no_o lifeless_a or_o spiritless_a worship_n yet_o we_o still_o affirm_v that_o all_o mankind_n ought_v to_o worship_n god_n and_o call_v upon_o he_o even_o all_o the_o wicked_a and_o unrenewed_a person_n as_o well_o as_o the_o renew_a so_o that_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o worship_n itself_o we_o have_v no_o controversy_n whether_o it_o be_v due_a unto_o god_n by_o all_o mankind_n but_o the_o according_a to_o the_o quaker_n they_o be_v but_o the_o mere_a bare_a word_n of_o a_o creature_n hence_o he_o infer_v that_o the_o penman_n of_o the_o scripture_n of_o all_o man_n in_o the_o world_n must_v have_v be_v the_o great_a cheat_n and_o arche_v impostor_n etc._n etc._n but_o see_v he_o produce_v no_o express_a testimony_n out_o of_o the_o write_n of_o that_o people_n for_o such_o assertion_n he_o be_v not_o to_o be_v believe_v nor_o do_v it_o follow_v that_o because_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o saint_n word_n that_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o also_o the_o word_n of_o god_n even_o unto_o all_o who_o hear_v or_o read_v they_o at_o least_o mediate_o and_o remote_o although_o none_o but_o such_o as_o believe_v do_v receive_v they_o as_o such_o which_o yet_o be_v only_o and_o alone_o the_o â—ault_n of_o those_o unbelieve_a person_n because_o they_o reject_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o do_v certify_v or_o assure_v unto_o we_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v receive_v a_o fair_a and_o charitable_a construction_n and_o not_o present_o be_v judge_v to_o be_v gross_a atheism_n for_o although_o the_o scripture_n give_v a_o narration_n of_o divers_a history_n as_o also_o of_o precept_n prohibition_n and_o mystery_n of_o faith_n as_o christ_n his_o come_n in_o the_o flesh_n his_o be_v bear_v of_o a_o virgin_n his_o be_v crucify_a and_o bury_v his_o resurrection_n and_o ascension_n the_o which_o history_n and_o thing_n aforemention_v albeit_o they_o can_v proper_o be_v call_v the_o saint_n experience_n yet_o the_o divine_a inspiration_n and_o revelation_n which_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n have_v immediate_o of_o those_o thing_n be_v true_o their_o experience_n and_o let_v we_o see_v if_o i._n a._n will_v deny_v it_o or_o if_o he_o do_v may_v it_o not_o be_v more_o just_o retort_v upon_o he_o that_o he_o and_o not_o the_o quaker_n deny_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v from_o divine_a inspiration_n or_o can_v he_o say_v that_o although_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n have_v divine_a inspiration_n and_o immediate_a revelation_n yet_o they_o have_v no_o experience_n of_o the_o same_o and_o that_o we_o call_v the_o scripture_n sometime_o the_o saint_n word_n yet_o not_o deny_v they_o in_o a_o true_a sense_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n i._n a._n can_v no_o more_o just_o blame_v we_o than_o paul_n and_o john_n who_o call_v their_o own_o preach_v and_o write_v and_o that_o of_o their_o brethren_n the_o witness_n and_o teach_v of_o man_n so_o that_o paul_n and_o the_o apostle_n word_n be_v both_o the_o word_n of_o man_n and_o yet_o also_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o wit_n mediate_o declare_v unto_o they_o by_o the_o apostle_n now_o they_o who_o faith_n stand_v in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n receive_v they_o as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o who_o come_v not_o to_o that_o power_n to_o believe_v in_o it_o they_o be_v but_o unto_o such_o as_o the_o word_n of_o man_n which_o as_o be_v already_o say_v be_v only_o and_o alone_o the_o fault_n of_o such_o unbelieve_a person_n there_o yet_o remain_v two_o part_n or_o branch_n of_o the_o three_o query_n to_o which_o i._o a._n for_o all_o his_o pretend_a survey_n have_v give_v no_o more_o satisfaction_n than_o to_o any_o of_o the_o former_a the_o first_o be_v whether_o all_o that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o scripture_n from_o genesis_n to_o revelation_n be_v a_o rule_n of_o faith_n and_o manner_n to_o this_o he_o only_o answer_v in_o general_a that_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o believe_v all_o scripture_n enunciation_n from_o the_o begin_n to_o the_o eâ—d_n which_o we_o do_v ready_o grant_v and_o that_o therefore_o it_o may_v well_o be_v call_v a_o historical_a rule_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o the_o moral_a law_n with_o whatsoever_o be_v of_o common_a equity_n or_o whatever_o enjoin_v any_o piece_n of_o religious_a worship_n under_o the_o new_a testament_n do_v belong_v to_o christian_n of_o our_o call_v and_o judicial_a so_o call_v also_o see_v there_o be_v divers_a thing_n that_o be_v command_v and_o practise_v by_o the_o apostle_n and_o primitive_a christian_n under_o the_o new_a testament_n whether_o all_o these_o do_v oblige_v we_o now_o yea_o or_o nay_o as_o for_o example_n the_o wash_v one_o
