a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. XXXVI 1 The offerings are delivered to the workmen 5 The liberality of the people is restrained 8 The curtains of cherubims 14 The curtains of goats hair 19 The covering of skins 20 The boards with their sockets 31 The bars 35 The vail 37 The hanging for the door THen wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary according to all that the LORD had commanded 2 And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab and every wise-hearted man in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom even every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it 3 And they received of Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary to make it withal And they brought yet unto him free-offerings every morning 4 And all the wise men that wrought all the work of the sanctuary came every man from his work which they made 5 ¶ And they spake unto Moses saying The people bring much more then enough for the service of the work which the LORD commanded to make 6 And Moses gave commandment and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp saying Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary so the people were restrained from bringing 7 For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it and too much 8 ¶ * Chap. 26.3 4. XXI 1 Of the priests mourning 6 Of their hâ—liness 8 Of their estimation 7 13 Of their marriages 16 The priests that have blemishes must not miniâ—ter in the sanctuary ANd the LORD said unto Moses Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron and say unto them There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people 2 But for his kin that is near unto him that is for his mother and for his father and for his son and for his daughter and for his brother 3 And for his sister a virgin that is nigh unto him which hath had no husband for her may he be defiled 4 But ‖ Or being an husband among his people be shall not defile himself for his wife c. he shall not defile himself being a chief man among his people to profane himself 5 * Chap. 19.27 They shall not make baldness upon their head neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard nor make any cuttings in their flesh 6 They shall be holy unto their God and not profane the name of their God for the offerings of the LORD made by fire and the bread of their God they do offer therefore they shall be holy 7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore or profane neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband for he is holy unto his God 8 Thou shalt sanctifie him therefore for he offereth the bread of thy God he shall be holy unto thee for I the LORD which sanctifie you am holy 9 ¶ And the daughter of any priest if she profane her self by playing the whore she profaneth her father she shall be burnt with fire 10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren upon whose head the anointing oyl was poured and that is consecrated to put on the garments shall not uncover his head nor rend his clothes 11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body nor defile himself for his father or for his mother 12 Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God for the crown of the anointing oyl of his God is upon him I am the LORD 13 And he shall take a wife in her virginâ—ty 14 A widow or a divorced woman or profane or an harlot these shall he not take but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife 15 Neither shall he profane his seed among his people for I the LORD do sanctifie him 16 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 17 Speak unto Aaron saying Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish let him not approach to offer the ‖ Or food bread of his God 18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish he shall not approach a blinde man or a lame or he that hath a flat nose or any thing * Chap. 22.23 superfluous 19 Or a man that is broken-footed or broken-handed 20 Or crook-backt or ‖ Or too slender a dwarf or that hath a blemish in his eye or be scurvy or scabbed or hath his stones broken 21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire he hath a blemish he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God 22 He shall eat the bread of his God both of the most holy and of the holy 23 Onely he shall not go in unto the vail nor come nigh unto the altar because he hath a blemish that he profane not my sanctuarieâ— for I the LORD do sanctifie them 24 And Moses told it unto Aaron and to his sons and unto all the children of Israel CHAP. XXII 1 The priests in their uncleanness must abstain from the holy things 6 How they shall be cleansed 10 Who of the priests house may eat of the holy things 17 The sacrifices must be without blemish 26 The age of the sacrifice 29 The law of eating the sacrifice of thanksgiving ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me I am the LORD 3 Say unto them Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations that goeth unto the holy things which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD having his uncleanness upon him that soul shall be cut off from my presence I am the LORD 4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper or hath * Chap. 15.2 a †Heb. running of the reins running issue he shall not eat of the holy things until he be clean And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead or a man whose seed goeth from him 5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing whereby he may be made unclean or a man of whom he may take uncleanness whatsoever uncleanness he hath 6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even and shall not eat of the holy things unless he wash his flesh with water
I pray thee a morsel of bread in thine hand 12 And she said As the LORD thy God liveth I have not a cake but an handful of meal in a barrel and a little oyl in a cruse and behold I am gathering two sticks that I may go in and dress it for me and my son that we may eat it and die 13 And Elijah said unto her Fear not go and do as thou hast said but make me thereof a little cake first and bring it unto me and after make for thee and for thy son 14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel The barrel of meal shall not waste neither shall the cruse of oyl fail until the day that the LORD †Heb. giveth sendeth rain upon the earth 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she and he and her house did eat ‖ Or a full year many days 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not neither did the cruse of oyl fail according to the word of the LORD which he spake †Heb. by the hand of by Elijah 17 ¶ And it came to pass after these things that the son of the woman the mistress of the house fell sick and his sickness was so sore that there was no breath left in him 18 And she said unto Elijah What have I to do with thee O thou man of God art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance and to slay my son 19 And he said unto her Give me thy son And he took him out of her bosom and carried him up into a loft where he abode and laid him upon his own bed 20 And he cried unto the LORD and said O LORD my God hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn by slaying her son 21 And he †Heb. measured stretched himself upon the childe three times and cried unto the LORD and said O LORD my God I pray thee let this childs soul come †Heb. into his inward parts into him again 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah and the soul of the childe came into him again and he revived 23 And Elijah took the childe and brought him down out of the chamber into the house and delivered him unto his mother and Elijah said See thy son liveth 24 ¶ And the woman said to Elijah Now by this I know that thou art a man of God and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth CHAP. XVIII 1 In the extremity of samine Elijah sent to Abah meeteth good Obadlah 9 Obadiah bringeth Ahab to Elijah 17 Elijah reproving Ahab by fire from heaven convinceth Baals prophets 41 Elijah by prayer obtaining rain followeth Ahab to Jezreel ANd it came to pass after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year saying Go shew thy self unto Ahab and I will send rain upon the earth 2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab and there was a sore famine in Samaria 3 And Ahab called †Heb. Obadiahu Obadiah which was †Heb. over his house the governour of his house now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly 4 For it was so when †Heb. Izebel Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD that Obadiah took an hundred prophets and hid them by fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah Go into the land unto all fountains of water and unto all brooks peradventure we may finde grass to save the horses and mules alive †Heb. that we cut not off our selves from the beasts that we leese not all the beasts 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way by himself 7 ¶ And as Obadiah was in the way behold Elijah met him and he knew him and fell on his lace and said Art thou that my lord Elijah 8 And he answered him I am go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here 9 And he said What have I sinned that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab to slay me 10 As the LORD thy God liveth there is no nation nor kingdom whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee and when they said He is not there he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they found thee not 11 And now thou sayest Go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here 12 And it shall come to pass assoon as I am gone from thee that the spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not and so when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot finde thee he shall slay me but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD how I hid an hundred men of the LORDS prophets by fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water 14 And now thou sayest Go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here and he shall slay me 15 And Elijah said As the LORD of hosts liveth before whom I stand I will surely shew my self unto him to day 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him and Ahab went to meet Elijah 17 ¶ And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah that Ahab said unto him Art thou he that troubleth Israel 18 And he answered I have not troubled Israel but thou and thy fathers house in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and thou hast followed Baalim 19 Now therefore send and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty and the prophets of the groves four hundred which eat at Jezebels table 20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel 21 And Elijah came unto all the people and said How long halt ye between two ‖ Or. thoughts opinions if the LORD be God follow him but if Baal then follow him And the people answered him not a word 22 Then said Elijah unto the people I even I onely remain a prophet of the LORD but Baals prophets are four hundred and fifty men 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks and let them choose one bullock for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on wood and put no fire under and I will dress the other bullock and lay it on wood and put no fire under 24 And call ye on the name of your gods and I will call on the name of the LORD and the God that answereth by fire let him be God And all the people answered and said †Heb. The word is good It is well spoken 25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal Choose you one bullock for your selves and dress it first for ye are many and call on the name of your gods but put no fire under 26

IV. In the extremity of evils Christs kingdom shall be a sanctuary ANd in that day seven women shall take hold of one man saying We will eat our own bread and wear our own apparel onely †Heb. let the name be called upon us let us be called by thy name ‖ Or take thâ—â— away to take away our reproach 2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be †Heb. 〈…〉 beautiful and glorious and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely †Heb. so the escaping of Israel for them that are escaped of Israel 3 And it shall come to pass that he that is left in Zion and he that remaineth in Jerusalem shall be called holy even every one that is written ‖ Or to life among the living in Jerusalem 4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and shall have purged the bloud of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgement and by the spirit of burning 5 And the LORD will create upon every dwelling-place of mount Zion and upon her assemblies a * Ex. 13.21 cloud and smoke by day the shining of a flaming fire by night for ‖ Or above upon all the glory shall be †Heb. a covering a defence 6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the day-time from the heat and for a place of refuge and for a covert from storm and from rain CHAP. Mat. 21.33 Mar. 12.1 Lu. 20.9 a vineyard in †Heb. the born of the son of oyl a very fruitful hill 2 And he ‖ Or made a wall about it fenced it and gathered out the stones thereof and planted it with the choicest vine and built a towre in the midst of it and also †Heb. bewed made a wine-press therein and he looked that it should bring forth grapes and it brought forth wilde grapes 3 And now O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah judge I pray you betwixt me and my vineyard 4 What could have been done more to my vineyard that I have not done in it wherefore when I looked that it should bring forth grapes brought it forth wilde grapes 5 And now go to I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard I will take away the hedge thereof and it shall be eaten up and break down the wall thereof and it shall be †Heb. for a treading troden down 6 And I will lay it waste it shall not be pruned nor digged bâ—â— there shall come up briers and thorns I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it 7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel and the men of Judah †Heb. plant of his pleasures his pleasant plant and he looked for judgement but behold †Heb. a seab oppression for righteousness but behold a cry 8 ¶ Wo unto them that joyn * Mic. 2.2 house to house that lay field to field till there be no place that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth 9 ‖ Or This is in mine
report 20 For the bed is shorter then that a man can stretch himself on it and the covering narrower then that he can wrap himself in it 21 For the LORD shall rise up as in mount * 2 Sam. 5.20 1 Chro. 14.11 Perazim he shall be wroth as in the valley of * Josh 10.12 2 Sam. 5.25 1 Chro. 14.16 Gibeon that he may do his work his strange work and bring to pass his act his strange act 22 Now therefore be ye not muckers lest your bands be made strong for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption even determined upon the whole earth 23 ¶ Give ye ear and hear my voice hearken and hear my speech 24 Doth the plowman plow all day to sowe doth he open and break the clods of his ground 25 When he hath made plain the face thereof doth he not cast abroad the fitches and scatter the cummin and cast in ‖ Or the wheat in the principal place and barley in the appointed place the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the ‖ Or sprit rie in their †Heb. border place 26 ‖ Or and he bindeth it in suth sort as his God doth teach him For his God doth instruct him to discretion and doth teach him 27 For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing-instrument neither is a cart-wheel turned about upon the cummin but the fitches are beaten out with a staff and the cummin with a rod. 28 Bread corn is bruised because he will not ever be threshing it nor break it with the wheel of his cart nor bruise it with his hor-men 29 This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts which is wonderful in counsel and excellent in working CHAP. XXIX 1 Gods heavy judgement upon Jerusalem 7 The unsatiableness of her enemies 9 The senslesness 13 and deep hypocrisie of the Jews 18.1 promise of sanctification to the godly ‖ Or O Ariel that is The lion of God WO to Ariel to Ariel ‖ Or of the city the city where David dwelt add ye year to year let them †Heb. cut off the heals kill sacrifices 2 Yet I will distress Ariel and there shall be heaviness and sorrow and it shall be unto me as Ariel 3 And I will camp against thee round about and will lay siege against thee with a mount and I will raise forts against thee 4 And thou shalt be brought down and shalt speak out of the ground and thy speech shall be low out of the dust and thy voice shall be as of one that hath a familiar spirit out of the ground and thy speech shall †Heb. peep of chiep. whisper out of the dust 5 Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away yea it shall be at an instant suddenly 6 Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder and with earthquake and great noise with storm and tempest and the flame of devouring fire 7 ¶ And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel even all that fight against her and her munition and that distress her shall be as a dream of a night-vision 8 It shall even be as when a hungry man dreameth and behold he eateth but he awaketh and his soul is empty or as when a thirsty man dreameth and behold he drinketh but he awaketh and behold he is faint and his soul hath appetite so shall the multitude of all the nations be that fight against mount Zion 9 ¶ Stay your selves and wonder ‖ Or take your pleasure and riot cry ye out and cry they are drunken but not with wine they stagger but not with strong drink 10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep and hath closed your eyes the prophets and your †Heb. heads rulers the seers hath he covered 11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a ‖ Or letter book that is sealed which men deliver to one that is learned saying Read this I pray thee and he saith I cannot for it is sealed 12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned saying Read this I pray thee and he saith I am not learned 13 ¶ Wherefore the Lord said * Matth. 