be_v to_o be_v measure_v by_o the_o end_n that_o the_o end_n be_v our_o salvation_n consequent_o the_o spirit_n operation_n on_o the_o mind_n be_v to_o produce_v all_o those_o effect_n as_o be_v necessary_a to_o eternal_a life_n these_o be_v faith_n knowledge_n all_o virtue_n or_o grace_n which_o make_v we_o practical_a christian_n and_o perseverance_n here_o be_v his_o needful_a effect_n then_o his_o profitable_a and_o not_o necessary_a be_v degree_n of_o goodness_n which_o be_v more_o high_o so_o or_o degree_n of_o knowledge_n that_o be_v less_o profitable_a here_o he_o discourse_n whether_o god_n do_v give_v the_o spirit_n for_o these_o thing_n profitable_a upon_o our_o ask_n and_o tell_v we_o god_n may_v give_v we_o thing_n better_a or_o more_o suitable_a and_o so_o deny_v they_o then_o he_o show_v we_o how_o the_o spirit_n be_v pray_v for_o in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n because_o when_o we_o ask_v for_o any_o grace_n or_o virtue_n we_o ask_v for_o he_o to_o work_v it_o in_o the_o whole_a then_o of_o this_o chapter_n we_o have_v nothing_o against_o the_o doctor_n or_o the_o doctor_n against_o he_o but_o a_o good_a sermon_n i_o suppose_v we_o have_v which_o he_o may_v have_v preach_v somewhere_o and_o adapt_n it_o to_o this_o occasion_n which_o make_v it_o look_v though_o well_o yet_o feat_n and_o unlike_o a_o beat_a divine_a who_o in_o show_v what_o the_o effect_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v will_v have_v cast_v they_o into_o some_o proper_a and_o full_a order_n and_o then_o prove_v they_o by_o scripture_n and_o quite_o let_v alone_o this_o sermon_n his_o three_o chapter_n be_v about_o regeneration_n which_o he_o make_v room_n for_o by_o a_o objection_n that_o this_o will_v be_v think_v but_o a_o lame_a account_n of_o those_o qualification_n that_o be_v needful_a to_o salvation_n see_v one_o thing_n most_o necessary_a thereunto_o be_v omit_v and_o that_o be_v regeneration_n and_o here_o then_o must_v regeneration_n be_v bring_v in_o and_o show_v we_o to_o differ_v with_o he_o upon_o the_o matter_n the_o doctor_n may_v use_v other_o term_n and_o expression_n and_o he_o use_v these_o but_o they_o both_o intend_v the_o same_o thing_n this_o be_v certain_a he_o that_o do_v righteousness_n be_v bear_v of_o god_n the_o doctor_n belike_o have_v say_v that_o regeneration_n be_v a_o proper_a term_n and_o he_o will_v prove_v it_o to_o be_v metaphorical_a be_v it_o so_o the_o doctor_n must_v be_v candid_o understand_v then_o that_o he_o mean_v it_o be_v a_o proper_a metaphor_n to_o wit_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o secret_a and_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o soul_n signify_v thereby_o as_o do_v bring_v in_o a_o new_a disposion_n into_o the_o inner_a man_n as_o well_o as_o reform_v the_o outward_a life_n which_o be_v that_o only_o in_o effect_n he_o contend_v for_o let_v they_o grant_v say_v the_o doctor_n that_o their_o moral_a reformation_n of_o life_n do_v proceed_v from_o a_o spiritual_a reformation_n of_o our_o nature_n the_o difference_n will_v be_v at_o a_o end_n and_o what_o say_v this_o author_n he_o answer_v this_o difference_n be_v at_o a_o end_n before_o it_o begin_v for_o we_o have_v always_o grant_v it_o and_o why_o be_v the_o difference_n up_o then_o that_o have_v no_o beginning_n or_o cause_n for_o it_o the_o doctor_n be_v perhaps_o too_o warm_a in_o the_o allusion_n but_o the_o meaning_n be_v wherein_o these_o two_o champion_n will_v differ_v but_o that_o belong_v to_o another_o chapter_n here_o he_o speak_v of_o regeneration_n only_o as_o a_o state_n and_o therefore_o i_o pray_v let_v he_o be_v quiet_a yet_o a_o while_n till_o he_o come_v thither_o in_o his_o four_o chapter_n he_o lay_v down_o the_o several_a