where_o he_o allege_v their_o word_n say_v all_o man_n ought_v first_o to_o wait_n until_o they_o receive_v the_o spirit_n in_o truth_n then_o in_o the_o same_o truth_n to_o worship_n god_n in_o spirit_n who_o be_v a_o spirit_n so_o we_o see_v by_o i._o a._n his_o own_o confession_n the_o quaker_n teach_v that_o all_o man_n ought_v to_o worship_n god_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o they_o unto_o god_n and_o that_o this_o be_v no_o new_a or_o invent_a way_n of_o the_o quaker_n so_o call_v read_v isaiah_n 1._o 16_o 17_o 18._o where_o the_o lord_n by_o the_o prophet_n bid_v first_o that_o they_o wash_v and_o be_v clean_a and_o put_v away_o the_o evil_a of_o their_o do_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o say_v he_o come_v now_o let_v we_o reason_n together_o also_o peter_n command_v simon_n magus_n to_o join_v repentance_n with_o prayer_n repent_v say_v he_o and_o pray_v that_o the_o thought_n of_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v forgive_v thou_o and_o for_o the_o more_o clear_a understanding_n of_o this_o whole_a matter_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o prayer_n be_v either_o simple_o mental_a and_o with_o the_o heart_n only_o or_o both_o mental_a and_o vocal_a to_o wit_n both_o with_o man_n and_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n if_o they_o but_o receive_v that_o help_n of_o his_o spirit_n which_o he_o give_v or_o offer_v unto_o man_n always_o to_o perform_v it_o but_o as_o for_o vocal_a prayer_n he_o neither_o do_v require_v it_o at_o all_o time_n nor_o do_v he_o give_v the_o help_n at_o all_o time_n nor_o the_o utterance_n whereby_o to_o perform_v it_o and_o it_o be_v observable_a that_o under_o the_o gospel_n no_o particular_a set_v or_o limit_a time_n be_v appoint_v for_o vocal_a prayer_n but_o every_o one_o be_v to_o wait_v to_o know_v the_o time_n of_o the_o spirit_n call_v and_o move_v thereunto_o which_o will_v be_v seasonable_o and_o frequent_o afford_v to_o such_o as_o wait_v single_o therefore_o especial_o when_o the_o people_n of_o god_n assemble_v together_o for_o than_o it_o be_v that_o vocal_a prayer_n be_v of_o great_a use_n and_o service_n though_o it_o have_v also_o its_o use_n and_o service_n in_o private_a or_o when_o one_o be_v apart_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v somewhat_o of_o sin_n cleave_v to_o the_o best_a action_n of_o the_o saint_n here_o away_o be_v deny_v see_v it_o be_v assert_v by_o he_o without_o proof_n for_o the_o scripture_n cite_v by_o he_o viz._n prov._n 20._o 9_o gal._n 5._o 17._o say_v no_o such_o thing_n and_o by_o consequence_n he_o have_v not_o evince_v it_o and_o for_o a_o proof_n to_o the_o contrary_a see_v job_n 16._o 17._o malach._n 1._o 11._o but_o second_o nor_o do_v it_o follow_v that_o man_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o come_v to_o a_o perfect_a state_n but_o labour_v sincere_o under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o they_o may_v not_o pray_v unto_o god_n because_o their_o prayer_n as_o they_o put_v it_o up_o unto_o god_n by_o the_o help_n of_o his_o spirit_n but_o only_o in_o the_o manner_n for_o the_o substance_n or_o matter_n of_o a_o wicked_a man_n plough_v eat_v travel_a be_v not_o sin_n but_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o viz._n that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o faith_n but_o a_o wicked_a man_n prayer_n as_o he_o be_v a_o wicked_a man_n be_v no_o true_a prayer_n at_o all_o it_o have_v nothing_o of_o the_o true_a substance_n of_o true_a and_o real_a prayer_n it_o be_v a_o mere_a picture_n or_o dead_a resemblance_n of_o prayer_n and_o be_v rather_o a_o mock_a god_n than_o pray_v unto_o he_o for_o it_o want_v the_o life_n of_o true_a prayer_n which_o alone_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v give_v and_o thus_o a_o plain_a difference_n be_v