or_o preach_v by_o the_o tongue_n of_o man_n to_o man_n be_v no_o more_o but_o a_o humane_a expression_n or_o dead_a letter_n yet_o the_o thing_n therein_o contain_v be_v to_o man_n the_o unchangeable_a mind_n of_o jehovah_n and_o he_o will_v make_v it_o good_a upon_o they_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o work_n which_o they_o have_v do_v in_o the_o body_n whether_o they_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n to_o eternity_n and_o thus_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v a_o seed_n that_o perish_v not_o but_o be_v immortal_a in_o both_o respect_n for_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n in_o some_o sort_n as_o it_o be_v with_o seed_n in_o nature_n production_n of_o body_n which_o in_o one_o respect_n be_v perishable_a for_o all_o humane_a body_n return_v to_o the_o dust_n and_o in_o another_o respect_n it_o be_v not_o perishable_a for_o that_o seed_n have_v continue_v its_o kind_n from_o the_o creation_n and_o so_o shall_v to_o the_o world_n end_n because_o the_o seed_n carry_v in_o it_o a_o spirit_n of_o life_n virtual_o to_o this_o allude_v peter_n call_v god_n word_n a_o immortal_a seed_n and_o hence_o say_v our_o saviour_n the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v unto_o you_o be_v spirit_n and_o life_n 63._o joh._n 6.55_o 63._o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o quicken_v the_o flesh_n profit_v nothing_o and_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a seed_n so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o spiritual_a seed_n in_o some_o sort_n if_o it_o be_v not_o sow_v or_o do_v not_o fall_v in_o a_o right_a place_n or_o on_o a_o proper_a subject_n it_o lose_v its_o natural_a force_n or_o life_n to_o produce_v its_o effect_n so_o be_v it_o in_o this_o case_n as_o to_o the_o perseverance_n of_o the_o saint_n never_o total_o nor_o final_o to_o fall_v away_o for_o although_o by_o their_o inherent_a righteousness_n or_o circumcision_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n have_v make_v their_o mind_n a_o fit_a subject_n to_o receive_v that_o seed_n 16._o gal._n 5._o 2_o cor._n 2.14_o 15_o 16._o and_o so_o to_o grow_v yet_o if_o the_o saint_n afterward_o do_v quench_v the_o spirit_n force_n not_o as_o to_o itself_o but_o as_o to_o they_o in_o their_o perseverance_n for_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o wicked_a man_n the_o seed_n of_o god_n word_n have_v its_o force_n as_o to_o its_o self_n but_o it_o have_v not_o its_o force_n as_o to_o that_o man_n happiness_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o word_n be_v a_o sweet_a favour_n unto_o god_n in_o they_o that_o perish_v in_o the_o demonstration_n of_o his_o merciful_a justice_n to_o eternity_n for_o all_o be_v damn_v by_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n word_n do_v thus_o take_v various_a effect_n according_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n in_o which_o it_o fall_v be_v affirm_v by_o our_o lord_n himself_o in_o his_o exposition_n of_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n for_o when_o he_o have_v say_v the_o seed_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n thereupon_o he_o explain_v its_o various_a effect_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n and_o thereupon_o to_o his_o apostle_n he_o say_v 18._o luk._n 8._o from_o 4._o to_o 18._o take_v heed_n therefore_o how_o you_o hear_v but_o if_o it_o be_v object_v quest_n that_o this_o be_v no_o general_a rule_n because_o unto_o some_o it_o be_v give_v to_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o kingdom_n verse_n 10._o to_o other_o not_z it_o be_v a_o general_a rule_n ordinary_o answ_n and_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n word_n do_v take_v effect_n according_a to_o the_o subject_n it_o fall_v into_o according_a as_o they_o do_v improve_v their_o talon_n either_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n before_o faith_n as_o be_v describe_v or_o after_o faith_n as_o you_o have_v it_o here_o our_o lord_n say_v unto_o such_o as_o well_o as_o unto_o other_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v and_o this_o be_v a_o general_a rule_n except_o in_o case_n extraordinary_a