myself_o be_v then_o a_o scholar_n in_o the_o college_n that_o a_o student_n have_v a_o bed_n a_o table_n 4.10_o a_o stool_n and_o a_o candlestick_n to_o furnish_v his_o chamber_n mean_v necessary_a implement_n and_o provision_n shall_v attend_v diligent_o to_o his_o book_n and_o to_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o call_n as_o have_v so_o good_a encouragement_n and_o so_o have_v many_o do_v there_o very_o commendablie_o to_o the_o good_a example_n of_o other_o and_o the_o benefit_n and_o comfort_n of_o many_o who_o yet_o when_o they_o have_v afterward_o be_v convenient_o place_v in_o the_o world_n who_o lie_v drown_v in_o it_o themselves_o but_o rather_o by_o their_o example_n hold_v they_o fast_o in_o it_o and_o so_o have_v decay_v in_o their_o fervent_a zeal_n and_o love_n of_o preach_v and_o in_o other_o gift_n of_o god_n that_o they_o right_o verify_v the_o scripture_n 8.18_o which_o say_v from_o he_o that_o have_v not_o that_o be_v who_o use_v not_o well_o the_o gift_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n from_o break_v in_o more_o furious_o upon_o we_o by_o their_o daily_a and_o fervent_a prayer_n &_o care_v that_o they_o have_v for_o the_o peace_n &_o welfare_n of_o zion_n the_o number_n of_o who_o god_n vouchsafe_v to_o multiply_v among_o we_o beside_o those_o few_o i_o say_v what_o great_a matter_n can_v be_v say_v of_o the_o rest_n for_o even_o the_o most_o of_o they_o who_o have_v the_o gospel_n preach_v among_o they_o both_o pure_o and_o painful_o what_o hearty_a love_n have_v they_o to_o it_o what_o power_n have_v it_o over_o their_o affection_n how_o few_o be_v cast_v into_o the_o mould_n of_o it_o to_o be_v make_v humble_a lowly_a upright_o innocent_a zealous_a merciful_a kind_a and_o on_o the_o contrary_a to_o cast_v up_o the_o unsavourie_a gorge_n of_o their_o rebellious_a corruption_n oh_o how_o few_o of_o they_o have_v ply_v the_o mean_n with_o such_o reverence_n and_o diligence_n that_o they_o may_v testify_v that_o they_o have_v grow_v in_o knowledge_n faith_n and_o other_o grace_n but_o have_v rather_o employ_v themselves_o whole_o about_o the_o flit_a &_o vanish_v profit_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o present_a life_n as_o though_o they_o have_v not_o be_v bear_v to_o far_o more_o excellent_a end_n and_o purpose_n oh_o how_o do_v many_o forget_v themselves_o when_o they_o thus_o lie_v drown_v therein_o till_o god_n do_v by_o some_o great_a affliction_n draw_v they_o out_o of_o they_o to_o true_a repentance_n and_o thus_o trifle_v out_o a_o deal_n of_o precious_a time_n which_o shall_v have_v be_v redeem_v to_o far_o better_a and_o more_o precious_a use_n and_o thus_o it_o appear_v how_o far_o both_o minister_n &_o people_n be_v from_o make_v this_o use_n that_o the_o church_n do_v of_o their_o peace_n although_o they_o have_v many_o other_o blessing_n withal_o and_o yet_o as_o little_a as_o it_o trouble_v they_o it_o may_v easy_o be_v see_v what_o a_o great_a sin_n it_o be_v as_o many_o other_o way_n so_o this_o one_o especial_o that_o the_o devil_n himself_o affirm_v that_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n though_o such_o fear_n god_n more_o than_o other_o who_o live_v in_o prosperity_n and_o be_v free_a from_o sore_a affliction_n for_o thus_o he_o say_v when_o god_n commend_v job_n as_o a_o man_n that_o fear_v god_n and_o depart_v from_o evil_n do_v job_n fear_n god_n for_o nought_o have_v thou_o that_o be_v first_o such_o a_o heart_n as_o they_o may_v fear_v he_o for_o therefore_o their_o answer_n be_v dislike_v although_o their_o word_n be_v good_a because_o they_o proceed_v not_o from_o such_o a_o heart_n but_o this_o speech_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o this_o manner_n utter_v raise_v a_o doubt_n in_o the_o hearer_n what_o he_o shall_v mean_v by_o wish_v such_o a_o heart_n as_o though_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n can_v not_o grow_v in_o any_o heart_n and_o likewise_o come_v from_o it_o and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o what_o heart_n be_v that_o he_o wish_v unto_o they_o to_o the_o which_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o obedience_n to_o his_o commandment_n do_v not_o come_v from_o every_o heart_n neither_o do_v such_o fruit_n grow_v in_o every_o garden_n note_v heart_n and_o it_o must_v be_v such_o a_o heart_n indeed_o as_o can_v be_v match_v neither_o have_v any_o fellow_n or_o companion_n but_o what_o manner_n of_o heart_n be_v that_o you_o will_v say_v of_o it_o and_o most_o earnest_o desire_v it_o and_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v a_o free_a grant_n of_o it_o unto_o such_o as_o be_v thus_o prepare_v for_o it_o by_o earnest_n desire_v it_o 31._o