o they_o will_v doubtless_o make_v his_o strength_n and_o power_n to_o appear_v in_o their_o weakness_n that_o other_o word_n heavy_a lade_v be_v metaphorical_a also_o and_o translate_v from_o bodily_a burden_n unto_o spiritual_a that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n and_o iniquity_n which_o lie_v more_o hard_a upon_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n though_o worldly_a man_n feel_v they_o not_o than_o any_o outward_a do_v or_o can_v upon_o the_o body_n yea_o though_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v press_v therewithal_o unto_o death_n because_o that_o only_o reach_v unto_o the_o body_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o pain_n thereof_o the_o soul_n little_a or_o nothing_o touch_v nay_o it_o may_v be_v very_o cheerful_a and_o comfortable_a spiritual_o and_o so_o cause_v the_o soul_n almost_o to_o find_v no_o grief_n as_o in_o the_o martyr_n that_o have_v be_v so_o many_o way_n and_o so_o grievous_o torment_v may_v and_o do_v appear_v but_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v overclogged_a with_o sin_n and_o the_o sense_n thereof_o or_o of_o god_n anger_n against_o it_o for_o the_o same_o the_o very_a body_n be_v taint_v thereby_o with_o sundry_a sort_n of_o sickness_n and_o diverse_a kind_n of_o disease_n some_o recoverable_a and_o some_o unrecoverable_a and_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o much_o use_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o sin_n itself_o be_v compare_v unto_o a_o burden_n which_o may_v in_o part_n appear_v not_o only_o by_o this_o when_o the_o prophet_n call_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n that_o shall_v fall_v upon_o man_n for_o their_o sin_n burden_n that_o so_o there_o may_v be_v some_o proportion_n between_o the_o iniquity_n they_o have_v commit_v &_o the_o punishment_n that_o be_v execute_v upon_o they_o for_o it_o but_o also_o by_o a_o plain_a place_n of_o the_o prophet_n david_n in_o that_o eight_o &_o thirty_o psalm_n that_o we_o sing_v before_o this_o sermon_n when_o he_o say_v my_o iniquity_n be_v go_v over_o my_o head_n and_o as_o a_o weighty_a burden_n they_o be_v too_o heavy_a for_o i_o to_o bear_v by_o all_o which_o we_o may_v see_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o so_o slight_a or_o light_v a_o matter_n as_o man_n make_v it_o but_o a_o wonderful_a weight_n indeed_o whether_o we_o consider_v it_o in_o it_o own_o nature_n as_o be_v the_o fearful_a violation_n &_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n or_o god_n that_o be_v offend_v thereby_o who_o pure_a eye_n can_v behold_v that_o that_o be_v evil_a &_o his_o hand_n in_o justice_n be_v press_v and_o ready_a to_o strike_v or_o the_o danger_n &_o damage_n they_o pull_v upon_o themselves_o in_o body_n and_o in_o soul_n for_o this_o life_n present_a and_o for_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v as_o terror_n and_o fear_n of_o heart_n shame_n and_o confusion_n of_o face_n discredit_v among_o man_n special_o godly_a discord_n yea_o anarchy_n in_o kingdom_n common_a wealth_n and_o family_n and_o what_o not_o and_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o point_n well_o worth_a the_o wade_v into_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o grossness_n and_o corruption_n of_o the_o age_n wherein_o we_o live_v make_v so_o small_a or_o no_o conscience_n at_o all_o of_o sin_n and_o transgression_n be_v it_o not_o that_o we_o be_v to_o be_v occupy_v in_o some_o other_o point_n of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n howbeit_o this_o much_o we_o may_v say_v that_o as_o it_o argue_v small_a conscience_n of_o sin_n in_o man_n that_o mitigate_v &_o minse_v it_o so_o it_o minister_v small_a hope_n of_o comfort_n unto_o themselves_o or_o other_o of_o the_o happy_a recovery_n out_o of_o it_o for_o how_o be_v it_o likely_a that_o they_o shall_v be_v cure_v of_o a_o disease_n that_o either_o know_v it_o not_o or_o feel_v it_o not_o or_o take_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o deadly_a and_o dangerous_a as_o it_o be_v whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o tender_a conscience_n charge_v yea_o surcharge_v itself_o with_o more_o than_o it_o shall_v it_o may_v be_v &_o yet_o that_o can_v hardly_o be_v if_o man_n consider_v