second_o a_o change_n in_o quantity_n more_o strength_n then_o at_o their_o first_o conversion_n first_o i_o say_v there_o be_v a_o change_n in_o quality_n they_o that_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n shall_v renew_v their_o strength_n that_o be_v they_o shall_v have_v a_o new_a kind_n of_o strength_n bestow_v upon_o they_o over_o what_o they_o have_v before_o conversion_n as_o caleb_n have_v another_o spirit_n and_o saul_n another_o heart_n for_o we_o must_v know_v that_o even_o before_o conversion_n in_o natural_a and_o unregenerate_a person_n there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o strength_n which_o do_v appear_v in_o they_o and_o that_o also_o in_o reference_n to_o religion_n and_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o strength_n as_o be_v here_o mean_v in_o this_o present_a text_n nor_o yet_o such_o as_o any_o be_v to_o satisfy_v and_o to_o rest_v themselves_o content_v withal_o to_o explain_v it_o a_o little_a unto_o you_o you_o may_v take_v it_o in_o these_o particular_n first_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o temper_n and_o natural_a constitution_n second_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o custom_n and_o religious_a education_n three_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o civility_n and_o moral_a principle_n each_o of_o these_o kind_n of_o strength_n there_o be_v and_o that_o also_o before_o conversion_n first_o i_o say_v there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o temper_n and_o natural_a constitution_n this_o be_v such_o as_o may_v go_v very_o far_o and_o a_o man_n may_v be_v able_a both_o to_o do_v and_o suffer_v very_o much_o by_o it_o this_o be_v that_o which_o do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n extend_v itself_o to_o the_o outside_n and_o form_n of_o religion_n and_o in_o those_o performance_n which_o belong_v to_o that_o man_n by_o a_o natural_a strength_n may_v be_v very_o much_o in_o they_o whether_o a_o strength_n of_o bodily_a frame_n or_o a_o strength_n of_o natural_a part_n but_o it_o be_v not_o this_o which_o be_v sufficient_a and_o yet_o it_o be_v that_o which_o many_o rest_n themselves_o in_o and_o be_v content_v withal_o the_o strength_n of_o wit_n and_o reason_n and_o understanding_n and_o memory_n and_o the_o like_a while_o their_o heart_n and_o will_n and_o affection_n have_v no_o save_a work_n at_o all_o upon_o they_o second_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o custom_n and_o religious_a education_n this_o it_o will_v go_v very_o far_o likewise_o many_o which_o have_v be_v pious_o educate_v and_o bring_v up_o and_o accustom_v to_o such_o and_o such_o performance_n they_o through_o use_n and_o exercise_n contract_n some_o kind_n of_o strength_n to_o themselves_o for_o the_o do_v of_o they_o and_o become_v strong_a in_o the_o outward_a bulk_n of_o religion_n this_o be_v such_o preparation_n before_o he_o do_v they_o in_o the_o thing_n themselves_o and_o there_o be_v the_o warning_n of_o judgement_n before_o the_o accomplishment_n and_o consummation_n of_o it_o now_o a_o wise_a man_n he_o have_v regard_n to_o these_o which_o he_o take_v notice_n of_o a_o good_a christian_a he_o study_v providence_n he_o mark_v what_o god_n do_v in_o the_o world_n and_o for_o what_o end_n and_o purpose_n he_o do_v it_o and_o so_o thereby_o do_v satisfy_v himself_o as_o to_o the_o expectation_n of_o it_o and_o it_o be_v no_o strange_a matter_n to_o he_o then_o when_o it_o come_v one_o be_v not_o acquaint_v withal_o and_o that_o as_o in_o reference_n to_o god_n judgement_n and_o dispensation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o part_n of_o spiritual_a wisdom_n which_o be_v considerable_a in_o a_o christian_a namely_o this_o that_o to_o foresee_v