groundless_a scruple_n of_o conscience_n act._n 10.13.14_o or_o by_o miserable_a sparingness_n etc._n etc._n so_o it_o be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o but_o as_o the_o small_a part_n of_o our_o drink_v in_o the_o sense_n former_o mention_v so_o he_o do_v not_o commend_v it_o alone_o but_o as_o it_o usher_v in_o and_o promove_v some_o true_a good_a to_o be_v enjoy_v by_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o that_o a_o man_n eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_n 4._o minister_n when_o they_o confute_v the_o abuse_n of_o thing_n lawful_a and_o the_o excess_n of_o man_n affection_n to_o they_o shall_v withal_o assert_v and_o clear_v the_o lawful_a liberty_n of_o christian_n lest_o hearer_n who_o be_v ready_a to_o run_v from_o one_o sinful_a extreme_a to_o another_o from_o make_v provision_n for_o the_o flesh_n in_o the_o excess_n or_o pamper_n of_o it_o to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n thereof_o unto_o a_o neglect_v of_o the_o body_n that_o happiness_n which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o life_n by_o the_o child_n of_o the_o lord_n want_v not_o its_o own_o imperfection_n and_o mixture_n of_o trouble_n and_o toil_n with_o it_o the_o lord_n so_o dispose_v that_o man_n may_v long_o for_o that_o state_n where_o their_o happiness_n may_v be_v full_a and_o unmixed_a in_o heaven_n there_o shall_v be_v no_o use_n of_o the_o creature_n for_o eat_v drink_v and_o the_o like_a rev._n 7.16_o which_o take_v a_o great_a part_n of_o a_o man_n time_n to_o provide_v and_o use_v so_o frequent_o but_o in_o this_o life_n there_o be_v no_o better_a of_o it_o than_o to_o be_v at_o the_o pain_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o that_o way_n to_o keep_v up_o ourselves_o that_o our_o soul_n may_v enjoy_v good_a of_o our_o labour_n 6._o the_o right_a use_n of_o creature_n comfort_n such_o as_o meat_n drink_v and_o the_o like_a be_v not_o only_o consistent_a with_o but_z subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v of_o that_o true_a spiritual_a good_a which_o be_v suitable_a to_o it_o when_o we_o be_v by_o the_o use_n of_o these_o thing_n lead_v to_o think_v upon_o and_o long_o for_o better_a and_o when_o the_o strength_n we_o receive_v thereby_o be_v employ_v in_o the_o praise_n and_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n for_o this_o eat_v and_o drink_v here_o commend_v carry_v along_o with_o it_o and_o promove_n the_o soul_n enjoy_v of_o good_a and_o if_o man_n eat_v and_o drink_v and_o neglect_v to_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a he_o be_v worse_a than_o the_o beast_n that_o perish_v there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v the_o soul_n enjoy_v good_n 7._o though_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v first_o and_o principal_o care_v for_o mat._n 6_o 33._o yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o lord_n mind_n that_o our_o seek_v the_o good_a of_o our_o soul_n shall_v make_v we_o careless_a of_o our_o body_n but_o rather_o that_o we_o shall_v out_o of_o respect_n common_a to_o they_o with_o beast_n such_o as_o the_o bearing_z down_o of_o other_o inferior_a to_o they_o the_o satisfy_n of_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o the_o like_a for_o these_o resemblance_n be_v here_o reckon_v out_o by_o solomon_n as_o so_o many_o argument_n to_o convince_v man_n of_o his_o brutishness_n in_o think_v himself_o happy_a for_o his_o power_n and_o place_n in_o the_o world_n without_o fellowship_n with_o god_n and_o live_v in_o his_o fear_n and_o obedience_n for_o that_o which_o befall_v the_o son_n