faith_n in_o us._n for_o in_o many_o disease_n of_o the_o body_n we_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o life_n and_o yet_o we_o live_v the_o sun_n shine_v not_o in_o the_o night_n season_n nor_o when_o it_o be_v obscure_v with_o cloud_n shall_v we_o say_v therefore_o that_o there_o be_v no_o sun_n or_o that_o it_o have_v utterlie_o no_o operation_n admit_v also_o which_o yet_o may_v not_o be_v admit_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v for_o a_o time_n utterlie_o give_v we_o over_o can_v we_o conclude_v thereof_o that_o he_o will_v never_o again_o be_v merciful_a unto_o we_o nay_o he_o that_o find_v we_o and_o sovereign_a remedy_n of_o his_o grace_n so_o ancient_a and_o so_o experience_v a_o soldier_n as_o you_o be_v in_o this_o spiritual_a battle_n shall_v now_o be_v valiant_a and_o strong_a unto_o the_o combat_n our_o victory_n wherein_o though_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v hope_v from_o the_o weakness_n of_o flesh_n yet_o the_o experience_n we_o have_v have_v of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n may_v appear_v he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o have_v already_o receive_v the_o spirit_n for_o as_o the_o fire_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v quench_v where_o it_o be_v not_o so_o they_o can_v be_v say_v to_o quench_v or_o loose_v the_o spirit_n which_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o receive_v it_o then_o know_v that_o this_o precept_n do_v proper_o beelong_v to_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o they_o especial_o be_v to_o make_v a_o special_a use_n of_o it_o for_o the_o other_o it_o can_v profit_v they_o unless_o that_o as_o the_o seed_n lie_v in_o the_o ground_n a_o long_a time_n do_v afterward_o bud_v and_o become_v fruitful_a so_o this_o continue_v in_o their_o mind_n till_o they_o have_v taste_v in_o some_o good_a sort_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o then_o breed_v in_o they_o some_o carefulness_n that_o they_o do_v not_o quench_v it_o well_o then_o to_o they_o that_o have_v feel_v and_o find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o to_o they_o say_v sainte_n paul_n in_o this_o place_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o this_o if_o we_o do_v somewhat_o seriouslye_o consider_v these_o two_o question_n will_v offer_v themselves_o and_o soon_o arise_v in_o our_o mind_n first_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o second_o if_o we_o have_v it_o whether_o it_o may_v be_v lose_v again_o or_o no_o which_o if_o they_o be_v well_o and_o sufficient_o answer_v they_o will_v doubtless_o give_v great_a force_n unto_o this_o precept_n for_o the_o first_o then_o if_o we_o will_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n or_o no_o we_o must_v sure_o understande_v that_o as_o he_o know_v best_o that_o he_o have_v life_n which_o feel_v it_o in_o himself_o so_o he_o best_a know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o feel_v the_o spirit_n work_v in_o he_o and_o if_o we_o will_v further_o know_v by_o the_o peculiar_a work_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o let_v we_o mark_v these_o first_o of_o all_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o man_n but_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n if_o nothing_o but_o that_o may_v be_v attain_v by_o the_o art_n and_o industry_n of_o a_o man_n then_o sure_o in_o that_o man_n be_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o the_o spirit_n be_v from_o god_n it_o be_v from_o above_o it_o be_v above_o nature_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n do_v set_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n against_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n when_o he_o say_v we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n not_o of_o the_o world_n but_o of_o god_n beside_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v eternal_a and_o endure_v for_o ever_o but_o all_o the_o do_n and_o devise_n of_o man_n they_o perish_v and_o in_o time_n they_o have_v a_o end_n therefore_o though_o a_o man_n have_v wisdom_n with_o great_a knowledge_n though_o in_o wit_n and_o skill_n he_o pass_v and_o excel_v the_o common_a sort_n of_o man_n yet_o if_o from_o above_o he_o have_v not_o be_v enlighten_v if_o from_o heaven_n his_o wisdom_n have_v not_o be_v sanctify_v his_o knowledge_n shall_v decay_v his_o wisdom_n shall_v wyther_o like_o grass_n he_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o endure_v for_o ever_o and_o therefore_o say_v s._n paul_n we_o teach_v the_o mystery_n of_o god_n which_o none_o no_o not_o the_o prince_n and_o the_o man_n of_o this_o world_n which_o be_v above_o other_o most_o excellent_a be_v able_a to_o understande_v second_o consider_v whether_o in_o he_o there_o be_v any_o alteration_n or_o change_n for_o