the_o evil_n in_o reference_n to_o it_o the_o second_o be_v in_o reference_n to_o activity_n or_o practice_n and_o hide_v himself_o this_o must_v be_v join_v with_o the_o other_o or_o else_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n for_o any_o one_o to_o foresee_v evil_a and_o to_o rush_v into_o it_o for_o so_o it_o be_v no_o better_o for_o he_o than_o if_o he_o be_v whole_o ignorant_a of_o it_o but_o upon_o foresight_n of_o it_o to_o avoid_v it_o this_o a_o godly_a man_n do_v he_o improve_v his_o foresight_n and_o discovery_n of_o evil_n come_v on_o to_o his_o own_o safeguard_n and_o protection_n thus_o it_o be_v say_v of_o noah_n that_o be_v move_v with_o fear_n he_o prepare_v a_o ark_n he_o do_v not_o only_o fear_v and_o rest_v himself_o in_o that_o fear_n but_o his_o fear_n put_v he_o upon_o preparation_n and_o provision_n against_o the_o eminent_a danger_n or_o that_o which_o be_v fore-seen_a by_o he_o and_o so_o it_o be_v also_o with_o every_o good_a christian_a as_o he_o have_v wisdom_n to_o preapprehend_v evil_a so_o he_o have_v care_n likewise_o to_o prevent_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o from_o himself_o this_o be_v signify_v in_o this_o expression_n of_o hide_v which_o imply_v a_o endeavour_n to_o escape_v the_o danger_n which_o be_v fore-seen_a it_o be_v that_o which_o we_o often_o meet_v withal_o in_o scripture_n the_o saint_n hide_v of_o themselves_o against_o time_n of_o trouble_n especial_o in_o the_o book_n of_o psalm_n it_o be_v that_o which_o david_n make_v mention_n of_o again_o and_o again_o of_o god_n hide_v of_o he_o and_o of_o his_o hide_v himself_o with_o god_n we_o can_v hardly_o turn_v a_o leaf_n but_o we_o find_v it_o he_o make_v mention_n of_o it_o upon_o all_o occasion_n now_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v here_o also_o signify_v to_o be_v the_o property_n of_o every_o other_o beleiver_n even_o to_o hide_v himself_o in_o such_o time_n as_o these_o be_v if_o we_o will_v know_v how_o this_o be_v do_v i_o answer_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o all_o such_o grace_n as_o be_v pertinent_a hereunto_o as_o first_o of_o all_o meekness_n and_o humility_n that_o be_v a_o hiding-grace_n a_o grace_n which_o keep_v man_n safe_a from_o a_o storm_n proud_a and_o lofty_a person_n they_o be_v liketree_n expose_v to_o wind_n and_o weather_n but_o apostle_n express_v it_o in_o rom._n 5.20_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o point_n be_v matter_n of_o singular_a comfort_n to_o all_o such_o person_n as_o be_v humble_v and_o break_v in_o heart_n and_o lie_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o be_v willing_a to_o leave_v and_o forsake_v they_o and_o in_o good_a earnest_n to_o quit_v themselves_o of_o they_o here_o be_v grace_n great_a sin_n of_o all_o a_o devilish_a and_o hellish_a sin_n and_o such_o as_o be_v worse_a than_o any_o other_o which_o be_v there_o make_v the_o occasion_n of_o it_o because_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o the_o sweet_a bowel_n of_o god_n and_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o the_o gospel_n which_o he_o desire_v to_o extol_v and_o magnify_v above_o all_o other_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n therefore_o by_o all_o mean_n take_v heed_n of_o it_o and_o withdraw_v from_o it_o remember_v to_o observe_v the_o condition_n and_o thou_o may_v undoubted_o expect_v the_o promise_n to_o be_v accomplish_v and_o make_v good_a unto_o thou_o though_o thy_o sin_n be_v many_o though_o they_o be_v great_a though_o they_o be_v repeat_v again_o and_o again_o yet_o at_o last_o whole_o leave_v and_o renounce_v there_o be_v mercy_n for_o they_o god_n look_v not_o so_o much_o at_o the_o greatness_n of_o thy_o sin_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n