right_o the_o height_n and_o the_o haynousnes_n yea_o the_o infiniteness_n &_o innumerablenesse_n of_o their_o own_o sin_n general_a and_o particular_a though_o in_o that_o accusation_n it_o suffer_v much_o grief_n yea_o &_o plunge_v itself_o as_o it_o be_v into_o distrustfulnes_n be_v in_o more_o hope_n of_o a_o gracious_a recovery_n which_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o such_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n shall_v minister_v some_o comfort_n because_o sin_v feel_v be_v more_o likely_a by_o repentance_n to_o be_v cure_v and_o heal_v then_o that_o that_o man_n make_v not_o keep_v or_o account_v of_o but_o to_o let_v this_o point_n pass_v and_o to_o come_v to_o that_o that_o do_v more_o nighly_a concern_v our_o purpose_n at_o this_o present_a now_o there_o follow_v the_o last_o word_n of_o this_o 28._o verse_n and_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o and_o contain_v in_o they_o the_o second_o part_n thereof_o namely_o a_o sweet_a &_o comfortable_a promise_n for_o the_o better_a draw_v yea_o allure_a of_o we_o unto_o he_o that_o call_v we_o unto_o himself_o but_o yet_o for_o our_o spiritual_a good_a a_o thirsty_a body_n indeed_o will_v rejoice_v to_o hear_v though_o it_o be_v but_o of_o water_n and_o not_o of_o drink_n to_o slake_v the_o thirst_n withal_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o he_o know_v it_o and_o take_v it_o to_o be_v a_o mean_a to_o maintain_v life_n the_o tiding_n of_o ease_n and_o light_v of_o he_o in_o some_o sort_n of_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a burden_n to_o he_o that_o carry_v it_o be_v no_o doubt_n of_o it_o gladsome_a and_o joyful_a also_o because_o it_o be_v a_o toil_n and_o a_o moil_n a_o wearisomnes_n and_o weakness_n to_o body_n and_o mind_n to_o bear_v a_o weight_n yea_o though_o it_o be_v but_o small_a continual_o reason_n &_o our_o own_o experience_n teach_v we_o the_o truth_n hereof_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n but_o how_o much_o more_o shall_v this_o be_v find_v true_a as_o in_o
that_o be_v thus_o throw_v down_o and_o humble_v under_o god_n mighty_a hand_n for_o that_o be_v presumptuous_a against_o the_o lord_n and_o uncharitable_a towards_o man_n and_o another_o use_n may_v be_v make_v of_o this_o point_n as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o faithful_a themselves_o who_o mind_v too_o much_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o by_o mean_n there_o of_o misery_n and_o unworthiness_n in_o themselves_o &_o judgement_n from_o god_n against_o they_o for_o the_o same_o many_o time_n make_v their_o own_o mouth_n mean_n to_o express_v fearful_a thing_n against_o their_o own_o soul_n as_o for_o example_n no_o man_n in_o so_o woeful_a take_n as_o i_o i_o fear_v i_o be_o a_o castaway_n or_o else_o why_o shall_v i_o thus_o be_v torment_v and_o these_o thing_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o they_o deliver_v from_o a_o heart_n that_o feel_v as_o much_o as_o the_o mouth_n express_v howbeit_o i_o say_v what_o be_v thou_o that_o take_v the_o lord_n office_n into_o thy_o hand_n and_o deliver_v these_o hard_a and_o heavy_a thing_n and_o that_o not_o against_o other_o man_n which_o be_v indeed_o uncharitable_a but_o even_o thy_o own_o self_n which_o be_v unnatural_a tell_v i_o i_o pray_v thou_o may_v blindness_n so_o far_o prejudice_n man_n judgement_n that_o it_o shall_v hinder_v they_o from_o behold_v their_o own_o and_o other_o man_n state_n and_o shall_v it_o not_o obscure_v thy_o own_o also_o yea_o and_o that_o even_o concern_v thyself_o and_o touch_v thy_o own_o present_a state_n but_o further_o know_v this_o o_o man_n that_o sometime_o greatness_n and_o continuance_n of_o grief_n make_v the_o best_a of_o god_n saint_n to_o say_v as_o much_o against_o themselves_o as_o thou_o do_v and_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o be_v in_o never_o a_o whit_n the_o worse_a case_n david_n in_o the_o xxii_o psa_fw-la cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o and_o yet_o even_o they_o he_o be_v near_o unto_o god_n yea_o &_o dear_a unto_o he_o also_o or_o else_o he_o can_v not_o have_v call_v upon_o god_n and_o that_o in_o such_o particular_a manner_n apply_v he_o to_o himself_o as_o he_o do_v neither_o will_v the_o lord_n have_v