secure_v a_o man_n from_o evil_a thought_n but_o in_o some_o sort_n make_v he_o the_o more_o obnoxious_a to_o they_o the_o devil_n will_v pay_v his_o unwelcome_a visit_n to_o we_o in_o our_o privacy_n as_o well_o as_o in_o conversation_n and_o the_o hermit_n in_o his_o cell_n have_v as_o much_o reason_n to_o look_v well_o to_o his_o thought_n as_o he_o that_o be_v in_o the_o crowd_n of_o this_o world_n and_o therefore_o i_o take_v it_o to_o be_v very_o advisable_v that_o at_o any_o time_n when_o we_o be_v alone_o we_o suffer_v not_o our_o thought_n to_o scatter_v and_o fly_v at_o random_n for_o unhappy_a conjunction_n oftentimes_o prove_v the_o consequence_n of_o such_o erratical_a motion_n but_o to_o confine_v they_o to_o some_o certain_a bound_n and_o determinate_a subject_n such_o as_o the_o power_n or_o goodness_n of_o almighty_a god_n or_o the_o like_a which_o will_v sweet_o employ_v our_o thought_n and_o refresh_v our_o mind_n and_o the_o more_o profitable_o to_o think_v on_o any_o such_o subject_n we_o may_v when_o we_o be_v alone_o likewise_o think_v on_o our_o own_o sinfulness_n be_v judge_v ourselves_o confess_v our_o sin_n and_o lay_v open_a our_o heart_n before_o god_n which_o will_v make_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n more_o illustrious_a and_o admirable_a and_o also_o keep_v we_o from_o be_v assault_v with_o any_o dreadful_a and_o terrify_v thought_n with_o any_o filthy_a and_o profligate_v thought_n and_o our_o heart_n from_o be_v deadn_v and_o stupefy_v with_o mopishness_n and_o drowsiness_n etc._n etc._n which_o at_o such_o a_o time_n we_o be_v more_o especial_o prone_a to_o again_o in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o entertain_v the_o good_a motion_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n to_o obey_v his_o heavenly_a inspiration_n to_o bow_v to_o his_o sacred_a suggestion_n when_o at_o any_o time_n we_o be_v bless_v therewith_o every_o good_a thought_n shall_v be_v make_v welcome_a and_o cherish_v and_o improve_v by_o we_o and_o by_o that_o mean_v we_o shall_v not_o only_o avoid_v evil_a thought_n but_o in_o time_n arrive_v at_o a_o happy_a temper_n and_o habit_n of_o good_a thought_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o desirable_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n and_o most_o of_o all_o prepare_v the_o soul_n for_o the_o purity_n and_o ravishment_n of_o the_o contemplation_n of_o god_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o heaven_n let_v we_o therefore_o always_o improve_v every_o good_a thought_n or_o motion_n that_o come_v into_o our_o mind_n and_o entertain_v it_o as_o a_o embassy_n from_o god_n as_o a_o spark_n of_o the_o celestial_a fire_n and_o let_v we_o diligent_o attend_v and_o listen_v to_o the_o counsel_n and_o monition_n of_o our_o own_o conscience_n by_o no_o mean_n resist_v their_o check_n or_o stifle_v spiritual_a guide_n for_o comfort_n and_o assistance_n when_o our_o heart_n be_v oppress_v with_o wicked_a thought_n or_o prevail_a corruption_n avoid_v unwarrantable_a curiosity_n and_o pry_v into_o hide_a mystery_n and_o unnecessary_a speculation_n contentment_n temperance_n humility_n trust_v and_o affiance_n in_o god_n and_o abundance_n more_o which_o be_v in_o that_o large_a field_n of_o discourse_n which_o such_o a_o subject_a as_o this_o afford_v and_o which_o if_o i_o shall_v enlarge_v upon_o as_o i_o have_v do_v on_o the_o former_a head_n will_v swell_v this_o treatise_n into_o a_o much_o big_a book_n than_o i_o design_v it_o i_o shall_v therefore_o content_v myself_o and_o the_o reader_n with_o these_o principal_a rule_n and_o direction_n for_o the_o well-governing_a of_o the_o thought_n in_o general_a which_o have_v be_v treat_v of_o in_o the_o foregoing_a page_n which_o well_o put_v in_o practice_n will_n i_o doubt_v not_o by_o the_o blessing_n of_o almighty_a god_n prove_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n effectual_a to_o the_o end_n design_v and_o that_o if_o we_o not_o slight_o and_o indifferent_o but_o close_o and_o in_o earnest_n apply_v ourselves_o to_o they_o of_o the_o last_o dreadful_a judgement_n consider_v serious_o with_o yourselves_o then_o that_o there_o be_v a_o day_n a_o come_n when_o not_o only_o all_o the_o action_n and_o more_o know_v passage_n by_o work_v on_o the_o