15.8 Mark 7.6 Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth and with their lips do honour me but have removed their heart far from me and their fear towards me is taught by the precept of men 14 Therefore behold †Heb. I will add I will proceed to do a marvellous work amongst this people even a marvellous work and a wonder * Jer. 49.7 Obad. vers 8. 1 Cor. 1.19 for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid 15 Wo unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD and their works are in the dark and they say * Ecclus 23.18 Who seeth us and who knoweth us 16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potters clay for shall the * Chap. 45.9 work say of him that made it He madâ— me not or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it He had no understanding 17 Is it not yet a very little while and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest 18 ¶ And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness 19 The meek also †Heb. shall add shall increase their joy in the LORD and the poor among men shall rejoyce in the holy One of Israel 20 For the terrible one is brought to nought and the scorner is consumed and all that watch for iniquity are cut off 21 That make a man an offender for a word and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate and turn aside the just for a thing of nought 22 Therefore thus saith the LORD who redeemed Abraham concerning the house of Jacob Jacob shall not now be ashamed neither shall his face now wax pale 23 But when he seeth his children the work of mine hands in the midst of him they shall sanctifie my name and sanctifie the holy One of Jacob and shall fear the God of Israel 24 They also that erred in spirit †Heb. shall know understanding shall come to understanding and they that murmured shall learn doctrine CHAP. have mercy upon him and to our God for †Heb. he will multiply to pardon he will abundantly pardon 8 ¶ For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways saith the LORD 9 For as the heavens are higher then the earth so are my ways higher then your ways and my thoughts then your thoughts 10 For as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven and returneth not thither but watereth the earth and maketh it bring forth and bud that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth it shall not return unto me void but it shall accomplish that which I please and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it 12 For ye shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace the mountains and the hills shall * Ch. 35. â— break forth before you into singing and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands 13 In stead of the thorn shall come up the fir-tree and in stead of the brier shall come up the myrtle-tree and it shall be to the LORD for a name for an everlasting signe that shall not be cut off CHAP. LVI 1 The prophet exhorteth to sanctification 3 He promiseth it shall be general without respect of persons 9 He inveigheth against blinde watchmen THus saith the LORD Keep ye ‖ Or equity judgement and do justice for my salvation is near to come and my righteousness to be revealed 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this and the son of man that layeth hold on it that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it and keepeth his hand from doing any evil 3 ¶ Neither let the son of the stranger that hath joyned himself to the LORD speak saying The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people neither let the eunuch say Behold I am a drie tree 4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths and choose the things that please me and take hold of my covenant 5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better then of sons and of daughters I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off 6 Also the sons of the stranger that joyn themselves to the LORD to serve him and to love the name of the LORD to be his servants every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it and taketh hold of my covenant 7 Even them will I * Ch. 2.2 bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar for * Mat. 21.13 Mar. 11.17 Lu. 19.46 mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people 8 The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith Yet will I gather others to him †Heb. to his gathered besides those that are gathered unto him 9 ¶ All ye beasts of the field come to devour yea all ye beasts in the forest 10 His watchmen are blinde they are all ignorant they are all dumb dogs they cannot bark ‖ Or dreaming or talking in their sleep sleeping lying down loving to slumber 11 Yea they are †Heb. strong of appetite greedy dogs which †Heb. know not to be satisfied can never have enough and they are shepherds that cannot understand they all look to their own way every one for his gain from his quarter 12 Come ye say they I will fetch wine and we will fill our selves with strong drink and to morrow shall be as this day and much more abundant CHAP. LVII 1 The blessed death of the righteous 3 God reproveth the Jews for their whorish idolatry 13 He giveth evangelical promises to the penitent THE righteous perisheth and no man layeth it to heart and †Heb. men of kindness or godliness * Ps 12.1 Mic. 7.2 merciful men are taken away none considering that the righteous is taken away ‖ Or from that which is evil from the evil to come 2 He shall ‖ Or go in peace enter into peace they shall rest in their beds each one walking ‖ Or before him in his uprightness 3 ¶ But draw near hither ye sons of the sorceress the seed of the adulterer and the whore 4 Against whom do ye sport your selves against whom make ye a wide mouth and draw out the tongue are ye not children of transgression a seed or falshood 5 Enflaming your selves ‖ Or among the oaks with idols * 2 Kin. 16.4 under every green tree slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks 6 Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion they they are thy lot even to them hast thou poured a drink-offering thou hast offered a meat-offering Should I receive comfort in these 7 Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice 8 Behinde the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance for thou hast discovered thy self to another then me and art gone up thou hast enlarged thy bed and ‖ Or hewed it for thy self larger then theirs made thee a covenant with them thou lovedst their bed ‖ Or thou providest room where thou sawest it 9 And ‖ Or thou respectedst the king thou wentest to the king with ointment and didst increase thy perfumes and didst send thy messengers far off and didst debase thy self even unto hell 10 Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way yet saidst thou not There is no hope thou hast found the ‖ Or diving life of thine hand therefore thou wast not grieved 11 And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared that thou hast lied and hast not remembred me nor laid it to thy heart have not I held my peace even of old and thou fearest me not 12 I will declare thy righteousness and thy works for they shall not profit thee 13 ¶ When thou criest let thy companies deliver thee but the wind shall carry them all away vanity shall take them but he that putteth his trust in me shall posses the land and shall inherit my holy mountain 14 And shall say * Chap. â—0 3 〈◊〉 62.10 Cast ye up cast ye up prepare the way taken up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people 15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity whose name is Holy I dwell in the high and holy place with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones 16 For I will not contend for ever neither will I be always wroth for the spirit should fail before me and the souls which I have made 17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth and smote him
shall eat the riches of the Gentiles and in their glory shall you boast your selves 7 ¶ For your shame you shall have double and for confusion they shall rejoyce in their portion therefore in their land they shall possess the double everlasting joy shall be unto them 8 For I the LORD love judgement I hate robbery for burnt-offering and I will direct their work in truth and I will make an everlasting covenant with them 9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles and their offspring among the people all that see them shall acknowledge them that they are the seed which the LORD hath blessed 10 I will greatly rejoyce in the LORD my soul shall be joyful in my God for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness as a bridegroom †Heb. decketh as a priest decketh himself with ornaments and as a bride adorneth her self with her jewels 11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations CHAP. LXII 1 The fervent desire of the prophet to confirm the church in Gods promises 5 The office of the ministers unto which they are incited in preaching the gospel 10 and preparing the people thereto FOr Zions sake will I not hold my peace and for Jerusalems sake I will not rest until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth 2 And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness and all kings thy glory and thou shalt be called by a new name which the mouth of the LORD shall name 3 Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God 4 * Hos 1.10 1 Pet. 2.10 Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate but thou shalt be called ‖ That is My delight is in ber Hephzi-bah and thy land ‖ That is Married Beulah for the LORD delighteth in thee and thy land shall be married 5 For as a young man marrieth a virgin so shall thy sons marry thee and †Heb. with the joy of the bridegroom as the bridegroom rejoyceth over the bride so shall thy God rejoyce over thee 6 I have set watchmen upon thy walls O Jerusalem which shall never hold their peace day nor night ‖ Or ye that are the LORD remembrancers ye that make mention of the LORD keep not silence 7 And give him no †Heb. silence rest till he establish and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth 8 The LORD hath sworn by his right hand and by the arm of his strength †Heb. If I give c. image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up 8 ¶ Wherefore at that time certain Caldeans came â—â—â—r and accused the Jews 9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar O king live for ever 10 Thou O king hast made a decree that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick shall fall down and worship the golden image 11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fierâ— furnace 12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego these men O king †Cald. have sâ—t never and upon thâ—s have not regarded thee they serve not thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 13 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego then they brought these men before the king 14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them Is it ‖ Or of purpose at Ex. 21.23 true O Shadrath Meshach and Abed-nego do not ye serve my gods nor worship the golden image which I have set up 15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick ye fall down and worship the image which I have made well but if ye worship not ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands 16 Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king O Nebuchadnezzar we are not careful to answer thee in this matter 17 If it be so our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and he will deliver us out of thine hand O king 18 But if not be it known unto thee O king that we will not serve thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 19 ¶ Then was Nebuchadnezzar †Cald. filled full of fury and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego therefore he spake and commanded that they should hear the furnace one seven times more then it was wont to be heat 20 And he commanded the †Cald. mighty of strengh most mighty men that were in his army to binde Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace 21 Then these men were bound in their ‖ Or mantles coats their hosen and their ‖ Or turbants hats and their other garments and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 22 Therefore because the kings †Cald. word commandment was urgent and the furnace exceeding hot the ‖ Or spark flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego 23 And these three men Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied and rose up in haste and spake and said unto his ‖ Or governours counsellours Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire They answered and said unto the king True O king 25 He answered and said Lo I see four men loose walking in the midst of the fire and †Cald. â—oâ—re is no â—urt in â—com they have no hurt and the form of the fourth is like the son of God 26 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the †Cald. 〈◊〉 mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spake and said Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego ye servants of the most high God come forth and come hither Then Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego came forth of the midst of the fire 27 And the princes governours and captains and the kings counsellours being gathered together saw these men upon whose bodies the fire had no power nor was an hair of their head singed neither were their coats changed nor the smell of fire had passed on them 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake and said Blessed be the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego who hath sent his angel and delivered his servants that trusted in him and have changed the kings word and yeelded their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God 29 Therefore †Gold a decree is made by me I make a decree That every people nation and language which speak †Cald. â—â—our â— any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego shall be * Ch. 2.5 †Cald. made pieces cut in pieces and their houses shall be made a dunghil because there is no other god that can deliver after this sort 30 Then the king †Cald. made to prosper promoted Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon CHAP. IV. 1 Nebuchadnezzar confesseth Gods kingdom 4 maketh relation of his dream which the Magitians could not interpret 8 Daniel beareth the dream 19 He interprets it 28 The story of the event NEbuchadnezzar the king unto all people nations and languages that dwell in all the earth Peace be multiplied unto you 2 †Cald. It was feemly before me I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me 3 How great are his signs and how mighty are his wonders his kingdom is * Ch. 2.44 an everlasting kingdom and his dominion is from generation to generation 4 ¶ I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house and flourishing in my palace 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream 7 Then came in the magicians the astrologers the Caldeans and the soothsayers and I told the dream before them but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof 8 ¶ But at the last Daniel came in before me whose name was Belteshazzar according to the name of my God and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods and before him I told the dream saying 9 O Belteshazzar * Ch. 2.48 master of the magicians Because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee and no secret troubleth thee tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen and the interpretation thereof 10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed †Cald. I was seeing I saw and behold a tree in the midst of the earth and the height thereof was great 11 The tree grew and was strong and the height thereof reached unto heaven and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth 12 The leaves thereof were fair and the fruit thereof much and in it was meat for all the beasts
