instrument_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o how_o fond_a soever_o we_o be_v of_o they_o we_o may_v certain_o conclude_v that_o bodily_a pleasure_n be_v the_o mean_a pleasure_n of_o humane_a nature_n because_o the_o union_n to_o these_o earthly_a body_n be_v the_o mean_a and_o most_o despicable_a state_n of_o reasonable_a soul_n these_o be_v not_o its_o proper_a and_o genuine_a pleasure_n which_o must_v result_v from_o its_o own_o nature_n and_o power_n but_o be_v only_o external_a impression_n the_o light_n and_o superficial_a touch_n of_o matter_n and_o it_o will_v be_v very_o absurd_a to_o conceive_v that_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o only_a subject_n of_o pleasure_n shall_v have_v no_o pleasure_n of_o its_o own_o but_o borrow_v its_o whole_a happiness_n from_o its_o affinity_n and_o alliance_n to_o matter_n or_o that_o its_o great_a pleasure_n shall_v be_v owe_v to_o external_a impression_n not_o to_o the_o act_n of_o its_o own_o natural_a faculty_n and_o power_n which_o may_v convince_v we_o as_o i_o observe_v before_o that_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v much_o the_o great_a and_o noble_a pleasure_n of_o the_o man_n and_o he_o who_o will_v be_v true_o happy_a must_v seek_v for_o it_o not_o in_o bodily_a entertainment_n but_o in_o the_o improvement_n and_o exercise_n of_o reason_n and_o religion_n 3_o hence_o we_o learn_v also_o that_o the_o body_n be_v make_v for_o the_o soul_n not_o the_o soul_n for_o the_o body_n as_o that_o which_o in_o itself_o have_v no_o life_n and_o sense_n be_v make_v for_o the_o use_n of_o that_o which_o have_v the_o body_n be_v only_o a_o convenient_a habitation_n for_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o world_n a_o instrument_n of_o action_n and_o a_o trial_n and_o exercise_n of_o virtue_n but_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o use_v the_o body_n and_o to_o govern_v it_o to_o taste_v its_o pleasure_n and_o to_o set_v bound_n to_o they_o to_o make_v the_o body_n serviceable_a to_o the_o end_n and_o purpose_n of_o reason_n pleasure_n and_o to_o be_v very_o temperate_a in_o our_o use_n of_o lawful_a one_o to_o be_v sure_a we_o must_v take_v care_n that_o the_o spiritual_a part_n that_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o of_o religion_n be_v always_o predominant_a in_o we_o and_o this_o will_v be_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n in_o we_o a_o principle_n of_o divine_a sensation_n and_o joy_n when_o this_o body_n shall_v tumble_v into_o dust._n vi_o if_o death_n be_v our_o put_v off_o these_o body_n than_o the_o resurrection_n from_o the_o dead_a be_v the_o reunion_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n the_o soul_n do_v not_o die_v and_o therefore_o can_v be_v say_v to_o rise_v again_o from_o the_o dead_a but_o it_o be_v the_o body_n which_o like_o seed_n fall_v into_o the_o earth_n and_o spring_v up_o again_o more_o glorify_a body_n be_v yet_o sure_o we_o can_v imagine_v that_o when_o these_o earthly_a body_n be_v the_o instrument_n of_o so_o many_o pleasure_n a_o spiritual_a and_o glorify_a body_n shall_v be_v of_o no_o use_n a_o soul_n and_o body_n can_v be_v vital_o unite_v but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o sympathy_n between_o they_o and_o receive_v mutual_a impression_n from_o each_o other_o and_o then_o we_o need_v not_o doubt_n but_o that_o such_o glorify_a body_n will_v high_o minister_v though_o in_o a_o way_n unknown_a to_o we_o to_o the_o pleasure_n of_o a_o divine_a and_o perfect_a soul_n will_v infinite_o more_o contribute_v to_o the_o divine_a pleasure_n of_o the_o mind_n than_o these_o earthly_a body_n do_v to_o our_o sensual_a pleasure_n that_o all_o who_o have_v this_o hope_n and_o expectation_n may_v as_o st._n paul_n speak_v earnest_o groan_v within_o themselves_o wait_v for_o the_o adoption_n even_o the_o redemption_n of_o our_o body_n 8._o rom._n 23._o this_o be_v the_o