say_v that_o he_o bear_v the_o weight_n of_o his_o outward_a suffering_n in_o great_a measure_n from_o the_o very_a beginning_n as_o even_o among_o we_o man_n what_o we_o do_v certain_o foresee_v of_o suffering_n or_o trial_n to_o come_v upon_o we_o for_o the_o future_a do_v affect_v we_o with_o no_o less_o weight_n many_o time_n in_o the_o foresight_n of_o they_o then_o in_o their_o accomplishment_n yea_o sometime_o more_o as_o every_o one_o know_v by_o some_o experience_n and_o that_o he_o be_v give_v up_o and_o resign_v in_o the_o very_a beginning_n to_o come_v into_o the_o world_n outward_o and_o suffer_v those_o indignity_n and_o cruelty_n with_o many_o other_o deep_a trial_n be_v certain_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o a_o sweet_a smell_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v very_o acceptable_a and_o satisfactory_a unto_o he_o vi_o and_o thus_o according_a to_o the_o plain_a and_o genuine_a sense_n above_o mention_v obvious_a to_o the_o weak_a capacity_n we_o may_v true_o say_v that_o all_o the_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n which_o come_v upon_o man_n or_o have_v come_v upon_o they_o from_o the_o very_a beginning_n for_o either_o their_o justification_n or_o perfect_a conjunction_n have_v a_o perfect_a influence_n upon_o all_o mankind_n for_o their_o reconciliation_n and_o renovation_n unto_o god_n as_o obtain_v that_o measure_n of_o light_n and_o grace_n etc._n be_v one_o of_o the_o great_a and_o profound_a mystery_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o have_v a_o exceed_a much_o deep_a sense_n and_o consideration_n than_o most_o apprehend_v or_o than_o any_o can_v apprehend_v but_o as_o it_o be_v open_v unto_o they_o in_o the_o life_n light_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o therefore_o i_o do_v admonish_v from_o dead_a work_n take_v away_o the_o sin_n and_o pollution_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o deface_v and_o blot_v out_o that_o unholy_a image_n of_o satan_n beget_v in_o they_o through_o unrighteousness_n and_o indue_a they_o with_o the_o heavenly_a and_o righteous_a image_n of_o god_n they_o on_o the_o contrary_n have_v suppose_v or_o dream_v that_o his_o end_n in_o come_v be_v to_o reconcile_v they_o to_o god_n and_o justify_v they_o while_o remain_v in_o their_o sin_n yea_o and_o so_o far_o they_o have_v proceed_v herein_o as_o to_o imagine_v that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o holiness_n at_o all_o for_o justification_n and_o reconciliation_n but_o only_o for_o make_v they_o meet_v for_o heaven_n as_o they_o term_v it_o whereby_o it_o will_v seem_v they_o suppose_v that_o whereas_o heaven_n can_v be_v at_o no_o peace_n with_o unholy_a man_n yet_o god_n can_v as_o if_o god_n be_v more_o reconcileable_a with_o iniquity_n than_o heaven_n be_v but_o sure_o neither_o person_n both_o active_o and_o passive_o by_o which_o they_o be_v whole_o justify_v â—n_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n through_o his_o satisfaction_n though_o they_o remain_v in_o much_o sinfulness_n and_o unholiness_n in_o their_o own_o particular_a but_o though_o we_o do_v true_o acknowledge_v the_o full_a and_o perfect_a satisfaction_n of_o christ_n unto_o the_o father_n both_o in_o his_o do_n according_a to_o the_o manner_n as_o follow_v i._o when_o man_n sin_v against_o god_n and_o become_v corrupt_a and_o unclean_a in_o his_o heart_n before_o he_o through_o transgession_n the_o peace_n betwixt_o god_n and_o he_o be_v break_v and_o so_o man_n who_o in_o his_o innocent_a state_n be_v justify_v and_o at_o peace_n with_o god_n now_o through_o his_o sin_n become_v unjustified_a and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n kindle_v against_o he_o both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n in_o great_a measure_n ii_o this_o wrath_n of_o god_n will_v have_v burn_v in_o such_o a_o violent_a and_o forcible_a manner_n have_v not_o he_o provide_v a_o way_n in_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o abate_v and_o qualify_v it_o that_o it_o will_v have_v sink_v man_n into_o endless_a life_n through_o the_o burden_n and_o weight_n of_o man_n iniquity_n but_o how_o christ_n do_v suffer_v under_o the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o can_v never_o that_o deep_a and_o near_a sympathy_n that_o his_o life_n in_o the_o saint_n have_v with_o the_o seed_n of_o that_o life_n that_o be_v oppress_v in_o other_o till_o it_o be_v raise_v so_o that_o many_o in_o who_o this_o righteous_a life_n be_v raise_v to_o reign_v in_o perfect_a dominion_n over_o all_o its_o contrary_a in_o their_o own_o particular_n yet_o witness_v many_o time_n its_o deep_a suffering_n through_o its_o sympathy_n with_o that_o seed_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n oppress_v and_o murder_v in_o other_o so_o that_o indeed_o upon_o the_o matter_n this_o righteous_a life_n in_o none_o of_o the_o saint_n will_v be_v whole_o deliver_v from_o its_o suffering_n till_o that_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n over_o all_o the_o world_n be_v raise_v up_o in_o all_o heart_n to_o reign_v spirit_n and_o this_o spirit_n of_o iniquity_n wrought_v what_o it_o can_v so_o to_o eclipse_n and_o vail_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n from_o his_o righteous_a soul_n as_o to_o take_v away_o that_o comfort_n and_o joy_n from_o he_o which_o at_o other_o time_n he_o have_v yet_o his_o faith_n pierce_v through_o this_o cloud_n that_o it_o do_v not_o overcome_v he_o but_o he_o overcome_v it_o and_o signify_v his_o faith_n in_o god_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o respect_v that_o sensible_a joy_n and_o comfort_n yet_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o deep_a own_o but_o the_o wrath_n which_o the_o damn_a suffer_v have_v no_o such_o qualification_n and_o true_o we_o can_v judge_v that_o the_o father_n be_v to_o speak_v proper_o offend_v or_o displease_v with_o he_o nay_o not_o on_o our_o account_n nor_o do_v the_o scripture_n speak_v any_o thing_n so_o only_o it_o please_v the_o father_n thus_o to_o try_v he_o and_o make_v he_o perfect_a thus_o by_o suffering_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v overcome_v sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o in_o the_o more_o glory_n and_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_v to_o help_v they_o that_o be_v under_o trial_n as_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o be_v present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a they_o have_v also_o great_a influence_n to_o raise_v in_o our_o soul_n most_o fervent_a breathe_n and_o supplication_n unto_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o for_o his_o pardon_v and_o forgive_a grace_n for_o and_o because_o of_o his_o son_n bloodshed_n his_o suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o he_o procure_v or_o purchase_v it_o but_o also_o for_o his_o sanctify_a and_o mortify_v grace_n even_o for_o a_o abundant_a measure_n of_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n of_o grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o die_v perfect_o unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n so_o thâ—t_v the_o soul_n may_v strong_o plead_v with_o the_o lord_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v pour_v forth_o abundant_o of_o his_o grace_n life_n light_n and_o spirit_n because_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v forcible_a motive_n unto_o it_o to_o war_n against_o sin_n universal_o and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o to_o the_o utter_a kill_n and_o destroy_v of_o it_o see_v it_o be_v the_o great_a enemy_n of_o that_o tender_a life_n of_o christ_n which_o suffer_v so_o much_o on_o this_o account_n even_o to_o the_o mortify_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o sin_n and_o save_v it_o therefrom_o so_o that_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o