of_o man_n befall_v the_o beast_n etc._n etc._n 9_o they_o that_o will_v deal_v effectual_o for_o convince_a sinner_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o their_o way_n will_v make_v use_n of_o such_o motive_n as_o probable_o may_v most_o prevail_v with_o they_o though_o these_o be_v not_o such_o as_o be_v of_o themselves_o the_o most_o cogent_a for_o solomon_n here_o be_v to_o convince_v man_n in_o power_n abuse_v the_o same_o of_o their_o brutish_a and_o beastly_a corrupt_a heart_n will_v father_n many_o absurd_a and_o impious_a thing_n upon_o the_o scripture_n contradictory_n to_o itself_o for_o this_o that_o man_n have_v no_o preeminency_n above_o a_o beast_n take_v without_o respect_n to_o the_o scope_n and_o matter_n in_o hand_n savour_v of_o atheism_n and_o agree_v not_o with_o the_o follow_a truth_n that_o man_n have_v the_o preeminency_n of_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n above_o the_o beast_n but_o take_v with_o reference_n to_o the_o resemblance_n here_o mention_v that_o man_n be_v neither_o exeme_v from_o several_a outward_a event_n nor_o from_o death_n itself_o it_o have_v a_o clear_a truth_n in_o it_o man_n have_v no_o preeminence_n in_o these_o and_o such_o as_o these_o above_o the_o beast_n 11._o when_o the_o emptiness_n of_o all_o create_a thing_n and_o humane_a endeavour_n about_o they_o in_o regard_n of_o any_o true_a contentment_n they_o can_v afford_v to_o a_o man_n spirit_n and_o their_o insufficiency_n to_o make_v he_o true_o happy_a be_v see_v and_o well_o ponder_v man_n will_v easy_o assent_v to_o this_o truth_n that_o they_o be_v real_o brutish_a who_o seek_v their_o happiness_n in_o those_o thing_n and_o choose_v they_o for_o their_o best_a portion_n which_o have_v no_o proportion_n to_o their_o immortal_a soul_n for_o as_o a_o clear_a proof_n that_o they_o be_v beast_n who_o so_o seek_v their_o happiness_n thiâ—_n general_a assertion_n be_v bring_v in_o for_o all_o be_v vanity_n 12._o man_n as_o well_o as_o other_o live_a creature_n inferior_a to_o they_o be_v in_o a_o continual_a motion_n shall_v study_v the_o right_a use_n of_o these_o thing_n for_o after_o solomon_n have_v teach_v the_o right_a manner_n of_o worship_n in_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o chapter_n he_o come_v here_o in_o the_o last_o to_o set_v people_n upon_o the_o right_a way_n of_o use_v their_o common_a mercy_n behold_v etc._n etc._n it_o be_v good_a for_o one_o to_o eat_v and_o to_o drink_v etc._n etc._n 2._o christ_n minister_n shall_v be_v no_o less_o careful_a to_o point_v out_o the_o lawful_a liberty_n of_o the_o lord_n people_n and_o show_v they_o how_o large_a his_o allowance_n to_o they_o be_v even_o in_o the_o use_n of_o outward_a comfort_n than_o to_o show_v they_o the_o hazard_n of_o inordinat_a love_n to_o and_o excess_n in_o the_o use_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o consequent_o the_o lord_n people_n shall_v be_v as_o careful_a to_o know_v and_o take_v their_o allowance_n in_o the_o holy_a and_o cheerful_a use_n of_o creature_n comfort_n as_o they_o shall_v be_v attentive_a lest_o they_o exceed_v in_o their_o love_n of_o and_o delight_n in_o they_o consider_v that_o satan_n study_v to_o drive_v they_o from_o one_o extreme_a to_o another_o and_o as_o he_o take_v occasion_n from_o their_o lawful_a liberty_n to_o drive_v they_o to_o excess_n so_o from_o the_o doctrine_n of_o mortification_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v strain_v too_o high_a or_o not_o qualify_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christian_a liberty_n in_o the_o use_n of_o lawful_a comfort_n either_o