such_o be_v that_o in_o the_o 10._o verse_n unto_o you_o it_o be_v give_v to_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o kingdom_n etc._n etc._n and_o thus_o our_o lord_n when_o he_o ascend_v he_o give_v gift_n unto_o man_n some_o to_o be_v apostle_n etc._n etc._n not_o for_o their_o own_o sake_n but_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o his_o father_n final_a end_n to_o his_o glory_n in_o carry_v on_o the_o aforesaid_a particular_a branch_n against_o the_o design_n of_o the_o apostate_n angel_n what_o this_o particular_a branch_n be_v be_v amplify_v in_o my_o second_o treatise_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v give_v to_o the_o apostle_n but_o not_o to_o other_o to_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o kingdom_n clear_o and_o infallible_o and_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o this_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o apostle_n for_o the_o first_o verse_n of_o the_o chapter_n say_v the_o twelve_o be_v with_o he_o and_o in_o the_o 9th_o verse_n they_o put_v a_o question_n which_o draw_v this_o answer_n from_o he_o in_o the_o 10._o verse_n therefore_o this_o make_v nothing_o against_o the_o aforesaid_a ordinary_a rule_n here_o we_o must_v remember_v two_o thing_n as_o to_o the_o perseverance_n of_o the_o saint_n to_o the_o foresay_a stability_n that_o be_v they_o stand_v in_o relation_n to_o a_o twofold_a contingency_n until_o they_o have_v arrive_v to_o that_o stability_n not_o to_o fall_v the_o first_o be_v the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o rule_n of_o mercy_n and_o justice_n according_a to_o which_o if_o they_o do_v not_o exercise_v their_o grace_n they_o may_v fall_v away_o total_o but_o if_o they_o do_v they_o may_v go_v on_o from_o strength_n to_o strength_n in_o zion_n or_o be_v establish_v as_o be_v prove_v and_o this_o be_v the_o first_o contingency_n and_o the_o ground_n why_o the_o lord_n in_o this_o case_n have_v put_v all_o mankind_n and_o the_o saint_n thus_o upon_o contingency_n be_v it_o suit_v with_o his_o final_a end_n for_o which_o he_o make_v both_o man_n and_o angel_n as_o former_o be_v prove_v the_o second_o contingency_n be_v the_o natural_a liberty_n of_o the_o will_n purposely_o so_o create_v by_o god_n and_o that_o also_o with_o respect_n to_o his_o final_a end_n so_o any_o man_n let_v he_o be_v what_o he_o will_v or_o can_v be_v christ_n except_v or_o any_o saint_n not_o yet_o attain_v to_o that_o stability_n may_v be_v a_o vessel_n of_o honour_n or_o dishonour_n to_o eternity_n but_o to_o clear_v this_o point_n concern_v the_o will_n of_o man_n we_o must_v always_o consider_v it_o under_o three_o distinction_n the_o first_o be_v its_o natural_a liberty_n and_o that_o be_v it_o choose_v or_o refuse_v all_o object_n or_o thing_n present_v to_o it_o as_o it_o like_v or_o dislike_v they_o and_o this_o remain_v in_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n on_o earth_n and_o also_o in_o heaven_n and_o in_o hell_n because_o it_o be_v the_o very_a nature_n of_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n the_o second_o distinction_n be_v the_o natural_a property_n of_o man_n will_n which_o be_v this_o to_o look_v to_o good_a either_o as_o it_o appear_v good_a or_o as_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o very_a true_a good_a and_o as_o the_o eye_n do_v natural_o follow_v light_n so_o this_o natural_a property_n of_o man_n will_n do_v follow_v good_a according_a as_o it_o apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v so_o this_o also_o be_v natural_a to_o the_o very_a essence_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o neither_o of_o these_o can_v be_v lose_v but_o by_o annihilation_n of_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n which_o god_n will_v never_o annihilate_v because_o it_o will_v make_v void_a his_o final_a end_n