even_o as_o in_o the_o forementioned_a place_n the_o lord_n say_v i_o be_o a_o physician_n for_o the_o sick_a 7.37_o and_o in_o another_o place_n i_o will_v give_v the_o water_n of_o life_n unto_o may_v proceed_v from_o thence_o the_o party_n be_v thus_o persuade_v of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o free_a remission_n of_o sin_n and_o what_o unlooked_v for_o contentment_n he_o have_v fear_n of_o god_n displeasure_n for_o the_o same_o i_o give_v these_o two_o caveat_n or_o watchword_n the_o one_o be_v this_o that_o if_o god_n press_v our_o conscience_n with_o the_o powerful_a preach_n of_o his_o word_n note_v and_o accuse_v and_o arrest_v they_o thereby_o that_o we_o in_o no_o wise_n resist_v that_o work_n of_o grace_n but_o submit_v ourselves_o thereto_o see_v he_o use_v to_o do_v so_o to_o they_o who_o he_o will_v save_v the_o other_o that_o be_v
even_o the_o thing_n which_o they_o thirst_v for_o for_o the_o lord_n answer_n be_v that_o he_o will_v quench_v it_o if_o they_o thirst_v therefore_o for_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o can_v be_v satisfy_v without_o it_o they_o shall_v partake_v that_o if_o for_o faith_n to_o apprehend_v it_o and_o by_o which_o they_o may_v know_v they_o be_v forgive_v that_o shall_v be_v grant_v they_o thirst_n of_o longing_n for_o god_n favour_n and_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n in_o whosoever_o it_o shall_v be_v find_v object_n 1_o but_o while_o i_o be_o set_v down_o this_o i_o think_v i_o hear_v some_o object_v thus_o oh_o this_o be_v too_o good_a to_o be_v true_a for_o we_o say_v they_o have_v deep_o smart_v for_o that_o we_o can_v never_o fasten_v upon_o this_o truth_n who_o yet_o have_v seek_v it_o with_o tear_n and_o have_v make_v bitter_a complaint_n for_o that_o we_o can_v not_o believe_v it_o and_o therefore_o we_o think_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o comfort_n for_o us._n answ_n to_o such_o therefore_o i_o answer_v that_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o conclude_v against_o themselves_o upon_o such_o weak_a ground_n but_o wait_v still_o for_o this_o doctrine_n have_v be_v strong_o prove_v and_o further_o may_v be_v to_o such_o as_o be_v not_o satisfy_v as_o well_o by_o other_o testimony_n as_o by_o that_o which_o have_v be_v set_v down_o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o far_o from_o the_o grace_n whereby_o they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o apply_v it_o to_o themselves_o and_o the_o unlike_a it_o seem_v to_o they_o to_o be_v true_a because_o it_o be_v so_o good_a and_o comfortable_a they_o must_v know_v that_o it_o commend_v the_o more_o the_o great_a kindness_n of_o god_n to_o man_n and_o so_o to_o they_o in_o the_o depth_n of_o their_o misery_n when_o it_o seem_v to_o they_o to_o be_v unavoidable_a and_o the_o more_o high_o he_o be_v to_o be_v praise_v for_o his_o unspeakable_a love_n and_o goodness_n and_o it_o be_v true_a that_o nothing_o do_v more_o set_v four_o the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o we_o then_o this_o as_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o great_a price_n that_o he_o may_v or_o can_v bestow_v upon_o us._n object_n 2_o other_o object_n that_o they_o can_v hardly_o think_v that_o god_n will_v so_o easy_o and_o for_o nothing_o on_o our_o behalf_n offer_v so_o large_o unto_o such_o as_o have_v so_o sore_a and_o so_o many_o way_n provoke_v he_o namely_o that_o if_o we_o do_v but_o thirst_v for_o the_o best_a thing_n we_o shall_v have_v our_o thirst_n quench_v when_o yet_o they_o do_v not_o see_v they_o say_v that_o there_o be_v require_v so_o much_o as_o a_o dislike_n and_o abhort_v of_o sin_n with_o this_o great_a offer_n of_o mercy_n without_o which_o yet_o they_o know_v no_o mercy_n can_v be_v show_v answ_n 1_o to_o the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o objection_n this_o answer_n be_v to_o be_v make_v that_o it_o be_v to_o the_o great_a honour_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v overcome_v man_n evil_a with_o good_a leave_v to_o we_o a_o example_n therein_o that_o we_o shall_v follow_v and_o be_v like_a to_o he_o and_o that_o he_o send_v his_o son_n into_o the_o world_n for_o they_o that_o be_v ungodly_a and_o unworthy_a and_o for_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o objection_n 5.6_o that_o so_o large_a and_o precious_a a_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o the_o bare_a thirst_v after_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o eternal_a life_n without_o any_o leave_v and_o forsake_v of_o sin_n to_o this_o point_n i_o require_v diligent_a observe_v of_o my_o answer_n i_o say_v therefore_o that_o all_o thing_n can_v be_v mention_v at_o