shall be great among the heathen saith the LORD of hosts 12 ¶ But ye have profaned it in that ye say The table of the LORD is polluted and the fruit thereof even his meat is contemptible 13 Ye said also Behold what a weariness is it ‖ Or whereas you might have blown it away and ye have snuffed at it saith the LORD of hosts and ye brought that which was torn and the lame and the sick thus ye brought an offering should I accept this of your hands saith the LORD 14 But cursed be the deceiver ‖ Or in whose flock i◠which hath in his flock a male and voweth and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing for I am a great King saith the LORD of hosts and my name is dreadful among the heathen CHAP. II. 1 He sharply reproveth the priests for neglecting their covenant 11 and the people for idolatry 14 for adultery 17 and for infidelity ANd now O ye priests this commandment is for you 2 * Lev. 26.14 c. If ye will not hear and if ye will not lay it to heart to give glory unto my name saith the LORD of hosts I will even send a curse upon you and I will curse your blessing yea I have cursed them already because ye do not lay it to heart 3 Behold I will ‖ Or reprove corrupt your seed and †Heb. statter spread dung upon your faces even the dung of your solemn feasts and ‖ Or it shall take you away to it one shall take you away with it 4 And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you that my covenant might be with Levi saith the LORD of hosts 5 My covenant was with him of life and peace and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he seared me and was afraid before my name 6 The law of truth was in his mouth and iniquity was not found in his lips he walked with me in peace and equity and did turn many away from iniquity 7 For the priests lips should keep knowledge and they should seek the law at his mouth for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts 8 But ye are departed out of the way ye have caused many to ‖ Or fall in the law stumble at the law ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi saith the LORD of hosts 9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people according as ye have not kept my ways but ‖ Or lifted up the face gainst †Heb. accepted faces have been partial in the law 10 * Eph. 4.6 Have we not all one father hath not one God created us why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother by profaning the covenant of our fathers 11 ¶ Judah hath dealt treacherously and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he ‖ Or ought to love loved and hath married the daughter of a strange god 12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this ‖ Or him that waketh and him that answereth the master and the scholar out of the tabernacles of Jacob and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts 13 And this have ye done again covering the altar of the LORD with tears with weeping and with crying out insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more or receiveth it with good will at your hand 14 ¶ Yet ye say Wherefore Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth against whom thou hast dealt treacherously yet is she thy companion and the wife of thy covenant 15 And did not he make one yet had he the ‖ Or excellency residue of the spirit and wherefore one that he might seek †Heb. a seed of God a godly seed therefore take heed to your spirit and let none deal ‖ Or unfaithfully treacherously against the wife of his youth 16 For the LORD the God of Israel saith ‖ Or if he hate her put her away that he hateth †Heb. to put away putting away for one covereth violence with his garment saith the LORD of hosts therefore take heed to your spirit that you deal not treacherously 17 ¶ Ye have wearied the LORD with your words yet ye say Wherein have we wearied him When ye say Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD and he delighteth in them or Where is the God of judgement CHAP. III. 1 Of the messenger majesty and grace of Christ 7 Of the rebellion 8 sacriledge 13 and infidelity of the people 16 The promise of blessing to them that fear God BEhold * Mat. 11.10 Mar. 1.2 Luk. 1.76 and 7.27 I will send my messenger and he shall prepare the way before me and the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple even the messenger of the covenant whom ye delight in behold he shall come saith the LORD of hosts 2 But who may abide the day of his coming and who shall stand when he appeareth for he is like a refiners fire and like fullers sope 3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver and he shall purifie the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness 4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD as in the days of old and as in ‖ Or ancient former years 5 And I will come near to you to judgement and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against false swearers and against those that ‖ Or defraud oppress the hireling in his wages the widow and the fatherless and that turn aside the stranger from his right and fear not me saith the LORD of hosts 6 For I am the LORD I change not therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed 7 ¶ Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances and have not kept them * Zech. 1.3 return unto me and I will return unto you saith the LORD of hosts but ye said Wherein shall we return 8 ¶ Will a man rob God yet ye have robbed me but ye say Wherein have we robbed thee In tithes and offerings 9 Ye are cursed with a curse for ye have robbed me even this whole nation 10 Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in mine house and prove me now herewith saith the LORD of hosts if I will not open you the * Gen. 7.11 windows of heaven and †Heb. empty out Pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes and he shall not †Heb. corrupt destroy the fruits
peaceable for all men 9 Both by changing our purposes and always judging things that are evident with more equal proceeding 10 For Aman a Macedonian the son of Amadatha being indeed a stranger from the Persian bloud and far distant from our goodness and as a stranger received of us 11 Had so far forth obtained the favour that we shew toward every nation as that he was called our father and was continually honoured of all men as the next person unto the king 12 But he not bearing his great dignity went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life 13 Having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction as well of Mardocheus who saved our life and continually procured our good as also of blameless Esther partaker of our kingdom with their whole nation 14 For by these means he thought finding us destitute of friends to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians 15 But we finde that the Jews whom this wicked wretch hath delivered to utter destruction are no evil-doers but live by most just laws 16 And that they be children of the most High and most Mighty living God who hath ‖ Or prosperth ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitours in the most excellent manner 17 Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Aman the son of Amadatha 18 For he that was the worker of these things is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family God who ruleth all things speedily rendring vengeance to him according to his deserts 19 Therefore ye shall publish the copy of this letter in all places that the Jews may freely live after their own laws 20 And ye shall aid them that even the same day being the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar they may be avenged on them who in the time of their affliction shall set upon them 21 For Almighty God hath turned to joy unto them the day wherein the chosen people should have perished 22 You shall therefore among your solemn feasts keep it an high day with all feasting 23 That both now and hereafter there may be safety to us and the well-affected Persians but to those which do conspire against us a memorial of destruction 24 Therefore every city and countrey whatsoever which shall not do according to these things shall be destroyed without mercy with fire and sword and shall be made not onely unpassable for men but also most hateful to wilde beasts and fowls for ever ¶ The WISDOM of SOLOMON CHAP. I. 2 To whom God sheweth himself 4 and wisdom her self 6 An evil speaker cannot his hid 12 We procure our own destruction 13 For God treated not death LOve * 1 King 3.3 Isa 56.1 righteousness ye that be judges of the earth think of the Lord with a good heart and in simplicity of heart seek him 2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not and sheweth himself unto such as do not * Deut. 4.29 2 Chr. 15.4 distrust him 3 For froward thoughts separate from God and his power when it is tried ‖ Or maketh manifest reproveth the unwise 4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin 5 * Jer. 4.22 For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit and remove from thoughts that are without understanding and ‖ Or is rebuked or sâ—with it sdf will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in 6 For wisdom is a * Gal. 5.22 loving spirit and will not acquit a blasphemer of his ‖ Or lâ—â—â— words for God is witnes of his reins and a true beholder of his heart and a hearer of his tongue 7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world and that which ‖ Or upholdeth containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice 8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid neither shall vengeance when it punisheth pass by him 9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly and the found of his words shall come unto the Lord for the ‖ Or reproving manifestation of his wicked deeds 10 For the ear of jealousie heareth all things and the noise of murmurings is not hid 11 Therefore beware of murmuring which is unprofitable and refrain your tongue from backbiting for there is no word so secret that shall go for nought and the mouth that ‖ Or sandereth belieth slayeth the soul 12 Seek not death in the errour of your life and pull not upon your selves * Deut. 4.23 24. destruction with the works of your hands 13 For God made not death neither hath he pleasure in the destruction of the living 14 For he created all things that they might have their being and the generations of the world â—ere healthful and there is no poison of destruction in them nor the kingdom of death upon the earth 15 For righteousness is immortal 16 But ungodly men with their works and words called it to them for when they thought to have it their friend they consumed to nought and made a covenant with it because they are worthy to take part with it CHAP. II. 1 The wicked think this life short 5 and of no other after this 6 Therefore they will take their pleasure in this 10 and conspire against the just 21 What that is which doth blinde them FOr the ungodly said reasoning with themselves but not aright * Job 7.1 Our life is short and tedious * Mat. 22.23 1 Cor. 15.32 and in the death of a man there is no remedy neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave 2 For we are born at all adventure and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke and a little spark in the moving of our heart 3 Which being extinguished our body shall be turned into ashes and our spirit shall vanish as the ‖ Or â—â—â—ist soft air 4 And our name shall be forgotten in time and no man shall have our works in remembrance and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud and shall be dispersed as a mist that is driven away with the beams of the sun and ‖ Or oppressed overcome with the heat thereof 5 * 1 Chr. 29.15 For our time is a very shadow that passeth away and after our end there is no returning for ‖ Or be it is fast sealed so that no man cometh again 6 Come on therefore let us enjoy the good things * Isa 22.13 35 12. 1 Cor. 15.32 that are present and let us ‖ Or â—â—nestly speedily use the creatures like as in youth 7 Let us fill our selves with costly wine and ointments and set no flower of the spring pass by us 8 Let us crown our selves with rose-buds before they be withered
loved her 4 For she is ‖ Or â—uther privy to the mysteries of the knowledge of God and a ‖ Or choosâ—â— lover of his works 5 If riches be a possession to be desired in this life what is richer then wisdom that worketh all things 6 And if * Exod. 31.3 6. prudence work who of all that are is a more cunning workman then she 7 And if a man love righteousness her labours are vertues for she teacheth temperance and prudence justice and fortitude which are such things as men can have nothing more profitable in their life 8 If a man desire much experience she knoweth things of old and conjectureth aright what is to come she knoweth the subtilties of speeches and can expound dark sentences she foreseeth signs and wonders and the events of seasons and times 9 Therefore I purposed to take her to me to live with me knowing that she †Gr. will would be a counsellour of good things and a comfort in cares and grief 10 For her sake I shall have estimation among the multitude and honour with the elders though I be young 11 I shall be found of a quick conceit in judgement and shall be admired in the sight of great men 12 * Job 29.8 9 10. When I hold my tongue they shall bide my leisure and when I speak they shall give good ear unto me if I talk much they shall lay their hands upon their moâ—th 13 Moreover by the means of her I shall obtain immortality and leave behinde me an everlasting memorial to them that come after me 14 I shall ‖ Or govern set the people in order and the nations shall be subject unto me 15 Horrible tyrants shall be afraid when they do but hear of me I shall ‖ Or appear be found good among the multitude and valiant in war 16 ‖ Or being entred into mine house After I am come into mine house I will repose my self with her for her conversation hath no bitterness and to live with her hath no sorrow but mirth and joy 17 Now when I considered these things in my self and * Prov. 7.3 pondered them in my heart how that to be allied unto wisdom is immortality 18 And great pleasure it is to have her friendship and in the works of her hands are infinite riches and in the exercise of conference with her prudence and in talking with her a ‖ Or fame good report I went about seeking how to ‖ Or marry her take her to me 19 For I was a witty childe and had a good spirit 20 Yea rather being good I came into a body undefiled 21 Nevertheless when I perceived that I could not otherwise obtain her except God gave her me and that was a point of wisdom also to know whose gift she was I ‖ Or went prayed unto the Lord and besought him and with my whole heart I said CHAP. IX 1 A prayer unto God for his wisdom 6 without which the best man is nothing worth 13 neither can he tell how to please God O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy who hast made all things with thy word 2 And ordained man through thy wisdom that he should * Gen. 1.28 have dominion over the creatures which thou hast made 3 And order the world according to equity and righteousness and execute judgement with an upright heart 4 Give * 1 King 3.9 me wisdom that sitteth by thy throne and reject me not from among thy children 5 For I * Ps 116.16 thy servant and son of thine hand-maid am a feeble person and of a short time and too young for the understanding of judgement and laws 6 For though a man be never so perfect among the children of men yet if thy wisdom be not with him he shall be nothing regarded 7 Thou hast chosen me to be a * 1 Chr. 28.5 2 Chr. 1.9 king of thy people and a judge of thy sons and daughters 8 Thou hast commanded me to build a temple upon thy holy mount and an altar in the city wherein thou dwellest a resemblance of the holy tabernacle which thou hast prepared from the beginning 9 And * Pro. 8.22 Joh. 1.2 3 10. wisdom was with thee which knoweth thy works and was present when thou madest the world and knew what was acceptable in thy sight and right in thy commandments 10 O send her out of thy holy heavens and from the throne of thy glory that being present she may labour with me that I may know what is pleasing unto thee 11 For she knoweth and understandeth all things and she shall lead me soberly in my doings and preserve me ‖ Or by her power or glory in her power 12 So shall my works be acceptable and then shall I judge thy people righteously and be worthy to sit in my fathers seat 13 For * Is 40.13 Rom. 11.34 1 Cor. 2.16 what man is he that can know the counsel of God or who can think what the will of the Lord is 14 For the thoughts of mortal men are ‖ Or fearful miserable and our devices are but uncertain 15 For the corruptible body presseth down the soul and the earthy tabernacle weigheth down the minde that museth upon many things 16 And hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth and with labour do we finde the things that are †Gr. at hand before us but the things that are in heaven who hath searched out 17 And thy counsel who hath known except thou give wisdom and send thy holy spirit from above 18 For so the ways of them which lived on the earth were reformed and men were taught the things that are pleasing unto thee and were saved through wisdom CHAP. X. 1 What wisdom did for Adam 4 Noe 5 Abraham 6 Lot and against the five cities 10 for Jacob 12 Joseph 16 Moses 17 and the Israelites SHe preserved the first-formed father of the world that was created alone and brought him out of his fall 2 And * Gen. 1.28 gave him power to rule all things 3 * Gen. 4.8 But when the unrighteous went away from her in his anger he perished also in the sury wherewith he murdered his brother 4 For whose cause the * Gen. 7 2â— earth being drowned with the floud wisdom again preserved it and directed the course of the righteous in a piece of wood of small value 5 Moreover * Gen. 11.9 the nations in their wicked conspiracy being confounded she found out the righteous and preserved him blameless unto God and * Gen. 22.10 kept him strong ‖ Or in against his tender compassion toward his son 6 * Gen. 19.16 When the ungodly perished she delivered the righteous man who fled from the fire which fell down upon †Gr. Pentapoâ—â—â— the five cities 7 Of whose wickedness even to this day the waste land that smoketh