the_o wise_a man_n which_o be_v experâ—e_v in_o nature_n can_v say_v that_o in_o every_o generation_n there_o be_v a_o corruption_n and_o we_o see_v that_o the_o seed_n sow_v be_v much_o change_v before_o it_o grow_v up_o and_o bear_v fruit_n then_o needful_a it_o be_v that_o in_o regeneration_n there_o be_v a_o corruption_n of_o sin_n so_o that_o as_o seed_v in_o the_o ground_n so_o sin_n in_o our_o mortal_a body_n may_v decay_v that_o the_o new_a man_n may_v be_v raise_v up_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n take_v possession_n of_o our_o soul_n therefore_o the_o evangelist_n john_n do_v make_v this_o the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o it_o shall_v rebuke_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n and_o this_o so_o needful_a that_o without_o it_o there_o be_v not_o the_o spirit_n great_a and_o general_a astonishment_n by_o reason_n of_o all_o those_o great_a and_o enormous_a sin_n that_o we_o have_v commit_v and_o this_o do_v strike_v we_o down_o it_o do_v terrify_v we_o and_o hold_v we_o amaze_v wonderful_o than_o it_o deal_v with_o we_o more_o particular_o and_o beside_o that_o it_o bring_v we_o unto_o a_o special_a grief_n for_o special_a sin_n it_o do_v bereave_v we_o of_o our_o chief_a desire_n and_o bring_v we_o out_o of_o conceit_n and_o like_n with_o the_o best_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o we_o for_o than_o it_o do_v display_v before_o we_o the_o vanity_n and_o darkness_n of_o our_o understanding_n how_o unfit_a and_o unmeete_a we_o be_v to_o understande_v and_o conceive_v those_o thing_n that_o do_v above_o all_o other_o especial_o concern_v we_o then_o do_v it_o let_v we_o see_v the_o perverse_a corruption_n of_o our_o judgement_n that_o before_o god_n and_o in_o thing_n belong_v to_o god_n we_o be_v as_o bruit_n beast_n not_o able_a to_o discern_v thing_n that_o differ_v nor_o to_o put_v a_o sound_a difference_n between_o good_a ad_fw-la evil_a then_o do_v it_o let_v we_o see_v that_o our_o reason_n be_v unreasonable_a nay_o that_o it_o be_v hurtful_a unto_o we_o a_o great_a enemy_n to_o faith_n and_o a_o great_a patron_n of_o infidelity_n and_o unbelief_n when_o it_o come_v to_o our_o affection_n it_o turn_v they_o upside_o down_o it_o turn_v our_o mirth_n into_o mourning_n our_o pleasure_n into_o painfulness_n and_o our_o great_a delight_n into_o most_o bitter_a grief_n if_o it_o do_v proceed_v further_o and_o come_v once_o to_o the_o heart_n and_o to_o the_o stomach_n and_o courage_n that_o be_v in_o we_o than_o it_o cut_v we_o to_o the_o quick_a then_o do_v it_o at_o once_o throw_v we_o down_o in_o humility_n under_o the_o to_o a_o ear_n and_o yet_o then_o be_v strike_v or_o blast_v and_o other_o some_o at_o his_o good_a pleasure_n do_v come_v to_o a_o timely_a ripeness_n in_o like_a manner_n some_o tree_n be_v plant_v and_o never_o take_v root_n some_o take_v root_v but_o yet_o not_o blossom_n some_o blossom_n and_o yet_o never_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n &_o other_o some_o through_o his_o goodness_n do_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o good_a season_n if_o the_o lord_n deal_v so_o with_o the_o plant_n and_o herb_n of_o the_o field_n why_o may_v he_o not_o deal_v so_o with_o we_o the_o son_n of_o man_n if_o we_o can_v conceive_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o we_o must_v hold_v our_o peace_n for_o all_o the_o work_n of_o god_n be_v do_v in_o righteousness_n and_o all_o our_o knowledge_n be_v unperfect_a be_v not_o if_o a_o man_n be_v childless_a do_v take_v unto_o he_o some_o friend_n child_n to_o make_v he_o heir_n of_o all_o his_o good_n he_o will_v keep_v he_o upon_o like_v if_o his_o manner_n be_v honest_a he_o shall_v be_v prefer_v yea_o it_o may_v be_v set_v over_o all_o his_o house_n and_o yet_o afterward_o for_o some_o fault_n be_v quit_v cast_v off_o some_o other_o man_n take_v a_o other_o child_n for_o the_o same_o end_n and_o make_v he_o his_o heir_n indeed_o therefore_o we_o must_v think_v it_o righteous_a in_o the_o lord_n to_o deal_v thus_o with_o we_o see_v we_o be_v in_o his_o hand_n and_o we_o must_v not_o be_v offend_v though_o he_o call_v some_o and_o do_v not_o inlighten_v they_o and_o although_o he_o inlighten_v some_o and_o do_v not_o continue_v they_o and_o do_v of_o his_o great_a mercy_n continue_v some_o even_o unto_o the_o end_n let_v we_o rather_o see_v what_o use_n we_o must_v make_v of_o this_o doctrine_n first_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n that_o we_o never_o quench_v any_o grace_n or_o gift_n that_o god_n bestow_v upon_o us._n secondlye_o we_o must_v still_o labour_n to_o have_v great_a measure_n of_o gift_n for_o the_o wicked_a may_v come_v to_o have_v some_o small_a gift_n and_o such_o as_o may_v be_v quite_o take_v away_o from_o they_o last_o it_o do_v put_v a_o playné_fw-fr