demonstrate_v betwixt_o the_o two_o case_n and_o the_o unvalidity_n of_o i._o a._n his_o consequence_n in_o this_o whole_a matter_n be_v evince_v and_o if_o the_o reader_n desire_v further_a satisfaction_n in_o this_o particular_a let_v he_o read_v our_o answer_n to_o the_o student_n and_o r._n b._n they_o be_v not_o sancty_v but_o how_o unjust_o he_o charge_v this_o upon_o we_o i_o can_v free_o leave_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o all_o sober_a and_o true_a christian_n for_o how_o do_v he_o prove_v that_o we_o eat_v or_o drink_v or_o receive_v any_o creature_n of_o god_n without_o prayer_n and_o thanksgiving_n because_o we_o do_v not_o always_o use_v vocal_a and_o external_n prayer_n when_o we_o eat_v and_o drink_v although_o at_o other_o time_n we_o use_v it_o as_o god_n be_v please_v to_o give_v utterance_n and_o be_v most_o glad_a either_o to_o do_v it_o or_o join_v with_o these_o who_o do_v it_o by_o the_o help_n of_o god_n spirit_n but_o be_v i._o a._n so_o ignorant_a and_o unreasonable_a to_o think_v that_o they_o be_v no_o prayer_n
doctrine_n and_o word_n of_o god_n but_o he_o who_o speak_v it_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o none_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o he_o who_o hear_v it_o and_o into_o the_o heart_n and_o inward_a ear_n of_o his_o inward_a man_n receive_v it_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o these_o only_a i_o say_v the_o doctrine_n be_v know_v and_o by_o these_o it_o be_v only_o receive_v as_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v that_o paul_n commend_v such_o as_o receive_v the_o truth_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n by_o which_o it_o be_v do_v so_o receive_v it_o according_a to_o paul_n testimony_n as_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o word_n of_o god_n moreover_o i_o will_v have_v the_o reader_n to_o know_v that_o when_o we_o say_v by_o the_o word_n be_v understand_v christ_n we_o mean_v not_o christ_n abstract_o or_o separate_o consider_v from_o the_o divine_a doctrine_n and_o testimony_n of_o life_n whether_o in_o the_o heart_n or_o spirit_n itself_o and_o this_o be_v further_a confirm_v out_o of_o the_o greek_a article_n english_v by_o which_o that_o be_v in_o the_o neuter_n gender_n and_o therefore_o render_v this_o sense_n the_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o spirit_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o that_o the_o article_n which_o be_v in_o the_o neuter_n gender_n be_v relative_n to_o spirit_n which_o in_o the_o greek_a language_n be_v in_o the_o same_o gender_n again_o as_o to_o those_o three_o place_n in_o the_o revelation_n which_o mention_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v be_v the_o sword_n of_o his_o mouth_n and_o proceed_v out_o of_o the_o mouth_n of_o christ_n do_v i._n a._n think_v that_o this_o only_o be_v the_o letter_n of_o the_o scripture_n do_v nothing_o but_o the_o letter_n come_v out_o of_o his_o mouth_n do_v not_o spirit_n and_o life_n and_o live_a virtue_n come_v out_o of_o his_o mouth_n and_o do_v not_o christ_n say_v the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v unto_o you_o they_o be_v do_v acknowledge_v so_o much_o as_o the_o least_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o any_o sort_n of_o operation_n or_o illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o â—uch_o as_o that_o they_o call_v effective_a or_o subjective_a order_n to_o draw_v their_o consequence_n from_o the_o scripture_n but_o if_o this_o way_n of_o draw_v consequence_n without_o the_o help_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v so_o safe_a and_o sure_a how_o be_v it_o then_o that_o so_o many_o of_o all_o sort_n draw_v contrary_a consequence_n from_o the_o same_o scripture_n be_v not_o the_o great_a reason_n of_o all_o this_o because_o man_n be_v depart_v from_o that_o holy_a spirit_n which_o give_v forth_o the_o scripture_n and_o can_v only_o give_v the_o true_a understanding_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v it_o not_o plain_a and_o manifest_a as_o the_o light_n at_o noonday_n that_o man_n natural_a spirit_n and_o reason_n and_o wisdom_n in_o its_o high_a perfection_n be_v altogether_o unable_a to_o meddle_v of_o artificial_a logic_n and_o grammar_n and_o natural_a philosophy_n but_o that_o bless_a man_n david_n be_v of_o another_o mind_n when_o he_o pray_v unto_o the_o