humour_n of_o the_o body_n or_o stir_v up_o the_o animal_n spirit_n or_o by_o a_o immediate_a apply_v his_o suggestion_n to_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o so_o easy_a to_o be_v determine_v there_o be_v a_o necessary_a dependence_n of_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o soul_n upon_o the_o texture_n of_o the_o body_n and_o spirit_n it_o be_v not_o improbable_a that_o he_o frequent_o inject_n wicked_a thought_n that_o way_n but_o why_o may_v he_o not_o also_o cast_v in_o wicked_a thought_n into_o our_o heart_n by_o a_o immediate_a communication_n the_o truth_n be_v we_o prevent_v they_o and_o this_o can_v be_v full_o do_v neither_o in_o a_o treatise_n of_o this_o nature_n because_o their_o kind_n be_v infinite_a and_o their_o number_n endless_a i_o shall_v therefore_o according_a to_o my_o propose_a method_n consider_v in_o this_o chapter_n some_o special_a kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n and_o endeavour_v to_o apply_v remedy_n against_o they_o to_o the_o thought_n concern_v god_n as_o have_v be_v most_o unaccountable_a and_o as_o absurd_a as_o they_o be_v profane_a if_o i_o think_v fit_a i_o can_v mention_v some_o of_o they_o which_o have_v be_v so_o extravagant_a that_o i_o shall_v think_v to_o be_v rid_v of_o they_o it_o be_v better_a to_o contemn_v and_o despise_v they_o than_o anxious_o to_o be_v concern_v about_o they_o though_o with_o other_o of_o they_o we_o ought_v to_o deal_v after_o a_o different_a manner_n to_o think_v aright_o of_o almighty_a god_n and_o to_o have_v such_o idea_n of_o he_o in_o our_o mind_n as_o be_v worthy_a and_o become_v so_o great_a and_o so_o pure_a a_o majesty_n be_v not_o only_o a_o very_a considerable_a part_n of_o religion_n but_o a_o very_a comfortable_a thing_n and_o i_o can_v but_o pity_v any_o but_o the_o high_a conception_n that_o we_o be_v able_a of_o he_o god_n be_v in_o himself_o a_o infinite_a almighty_a and_o incomprehensible_a spirit_n and_o though_o he_o have_v sometime_o in_o the_o scripture_n describe_v and_o represent_v himself_o to_o we_o by_o material_a figure_n or_o sensible_a object_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o to_o think_v that_o he_o be_v real_o such_o as_o he_o be_v describe_v but_o that_o he_o condescend_v to_o our_o capacity_n by_o such_o a_o style_n and_o language_n and_o any_o other_o method_n of_o instruct_v we_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o himself_o will_v not_o be_v so_o intelligible_a to_o we_o god_n use_v this_o as_o a_o easy_a and_o familiar_a way_n of_o teach_v we_o to_o know_v he_o without_o which_o our_o notion_n of_o he_o will_v be_v very_o obscure_a and_o we_o can_v know_v but_o little_a of_o he_o and_o therefore_o i_o can_v but_o wonder_v at_o the_o imprudence_n and_o luciferian_a pride_n of_o such_o man_n who_o deny_v all_o mystery_n and_o pretend_v to_o know_v god_n so_o as_o perfect_o to_o comprehend_v he_o by_o the_o dim_a light_n of_o natural_a reason_n alone_o thus_o be_v god_n represent_v to_o we_o sometime_o as_o have_v hand_n foot_n eye_n and_o such_o like_a organical_a part_n not_o that_o he_o have_v true_o such_o as_o the_o old_a heretic_n the_o anthropomorphites_n hold_v and_o the_o romanist_n now_o depict_v he_o but_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v they_o in_o a_o figurative_a sense_n his_o hand_n and_o his_o foot_n betoken_v his_o power_n his_o eye_n his_o knowledge_n and_o favour_n etc._n etc._n and_o to_o make_v our_o thought_n of_o god_n vile_a and_o blasphemous_a the_o truth_n of_o this_o abundant_o appear_v from_o the_o various_a and_o monstrous_a idolatry_n of_o the_o gentile_a world_n and_o the_o gross_a and_o horrid_a conception_n they_o have_v of_o their_o deity_n and_o also_o from_o the_o idolatry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o that_o gross_a and_o carnal_a way_n of_o worship_n among_o they_o use_v especial_o in_o the_o dark_a age_n of_o popery_n when_o it_o be_v almost_o incredible_a to_o tell_v what_o absurdity_n and_o profaneness_n be_v the_o consequence_n of_o their_o ignorance_n nay_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v that_o even_o among_o ourselves_o some_o have_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n i_o speak_v this_o to_o your_o shame_n and_o until_o they_o