grace_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o have_v do_v once_o before_o i_o can_v apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v momentous_a in_o his_o make_v two_o chapter_n of_o it_o these_o grace_n then_o again_o be_v faith_n teachableness_n in_o order_n to_o it_o all_o christian_a another_o excellent_a good_a sermon_n chap._n iii_o of_o assuranee_n and_o pray_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o subject_n of_o his_o five_o chapter_n with_o indifferency_n whether_o it_o be_v by_o a_o to_o the_o people_n you_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n if_o you_o have_v all_o this_o while_n rely_v upon_o the_o authority_n of_o man_n in_o heavenly_a thing_n this_o seem_v to_o imply_v say_v the_o gentleman_n that_o all_o man_n be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o damnation_n who_o rely_v upon_o the_o honesty_n and_o wisdom_n of_o their_o spiritual_a guide_n in_o matter_n of_o faith_n but_o i_o hope_v some_o of_o those_o do_v so_o firm_o believe_v the_o truth_n upon_o the_o testimony_n of_o god_n minister_n as_o to_o live_v according_a to_o it_o which_o if_o they_o do_v god_n forhid_v that_o i_o shall_v say_v they_o be_v in_o a_o damnable_a condition_n if_o i_o may_v take_v my_o conjecture_n from_o this_o less_o virulent_a passage_n in_o the_o preface_n into_o what_o odious_a construction_n the_o drs._n word_n be_v like_a to_o be_v wiredraw_v still_o throughout_o the_o book_n it_o will_v be_v to_o no_o purpose_n i_o count_v for_o i_o to_o go_v about_o the_o redeem_n the_o dr._n from_o abuse_n which_o be_v so_o multiply_v upon_o he_o of_o all_o sort_n and_o on_o all_o occasion_n as_o please_v these_o author_n prejudicate_v mind_n but_o to_o attend_v rather_o other_o chapter_n the_o introduction_n present_v we_o with_o a_o dissertation_n about_o one_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n which_o be_v much_o canvas_v in_o the_o arminian_n controversy_n and_o do_v therefore_o require_v our_o first_o attendance_n the_o word_n be_v these_o the_o natural_a man_n receive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v foolishness_n to_o he_o neither_o can_v he_o know_v they_o because_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v by_o the_o natural_a man_n this_o worthy_a person_n understand_v one_o that_o be_v govern_v only_o by_o reason_n and_o by_o the_o spiritual_a man_n he_o understand_v he_o that_o receive_v and_o judge_n of_o thing_n by_o the_o scripture_n the_o natural_a man_n now_o say_v he_o receive_v not_o those_o doctrine_n of_o christianity_n the_o truth_n whereof_o be_v not_o discoverable_a by_o natural_a reason_n because_o they_o be_v foolishness_n to_o he_o in_o that_o they_o can_v be_v prove_v hereby_o and_o he_o can_v know_v they_o because_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v that_o be_v because_o they_o be_v make_v know_v only_o by_o revelation_n which_o the_o natural_a man_n either_o have_v not_o or_o reject_v see_v here_o a_o interpretation_n which_o look_v grave_a and_o solid_a as_o well_o as_o ingenious_a but_o whether_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o right_n or_o no_o we_o be_v to_o judge_v by_o the_o consistency_n of_o it_o with_o the_o place_n in_o the_o twelve_o verse_n before_o the_o text_n the_o apostle_n say_v that_o we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v before_o call_v the_o deep_a thing_n of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o verse_n next_o after_o the_o text_n he_o tell_v we_o the_o spiritual_a man_n judge_v all_o thing_n it_o be_v apparent_a then_o that_o the_o spiritual_a man_n in_o the_o one_o verse_n and_o he_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n in_o the_o other_o must_v be_v one_o but_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o scripture_n