day_n of_o the_o marriage_n of_o the_o lamb_n this_o consummate_v our_o happiness_n when_o our_o body_n and_o soul_n meet_v again_o not_o to_o disturb_v and_o oppose_v each_o other_o as_o they_o do_v in_o this_o world_n where_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n be_v at_o perpetual_a enmity_n but_o to_o live_v in_o eternal_a harmony_n and_o to_o heighten_v and_o inflame_v each_o other_o joy_n sin_n be_v such_o a_o leprosy_n as_o can_v be_v perfect_o cleanse_v without_o pull_v down_o the_o house_n which_o it_o have_v once_o infect_v but_o if_o we_o will_v have_v these_o body_n raise_v up_o again_o immortal_a and_o glorious_a we_o must_v begin_v the_o cleanse_n and_o purification_n of_o they_o here_o we_o must_v be_v sanctify_v throughout_o both_o in_o body_n soul_n and_o spirit_n 1_o live_v to_o god_n and_o to_o another_o world_n that_o be_v in_o a_o word_n to_o be_v good_a betimes_o for_o those_o who_o begin_v to_o live_v with_o the_o first_o blooming_o of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n and_o give_v early_a and_o youthful_a speciman_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n if_o they_o reach_v to_o old_a age_n they_o live_v three_o time_n as_o long_o as_o those_o who_o count_v indeed_o as_o many_o year_n as_o they_o do_v but_o it_o may_v be_v have_v not_o live_v a_o three_o of_o their_o time_n but_o have_v lose_v it_o in_o sin_n and_o folly._n the_o first_o can_v look_v back_o to_o the_o very_a beginning_n of_o his_o life_n and_o enjoy_v all_o his_o past_a year_n still_o review_v they_o with_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n and_o bring_v they_o all_o to_o account_v but_o a_o late_a penitent_n must_v date_n his_o life_n from_o his_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n he_o dare_v look_v no_o far_a back_n for_o all_o beyond_o be_v lose_v or_o worse_o than_o lose_v it_o be_v like_o look_v back_o upon_o the_o rude_a chaos_n which_o be_v nothing_o but_o confusion_n and_o darkness_n before_o god_n form_v the_o world_n such_o be_v the_o life_n of_o a_o sinner_n before_o this_o new_a birth_n and_o new_a creation_n and_o therefore_o he_o have_v but_o a_o very_a little_a way_n to_o look_v back_o can_v give_v but_o a_o very_a short_a account_n of_o his_o life_n have_v but_o a_o very_a few_o year_n of_o his_o life_n which_o he_o dare_v own_o and_o carry_v into_o the_o other_o world_n with_o he_o 2._o we_o must_v have_v a_o care_n of_o all_o interruption_n and_o intermission_n of_o life_n that_o be_v of_o fall_a back_n into_o sin_n again_o after_o some_o hopeful_a beginning_n this_o be_v too_o often_o see_v that_o those_o who_o by_o the_o care_n and_o good_a government_n and_o wise_a instruction_n of_o parent_n and_o tutor_n have_v have_v the_o principle_n of_o virtue_n and_o piety_n early_o instill_v into_o they_o and_o
god_n if_o he_o sincere_o repent_v of_o his_o sin_n and_o reform_v his_o life_n but_o it_o only_o prove_v that_o a_o wicked_a &_o ungodly_a christian_a who_o prefer_v the_o pleasure_n and_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o world_n before_o the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n and_o defile_v his_o soul_n with_o impure_a and_o worldly_a lust_n what_o pretence_n soever_o he_o may_v make_v to_o the_o blessing_n or_o how_o importunate_a soever_o he_o may_v be_v for_o it_o shall_v receive_v no_o blessing_n from_o god_n that_o be_v that_o without_o holiness_n no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n which_o be_v the_o very_a thing_n the_o apostle_n intend_v to_o prove_v by_o this_o example_n as_o you_o may_v see_v v_o 14._o i_o grant_v the_o case_n be_v different_a as_o to_z church_n and_o nation_n sometime_o their_o day_n of_o grace_n be_v fix_v and_o determine_v beyond_o which_o without_o repentance_n they_o shall_v no_o long_o enjoy_v the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n thus_o the_o appearance_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o