lord_n say_v open_v my_o eye_n that_o i_o may_v see_v the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o thy_o law_n and_o as_o for_o consequence_n which_o man_n draw_v as_o they_o be_v direct_v and_o teach_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o certain_o whatever_o god_n command_v his_o grace_n incline_v man_n to_o yea_o it_o be_v his_o grace_n in_o their_o heart_n that_o be_v a_o law_n and_o command_v unto_o they_o in_o the_o close_a of_o this_o section_n i._n a._n fall_v on_o to_o dispute_v against_o the_o posibility_n of_o the_o fall_v away_o of_o any_o from_o real_a beginning_n of_o sanctification_n the_o which_o because_o he_o do_v etc._n etc._n next_o he_o allege_v i_o abuâ—e_v some_o worthy_a man_n because_o i_o have_v cite_v some_o as_o hold_v a_o divine_a condescendence_n or_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o as_o if_o the_o same_o do_v consist_v in_o god_n his_o remit_v or_o nullify_n his_o law_n in_o its_o obligation_n but_o this_o be_v a_o gross_a perversion_n for_o i_o do_v not_o mean_v any_o such_o thing_n thereby_o as_o i._o a._n do_v allege_v but_o only_o that_o god_n out_o of_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o wisdom_n have_v give_v unto_o man_n under_o the_o gospel_n dispensation_n a_o law_n that_o be_v so_o gentle_a and_o so_o full_a of_o clemency_n as_o that_o by_o the_o same_o he_o require_v no_o more_o of_o any_o of_o we_o but_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n and_o strength_n he_o do_v afford_v unto_o we_o and_o still_o as_o our_o strength_n and_o ability_n be_v increase_v the_o obligation_n of_o the_o law_n become_v the_o great_a upon_o we_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o he_o which_o shall_v suffice_v to_o every_o one_o of_o they_o if_o due_o apply_v in_o particular_a 1._o one_o great_a defect_n of_o his_o argument_n be_v that_o the_o most_o they_o prove_v be_v that_o man_n of_o himself_o without_o the_o grace_n and_o help_v of_o god_n spirit_n can_v attain_v to_o perfection_n which_o we_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o this_o hinder_v not_o that_o by_o grace_n he_o may_v 2._o a_o second_o defect_n be_v that_o his_o argument_n prove_v that_o the_o saint_n have_v their_o imperfection_n and_o sin_n before_o they_o be_v full_o wash_v and_o cleanse_v from_o they_o which_o a_o sinless_a perfection_n for_o although_o adam_n be_v create_v in_o a_o sinless_a perfection_n yet_o certain_o he_o be_v to_o have_v go_v on_o to_o a_o high_a state_n of_o perfection_n and_o we_o read_v of_o christ_n who_o have_v no_o sin_n at_o all_o that_o he_o be_v make_v perfect_a through_o suffering_n again_o when_o christ_n say_v i_o work_v to_o day_n and_o to_o morrow_n and_o the_o three_o day_n i_o be_o perfect_v this_o can_v signify_v that_o he_o have_v any_o sinful_a imperfection_n before_o that_o time_n but_o his_o be_v perfect_v the_o three_o day_n signify_v that_o his_o argument_n or_o reason_n for_o perfection_n i_o find_v not_o myself_o concern_v to_o vindicate_v those_o argument_n as_o manage_v by_o he_o because_o he_o do_v not_o propose_v they_o either_o in_o matter_n or_o form_n as_o they_o do_v

deep_a prejudice_n and_o perverseness_n of_o spirit_n in_o i._o a._n in_o opposition_n to_o which_o i_o say_v that_o unless_o god_n do_v not_o only_o not_o exact_a in_o his_o justice_n the_o rigid_a rigour_n of_o the_o law_n as_o he_o term_v it_o but_o do_v not_o also_o pardon_v and_o forgive_v we_o free_o for_o christ_n sake_n multitude_n of_o sin_n so_o as_o not_o only_o to_o remit_v we_o a_o as_o have_v a_o equal_a proportion_n to_o the_o reward_n of_o eternal_a salvation_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n that_o may_v be_v as_o well_o say_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o love_n repentance_n and_o all_o the_o act_n of_o man_n and_o spiritual_a obedience_n but_o not_o as_o work_v do_v by_o we_o and_o have_v that_o quality_n of_o proportion_n to_o eternal_a life_n i_o shall_v not_o insist_v to_o answer_v particular_o i._o a._n his_o pretend_a argument_n against_o justification_n by_o repentance_n and_o conversion_n and_o inward_a act_n of_o righteousness_n as_o proceed_v from_o the_o spirit_n our_o soul_n nor_o our_o virtue_n merit_n heaven_n nor_o redemption_n as_o merit_n signify_v equality_n but_o see_v god_n have_v count_v our_o soul_n so_o dear_a as_o to_o give_v so_o great_a a_o
