and_o the_o lord_n he_o regard_v the_o heart_n and_o he_o know_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o spirit_n though_o thy_o speech_n be_v never_o so_o ragged_a and_o break_a though_o thy_o sentence_n be_v it_o with_o his_o soul_n though_o he_o speak_v not_o the_o word_n for_o example_n sake_n i_o say_v the_o lord_n prayer_n yea_o when_o i_o speak_v these_o word_n give_v we_o this_o day_n our_o daily_a bread_n there_o come_v into_o my_o soul_n by_o the_o motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n this_o petition_n grant_v i_o grace_n to_o be_v content_a with_o the_o mediocrity_n thou_o have_v give_v i_o if_o i_o though_o many_o motion_n come_v into_o my_o mind_n upon_o consideration_n of_o the_o word_n of_o that_o prayer_n which_o i_o utter_v not_o in_o particular_a speech_n yet_o i_o utter_v they_o in_o general_a for_o they_o be_v all_o comprehend_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o that_o otherwise_o they_o may_v just_o be_v term_v wander_v thought_n though_o good_a prayer_n at_o other_o time_n last_o rest_n recreation_n physic_n etc._n etc._n secret_n want_n and_o blessing_n may_v be_v acknowledge_v in_o secret_a prayer_n if_o any_o extraordinary_a occasion_n occur_v extraordinary_a prayer_n according_o may_v be_v have_v they_o allege_v also_o against_o set_a prayer_n the_o speech_n of_o the_o apostle_n objection_n 8._o rom._n 8._o we_o know_v not_o what_o to_o pray_v but_o in_o a_o set_a pray_v with_o sigh_n and_o groan_n which_o can_v be_v utter_v when_o we_o have_v this_o spirit_n of_o god_n than_o we_o know_v what_o to_o pray_v and_o can_v teach_v other_o also_o this_o may_v suffice_v for_o the_o answer_n of_o their_o main_a objection_n against_o set_a prayer_n to_o conclude_v then_o christ_n have_v not_o command_v we_o to_o use_v these_o word_n and_o no_o other_o neither_o have_v he_o forbid_v we_o to_o use_v these_o word_n or_o any_o other_o holy_a form_n of_o prayer_n but_o he_o have_v leave_v it_o indifferent_a and_o arbitrarie_a to_o use_v they_o or_o not_o to_o use_v they_o as_o be_v say_v hitherto_o of_o the_o precept_n of_o prayer_n in_o the_o two_o general_a point_n thereof_o first_o that_o we_o must_v pray_v second_o how_o we_o must_v pray_v now_o follow_v the_o prayer_n itself_o in_o handle_v whereof_o we_o will_v first_o propound_v some_o general_a consideration_n after_o descend_v to_o the_o particular_a exposition_n of_o the_o word_n abuse_v and_o so_o of_o any_o other_o godly_a prayer_n for_o this_o prayer_n be_v all_o prayer_n in_o virtue_n and_o largeness_n see_v that_o all_o prayer_n must_v be_v frame_v of_o the_o matter_n and_o affection_n herein_o express_v it_o be_v abuse_v especial_o by_o four_o sort_n of_o
they_o speak_v this_o prayer_n to_o god_n they_o be_v never_o a_o whit_n better_v thereby_o and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o they_o also_o they_o use_v it_o without_o fear_n and_o reverence_n as_o every_o part_n of_o holy_a scripture_n shall_v be_v use_v and_o therefore_o abuse_v it_o 66.5_o esa_n 66.5_o whereby_o it_o appear_v evident_o that_o wicked_a and_o hard_a heart_a and_o impenitent_a person_n that_o purpose_v to_o continue_v still_o in_o their_o sin_n do_v abuse_v this_o prayer_n though_o peradventure_o they_o understand_v it_o when_o they_o utter_v it_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n three_o the_o papist_n also_o abuse_v this_o prayer_n and_o that_o three_o way_n especial_o 1._o they_o say_v it_o in_o latin_a a_o tongue_n unknown_a to_o the_o common_a sort_n of_o people_n 2._o they_o say_v it_o in_o number_n upon_o their_o bead_n 3._o they_o say_v it_o as_o satisfactory_a and_o meritorious_a 1_o first_o they_o abuse_v it_o because_o they_o say_v it_o in_o latin_a prayer_n how_o papist_n abuse_v prayer_n a_o tongue_n which_o for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v not_o understand_v of_o they_o that_o say_v it_o and_o hardly_o well_o pronounce_v by_o the_o multitude_n but_o understanding_n be_v necessary_o require_v in_o prayer_n 14.26_o 1._o cor._n 14.26_o as_o be_v say_v before_o and_o whereas_o the_o jesuite_n avouch_v that_o god_n understand_v latin_n or_o any_o language_n and_o prayer_n be_v direct_v to_o god_n and_o that_o instruction_n of_o the_o hearer_n be_v no_o end_n of_o prayer_n but_o of_o preach_v we_o answer_v that_o the_o apostle_n say_v flat_o that_o all_o thing_n must_v be_v do_v to_o edification_n therefore_o prayer_n also_o which_o be_v some_o thing_n nay_o a_o chief_a and_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o public_a