difference_n between_o the_o godly_a and_o the_o godless_a beweene_v they_o that_o bear_v a_o show_n of_o holiness_n and_o they_o that_o be_v indeed_o the_o holy_a one_o of_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o one_o endure_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o the_o other_o last_v for_o ever_o now_o if_o we_o require_v a_o further_a trial_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v receive_v that_o spirit_n which_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n or_o that_o which_o will_v abide_v for_o ever_o with_o we_o then_o let_v we_o mark_v these_o rule_n which_o put_v a_o plain_a difference_n between_o they_o first_o we_o must_v mark_v that_o enlighten_v and_o insight_n we_o have_v in_o to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n centaine_v it_o be_v that_o both_o the_o godly_a and_o wicked_a be_v enlighten_v but_o the_o enlighten_v of_o the_o godly_a be_v one_o and_o the_o insight_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v a_o other_o for_o that_o knowledge_n and_o insight_n which_o the_o godly_a have_v receive_v be_v certain_a and_o distinct_a and_o therefore_o in_o particular_a thing_n they_o be_v able_a to_o apply_v the_o threaten_n of_o god_n judgement_n to_o the_o humble_v of_o themselves_o and_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o comfort_v themselves_o again_o their_o knowledge_n be_v sufficient_a to_o direct_v they_o both_o general_o and_o in_o every_o particular_a duty_n and_o last_o of_o all_o it_o never_o sail_v they_o but_o direct_v they_o unto_o the_o end_n but_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v not_o so_o for_o it_o be_v confuse_v general_a and_o uncertain_a and_o therefore_o though_o they_o have_v a_o general_a knowledge_n of_o the_o threaten_n and_o of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n yet_o can_v they_o not_o make_v particular_a use_n of_o the_o same_o their_o knowledge_n be_v insufficient_a nor_o able_a to_o direct_v they_o in_o their_o particular_a action_n and_o therefore_o it_o do_v leave_v they_o in_o the_o end_n therefore_o as_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o godly_a for_o the_o clearness_n the_o certainty_n and_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o it_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o sun_n so_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v compare_v to_o the_o lightning_n which_o do_v not_o give_v any_o certain_a light_n it_o do_v not_o continue_v any_o time_n and_o when_o it_o be_v go_v man_n be_v worse_o than_o they_o be_v before_o so_o do_v it_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o wicked_a for_o beside_o that_o their_o knowledge_n do_v soon_o vanish_v there_o be_v also_o in_o they_o afterwards_o great_a and_o more_o dangerous_a darkness_n then_o there_o be_v before_o herein_o than_o we_o do_v see_v one_o plain_a and_o manifest_a note_n of_o difference_n second_o we_o come_v to_o our_o affection_n certain_a it_o be_v that_o the_o wicked_a do_v desire_v the_o help_n and_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n but_o look_v to_o the_o cause_n and_o that_o will_v show_v a_o difference_n between_o they_o and_o the_o godly_a the_o wicked_a do_v only_o seek_v help_n because_o of_o some_o extremity_n which_o they_o suffer_v they_o only_o desire_v to_o be_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n because_o they_o will_v be_v free_v from_o grief_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v common_a with_o they_o to_o say_v oh_o that_o i_o be_v out_o of_o this_o pain_n oh_o that_o this_o my_o sorrow_n be_v take_v from_o i_o by_o which_o speech_n they_o show_v that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v at_o rest_n or_o live_v at_o their_o case_n they_o will_v little_o weigh_v of_o the_o help_n or_o favour_n of_o god_n but_o the_o godly_a find_v such_o sweetness_n in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n that_o for_o the_o desire_n thereof_o they_o can_v be_v pass_v that_o these_o man_n be_v so_o trouble_v in_o mind_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o their_o trouble_n so_o befall_v they_o either_o for_o fail_v in_o some_o of_o these_o former_a thing_n or_o else_o they_o be_v rather_o afflict_v for_o trial_n of_o their_o faith_n than_o for_o punish_v of_o sin_n in_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v it_o always_o provide_v that_o we_o think_v not_o every_o conflict_n of_o conscience_n continual_o and_o chief_o to_o be_v for_o the_o pursue_v of_o our_o sin_n but_o sometime_o and_o principal_o that_o it_o come_v for_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o yet_o secondary_o or_o less_o principal_o for_o the_o scourge_v of_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o job._n whereupon_o let_v all_o man_n be_v admonish_v when_o they_o see_v good_a