diligent_o apply_v itself_o unto_o a_o total_a mortification_n of_o sin_n it_o do_v nothing_o answer_v unto_o that_o love_n and_o goodwill_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o suffering_n any_o such_o thing_n eph._n 5.27_o also_o how_o can_v the_o soul_n but_o be_v move_v to_o press_v after_o holiness_n see_v it_o inward_o feel_v that_o the_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o much_o ease_v and_o refresh_v and_o delight_v in_o its_o become_a holy_a as_o ever_o it_o be_v former_o grieve_v and_o burden_v with_o its_o iniquity_n vi_o our_o bless_a lord_n in_o his_o outward_a come_n life_n and_o way_n of_o conversation_n doctrine_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n be_v a_o most_o noble_a and_o perfect_a example_n unto_o we_o even_o the_o best_a that_o ever_o outward_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v that_o we_o may_v imitate_v his_o virtue_n and_o follow_v his_o step_n in_o all_o godliness_n temperance_n and_o righteousness_n who_o teach_v we_o most_o excellent_a document_n and_o instruction_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n both_o in_o doctrine_n and_o example_n and_o seal_v the_o same_o with_o his_o most_o holy_a and_o bless_a suffering_n who_o know_v no_o sin_n yet_o so_o willing_o
i_o shall_v be_v turn_v but_o now_o many_o when_o the_o lord_n touch_v they_o and_o by_o his_o touch_n infuse_v a_o certain_a secret_a virtue_n sufficient_a to_o turn_v they_o or_o whereby_o they_o may_v turn_v yea_o when_o he_o draw_v and_o pull_v they_o very_o sensible_o do_v resist_v and_o continue_v in_o their_o aversion_n and_o of_o such_o the_o scripture_n say_v they_o draw_v back_o and_o soul_n but_o of_o both_o viz._n the_o understanding_n and_o will_n yea_o of_o the_o whole_a soul_n with_o all_o its_o power_n when_o the_o conversion_n be_v through_o and_o total_a chap._n iii_o show_v how_o the_o soul_n ought_v to_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n towards_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o effect_n which_o follow_v at_o first_o thereupon_o as_o also_o of_o the_o inward_a trial_n and_o trouble_n it_o usual_o meet_v with_o therein_o now_o after_o the_o soul_n have_v get_v itself_o convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o divine_a influence_n and_o assistance_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n present_v therein_o than_o it_o be_v to_o be_v careful_a that_o it_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o the_o lord_n who_o by_o his_o divine_a grace_n have_v enable_v it_o to_o convert_v after_o the_o former_a manner_n do_v and_o will_v also_o enable_v it_o to_o persevere_v therein_o for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o application_n unto_o the_o divine_a word_n light_n and_o life_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n that_o it_o come_v to_o receive_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o bless_a effect_n thereof_o a_o outward_a example_n whereof_o we_o have_v very_o plain_a in_o our_o hold_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o fire_n which_o if_o sudden_o we_o remove_v again_o it_o scarce_o produce_v any_o effect_n in_o it_o as_o if_o we_o will_v purify_v or_o refine_v any_o metal_n from_o its_o dross_n by_o the_o fire_n we_o must_v not_o only_o apply_v it_o intimate_o to_o the_o fire_n but_o hold_v it_o in_o it_o a_o good_a time_n that_o it_o may_v melt_v and_o the_o dross_n may_v separate_v from_o it_o so_o thou_o must_v not_o only_o turn_v thy_o soul_n to_o this_o fire_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o but_o must_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o so_o do_v and_o by_o that_o mean_v thou_o will_v quick_o begin_v to_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o its_o bless_a effect_n some_o of_o which_o effect_n as_o they_o follow_v at_o first_o upon_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v unto_o this_o divine_a principle_n i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o mention_v as_o first_o thou_o will_v by_o thy_o conversion_n thereunto_o receive_v a_o more_o clear_a and_o full_a convincement_n and_o discovery_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o sinful_a pollute_a nature_n then_o former_o so_o that_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o see_v sin_n to_o be_v exceed_o sinful_a and_o how_o thou_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o it_o as_o with_o a_o thick_a cloud_n which_o hinder_v thou_o from_o enjoy_v the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a presence_n of_o god_n yea_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o feel_v thy_o poor_a soul_n embody_a or_o incorporate_v in_o a_o very_a body_n of_o sin_n have_v many_o member_n and_o how_o near_o and_o dear_o they_o be_v unto_o thou_o some_o as_o a_o right_a eye_n some_o as_o a_o right_a hand_n etc._n etc._n then_o thou_o will_v know_v that_o such_o thing_n be_v sin_n which_o have_v place_n in_o thou_o more_o than_o by_o any_o word_n even_o of_o scripture_n for_o the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o little_a seed_n will_v great_o convince_v thou_o thereof_o and_o let_v thou_o see_v thy_o sin_n and_o the_o nature_n or_o root_n that_o bring_v they_o forth_o in_o their_o monstrous_a and_o hellish_a form_n and_o shape_n ii_o thou_o will_v also_o feel_v and_o perceive_v how_o the_o displeasure_n wrath_n and_o indignation_n of_o god_n be_v against_o every_o sin_n in_o thou_o even_o all_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n the_o whole_a body_n of_o it_o with_o all_o its_o member_n root_n and_o fruit_n and_o branch_n and_o how_o also_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v against_o man_n because_o of_o sin_n to_o which_o they_o be_v join_v and_o so_o thou_o will_v find_v how_o all_o man_n in_o a_o sinful_a and_o unrenewed_a condition_n be_v miserable_a as_o be_v under_o the_o wrath_n and_o displeasure_n of_o god_n and_o how_o sin_n be_v the_o root_n and_o fountain_n of_o the_o whole_a misery_n of_o man_n and_o how_o man_n stand_v before_o god_n in_o a_o state_n of_o judgement_n and_o condemnation_n while_o in_o sin_n embody_a and_o drown_v in_o it_o as_o it_o be_v over_o head_n and_o ear_n iii_o thou_o will_v have_v occasion_n to_o observe_v the_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o this_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n after_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n which_o will_v raise_v in_o thy_o mind_n amaze_a and_o astonish_a thought_n whereby_o thou_o will_v wonder_v and_o admire_v that_o thou_o be_v not_o consume_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o this_o wrath_n yea_o than_o thou_o will_v be_v make_v to_o see_v somewhat_o like_o that_o of_o moses_n how_o will_v find_v it_o as_o a_o sword_n a_o fire_n and_o a_o hammer_n in_o thou_o knock_v down_o and_o kill_v and_o consume_v this_o body_n of_o sin_n with_o its_o member_n yea_o a_o flame_n will_v issue_v forth_o from_o it_o and_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n kill_v and_o burn_v so_o far_o as_o it_o enter_v vi_o by_o the_o operation_n of_o this_o heavenly_a fire_n thou_o will_v find_v a_o very_a sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n in_o thy_o inward_a man_n as_o very_o as_o if_o the_o outward_a fire_n be_v burn_v in_o thy_o outward_a body_n so_o thou_o may_v conceive_v how_o thou_o will_v be_v affect_v if_o the_o tender_a and_o most_o sensible_a part_n of_o thy_o outward_a body_n be_v hold_v close_o unto_o a_o burn_a flame_n even_o such_o sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n will_v thou_o find_v inward_o for_o indeed_o thy_o soul_n dwell_v as_o real_o in_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o be_v unite_v with_o it_o as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o outward_a body_n therefore_o it_o be_v