therefore_o neither_o of_o these_o be_v lose_v in_o adam_n fall_n the_o three_o distinction_n be_v as_o concern_v the_o freedom_n of_o the_o will_n to_o righteousness_n that_o be_v right_o to_o choose_v god_n word_n and_o god_n himself_o as_o his_o chief_a good_a and_o right_o to_o refuse_v whatsoever_o be_v contrary_a to_o this_o man_n in_o the_o fall_n lose_v all_o this_o total_o and_o whatsoever_o else_o do_v tend_v to_o blessedness_n for_o although_o god_n create_v his_o nature_n in_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n yet_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n be_v not_o his_o nature_n for_o if_o it_o have_v be_v so_o it_o can_v not_o have_v be_v lose_v in_o the_o fall_n for_o the_o be_v of_o the_o creature_n depend_v not_o upon_o the_o stand_n or_o fall_v of_o adam_n but_o upon_o the_o essence_n of_o god_n only_o now_o that_o which_o do_v depend_v upon_o his_o stand_n or_o fall_v be_v every_o thing_n that_o any_o way_n tend_v to_o his_o happiness_n and_o nothing_o else_o therefore_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n by_o all_o his_o work_n do_v no_o way_n extend_v to_o the_o be_v but_o to_o the_o blessednese_n of_o the_o creature_n wherefore_o if_o man_n will_v have_v blessedness_n he_o must_v look_v only_o to_o christ_n and_o keep_v to_o his_o rule_n for_o he_o be_v the_o author_n of_o eternal_a salvation_n to_o all_o that_o obey_v he_o otherwise_o not_o for_o that_o be_v employ_v if_o it_o be_v object_v object_n that_o consequent_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v altogether_o uncertain_a and_o so_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n that_o none_o shall_v be_v save_v it_o be_v true_a answ_n there_o be_v such_o a_o possibility_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o two_o foresay_a contingency_n as_o also_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o original_a sin_n to_o bias_n the_o will_n to_o evil_n and_o in_o these_o three_o respect_n it_o be_v possible_a that_o all_o the_o saint_n may_v fail_v of_o salvation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o contingency_n pronounce_v by_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v he_o that_o believe_v and_o continue_v to_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v save_v that_o be_v employ_v if_o not_o shall_v be_v damn_v and_o notwithstanding_o the_o will_n natural_a liberty_n or_o the_o will_n be_v thus_o bias_v by_o original_a sin_n yet_o it_o be_v far_o more_o possible_a for_o all_o the_o saint_n to_o be_v save_v than_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o they_o to_o be_v damn_v for_o the_o gospel-tenor_n pronounce_v salvation_n to_o believer_n and_o they_o be_v by_o faith_n possess_v of_o the_o chief_a good_a therefore_o the_o will_n natural_a liberty_n have_v more_o reason_n to_o keep_v to_o the_o high_a good_a which_o it_o have_v possession_n of_o because_o it_o be_v suitable_a to_o the_o natural_a property_n of_o the_o will_v to_o follow_v good_a as_o the_o eye_n to_o follow_v light_n therefore_o much_o more_o this_o true_a good_a of_o which_o it_o be_v possess_v before_o any_o other_o seem_v good_a and_o whereas_o the_o will_n be_v bias_v by_o original_a sin_n to_o evil_a the_o will_n in_o the_o saint_n be_v much_o more_o bias_v according_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o their_o grace_n to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a by_o regeneration_n because_o regeneration_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o contain_v virtual_o at_o least_o the_o spirit_n of_o love_n of_o power_n and_o a_o sound_a mind_n therefore_o it_o be_v more_o possible_a that_o all_o the_o saint_n shall_v be_v save_v than_o any_o of_o they_o shall_v fail_v of_o salvation_n by_o the_o three_o contingency_n aforesaid_a if_o it_o be_v object_v object_n that_o satan_n temptation_n and_o the_o world_n allurement_n do_v forcible_o draw_v out_o original_a sin_n to_o a_o custom_n in_o actual_a sin_n and_o so_o it_o be_v likewise_o possible_a that_o the_o saint_n may_v fall_v total_o from_o good_a to_o evil_n if_o they_o exercise_v that_o degree_n of_o their_o spirit_n of_o love_n answ_n of_o power_n and_o a_o sound_a mind_n than_o they_o shall_v find_v that_o he_o that_o be_v in_o they_o be_v strong_a than_o a_o world_n of_o devil_n and_o wicked_a man_n and_o their_o own_o corruption_n to_o carry_v they_o on_o from_o strength_n to_o strength_n in_o zion_n to_o that_o stability_n as_o never_o to_o fall_v as_o be_v former_o prove_v if_o it_o be_v object_v object_n the_o