to_o make_v they_o look_v upon_o religion_n as_o a_o severe_a and_o rigid_a task_n prejudicial_a to_o their_o natural_a life_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o it_o or_o to_o make_v they_o without_o ground_n scrupulous_a and_o with_o fear_n and_o doubt_v to_o use_v these_o thing_n which_o if_o they_o know_v the_o lord_n allowance_n and_o the_o right_a way_n of_o use_v they_o they_o may_v use_v with_o a_o quiet_a and_o good_a conscience_n therefore_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n after_o he_o have_v direct_v solomon_n by_o many_o argument_n to_o dissuade_v from_o the_o inordinat_fw-la love_n of_o riches_n in_o the_o second_o part_n of_o this_o chapter_n he_o bring_v he_o in_o the_o close_a to_o commend_v the_o holy_a and_o comfortable_a use_n of_o the_o creature_n behold_v that_o which_o i_o have_v see_v it_o be_v good_a and_o comely_a for_o one_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o enjoy_v good_a etc._n etc._n 3._o though_o the_o pretence_n of_o the_o best_a man_n experience_n of_o the_o good_a of_o any_o course_n be_v a_o very_a slender_a commendation_n of_o it_o if_o there_o be_v no_o far_o see_v man_n be_v so_o easy_o deceive_v yet_o minister_n shall_v put_v truth_n they_o hold_v forth_o to_o the_o trial_n of_o their_o own_o experience_n and_o shall_v be_v very_o careful_a observer_n what_o true_a advantage_n may_v be_v find_v in_o any_o course_n or_o practice_n they_o commend_v that_o they_o themselves_o may_v taste_v of_o it_o and_o see_v it_o and_o so_o may_v with_o great_a zeal_n and_o confidence_n call_v other_o to_o try_v the_o same_o and_o their_o commendation_n of_o it_o come_v through_o a_o heart_n season_v with_o the_o sweetness_n thereof_o it_o may_v be_v the_o sweet_a to_o they_o that_o have_v their_o sense_n exercise_v for_o so_o do_v solomon_n here_o commend_v this_o way_n from_o his_o own_o experience_n behold_v that_o which_o i_o have_v see_v it_o be_v good_a and_o comely_a etc._n etc._n 4._o though_o nothing_o low_a than_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o everblessed_n god_n be_v a_o man_n chief_a good_a yet_o there_o be_v a_o subordinat_a inferior_a good_a in_o the_o right_a use_n of_o the_o most_o common_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n such_o as_o meat_n drink_v and_o the_o like_a in_o so_o far_o as_o the_o same_o be_v use_v to_o keep_v the_o body_n in_o health_n and_o strength_n and_o to_o cheer_v the_o natural_a spirit_n in_o do_v the_o lord_n service_n for_o solomon_n say_v he_o see_v this_o that_o it_o be_v good_a for_o a_o man_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v etc._n etc._n to_o wit_n in_o this_o sense_n and_o for_o this_o end_n 5._o as_o the_o hearty_a cheerful_a and_o holy_a use_n of_o allow_a creature_n comfort_n be_v a_o thing_n that_o beautify_v religion_n and_o make_v christian_n lovely_a to_o onlooker_n so_o be_v they_o bind_v to_o study_v the_o same_o for_o that_o very_a end_n and_o not_o to_o look_v only_o to_o what_o be_v good_a for_o themselves_o but_o also_o to_o what_o be_v comely_a to_o other_o or_o may_v allure_v and_o gain_v they_o to_o fall_v in_o love_n with_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n for_o solomon_n here_o commend_v the_o holy_a and_o cheerful_a use_n of_o allow_a comfort_n from_o this_o that_o as_o it_o be_v good_a to_o the_o person_n so_o use_v they_o so_o it_o be_v comely_a to_o other_o behold_v say_v he_o that_o which_o i_o have_v see_v that_o it_o be_v good_a to_o wit_n for_o a_o man_n self_n main_o and_o comely_a or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v beautiful_a