flesh_n and_o his_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o they_o be_v the_o last_o trial_n of_o jerusalem_n and_o determine_v the_o fate_n of_o that_o belove_a city_n and_o therefore_o when_o christ_n ride_v into_o jerusalem_n in_o order_n to_o his_o crucifixion_n when_o he_o be_v come_v near_o he_o behold_v the_o city_n and_o weep_v over_o it_o say_v if_o thou_o have_v know_v even_o thou_o at_o least_o in_o this_o thy_o day_n the_o thing_n which_o belong_v unto_o thy_o peace_n but_o now_o they_o be_v hide_v from_o thy_o eye_n for_o the_o day_n shall_v come_v unless_o they_o shorten_v their_o day_n of_o grace_n themselves_o god_n do_v not_o shorten_v it_o as_o long_o as_o they_o live_v in_o this_o world_n they_o be_v capable_a of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n if_o they_o true_o repent_v 2._o man_n may_v shorten_v their_o own_o day_n of_o grace_n not_o by_o shorten_v the_o time_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n for_o that_o last_v as_o long_o as_o this_o life_n do_v but_o by_o out-living_a the_o possibility_n of_o repentance_n and_o when_o they_o be_v past_a repentance_n their_o day_n of_o grace_n be_v at_o a_o end_n and_o this_o may_v be_v much_o short_a than_o their_o life_n that_o be_v man_n may_v so_o harden_v themselves_o in_o sin_n as_o to_o make_v their_o repentance_n moral_o impossible_a and_o god_n in_o his_o just_a and_o righteous_a of_o the_o israelite_n in_o the_o wilderness_n of_o who_o god_n swear_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o enter_v into_o his_o rest_n as_o appear_v from_o the_o application_n he_o himself_o make_v of_o it_o 3_o heb._n 12_o 13._o take_v heed_n brethren_n lest_o there_o be_v in_o any_o of_o you_o a_o evil_a heart_n of_o unbelief_n in_o depart_v from_o the_o live_a god_n but_o exhort_v one_o another_o daily_a while_o it_o be_v call_v to_o day_n lest_o any_o of_o you_o be_v harden_v through_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_n this_o be_v a_o plain_a account_n of_o that_o great_a question_n concern_v the_o length_n of_o the_o day_n of_o grace_n man_n may_v outlive_v the_o time_n of_o repentance_n may_v so_o harden_v themselves_o in_o sin_n as_o to_o make_v their_o repentance_n moral_o impossible_a but_o they_o can_v outlive_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o true_a penitent_n this_o be_v reason_n enough_o to_o discourage_v man_n from_o delay_v their_o repentance_n and_o indulge_v themselves_o in_o a_o vicious_a course_n of_o life_n lest_o they_o shall_v be_v harden_v by_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_n and_o shall_v be_v forsake_v by_o god_n but_o it_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o discourage_v true_a penitent_n from_o trust_v in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n how_o late_o soever_o their_o repentance_n be_v for_o while_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n the_o door_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n be_v not_o shut_v against_o true_a penitent_n 3._o but_o yet_o the_o reason_n of_o lengthen_v the_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n do_v not_o reach_v beyond_o this_o life_n this_o sufficient_o appear_v from_o what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v and_o for_o a_o further_a confirmation_n of_o it_o i_o shall_v add_v but_o this_o one_o comprehensive_a reason_n viz._n that_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v confine_v to_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o therefore_o this_o life_n be_v the_o only_a time_n to_o obtain_v the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o a_o title_n to_o future_a glory_n we_o shall_v be_v final_o absolve_v from_o all_o our_o sin_n and_o reward_v with_o eternal_a life_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n but_o we_o must_v sue_v out_o our_o pardon_n and_o make_v our_o call_v and_o election_n sure_a in_o