once_o in_o handle_v some_o point_n of_o holy_a doctrine_n lest_o we_o shall_v thereby_o fall_v into_o confusedness_n neither_o in_o handle_v plain_o this_o of_o thirst_v be_v it_o necessary_a to_o speak_v of_o the_o renounce_n or_o purpose_v against_o sin_n otherwise_o then_o in_o the_o way_n of_o preoccupation_n that_o be_v the_o answer_v of_o a_o objection_n as_o here_o i_o do_v therefore_o to_o this_o part_n of_o the_o objection_n sin_n i_o answer_v that_o he_o who_o thirst_v true_o for_o salvation_n can_v do_v it_o without_o the_o abhor_v of_o the_o sin_n which_o have_v be_v most_o delight_v in_o for_o while_o we_o desire_v grace_n we_o abhor_v sin_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o it_o and_o this_o thirst_v after_o the_o water_n of_o life_n shall_v dry_v up_o the_o heat_n of_o sin_n by_o little_a and_o little_a no_o otherwise_o than_o the_o hot_a and_o scorch_a sun_n do_v the_o moist_a and_o soft_a puddle_n i_o mean_v so_o far_o as_o the_o similitude_n serve_v for_o this_o purpose_n and_o therefore_o let_v any_o make_v this_o good_a that_o he_o thirst_v and_o i_o will_v make_v it_o good_a by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o his_o thirst_n shall_v be_v quench_v and_o his_o sin_n pardon_v now_o therefore_o where_o be_v they_o which_o say_v oh_o preacher_n urge_v we_o so_o hardly_o that_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o follow_v the_o doctrine_n they_o teach_v we_o of_o the_o way_n to_o eternal_a life_n i_o say_v if_o the_o way_n that_o we_o set_v down_o be_v hard_a it_o be_v through_o the_o hardness_n of_o your_o heart_n for_o otherwise_o who_o will_v desire_v the_o way_n to_o be_v easy_a than_o it_o be_v here_o set_v down_o to_o be_v he_o that_o thirst_v after_o it_o shall_v have_v eternal_a life_n and_o yet_o see_v it_o be_v so_o easy_a let_v all_o who_o desire_v to_o be_v partaker_n of_o life_n look_v well_o and_o careful_o to_o this_o
that_o they_o have_v no_o less_o to_o testify_v it_o to_o they_o than_o this_o namely_o that_o they_o have_v the_o thirst_n which_o have_v be_v set_v down_o to_o be_v require_v and_o here_o for_o the_o more_o full_a handle_n of_o this_o point_n believe_v i_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o three_o branch_n of_o this_o first_o part_n that_o be_v to_o say_v what_o god_n require_v of_o they_o who_o thirst_n he_o will_v quench_v and_o that_o be_v that_o they_o come_v to_o he_o for_o it_o that_o be_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v do_v in_o deed_n as_o he_o promise_v even_o satisfy_v the_o soul_n of_o he_o that_o thirst_v with_o the_o thing_n that_o he_o desire_v and_o therefore_o with_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o salvation_n if_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n he_o thirst_v after_o this_o faith_n be_v that_o which_o the_o prophet_n require_v when_o he_o speak_v of_o come_v require_v it_o of_o they_o that_o they_o come_v even_o as_o our_o saviour_n also_o in_o saint_n john_n mean_v the_o same_o by_o come_v to_o he_o where_o he_o make_v come_v and_o believe_v â—â—_o both_o one_o he_o that_o come_v to_o i_o shall_v not_o hunger_n and_o he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o shall_v never_o thirst_v meaning_n he_o shall_v never_o want_v spiritual_a nourishment_n namely_o that_o which_o his_o soul_n long_v for_o who_o believe_v in_o he_o so_o that_o we_o see_v it_o be_v require_v here_o that_o the_o thirsty_a person_n who_o be_v by_o the_o prophet_n call_v out_o from_o all_o other_o to_o drink_v and_o to_o be_v refresh_v shall_v believe_v that_o god_n mean_v as_o he_o speak_v and_o will_v do_v it_o indeed_o which_o stand_v with_o great_a reason_n that_o they_o shall_v do_v so_o for_o although_o the_o lord_n bequeath_v and_o free_o grant_v it_o unto_o they_o yet_o if_o they_o weigh_v it_o not_o and_o so_o give_v no_o credit_n to_o it_o how_o can_v they_o be_v the_o better_a for_o it_o neither_o need_v they_o fear_v that_o they_o shall_v presume_v and_o be_v too_o bold_a in_o clasp_v about_o and_o believe_v it_o for_o while_o they_o desire_v it_o 8.33_o and_o god_n promise_v to_o grant_v they_o their_o desire_n who_o shall_v take_v it_o from_o they_o no_o if_o god_n will_v justify_v none_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o condemn_v believe_v and_o if_o you_o ask_v why_o will_v god_n have_v they_o believe_v it_o i_o say_v to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v see_v the_o love_a kindness_n of_o god_n towards_o they_o who_o have_v be_v so_o low_o bring_v by_o the_o sight_n of_o their_o unworthiness_n that_o be_v even_o to_o hell_n gate_n in_o their_o own_o persuasion_n shall_v the_o more_o wonder_n to_o see_v the_o height_n of_o glory_n that_o