sensible_a of_o whatever_o hurt_v it_o and_o findeth_z pain_n till_o it_o have_v put_v it_o off_o and_o then_o it_o have_v no_o more_o sympathy_n with_o it_o vii_o great_a fear_n and_o terror_n will_v take_v hold_n upon_o thou_o because_o of_o these_o thing_n which_o thou_o will_v have_v occasion_n inward_o to_o observe_v the_o like_a whereof_o before_o thou_o be_v never_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o law_n than_o of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o we_o must_v not_o too_o nice_o or_o subtle_o distinguish_v they_o far_o less_o divide_v they_o for_o the_o ministration_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o spirit_n be_v never_o administer_v in_o that_o rigour_n or_o severity_n by_o the_o lord_n unto_o man_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n but_o it_o have_v somewhat_o more_o or_o less_o of_o the_o gospel_n mix_v with_o it_o even_o as_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o wrath_n he_o remember_v mercy_n and_o so_o as_o law_n and_o gospel_n judgement_n and_o mercy_n be_v mix_v and_o complicate_v together_o in_o like_a manner_n the_o effect_n be_v mix_v also_o partake_v of_o both_o but_o most_o of_o the_o former_a at_o first_o and_o for_o some_o considerable_a time_n follow_v now_o these_o and_o such_o like_a effect_n as_o do_v follow_v upon_o the_o soul_n first_o convert_v unto_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n we_o do_v usual_o comprehend_v under_o this_o term_n the_o work_n of_o judgement_n and_o as_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n have_v its_o divers_a name_n according_a to_o its_o divers_a work_n so_o in_o this_o it_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o judgement_n and_o of_o burn_v as_o in_o isa._n 4.4_o other_o also_o not_o unfit_o if_o right_o understand_v have_v call_v it_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o legal_a ministration_n in_o spirit_n also_o it_o may_v be_v call_v repentance_n or_o the_o baptism_n of_o repentance_n in_o spirit_n and_o by_o fire_n and_o though_o i_o have_v most_o insist_v upon_o compare_v the_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o this_o administration_n unto_o fire_n which_o similitude_n be_v most_o use_v in_o scripture_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o exclude_v other_o resemblance_n as_o that_o of_o water_n and_o of_o soap_n mention_v also_o in_o scripture_n and_o it_o be_v also_o liken_v unto_o that_o of_o a_o hammer_n and_o sword_n and_o that_o also_o of_o a_o cross_n very_o significant_o in_o relation_n to_o which_o term_n the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n here_o be_v fit_o call_v a_o crucifiction_n or_o be_v crucify_v oft_o also_o use_v in_o scripture_n and_o mortification_n which_o though_o it_o take_v its_o beginning_n from_o the_o law_n yet_o be_v consummate_v or_o perfect_v by_o the_o gospel_n as_o touch_v the_o inward_a trial_n or_o trouble_n the_o soul_n usual_o meet_v their_o destruction_n will_v combine_v all_o their_o force_n to_o avert_v and_o turn_v back_o the_o soul_n from_o its_o progress_n in_o this_o new_a way_n also_o they_o will_v call_v in_o for_o the_o aid_n and_o assistance_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n which_o in_o its_o corrupt_a state_n be_v a_o very_a great_a impediment_n to_o the_o poor_a soul_n in_o this_o way_n whereof_o flesh_n and_o blood_n have_v no_o like_n at_o all_o for_o it_o perceive_v it_o will_v be_v great_o straighten_a and_o restrain_v from_o its_o wont_a liberty_n it_o rrceive_v by_o sin_n and_o corruption_n and_o put_v to_o endure_v great_a and_o many_o hardship_n through_o the_o soul_n enter_v into_o the_o way_n of_o mortification_n and_o holiness_n 3._o from_o satan_n who_o as_o the_o strong_a man_n have_v former_o keep_v the_o house_n in_o peace_n and_o now_o another_o come_n to_o cast_v he_o out_o he_o will_v use_v many_o method_n and_o way_n with_o the_o soul_n to_o turn_v it_o aside_o and_o divert_v it_o from_o its_o new_a way_n that_o he_o may_v keep_v his_o place_n in_o it_o for_o it_o be_v as_o torment_v to_o he_o to_o be_v cast_v out_o and_o lose_v his_o usurp_a possession_n he_o will_v suggest_v unto_o the_o soul_n the_o novelty_n of_o its_o way_n the_o difficulty_n of_o it_o and_o how_o few_o take_v such_o a_o course_n also_o he_o will_v allege_v unto_o it_o that_o it_o may_v get_v to_o heaven_n by_o easy_a mean_n yea_o he_o will_v endeavour_v to_o persuade_v the_o poor_a soul_n that_o the_o light_n within_o be_v but_o some_o fancy_n or_o imagination_n or_o at_o best_a some_o insufficient_a thing_n and_o that_o the_o very_a work_n the_o soul_n feel_v begin_v in_o it_o by_z and_o through_o the_o power_n of_o that_o light_n be_v but_o melancholic_a imagination_n and_o that_o the_o fire_n the_o soul_n find_v kindle_v in_o it_o be_v but_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o fancy_n or_o spark_n of_o its_o own_o kindle_v or_o if_o he_o can_v prevail_v that_o way_n but_o that_o the_o soul_n still_o persist_v in_o its_o conversion_n unto_o this_o sacred_a and_o divine_a fire_n then_o especial_o when_o he_o perceive_v that_o the_o soul_n feel_v it_o great_a force_n he_o will_v be_v tempt_v to_o despair_v tell_v it_o that_o god_n have_v kindle_v this_o fire_n in_o it_o for_o its_o utter_a destruction_n and_o torment_n and_o if_o he_o can_v prevail_v thus_o than_o he_o will_v tempt_v it_o with_o hard_a thought_n of_o god_n as_o if_o the_o lord_n be_v too_o severe_a and_o rigid_a in_o use_v such_o way_n with_o it_o also_o he_o will_v endeavour_v to_o stir_v up_o in_o it_o impatience_n grudge_v and_o fret_v weariness_n and_o discontent_n and_o a_o longing_n to_o return_v unto_o the_o fleshpot_n of_o egypt_n even_o to_o its_o former_a evil_n and_o licentious_a way_n of_o life_n in_o sin_n these_o and_o many_o such_o like_a trouble_n and_o trial_n will_v the_o poor_a soul_n meet_v with_o beside_o many_o outward_a occasion_n from_o the_o world_n both_o of_o pleasure_n and_o affliction_n to_o divert_v it_o and_o turn_v it_o aside_o from_o its_o persist_v in_o its_o conversion_n unto_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n by_o reason_n of_o these_o and_o such_o like_a inward_a trial_n and_o trouble_n divers_a after_o some_o measure_n of_o a_o real_a and_o true_a application_n and_o conversion_n of_o their_o mind_n unto_o god_n and_o christ_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n have_v turn_v back_o again_o and_o not_o continue_v in_o their_o begin_a conversion_n even_o like_o some_o unwise_a and_o cowardly_a patient_n who_o at_o first_o give_v themselves_o up_o unto_o the_o physian_a to_o be_v lance_v and_o tent_a and_o scarify_v but_o afterward_o find_v the_o pain_n and_o anxiety_n thereof_o shrink_v back_o and_o choose_v rather_o to_o remain_v in_o their_o wound_n and_o distemper_n though_o it_o shall_v cost_v they_o the_o lose_n of_o their_o life_n then_o endure_v a_o little_a trouble_n and_o pain_n for_o their_o cure_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v in_o relation_n to_o this_o mal._n c._n 3._o v._n 2._o who_o may_v abide_v the_o day_n of_o his_o come_n and_o who_o shall_v stand_v when_o he_o appear_v for_o he_o shall_v be_v as_o the_o refiner_n fire_n and_o fuller_n soap_n which_o word_n do_v import_v that_o some_o may_v receive_v his_o first_o appearance_n but_o not_o abide_v it_o nor_o stand_v it_o out_o nor_o endure_v unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o fiery_a trial_n which_o come_v by_o it_o for_o to_o abide_v and_o to_o stand_v be_v word_n signify_v continuance_n and_o persist_v but_o notwithstanding_o all_o these_o thing_n thou_o must_v persist_v and_o continue_v therein_o with_o a_o stout_a and_o bold_a resolution_n which_o will_v be_v give_v thou_o of_o the_o lord_n if_o thou_o be_v not_o want_v on_o thy_o part_n to_o receive_v it_o and_o if_o thou_o persist_v not_o the_o work_n of_o thy_o salvation_n will_v be_v stop_v it_o be_v much_o better_a for_o thou_o to_o endure_v these_o inward_a trial_n and_o difficulty_n then_o to_o lose_v thy_o own_o soul_n and_o be_v cast_v into_o endless_a torment_n hereafter_o for_o thy_o negligence_n and_o carnal_a ease_n better_o thou_o go_v maim_v into_o heaven_n lose_v a_o right_a eye_n a_o right_a hand_n then_o that_o thy_o whole_a body_n shall_v go_v into_o hell_n fire_n the_o cure_n be_v worthy_a all_o the_o pain_n and_o much_o more_o a_o woman_n when_o she_o be_v in_o travail_n have_v sorrow_n and_o pain_n but_o after_o she_o have_v bring_v forth_o