man_n thus_o humble_v &_o throw_v down_o in_o mind_n to_o lay_v their_o hand_n on_o their_o mouth_n from_o say_v sure_o these_o man_n be_v but_o hypocrite_n doubtless_o these_o man_n be_v great_a sinner_n the_o he_o only_o consider_v of_o the_o body_n and_o neglect_v the_o soul_n for_o my_o part_n i_o will_v never_o have_v the_o physician_n counsel_v sever_v nor_o the_o minister_n labour_n neglect_v because_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n dwell_v together_o it_o be_v convenient_a that_o as_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v cure_v by_o the_o word_n by_o prayer_n by_o fast_v by_o threaten_v or_o by_o comfort_v so_o the_o body_n also_o shall_v be_v bring_v into_o some_o temperature_n by_o physic_n by_o purge_v by_o diet_n by_o restore_v by_o music_n and_o by_o such_o like_a mean_n provide_v always_o that_o it_o be_v do_v so_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o wisdom_n of_o his_o spirit_n as_o we_o think_v not_o by_o these_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o smother_v or_o smoke_v out_o our_o trouble_n but_o as_o purpose_v to_o use_v they_o as_o preparative_n whereby_o both_o our_o soul_n and_o body_n may_v be_v make_v more_o capable_a of_o the_o spiritual_a mean_n to_o follow_v after_o as_o we_o require_v these_o thing_n to_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o ministry_n in_o such_o a_o perplexity_n so_o we_o will_v wish_v the_o person_n minister_a to_o be_v man_n learned_a and_o of_o sound_n judgement_n wise_a and_o of_o godly_a experience_n meek_a and_o of_o most_o love_a spirit_n for_o when_o the_o trouble_a patient_n shall_v be_v well_o persuade_v of_o our_o knowledge_n and_o discretion_n &_o there_o with_o all_o shall_v perceive_v we_o to_o come_v in_o tender_a and_o love_a affection_n i_o think_v a_o entrance_n be_v make_v and_o all_o prejudice_n be_v take_v away_o so_o as_o we_o may_v the_o more_o free_o work_v upon_o the_o conscience_n first_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n as_o to_o some_o cause_n of_o their_o trouble_n herein_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o put_v away_o all_o confusion_n and_o blindness_n of_o sorrrowe_n endevor_v by_o wisdom_n to_o bring_v the_o party_n wound_v to_o some_o certain_a object_n &_o matter_n of_o their_o trouble_n and_o so_o draw_v out_o of_o they_o the_o confession_n of_o some_o several_a especial_a and_o secret_a sin_n i_o say_v several_a &_o secret_a sin_n because_o i_o know_v how_o many_o through_o a_o as_o great_a as_o goliath_n yet_o it_o have_v not_o hitherto_o prevail_v against_o thy_o poor_a and_o little_a david_n i_o say_v against_o those_o few_o and_o small_a grace_n which_o the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o thou_o but_o the_o last_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o that_o be_v this_o when_o thou_o be_v careful_a to_o redeem_v that_o which_o by_o thy_o fall_n thou_o have_v lose_v &_o have_v a_o care_n to_o run_v so_o much_o fast_a forward_o by_o how_o much_o more_o thou_o have_v be_v let_v by_o thy_o fall_n than_o it_o do_v appear_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o thou_o yea_o lively_a and_o mighty_a in_o operation_n and_o such_o as_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o the_o until_o the_o day_n of_o christ._n thus_o may_v we_o in_o some_o good_a and_o competent_a measure_n try_v and_o prove_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o for_o where_o these_o fruit_n be_v to_o be_v find_v there_o be_v also_o the_o spirit_n of_o god._n for_o further_a confirmation_n whereof_o we_o may_v note_v the_o manner_n of_o speech_n where_o he_o say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n we_o do_v common_o use_v to_o say_v the_o fire_n be_v quench_v when_o the_o light_n and_o heat_n thereof_o be_v take_v away_o and_o indeed_o nothing_o can_v proper_o be_v say_v to_o be_v quench_v but_o the_o fire_n now_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n he_o give_v we_o to_o understande_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o some_o respect_n like_o unto_o
fire_n therefore_o if_o we_o do_v but_o a_o little_a consider_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o fire_n we_o shall_v a_o great_a deal_n better_a judge_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o among_o other_o these_o property_n we_o find_v to_o be_v in_o the_o fire_n first_o of_o all_o it_o will_v burn_v up_o and_o consume_v thing_n that_o may_v bâ—_n burn_v and_o consume_v and_o therefore_o light_v upon_o shawe_n stubble_n stick_n or_o such_o like_a it_o bring_v they_o to_o ash_n and_o do_v make_v they_o as_o though_o they_o have_v not_o be_v at_o all_o second_o it_o do_v purge_v and_o purify_v those_o thing_n that_o can_v abide_v to_o be_v purge_v and_o this_o it_o do_v first_o by_o take_v away_o the_o superfluity_n of_o