service_n of_o god_n hence_o we_o read_v that_o the_o title_n of_o some_o of_o the_o psalm_n which_o be_v prayer_n be_v to_o give_v instruction_n as_o psal_n 74._o and_o 89._o that_o therefore_o be_v but_o a_o forgery_n of_o man_n contrary_n to_o the_o word_n for_o prayer_n be_v a_o excellent_a mean_n of_o edification_n it_o be_v as_o a_o whetstone_n to_o sharpen_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o understanding_n and_o this_o be_v the_o edification_n of_o prayer_n therefore_o herein_o the_o jesuite_n be_v great_o mistake_v that_o they_o think_v instruction_n and_o edification_n no_o end_n of_o 103.1_o that_o we_o love_v god_n with_o all_o our_o heart_n our_o soul_n our_o mind_n our_o thought_n our_o strength_n and_o all_o that_o be_v within_o we_o must_v praise_v his_o holy_a name_n but_o as_o be_v say_v before_o prayer_n be_v command_v in_o the_o first_o table_n and_o be_v therefore_o a_o part_n of_o love_n we_o owe_v to_o god_n hence_o than_o it_o follow_v as_o a_o necessary_a conclusion_n that_o we_o must_v testify_v that_o we_o love_v god_n with_o our_o mind_n and_o with_o all_o our_o mind_n in_o prayer_n when_o our_o mind_n be_v busy_v about_o the_o understanding_n and_o consideration_n of_o that_o holy_a matter_n which_o we_o utter_v to_o god_n but_o that_o can_v possible_o be_v if_o we_o understand_v not_o what_o we_o speak_v as_o they_o do_v not_o that_o speak_v their_o prayer_n in_o a_o unknown_a language_n as_o latin_a they_o therefore_o abuse_v prayer_n that_o pray_v in_o latin_a not_o understand_v it_o 3_o last_o as_o have_v be_v say_v it_o be_v plain_a babble_n to_o speak_v any_o thing_n with_o the_o lip_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n which_o a_o man_n understand_v not_o or_o desire_v not_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n 6.20_o 1._o cor._n 6.20_o for_o we_o must_v glorify_v god_n with_o the_o body_n and_o with_o the_o spirit_n both_o for_o they_o be_v both_o god_n by_o creation_n and_o redemption_n now_o to_o pray_v to_o god_n be_v a_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o glorify_v of_o god_n therefore_o we_o must_v pray_v with_o the_o spirit_n as_o well_o as_o with_o the_o tongue_n which_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o body_n for_o whereas_o forgery_n as_o the_o former_a of_o the_o jesuite_n that_o hold_v instruction_n no_o end_n of_o prayer_n for_o whereas_o they_o allege_v for_o confirmation_n of_o their_o opinion_n that_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o in_o our_o own_o power_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v it_o from_o wander_v sure_o we_o must_v needs_o grant_v it_o to_o be_v so_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o it_o be_v sin_n for_o we_o to_o suffer_v our_o heart_n to_o wander_v and_o who_o dare_v go_v speak_v to_o his_o prince_n his_o mind_n either_o not_o understand_v his_o matter_n or_o wander_v from_o it_o which_o in_o effect_n be_v all_o one_o wherefore_o if_o babble_a be_n abuse_v of_o prayer_n and_o they_o babble_v which_o understand_v not_o or_o attend_v not_o their_o prayer_n no_o doubt_v they_o that_o say_v the_o lord_n prayer_n in_o latin_a not_o understanding_n latin_a abuse_v it_o thus_o than_o the_o papist_n abuse_v this_o prayer_n by_o say_v it_o in_o latin_a a_o tongue_n unknown_a to_o the_o people_n second_o the_o papist_n abuse_v this_o prayer_n especial_o by_o say_v it_o in_o number_n and_o number_v it_o upon_o their_o bead_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o they_o say_v a_o whole_a beadrole_n of_o prayer_n as_o for_o example_n 30._o prayer_n pater_fw-la noster_n have_v mary_n cree_v etc._n etc._n which_o will_v be_v prove_v to_o be_v a_o manifest_a abuse_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n for_o first_o this_o be_v to_o babble_n for_o it_o can_v be_v that_o every_o man_n devotion_n shall_v last_v so_o long_o as_o the_o number_n of_o the_o prayer_n last_v for_o some_o weak_a christian_n fervency_n and_o zeal_n will_v not_o endure_v long_o than_o the_o say_n of_o the_o prayer_n twice_o or_o thrice_o over_o at_o which_o time_n he_o must_v cease_v say_v it_o for_o if_o he_o still_o continue_v say_v it_o without_o fervency_n and_o devotion_n and_o attention_n in_o a_o word_n without_o sense_n and_o feeling_n his_o say_n be_v babble_v only_o a_o liplabor_n which_o be_v abominable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n 5.1.2_o matth._n 6.7_o eccles_n 5.1.2_o 2_o again_o our_o saviour_n christ_n condemn_v vain_a repetition_n and_o the_o wise_a preacher_n
