the_o happiness_n and_o welfare_n of_o mankind_n we_o can_v be_v in_o a_o happy_a or_o tolerable_o good_a state_n but_o by_o conform_v ourselves_o to_o the_o precept_n of_o this_o law_n we_o have_v already_o show_v that_o those_o must_v necessary_o be_v deplorable_o miserable_a who_o live_v in_o subjection_n to_o any_o corrupt_a appetite_n any_o fleshly_a or_o spiritual_a lust._n to_o

generality_n of_o her_o child_n be_v ignorant_a of_o as_o if_o she_o design_v in_o so_o do_v to_o put_v a_o affront_n upon_o s._n paul_n who_o have_v teach_v we_o in_o the_o most_o express_a term_n the_o quite_o contrary_a doctrine_n in_o the_o 14_o chapter_n of_o the_o first_o to_o the_o corinthian_n to_o conclude_v this_o chapter_n our_o notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n be_v so_o very_o far_o from_o befriend_v popery_n that_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a it_o shall_v have_v a_o great_a enemy_n in_o that_o it_o so_o high_o conduce_v to_o the_o advance_n of_o the_o true_a spirit_n and_o power_n of_o religion_n and_o to_o the_o perfect_a rid_v our_o mind_n of_o those_o two_o as_o great_a friend_n to_o popery_n as_o pest_n to_o religion_n and_o even_o humane_a society_n viz._n superstition_n and_o fanaticism_n i_o mean_v by_o these_o two_o a_o base_a unworthy_a apprehension_n of_o the_o deity_n and_o a_o blind_a irrational_a heady_a zeal_n if_o it_o be_v say_v after_o all_o that_o suppose_v the_o two_o notion_n of_o christian_a liberty_n which_o we_o have_v now_o declare_v our_o sense_n 〈◊〉_d be_v never_o so_o false_a yet_o we_o be_v notwithstanding_o too_o confine_v in_o our_o notion_n in_o â—hat_n christian_n liberty_n do_v not_o only_o consi_v in_o freedom_n from_o the_o dominion_n of_o 〈◊〉_d and_o the_o other_o sad_a consequent_n of_o it_o â—ut_v also_o in_o countenance_n they_o will_v thereby_o give_v to_o authority_n in_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o sacrilegious_a usurpation_n of_o power_n over_o minister_n it_o can_v be_v justifiable_a in_o they_o to_o attend_v willing_o upon_o such_o form_n but_o in_o order_n to_o the_o undeceive_n of_o those_o who_o be_v so_o tenacious_a of_o this_o conceit_n that_o a_o prescribe_a liturgy_n be_v a_o hindrance_n themselves_o and_o to_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o refuse_v to_o do_v their_o part_n and_o to_o cooperate_v with_o he_o because_o they_o will_v not_o attend_v to_o the_o evidence_n the_o spirit_n have_v give_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o have_v too_o weak_a and_o ineffectual_a a_o belief_n thereof_o because_o they_o will_v not_o consider_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o will_v not_o weigh_v well_o and_o lay_v to_o heart_n its_o precept_n with_o the_o infinite_o powerful_a motive_n wherewith_o they_o be_v enforce_v because_o they_o will_v not_o listen_v to_o the_o spirit_n good_a motion_n and_o suggestion_n whereby_o he_o work_v in_o man_n to_o will_n and_o beget_v in_o they_o good_a resolution_n but_o do_v true_o â—â—ench_v the_o spirit_n enemy_n of_o their_o soul_n as_o to_o expect_v that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v do_v all_o in_o they_o without_o their_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o he_o shall_v make_v they_o temperate_a righteous_a charitable_a meek_n humble_a and_o submissive_a to_o god_n will_n heavenly-minded_n and_o the_o like_a without_o their_o due_a attendance_n upon_o those_o ordinance_n of_o the_o word_n sacrament_n and_o prayer_n and_o serious_a consideration_n and_o watchfulness_n over_o themselves_o wherein_o alone_o we_o have_v ground_n to_o expect_v the_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o divine_a grace_n in_o our_o soul_n but_o i_o say_v though_o these_o gift_n be_v observable_a in_o so_o very_a few_o comparative_o the_o account_n whereof_o i_o have_v brief_o touch_v upon_o and_o show_v that_o it_o be_v man_n own_a fault_n that_o they_o be_v not_o very_o common_a yet_o we_o have_v no_o warrant_n from_o scripture_n that_o i_o know_v of_o to_o call_v those_o which_o be_v much_o more_o common_a though_o they_o be_v by_o many_o so_o repute_v gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n notwithstanding_o the_o prophecy_n and_o promise_n of_o so_o