dross_n that_o have_v over_o cover_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v purge_v then_o by_o fyne_a the_o thing_n itself_o and_o by_o make_v it_o pure_a and_o pure_a three_o it_o give_v light_a even_o in_o the_o most_o dim_a &_o dark_a place_n and_o last_o of_o all_o it_o give_v heat_n and_o with_o all_o do_v as_o it_o be_v put_v life_n into_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v capable_a of_o life_n for_o while_o a_o man_n be_v freeze_v and_o starve_a for_o cold_a he_o be_v numbde_v and_o as_o it_o be_v without_o life_n but_o be_v broughtto_n the_o fire_n he_o be_v hâ—tt_n he_o be_v reviue_v he_o be_v cheer_v and_o then_o become_v active_a &_o nimble_a these_o be_v the_o property_n of_o fire_n and_o these_o do_v in_o some_o manner_n sort_n resemble_v and_o shadow_v out_o unto_o we_o the_o work_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o first_o of_o all_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n seize_v upon_o a_o man_n and_o enter_v into_o his_o soul_n than_o it_o begin_v to_o burn_v to_o waste_v and_o consume_v in_o he_o those_o thing_n that_o will_v be_v waste_v after_o this_o sort_n evil_a affection_n noisome_a lust_n &_o other_o stubble_n which_o be_v in_o man_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v consume_v and_o burn_v second_o it_o do_v purge_v we_o from_o gross_a sin_n and_o daily_o more_o and_o more_o do_v purify_v we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v a_o clean_a and_o holy_a vessel_n and_o temple_n for_o he_o to_o rest_n and_o dwell_v in_o three_o it_o be_v a_o shine_a lamp_n ever_o burn_v and_o continual_o give_v light_n unto_o we_o in_o that_o way_n which_o we_o have_v to_o walk_v and_o last_o it_o do_v set_v we_o on_o heat_n and_o inflame_v we_o with_o a_o zeal_n of_o god_n glory_n with_o a_o care_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o with_o a_o love_n of_o all_o mankind_n yea_o withal_o it_o put_v life_n and_o lust_n into_o we_o to_o walk_v in_o that_o good_a way_n which_o it_o do_v lead_v we_o and_o to_o do_v all_o those_o good_a work_n which_o may_v glorify_v god_n or_o be_v commodious_a unto_o man_n thus_o we_o see_v what_o likelihood_n there_o be_v between_o the_o spirit_n and_o fire_n for_o which_o cause_n the_o spirit_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v compare_v unto_o fire_n nay_o it_o be_v sometime_o call_v fire_n for_o john_n say_v that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n shall_v baptise_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n &_o with_o fire_n that_o be_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v like_a unto_o the_o fire_n therefore_o as_o true_o and_o as_o certain_o as_o we_o may_v say_v that_o there_o be_v fire_n where_o we_o see_v straw_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n consume_v or_o gold_n and_o silver_n fine_o purge_v or_o great_a light_n in_o dark_a place_n or_o great_a heat_n in_o body_n that_o be_v numb_a before_n even_o so_o true_o we_o may_v say_v and_o so_o certain_o we_o may_v persuade_v ourselves_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o we_o when_o we_o see_v our_o coruption_n consume_v our_o soul_n purge_v from_o the_o dross_n of_o sin_n our_o heart_n enlighten_v and_o make_v hot_a in_o walk_v and_o work_v according_a to_o that_o light_n the_o second_o question_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v question_n whether_o that_o man_n which_o have_v once_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n may_v loose_v it_o and_o have_v it_o quench_v in_o he_o to_o this_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v to_o and_o work_v in_o diverse_a man_n diverselie_o in_o diverse_a measure_n therefore_o we_o must_v consider_v of_o the_o diverse_a work_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o then_o frame_v our_o answer_n according_o first_o then_o there_o be_v a_o light_a and_o lesser_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o that_o this_o inferior_a or_o lesser_a kind_n of_o work_v may_v be_v take_v away_o appear_v plainelye_o by_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o our_o savioure_n christ_n propound_v for_o there_o beside_o they_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n into_o good_a ground_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n some_o a_o hundred_o some_o thirty_o some_o sixty_o fold_n he_o do_v also_o make_v mention_n of_o some_o other_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o yet_o continue_v not_o and_o what_o have_v not_o these_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o yes_o doubtless_o for_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n yea_o they_o receive_v it_o glad_o &_o that_o which_o be_v more_o they_o believe_v that_o which_o they_o have_v receive_v behold_v then_o three_o fruit_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o