God we have sinned we have done ungodly we have dealt unrighteously in all mine ordinances 13 Let thy wrath turn from us for we are but a few left among the heathen where thou hast scattered us 14 Hear our prayers O Lord and our petitions and deliver us for thine own sake and give us favour in the sight of them which have led us away 15 That all the earth may know that thou art the Lord our God because †Gr. thy came is called upon Israel Israel and his posterity is called by thy name 16 O Lord * Deut. 26.15 Isa 63.15 look down from thy holy house and consider us bow down thine ear O Lord to hear us 17 Open thine eyes and behold for the * Ps 6.5 115.17 Isa 38.15 19. dead that are in the graves whose †Gr. spirit or sisâ— souls are taken from their bodies will give unto the Lord neither praise nor righteousness 18 But the soul that is greatly vexed which goeth stooping and feeble and the eyes that sail and the hungry soul will give thee praise and righteousness O Lord. 19 * Dan. 9.18 Therefore we do not make our humble supplication before thee O Lord our God for the righteousness of our fathers and of our kings 20 For thou hast sent out thy wrath and indignation upon us as thou hast spoken by thy servants the prophets saying 21 * Jer. 27.11 Thus faith the Lord Bow down your shoulders to serve the king of Babylon so shall ye remain in the land that I gave unto your fathers 22 But if ye will not hear the voice of the Lord to serve the king of Babylon 23 I will cause to cease out of the cities of Juda and from without Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of joy the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride and the whole land shall be desolate of inhabitants 24 But we would not hearken unto thy voice to serve the king of Babylon therefore hast thou made good the words that thou spakest by thy servants the prophets namely that the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers should be taken out of their places 25 And so they are cast out to the heat of the day and to the frost of the night and they died in great miseries by famine by sword and by pestilence 26 And the house which is called by thy name hast thou said waste as it is to be seen this day for the wickedness of the house of Israel and the house of Juda. 27 O Lord our God thou hast dealt with us after all thy goodness and according to all that great mercy of thine 28 As thou spakest by thy servant Moses in the day when thou didst command him to write thy law before the children of Israel saying 29 * Lev. 26.14 Deu. 28.15 If ye will not hear my voice surely †Gr. this great sâ—arm this very great multitude shall be turned into a small number among the nations where I will scatter them 30 For I knew that they would not hear me because it is a stiff-necked people but in the land of their captivities they shall ‖ Or come to themselves remember themselves 31 And shall know that I am the Lord their God for I will give them an heart and ears to hear 32 And they shall praise me in the land of their captivity and think upon my name 33 And return from their stiff †Gr. back neck and from their wicked deeds for they shall remember the way of their fathers which finned before the Lord. 34 And I will bring them again into the land which I promised with an oath unto their fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and they shall be lords of it and I will increase them and they shall not be diminished 35 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God and they shall be my people and I will no more drive my people of Israel out of the land that I have given them CHAP. III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2â— 12 20. Who hath found out her place or who hath come into her treasures 16 Where are the princes of the heathen become and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth 17 They that had their pastime with the fouls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold wherein men trust and made no end of their getting 18 For they that wrought in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable 19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their steads 20 Young men have seen light and dwelt upon the earth but the way of knowledge have they not known 21 Nor understood the paths thereof nor laid hold of it their children were far off from that way 22 It hath not been heard of in Chanaan neither hath it been seen in Theman 23 The
named Joseph who also himself was Jesus disciple 58 He went to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered 59 And when Joseph had taken the body he wrapped it in a clean linen colth 60 And laid it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out in the rock he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre departed 61 And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre 62 ¶ Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate 63 Saying Sir we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive After three days I will rise again 64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day lest his disciples come by night and steal him away and say unto the people He is risen from the dead so the last errour shall be worse then the first 65 Pilate said unto them Ye have a watch go your way make it as sure as you can 66 So they went and made the sepulchre sure sealing the stone and setting a watch CHAP. XXVIII 1 Christs resurrection is declared by an angel to the women 9 He himself appeareth unto them 11 The high priests give the souldiers money to say that he was stolen out of his sepulchre 16 Christ appeareth to his disciples 19 and sendeth them to baptize and teach all nations IN the * Mark 16.1 Joh. 20.1 end of the sabbath as it began to dawn towards the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre 2 And behold there ‖ Or had been was a great earthquake for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it 3 His countenance was like lightning his raiment white as snow 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake became as dead men 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women Fear not ye for I know that ye seek Jesus which was crucified 6 He is not here for he is risen as he said come see the place where the Lord lay 7 And go quickly tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead and behold he goeth before you into Galilee there shall ye see him lo I have told you 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy and did run to bring his disciples word 9 ¶ And as they went to tell his disciples behold Jesus met them saying All hail And they came and held him by the feet and worshipped him 10 Then said Jesus unto them Be not afraid go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee and there shall they see me 11 ¶ Now when they were going behold some of the watch came into the city and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done 12 And when they were assembled with the elders and had taken counsel they gave large money unto the souldiers 13 Saying Say ye His disciples came by night and stole him away while we slept 14 And if this come to the governours ears we will perswade him and secure you 15 So they took the money and did as they were taught and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day 16 ¶ Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them 17 And when they saw him they worshipped him but some doubted 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them saying All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth 19 ¶ * Mark 16.15 Go ye therefore and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy Ghost 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you and lo I am with you alway even unto the end of the world Amen ¶ The Gospel according to S. I. 1 The office of John the Baptist 9 Jesus is baptized 12 tempted 14 he preacheth 16 calleth Peter Andrew James and John 23 healeth one that had a devil 29 Peters mother in law 32 many diseased persons 41 and cleanseth the leper THe beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God 2 As it is written in the prophets * Mat. 3.1 Behold I send my messenger before thy face which shall preprae thy way before thee 3 * Isa 40.3 Luke 3.4 Joh. 1.23 The voice of one crying in the wilderness Prepare ye the way of the Lord make his paths straight 4 * Mat. 3.1 John did baptize in the wilderness and preach the baptism of repentance ‖ Or unto for the remission of sins 5 * Matt. 3.5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judea and they of Jerusalem and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan confessing their sins 6 And John was * Mat. 3.4 clothed with camels hair and with a girdle of a skin about his loyns and he did eat locusts and wilde honey 7 And preached saying There cometh one mightier then I after me the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down unloose 8 I indeed have baptized you with water but he shall baptize you with the holy Ghost 9 * Matth. 3.13 And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized of John in Jordan 10 And straightway coming up out of the water he saw the heavens ‖ Or eleven or rent opened and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him 11 And there came a voice from heaven saying Thou art my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased 12 * Matth. 4.1 And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness 13 And he was there in the wilderness fourty days tempted of Satan and was with wilde beasts and the angels ministred unto him 14 Now after that John was put in prison * Matth. 4.12 Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God 15 And saying The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand repent ye and beleeve the gospel 16 * Matth. 4.18 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea for they were fishers 17 And Jesus said unto them Come ye after me and I will make you to become fishers of men 18 And straightway they forsook their nets and followed him 19 And when he had gone a little further thence he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother who also were in the ship mending their nets 20 And straightway he called them and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants and went after him 21 * Matth. 4.13 And they went into Capernaum and straightway on the sabbath-day he
entred into the synagogue and taught 22 * Matth. 7.28 And they were astonished at his doctrine for he taught them as one that had authority and not as the scribes 23 * Luk. 4.33 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit and he cried out 24 Saying Let us alone what have we to do with thee thou Jesus of Nazareth art thou come to destroy us I know thee who thou art the holy one of God 25 And Jesus rebuked him saying Hold thy peace come out of him 26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him and cried with a loud voice he came out of him 27 And they were all amazed insomuch that they questioned among themselves saying What thing is this what new doctrine is this for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits and they do obey him 28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee 29 * Matth. 8.14 And forthwith when they were come out of the synagogue they entred into the house of Simon and Andrew with James John 30 But Simons wives mother lay sick of a fever and anon they tell him of her 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lift her up and immediately the fever left her and she ministred unto them 32 And at even when the sun did set they brought unto him all that were diseased and them that were possessed with devils 33 And all the city was gathered together at the door 34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases and cast out many devils and suffered not the devils ‖ Or to say that they knew him to speak because they knew him 35 And in the morning rising up a great while before day he went out and departed into a solitary place and there prayed 36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him 37 And when they had found him they said unto him All men seek for thee 38 And he said unto them Let us go into the next towns that I may preach there also for therefore came I forth 39 And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and cast out devils 40 * Matt. 8.2 And there came a leper to him beseeching him and kneeling down to him and saying unto him If thou wilt thou canst make me clean 41 And Jesus moved with compassion put forth his hand and touched him and saith unto him I will be thou clean 42 And assoon as he had spoken immediately the leprosie departed from him and he was cleansed 43 And hestraitly charged him and forthwith sent him away 44 And saith unto him See thou say nothing to any man but go thy way shew thyself to the priest and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded for a testimony unto them 45 * Luk. 5.15 But he went out and began to publish it much and to blaze abroad the matter insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city but was without in desert places and they came to him from every quarter CHAP. II. 1 Christ healeth one sick of the palsie 14 calleth Matthew from the receit of custom 15 cateth with publicans and sinners 18 excuseth his disciples for not fasting 23 and for plucking the ears of corn on the sabbath-day ANd again * Matth. 9.1 he entred into Capernaum after some days and it was noised that he was in the house 2 And straightway many were gathered together insomuch that there was no room to receive them no not so much as about the door and he preached the word unto them 3 And they come unto him bringing one sick of the palsie which was born of four 4 And then they could not come nigh unto him for preass they uncovered the roof where he was and when they had broken it up they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsie lay 5 When Jesus saw their faith he said unto the sick of the palsie Son thy sins be forgiven thee 6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there and reasoning in their hearts 7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies * Job 14.4 Psa 43.25 who can forgive sins but God onely 8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves he said unto them Why reason ye these things in your hearts 9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsie Thy sins be forgiven thee or to say Arise and take up thy bed and walk 10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins he saith to the sick of the palsie 11 I say unto thee Arise and take up thy bed and go thy way into thine house 12 And immediately he arose took up the bed and went forth before them all insomuch that they were all amazed and glorified God saying We never saw it on this fashion 13 And he went forth again by the sea-side and all the multitude resorted unto him and he taught them 14 * Matth. 9.9 And as he passed by he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting ‖ Or at the place where the custom was received at the receit of custom and said unto him Follow me And he arose and followed him 15 And it came to pass that as Jesus sat at meat in his house many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples for there were many and they followed him 16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners they said unto his disciples How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners 17 When Jesus heard it he saith unto them They that are whole have no need of the physician but they that are sick I came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance 18 * Matth. 9.14 Luke 5.33 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast and they come and say unto him Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast but thy disciples fast not 19 And Jesus said unto them Can the children of the bride-chamber fast while the bridegroom is with them as long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them and then shall they fast in those days 21 No man also seweth a piece of ‖ Or raw or unwrou 〈◊〉 new cloth on an old garment else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old and the rent is made worse 22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles else the new wine doth burst the bottles and the wine is spilled and the bottles will be marred but new wine must be put into new bottles 23 * Matth. 12.1 And it came to pass that he went through the corn-fields on the sabbath-day and his disciples began as