in_o the_o revelation_n that_o he_o shall_v work_v lie_v and_o false_a wonder_n and_o cause_n fire_n to_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n videlicit_fw-la in_o appearance_n to_o deceive_v they_o who_o dwell_v upon_o the_o earth_n yet_o we_o have_v a_o plain_a and_o ready_a answer_n to_o this_o objection_n which_o be_v this_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n do_v send_v forth_o such_o a_o manifestation_n of_o his_o own_o light_n and_o spirit_n in_o it_o which_o discover_v infallible_o the_o work_n and_o deed_n which_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n whether_o they_o be_v of_o god_n yea_o or_o nay_o and_o put_v the_o soul_n into_o a_o capacity_n infallible_o to_o discern_v they_o and_o to_o know_v who_o they_o be_v and_o though_o the_o enemy_n be_v never_o so_o near_o in_o his_o subtle_a work_n to_o deceive_v thou_o the_o lord_n be_v as_o near_o and_o near_o to_o reveal_v he_o but_o as_o for_o they_o who_o deny_v immediate_a revelation_n in_o these_o day_n they_o leave_v the_o soul_n at_o a_o utter_a uncertainty_n that_o it_o can_v know_v the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o it_o from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o enemy_n for_o see_v they_o deny_v that_o the_o operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n be_v objective_n and_o objective_o manifest_a they_o be_v but_o as_o certain_a blind_a or_o blank_a line_n and_o impression_n draw_v upon_o paper_n which_o no_o man_n can_v read_v or_o perceive_v but_o have_v show_v this_o at_o more_o length_n elsewhere_o i_o shall_v not_o further_o proceed_v in_o it_o at_o present_a now_o if_o thou_o will_v desire_v to_o know_v the_o truth_n of_o thy_o conversion_n by_o a_o way_n prio_fw-la to_o that_o of_o effect_n which_o be_v needful_a yea_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o thou_o to_o know_v in_o the_o very_a first_o instant_n in_o which_o thou_o set_v about_o to_o perform_v thy_o act_n of_o conversion_n whether_o they_o be_v true_a yea_o or_o no_o also_o whether_o that_o be_v the_o true_a presence_n or_o manifestation_n of_o god_n unto_o which_o thou_o do_v convert_v or_o but_o that_o false_a and_o frame_a god_n abovementioned_a or_o satan_n transform_v himself_o into_o the_o likeness_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v know_v thus_o if_o it_o be_v the_o true_a god_n and_o the_o true_a christ_n he_o do_v manifest_v himself_o so_o to_o be_v for_o god_n be_v light_a and_o christ_n be_v the_o light_n of_o the_o world_n which_o lighten_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n that_o they_o may_v believe_v and_o turn_v unto_o god_n now_o as_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o know_v the_o light_n even_o that_o which_o be_v outward_a but_o by_o itself_o and_o the_o manifestation_n that_o come_v from_o it_o so_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n so_o certain_a to_o know_v god_n and_o christ_n but_o by_o the_o light_n and_o spirit_n of_o manifestation_n which_o proceed_v from_o they_o and_o of_o this_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n but_o that_o there_o be_v some_o manifestation_n of_o god_n so_o plain_o and_o evident_o set_v before_o he_o as_o that_o he_o can_v but_o be_v convince_v that_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n and_o that_o frequent_o who_o appearance_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v so_o far_o different_a from_o every_o false_a appearance_n of_o satan_n or_o any_o god_n or_o image_n of_o he_o which_o the_o soul_n make_v to_o itself_o or_o can_v make_v that_o it_o may_v very_o plain_o and_o infallible_o distinguish_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o and_o need_v not_o to_o be_v deceive_v unless_o it_o witting_o and_o wilful_o give_v up_o itself_o to_o be_v deceive_v and_o if_o thou_o ask_v wherein_o do_v the_o appearance_n of_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o so_o far_o differ_v that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o easy_o discern_v i_o answer_v in_o this_o the_o true_a appearance_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n be_v against_o every_o sin_n more_o or_o less_o in_o thou_o whether_o of_o flesh_n or_o spirit_n and_o by_o it_o thou_o be_v reprove_v of_o every_o sin_n in_o some_o measure_n yea_o and_o it_o work_v as_o fire_n against_o the_o briaâ—s_n and_o thorn_n against_o every_o sin_n in_o thou_o and_o the_o body_n and_o root_n of_o it_o though_o at_o first_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v so_o sensible_a of_o it_o as_o to_o have_v a_o particular_a observation_n of_o all_o thy_o sin_n yet_o thou_o wilâ—_n find_v it_o work_v against_o they_o all_o as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o heap_n spare_v none_o of_o they_o nor_o reconcileable_a to_o any_o of_o they_o so_o that_o what_o ever_o particular_a sin_n be_v bring_v under_o thy_o particular_a observation_n thou_o will_v find_v the_o appearance_n of_o christ_n against_o it_o as_o much_o as_o any_o but_o now_o the_o false_a god_n which_o a_o man_n make_v unto_o himself_o in_o his_o mind_n be_v very_o reconcileable_a to_o many_o sin_n which_o thou_o be_v plain_o convince_v to_o be_v sin_n and_o he_o can_v dwell_v with_o they_o and_o let_v they_o flourish_v and_o grow_v large_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o not_o be_v a_o devour_a fire_n against_o they_o yea_o the_o false_a and_o counterfeit_a god_n be_v a_o enemy_n tâ—_n no_o sin_n at_o all_o and_o will_v never_o reprove_v or_o dissuade_v thou_o from_o any_o sin_n but_o o_o 〈…〉_z thou_o and_o this_o be_v the_o hypocrite_n 〈◊〉_d and_o the_o high_a fly_v notionist_n god_n who_o they_o in_o some_o sort_n stand_v in_o awe_n to_o offend_v as_o to_o some_o â—ross_a outward_a act_n or_o even_o some_o inward_a also_o because_o they_o have_v shape_v he_o in_o such_o and_o such_o a_o form_n as_o be_v contrary_n in_o appearance_n to_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n but_o as_o for_o thou_o love_v he_o that_o reprove_v every_o sin_n in_o thought_n or_o desire_n word_n or_o work_n and_o be_v dreadful_a unto_o every_o transgressor_n more_o or_o less_o yea_o be_v as_o a_o devour_a fire_n against_o they_o for_o that_o be_v the_o true_a god_n now_o this_o appearance_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v observe_v to_o manifest_v itself_o in_o a_o little_a small_a seed_n the_o least_o of_o all_o seed_n in_o the_o very_a inward_o of_o thy_o heart_n which_o be_v meek_a and_o holy_a and_o pure_a and_o harmless_a and_o be_v contrary_n unto_o nothing_o but_o sin_n can_v be_v reconcile_v with_o any_o thing_n save_o sin_n but_o with_o no_o sin_n in_o any_o measure_n i_o have_v find_v it_o with_o i_o the_o more_o to_o insist_v on_o this_o particular_a for_o that_o i_o certain_o know_v there_o be_v many_o who_o be_v woeful_o bewitch_v with_o a_o mystery_n of_o iniquity_n in_o relation_n to_o this_o matter_n be_v like_o capernanum_fw-la exalt_v to_o the_o heaven_n as_o it_o be_v in_o their_o notion_n about_o god_n so_o as_o to_o think_v they_o daily_o contemplate_v and_o enjoy_v he_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o idol_n and_o by_o the_o child_n of_o light_n they_o be_v see_v and_o feel_v to_o be_v it_o darkness_n and_o the_o seed_n be_v