they_o be_v by_o he_o exalt_v to_o and_o this_o they_o believe_v and_o consider_v â—_o do_v as_o saint_n peter_n say_v love_v he_o and_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a whereas_o otherwise_o they_o can_v do_v neither_o and_o do_v we_o not_o see_v by_o this_o that_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n why_o god_n require_v of_o all_o his_o that_o they_o shall_v believe_v in_o his_o son_n even_o that_o they_o may_v see_v his_o love_a kindness_n which_o be_v before_o hide_v from_o they_o and_o be_v make_v joyful_a thereby_o more_o than_o they_o can_v be_v bring_v unto_o by_o the_o voice_n of_o a_o angel_n they_o may_v love_v he_o and_o be_v zealous_a in_o his_o service_n which_o by_o no_o other_o mean_n they_o can_v be_v bring_v unto_o therefore_o let_v they_o labour_v above_o all_o thing_n that_o they_o may_v have_v this_o persuasion_n of_o god_n savour_n and_o let_v they_o see_v that_o they_o have_v no_o less_o than_o this_o unfeigned_a faith_n in_o they_o though_o weak_a because_o so_o great_a and_o weighty_a matter_n be_v thereby_o wrought_v and_o uphold_v in_o they_o but_o here_o one_o thing_n more_o i_o must_v add_v faith_n though_o afterward_o i_o shall_v say_v somewhat_o of_o it_o and_o that_o be_v how_o a_o man_n may_v prove_v that_o he_o have_v this_o faith_n see_v it_o be_v easy_o doubt_v of_o and_o most_o of_o all_o by_o they_o who_o have_v least_o cause_n and_o this_o proof_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o testimony_n thereof_o i_o think_v it_o most_o fit_a to_o stay_v they_o up_o withal_o that_o they_o may_v not_o waver_v as_o they_o who_o have_v it_o not_o shall_v do_v and_o must_v needs_o though_o they_o speak_v great_a word_n about_o it_o and_o i_o can_v brieflier_n nor_o more_o pithy_o do_v it_o then_o by_o tell_v they_o that_o if_o they_o hold_v fast_o this_o precious_a promise_n of_o salvation_n by_o christ_n they_o must_v know_v that_o they_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n also_o which_o cry_v in_o they_o abba_n father_n and_o sanctify_v they_o and_o more_o plain_o thus_o that_o as_o they_o desire_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n they_o desire_v and_o endeavour_n after_o the_o reformation_n of_o their_o life_n and_o the_o wean_n of_o their_o heart_n from_o evil_a also_o and_o this_o where_o it_o be_v wrought_v that_o i_o say_v no_o more_o of_o it_o in_o this_o place_n shall_v ever_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v this_o effectual_a faith_n this_o i_o have_v say_v of_o this_o first_o part_n and_o the_o three_o branch_n thereof_o and_o namely_o of_o this_o one_o kind_n of_o their_o thirst_v for_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o eternal_a life_n for_o there_o be_v other_o thirsting_n then_o for_o these_o as_o i_o give_v the_o reader_n to_o understand_v before_o whereof_o i_o will_v give_v you_o a_o taste_n though_o more_o brief_o in_o the_o next_o sermon_n see_v i_o have_v large_o handle_v this_o in_o the_o forementioned_a instance_n that_o it_o may_v give_v light_n to_o the_o reader_n that_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n he_o thirst_v for_o he_o may_v be_v as_o sure_a that_o he_o shall_v obtain_v they_o the_o second_o sermon_n upon_o the_o same_o text_n life_n now_o to_o proceed_v where_o i_o leave_v we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o god_n people_n be_v never_o full_o satisfy_v while_o they_o wander_v here_o on_o earth_n but_o be_v ever_o thirst_v after_o one_o good_a thing_n or_o other_o or_o some_o new_a measure_n of_o grace_n whatsoever_o they_o have_v be_v satisfy_v in_o already_o for_o otherwise_o they_o can_v not_o be_v include_v among_o they_o to_o who_o this_o promise_n be_v make_v neither_o have_v they_o their_o part_n in_o it_o when_o it_o be_v say_v ho_o all_o you_o that_o thirst_n come_v to_o the_o water_n and_o drink_n from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o have_v attain_v to_o true_a faith_n yet_o as_o fervent_o desire_v to_o preserve_v and_o strengthen_v the_o same_o as_o they_o desire_v when_o they_o be_v before_o in_o great_a fear_n and_o doubt_v to_o have_v any_o measure_n at_o all_o thereof_o and_o so_o the_o lord_n require_v that_o we_o high_o esteem_v desire_v and_o long_o after_o the_o same_o and_o the_o salvation_n which_o we_o wait_v for_o thereby_o even_o as_o at_o the_o first_o acquaintance_n with_o they_o we_o do_v in_o like_a manner_n god_n faithful_a people_n know_v that_o he_o be_v as_o a_o flow_a fountain_n rich_a in_o all_o good_a thing_n and_o never_o draw_v dry_a they_o thirst_v still_o after_o other_o particular_a grace_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n when_o he_o have_v satisfy_v they_o with_o the_o