they went to pluck the ears of corn 24 And the Pharisees said unto him Behold why do they on the sabbath-day that which is not lawful 25 And he said unto them Have ye never read what David did when he had need and was an hungred he and they that were with him 26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest and did eat the shew-bread which is not lawful to eat but for the priests and gave also to them which were with him 27 And he said unto them The sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath 28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath CHAP. III. 1 Christ healeth the withered hand to and many other infirmities 11 rebuketh the unclean spirits 13 chooseth his twelve apostles 22 couvinceth the blasphemy of casting out devils by Beelzebub 31 and sheweth who are his brother sister and mother ANd * Matth. 12.9 he entred again into the synagogue and there was a man there which had a withered hand 2 And they watched him whether he would heal him on the sabbath-day that they might accuse him 3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand Stand forth 4 And he saith unto them Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath-days or to do evil to save life or to kill but they held their peace 5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger being grieved for the ‖ Or blindness hardness of their hearts he saith unto the man Stretch forth thine hand And he stretched it out and his hand was restored whole as the other 6 And the Pharisees went forth and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him how they might destroy him 7 But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea and a great multitude from Galilee followed him and from Judea 8 And from Jerusalem and from Idumea and from beyond Jordan and they about Tyre and Sidon a great multitude when they had heard what great things he did came unto him 9 And he spake to his disciples that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude lest they should throng him 10 For he had healed many insomuch that they ‖ Or rushed preassed upon him for to touch him as many as had plagues 11 And unclean spirits when they saw him fell down before him and cried saying Thou art the Son of God 12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known 13 * Matth. 10.1 And he goeth up into a mountain and calleth unto him whom he would and they came unto him 14 And he ordained twelve that they should be with him and that he might send them forth to preach 15 And to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out devils 16 And Simon he surnamed Peter 17 And James the son of Zebedee John the brother of James and he surnamed them Boanerges which is The sons of thunder 18 And Andrew and Philip and Bartholomew and Matthew and Thomas and James the son of Alpheus and Thaddeus and Simon the Canaanite 19 And Judas Iscariot which also betrayed him and they went ‖ Or â—eâ—â— into an house 20 And the multitude cometh together again so that they could not so much as eat bread 21 And when his ‖ Or kinsmen friends heards of it they went out to lay hold on him for they said He is beside himself 22 ¶ And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said * Matth. 9.34 He hath Beelzebub and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils 23 And he called them unto him and said unto them in parables How can Satan cast out Satan 24 And if a kingdom be divided against it self that kingdom cannot stand 25 And if a house be divided against itself that house cannot stand 26 And if Satan rise up against himself and be divided he cannot stand but hath an end 27 No man can enter into a strong mans house and spoil his goods except he will first binde the strong man and then he will spoil his house 28 * Matth. 12 31. Verily I say unto you All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme 29 But he that shall blaspheme against the holy Ghost hath never forgiveness but is in danger of eternal damnation 30 Because they said He hath an unclean spirit 31 ¶ * Matth. 12.46 There came then his brethren and his mother and standing without sent unto him calling him 32 And the multitude sat about him and they said unto him Behold thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee 33 And he answered them saying Who is my mother or my brethren 34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him and said Behold my mother and my brethren 35 For whosoever shall do the will of God the same is my brother and my sister and mother CHAP. IV. 1 Thâ— parable of the sower 14 and the meaning thereof 21 We must communicate the light of our knowledge to others 26 The parable of the seed growing secretly 30 and of the mustardâ—sied 35 Christ stilleth the tempest on the sea ANd * Matth. 13.1 he began again to teach by the sea-side and there was gathered unto him a great multitude so that he entred into a ship and sat in the sea and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land 2 And he taught them many things by parables and said unto them in his doctrine 3 Hearken Behold there went out a sower to sowe 4 And it came to pass as he sowed some fell by the way-side and the â—owls of the air came and devoured it up 5 And some fell on stony ground where it had not much earth and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth or earth 6 But when the sun was up it was scorched and because it had no root it withered away 7 And some fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it and it yeelded no fruit 8 And other fell on good ground and did yeeld fruit that sprang up and increased and brought forth some thirty and some sixty and some on hundred 9 And he said unto them He that hath ears to hear let him hear 10 And when he was alone they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable 11 And he said unto them unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God but unto them that are without all these things are done in parables 12 * Matth. 13 14. That seeing they may see and not perceive and hearing they may hear and not understand lest at any time they should be converted and their sins should be forgiven them 13 And he said unto them Know ye not this parable and how then will you know all parables 14 ¶ The sower soweth the word
to rebuke him 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples he rebuked Peter saying Get thee behinde me Satan for thou savourest not the things that be of God but the things that be of men 34 ¶ And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also he said unto them * Mat. 30 3◠Whosoever will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospels the same shall save it 36 For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul 38 * Mat. ◠33 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels CHAP. IX 2 Jesus is transfigured 11 He instructeth his disciples concerning the coming of Elias 14 casteth forth a dumb and deaf spirit 30 foretelleth his death and resurrection 33 exhorteth his disciples to humility 38 bidding them not to prohibit such as be not against them nor to give offence to any of the faithful ANd he said unto them * Mat. 16.28 Verily I say unto you that there be some of them that stand here which shall not taste of death till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power 2 ¶ * Mat. 27.1 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter and James and John and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves and he was transfigured before them 3 And his raiment became shining exceeding white as snow so as no fuller on earth can white them 4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses and they were talking with Jesus 5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus Master it is good for us to be here and let us make three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias 6 For he wist not what to say for they were sore afraid 7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them and a voice came out of the cloud saying This is my beloved Son hear him 8 And suddenly when they had looked round about they saw no man any more save Jesus onely with themselves 9 And as they came down from the mountain he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen till the Son of man were risen from the dead 10 And they kept that saying with themselves questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean 11 ¶ And they asked him saying Why say the scribes that Elias must first come 12 And he answered and told them Elias verily cometh first and restoreth all things and * Isa 53.24 how it is written of the Son of man that he must suffer many things and be set at nought 13 But I say unto you that Elias is indeed come and they have done unto him whatsoever they lifted as it is written of him 14 ¶ * Mat. 17.14 And when he came to his disciples he saw a great multitude about them and the scribes questioning with them 15 And straightway all the people when they beheld him were greatly amazed and running to him saluted him 16 And he asked the scribes What question ye ‖ Or among your selves with them 17 And one of the multitude answered and said Master I have brought unto thee my son which hath a dumb spirit 18 And wheresoever he taketh him he ‖ Or dasheth him teareth him and he fometh and gnasheth with his teeth and pineth away and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out and they could not 19 He answered him and saith O faithless generation how long shall I be with you how long shall I suffer you bring him unto me 20 And they brought him unto him and when he saw him straightway the spirit tare him he fell on the ground and wallowed foming 21 And he asked his father How long is it ago since this came unto him And he said Of a childe 22 And oft-times it hath cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him but if thou canst do any thing have compassion on us and help us 23 Jesus said unto him If thou canst beleeve all things are possible to him that beleeveth 24 And straightway the father of the childe cried out and said with tears Lord I beleeve help thou mine unbelief 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together he rebuked the foul spirit saying unto him Thou dumb and deaf spirit I charge thee Come out of him and enter no more into him 26 And the spirit cried and rent him sore and came out of him and he was as one dead insomuch that many said He is dead 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up and he arose 28 And when he was come into the house his disciples asked him privately Why could not we cast him out 29 And he said unto them This kinde can come forth by nothing but by prayer and lasting 30 ¶ * Mat. 17.22 And they departed thence and passed through Galilee and he would not that any man should know it 31 For he taught his disciples and said unto them The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men and they shall kill him and after that he is killed he shall rise the third day 32 But they understood not that saying and were afraid to ask him 33 ¶ * Mat. 18.1 And he came to Capernaum and being in the house he asked them What was it that ye disputed among your selves by the way 34 But they held their peace for by the way they had disputed among themselves who should be the greatest 35 And he sat down and called the twelve and saith unto them If any man desire to be first the same shall be last of all servant of all 36 And he took a childe and set him in the midst of them and when he had taken him in his arms he said unto them 37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name receiveth me and whosoever shall receive me receiveth not me but him that sent-me 38 ¶ * Luk. 9.49 And John answered him saying Master we saw one casting out devils in thy name and he followeth not us and we forbad him because he followeth not us 39 But Jesus said Forbid him not * 1 Cor. 12.3 for there is no man which shall do a nuracle in my name that can lightly speak evil of me 40 For he that is not against us is on our part 41 * Mat. 10.42 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name because ye belong to Christ verily
and ministred unto him many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem 42 ¶ * Mat. 27 5â— And now when the even was come because it was the preparation that is the day before the sabbath 43 Joseph of Arimathea an honourable counsellour which also waited for the kingdom of God came and went in boldly unto Pilate and craved the body of Jesus 44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead and calling unto him the centurion he asked him whether he had been any while dead 45 And when he knew it of the centurion he gave the body to Joseph 46 And he bought fine linen and took him down and wrapped him in the linen and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid CHAP. full of the holy Ghost retumed from Jordan and was led by the spirit into the wilderness 2 Being fourty days tempted of the devil and in those days he did eat nothing and when they were ended he XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteoâ—â— 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. V. 1 The incestuous person 6 is cause rather of shame unto them then of rejoycing 7 The old leaven is to be purged out 10 Hainous offenders are to be shunned and avoided IT is reported commonly that there is fornication among you and such fornication as is not so much as named amongst the Gentiles that one should have his fathers wife 2 And ye are puffed up and have not rather mourned that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you 3 * Col. 2.5 For I verily as absent in body but present in spirit have ‖ Or determined judged already as though I were present concerning him that that hath so done this deed 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ when ye are gathered together and my spirit with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ 5 * 1 Tim. 1.10 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus 6 Your glorying is not good Know ye not that * Gal. 5.9 a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump 7 Purge out therefore the old leaven that ye may be a new lump as ye are unleavened For even Christ our pass-over ‖ Or is slain is sacrificed for us 8 Therefore let us keep ‖ Or holy-day the feast not with old leaven neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth 9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicatours 10 Yet not altogether with the fornicatours of this world or with the covetous or extortioners or with idolaters for then must ye needs go out of the world 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company if any man that is called a brother be a fornicatour or covetous or an idolater or a railer or a drunkard or an extortioner with such an one no not to eat 12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without do not ye judge them that are within 13 But them that are without God judgeth Therefore put away from among your selves that wicked person CHAP. VI. 1 The Corinthians must not vex their brethren in going to law with them 6 especially under infidels 9 The unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God 15 Our bodies are the members of Christ 19 and temples of the holy Ghost 16 17 they must not therefore be defiled DAre any of you having a matter against another go to law before the unjust and not before the saints 2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world if the world shall be judged by you are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters 3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels how much more things that pertain to this life 4 If then ye have judgements of things pertaining to this life set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church 5 I speak to your shame Is it so that there is not a wise man amongst you no not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren 6 But brother goeth to law with brother and that before the unbeleevers 7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you because ye go to law one with another * Mat. 6.39 Luke 6 2◠Rom. 12.19 why do ye not rather take wrong why do ye not rather suffer your selves to be defrauded 8 Nay you do wrong and defraud and that your brethren 9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God Be not deceived neither fornicatours nor idolaters nor adulterers nor effeminate nor abusers of themselves with mankinde 10 Nor theeves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God 11 And such were * Tit. 3.3 some of you but ye are washed but ye are sanctified but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God 12 * Chap. 20.23 All things are lawful unto me but all things are not ‖ Or profitable expedient all things are lawful for me but I will not be brought under the power of any 13 Meats for the belly and the belly for meats but God shall destroy both it and them Now the body is not for fornication but for the Lord and the Lord for the body 14 And God hath both raised up the Lord and will also raise up us by his own power 15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot God forbid 16 What know ye not that he which is joyned to an harlot is one body for * Gen. 2.24 Matth. 19.5 Eph. 5.31 two saith he shall be one flesh 17 But he that is joyned unto the Lord is one spirit 18 Flee fornication Every sin that a man doeth is without the body but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body 19 What * Chap. 3.16 know ye not that your body is the temple of the holy Ghost which is in you which ye have of God and ye are not your own 20 For * Chap. 7.33 ye are bought with a price therefore glorifie God in your body and in your spirit which are Gods CHAP. VII 2 He treateth of marriage 4 shewing it to be a remedy against fornication 10 and that the bond thereof ought not lightly to be dissolved 18 20 Every man must be content with his vocation 25 Virginity wherefore to be embraced 35 And for what respects we may either marry or abstain from marrying NOw concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me It is good for a man not to touch a woman 2 Nevertheless to avoid fornication let every man have his own wife and let every woman have her own husband 3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence and likewise also the wife unto the husband 4 The wife hath not power of her own body but the husband and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body but the wife 5 Defraud you not one the other except it be with consent for a time that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer and come together again that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency 6 But I speak this by permission and not of commandment 7 For I would that all men were even as I my self but every man hath his proper gift of God one after this manner another after that 8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows It is good for them if they abide even as I. 9 But if they cannot contain let them marry for it is better to marry then to burn 10