these_o man_n and_o yet_o they_o continue_v not_o for_o they_o believe_v indeed_o but_o their_o faith_n be_v temporary_a it_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o after_o a_o time_n it_o vanish_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n depart_v from_o they_o for_o either_o the_o pleasure_n and_o profit_n of_o this_o life_n do_v draw_v out_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o dry_v they_o up_o or_o else_o the_o fiery_a heat_n of_o persecution_n do_v quite_o consume_v they_o more_o plain_a and_o notable_a for_o this_o purpose_n be_v that_o in_o the_o sixth_o to_o the_o hebrew_n for_o there_o the_o apostle_n faith_n that_o some_o may_v taste_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o thereby_o be_v make_v to_o taste_v of_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v enlighten_v to_o receive_v heavenly_a gift_n yea_o and_o to_o taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o what_o then_o sure_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o if_o such_o fall_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v be_v renew_v give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o even_o they_o which_o have_v receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o have_v be_v enlighten_v that_o have_v receive_v heavenly_a gift_n &_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v even_o such_o may_v fall_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v quench_v in_o such_o there_o be_v a_o second_o kind_n of_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o more_o thorough_a and_o effectual_a work_n which_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o from_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v it_o this_o the_o apostle_n peter_n describe_v when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o choose_a of_o god_n be_v beget_v again_o of_o the_o immortal_a seed_n of_o the_o word_n this_o be_v not_o a_o bare_a receive_n or_o a_o light_n taste_v of_o the_o word_n but_o it_o be_v a_o deep_a taste_n of_o the_o same_o whereby_o we_o be_v beget_v and_o bear_v again_o the_o apostle_n john_n set_v down_o a_o other_o note_n of_o it_o say_v that_o they_o that_o be_v thus_o bear_v again_o can_v sin_v that_o be_v they_o can_v make_v a_o occupation_n of_o sin_n they_o cannot_v fall_v flat_a away_o by_o sin_n and_o why_o even_o because_o the_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o even_o that_o seed_n wherewith_o they_o be_v beget_v to_o a_o lively_a hope_n of_o life_n even_o that_o seed_n do_v abide_v and_o will_v abide_v unto_o the_o end_n who_o so_o be_v beget_v again_o by_o this_o seed_n and_o have_v this_o seed_n abide_v in_o he_o the_o spirit_n have_v wrought_v that_o in_o he_o which_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v be_v spirit_n and_o life_n and_o in_o a_o other_o place_n he_o say_v that_o none_o shall_v take_v his_o sheep_n from_o he_o for_o the_o father_n be_v mighty_a than_o all_o and_o therefore_o in_o another_o place_n he_o say_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o elect_v shall_v be_v seduce_v thus_o than_o we_o see_v the_o question_n be_v answer_v namely_o that_o there_o be_v a_o inferior_a work_n which_o may_v be_v lose_v and_o a_o more_o effectual_a work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o from_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o this_o must_v not_o seem_v strange_a to_o we_o neither_o must_v we_o be_v offend_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v take_v some_o and_o leave_v other_o or_o that_o he_o shall_v begin_v in_o some_o and_o not_o bring_v his_o
lord_n will_v not_o take_v away_o his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o how_o can_v these_o two_o stand_v together_o first_o to_o pray_v that_o a_o new_a spirit_n may_v be_v create_v in_o he_o and_o then_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o sure_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v still_o in_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o but_o the_o grace_n &_o gracious_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v dead_a and_o go_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o they_o may_v be_v renew_v in_o he_o by_o this_o than_o we_o see_v that_o the_o very_a chief_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v quench_v even_o in_o the_o most_o godly_a when_o they_o fall_v into_o sin_n but_o yet_o that_o no_o liberty_n may_v be_v take_v hereby_o let_v we_o a_o little_a consider_v what_o grief_n and_o punishment_n they_o procure_v to_o themselves_o that_o do_v by_o any_o mean_n loose_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n first_o of_o all_o we_o must_v know_v that_o though_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n can_v be_v get_v by_o our_o labour_n yet_o it_o cause_v we_o much_o