former_a and_o namely_o hope_v love_n patience_n meekness_n humbleness_n strength_n to_o bear_v affliction_n and_o such_o like_a and_o he_o do_v no_o soon_o stir_v up_o in_o they_o the_o desire_n and_o longing_n after_o these_o but_o he_o do_v withal_o give_v they_o his_o word_n and_o promise_n that_o he_o will_v bestow_v the_o same_o upon_o they_o even_o as_o he_o here_o speak_v say_v he_o all_o you_o that_o thirst_n come_v to_o the_o water_n and_o drink_n and_o in_o like_a manner_n he_o speak_v in_o hosea_n 14.6.7_o when_o he_o have_v say_v that_o he_o will_v forgive_v all_o their_o iniquity_n and_o love_v they_o free_o he_o add_v i_o will_v be_v as_o the_o dew_n to_o israel_n he_o shall_v grow_v as_o the_o lily_n and_o fasten_v his_o root_n as_o the_o tree_n of_o lebanon_n his_o branch_n shall_v spread_v and_o his_o beauty_n shall_v be_v as_o the_o olive_n tree_n and_o his_o smell_n as_o lebanon_n by_o all_o which_o the_o lord_n mean_v that_o when_o his_o people_n turn_v to_o he_o and_o long_v for_o his_o mercy_n shall_v obtain_v it_o to_o cover_v their_o sin_n they_o shall_v as_o the_o dry_a that_o which_o will_v do_v you_o good_a neither_o be_v able_a to_o satisfy_v your_o soul_n with_o the_o food_n and_o bread_n of_o life_n all_o which_o the_o best_a that_o can_v be_v say_v of_o it_o be_v this_o that_o it_o be_v but_o lose_a labour_n and_o they_o in_o so_o do_v may_v just_o be_v compare_v to_o they_o who_o bestow_v their_o money_n upon_o their_o lust_n in_o sundry_a mispending_a of_o which_o shall_v be_v employ_v upon_o they_o and_o their_o family_n gospeler_n but_o to_o pass_v from_o they_o there_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o man_n who_o the_o prophet_n reproof_n do_v reach_v unto_o as_o well_o as_o unto_o those_o and_o such_o they_o be_v as_o although_o they_o hold_v the_o truth_n in_o judgement_n and_o do_v worship_n god_n in_o outward_a manner_n yet_o they_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o with_o their_o body_n 2d_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o who_o say_v lord_n lord_n indeed_o but_o yet_o do_v not_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n neither_o be_v natural_a man_n can_v be_v obedient_a unto_o it_o 8.7_o with_o their_o lip_n they_o confess_v he_o but_o with_o their_o deed_n they_o deny_v he_o and_o therefore_o be_v far_o from_o the_o happiness_n which_o life_n or_o at_o least_o they_o abide_v in_o they_o still_o and_o yet_o the_o forwardâ—â—_n sort_n of_o they_o both_o who_o mean_v more_o simple_o be_v just_o reprove_v by_o the_o prophet_n word_n here_o in_o complain_v thus_o why_o do_v you_o lay_v out_o your_o money_n and_o not_o for_o bread_n your_o labour_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o be_v satisfy_v for_o even_o these_o follow_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o their_o guide_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o that_o which_o they_o seek_v and_o therefore_o be_v never_o like_a to_o attain_v it_o seek_v it_o after_o their_o own_o fancy_n and_o opinion_n and_o not_o thirst_v after_o it_o as_o without_o which_o they_o can_v be_v satisfy_v so_o that_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o israel_n so_o i_o may_v speak_v of_o these_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n 9.31.32_o say_v he_o that_o israel_n which_o follow_v the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n yet_o can_v not_o attain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n even_o so_o they_o who_o seek_v salvation_n and_o the_o blessedness_n that_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o god_n choose_v even_o that_o be_v enough_o to_o deprive_v they_o of_o it_o in_o that_o they_o seek_v it_o amiss_o that_o be_v to_o say_v not_o as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n direct_v namely_o that_o they_o shall_v thirst_v for_o it_o as_o have_v be_v say_v you_o have_v hear_v the_o reprehension_n exhortation_n the_o exhortation_n follow_v in_o which_o he_o labour_v to_o draw_v they_o from_o their_o own_o wisdom_n which_o deceive_v they_o to_o hearken_v to_o another_o manner_n of_o wisdom_n which_o be_v able_a to_o lead_v they_o to_o that_o which_o he_o call_v they_o to_o enjoy_v that_o be_v the_o true_a happiness_n which_o he_o lay_v out_o under_o these_o speech_n to_o eat_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o delight_v their_o soul_n in_o fatness_n and_o here_o it_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v mark_v that_o when_o he_o have_v tell_v they_o to_o what_o their_o own_o wisdom_n bring_v they_o happiness_n in_o lead_v they_o to_o seek_v salvation_n and_o happiness_n and_o that_o be_v to_o nothing_o but_o to_o deceive_v they_o and_o to_o lose_v