namely_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o other_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v and_o enjoy_v the_o good_a of_o his_o labour_n 6._o though_o some_o be_v exeme_v from_o handle-labour_n or_o servile_a employment_n 1_o cor._n 9.6_o yet_o there_o be_v no_o man_n exeme_v from_o labour_n of_o one_o sort_n or_o other_o nor_o can_v any_o cheerful_o and_o with_o a_o good_a conscience_n take_v the_o comfort_n of_o god_n creature_n who_o be_v in_o a_o capacity_n to_o labour_n and_o have_v the_o opportunity_n thereof_o neglect_v the_o same_o and_o so_o love_v to_o live_v upon_o the_o good_a of_o other_o man_n labour_n and_o not_o his_o own_o for_o say_v solomon_n it_o be_v good_a and_o comely_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v but_o in_o so_o do_v he_o shall_v see_v that_o he_o enjoy_v the_o good_a of_o his_o own_o labour_n which_o he_o take_v under_o the_o sun_n etc._n etc._n 7._o as_o there_o be_v no_o day_n of_o a_o man_n life_n wherein_o he_o be_v able_a to_o labour_v except_v the_o day_n which_o be_v the_o lord_n to_o wit_v the_o sabbath_n and_o other_o day_n set_v a_o part_n for_o his_o worship_n wherein_o he_o be_v exeme_v from_o some_o lawful_a and_o honest_a labour_n so_o man_n painful_a labour_n as_o the_o word_n signify_v be_v only_o during_o this_o life_n under_o the_o sun_n his_o rest_n from_o his_o labour_n be_v above_o the_o sun_n whether_o his_o work_n shall_v follow_v he_o for_o say_v solomon_n it_o be_v good_a for_o a_o man_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o enjoy_v the_o good_a of_o his_o labour_n which_o he_o take_v under_o the_o sun_n all_o the_o day_n of_o his_o life_n 8._o as_o every_o day_n of_o a_o man_n life_n shall_v be_v take_v for_o a_o new_a gift_n of_o god_n and_o so_o shall_v be_v spend_v in_o honour_v and_o serve_v he_o so_o all_o the_o good_a which_o he_o enjoy_v of_o his_o labour_n shall_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o gift_n of_o god_n also_o though_o the_o same_o be_v acquire_v by_o never_o so_o much_o labour_n of_o he_o see_v the_o strength_n to_o labour_n and_o the_o success_n of_o labour_n be_v from_o the_o lord_n for_o this_o clause_n which_o god_n give_v he_o may_v be_v safe_o refer_v either_o to_o the_o good_a of_o his_o labour_n which_o he_o take_v or_o to_o the_o day_n of_o his_o life_n under_o the_o sun_n wherein_o he_o labour_n and_o enjoy_v that_o good_a both_o which_o god_n give_v he_o 9_o as_o they_o that_o have_v abundance_n of_o the_o world_n have_v but_o a_o part_n thereof_o allow_v upon_o they_o for_o their_o own_o use_n there_o be_v several_a part_n thereof_o appropriate_a by_o
be_v often_o disappoint_v in_o so_o neither_o can_v he_o thereby_o satisfy_v his_o greedy_a long_n ver_fw-la 7._o iv_o that_o though_o with_o his_o wisdom_n he_o may_v gain_v to_o himself_o great_a riches_n honour_n and_o pleasure_n yet_o be_v destitute_a of_o that_o wisdom_n which_o be_v from_o above_o he_o be_v as_o far_o distant_a from_o true_a happiness_n as_o he_o that_o be_v reckon_v a_o fool._n ver_fw-la 8._o upon_o occasion_n of_o which_o he_o caution_n the_o poor_a man_n who_o want_v save_a wisdom_n and_o the_o true_a riches_n yet_o have_v some_o measure_n of_o moral_a prudence_n to_o direct_v their_o way_n before_o man_n that_o they_o be_v not_o proud_a of_o their_o poverty_n or_o count_v themselves_o the_o more_o happy_a when_o they_o thus_o hear_v of_o the_o misery_n and_o folly_n of_o the_o rich_a covetous_a man._n ver_fw-la 8._o and_o second_o in_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o chapter_n he_o give_v several_a reason_n why_o people_n shall_v not_o hunt_v so_o