&_o in_o their_o sense_n for_o these_o word_n be_v in_o hebrew_n thus_o even_o or_o either_o love_n even_o or_o either_o hatred_n know_v not_o man_n all_o which_o be_v before_o their_o face_n whereas_o we_o may_v perceive_v in_o their_o translation_n they_o add_v the_o word_n worthy_a which_o be_v not_o there_o to_o be_v find_v and_o in_o their_o interpretation_n or_o sense_n they_o add_v god_n and_o his_o favour_n or_o hatred_n there_o be_v not_o in_o this_o part_n of_o the_o text_n any_o of_o the_o name_n whereby_o god_n be_v call_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n but_o before_o we_o come_v to_o deliver_v that_o which_o we_o take_v to_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o spirit_n here_o i_o think_v that_o even_o the_o text_n as_o they_o turn_v it_o will_v not_o evince_v that_o for_o which_o they_o allege_v it_o for_o though_o we_o shall_v grant_v they_o that_o love_n and_o hatred_n shall_v in_o this_o place_n be_v understand_v of_o god_n love_n &_o hatred_n towards_o man_n yet_o this_o i_o think_v we_o may_v say_v of_o it_o namely_o that_o we_o must_v needs_o understand_v it_o either_o of_o man_n that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n word_n and_o unbeliever_n or_o else_o of_o his_o love_n and_o hatred_n towards_o such_o as_o of_o who_o faith_n we_o doubt_v not_o for_o between_o these_o two_o there_o be_v no_o mean_a neither_o be_v there_o any_o other_o sort_n of_o people_n in_o the_o world_n to_o refer_v it_o to_o the_o incredulous_a &_o to_o understand_v it_o of_o they_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n because_o he_o that_o can_v lie_v have_v tell_v we_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v conden_v already_o because_o he_o believe_v not_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o only_a son_n of_o god_n &_o since_o he_o have_v give_v the_o judgement_n we_o judge_v not_o according_a to_o ourselves_o but_o according_a to_o his_o truth_n that_o can_v err_v and_o beside_o he_o that_o beleve_v not_o the_o gospel_n as_o he_o know_v not_o god_n himself_o with_o effect_n and_o fruit_n so_o he_o know_v not_o neither_o for_o himself_o nor_o for_o other_o those_o who_o god_n love_v or_o hate_v or_o of_o what_o force_n his_o love_n and_o hatred_n be_v we_o must_v therefore_o understand_v of_o the_o faithful_a &_o believer_n who_o though_o they_o can_v judge_v of_o other_o man_n special_o by_o their_o outward_a estate_n of_o which_o it_o seem_v solomon_n speak_v here_o whether_o god_n love_v any_o man_n or_o hate_v he_o yet_o concern_v himself_o or_o for_o god_n love_n or_o hatred_n towards_o he_o he_o can_v either_o be_v ignorant_a or_o doubtful_a of_o it_o because_o he_o know_v and_o feel_v the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o as_o a_o adopt_a child_n and_o that_o by_o better_a proof_n and_o pledge_n then_o outward_a mercy_n as_o we_o may_v perceive_v not_o only_o by_o the_o 7._o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n where_o he_o say_v go_v eat_v thy_o bread_n with_o joy_n etc._n etc._n for_o god_n now_o accept_v thy_o work_n but_o also_o by_o this_o of_o john_n in_o his_o first_o epistle_n four_o chapter_n herein_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n make_v manifest_a among_o we_o because_o god_n send_v that_o his_o only_o beget_v son_n into_o the_o true_a and_o natural_a meaning_n and_o see_v whether_o that_o will_v help_v any_o whit_n at_o all_o i_o know_v that_o both_o jew_n and_o christian_a expositor_n also_o do_v give_v diverse_a not_o only_o declare_v the_o judgement_n of_o flesh_n &_o blood_n concern_v the_o person_n themselves_o but_o also_o express_v what_o he_o himself_o conceive_v of_o it_o according_a to_o truth_n and_o no_o more_o now_o after_o the_o flesh_n no_o not_o christ_n jesus_n and_o when_o they_o be_v at_o the_o best_a and_o high_a they_o be_v rather_o argument_n of_o persuasion_n to_o lead_v man_n to_o do_v the_o like_a then_o sound_a &_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o prove_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o be_v allege_v but_o we_o will_v let_v this_o also_o go_v &_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v of_o more_o weight_n and_o importance_n as_o for_o this_o argument_n if_o we_o know_v or_o understand_v right_o what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v by_o these_o word_n it_o be_v or_o will_v be_v easy_o absolve_v for_o the_o knot_n be_v not_o so_o hard_o twist_v or_o tie_v as_o they_o imagine_v it_o seem_v unto_o man_n that_o as_o verse_n 1._o of_o the_o 4._o chap._n he_o have_v put_v the_o people_n in_o mind_n of_o their_o duty_n towards_o their_o minister_n namely_o that_o though_o they_o may_v not_o account_v they_o lord_n and_o ruler_n yet_o they_o shall_v esteem_v they_o as_o such_o who_o christ_n have_v send_v even_o by_o their_o hand_n to_o deliver_v unto_o they_o the_o treasure_n &_o hide_a secret_n of_o god_n kingdom_n and_o salvation_n so_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o have_v tell_v the_o minister_n &_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n what_o be_v their_o duty_n namely_o that_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o their_o charge_n they_o shall_v carry_v themselves_o not_o as_o lord_n but_o as_o servant_n yea_o as_o faithful_a servant_n who_o must_v one_o day_n render_v a_o account_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o because_o