as_o rather_o at_o thy_o affection_n to_o it_o that_o pardon_v therefore_o let_v the_o wicked_a forsake_v his_o evil_a way_n and_o so_o there_o be_v this_o in_o it_o that_o god_n mercy_n be_v a_o special_a argument_n and_o motive_n for_o man_n reformation_n because_o he_o be_v so_o ready_a to_o forgive_v sin_n therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v as_o ready_a to_o forsake_v it_o thus_o the_o scripture_n still_o set_v it_o as_o in_o psal_n 130.4_o and_o it_o hold_v upon_o this_o account_n because_o here_o now_o we_o see_v that_o our_o labour_n be_v not_o in_o vain_a if_o a_o man_n may_v repent_v and_o turn_v to_o god_n and_o for_o all_o that_o god_n will_v show_v he_o no_o mercy_n he_o be_v still_o but_o in_o the_o same_o case_n as_o before_o and_o may_v be_v ready_a to_o think_v with_o himself_o that_o he_o have_v as_o good_a go_v on_o in_o his_o sin_n still_o and_o enjoy_v the_o present_a delight_n and_o sweetness_n of_o they_o but_o now_o when_o he_o hear_v that_o upon_o his_o repentance_n god_n will_v forgive_v he_o this_o carnal_a objection_n be_v remove_v and_o take_v off_o from_o he_o and_o then_o it_o hold_v also_o in_o a_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n and_o ingenuity_n in_o answer_n to_o god_n goodness_n see_v god_n be_v ready_a to_o do_v so_o much_o for_o we_o as_o to_o pardon_v our_o sin_n so_o we_o shall_v be_v ready_a to_o do_v so_o much_o for_o he_o as_o to_o remove_v our_o sin_n from_o we_o therefore_o let_v we_o according_o make_v this_o use_n and_o improvement_n of_o it_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o abuse_v such_o a_o sweet_a truth_n as_o this_o and_o so_o turn_v god_n grace_n into_o wantonness_n as_o many_o sometime_o be_v subject_a to_o do_v for_o god_n will_v be_v sure_a not_o to_o hold_v we_o guiltless_a if_o we_o do_v so_o whosoever_o shall_v commit_v any_o sin_n with_o these_o thought_n of_o presume_v on_o god_n mercy_n without_o repentance_n he_o do_v so_o far_o forth_o deptive_a himself_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o this_o present_a doctrine_n which_o still_o suppose_v the_o renounce_v of_o sin_n as_o the_o condition_n annex_v to_o the_o promise_n carnal_a and_o corrupt_a person_n they_o pull_v this_o text_n asunder_o which_o be_v to_o be_v take_v still_o in_o its_o connexion_n they_o be_v for_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o it_o only_o where_o it_o be_v say_v god_n will_v have_v mercy_n and_o will_v abundant_o pardon_v but_o they_o be_v not_o for_o the_o formre_a part_n of_o it_o where_o the_o wicked_a be_v require_v to_o forsake_v his_o evil_a way_n now_o the_o one_o be_v of_o noforce_v without_o the_o other_o that_o so_o as_o man_n may_v not_o despair_v so_o they_o may_v not_o presume_v and_o as_o they_o may_v not_o deny_v god_n mercy_n so_o they_o may_v not_o retain_v their_o own_o iniquity_n but_o rather_o search_v and_o examine_v their_o heart_n in_o such_o case_n as_o these_o be_v and_o observe_v god_n deal_n with_o they_o who_o oftentimes_o suffer_v they_o to_o fall_v into_o great_a sin_n for_o the_o punish_n of_o their_o neglect_n of_o small_a and_o that_o also_o occasional_o
behind_o we_o say_v this_o be_v the_o way_n walk_v you_o in_o it_o when_o we_o turn_v either_o to_o the_o right_a hand_n or_o to_o the_o left_a but_o now_o far_o if_o we_o please_v we_o may_v take_v these_o word_n a_o little_a more_o at_o large_a as_o i_o in_o part_n hint_v before_o when_o you_o turn_v to_o the_o right_a hand_n or_o to_o the_o left_a not_o as_o touch_v it_o of_o two_o extreme_n but_o in_o reference_n to_o all_o the_o passage_n of_o our_o life_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v when_o you_o turn_v to_o the_o right_a hand_n or_o to_o the_o left_a