hot_o after_o these_o earthly_a thing_n to_o the_o neglect_n of_o the_o pursuit_n after_o true_a happiness_n i._o because_o the_o quiet_a and_o content_a though_o short_a enjoyment_n of_o the_o portion_n which_o god_n give_v man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v far_o more_o advantageous_a both_o for_o their_o spiritual_a and_o temporal_a condition_n than_o the_o inordinat_fw-la range_v of_o the_o heart_n from_o creature_n to_o creature_n seek_v satisfaction_n and_o that_o contentment_n which_o they_o can_v give_v ver_fw-la 9_o ii_o because_o as_o this_o too_o eager_a and_o endless_a pursuit_n after_o the_o creature_n be_v a_o course_n that_o not_o only_o will_v prove_v the_o creature_n itself_o vain_a and_o empty_a of_o all_o true_a contentment_n but_o man_n himself_o to_o be_v vain_a and_o foolish_a in_o seek_v satisfaction_n where_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v bad_a so_o will_v it_o be_v find_v to_o be_v a_o vexation_n and_o torment_n to_o the_o spirit_n ver_fw-la 9_o iii_o because_o constant_a experience_n do_v show_v that_o any_o success_n such_o eager_a and_o endless_a pursuit_n after_o the_o world_n for_o happiness_n have_v be_v already_o make_v know_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n here_o and_o else_o where_o in_o the_o word_n to_o be_v but_o vanity_n which_o as_o may_v be_v not_o our_o to_o all_o can_v be_v attribute_v to_o the_o creature_n which_o neither_o be_v able_a nor_o ever_o be_v ordain_v to_o afford_v true_a content_a and_o happiness_n but_o to_o frail_a die_a man_n with_o who_o god_n in_o his_o holy_a purpose_n and_o providence_n have_v keep_v this_o constant_a course_n the_o contrary_a whereof_o can_v be_v instance_a that_o whoever_o seek_v happiness_n in_o the_o creature_n shall_v come_v off_o with_o nothing_o but_o vanity_n and_o vexation_n of_o spirit_n ver_fw-la 10._o iv_o because_o by_o seek_v happiness_n in_o the_o creature_n man_n do_v state_n themselves_o in_o opposition_n and_o contradictory_n term_n to_o the_o almighty_a which_o will_v be_v find_v neither_o to_o be_v their_o wisdom_n nor_o their_o safety_n ver_fw-la 10._o v._o because_o by_o so_o do_v man_n be_v not_o only_o no_o whitt_n near_o but_o considerable_o far_a from_o his_o true_a happiness_n and_o nothing_o better_v by_o all_o these_o foolish_a chase_n ver_fw-la 11._o vi_o because_o as_o a_o man_n life_n be_v both_o short_a and_o uncertain_a and_o so_o be_v to_o be_v better_o employ_v than_o in_o seek_v happiness_n in_o the_o creature_n so_o it_o be_v no_o more_o dubious_a what_o condition_n in_o the_o world_n whether_o of_o prosperity_n or_o adversity_n will_v contribute_v most_o for_o his_o design_a satisfaction_n than_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o none_o of_o the_o son_n of_o adam_n without_o the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n can_v either_o themselves_o clear_o know_v or_o sufficient_o instruct_v other_o wherein_o true_a happiness_n do_v consist_v much_o less_o hold_v forth_o the_o right_a way_n how_o to_o attain_v to_o it_o ver_fw-la 12._o and_o vii_o because_o that_o as_o what_o future_a event_n may_v befall_v he_o before_o his_o death_n be_v hide_v from_o himself_o and_o other_o so_o there_o be_v none_o that_o can_v certain_o inform_v he_o how_o these_o thing_n he_o so_o violent_o hunt_v after_o to_o the_o lose_n of_o his_o soul_n shall_v either_o be_v employ_v or_o by_o who_o they_o shall_v be_v enjoy_v and_o so_o man_n happiness_n can_v be_v in_o these_o thing_n and_o its_o folly_n inordinate_o and_o excessive_o to_o pursue_v after_o they_o ver_fw-la 12._o which_o three_o last_o reason_n