so_o gracious_o grant_v he_o his_o request_n and_o why_o shall_v not_o this_o be_v thy_o state_n rather_o than_o the_o state_n of_o a_o damn_a or_o reprobate_v wretch_n to_o uphold_v thy_o heart_n thou_o have_v something_o even_o the_o sanctify_a example_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n but_o to_o depress_v thou_o so_o above_o measure_n thou_o have_v nothing_o but_o imagination_n and_o conceit_n either_o of_o that_o which_o be_v not_o in_o god_n or_o if_o it_o be_v be_v not_o in_o he_o to_o that_o end_n that_o thou_o suppose_v or_o else_o of_o that_o which_o be_v not_o in_o thyself_o or_o speak_v of_o themselves_o according_a to_o their_o present_a feeling_n either_o of_o sin_n in_o their_o soul_n or_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n against_o they_o therefore_o which_o many_o time_n may_v be_v more_o than_o be_v either_o meet_a or_o true_a &_o another_o what_o god_n be_v in_o his_o own_o nature_n &_o what_o he_o himself_o say_v of_o they_o god_n be_v exceed_o good_a &_o merciful_a and_o be_v not_o indeed_o bind_v to_o ratify_v every_o sentence_n of_o man_n mind_n or_o mouth_n which_o he_o utter_v either_o against_o his_o own_o soul_n or_o against_o other_o i_o hope_v no_o man_n judgement_n to_o ratify_v it_o in_o heaven_n than_o they_o on_o the_o earth_n bound_v according_a to_o his_o will_n and_o why_o shall_v it_o be_v otherwise_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o particular_a person_n have_v they_o better_a privilege_n than_o the_o whole_a church_n have_v if_o it_o be_v so_o let_v they_o produce_v a_o law_n not_o of_o the_o twelve_o table_n among_o the_o roman_n but_o of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n among_o the_o people_n of_o god_n or_o else_o there_o be_v no_o credit_n to_o be_v give_v o_o my_o brethren_n it_o fare_v in_o the_o disease_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o sickness_n of_o the_o body_n many_o a_o man_n yea_o skilful_a physician_n take_v they_o to_o be_v at_o death_n door_n when_o god_n give_v afterward_o long_a life_n on_o the_o other_o side_n some_o bless_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o think_v all_o be_v well_o when_o death_n sudden_o seize_v upon_o they_o &_o lead_v they_o to_o the_o grave_n and_o hell_n remember_v i_o beseech_v you_o what_o be_v say_v before_o out_o of_o the_o 28._o of_o the_o proverb_n bless_a be_v the_o man_n say_v the_o lord_n there_o that_o fear_v much_o continual_o this_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o we_o whensoever_o or_o wheresoever_o it_o please_v god_n to_o exercise_v we_o therewithal_o be_v a_o principal_a argument_n unto_o we_o that_o god_n will_v not_o have_v we_o perish_v with_o this_o wicked_a world_n he_o by_o this_o as_o by_o other_o mean_n through_o his_o grace_n make_v we_o able_a thus_o to_o judge_v ourselves_o and_o indeed_o to_o have_v such_o a_o fearful_a correct_v his_o judgement_n for_o sure_o that_o which_o he_o take_v to_o be_v bitter_a as_o gall_v or_o wormwood_n be_v by_o the_o lord_n himself_o and_o not_o by_o the_o voice_n of_o man_n to_o be_v proclaim_v to_o be_v sweet_a as_o honey_n or_o the_o honey_n comb_n the_o promise_n specify_v in_o the_o last_o word_n of_o this_o verse_n come_v now_o to_o be_v look_v into_o out_o of_o which_o gracious_a and_o sweet_a promise_n we_o may_v learn_v two_o thing_n one_o that_o the_o fullness_n of_o all_o spiritual_a joy_n and_o comfort_n be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o no_o where_o else_o which_o because_o it_o be_v the_o same_o that_o have_v be_v handle_v heretofore_o we_o will_v but_o only_o touch_v and_o put_v you_o in_o mind_n of_o it_o not_o stand_v upon_o it_o because_o it_o be_v do_v already_o and_o indeed_o though_o the_o point_n be_v excellent_a and_o will_v be_v handle_v again_o &_o again_o yet_o because_o the_o time_n pass_v away_o &_o we_o be_v to_o mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v and_o again_o i_o come_v not_o to_o call_v the_o righteous_a but_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n and_o most_o sweet_a be_v that_o in_o the_o three_o chap_v of_o the_o gospel_n according_a to_o s._n john_n god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o have_v give_v his_o only_o beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v