saint_n through_o negligence_n in_o exercise_n of_o their_o grace_n may_v loose_v their_o first_o love_n and_o make_v shipwreck_n of_o that_o faith_n and_o conscience_n that_o be_v once_o good_a and_o so_o may_v fall_v total_o away_o in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v far_o more_o danger_n answ_n then_o in_o the_o former_a contingency_n except_o they_o return_v in_o time_n but_o if_o they_o do_v timely_o return_v although_o their_o strength_n be_v bring_v very_o low_a and_o weak_a yet_o if_o they_o do_v return_v in_o that_o small_a strength_n which_o remain_v they_o may_v be_v save_v for_o two_o reason_n first_o because_o than_o god_n will_v pardon_v their_o sin_n for_o to_o the_o saint_n it_o be_v that_o the_o text_n say_v if_o any_o man_n sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n jesus_n christ_n the_o righteous_a who_o be_v the_o propitiation_n for_o our_o sin_n etc._n etc._n second_o if_o they_o return_v in_o time_n in_o that_o small_a strength_n which_o remain_v christ_n by_o his_o spirit_n will_v assist_v and_o comfort_v they_o in_o that_o return_n if_o their_o strength_n be_v but_o as_o a_o bruise_a reed_n or_o smoke_a flax_n for_o to_o such_o he_o say_v come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o thus_o he_o do_v to_o david_n and_o peter_n and_o so_o he_o will_v to_o any_o other_o for_o he_o be_v the_o same_o god_n to_o the_o saint_n which_o suffer_v shipwreck_n by_o their_o own_o negligence_n now_o as_o then_o but_o they_o must_v thus_o come_v and_o return_v which_o be_v repentance_n for_o god_n force_v or_o compel_v the_o will_n of_o no_o man_n for_o than_o man_n will_n be_v no_o will_n no_o more_o than_o he_o do_v make_v a_o man_n to_o be_v man_n without_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n for_o so_o he_o be_v no_o man_n again_o i_o answer_v if_o the_o saint_n do_v give_v diligence_n and_o shake_v off_o negligence_n add_v to_o their_o faith_n virtue_n as_o be_v describe_v than_o god_n will_v make_v his_o word_n of_o a_o immortal_a force_n by_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n spirit_n and_o keep_v they_o through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n and_o establish_v they_o as_o mount_n zion_n that_o shall_v never_o be_v move_v therefore_o it_o be_v far_o more_o possible_a that_o all_o the_o saint_n may_v be_v save_v then_o to_o fail_v of_o salvation_n now_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o point_n be_v this_o to_o the_o saint_n that_o so_o exercise_v as_o a_o reward_n of_o their_o work_n and_o labour_n of_o love_n through_o divers_a temptation_n god_n will_v habitual_o manifest_v himself_o virtual_o to_o the_o will_n which_o will_v draw_v the_o will_v habitual_o and_o hold_v it_o to_o himself_o virtual_o at_o least_o and_o on_o this_o particular_a depend_v their_o stability_n but_o what_o this_o manifestation_n be_v shall_v be_v prove_v in_o the_o next_o chapter_n chap._n viii_o in_o which_o be_v prove_v what_o be_v that_o manifestation_n that_o so_o draw_v the_o will_n to_o keep_v to_o god_n virtual_o at_o the_o least_o first_o it_o be_v write_v luke_n 24._o 24.13_o luk._n 24.13_o our_o lord_n appear_v to_o the_o eleven_o apostle_n and_o the_o two_o man_n that_o go_v to_o emmaus_n and_o open_v to_o they_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n which_o speak_v of_o himself_o ver._n 44._o and_o the_o text_n say_v then_o he_o open_v their_o understanding_n that_o they_o may_v understand_v the_o scripture_n that_o be_v more_o clear_o the_o mystery_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o resurrection_n verse_n 45_o 46_o 47._o this_o further_a clear_n of_o the_o understanding_n in_o the_o saint_n in_o order_n to_o their_o perseverance_n and_o to_o the_o apostle_n in_o order_n to_o their_o ministry_n contain_v in_o it_o two_o thing_n the_o one_o be_v right_a information_n to_o the_o understanding_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o here_o we_o see_v christ_n to_o these_o two_o man_n inform_v they_o of_o his_o suffering_n and_o resurrection_n the_o other_o be_v he_o illuminate_v their_o mind_n by_o his_o spirit_n to_o a_o more_o right_a understanding_n of_o his_o word_n and_o so_o this_o illumination_n add_v more_o light_a to_o the_o understanding_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o his_o holy_a oracle_n and_o so_o the_o will_n be_v right_o draw_v to_o god_n for_o as_o sin_n and_o error_n shut_v up_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n of_o the_o saint_n hinder_v their_o perseverance_n so_o this_o information_n and_o illumination_n carry_v they_o on_o to_o the_o say_a stability_n