plentiful_a a_o pour_v of_o he_o out_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o be_v indeed_o common_a as_o well_o as_o more_o special_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o first_o age_n for_o the_o miraculous_a one_o of_o speak_v all_o manner_n of_o tongue_n prophesy_v heal_v all_o sort_n of_o disease_n cast_v out_o devil_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v the_o great_a witness_n to_o the_o that_o believe_v in_o my_o name_n etc._n etc._n mark_v 16._o 17._o and_o not_o only_o on_o those_o believer_n who_o be_v sincere_a christian_n but_o those_o also_o who_o life_n be_v not_o at_o all_o answerable_a to_o their_o christian_a profession_n as_o appear_v by_o those_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n mat._n 7._o 22._o and_o several_a of_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n we_o have_v full_a assurance_n from_o antiquity_n 34._o do_v continue_v in_o the_o church_n though_o in_o nothing_o so_o plentiful_a a_o measure_n particular_o those_o of_o healing_n prophesy_v and_o cast_v out_o devil_n till_o about_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o four_o century_n when_o providence_n bless_v she_o with_o a_o christian_a emperor_n and_o she_o come_v to_o be_v protect_v by_o his_o sword_n and_o law_n and_o consequent_o stand_v not_o in_o such_o need_n of_o those_o gift_n for_o the_o keep_v she_o in_o heart_n and_o the_o uphold_v her_o credit_n and_o reputation_n in_o the_o world_n but_o as_o these_o have_v cease_v for_o many_o age_n so_o the_o abovesaid_a fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v the_o only_a endowment_n now_o remain_v which_o may_v in_o a_o more_o peculiar_a manner_n be_v prayer_n and_o too_o many_o of_o those_o that_o do_v pretend_v to_o it_o do_v manifest_o declare_v by_o the_o management_n of_o their_o gift_n that_o either_o they_o juggle_v and_o be_v gross_a cheat_n or_o be_v sad_o delude_v what_o slovenly_a what_o ridiculous_a what_o bold_a and_o impudent_a expression_n be_v ordinary_o hear_v from_o they_o and_o what_o a_o deal_n of_o nauseat_a stuff_n better_a than_o a_o blaspheme_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o father_n it_o upon_o he_o but_o i_o delight_v not_o to_o insist_v upon_o this_o argument_n it_o be_v object_v that_o s._n paul_n say_v rom._n 8._o 26._o we_o know_v not_o what_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o as_o we_o ought_v but_o the_o spirit_n itself_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o with_o groan_n which_o can_v be_v utter_v i_o answer_v that_o this_o text_n make_v not_o at_o all_o for_o the_o purpose_n of_o those_o who_o in_o this_o sense_n pretend_v to_o a_o ability_n of_o pray_v by_o the_o spirit_n for_o as_o for_o the_o apostle_n of_o such_o good_a thing_n and_o therefore_o in_o reference_n to_o these_o thing_n we_o be_v not_o to_o pray_v absolute_o but_o conditional_o and_o with_o a_o willingness_n to_o be_v deny_v if_o god_n see_v it_o not_o good_a to_o grant_v they_o to_o we_o and_o the_o follow_a word_n show_v that_o it_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o be_v conclude_v that_o the_o spirit_n will_v put_v it_o into_o good_a people_n heart_n what_o temporal_a thing_n they_o shall_v pray_v for_o for_o they_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o will_v back_o their_o petition_n in_o heaven_n by_o intercede_v for_o they_o with_o unutterable_a groan_n not_o that_o he_o will_v put_v word_n into_o their_o mouth_n or_o suggest_v matter_n of_o prayer_n to_o they_o i_o dare_v not_o say_v the_o spirit_n never_o do_v thus_o i_o shall_v be_v then_o too_o bold_a but_o we_o have_v no_o ground_n to_o expect_v or_o hope_v he_o shall_v at_o least_o in_o ordinary_a case_n in_o short_a whosoever_o pretend_v that_o his_o prayer_n be_v dictate_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n must_v have_v the_o very_a same_o opinion_n of_o they_o that_o he_o have_v of_o the_o divine_o inspire_a write_n second_o i_o say_v consequent_o that_o a_o ability_n of_o utter_v our_o mind_n to_o almighty_a god_n in_o great_a variety_n of_o word_n and_o phrase_n be_v as_o much_o a_o natural_a gift_n or_o a_o gift_n acquire_v in_o a_o ordinary_a way_n that_o be_v by_o study_n and_o frequent_v practise_v and_o exercise_v as_o any_o art_n or_o ability_n whatsoever_o very_o bad_a man_n have_v be_v often_o know_v to_o have_v a_o notable_a faculty_n this_o way_n and_o so_o miserable_o weak_a and_o silly_a be_v abundance_n of_o people_n as_o to_o admire_v those_o for_o excellent_a christian_n in_o who_o they_o perceive_v it_o though_o they_o know_v they_o guilty_a of_o very_o great_a immorality_n and_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o commend_v they_o but_o this_o faculty_n but_o there_o be_v no_o man_n if_o he_o will_v set_v himself_o to_o it_o and_o he_o be_v make_v for_o it_o that_o be_v prepare_v with_o a_o sufficient_a measure_n of_o boldness_n and_o confidence_n with_o a_o glib_a tongue_n and_o a_o warm_a head_n but_o may_v be_v