And unto the married I command yet not I but the Lord * Matth. 9.32 19.9 Mark 10.11 Luke 16.18 Let not the wife depart from her husband 11 But and if she depart let her remain unmarried or he reconciled to her husband and let not the husband put away his wife 12 But to the rest speak I not the Lord If any brother hath a wife that beleeveth not and she be pleased to dwell with him let him not put her away 13 And the woman which hath an husband that beleeveth not and if he be pleased to dwell with her let her not leave him 14 For the unbeleeving husband is sanctified by the wife and the unbeleeving wife is sanctified by the husband else were your children unclean but now are they holy 15 But if the unbeleeving depart let him depart A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases but God hath called us †Gr. in peace to peace 16 For what knowest thou O wife whether thou shalt save thy husband or how knowest thou O man whether thou shalt save thy wife 17 But as God hath distributed to every man as the Lord hath called every one so let him walk and so ordain I in all churches 18 Is any man called being circumcised let him not become uncircumcised is any called in uncircumcision let him not become circumcised 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God 20 Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called 21 Art thou called being a servant care not for it but if thou mayest be made free use it rather 22 For he that is called in the Lord being a servant is the Lords †Gr. made free free-man likewise also lie that is called being free is Christs servant 23 * Chap. 6.20 Ye are bought with a price be not ye the servants of men 24 Brethren let every man wherein he is called therein abide with God 25 Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord yet I give my judgement as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful 26 I suppose therefore that this is good for the present ‖ Or necessity distress I say that it is good for a man so to be 27 Art thou bound unto a wife seek not to be loosed Art thou loosed from a wife seek not a wife 28 But and if thou marry thou hast not sinned and if a virgin marry she hath not sinned nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh but I spare you 29 But this I say brethren the time is short It remaineth that both they that have wives be as though they had none 30 And they that weep as though they wept not and they that rejoyce as though they rejoyced not and they that buy as though they possessed not 31 And they that use this world as not abusing it for the fashion of this world passeth away 32 But I would have you without carefulness He that is unmarried careth for the things the belong to the Lord how he may please the Lord 33 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world how he may please his wife 34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord that she may be holy both in body and in spirit but she that is married careth for the things of the world how she may please her husband 35 And this I speak for your own profit not that I may cast a snare upon you but for that which is comely and that you may attend upon the Lord without distraction 36 But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin if she pass the flower of her age and need so require let him do what he will he sinneth not let them marry 37 Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart having no necessity but hath power over his own will and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin doeth well 38 So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better 39 * Rom. ◠2 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth but if her husband be dead she is at liberty to be married to whom she will onely in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she so abide after my judgement and I think also that I have the Spirit of God CHAP. VIII 1 To abstain from meats offered to idols 8 9 We must not abuse our Christian liberty to the offence of our brethren 11 but must bridle our knowledge with charity NOw as touching things offered unto idols we know that we all have knowledge Knowledge puffeth up but charity edifieth 2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know 3 But if any man love God the same is known of him 4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols we know that * Chap. 10.19 an idol is nothing in the world and that there is none other God but one 5 For though there be that are called gods whether in heaven or in earth as there be gods many and lords many 6 But to us there is but one God the Father of whom are all things and we ‖ Or for him Rom. 11.36 in him and one Lord Jesus Christ by whom are all things and we by him 7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol and their conscience being weak is defiled 8 But meat commendeth us not to God for neither if we eat ‖ Or have we the more are we the better neither if we eat not ‖ Or have we the less are we the worse 9 But take heed lest by any means this ‖ Or power liberty of yours become a stumbling-block to them that are weak 10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idols temple shall not the conscience of him that is weak be †Gr edified emboldned to eat those things which are offered to idols 11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish for whom Christ died 12 But when ye sin so against the brethren and wound their weak conscience ye sin against Christ 13 Wherefore * Rom. 14.21 if meat make my brother to offend I will eat no flesh while the world standeth lest I make my brother to offend CHAP. IX 1 He sheweth his liberty 7 and that the minister ought to live by the gospel 15 yet that himself hath of his own accord abstained 18 to be either chargeable unto them 22 or offensive unto any in matters indifferent 14 Our life is like unto
have you ignorant 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led 3 Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus ‖ Or anathema accursed and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the holy Ghost 4 Now * Rom. 12.4 c. there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit 5 And there are differences of administrations but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations but it is the same God which worketh all in all 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit 9 To another faith by the same Spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit 10 To another the working of miracles to another prophesie to another discerning of spirits to another divers kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues 11 But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit dividing to every man severally as he will 12 For as the body is one and hath many members and all the members of that one body being many are one body so also is Christ 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body whether we be Jews or †Gr. Greeks Gentiles whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one Spirit 14 For the body is not one member but many 15 If the foot shall say Because I am not the hand I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 16 And if the ear shall say Because I am not the eye I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 17 If the whole body were an eye where were the hearing if the whole were hearing where were the smelling 18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him 19 And if they were all one member where were the body 20 But now are they many members yet but one body 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand I have no need of thee nor again the head to the feet I have no need of you 22 Nay much more those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honourable upon these we ‖ Or put on bestow more abundant honour and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness 24 For our comely parts have no need but God hath tempered the body together having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked 25 That there should be no ‖ Or division schism in the body but that the members should have the same care one for another 26 And whether one member suffer all the members suffer with it or one member be honoured all the members rejoyce with it 27 Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular 28 And * Eph. 4.11 God hath set some in the church first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healings helps governments ‖ Or kinds diversities of tongues 29 Are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers are all ‖ Or powers workers of miracles 30 Have all the gifts of healing do all speak with tongues do all interpret 31 But covet earnestly the best gifts And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way CHAP. XIII 1 All gifts 2 3 how excellent soever are nothing worth without charity 4 The praises thereof and 13 prelation before hope and faith THough I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal 2 And though I have the gift of prophesie and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have no charity I am nothing 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned have not charity it profiteth me nothing 4 Charity suffereth long and is kinde charity envieth not charity ‖ Or is not rash vaunteth not itself is not puffed up 5 Doth not behave it self unseemly seeketh not her own is not easily provoked thinketh no evil 6 Rejoyceth not in iniquity but rejoyceth ‖ Or with the truth in the truth 7 Beareth all things beleeveth all things hopeth all things endureth all things 8 Charity never faileth but whether there be prophesies they shall fail whether there be tongues they shall cease whether there be knowledge it shall vanish away 9 For we know in part and we prophesie in part 10 But when that which is perfect is come then that which is in part shall be done away 11 When I was a childe I spake as a childe I understood as a childe I ‖ Or reasoned thought as a childe but when I became a man I put away childish things 12 For now we see through a glass †Gr. in a riddle darkly but then face to face now I know in part but then shall I know even as also I am known 13 And now abideth faith hope charity these three but the greatest of these is charity CHAP. XIV 1 Prophesie is commended 2 3 4 and preferred before speaking with tongues 6 by a comparison drawn from musical instruments 12 Both must be referred to edification 22 as to their true and proper end 26 The true use of each is taught 29 and the abuse taxed 34 Women are forbidden to speak in the church FOllow after charity and desire spiritual gifts but rather that ye may prophesie 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God for no man †Gr. beareth understandeth him howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation and comfort 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself but he that prophesieth edifieth the church 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth then he that speaketh with tongues except he interpret that the church may receive edifying 6 Now brethren if I come unto you speaking with tongues what shall I profit you except I shall speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophesying or by doctrine 7 And even things without life giving sound whether pipe or harp except they give a distinction in the ‖ Or a tunes sounds how shall it be known what is piped or harped 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself to the battel 9 So likewise you except ye utter by the tongue words †Gr. significant easie to be understood how shall

II. 1 By comparing what we were by 3 nature with what we are 5 by grace 10 he declareth that we are made for good works and 13 being brought near by Christ should not live as 1â— Gentiles and 12 foreiners in time past but as 19 citizens with the saints and the family of God ANd * Col. 2.13 you hath be quickned who were dead in trespasses and sins 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world according to the prince of the power of the air the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling †Gr. the wills the desires of the flesh and of the minde and were by nature the children of wrath even as others 4 But God who is rich in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved us 5 Even when we were dead in sins hath quickened us together with Christ by grace ye are saved 6 And hath raised as up together and made as sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of your selves it is the gift of God 9 Not of works lest any man should boast 10 For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ‖ Or prepared ordained that we should walk in them 11 Wherefore remember that ye being in time passed Gentiles in the flesh who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands 12 That at that time ye were without Christ being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise having no hope and without God in the world 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the bloud of Christ 14 For he is our peace who hath made both one and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in ordinances for to make in himself of twain one new man so making peace 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity ‖ Or in himself thereby 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off and to to them that were nigh 18 For * Rom. 5.2 through him we both have an access by one
Spirit unto the Father 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the saints and of the houshold of God 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord 22 In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit CHAP. III. 5 The hidden mystery 6 that the Gentiles should be saved 3 was made known to Paul by revelation 8 and to him was that grace given that 〈◊〉 he should preach it 13 He desireth them not to faint for his tribulation 14 and prayeth 19 that they may perceive the great love of Christ toward them FOr this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery as I wrote ‖ Or a little before afore in few words 4 Whereby when ye read ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit 6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel 7 Whereof I was made a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power 8 Unto me who am less then the least of all saints is this grace given that * Gal. 1.16 I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God who created all things by Jesus Christ 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him 13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you which is your glory 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named 16 That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthned with might by his Spirit in the inner man 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height 19 And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end Amen CHAP. V. 2 After general exhortations to love 3 to flee fornication 4 and all uncleanness 7 not to converse with the wicked 15 to walk warily and to be 18 filled with the Spirit 22 he descendeth to the particular duties how wives ought to obey their husbands 25 and husbands ought to love their wives 32 even as Christ doth his church BE ye therefore followers of God a dear children 2 And * Joh. 13.24 15.12 walk in love as Christ also hath loved us and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour 3 But * Col. 3.5 1 Thes 4.3 c. fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness let it not be once named amongst you as be cometh saints 4 Neither filthiness nor foolish talking nor jesting which are not convenient but rather giving of thanks 5 For this ye know that no whoremonger nor unclean person nor covetous man who is an idolater hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of ‖ Or unbelief disobedience 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them 8 For ye were sometimes darkness but now are ye light in the Lord walk as children of light 9 For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather reprove them 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret 13 But all things that are ‖ Or discovered reproved are made manifest by the light for whatsoever doth make manifest is light 14 Wherefore he saith * Isa 60.1 Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead and Christ shall give thee light 15 * Col. 4.5 See then that ye walk circumspectly not as fools but as wise 16 Redeeming the time because the days are evil 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is 18 And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess but be filled with the Spirit 19 Speaking to your selves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ 21 Submitting your selves one to another in the fear of God 22 * Col. 3.18 Tit. 2.5 1 Pet. 3.1 Wives submit your selves unto your own husbands as unto the Lord. 23 For * 1 Cor. 11.3 the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church and he is the Saviour of the body 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing 25 * Col. 3.19 Husbands love your wives even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it 26 That he might sanctifie and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should be holy and without blemish 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies he that loveth his wife loveth himself 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh but nourisheth and cherisheth it even as the Lord the church 30 For we are members of his body of his flesh and of his bones 31 * Gen 2.24 Mat. 19.5 Mar. 10.7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joyned unto his wife and they * 1 Cor. 6.16 two shall be one flesh 32 This is a great mystery but I speak concerning Christ the church 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself and the wife see that she reverence her husband CHAP. VI. 1 The duty of children to ward their parents 5 of servants toward their masters 10 Our life is a warfare 12 not onely against flesh and bloud but also spiritual enemies 13 The complete armour of a Christian 18 and how it ought to be used 21 Tychicus is commended * Col. 3.10 CHildren obey your parents in the Lord for this is right 2 * Ex. 20.12 Deu. 5.16 Ecclus. 