feel_v to_o suffer_v in_o they_o and_o to_o â—e_v in_o the_o very_a bond_n of_o death_n notwithstanding_o all_o their_o high_a and_o lofty_a imagination_n now_o if_o the_o seed_n be_v raise_v in_o thou_o so_o that_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o become_v form_v though_o but_o a_o little_a thou_o will_v feel_v it_o and_o its_o power_n as_o manifest_v to_o move_v stir_v and_o spring_n in_o thou_o as_o ever_o the_o mother_n feel_v the_o child_n to_o spring_v in_o her_o womb_n so_o that_o thou_o can_v no_o less_o doubt_v of_o the_o one_o than_o she_o can_v of_o the_o other_o and_o so_o by_o the_o stir_n and_o move_n thereof_o thou_o will_v begin_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o spiritual_a refreshment_n and_o joy_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n chap._n viii_o wherein_o divers_a advertisement_n and_o caution_n be_v give_v unto_o the_o soul_n in_o relation_n unto_o its_o apply_v itself_o unto_o work_n or_o operative_a exercise_n inward_a or_o outward_a through_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o we_o be_v his_o workmanship_n say_v the_o apostle_n create_v unto_o christ_n jesus_n unto_o good_a work_n that_o we_o shall_v walk_v in_o they_o so_o that_o the_o lord_n give_v not_o unto_o any_o man_n the_o be_v of_o a_o holy_a life_n with_o its_o power_n in_o vain_a or_o for_o no_o effect_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o they_o to_o bring_v forth_o good_a work_n even_o as_o the_o husbandman_n plant_v his_o vine_n and_o other_o tree_n that_o they_o may_v bring_v forth_o fruit._n we_o must_v improve_v and_o make_v use_n of_o our_o master_n money_n to_o profit_v withal_o that_o our_o talon_n may_v increase_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o he_o who_o have_v give_v it_o unto_o we_o and_o to_o our_o own_o happiness_n and_o comfort_n
the_o inferior_a power_n and_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v also_o therewithal_o move_v and_o with_o the_o word_n which_o proceed_v therefrom_o it_o be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o comfortable_a in_o its_o place_n but_o not_o too_o much_o to_o be_v look_v after_o but_o we_o be_v to_o be_v careful_a that_o we_o keep_v they_o in_o such_o steadfastness_n as_o not_o to_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v move_v simple_o or_o bare_o by_o mere_a word_n or_o outward_a work_n when_o the_o holy_a life_n do_v not_o move_v upon_o they_o and_o that_o principal_o for_o all_o such_o motion_n be_v hurtful_a and_o not_o profitable_a it_o be_v the_o coal_n from_o the_o altar_n that_o be_v to_o say_v such_o a_o heat_n or_o warmth_n that_o come_v from_o the_o holy_a life_n thâ—â—_n do_v only_o work_v the_o true_a impression_n on_o the_o affection_n whether_o by_o word_n or_o without_o they_o or_o do_v only_o qualify_v and_o concoct_v they_o so_o to_o speak_v after_o the_o right_a manner_n work_v out_o the_o evil_a crude_a and_o beastly_a humour_n and_o disposition_n out_o of_o they_o vi_o thou_o be_v also_o to_o know_v that_o though_o thy_o present_a condition_n admit_v thou_o to_o do_v some_o thing_n yea_o divers_a work_n both_o inward_a and_o outward_a pertain_v to_o a_o holy_a life_n as_o be_v come_v in_o measure_n to_o be_v a_o partaker_n thereof_o yet_o thou_o be_v in_o this_o time_n of_o thy_o weakness_n and_o childhood_n in_o the_o spiritual_a life_n more_o to_o be_v passive_a than_o active_a except_o as_o to_o the_o simple_a act_n of_o conversion_n wherein_o thou_o be_v constant_o so_o much_o as_o possible_a to_o be_v find_v for_o thereby_o thou_o will_v be_v still_o drink_v in_o from_o the_o live_a fountain_n the_o water_n of_o life_n by_o which_o thou_o will_v live_v and_o increase_v more_o and_o more_o in_o the_o holy_a life_n so_o as_o to_o grow_v up_o from_o childhood_n unto_o youth-head_n and_o from_o that_o unto_o a_o perfect_a man_n in_o christ_n jesus_n therefore_o it_o will_v be_v altogether_o fit_a and_o needful_a for_o thou_o to_o be_v often_o repeat_v these_o former_a step_n of_o conversion_n and_o persist_v therein_o in_o great_a passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n not_o only_o from_o all_o evil_a thing_n but_o even_o from_o these_o which_o be_v not_o clear_a unto_o thou_o to_o be_v good_a or_o at_o least_o harmless_a and_o innocent_a and_o as_o thou_o know_v that_o the_o several_a age_n and_o state_n of_o a_o man_n of_o infancy_n childhood_n youth-head_n and_o perfect_a manhood_n have_v their_o several_a work_n and_o exercise_n proper_a unto_o they_o beside_o what_o be_v proper_a unto_o all_o these_o four_o so_o it_o be_v much_o what_o here_o for_o indeed_o the_o spiritual_a man_n also_o have_v his_o four_o state_n as_o his_o infancy_n his_o childhood_n youth-head_n and_o perfect_a manhood_n now_o if_o thou_o be_v yet_o but_o in_o the_o infancy_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n thou_o can_v do_v but_o little_a unless_o to_o turn_v thou_o to_o thy_o mother_n breast_n which_o have_v conceive_v thou_o that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o the_o divine_a and_o holy_a life_n and_o abide_v in_o thy_o conversion_n thereunto_o drink_v in_o the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o thou_o may_v grow_v thereby_o and_o if_o thou_o be_v come_v up_o to_o a_o state_n of_o childhood_n as_o out_o of_o infancy_n yet_o thou_o can_v as_o yet_o not_o do_v many_o nor_o great_a thing_n but_o this_o be_v a_o good_a time_n for_o thou_o to_o go_v unto_o the_o school_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o learn_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n in_o his_o immediate_a teach_n so_o as_o to_o drink_v in_o a_o solid_a sound_n and_o digest_v knowledge_n of_o they_o in_o some_o measure_n before_o thou_o much_o speak_v of_o they_o to_o other_o be_v swift_a to_o hear_v but_o slow_a to_o speak_v but_o if_o thou_o be_v come_v up_o to_o the_o state_n of_o a_o young_a man_n yet_o thou_o can_v not_o do_v all_o those_o thing_n which_o a_o man_n of_o perfect_a age_n can_v neither_o be_v it_o give_v nor_o require_v of_o thou_o vii_o be_v very_o mindful_a to_o regard_v thy_o own_o measure_n of_o life_n so_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o draw_v forth_o or_o lift_v up_o to_o do_v great_a thing_n or_o any_o thing_n in_o a_o great_a or_o high_a strain_n than_o thy_o present_a ability_n of_o life_n permit_v for_o if_o thou_o bend_v or_o screw_v or_o wind_v up_o the_o power_n of_o thy_o soul_n too_o high_a above_o thy_o measure_n yea_o if_o in_o any_o thing_n above_o it_o it_o will_v much_o mar_v and_o spoil_v the_o work_n that_o thou_o be_v about_o and_o displease_v the_o lord_n and_o grieve_v his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o life_n even_o as_o the_o wind_a of_o some_o string_n or_o string_n on_o a_o musical_a instrument_n above_o what_o may_v keep_v in_o true_a concord_n with_o other_o string_n do_v quite_o spoil_v the_o harmony_n and_o render_v it_o ungrateful_a unto_o discern_a ear_n yea_o many_o hereby_o have_v suffer_v great_a loss_n and_o bring_v many_o grievous_a burden_n upon_o that_o holy_a life_n and_o also_o upon_o their_o own_o soul_n in_o so_o do_v and_o let_v not_o the_o great_a measure_n of_o another_o be_v a_o occasion_n to_o draw_v thou_o forth_o from_o thy_o own_o as_o seek_v to_o do_v thing_n equal_o with_o he_o or_o to_o go_v beyond_o he_o also_o to_o mind_n and_o reflect_v by_o a_o inward_a observation_n when_o the_o life_n or_o power_n thereof_o begin_v to_o cease_v or_o shut_v up_o that_o so_o thou_o may_v therein_o also_o follow_v they_o so_o as_o to_o cease_v at_o their_o cease_n to_o be_v shut_v up_o with_o they_o and_o open_v with_o they_o and_o keep_v time_n and_o measure_n and_o touch_n with_o they_o that_o thou_o may_v not_o be_v leave_v do_v alone_o for_o if_o so_o thou_o be_v not_o do_v the_o lords_n work_n but_o thy_o own_o viii_o thou_o be_v to_o learn_v