be_v propose_v by_o way_n of_o question_n which_o have_v their_o answer_n in_o their_o bosom_n obvious_a to_o nature_n light_n and_o common_a reason_n the_o more_o to_o awaken_v man_n to_o the_o consideration_n of_o they_o suppose_v this_o covetous_a miser_n to_o have_v his_o idol_n in_o his_o possession_n and_o show_v what_o his_o attainment_n may_v be_v 1._o by_o specify_v his_o prime_a idol_n as_o riches_n of_o all_o sort_n great_a honour_n and_o esteem_v in_o the_o world_n and_o 2._o by_o a_o general_a expression_n he_o want_v nothing_o of_o what_o his_o soul_n desire_v not_o as_o if_o the_o boundless_a desire_n of_o the_o covetous_a can_v ever_o be_v satisfy_v but_o that_o he_o want_v nothing_o of_o the_o thing_n themselves_o for_o the_o substance_n of_o they_o wherein_o he_o apprehend_v his_o happiness_n to_o lie_v and_o these_o thing_n god_n be_v say_v to_o give_v he_o not_o in_o love_n and_o approbation_n of_o his_o desire_n but_o in_o the_o course_n of_o his_o common_a providence_n and_o in_o his_o displeasure_n as_o appear_v by_o what_o follow_v three_o he_o show_v wherein_o god_n manifest_v even_o in_o time_n his_o just_a displeasure_n against_o such_o a_o man_n sin_n of_o covetousness_n in_o own_o either_o by_o civil_a right_n or_o as_o the_o fruit_n of_o their_o industry_n when_o servant_n give_v out_o their_o master_n good_n though_o for_o the_o supply_n of_o the_o poor_a they_o be_v not_o give_v obedience_n to_o this_o direction_n cast_v thy_o bread_n not_o another_o upon_o the_o water_n 6._o though_o there_o be_v no_o more_o probability_n of_o advantage_n to_o be_v have_v by_o free_o receive_v from_o he_o for_o the_o good_a of_o other_o in_o obedience_n to_o his_o command_n or_o 3_o if_o we_o apply_v it_o thus_o as_o a_o tree_n what_o way_n so_o ever_o it_o fall_v there_o it_o lie_v and_o so_o it_o be_v to_o be_v find_v even_o so_o be_v it_o with_o man_n as_o to_o his_o soul_n he_o shall_v be_v for_o ever_o in_o that_o estate_n wherein_o he_o fall_v at_o death_n and_o use_v of_o as_o a_o argument_n to_o charity_n whether_o the_o tree_n fall_v towards_o the_o south_n or_o towards_o the_o north_n in_o the_o place_n where_o the_o tree_n fall_v there_o it_o shall_v be_v 3._o though_o there_o be_v discretion_n require_v in_o charity_n to_o know_v the_o worth_n of_o the_o person_n upon_o who_o it_o be_v bestow_v ps_n 112.5_o yet_o where_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o north_n in_o the_o place_n where_o it_o fall_v there_o it_o shall_v be_v 4._o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o that_o the_o eternal_a estate_n of_o our_o soul_n shall_v be_v according_a to_o the_o condition_n they_o be_v find_v in_o at_o death_n and_o that_o judgement_n will_v find_v we_o as_o death_n leau_v we_o shall_v make_v we_o study_v to_o lead_v a_o good_a life_n and_o particular_o so_o thou_o know_v not_o the_o work_n of_o god_n who_o make_v all_o solomon_n have_v press_v the_o duty_n of_o charity_n with_o several_a reason_n do_v here_o discover_v the_o weakness_n and_o insufficiency_n of_o these_o pretence_n or_o objection_n which_o man_n often_o make_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o delay_n or_o neglect_v altogether_o that_o duty_n and_o these_o objection_n be_v take_v from_o the_o probability_n which_o man_n imagine_v of_o such_o sad_a accident_n to_o befall_v they_o as_o make_v they_o fear_v want_n and_o misery_n to_o themselves_o if_o they_o give_v of_o their_o substance_n to_o the_o poor_a as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n press_v the_o weakness_n of_o all_o which_o the_o wise_a man_n clear_v and_o prove_v first_o by_o a_o