that_o be_v whatsoever_o place_n you_o be_v in_o whatever_o business_n you_o be_v about_o whatever_o condition_n befall_v you_o you_o shall_v have_v the_o hint_n of_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n assistant_n to_o you_o this_o be_v the_o promise_n which_o be_v make_v to_o the_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n and_o it_o be_v make_v not_o only_o here_o in_o this_o text_n but_o also_o in_o divers_a other_o place_n beside_o as_o psal_n 37.5_o commit_v thy_o way_n unto_o the_o lord_n trust_v also_o in_o he_o and_o he_o shall_v bring_v it_o to_o pass_v so_o prov._n 3.6_o in_o all_o thy_o way_n acknowledge_v he_o and_o he_o shall_v direct_v thy_o path_n so_o again_o in_o prov._n 16.3_o commit_v thy_o work_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o thy_o thought_n shall_v be_v establish_v this_o disposition_n in_o god_n towards_o his_o people_n be_v found_v on_o his_o affection_n to_o they_o he_o love_v they_o and_o therefore_o he_o counsel_n they_o and_o can_v abide_v to_o see_v they_o miscarry_v love_v it_o be_v full_a of_o be_v some_o comfort_n to_o he_o this_o be_v the_o lord_n to_o his_o servant_n he_o teach_v they_o to_o go_v take_v they_o by_o the_o hand_n as_o it_o in_o hos_n 11.3_o oh_o how_o much_o shall_v we_o some_o default_n or_o miscarriage_n in_o they_o in_o which_o case_n it_o may_v be_v suspend_v to_o they_o that_o they_o shall_v hear_v a_o word_n behind_o they_o say_v this_o be_v the_o way_n walk_v in_o it_o when_o they_o turn_v etc._n etc._n but_o here_o it_o may_v partinent_o be_v demand_v how_o this_o word_n shall_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v because_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o deceit_n and_o mistake_n in_o the_o particular_n many_o take_v that_o to_o be_v the_o word_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o be_v no_o more_o but_o their_o own_o foolish_a fancy_n and_o the_o suggestion_n and_o intimation_n of_o the_o devil_n join_v with_o their_o own_o corrupt_a heart_n it_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o many_o people_n now_o in_o these_o present_a day_n and_o never_o more_o than_o now_o it_o be_v for_o this_o there_o be_v divers_a touchstone_n and_o discovery_n of_o it_o which_o we_o will_v brief_o instance_n in_o first_o let_v this_o within_o thou_o be_v regulate_v by_o the_o word_n without_o thou_o and_o the_o motion_n and_o suggestion_n of_o the_o spirit_n examine_v by_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n to_o god_n undertake_v and_o set_v himself_o to_o it_o because_o his_o spirit_n it_o do_v effect_v whatsoever_o he_o please_v who_o have_v gather_v the_o wind_n in_o his_o fist_n as_o agur_n make_v the_o question_n in_o prov._n 30.4_o sure_o it_o be_v not_o man_n but_o god_n look_v as_o no_o man_n can_v hinder_v the_o wind_n or_o stop_v the_o blowing_n and_o motion_n thereof_o so_o neither_o can_v any_o man_n hinder_v the_o spirit_n and_o stop_v the_o motion_n and_o influence_n thereof_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o prove_v effectual_a this_o be_v a_o comfortable_a point_n in_o all_o contrary_a they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v desperate_o conclude_v but_o they_o have_v now_o and_o then_o some_o kind_n of_o stir_n and_o working_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n move_v in_o their_o conscience_n whereby_o he_o divert_v they_o from_o evil_a and_o put_v they_o on_o to_o the_o do_v of_o good_a and_o it_o concern_v such_o as_o these_o according_o to_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o follow_v those_o motion_n and_o suggestion_n which_o be_v thus_o offer_v and_o tender_v unto_o they_o yea_o but_o now_o as_o for_o the_o child_n of_o god_n which_o be_v regenerate_v and_o bear_v