without_o we_o to_o judge_v of_o thing_n by_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n within_o either_o inspire_v these_o thing_n or_o operate_n on_o the_o mind_n to_o understand_v they_o be_v two_o thing_n and_o consequent_o if_o the_o spiritual_a man_n be_v he_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n within_o to_o know_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n it_o must_v not_o be_v he_o that_o have_v only_o receive_v the_o scripture_n and_o reject_v they_o not_o beside_o this_o a_o man_n may_v receive_v the_o scripture_n as_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n and_o judge_v of_o doctrine_n by_o it_o and_o be_v much_o skilled_a in_o the_o letter_n of_o it_o as_o the_o socinian_o be_v and_o yet_o not_o receive_v the_o great_a mystery_n thereof_o god_n manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n and_o how_o do_v the_o spiritual_a man_n judge_n of_o all_o thing_n if_o this_o be_v the_o spiritual_a man_n nay_o how_o can_v it_o be_v say_v of_o he_o that_o he_o be_v judge_v of_o none_o see_v as_o he_o judge_v all_o thing_n by_o these_o scripture_n so_o be_v he_o judge_v of_o all_o in_o what_o he_o hold_v by_o the_o same_o there_o be_v another_o interpretation_n

that_o manifestation_n possible_o may_v be_v by_o some_o shechinah_n sometime_o on_o the_o head_n of_o the_o baptize_v but_o the_o certain_a meaning_n appear_v in_o the_o follow_a verse_n to_o be_v by_o the_o miraculous_a gift_n then_o pour_v out_o among_o which_o gift_n one_o of_o they_o be_v the_o discernment_n of_o mystery_n spirit_n that_o be_v doctrine_n and_o so_o be_v the_o spirit_n give_v and_o receive_v we_o be_v to_o suppose_v in_o this_o place_n we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n say_v the_o text_n to_o this_o effect_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v free_o give_v we_o the_o whole_a meaning_n than_o be_v thus_o the_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d the_o man_n who_o have_v not_o this_o spirit_n then_o pour_v on_o he_o can_v not_o discern_v those_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o other_o of_o they_o can_v who_o have_v it_o because_o these_o hide_a thing_n be_v discoverable_a by_o that_o miraculous_a gift_n and_o he_o have_v not_o the_o gift_n to_o discern_v they_o must_v judge_v of_o they_o by_o natural_a reason_n only_o and_o so_o they_o be_v foolishness_n to_o he_o when_o as_o to_o they_o who_o have_v it_o they_o appear_v the_o power_n of_o god_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n and_o of_o this_o spiritual_a man_n so_o interpret_v that_o be_v the_o inspire_a man_n one_o that_o have_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o last_o verse_n and_o that_o receive_v the_o spirit_n in_o the_o ten_o for_o this_o effect_n the_o discernment_n of_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o understand_v how_o he_o can_v judge_v all_o thing_n and_o be_v judge_v of_o none_o in_o regard_n that_o this_o inspiration_n within_o can_v be_v discernible_a to_o himself_o only_o and_o so_o the_o text_n and_o context_n and_o the_o whole_a chapter_n shall_v be_v make_v to_o agree_v throughout_o one_o verse_n with_o another_o nevertheless_o there_o be_v one_o inconvenience_n this_o interpretation_n be_v liable_a to_o as_o will_v make_v it_o to_o be_v refuse_v by_o most_o man_n when_o we_o have_v say_v all_o we_o can_v it_o be_v this_o that_o if_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n then_o must_v this_o whole_a place_n be_v applicable_a only_o to_o those_o christian_n in_o the_o apostle_n day_n and_o no_o christian_a at_o this_o time_n can_v be_v concern_v that_o be_v if_o this_o be_v the_o sense_n then_o be_v there_o no_o man_n now_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o