proverbial_a speech_n borrow_v from_o foolish_a husbandman_n the_o force_n whereof_o amount_n to_o this_o that_o as_o he_o who_o upon_o every_o appearance_n of_o rain_n or_o wind_n when_o he_o will_v not_o have_v they_o do_v forbear_v sow_v or_o reap_v will_v never_o it_o be_v propbable_a either_o sow_n or_o reap_v the_o application_n of_o which_o similitude_n be_v not_o express_v but_o may_v be_v easy_o gather_v from_o the_o scope_n thus_o even_o so_o he_o who_o look_v to_o all_o future_a contingency_n which_o may_v discourage_v or_o hinder_v he_o in_o his_o duty_n will_v ready_o never_o set_v about_o it_o and_o particular_o he_o that_o neglect_v charity_n to_o other_o when_o god_n call_v he_o to_o it_o because_o of_o every_o suggestion_n that_o his_o fortune_n may_v soon_o be_v exhaust_v will_v never_o cast_v his_o bread_n upon_o the_o water_n and_o so_o never_o reap_v the_o reward_n promise_v to_o the_o performer_n of_o that_o duty_n next_o he_o show_v the_o weakness_n of_o that_o sort_n of_o reason_v to_o deter_v man_n from_o their_o duty_n and_o prove_v they_o shall_v not_o neglect_v it_o though_o the_o appearance_n of_o success_n be_v never_o to_o small_a by_o a_o argument_n take_v from_o the_o unsearchable_a depth_n of_o god_n wisdom_n manifest_v in_o his_o ordinary_a operation_n and_o that_o man_n may_v be_v convince_v of_o their_o ignorance_n and_o so_o not_o despair_v of_o the_o performance_n of_o what_o god_n have_v promise_v though_o they_o see_v no_o appearance_n thereof_o he_o instance_n two_o thing_n very_o near_o to_o every_o man_n and_o yet_o clear_o understand_v by_o none_o the_o first_o instance_n be_v that_o man_n know_v not_o the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v they_o be_v ignorant_a how_o their_o own_o soul_n be_v form_v and_o unite_v to_o their_o body_n how_o they_o exist_v and_o act_v while_o they_o be_v in_o the_o body_n and_o when_o they_o be_v separat_fw-la from_o it_o the_o other_o be_v that_o none_o know_v how_o the_o bone_n do_v grow_v in_o the_o womb_n of_o she_o that_o be_v with_o child_n that_o be_v none_o do_v clear_o understand_v that_o wonderful_a work_n the_o form_n of_o his_o own_o body_n in_o the_o womb_n and_o from_o man_n ignorance_n of_o these_o thing_n he_o do_v infer_v that_o they_o can_v distinct_o conceive_v the_o way_n of_o god_n work_v for_o perform_v his_o promise_n to_o they_o that_o venture_v upon_o command_v duty_n when_o there_o be_v no_o probability_n of_o reward_n for_o so_o do_v and_o to_o help_v they_o the_o more_o confidenty_n to_o expect_v the_o promise_a reward_n of_o duty_n though_o there_o be_v no_o appearance_n of_o it_o be_v represent_v the_o lord_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o creator_n who_o give_v a_o be_v to_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o and_o therefore_o man_n may_v cheerful_o follow_v their_o duty_n to_o he_o and_o particular_o give_v of_o their_o substance_n for_o relief_n of_o his_o poor_a people_n though_o they_o see_v no_o probability_n of_o recompense_n for_o so_o do_v hence_o learn_v 1._o a_o faithful_a minister_n must_v not_o only_o press_v duty_n and_o enforce_v the_o same_o by_o reason_n but_o also_o he_o must_v careful_o foresee_v what_o reason_n people_n may_v pretend_v to_o hinder_v they_o from_o duty_n or_o discourage_v they_o in_o it_o and_o demonstrat_fw-la the_o levity_n and_o weakness_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o may_v have_v weight_n with_o they_o to_o make_v they_o delay_v their_o duty_n or_o neglect_v the_o opportunity_n thereof_o for_o so_o do_v this_o heavenly_a preacher_n here_o after_o he_o have_v by_o several_a