their_o labour_n for_o which_o he_o reprove_v they_o now_o he_o will_n they_o to_o hear_v he_o diligent_o who_o teach_v they_o to_o seek_v the_o same_o by_o the_o light_n and_o direction_n of_o god_n word_n whereby_o he_o clear_o show_v that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o find_v that_o which_o they_o seek_v by_o no_o wisdom_n of_o man_n by_o no_o learning_n much_o less_o by_o any_o other_o mean_n of_o blind_a devotion_n and_o fond_a zeal_n without_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n only_o do_v it_o so_o we_o must_v further_o mark_v how_o and_o when_o it_o do_v so_o that_o be_v it_o as_o he_o say_v here_o when_o we_o harken_v diligent_o unto_o it_o as_o declare_v thereby_o that_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v guide_v by_o it_o for_o so_o he_o require_v say_v harken_v diligent_o unto_o i_o in_o that_o which_o i_o shall_v say_v to_o you_o from_o god_n for_o as_o solomon_n faith_n of_o seek_v wisdom_n that_o there_o be_v a_o seek_v of_o it_o slight_o negligent_o and_o slothful_o by_o which_o man_n never_o find_v it_o and_o there_o be_v a_o seek_v of_o it_o 2.3_o as_o silver_n be_v seek_v of_o the_o merchant_n that_o be_v with_o all_o diligence_n and_o by_o all_o good_a opportunity_n not_o rest_v till_o they_o find_v it_o if_o it_o be_v to_o be_v have_v so_o there_o be_v a_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n cold_o without_o profit_n and_o there_o be_v a_o hear_n which_o will_v draw_v and_o persuade_v he_o that_o hear_v never_o to_o give_v over_o till_o he_o have_v find_v and_o buy_v the_o pearl_n which_o be_v hide_v in_o the_o gospel_n because_o he_o know_v that_o it_o be_v there_o to_o be_v have_v this_o hear_v the_o prophet_n require_v and_o he_o that_o hear_v not_o with_o this_o mind_n nor_o to_o this_o end_n he_o lose_v his_o labour_n and_o bestow_v all_o his_o travel_n in_o vain_a quest_n but_o it_o will_v be_v ask_v here_o what_o be_v that_o which_o the_o prophet_n will_v have_v they_o hear_v of_o he_o to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v prosper_v attain_v the_o assurance_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o the_o happiness_n which_o they_o desire_v for_o he_o do_v not_o express_o mention_v in_o this_o verse_n wherein_o he_o will_v have_v they_o hear_v he_o answ_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v that_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n he_o speak_v to_o all_o the_o people_n and_o ask_v among_o they_o all_o who_o they_o be_v that_o thirst_v to_o who_o he_o give_v a_o answer_n from_o god_n according_a to_o their_o heart_n desire_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v with_o all_o such_o good_a thing_n as_o they_o thirst_v for_o now_o in_o this_o verse_n we_o hear_v he_o reprove_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o and_o thirst_v for_o it_o as_o god_n word_n teach_v they_o to_o do_v therefore_o these_o he_o exhort_v to_o hear_v he_o that_o they_o will_v also_o with_o the_o other_o set_v their_o heart_n upon_o it_o and_o thirst_n after_o it_o even_o this_o be_v that_o which_o he_o require_v their_o diligent_a attention_n about_o that_o so_o seek_v it_o as_o their_o brethren_n do_v they_o may_v with_o they_o it_o and_o to_o cast_v away_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n and_o jeopard_v our_o soul_n upon_o the_o doctrine_n that_o be_v teach_v we_o this_o i_o say_v be_v another_o matter_n then_o bare_a persuasion_n from_o what_o ground_n soever_o it_o come_v and_o this_o be_v the_o heavenly_a work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o move_v and_o lead_v we_o shall_v well_o show_v itself_o to_o be_v so_o indeed_o this_o be_v so_o we_o may_v gather_v necessary_o hereby_o that_o the_o sound_n plain_a and_o powerful_a preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n god_n whereby_o only_o through_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n we_o may_v be_v persuade_v to_o turn_v to_o god_n aright_o be_v a_o most_o bless_a gift_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o that_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_v that_o he_o have_v appoint_v that_o rather_o than_o other_o mean_n to_o so_o excellent_a a_o end_n but_o here_o i_o must_v add_v this_o because_o many_o even_o of_o the_o private_a sort_n of_o man_n who_o have_v be_v happy_o train_v they_o have_v peace_n with_o satan_n and_o peace_n with_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n yet_o want_v they_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o be_v at_o war_n and_o enmity_n with_o god_n though_o they_o labour_v to_o forget_v the_o same_o and_o all_o that_o fearful_a wrath_n to_o come_v hang_v over_o their_o head_n and_o may_v fall_v