to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o power_n give_v thou_o from_o the_o holy_a life_n to_o do_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o that_o power_n for_o though_o the_o power_n may_v be_v say_v after_o a_o sort_n always_o to_o remain_v with_o thou_o while_o the_o life_n itself_o remain_v yet_o thou_o have_v not_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o power_n at_o thy_o will_n and_o dispose_v and_o so_o thou_o may_v observe_v a_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o thy_o exercise_v thy_o natural_a power_n and_o these_o spiritual_a for_o the_o natural_a thou_o can_v use_v when_o thou_o wilt_v as_o to_o speak_v write_v sing_v natural_o etc._n etc._n but_o thou_o can_v not_o use_v the_o spiritual_a power_n though_o they_o be_v in_o thou_o in_o thy_o own_o will_n therefore_o thou_o be_v to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v give_v thou_o the_o use_n of_o they_o by_o the_o new_a and_o actual_a influence_n of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o they_o which_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o key_n which_o open_v they_o otherwise_o they_o be_v shut_v up_o and_o lock_v ix_o and_o last_o with_o he_o and_o thus_o the_o poor_a soul_n be_v set_v as_o betwixt_o two_o contrary_a stream_n the_o one_o seek_v to_o carry_v it_o one_o way_n and_o the_o other_o to_o carry_v it_o to_o the_o contrary_a and_o on_o this_o account_v it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n sometime_o obey_v the_o one_o and_o sometime_o the_o other_o sometime_o it_o be_v carry_v forward_o and_o sometime_o backward_o to_o wrath_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o cry_v forth_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n upon_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n even_o therein_o and_o there_o through_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a breath_n or_o spirit_n which_o have_v and_o have_v a_o most_o effectual_a influence_n upon_o both_o man_n and_o the_o creation_n for_o their_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o few_o example_n rom._n 6.2_o how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o know_v you_o not_o that_o as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v baptize_v into_o jesus_n christ_n to_o live_v in_o much_o sin_n and_o unholiness_n and_o speak_v peace_n to_o themselves_o therein_o because_o of_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o they_o and_o now_o i_o shall_v sum_v they_o can_v improve_v they_o aright_o i._o as_o his_o come_v birth_n suffering_n death_n resurrection_n etc._n etc._n be_v present_v and_o set_v before_o we_o in_o the_o evidence_n and_o virtue_n of_o his_o own_o light_n and_o spirit_n in_o our_o heart_n so_o it_o be_v make_v a_o great_a occasion_n to_o strengthen_v both_o our_o faith_n in_o god_n and_o our_o love_n towards_o he_o forasmuch_o as_o our_o lord_n god_n the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v give_v by_o his_o outward_a come_n etc._n etc._n as_o aforesaid_a a_o very_a great_a and_o large_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n and_o good_a will_n towards_o all_o man_n for_o their_o salvation_n and_o of_o his_o patience_n and_o long-suffering_a in_o permit_v man_n so_o to_o use_v his_o own_o dear_a son_n which_o be_v as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v unto_o himself_o yea_o herein_o he_o give_v a_o most_o convince_a testimony_n how_o he_o have_v bear_v and_o suffer_v with_o wonderful_a long-suffering_a the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n which_o strike_v against_o his_o inward_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n in_o all_o age_n and_o generation_n before_o the_o wound_a and_o crucify_a it_o in_o they_o as_o now_o they_o do_v against_o he_o in_o the_o outward_a by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v great_o convince_v that_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v their_o salvation_n in_o so_o bear_v and_o suffer_v they_o for_o have_v he_o not_o intend_v love_n to_o they_o herein_o he_o may_v have_v ease_v himself_o of_o his_o adversary_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o altogether_o deliver_v that_o tender_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n from_o its_o suffering_n in_o they_o and_o bring_v intolerable_a suffering_n upon_o the_o transgressor_n themselves_o also_o herein_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o great_a testimony_n of_o his_o power_n to_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o though_o he_o deliver_v up_o his_o son_n to_o suffer_v most_o deep_a affliction_n in_o and_o under_o sinner_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n he_o raise_v he_o up_o again_o even_o from_o death_n and_o do_v manifest_o set_v he_o over_o all_o his_o adversary_n according_a to_o the_o work_n of_o which_o mighty_a power_n he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v unto_o the_o uttermost_a all_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o and_o so_o these_o thing_n be_v inward_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v indeed_o very_o forcible_a and_o prevail_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o it_o both_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o to_o rest_v and_o stay_v its_o faith_n upon_o he_o for_o its_o full_a and_o perfect_a salvation_n as_o also_o to_o work_v and_o beget_v love_n unto_o he_o in_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o wonderful_a love_n of_o god_n as_o manifest_v itself_o even_o so_o in_o the_o outward_a ii_o and_o yet_o more_o particular_o the_o come_n suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o present_v by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o aforesaid_a have_v a_o very_a special_a influence_n to_o kindle_v most_o ardent_a love_n in_o it_o towards_o he_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o love_n of_o his_o so_o wonderful_o manifest_v in_o the_o outward_a whereby_o for_o the_o soul_n save_v from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n he_o so_o humble_v himself_o by_o so_o many_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o bear_v such_o indignity_n and_o suffering_n as_o never_o any_o one_o do_v and_o all_o in_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o for_o it_o and_o for_o its_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v manifest_a in_o the_o outward_a body_n and_o suffer_v so_o deep_o therein_o even_o for_o the_o deliver_v our_o outward_a body_n also_o from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v as_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n as_o it_o be_v himself_o tell_v it_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n how_o he_o have_v humble_v himself_o and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o it_o be_v strong_a and_o prevail_a occasion_n to_o work_v most_o ardent_a and_o dear_a love_n in_o the_o soul_n towards_o he_o and_o his_o spirit_n and_o towards_o the_o father_n also_o who_o free_a gift_n of_o love_n he_o be_v iii_o and_o they_o have_v indeed_o a_o great_a influence_n when_o present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o work_v in_o our_o heart_n true_a and_o real_a repentance_n from_o all_o our_o sin_n yea_o and_o a_o perfect_a and_o universal_a hatred_n against_o they_o as_o have_v a_o sense_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o his_o suffering_n yea_o his_o deep_a and_o heavy_a suffering_n even_o in_o his_o soul_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v through_o the_o burden_n of_o our_o iniquity_n which_o he_o then_o do_v bear_v so_o that_o the_o wound_n he_o get_v in_o his_o bless_a body_n with_o the_o nail_n and_o the_o spear_n and_o the_o thorn_n and_o the_o violent_a hand_n of_o man_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o these_o wound_n he_o have_v in_o his_o righteous_a soul_n and_o