he_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n no_o spiritual_a man_n now_o in_o the_o true_a sense_n of_o this_o place_n but_o all_o must_v be_v natural_a man_n only_o as_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n according_a to_o this_o interpretation_n when_o yet_o the_o give_v of_o the_o spirit_n otherwhere_o and_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o other_o text_n be_v a_o branch_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o he_o that_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n st._n paul_n say_v in_o another_o place_n be_v none_o of_o he_o there_o be_v a_o three_o interpretation_n therefore_o that_o by_o the_o natural_a man_n and_o spiritual_a man_n we_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o unregenerate_a and_o regenerate_v man_n that_o be_v one_o that_o have_v not_o and_o one_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n to_o the_o ordinary_a effect_n of_o it_o which_o be_v illumination_n and_o sanctification_n and_o this_o be_v the_o most_o general_a opinion_n and_o interpretation_n which_o be_v receive_v by_o our_o divine_n and_o so_o take_v up_o by_o dr._n owen_n however_o elaborate_o he_o have_v improve_v it_o so_o little_a reason_n have_v this_o gentleman_n or_o any_o other_o to_o make_v any_o assault_n on_o he_o for_o that_o matter_n when_o the_o unregenerate_a man_n then_o in_o the_o text_n be_v say_v not_o 〈…〉_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n 〈…〉_o he_o can_v that_o be_v moral_o can_v receive_v 〈…〉_o mean_v of_o our_o divine_n in_o general_n be_v this_o that_o 〈◊〉_d do_v not_o or_o can_v receive_v or_o discern_v they_o so_o as_o to_o savour_v they_o or_o relish_v they_o he_o do_v not_o or_o can_v embrace_v they_o in_o his_o heart_n as_o good_a to_o he_o or_o so_o as_o to_o lead_v his_o life_n according_a to_o they_o in_o short_a he_o can_v receive_v they_o so_o as_o to_o apply_v they_o and_o this_o be_v a_o truth_n never_o to_o be_v gainsay_v by_o this_o man_n though_o which_o of_o the_o three_o interpretation_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v i_o pass_v not_o my_o own_o judgement_n let_v we_o hear_v this_o author_n objection_n the_o doctor_n say_v he_o do_v grant_v that_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n may_v assent_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o if_o he_o can_v assent_v to_o they_o he_o can_v see_v a_o conformity_n in_o they_o to_o god_n attribute_n and_o a_o suitableness_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o if_o he_o can_v see_v this_o then_o will_v they_o not_o appear_v foolishness_n to_o he_o and_o consequent_o he_o can_v know_v they_o every_o one_o will_v answer_v to_o this_o there_o be_v a_o speculative_a and_o a_o practical_a knowledge_n when_o our_o divine_n say_v the_o unregenerate_a man_n can_v know_v these_o thing_n they_o understand_v it_o of_o a_o practical_a knowledge_n he_o do_v know_v they_o special_a lively_a but_o he_o have_v no_o vital_a experimental_a knowledge_n of_o they_o and_o when_o the_o reason_n be_v give_v in_o the_o text_n because_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v we_o must_v expound_v spiritual_o i._n e._n by_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n spirit_n according_a to_o this_o three_o interpretation_n the_o natural_a man_n do_v not_o receive_v know_v or_o discern_v these_o thing_n of_o god_n as_o able_a i_o account_v to_o apply_v they_o because_o they_o be_v discern_v only_o by_o a_o supernatural_a assistance_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o they_o have_v not_o can_v do_v it_o i_o will_v answer_v far_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v give_v and_o receive_v to_o divers_a effect_n on_o she_o for_o illumination_n and_o conviction_n or_o for_o