they_o know_v not_o how_o christ_n jesus_n they_o be_v whole_o possess_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o fear_n and_o bondage_n that_o they_o can_v with_o boldness_n call_v upon_o god_n they_o have_v no_o promise_n nor_o assurance_n that_o god_n will_v hear_v they_o 9_o nay_o his_o ear_n be_v stop_v that_o he_o will_v not_o hear_v they_o his_o eye_n be_v turn_v from_o they_o that_o he_o will_v not_o regard_v and_o pity_v their_o misery_n he_o will_v have_v no_o communion_n no_o society_n company_n nor_o fellowship_n with_o they_o i_o cease_v to_o speak_v of_o those_o hellish_a terror_n of_o a_o accuse_a conscience_n that_o can_v but_o expel_v all_o joy_n and_o comfort_v forth_o so_o oft_o as_o their_o sleepy_a conscience_n be_v awaken_v and_o omit_v many_o other_o thing_n which_o may_v be_v add_v to_o this_o purpose_n by_o this_o little_a which_o have_v be_v say_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n be_v clear_a that_o the_o righteous_a and_o they_o alone_a have_v both_o need_n and_o just_a cause_n wherefore_o to_o rejoice_v we_o will_v now_o come_v brief_o to_o some_o few_o use_n of_o this_o point_n and_o pass_v to_o the_o next_o in_o order_n use_v 1_o first_o therefore_o if_o the_o righteous_a only_o and_o the_o faithful_a have_v need_n of_o this_o joy_n duty_n as_o we_o have_v show_v it_o be_v not_o for_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n to_o comfort_n and_o cheer_v up_o any_o but_o these_o for_o we_o know_v the_o minister_n be_v a_o physician_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o cure_v the_o disease_n and_o a_o chirurgeon_n to_o cure_v the_o wound_n of_o the_o soul_n now_o it_o be_v not_o for_o a_o physician_n to_o prescribe_v to_o the_o whole_a but_o to_o the_o sick_a nor_o for_o the_o chirurgeon_n to_o plaster_n that_o which_o be_v sound_a but_o that_o which_o be_v hurt_v and_o wound_v the_o wicked_a be_v whole_a they_o be_v not_o sick_a or_o wound_v with_o sorrow_n no_o need_n therefore_o have_v they_o of_o the_o chirurgeon_n to_o bind_v up_o that_o which_o be_v break_v neither_o of_o the_o physician_n to_o restore_v health_n when_o none_o be_v lose_v but_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o he_o that_o true_o fear_v god_n he_o be_v cast_v down_o with_o sorrow_n and_o have_v need_n therefore_o to_o be_v raise_v up_o when_o he_o be_v sick_a of_o sorrow_n and_o have_v need_n of_o heavenly_a cheer_v to_o restore_v he_o he_o be_v wound_v in_o soul_n every_o day_n and_o therefore_o have_v need_n to_o have_v the_o oil_n of_o gladness_n to_o be_v pour_v into_o his_o wound_n use_v 2_o again_o have_v the_o faithful_a and_o they_o only_o just_a cause_n to_o be_v merry_a let_v the_o bad_a learn_fw-mi then_o to_o magnify_v the_o life_n of_o the_o faithful_a as_o the_o most_o happy_a and_o bless_a life_n for_o this_o be_v certain_a he_o be_v most_o happy_a and_o most_o bless_a who_o have_v in_o deed_n and_o in_o truth_n great_a cause_n of_o joy_n and_o to_o reverence_v their_o gift_n that_o they_o may_v have_v a_o part_n in_o they_o use_v 3_o three_o have_v the_o godly_a alone_a need_n of_o comfort_n and_o cheer_v because_o they_o be_v sick_a and_o wound_v already_o with_o sorrow_n then_o mark_v the_o tyger-like_a cruelty_n of_o the_o wicked_a that_o be_v so_o far_o from_o comfort_v and_o relieve_v they_o as_o they_o ought_v that_o they_o add_v sorrow_n to_o their_o sorrow_n and_o affliction_n to_o affliction_n what_o they_o can_v this_o be_v beside_o all_o bound_n of_o common_a humanity_n as_o we_o know_v and_o savour_v of_o a_o devilish_a nature_n to_o rend_v and_o
as_o it_o shall_v seem_v they_o can_v keep_v it_o well_o enough_o though_o they_o never_o sue_v and_o seek_v to_o god_n for_o it_o the_o fountain_n and_o author_n of_o it_o if_o they_o that_o have_v continue_v a_o long_a time_n in_o christ_n school_n shall_v try_v and_o examine_v how_o small_a proceed_n they_o have_v make_v in_o this_o christian_a duty_n and_o search_v to_o find_v out_o the_o cause_n of_o their_o so_o little_a profit_v they_o shall_v find_v by_o trial_n one_o main_a cause_n to_o have_v be_v the_o neglect_n of_o prayer_n for_o so_o excellent_a a_o grace_n as_o this_o be_v live_v we_o may_v praise_v god_n and_o pray_v for_o joy_n that_o rejoice_v we_o may_v praise_v he_o we_o be_v not_o to_o ask_v life_n simple_o to_o live_v but_o that_o live_n we_o may_v praise_v god_n neither_o be_v we_o to_o ask_v joy_n simple_o for_o itself_o but_o that_o rejoice_v in_o god_n and_o in_o his_o goodness_n we_o may_v have_v cause_n and_o be_v the_o fit_a to_o bless_v god_n for_o it_o and_o thus_o if_o we_o come_v to_o god_n for_o supply_v of_o new_a joy_n with_o thanks_o for_o the_o former_a obtain_v god_n be_v ready_a and_o