3.8 Mat. 15.4 Mar. 7.10 Honour thy father and mother which is the first commandment with promise 3 That it may be well with thee and thou mayest live long on the earth 4 And * Col. 3.21 ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. 5 * Col. 3.22 Tit. 2.9 1 Pet. 2.18 Servants be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh with fear and trembing in singleness of your heart as unto Christ 6 Not with eye-service as men-pleasers but as the servants of Christ doing the will of God from the heart 7 With good will doing service as to the Lord and not to men 8 Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth the same shall he receive of the Lord whether he be bond or free 9 And ye masters do the same things unto them ‖ Or moderating forbearing threatning knowing that ‖ Some read both your and their master your master also is in heaven * Wisd 6.7 Ecclus 35.12 Rom. 2.11 neither is there respect of persons with him 10 Finally my brethren be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might 11 Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and bloud but against principalities against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this world against ‖ Or wicked spirits spiritual wickedness in ‖ Or heavenly high places 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day and ‖ Or having overcome all having done all to stand 14 Stand
for a short time in presence not in heart endeavoured the more and abundantly to see your face with great desire 18 Wherefore we would have come unto you even I Paul once and again but Satan hindred as 19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of ‖ Or glorying rejoycing are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming 20 For ye are our glory and joy CHAP. III. 1 S. Paul testifieth his great love to the Thessalonians partly by sending Timothy unto them to strengthen and comfort them partly by rejoycing in their well doing 10 and partly by praying for them and desiring a safe coming unto them WHerefore when we could no longer forbear we thought it good to be left at Athens alone 2 And sent Timotheus our brother and minister of God and our fellow-labourer in the gospel of Christ to establish you and to comfort you concerning your faith 3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions for your selves know that we are appointed thereunto 4 For verily when we were with you we told you before that we should suffer tribulation even as it came to pass and ye know 5 For this cause when I could no longer forbear I sent to know your faith lest by some means the tempter have tempted you and our labour be in vain 6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity and that ye have good remembrance of us always desiring greatly to see us as we also to see you 7 Therefore brethren we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith 8 For now we live if ye stand fast in the Lord. 9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God 10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith 11 Now God himself and our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ ‖ Or guide direct our way unto you 12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one towards another and towards all men even as we do towards you 13 To the end he may * 1 Cor. 1.8 Ch. â— 23 stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God even our Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints CHAP. IV. He exhorteth them to go on forward in all manner of godliness 6 to live holily and justly 9 to love one another 11 and quâ—etly to follow their own business 13 and last of all to sorrow moâ—erately for the dead 17 And unto this last exhortation is annexed a brief description of the resurrection and second coming of Christ to judgement FUrthermore then we ‖ Or request exhort you by the Lord Jesus that as ye have received of us how you ought to walk and to please God so ye would abound more and more 2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus 3 For this is the will of God even your sanctification that ye should abstain from fornication 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence even as the Gentiles which know not God 6 That no man go beyond and ‖ Or oppress or over-reath defraud his brother ‖ Or in the matter in any matter because that the Lord is the avenger of all such as we also have forewarned you and testified 7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness but unto holiness 8 He therefore that ‖ Or rejecteth despiseth despiseth not man but God who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit 9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you for ye your selves are * Joh. 13.34 15.12 taught of God to love one another 10 And indeed ye do it towards all the brethren which are in all Macedonia but we beseech you brethren that ye increase more more 11 And that ye study to be quiet and to do your own business and to work with your own hands as we commanded you 12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without and that ye may have lack ‖ Or of no man of nothing 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant brethren concerning them which are asleep that ye sorrow not even as others which have no hope 14 For if we beleeve that Jesus died and rose again even so * 1 Cor. 15.23 them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout with the voice of the archangel and with * 1 Cor. 15.52 the trump of God and the dead in Christ shall rise first 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore ‖ Or exhort comfort one another with these words CHAP. V. 1 He proceedeth in the former description of Christs coming to judgement 16 and giveth divers precepts 23 and so concludeth the epistle BUt of the times and the seasons brethren ye have no need that I write unto you 2 For your selves know perfectly that * Mat. 24.43 44. 2 Pet. 3.10 Rev. 3.3 16.15 the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night 3 For when they shall say Peace and safety then sudden destruction cometh upon them as travail upon a woman with childe and they shall not escape 4 But ye brethren are not in darkness that that day should overtake you as a thief 5 Ye are all the children of light and the children of the day we are not of the night nor of darkness 6 Therefore let us not sleep as do others but let us watch be sober 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night and they that be drunken are drunken in the night 8 But let us who are of the day be sober * Is 59.17 Eph. 6.16.17 putting on the breast-plate of faith and love and for an helmet the hope of salvation 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ 10 Who died for us that whether we wake or sleep we should live together with him 11 Wherefore ‖ Or exhort comfort your selves together and edifie one another even as also ye do 12 And we beseech you brethren * Heb. 13 17. to know them which labour among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you 13 And to esteem them very highly in love
devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
not God hath made him a liar because he beleeved not the record that God gave of his Son 11 And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life and this life is in his Son 12 He that hath the Son hath life and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life 13 These things have I written unto you that beleeve on the name of the Son of God that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may beleeve on the name of the Son of God 14 And this is the confidence that we have ‖ Or concerning him in him that * Ch. 3.22 if we ask any thing according to his will he heareth us 15 And if we know that he hear us whatsoever we ask we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death he shall ask and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death * Mat. 12.31 Mar. 3.23 There is a sin unto death I do not say that he shall pray for it 17 All unrighteousness is sin and there is a sin not unto death 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself and that wicked one toucheth him not 19 And we know that we are of God and the whole world lieth in wickedness 20 And we know that the Son of God is come and hath given us an understanding that we may know him that is true and we are in him that is true even in his Son Jesus Christ This is the true God and eternal life 21 Little children keep your selves from idols Amen ¶ The second epistle of S. JOHN He exhorteth a certain honourable matron with her children to persevere in Christian love and belief 8 lest they lose the reward of their former profession 10 and to have nothing to do with those seducers that bring not the true doctrine of Christ Jesus THe elder unto the elect lady and her children whom I love in the truth and not I onely but also all they that have known the truth 2 For the truths sake which dwelleth in us and shall be with us for ever 3 Grace be with you mercy and peace from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ the Son of the Father in truth and love 4 I rejoyced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth as we have received a commandment from the Father 5 And now I beseech thee lady * 1 Joh. 1.7 not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee but that which we had from the beginning that we love one another 6 And this is love that we walk after his commandments This is the commandment that as ye have heard from the beginning ye should walk in it 7 For many deceivers are entred into the world who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh This is a deceiver and an antichrist 8 Look to your selves that we lose not those things which we have ‖ Or gained Some copies read which ye have gained but that ye receive c. wrought but that we receive a full reward 9 Whosoever transgresseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God he that abideth in the doctrine of Christ he hath both the Father and the Son 10 If there come any unto you and bring not this doctrine receive him not into your house neither bid him God speed 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds 12 Having many things to write unto you I would not write with paper and ink but I trust to come unto you and speak †Gr. mouth to mouth face to face that our joy may be full 13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee Amen ¶ The third epistle of S. JOHN He commendeth Gaius for his piety 5 and hospitality 7 to true preachers 9 complaining of the unkinde dealing of ambitious Diotrephes on the contrary side 11 whose evil example is not to be fâ—llowed 12 and giveth special testimony to the good report of Demetrius THe elder unto the welbeloved Gaius whom I love ‖ Or truly in the truth 2 Beloved I ‖ Or pray wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health even as thy soul prospereth 3 For I rejoyced greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee even as thou walkest in the truth 4 I have no greater joy then to hear that my children walk in truth 5 Beloved thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren and to strangers 6 Which have born witness of thy charity before the church whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort thou shalt do well 7 Because that for his names sake they went forth taking nothing of the Gentiles 8 We therefore ought to receive such that we might be fellow-helpers to the truth 9 I wrote unto the church but Diotrephes who loveth to have the preeminence among them receiveth us not 10 Wherefore if I come I will remember his deeds which he doeth prating against us with malicious words and not content therewith neither doth he himself receive the brethren and forbiddeth them that would and casteth them out of the church 11 Beloved follow not that which is evil but that which is good He that doeth good is of God but he that doeth evil hath not seen God 12 Demetrius hath good report of all men and of the truth it self yea and we also bear record and ye know that our record is true 13 I had many things to write but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee 14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee and we shall speak †Gr. mouth to mouth face to face Peace be to thee Our friends salute thee Greet the friends by name ¶ The general epistle of S. JUDE He exhorteth them to be constant in the profession of the faith 14 False teachers are crept in to seduce them for whose damnable doctrine and manners horrible punishment is prepared 20 whereas the godly by the assistance of the holy Spirit and prayers to God may persevere and grow in grace and keep themselves and recover others out of the snares of those deceivers JUde the servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James to them that are sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called 2 Mercy unto you and peace and love be multiplied 3 Beloved when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation it was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares who were before of old ordained to this condemnation ungodly men turning the grace of our God