suffer_v death_n for_o sin_n give_v we_o a_o most_o convince_a example_n that_o we_o shall_v die_v unto_o it_o and_o suffer_v it_o no_o more_o to_o live_v in_o we_o now_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v and_o remember_v that_o in_o all_o these_o step_n the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n etc._n etc._n have_v these_o influence_n upon_o we_o not_o as_o they_o be_v present_v unto_o we_o bare_o in_o our_o own_o spirit_n or_o as_o we_o do_v bring_v they_o to_o our_o remembrance_n thereby_o and_o so_o make_v a_o work_n upon_o ourselves_o in_o our_o own_o thought_n and_o motion_n for_o in_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v never_o profit_v our_o own_o soul_n either_o in_o die_v unto_o sin_n or_o live_v in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n indeed_o we_o may_v thereby_o raise_v spark_n of_o our_o own_o kindle_v in_o the_o affectionate_a part_n and_o work_v some_o effect_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o may_v be_v a_o shadow_n or_o likeness_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o can_v never_o be_v the_o thing_n themselves_o but_o as_o they_o be_v inward_o present_v to_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o apply_v thereby_o and_o that_o instant_o and_o continual_o for_o it_o be_v his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n alone_o which_o both_o give_v the_o true_a understanding_n of_o the_o use_n and_o end_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o also_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n the_o live_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o they_o and_o in_o a_o live_n and_o effectual_a way_n do_v only_o and_o can_v apply_v they_o unto_o the_o soul_n and_o whole_a power_n thereof_o for_o the_o work_v such_o suitable_a effect_n and_o impression_n as_o be_v proper_a thereunto_o but_o some_o may_v say_v see_v the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v know_v and_o improve_v by_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o effectual_a to_o work_v faith_n and_o love_n in_o it_o towards_o god_n and_o for_o its_o mortification_n unto_o sin_n and_o live_n in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n will_v it_o not_o therefore_o seem_v that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o every_o one_o for_o the_o attainment_n of_o these_o thing_n for_o how_o can_v a_o soul_n believe_v that_o god_n will_v be_v gracious_a unto_o it_o or_o be_v reconcileable_a with_o it_o but_o as_o it_o look_v upon_o that_o testimony_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o love_n in_o send_v his_o belove_a son_n outward_o into_o the_o world_n to_o suffer_v and_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n in_o order_n unto_o our_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n also_o how_o can_v it_o love_n god_n with_o that_o purity_n and_o fervency_n of_o love_n which_o be_v according_a to_o the_o gospel_n but_o as_o it_o regard_v and_o consider_v that_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n in_o the_o come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o outward_a answ_n indeed_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n be_v of_o very_a bless_a use_n and_o advantage_n and_o all_o who_o have_v it_o shall_v be_v very_o thankful_a unto_o god_n who_o have_v give_v we_o this_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n goodwill_n long-suffering_a and_o power_n in_o the_o outward_a come_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o the_o more_o abundant_a help_a and_o enable_v we_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o love_v he_o yet_o this_o i_o say_v though_o express_a knowledge_n of_o his_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n be_v very_o profitable_a to_o beget_v faith_n and_o love_n in_o man_n towards_o god_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o aught_o to_o be_v high_o value_v in_o its_o place_n nevertheless_o this_o express_a knowledge_n be_v not_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o faith_n and_o love_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n may_v have_v and_o have_v a_o real_a and_o true_a influence_n upon_o they_o who_o know_v it_o not_o express_o for_o see_v he_o have_v taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n and_o give_v his_o life_n a_o ransom_n for_o all_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o it_o shall_v have_v a_o influence_n upon_o all_o yea_o the_o apostle_n express_o mention_n what_o it_o be_v rom._n 5.18_o 19_o how_o that_o by_o the_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n of_o christ_n the_o free_a gift_n be_v come_v upon_o all_o to_o justification_n of_o life_n look_v then_o as_o many_o of_o adam_n posterity_n suffer_v disadvantage_n by_o his_o disobedience_n who_o never_o know_v it_o express_o so_o why_o may_v not_o many_o receive_v a_o advantage_n by_o christ_n the_o second_o adam_n obedience_n even_o in_o the_o outward_a who_o never_o know_v it_o express_o yea_o certain_o they_o have_v for_o infant_n and_o the_o dumb_a and_o deaf_a who_o have_v not_o that_o express_a knowledge_n for_o now_o christ_n be_v inward_o come_v in_o a_o seed_n of_o life_n and_o light_a in_o all_o which_o be_v the_o word_n of_o reconciliation_n by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v reconcile_v with_o god_n as_o they_o join_v and_o apply_v their_o mind_n thereunto_o and_o in_o this_o the_o lord_n god_n do_v give_v a_o sufficient_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n mercy_n goodwill_n long_o suffer_v and_o power_n unto_o every_o man_n for_o his_o salvation_n whereby_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o he_o to_o attain_v unto_o the_o true_a faith_n in_o god_n and_o the_o true_a love_n towards_o he_o even_o according_a to_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o this_o holy_a seed_n the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o how_o he_o bear_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v intercession_n or_o atonement_n unto_o god_n may_v be_v learn_v in_o some_o measure_n with_o many_o other_o thing_n concern_v christ_n in_o relation_n to_o he_o and_o his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o the_o outward_a which_o be_v a_o outward_a and_o visible_a testimony_n of_o his_o inward_a do_n and_o suffering_n in_o all_o age_n in_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o indeed_o we_o find_v that_o this_o be_v only_o the_o true_a and_o effectual_a way_n of_o know_v the_o use_n and_o work_v of_o his_o come_v and_o suffering_n and_o death_n in_o the_o outward_a by_o turn_v and_o have_v our_o mind_n turn_v inward_o unto_o himself_o near_o and_o in_o our_o heart_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n to_o know_v by_o a_o inward_a feel_n and_o good_a experience_n his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o we_o by_o be_v make_v conformable_a thereunto_o in_o which_o holy_a seed_n as_o it_o arise_v in_o we_o such_o a_o clear_a light_n shine_v forth_o in_o our_o heart_n as_o give_v unto_o we_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o the_o use_n of_o his_o inward_a do_n and_o suffering_n hence_o also_o such_o a_o precious_a sweet_a and_o powerful_a life_n spring_v up_o from_o and_o in_o the_o same_o holy_a seed_n which_o do_v with_o much_o sweetness_n and_o comfort_n enable_v we_o to_o follow_v his_o example_n in_o the_o outward_a in_o faith_n in_o obedience_n in_o love_n in_o purity_n in_o patience_n in_o godliness_n in_o righteousness_n and_o temperance_n and_o all_o other_o thing_n wherein_o we_o be_v require_v to_o imitate_v he_o and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a loss_n we_o find_v people_n at_o general_o who_o seek_v to_o know_v the_o virtue_n and_o use_v of_o his_o come_v do_n and_o suffering_n in_o the_o outward_a by_o what_o they_o can_v outward_o hear_v or_o read_v of_o he_o while_o as_o they_o remain_v estrange_v from_o his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o yet_o they_o can_v never_o know_v the_o same_o but_o in_o this_o and_o oh_o at_o what_o great_a pain_n have_v many_o poor_a soul_n be_v to_o imitate_v christ_n in_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n by_o set_v he_o as_o their_o example_n before_o he_o but_o mere_o as_o the_o letter_n or_o history_n declare_v of_o he_o by_o which_o way_n yet_o they_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o the_o true_a imitation_n or_o follow_v of_o he_o for_o
