matter_n of_o our_o vanity_n how_o mischievous_a must_v that_o needs_o be_v which_o turn_v our_o remedy_n into_o a_o mischief_n how_o great_a be_v my_o pride_n if_o when_o i_o prostrate_v myself_o meek_o and_o humble_o i_o often_o rise_v up_o again_o proud_a insolent_a and_o disdainful_a even_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o humility_n there_o may_v spring_v up_o a_o vanity_n of_o be_v humble_a and_o a_o inward_a pride_n may_v grow_v out_o of_o a_o conceit_n of_o my_o humility_n which_o be_v worse_o than_o a_o outward_a pride_n clothe_v with_o vanity_n for_o that_o when_o it_o hurt_v do_v spiritual_a delight_n with_o sensual_a pleasure_n and_o the_o recreation_n of_o the_o good_a with_o the_o pastime_n of_o the_o wicked_a this_o appear_v in_o that_o he_o do_v not_o count_v eternal_a glory_n for_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o those_o effect_n which_o the_o spirit_n itself_o produce_v in_o this_o life_n which_o be_v joy_n peace_n long-suffering_a etc._n etc._n as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v the_o spirit_n have_v two_o sort_n of_o fruit_n one_o for_o this_o life_n which_o be_v a_o internal_a glory_n and_o the_o other_o for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v which_o be_v both_o a_o external_n internal_a and_o supernal_a glory_n two_o fruit_n one_o of_o temporal_a peace_n upon_o earth_n and_o the_o other_o of_o eternal_a peace_n in_o heaven_n this_o question_n which_o sinner_n make_v to_o the_o righteous_a seem_v to_o correspond_v to_o that_o which_o st._n paul_n make_v to_o sinner_n when_o he_o ask_v they_o what_o fruit_n have_v you_o then_o in_o those_o thing_n whereof_o you_o be_v now_o ashamed_a and_o they_o if_o they_o will_v answer_v true_o can_v answer_v nothing_o but_o that_o grief_n misery_n and_o confusion_n have_v be_v the_o fruit_n of_o they_o but_o they_o answer_v only_o with_o another_o question_n say_v and_o you_o what_o fruit_n do_v you_o get_v by_o follow_v of_o virtue_n to_o which_o st._n paul_n answer_v not_o one_o fruit_n but_o be_v those_o common_a virtue_n we_o speak_v of_o in_o the_o second_o part_n but_o though_o they_o be_v like_a there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o they_o for_o this_o peace_n this_o chastity_n this_o charity_n this_o benignity_n etc._n etc._n be_v not_o altogether_o the_o same_o with_o those_o there_o speak_v of_o but_o these_o do_v presuppose_v those_o and_o these_o be_v a_o supreme_a habit_n which_o god_n give_v by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n whereby_o he_o raise_v facilitate_v perfect_v and_o crown_v those_o virtue_n which_o be_v there_o begin_v and_o bring_v they_o to_o a_o high_a and_o heroical_a perfection_n the_o reason_n upon_o which_o i_o ground_n myself_o be_v that_o those_o virtue_n though_o they_o be_v serviceable_a for_o the_o exercise_n of_o grace_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o call_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o virtue_n which_o conduce_v to_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o which_o we_o begin_v and_o proceed_v in_o the_o spiritual_a life_n but_o these_o fruit_n which_o st._n paul_n here_o mention_n be_v more_o than_o virtue_n they_o be_v gift_n and_o fruit_n which_o grow_v from_o the_o spirit_n and_o as_o a_o tree_n after_o have_v be_v dig_v about_o the_o owner_n which_o be_v the_o best_a of_o all_o his_o labour_n so_o also_o these_o twelve_o fruit_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v the_o best_a of_o the_o spiritual_a life_n and_o much_o more_o excellent_a than_o those_o virtue_n wherewith_o man_n begin_v and_o go_v on_o in_o it_o at_o the_o first_o and_o these_o grow_v from_o they_o into_o a_o fruit_n which_o by_o and_o through_o their_o mean_n the_o holy_a spirit_n ripen_v and_o make_v more_o fragrant_a more_o savoury_a and_o more_o substantial_a than_o all_o those_o virtue_n of_o the_o beginning_n we_o will_v go_v on_o discourse_v of_o these_o twelve_o fruit_n in_o the_o remain_a week_n of_o this_o spiritual_a year_n to_o the_o end_n that_o thou_o may_v rejoice_v in_o find_v that_o blessedness_n be_v not_o only_o the_o reward_n to_o the_o soul_n because_o they_o feed_v it_o with_o a_o worse_a nourishment_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o your_o fast_a say_v god_n your_o own_o will_n reign_v whereas_o the_o resign_v it_o up_o to_o my_o will_n ought_v to_o be_v the_o crown_n and_o honour_n of_o your_o fast._n this_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o abstinence_n than_o that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o gluttony_n but_o i_o will_v now_o say_v something_o of_o that_o of_o gluttony_n gluttony_n be_v a_o infamous_a vice_n that_o pollute_v and_o destroy_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n no_o less_o than_o sensuality_n dull_v and_o impatience_n by_o anger_n and_o fury_n by_o force_n and_o by_o revenge_n so_o in_o the_o spiritual_a warfare_n we_o must_v conquer_v by_o suffer_v and_o by_o humility_n for_o the_o combat_n here_o be_v to_o undergo_v pain_n and_o hardship_n to_o live_v and_o die_v with_o bearing_z and_o with_o patience_n this_o fruit_n be_v also_o necessary_a because_o by_o it_o the_o rest_n be_v preserve_v some_o saint_n as_o we_o see_v in_o the_o example_n that_o have_v be_v give_v pass_v on_o further_a and_o express_v more_o joy_n in_o suffering_n than_o in_o comfort_n though_o these_o come_v from_o the_o first_o cause_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v to_o say_v a_o disposition_n to_o receive_v and_o to_o hold_v it_o by_o the_o soul_n be_v be_v free_a from_o the_o guilt_n of_o any_o great_a sin_n for_o that_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o the_o divine_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n which_o give_v the_o soul_n light_n and_o strength_n to_o cast_v out_o sin_n rather_o than_o a_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o if_o a_o old_a decay_a and_o break_a house_n shall_v by_o his_o power_n not_o only_o be_v repair_v and_o strengthen_v and_o make_v up_o again_o in_o the_o same_o proportion_n grace_n and_o beauty_n it_o have_v at_o first_o but_o also_o be_v bring_v to_o a_o great_a perfection_n and_o enrich_v with_o more_o costly_a ornament_n and_o though_o it_o still_o leave_v in_o he_o the_o incitement_n and_o provocation_n to_o sin_n for_o that_o never_o cease_v nor_o do_v grace_n take_v it_o away_o yet_o it_o be_v as_o much_o weaken_a and_o disable_v as_o reason_n be_v in_o it_o before_o this_o goodness_n and_o sincerity_n the_o lord_n find_v in_o holy_a job_n and_o to_o give_v he_o a_o high_a praise_n indeed_o he_o say_v he_o be_v single_a and_o upright_a god_n by_o his_o grace_n have_v take_v from_o