labour_n and_o we_o must_v undergo_v much_o travel_n and_o suffer_v much_o trouble_n before_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v take_v possession_n of_o we_o now_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v lose_v all_o this_o our_o labour_n seem_v to_o be_v lose_v and_o what_o grief_n be_v it_o to_o see_v the_o whole_a labour_n and_o travail_v of_o a_o man_n to_o vanish_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o second_o when_o a_o man_n receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n be_v assure_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v forgive_v he_o and_o that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n there_o do_v arise_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o great_a joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n a_o joy_n i_o say_v that_o be_v unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a and_o this_o joy_n be_v lose_v and_o go_v when_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v go_v with_o how_o great_a grief_n and_o woe_n they_o know_v that_o in_o any_o measure_n have_v taste_v of_o it_o again_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v choke_v in_o man_n than_o they_o have_v no_o hart_n to_o do_v good_a they_o have_v no_o affection_n to_o goodness_n but_o all_o be_v go_v and_o they_o be_v make_v for_o the_o time_n as_o it_o be_v a_o unprofitable_a burden_n of_o the_o earth_n what_o grief_n can_v be_v great_a than_o this_o what_o sorrow_n can_v sink_v more_o deep_a then_o that_o a_o good_a man_n shall_v be_v clean_o withhold_v from_o do_v good_a moreover_o it_o be_v sure_a that_o when_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o this_o sort_n go_v than_o he_o that_o be_v most_o righteous_a before_o may_v soon_o fall_v into_o great_a sin_n yea_o and_o which_o be_v more_o they_o shall_v also_o suffer_v the_o reproach_n of_o their_o sin_n for_o this_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o god_n make_v with_o he_o that_o though_o he_o will_v not_o take_v his_o mercy_n utter_o from_o they_o yet_o he_o will_v visit_v their_o sin_n with_o the_o rod_n and_o their_o iniquity_n with_o scourge_n and_o what_o grief_n this_o be_v the_o example_n of_o god_n child_n may_v show_v we_o what_o grief_n be_v it_o to_o noah_n become_v a_o laugh_a stock_n to_o his_o own_o son_n what_o heart-breaking_n to_o david_n by_o his_o own_o son_n to_o be_v thrust_v from_o his_o kingdom_n so_o grievous_a be_v those_o punishment_n lay_v upon_o they_o that_o if_o without_o any_o respect_n of_o hell_n or_o heaven_n we_o can_v consider_v of_o they_o we_o have_v rather_o want_v all_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n which_o they_o enjoy_v than_o we_o will_v bear_v the_o reproach_n and_o feel_v the_o pain_n which_o they_o suffer_v last_o of_o all_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v once_o decay_v they_o can_v never_o be_v repair_v and_o recover_v but_o with_o much_o sorrow_n and_o great_a danger_n for_o it_o can_v but_o breed_v much_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n to_o remember_v his_o former_a sin_n to_o examine_v and_o see_v the_o greatness_n of_o they_o to_o apply_v god_n judgement_n to_o they_o and_o to_o provoke_v himself_o to_o sorrow_n for_o they_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v to_o go_v through_o the_o pike_n and_o through_o a_o purgatory_n in_o this_o present_a life_n and_o yet_o this_o must_v be_v do_v before_o we_o can_v recover_v god_n grace_n again_o again_o it_o be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a thing_n for_o in_o such_o case_n man_n be_v bring_v as_o it_o be_v with_o jonas_n into_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o sea_n and_o as_o david_n say_v into_o the_o deep_a water_n so_o that_o all_o the_o surge_n and_o wave_n do_v pass_v and_o flow_v over_o he_o now_o we_o know_v what_o danger_n it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v thrust_v over_o head_n and_o ear_n into_o the_o deep_a water_n and_o therefore_o they_o that_o be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n be_v in_o great_a danger_n wherefore_o all_o these_o thing_n consider_v the_o loss_n of_o all_o our_o labour_n the_o loss_n of_o all_o true_a joy_n the_o unfitnesse_n to_o do_v good_a the_o readiness_n to_o sin_n the_o grief_n and_o danger_n that_o ensue_v thereof_o will_n or_o at_o the_o least_o wise_a may_v cause_v we_o to_o be_v ware_n how_o we_o quench_v the_o spirit_n and_o this_o be_v the_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n in_o humblinge_a of_o of_o we_o which_o also_o do_v furthermore_o serve_v to_o comfort_v we_o know_v that_o we_o may_v suffer_v a_o great_a decay_n of_o god_n grace_n yet_o by_o the_o rod_n or_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o by_o both_o they_o of_o this_o doctrine_n now_o more_o particular_o