whence_o it_o be_v what_o be_v its_o tendency_n and_o wherefore_o it_o be_v give_v they_o if_o then_o thou_o be_v but_o diligent_a in_o thy_o mind_n to_o observe_v and_o give_v attendance_n to_o the_o inward_a operation_n motion_n and_o shining_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n in_o thou_o and_o breathe_n of_o the_o divine_a life_n in_o the_o silence_n and_o quietness_n of_o thy_o soul_n out_o of_o the_o many_o wander_n vain_a thought_n and_o imagination_n of_o thy_o mind_n thou_o will_v certain_o come_v to_o a_o true_a measure_n of_o clear_a discern_a of_o the_o true_a divine_a principle_n life_n and_o light_n and_o of_o the_o operation_n thereof_o so_o as_o to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o all_o that_o which_o be_v but_o natural_a and_o carnal_a as_o also_o from_o all_o that_o be_v of_o satan_n in_o his_o cunning_a transforming_n and_o although_o in_o the_o beginning_n it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a to_o thou_o to_o attain_v to_o that_o perfect_a and_o absolute_a inward_a silence_n of_o mind_n from_o all_o thy_o own_o thought_n and_o imagination_n which_o will_v afterward_o become_v easy_a and_o familiar_a unto_o thou_o as_o thou_o do_v experience_n any_o considerable_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n yet_o as_o thou_o presse_v after_o it_o thou_o will_v find_v they_o self_n help_v by_o the_o lord_n to_o come_v into_o some_o measure_n of_o true_a silence_n and_o although_o thou_o can_v not_o say_v that_o all_o vain_a foolish_a thought_n and_o idle_a imagination_n be_v put_v out_o of_o thy_o mind_n yet_o if_o a_o considerable_a part_n of_o they_o be_v go_v and_o evanished_a so_o that_o thy_o mind_n be_v somewhat_o more_o cool_a and_o quiet_a and_o still_o and_o empty_a of_o such_o thing_n than_o it_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v here_o thou_o will_v find_v thyself_o at_o some_o advantage_n and_o in_o some_o capacity_n to_o discern_v the_o divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o even_o as_o it_o be_v in_o this_o imperfect_a state_n of_o silence_n or_o half_a silence_n as_o we_o may_v call_v it_o to_o help_v thou_o then_o a_o little_a further_o in_o this_o inquiry_n and_o search_n that_o thou_o may_v come_v to_o know_v discern_v and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o in_o thou_o which_o be_v indeed_o a_o very_a necessary_a knowledge_n and_o without_o which_o thou_o be_v liable_a to_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o false_a rest_n and_o build_v upon_o a_o false_a foundation_n as_o many_o do_v at_o this_o day_n take_v the_o natural_a light_n and_o principle_n for_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a and_o so_o what_o the_o socinian_o and_o pelagian_n be_v in_o profession_n who_o profess_v no_o high_a principle_n in_o they_o necessary_a than_o the_o natural_a these_o man_n be_v whatever_o they_o profess_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o have_v and_o be_v illuminate_v and_o lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n real_o in_o practice_n therefore_o that_o thou_o may_v avoid_v this_o snare_n and_o come_v to_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n and_o principle_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o i_o shall_v brief_o point_v at_o some_o distinguish_a mark_n and_o character_n whereby_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a principle_n be_v true_o distinguishable_a from_o that_o which_o be_v but_o humane_a and_o natural_a as_o 1._o the_o light_n influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o humane_a and_o natural_a principle_n be_v cold_a saint_n and_o dead_a but_o that_o of_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a warm_a live_a and_o powerful_a and_o the_o warmth_n power_n and_o life_n thereof_o reach_v not_o only_o the_o brain_n or_o head_n or_o the_o animal_n part_n and_o affection_n which_o the_o natural_a can_v do_v and_o often_o do_v but_o it_o reach_v also_o the_o heart_n and_o most_o inward_a part_n even_o the_o most_o inward_a affection_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v of_o a_o heavenly_a and_o divine_a nature_n as_o the_o principle_n be_v of_o which_o it_o proceed_v it_o be_v say_v of_o and_o stupid_a soul_n he_o cause_v it_o to_o hear_v and_o raise_v up_o some_o small_a sense_n of_o the_o same_o in_o it_o at_o that_o present_a time_n although_o soon_o after_o darkness_n and_o death_n do_v prevail_v over_o they_o again_o and_o they_o forget_v any_o such_o experience_n as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o have_v it_o how_o do_v god_n speak_v unto_o cain_n and_o expostulate_v with_o he_o we_o read_v not_o that_o it_o be_v by_o a_o outward_a voice_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o need_n to_o suppose_v that_o when_o god_n reprove_v he_o for_o his_o anger_n against_o his_o ready_a to_o judge_n himself_o in_o the_o general_n a_o great_a sinner_n yet_o there_o be_v many_o time_n many_o particular_a sin_n whereof_o he_o be_v guilty_a that_o he_o will_v not_o reprove_v himself_o for_o by_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o or_o argument_n draw_v from_o scripture_n but_o will_v rather_o justify_v and_o defend_v himself_o for_o the_o natural_a light_n and_o natural_a seem_v unpleasant_a yet_o in_o the_o unconvert_v and_o corrupt_a state_n man_n be_v true_o sensible_a of_o the_o inward_a work_n and_o operation_n and_o appearance_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a principle_n of_o his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n in_o judgement_n and_o wrath_n and_o terror_n so_o that_o they_o can_v feel_v the_o word_n of_o life_n in_o they_o as_o it_o prick_v and_o wound_v such_o perfect_a contrariety_n to_o sin_n as_o be_v itself_o exceed_o corrupt_v and_o defile_v therewith_o 4._o the_o divine_a principle_n work_v most_o powerful_o and_o sensible_o when_o the_o mind_n be_v silent_a and_o do_v rest_n from_o its_o own_o mere_a natural_a work_n and_o especial_o from_o its_o soar_a imagination_n and_o lofty_a reason_n and_o although_o in_o the_o unconverted_a state_n it_o seldom_o or_o never_o be_v perfect_o silent_a yet_o at_o sometime_o it_o be_v more_o silent_a quiet_a and_o calm_a than_o at_o other_o time_n for_o even_o the_o sea_n do_v not_o always_o rage_n although_o it_o always_o have_v some_o motion_n 5._o the_o divine_a principle_n never_o work_v at_o or_o in_o the_o will_n of_o man_n but_o only_o in_o the_o will_n of_o god_n whereas_o the_o corrupt_a and_o deprave_a will_n of_o man_n can_v set_v the_o natural_a principle_n on_o work_n when_o and_o how_o it_o please_v 6._o there_o be_v somewhat_o that_o be_v unexpressible_a and_o can_v be_v name_v in_o word_n but_o can_v be_v inward_o feel_v both_o in_o the_o divine_a principle_n and_o all_o its_o operation_n whereby_o through_o a_o innate_a self-evidencing_a power_n and_o authority_n it_o do_v real_o distinguish_v itself_o and_o may_v be_v real_o discern_v as_o distinct_a from_o the_o natural_a and_o humane_a principle_n and_o all_o its_o work_n as_o also_o from_o of_o its_o effect_n in_o they_o also_o see_v there_o be_v counterfeit_a effect_n as_o a_o counterfeit_a holiness_n purity_n humility_n etc._n etc._n the_o true_a effect_n can_v be_v infallible_o