this_o world._n the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o gospel_n of_o grace_n and_o contain_v the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o immortal_a life_n be_v preach_v only_o to_o man_n on_o earth_n and_o concern_v none_o else_o for_o this_o reason_n christ_n become_v man_n clothe_v with_o flesh_n and_o blood_n as_o we_o be_v that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o saviour_n of_o mankind_n which_o he_o need_v not_o have_v do_v have_v not_o their_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v wrought_v in_o this_o world_n for_o can_v they_o have_v be_v save_v in_o the_o next_o his_o grace_n may_v have_v meet_v they_o soon_o enough_o there_o and_o therefore_o at_o the_o birth_n of_o our_o saviour_n the_o angel_n sing_v glory_n be_v to_o god_n in_o the_o high_a on_o earth_n peace_n good_a will_n towards_o man_n 2_o luke_n 14._o the_o sacrifice_n of_o christ_n upon_o the_o cross_n as_o all_o jewish_a sacrifice_n which_o be_v type_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o though_o make_v in_o heaven_n relate_v only_o to_o man_n on_o earth_n as_o his_o sacrifice_n do_v the_o earthly_a tabernacle_n be_v a_o type_n of_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o that_o only_a and_o the_o worshipper_n in_o it_o be_v expiate_v by_o sacrifice_n there_o be_v two_o sacrament_n whereby_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v apply_v to_o we_o and_o which_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o they_o be_v confine_v to_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o if_o they_o have_v not_o their_o effect_n here_o they_o can_v have_v it_o in_o the_o next_o world_n these_o unite_v we_o to_o christ_n as_o member_n of_o his_o body_n and_o then_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o animate_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n take_v possession_n of_o we_o renew_v and_o sanctify_v we_o but_o if_o we_o prove_v dead_a and_o barren_a branch_n in_o this_o spiritual_a vine_n if_o the_o censure_n of_o the_o church_n do_v not_o cut_v we_o off_o from_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n death_n will_v and_o then_o we_o can_v never_o be_v reunite_v to_o he_o nor_o save_v by_o he_o in_o the_o next_o world._n faith_n in_o christ_n and_o repentance_n a_o faith_n as_o purify_v the_o heart_n as_o conquer_v this_o present_a world_n as_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n such_o a_o repentance_n as_o reform_v our_o life_n as_o undo_v all_o our_o past_a sin_n as_o redress_n the_o injury_n we_o have_v do_v to_o our_o neighbour_n and_o the_o scandal_n we_o have_v give_v to_o the_o world_n such_o a_o faith_n and_o such_o a_o repentance_n which_o alone_o be_v the_o true_a christian_a grace_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v proper_a only_o for_o this_o life_n and_o can_v be_v exercise_v only_o in_o this_o life_n while_o we_o have_v this_o world_n to_o conquer_v and_o the_o flesh_n to_o subdue_v to_o the_o spirit_n while_o we_o can_v restore_v our_o ill-gotten_a riches_n and_o set_v a_o visible_a example_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n from_o hence_o it_o be_v very_o evident_a that_o no_o man_n who_o die_v in_o a_o state_n of_o sin_n and_o impenitence_n can_v be_v save_v by_o christ_n and_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o the_o next_o world_n for_o the_o whole_a ministration_n of_o gospel-grace_n be_v confine_v to_o this_o life_n and_o if_o they_o can_v be_v save_v by_o christ_n i_o know_v no_o other_o name_n whereby_o they_o can_v be_v save_v and_o thus_o death_n put_v a_o end_n to_o all_o the_o flatter_a hope_n of_o sinner_n 3._o now_o if_o this_o life_n be_v our_o only_a state_n of_o trial_n and_o probation_n for_o eternity_n if_o death_n put_v a_o final_a end_n to_o our_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o time_n of_o work_v than_o death_n must_v translate_v we_o to_o a_o