consult about it 22 and send their determination by letters to the churches 36 Paul and Barnabas thinking to visit the brethren together fall â—t strife and depart asunder ANd certain men which came down from Judea taught the brethren and said * Gal. 5.2 Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses ye cannot be saved 2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissention and disputation with them they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain other of them should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question 3 And being brought on their way by the church they passed through Phenice and Samaria declaring the conversion of the Gentiles and they caused great joy unto all the brethren 4 And when they were come to Jerusalem they were received of the church and of the apostles and elders and they declared all things that God had done with them 5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which beleeved saying That it was needful to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses 6 ¶ And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter 7 And when there had been much disputing Peter rose up and said unto them * Chap. 10. â—0 and 11.13 Men and brethren ye know how that a good while ago God made choise among us that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel and beleeve 8 And God which knoweth the hearts bare them witness giving them the holy Ghost even as he did unto us 9 And put no difference between us and them * Chap. 10.12 1 Cor. 1. â— purifying their hearts by faith 10 Now therefore why tempt ye God * â—â—ld 23.4 to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which niether our fathers nor we were able to bear 11 But we beleeve that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved even as they 12 ¶ Then all the multitude kept silence and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them 13 ¶ And after they had held their peace James answered saying Men and brethren hearken unto me 14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles to take out of them a people for his name 15 And to this agree the words of the prophets as it is written 16 * Amos 9.11 After this I will return and will build again the tabernacle of David which is faln down and I will build again the ruines thereof and I will set it up 17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord and all the Gentiles upon whom my name is called saith the Lord who doeth all these things 18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world 19 Wherefore my sentence is that we trouble not them which from among the Gentiles are turned to God 20 But that we write unto them that they abstain from pollutions of idols and from fornication and from things strangled and from bloud 21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him being read in the synagogues every sabbath-day 22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas namely Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas chief men among the brethren 23 And wrote letters by them after this manner The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia 24 Forasmuch as we have heard that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words subverting your souls saying Ye must be circumcised keep the law to whom we gave no such commandment 25 It seemed good unto us being assembled with one accord to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul 26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas who shall also tell you the same things by mouth 28 For it seemed good to the holy Ghost and to us to lay upon you no greater burden then these necessary things 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols and from bloud and from things strangled and from fornication from which if ye keep your selves ye shall do well Fare ye well 30 So when they were dismissed they came to Antioch and when they had gathered the multitude together they delivered the epistle 31 Which when they had read they rejoyced for the ‖ Or exâ—â—â—tation consolation 32 And Judas and Silas being prophets also themselves exhorted the brethren with many words and confirmed them 33 And alter they had tarried there a space they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles 34 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still 35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch teaching and preaching the word of the Lord with many others also 36 ¶ And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord and see how they do 37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John whose surname was Mark. 38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them who departed from them from Pamphylia and went not with them to the work 39 And the contention was so sharp between them that they departed asunder one from the other and so Barnabas took Mark and sailed unto Cyprus 40 And Paul chose Silas and departed being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God 41 And he went through Syria Cilicia confirming the churches CHAP. XVI 1 Paul having circumcised Timothy 7 and being called by the Spirit from one country to another 14 converteth Lydia 16 casteth out a spirit of divination 19 For which cause he and Silas are whipped and imprisâ—ned 26 The prison-doors are opened 31 The jaylour is convertted 37 and they are delivered THen came he to Derbe and Lystra and behold a certain disciple was there * Rom. 16. â—1 named Timotheus the son of a certain woman which was a Jewess and beleeved but his father was a Greek 2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium 3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters for they knew all that his father was a Greek 4 And as they went through the cities they delivered them the decrees for to keep * Chap. 15. â—â— that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem 5 And so were the churches established in the faith and increased in number daily 6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia were forbidden of the holy Ghost to
preach the word in Asia 7 After they were come to Mysia they assayed to go into Bithynia but the Spirit suffered them not 8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night There stood a man of Macedonia prayed him saying Comeover into Macedonia help us 10 And after he had seen the vision immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them 11 Therefore loosing from Troas we came with a straight course to Samothracia and the next day to Neapolis 12 And from thence to Philippi which is ‖ Or the first the chief city of the part of Macedonia and a colony we were in the city abiding certain days 13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river-side where prayer was wont to be made and we sat down and spake unto the women which resorted thither 14 ¶ And a certain woman named Lydia a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira which worshipped God heard us whose heart the Lord opened that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul 15 And when she was baptized and her houshold she besought us saying If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord come into my house and abide there And she constrained us 16 ¶ And it came to pass as we went to prayer a certain damsel possessed with a spirit ‖ Or of Python of divination met us which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying 17 The same followed Paul and us and cried saying These men are the servants of the most high God which shew unto us the way of salvation 18 And this did she many days But Paul being grieved turned and said to the spirit I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her And he came out the same hour 19 ¶ And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone they caught Paul and Silas and drew them into the ‖ Or court market-place unto the rulers 20 And brought them to the magistrates saying These men being Jews do exceedingly trouble our city 21 And teach customs which are not lawful for us to receive neither to observe being Romans 22 And the multitude rose up together against them and the magistrates rent off their clothes * 2 Cor. 11.25 1 Thes 2.2 and commanded to beat them 23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them they cast them into prison charging the jaylour to keep them safely 24 Who having received such a charge thrust them into the inner prison and made their feet fast in the stocks 25 ¶ And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God and the prisoners heard them 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake so that the foundations of the prison were shaken and immediately all the doors were opened and every ones bands were loosed 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep and seeing the prison-doors open he drew out his sword and would have killed himself supposing that the prisoners had been fled 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice saying Do thy self no harm for we are all here 29 Then he called for a light and sprang in and came trembling and sell down before Paul and Silas 30 And brought them out and said Sire what must I do to be saved 31 And they said Beleeve on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved and thy house 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord and to all that were in his house 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes and was baptized he and all his straightway 34 And when he had brought them into his house he set meat before them and rejoyced beleeving in God with all his house 35 And when it was day the magistrates sent the serjeants saying Let those men go 36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul The magistrates have sent to let you go now therefore depart and go in peace 37 But Paul said unto them They have beaten us openly uncondemned being Romans and have cast us into prison and now do they thrust us out privily nay verily but let them come themselves and fetch us out 38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates and they feared when they heard that they were Romans 39 And they came and besought them and brought them out and desired them to depart out of the city 40 And they went out of the prison * Vers 14. and entred into the house of Lydia and when they had seen the brethren they comforted them and departed CHAP. XVII 1 Paul preacheth at Thessalonica 4 where some beleeve and others perse cute him 10 He is sent to Berea and preacheth there 13 Being persecuted at Thessalonica 15 be cometh to Athens and disputeth and preacheth the living God to them unknown 34 whereby many are converted unto Christ NOw when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia they came to Thessalonica where was a synagogue of the Jews 2 And Paul as his manner was went in unto them and three sabbath-days reasoned with them out of the scriptures 3 Opening and alleding that Christ must needs have suffered and risen again from the dead and that this Jesus whom I preach unto you is Christ 4 And some of them beleeved consorted with Paul and Silas and of the devout Greeks a great multitude of the chief women not a few 5 ¶ But the Jews which beleeved not moved with envy took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort and gathered a company and set all the city on an uproar and assaulted the house of Jason and sought to bring them out to the people 6 And when they found them not they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city crying These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also 7 Whom Jason hath received and these all do contrary to the decrees of Celar saying that there is another king one Jesus 8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city when they heard these things 9 And when they had taken security of Jason and of the other they let them go 10 ¶ And the brethren immediately sent away Paul Silas by night unto Berea who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews 11 These were more noble then those in Thessalonica in that they received the word with all readiness of minde and searched the scriptures daily whether those things were so 12 Therefore many of them beleeved also of honourable women which were Greeks and of men not a few 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea they came thither also and stirred up the people 14 And then
secret since the word began 26 But now is made manifest and by the scriptures of the prophets according to the commandment of the everlasting God made known to all nations for the obedience of faith 27 To God only wise be glory through Jesus Christ for ever Amen ¶ Written to the Romans from Corinthus and sent by Phebe servant of the church at Cenchrea ¶ The first epistle of PAUL the apostle to the CORINTHIANS CHAP. I. CHAP. II. He declareth that his preaching 1 though it bring not excellency of speech or of 4 humane wisdom yet consisteth in the 4 5 power of God and so far excelleth 6 the wisdom of this world and 9 humane sense as that 14 the natural man cannot understand it ANd I brethren when I came to you * Chap. 1.17 came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom declaring unto you the testimony of God 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you save Jesus Christ and him crucified 3 And I was with you in weakness in fear in much trembling 4 And my speech and my preaching * 2 Pet. 1.16 was not with ‖ Or perswasible enticing words of mans wisdom but in demonstration of the Spirit of power 5 That your faith should not †Gr. be stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God 6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect yet not the wisdom of this world nor of the princes of this world that come to nought 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery even the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the world unto our glory 8 Which none of the princes of this world knew for had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory 9 But as it is written * Isa 64.4 Eye hath not seen nor ear heard neither have entred into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love him 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit for the Spirit searcheth all things yea the deep things of God 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him even so the things of God knoweth no man but the Spirit of God 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit which is of God that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God 13 * 2 Pet. 1.16 Which things also we speak not in the words which mans wisdom teacheth but which the holy Ghost teacheth comparing

III. 2 Milk is fit for children 3 Strife and division arguments of a fiesbly minde 7 He that planteth and he that watereth is nothing 9 The ministers are Gods fellow-workmen 11 Christ the onely foundation 16 Meu the temples of God 17 which must be kept holy 19 The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God ANd I brethren could not speak unto you as unto spiritual but as unto carnal even as unto babes in Christ 2 I have fed you with * Heb. 5.12 milk and not with meat for hitherto ye were not able to bear it neither yet now are ye able 3 For ye are yet carnal for whereas there is among you envying and strife and ‖ Or factions divisions are ye not carnal and walk †Gr. according to man as men 4 For while one saith I am of Paul and another I am of Apollos are ye not carnal 5 Who then is Paul and who is Apollos but ministers by whom ye beleeved even as the Lord gave to every man 6 I have planted Apollos watered but God gave the increase 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing neither he that watereth but God that giveth the increase 8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one * Psal 62.12 Gal. 6.5 and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour 9 For we are labourers together with God ye are Gods ‖ Or tillage husbandry ye are Gods building 10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me as a wise master-builder I have laid the foundation and another buildeth thereon But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon 11 For other foundation can no man lay then that is laid which is Jesus Christ 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold silver precious stones wood hay stubble 13 Every mans work shall be made manifest For the day shall declare it because it †Gr. is revealed shall be revealed by fire and the fire shall try every mans work of what sort it is 14 If any mans work abide which he hath built thereupon he shall receive a reward 15 If any mans work shall be burnt he shall suffer loss but he himself shall be saved yet so as by fire 16 * Chap. 6.19 2 Cor. 6.16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you 17 If any man ‖ Or destroy defile the temple of God him shall God destroy for the temple of God is holy which temple ye are 18 Let no man deceive himself If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world let him become a fool that he may be wise 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God for it is written * Job 5.13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness 20 And again * Psal 94.11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise that they are vain 21 Therefore let no man glory in men for all things are yours 22 Whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come all are yours 23 And ye are Christs and Christ is Gods CHAP. IV. 1 In what account the ministers ought to be had 7 We have nothing which we have not received 9 The apostles spectacles to the world angels and men 13 the filth and off-scouring of the world 15 yet our fathers in Christ 16 whom we ought to follow LEt a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you or of mans †Gr. day judgement yea I judge not my own self 4 For I know nothing by my self yet am I not hereby justified but he that judgeth me is the Lord. 5 * Matth. 7.1 Rom. 2.1 Therefore judge nothing before the time until the Lord come who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts and then shall every man have praise of God 6 And these things brethren I have in a figure transferred to my self and to Apollos for your sakes that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written that no one of you be puffed up for one against another 7 For who †Gr. distinguisheth thee maketh thee to differ from another and what hast thou that thou didst not receive now if thou didst receive it why dost thou glory as if thou hadst not received it 8 Now ye are full now ye are rich ye have reigned as kings without us and I would to God ye did reign that we also might reign with you 9 For I think that God hath let forth us the apostles last as it were appointed to death For we are made a †Gr. theatre spectacle unto the world and to angels and to men 10 We are fools for Christs sake but ye are wise in Christ we are weak but ye are strong ye are honourable but we are despised 11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no certain dwelling place 12 * Acts 12.34 1 Thes 2.9 2 Thes 3.8 And labour working with our own hands being reviled we bless being persecuted we suffer it 13 * Mat. 5.44 Being defamed we intreat we are made as the filth of the world and are the off-scouring of all things unto this day 14 I write not these things to shame you but as my beloved sons I warn you 15 For though you have ten thousand instructours in Christ yet have ye not many fathers for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel 16 Wherefore I beseech you be ye followers of me 17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus who is my beloved son and faithful in the Lord who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ as I teach every where in every church 18 Now some are puffed up as though I would not come to you 19 * Acts 19.21 But I will come to you shortly * Jam. 4.15 if the Lord will and will know not the speech of them which are puffed up but the