for_o the_o understanding_n from_o the_o force_n of_o this_o illumination_n and_o information_n bring_v god_n in_o christ_n to_o the_o will_n as_o its_o chief_a good_a wherefore_o the_o will_n by_o its_o natural_a liberty_n can_v but_o free_o choose_v it_o nor_o by_o its_o natural_a property_n can_v but_o follow_v it_o as_o the_o eye_n follow_v light_a thus_o the_o will_n be_v forcible_o draw_v according_a to_o its_o own_o natural_a liberty_n and_o property_n second_o 14.21_o joh._n 14.21_o our_o lord_n speak_v to_o this_o point_n as_o it_o be_v write_v john_n 14.21_o he_o that_o have_v my_o commandment_n and_o keep_v they_o he_o it_o be_v that_o love_v i_o and_o he_o that_o love_v i_o shall_v be_v love_v of_o my_o father_n and_o i_o will_v love_v he_o and_o will_v manifest_v myself_o to_o he_o that_o be_v virtual_o and_o habitual_o to_o keep_v his_o mind_n to_o christ_n 3.10_o rev._n 3.10_o rev._n 3.10_o because_o thou_o have_v keep_v the_o word_n of_o my_o patience_n i_o will_v also_o keep_v thou_o in_o the_o hour_n of_o temptation_n etc._n etc._n likewise_o 1_o thes_n 5.14_o to_o verse_n 24._o the_o apostle_n have_v lay_v down_o many_o particular_n conclude_v upon_o the_o saint_n observance_n of_o they_o faithful_a be_v he_o who_o call_v you_o who_o also_o will_v do_v it_o and_o the_o saint_n have_v inward_o leave_v in_o part_n the_o force_n of_o this_o draw_v of_o their_o mind_n to_o chrâ—st_v they_o cry_v out_o draw_v we_o o_o lord_n and_o we_o will_v follow_v thou_o and_o this_o be_v it_o when_o god_n say_v 1.1.13_o hos_fw-la 11.4_o cant._n 1.1.13_o i_o draw_v they_o with_o the_o cord_n of_o a_o man_n and_o bowel_n of_o love_n if_o the_o will_n of_o the_o saint_n can_v refuse_v god_n thus_o manifest_v obj._n but_o according_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o their_o sanctification_n free_o follow_v he_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o the_o angel_n refuse_v a_o great_a manifestation_n of_o god_n voluntary_o for_o they_o forsake_v their_o own_o habitation_n it_o be_v hard_o to_o clear_v this_o objection_n answ_n because_o in_o the_o order_n of_o nature_n god_n have_v as_o it_o be_v lock_v up_o the_o excellency_n of_o every_o superior_a creature_n from_o the_o creature_n inferior_a as_o all_o vigitable_n apprehend_v not_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o sensitives_n so_o the_o excellency_n of_o spirit_n be_v not_o apprehend_v by_o sensitives_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o man_n body_n can_v apprehend_v his_o reasonable_a soul_n although_o it_o animate_v it_o neither_o do_v the_o reasonable_a soul_n apprehend_v the_o nature_n and_o excellency_n of_o angel_n much_o less_o do_v the_o angel_n apprehend_v the_o infinite_a god_n but_o as_o he_o be_v please_v to_o stoop_v down_o to_o their_o capacity_n in_o manifestation_n of_o himself_o but_o what_o that_o manifestation_n be_v we_o know_v not_o nor_o how_o the_o angel_n do_v forsake_v it_o because_o it_o be_v prove_v that_o this_o be_v lock_v up_o from_o we_o but_o whatsoever_o that_o manifestation_n be_v it_o stand_v for_o a_o time_n contingent_a that_o they_o may_v or_o they_o may_v not_o fall_v for_o the_o text_n say_v he_o find_v not_o stability_n in_o the_o angel_n and_o the_o ground_n why_o it_o must_v thus_o stand_v upon_o a_o contingency_n for_o a_o time_n be_v this_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v establish_v in_o any_o the_o rest_n irrevocable_o to_o eternal_a misery_n i_o refer_v the_o reader_n to_o the_o 13_o chapter_n of_o my_o second_o treatise_n from_o the_o premise_n thus_o prove_v observe_v why_o god_n by_o the_o prophet_n and_o the_o apostle_n and_o by_o our_o lord_n himself_o in_o commend_v or_o blame_v man_n for_o their_o action_n principal_o refer_v it_o to_o the_o will_n as_o you_o will_v do_v