willing_a to_o hear_v we_o but_o see_v i_o can_v contrary_a quench_v these_o good_a motion_n and_o thou_o quenche_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v cause_v this_o joy_n in_o thy_o heart_n therefore_o come_v there_o at_o any_o time_n any_o good_a motion_n into_o thy_o heart_n be_v careful_a by_o all_o mean_v possible_a to_o entertain_v they_o to_o cherish_v and_o to_o make_v much_o of_o they_o so_o shall_v thou_o make_v glad_a the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n and_o he_o shall_v give_v peace_n and_o joy_n to_o thy_o soul_n but_o be_v this_o common_o practise_v nothing_o less_o for_o as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o israelite_n forty_o year_n long_o they_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n so_o may_v it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o most_o among_o we_o our_o whole_a life_n have_v be_v a_o continual_a grieve_v and_o provoke_v the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n for_o which_o of_o we_o can_v excuse_v ourselves_o but_o that_o we_o have_v have_v diverse_a good_a motion_n sometime_o from_o other_o sometime_o from_o ourselves_o and_o yet_o we_o have_v resist_v they_o sometime_o we_o have_v be_v move_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n yet_o either_o for_o some_o vain_a pleasure_n or_o small_a profit_n we_o have_v neglect_v it_o many_o time_n we_o have_v have_v a_o motion_n to_o leave_v swear_v curse_a lie_a and_o some_o especial_a sin_n we_o have_v be_v give_v unto_o yet_o have_v we_o not_o cherish_v these_o motion_n nay_o we_o have_v banish_v they_o away_o and_o shut_v as_o it_o be_v the_o door_n of_o our_o heart_n against_o they_o no_o marvel_n therefore_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n afford_v unto_o we_o so_o scanty_a measure_n of_o heavenly_a joy_n when_o we_o thus_o daily_o and_o continual_o grieve_v he_o when_o as_o fast_o as_o he_o kindle_v any_o grace_n or_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o quench_v it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o cast_v water_n upon_o it_o note_n if_o we_o will_v have_v joy_n we_o must_v make_v much_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o joy_n that_o we_o shall_v do_v if_o we_o never_o cross_v any_o good_a motion_n but_o be_v ready_a with_o all_o cheerfulness_n and_o alacrity_n to_o foster_v and_o to_o cherish_v it_o in_o we_o so_o that_o of_o a_o good_a motion_n it_o may_v grow_v to_o be_v a_o settle_a and_o a_o constant_a affection_n in_o we_o otherwise_o look_v for_o no_o joy_n from_o that_o spirit_n who_o thou_o care_v not_o to_o grieve_v rather_o fear_v as_o just_o thou_o may_v that_o heavy_a sorrow_n or_o at_o least_o a_o deadly_a and_o senseless_a numbness_n will_v befall_v thou_o for_o experience_n have_v show_v most_o fearful_a example_n not_o only_o of_o they_o that_o have_v lose_v their_o joy_n for_o a_o while_n but_o of_o they_o that_o have_v die_v in_o most_o lamentable_a despair_n by_o resist_v these_o good_a motion_n and_o other_o that_o for_o all_o the_o time_n of_o their_o life_n with_o all_o the_o mean_n they_o can_v use_v be_v never_o able_a to_o recover_v the_o feel_n of_o their_o joy_n again_o lose_v by_o the_o resist_a sometime_o of_o one_o good_a motion_n quench_v not_o therefore_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v the_o good_a motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n motion_n but_o yet_o if_o thou_o will_v keep_v thy_o joy_n remember_v and_o be_v careful_a to_o quench_v another_o spirit_n that_o be_v all_o the_o motion_n and_o suggestion_n that_o he_o seek_v to_o put_v into_o thy_o mind_n for_o as_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v the_o spirit_n of_o joy_n and_o be_v cheer_v by_o thou_o will_v cheer_v thy_o heart_n in_o god_n so_o satan_n be_v a_o spirit_n of_o heaviness_n and_o a_o spirit_n of_o despair_n entertain_v he_o and_o follow_v his_o motion_n and_o thou_o fall_v into_o the_o way_n of_o despair_n and_o heaviness_n resist_v he_o and_o his_o suggestion_n and_o thou_o shall_v both_o cheer_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o free_v thyself_o from_o all_o that_o sorrow_n and_o heaviness_n that_o the_o devil_n seek_v to_o bring_v into_o thy_o soul_n predominant_a again_o that_o thou_o may_v keep_v thy_o joy_n in_o god_n remember_v it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o thou_o to_o keep_v some_o kind_n of_o joy_n and_o delight_n in_o good_a thing_n but_o thy_o joy_n in_o these_o thing_n must_v be_v a_o predominant_a note_v &_o a_o everlasting_a joy_n for_o if_o thou_o suffer_v the_o delight_n of_o any_o earthly_a matter_n to_o possess_v &_o to_o occupy_v the_o chief_a place_n in_o thy_o heart_n thy_o true_a joy_n