conversion_n and_o sanctification_n if_o the_o natural_a man_n who_o be_v one_o without_o the_o spirit_n have_v not_o the_o spirit_n at_o all_o to_o illuminate_v and_o convince_v he_o he_o believe_v not_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n though_o he_o hear_v they_o there_o be_v no_o man_n can_v say_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o lord_n but_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o while_o he_o in_o his_o heart_n believe_v they_o not_o they_o be_v indeed_o to_o he_o but_o foolishness_n when_o if_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n but_o to_o enlighten_v and_o to_o convince_v he_o he_o may_v dogmatical_o receive_v they_o go_v so_o far_o and_o yet_o until_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n also_o to_o convert_v he_o and_o sanctify_v he_o he_o can_v discern_v they_o i_o must_v still_o say_v so_o as_o to_o apply_v they_o to_o his_o salvation_n here_o be_v three_o interpretation_n then_o propose_v to_o they_o who_o please_v to_o strive_v for_o mastery_n i_o have_v but_o one_o note_n more_o to_o add_v out_o of_o this_o author_n by_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v say_v he_o speak_v of_o these_o thing_n in_o the_o text_n be_v mean_v their_o be_v know_v understand_v and_o judge_v of_o by_o the_o revelation_n and_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n thus_o much_o be_v right_a and_o must_v be_v agree_v upon_o by_o all_o three_o interpretation_n only_o their_o difference_n then_o also_o must_v be_v lay_v down_o this_o revelation_n or_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o be_v either_o external_a or_o internal_a the_o first_o opinion_n which_o be_v this_o author_n will_v have_v this_o

time_n and_o the_o second_o opinion_n be_v that_o the_o place_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o these_o gift_n and_o such_o working_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o do_v not_o belong_v now_o to_o we_o or_o but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n these_o thing_n of_o god_n be_v i_o say_v the_o arbitrary_a council_n of_o god_n will_n for_o the_o save_a man_n by_o his_o grace_n in_o and_o through_o jesus_n such_o a_o sense_n of_o the_o chapter_n as_o make_v the_o receive_v the_o spirit_n there_o applicable_a only_o to_o the_o christian_n in_o the_o primitive_a time_n can_v be_v the_o same_o with_o that_o which_o give_v such_o a_o sense_n of_o it_o as_o make_v it_o applicable_a to_o christian_n now_o whether_o all_o of_o they_o regenerate_v and_o unregenerate_a who_o have_v but_o their_o it_o be_v not_o bread_n the_o only_a difficulty_n here_o be_v to_z state_z this_o assurance_n it_o be_v a_o controversal_a point_n and_o his_o one_o term_n absolute_a will_v do_v little_a to_o the_o decision_n when_o our_o first_o divine_n define_v faith_n by_o a_o persuasion_n of_o special_a mercy_n so_o that_o without_o this_o assurance_n they_o must_v think_v a_o man_n can_v not_o be_v save_v this_o be_v the_o most_o dangerous_a extreme_a on_o one_o hand_n and_o that_o no_o man_n at_o all_o without_o revelation_n according_a to_o the_o trent_n doctor_n can_v be_v assure_v that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n be_v the_o extreme_a on_o the_o other_o but_o for_o the_o state_v this_o assurance_n aright_o between_o the_o protestant_n and_o papist_n to_o be_v a_o certainty_n not_o of_o faith_n because_o the_o scripture_n give_v no_o testimony_n to_o any_o particular_a person_n but_o a_o certainty_n moral_a or_o of_o hope_n which_o must_v be_v such_o as_o exclude_v doubt_v that_o be_v all_o sinful_a doubt_n though_o not_o fear_v or_o all_o fear_n that_o be_v the_o fear_n of_o diffidence_n or_o distrust_n but_o not_o the_o fear_n of_o pious_a solicitude_n be_v a_o work_n