reason_n press_v the_o duty_n of_o charity_n he_o discover_v the_o hindrance_n thereof_o and_o confute_v these_o objection_n which_o man_n ordinary_o make_v against_o it_o whereupon_o they_o neglect_v or_o delay_v it_o while_o he_o say_v he_o that_o observe_v the_o wind_n shall_v not_o sow_v and_o he_o that_o regard_v the_o cloud_n shall_v not_o reap_v etc._n etc._n 2._o we_o may_v expect_v that_o there_o will_v be_v often_o great_a appearance_n of_o bad_a success_n in_o the_o way_n of_o 〈◊〉_d duty_n and_o but_o small_a of_o the_o performance_n of_o promise_n that_o be_v make_v to_o the_o follow_v of_o it_o that_o so_o the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o respect_n to_o the_o command_n and_o the_o liveliness_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o the_o promise_n of_o reward_n may_v be_v manifest_v while_o notwithstanding_o of_o such_o discouragement_n we_o hold_v on_o
in_o duty_n for_o as_o this_o similitude_n imply_v that_o the_o husbandman_n will_v see_v many_o unseasonable_a day_n to_o hinder_v he_o from_o sow_v and_o weaken_v his_o hope_n of_o a_o good_a harvest_n so_o the_o application_n of_o it_o to_o the_o scope_n of_o this_o place_n import_v that_o many_o thing_n will_v appear_v and_o be_v suggest_v to_o hinder_v man_n from_o the_o duty_n of_o charity_n and_o the_o same_o hold_v of_o all_o other_o duty_n and_o to_o weaken_v their_o hope_n of_o the_o performance_n of_o promise_n make_v thereunto_o he_o that_o observe_v the_o wind_n shall_v not_o sow_v and_o he_o that_o regard_v the_o cloud_n shall_v not_o reap_v etc._n etc._n 3._o we_o have_v so_o much_o natural_a aversion_n to_o our_o duty_n and_o so_o much_o unbelief_n of_o the_o promise_a reward_n that_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o make_v every_o appearance_n of_o a_o difficulty_n a_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o quit_v our_o duty_n for_o though_o the_o wether_n will_v often_o be_v lower_v and_o the_o air_n tempestuous_a when_o a_o little_a after_o the_o season_n will_v be_v favourable_a enough_o yet_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o man_n be_v very_o apt_a by_o such_o small_a appearance_n of_o difficulty_n to_o be_v hinder_v from_o their_o duty_n while_o the_o wise_a man_n thus_o confute_v they_o even_o by_o relate_v their_o objection_n under_o this_o similitude_n he_o that_o observe_v the_o wind_n shall_v not_o sow_v and_o he_o that_o regard_v the_o cloud_n shall_v not_o reap_v 4._o they_o that_o do_v in_o earnest_a mind_n obedience_n to_o command_v duty_n and_o so_o will_v meet_v with_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o promise_n make_v thereunto_o must_v not_o lie_v in_o wait_n to_o observe_v difficulty_n a_o far_o off_o or_o find_v out_o what_o may_v as_o they_o ordinary_o do_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o this_o life_n they_o will_v not_o be_v so_o often_o hinder_v from_o their_o duty_n or_o discourage_v in_o it_o but_o that_o reason_v which_o have_v no_o weight_n with_o they_o in_o thing_n of_o a_o earthly_a and_o small_a concernment_n the_o same_o seem_v most_o strong_a in_o reference_n to_o the_o great_a matter_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o another_o life_n for_o here_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o man_n do_v not_o ordinary_o reason_n from_o appearance_n of_o rain_n or_o wind_n that_o they_o shall_v neglect_v to_o sow_n or_o reap_v and_o so_o of_o other_o thing_n else_o they_o will_v seldom_o or_o never_o do_v what_o they_o be_v seldom_o or_o never_o find_v to_o neglect_v in_o the_o ordinary_a season_n thereof_o and_o yet_o that_o