we_o may_v observe_v in_o this_o first_o part_n three_o thing_n first_o the_o power_n of_o the_o word_n to_o prick_v our_o conscience_n second_o that_o life_n for_o a_o man_n can_v die_v to_o sin_v but_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n neither_o can_v he_o rise_v to_o righteousness_n without_o the_o power_n of_o his_o resurrection_n now_o we_o must_v know_v that_o as_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v so_o we_o must_v also_o receive_v god_n spirit_n if_o god_n promise_v mercy_n to_o our_o child_n much_o more_o to_o we_o if_o we_o believe_v and_o receive_v his_o promise_n if_o to_o they_o which_o be_v a_o far_o of_o much_o more_o to_o they_o that_o be_v near_o and_o yet_o though_o we_o have_v be_v baptize_v a_o hundred_o year_n and_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n we_o may_v die_v in_o our_o sin_n some_o understand_v by_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o grace_n of_o god_n bestow_v on_o the_o apostle_n but_o in_o my_o judgement_n their_o opinion_n be_v not_o sound_a because_o that_o be_v a_o particular_a thing_n give_v only_o to_o they_o of_o that_o time_n this_o promise_n be_v general_a extremity_n if_o you_o take_v it_o too_o much_o to_o heart_n or_o marvel_v how_o you_o shall_v overcome_v such_o a_o temptation_n it_o will_v make_v you_o dull_a or_o desperate_a if_o you_o account_v of_o it_o to_o little_a and_o marvel_v how_o such_o thing_n shall_v come_v into_o your_o head_n which_o be_v not_o wont_a to_o be_v so_o it_o will_v make_v you_o not_o to_o strive_v and_o you_o shall_v be_v swallow_v up_o before_o you_o be_v aware_a if_o you_o account_v of_o it_o too_o fearful_o satan_n will_v oppress_v you_o before_o you_o begin_v to_o fight_v if_o you_o account_v of_o it_o too_o light_o the_o devil_n need_v not_o to_o wrestle_v with_o you_o you_o will_v overthrow_v your_o â—elfe_n therefore_o fear_v in_o respect_n of_o yourself_o fight_v bold_o in_o christ_n tremble_v at_o your_o own_o corruption_n but_o rest_n and_o trust_v in_o christ_n your_o salvation_n if_o still_o you_o be_v tempt_v and_o no_o body_n by_o you_o write_v your_o temptation_n and_o offer_v it_o to_o god_n by_o prayer_n and_o promise_v to_o he_o that_o you_o will_v ask_v counsel_n of_o his_o word_n at_o the_o mouth_n of_o his_o minister_n when_o he_o shall_v give_v you_o just_a occasion_n if_o all_o this_o help_v not_o comfort_n yourself_o with_o this_o pledge_n of_o election_n that_o you_o be_v joy_v when_o you_o feel_v your_o belief_n and_o that_o you_o be_v grieve_v lest_o you_o shall_v displease_v god_n by_o your_o unbelief_n and_o know_v that_o as_o there_o be_v a_o vicissitude_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n which_o you_o must_v use_v so_o there_o be_v also_o a_o vicissitude_n of_o temptation_n whereof_o this_o be_v one_o agianst_a which_o you_o must_v strive_v 2_o unto_o one_o that_o be_v tempt_v with_o worldly_a shame_n shame_n and_o think_v the_o distemperature_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o body_n proceed_v thereof_o he_o say_v on_o this_o sort_n fist_n know_v that_o satan_n have_v not_o a_o absolute_a power_n but_o a_o power_n by_o permission_n to_o try_v we_o against_o which_o we_o must_v arm_v ourselves_o by_o faith_n which_o will_v assure_v we_o that_o either_o the_o lord_n will_v mitigate_v our_o temptation_n if_o our_o power_n and_o patience_n be_v not_o great_a or_o else_o if_o he_o enlarge_v the_o trial_n he_o will_v increase_v our_o strength_n and_o retch_v it_o out_o according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o our_o temptation_n we_o must_v also_o pray_v that_o the_o lord_n give_v not_o out_o that_o measure_n of_o leave_n to_o the_o devil_n which_o we_o give_v out_o to_o sin_n to_o work_v rebellion_n in_o we_o against_o his_o majesty_n but_o that_o he_o will_v rather_o make_v satan_n a_o surgeon_n to_o show_v we_o our_o sin_n than_o a_o sregeant_n to_o confound_v we_o for_o our_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o policy_n of_o the_o adversary_n to_o persuade_v many_o that_o the_o weakness_n of_o their_o body_n and_o feebleness_n of_o their_o brain_n proceed_v of_o their_o temptation_n when_o indeed_o it_o come_v of_o the_o unstaidnes_n of_o their_o mind_n wander_v too_o much_o after_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o devil_n in_o that_o they_o not_o rest_v on_o the_o word_n nor_o depend_v on_o christ_n nor_o content_v themselves_o to_o be_v try_v nor_o comfort_v themselves_o by_o meditation_n attend_v to_o much_o &_o comfort_n to_o often_o with_o the_o devil_n illusion_n and_o temptation_n and_o so_o they_o comeplayne_v of_o the_o effect_n and_o not_o of_o the_o cause_n of_o their_o temptation_n be_v more_o grieve_v for_o their_o present_a suffering_n then_o for_o their_o sin_n past_a the_o root_n of_o this_o worldly_a shame_n be_v