he_o judge_v of_o learning_n and_o wisdom_n or_o of_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n &_o this_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o verse_n 3._o the_o second_o be_v take_v from_o his_o own_o person_n and_o they_o together_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v how_o be_v you_o able_a to_o judge_v what_o manner_n of_o man_n i_o be_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o my_o ministry_n since_o i_o myself_o who_o by_o all_o probability_n shall_v in_o that_o behalf_n better_o know_v myself_o than_o you_o can_v yea_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n can_v testify_v before_o god_n and_o man_n that_o in_o that_o charge_n i_o have_v in_o some_o good_a measure_n upright_o behave_v myself_o dare_v not_o yet_o therefore_o arrogate_v any_o thing_n to_o myself_o for_o i_o know_v that_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o for_o this_o 4._o verse_n what_o be_v here_o against_o the_o certainty_n of_o paul_n justification_n before_o god_n or_o the_o assurednes_n of_o his_o heart_n as_o in_o that_o respect_n he_o show_v they_o can_v not_o judge_v he_o because_o he_o himself_o be_v not_o able_a thorough_o and_o exact_o to_o discern_v himself_o must_v he_o therefore_o doubt_v of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o salvation_n before_o god_n sure_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v for_o first_o beside_o that_o god_n and_o man_n differ_v it_o be_v not_o safe_a to_o infer_v upon_o a_o godly_a man_n debase_v of_o himself_o for_o some_o respect_n before_o man_n his_o doubt_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n or_o his_o distrustfulness_n of_o his_o mercy_n towards_o he_o many_o a_o man_n debase_v himself_o before_o god_n and_o yet_o have_v hope_n in_o his_o heart_n yea_o the_o more_o for_o that_o because_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a &_o presumptuous_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o lowly_a and_o meek_a as_o the_o scripture_n say_v and_o though_o we_o shall_v understand_v it_o of_o justification_n before_o god_n yet_o other_o place_n of_o scripture_n and_o some_o thing_n in_o this_o for_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o contrary_a to_o itself_o shall_v declare_v it_o for_o sure_o the_o apostle_n here_o doubt_v not_o whether_o the_o newene_n of_o life_n &_o good_a work_n which_o he_o be_v renew_v have_v do_v be_v seal_n &_o pledge_n unto_o he_o of_o this_o that_o he_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n but_o plain_o &_o simple_o deni_v that_o by_o they_o he_o be_v justify_v which_o as_o we_o may_v confirm_v by_o a_o other_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n phil._n 3._o when_o he_o say_v that_o he_o have_v no_o confidence_n in_o the_o flesh_n &_o that_o if_o any_o other_o man_n think_v he_o have_v aught_o whereof_o he_o may_v trust_v in_o the_o flesh_n much_o more_o he_o who_o touch_v the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o the_o law_n be_v unrebukeable_a some_o think_v it_o stand_v upon_o religious_a reason_n because_o all_o our_o righteousness_n be_v as_o filthy_a and_o stain_a clothes_n and_o when_o we_o have_v do_v all_o that_o we_o can_v do_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a seruamt_n so_o many_o defect_n yea_o corruption_n cleave_v unto_o our_o best_a and_o most_o religious_a duty_n as_o we_o perform_v they_o yea_o it_o shall_v seem_v that_o he_o in_o this_o very_a place_n render_v a_o reason_n of_o it_o because_o that_o though_o he_o be_v unblameable_a before_o man_n yet_o he_o can_v not_o by_o his_o work_n stand_v before_o god_n judgement_n or_o god_n himself_o who_o require_v such_o perfect_a obedience_n that_o if_o a_o man_n perform_v not_o all_o thing_n command_v in_o his_o law_n he_o subiect_v he_o to_o the_o curse_n thereof_o or_o as_o saint_n jeame_n say_v chap._n 2._o he_o that_o offend_v in_o one_o be_v guilty_a of_o they_o all_o and_o so_o if_o you_o will_v needs_o understand_v it_o of_o this_o justification_n the_o apostle_n show_v that_o he_o have_v need_n of_o another_o righteousness_n than_o his_o own_o namely_o the_o absolute_a and_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o christ_n the_o mediator_n which_o he_o may_v safe_o oppose_v against_o god_n wrath_n that_o justifi_v who_o shall_v condemn_v so_o that_o we_o see_v &_o may_v say_v that_o take_v it_o which_o way_n they_o will_v or_o can_v it_o can_v not_o or_o will_v not_o in_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o spirit_n speak_v that_o they_o will_v have_v it_o or_o prove_v that_o for_o which_o they_o produce_v it_o 5_o a_o five_o argument_n they_o frame_v thus_o we_o be_v uncerten_a say_v they_o concern_v predestination_n or_o election_n that_o be_v as_o they_o themselves_o expound_v it_o or_o must_v expound_v it_o we_o can_v out_o of_o god_n word_n show_v who_o god_n have_v choose_v unto_o himself_o unless_o beside_o and_o without_o the_o word_n

corruption_n of_o that_o excellent_a nature_n which_o by_o creation_n be_v infuse_v into_o our_o first_o parent_n and_o in_o they_o to_o all_o their_o posterity_n have_v they_o continue_v therein_o because_o we_o be_v all_o in_o their_o loin_n to_o have_v be_v partaker_n of_o their_o excellent_a grace_n by_o creation_n as_o well_o as_o we_o be_v of_o their_o sin_n by_o transgression_n man_n do_v doubt_n of_o god_n his_o goodness_n etc._n etc._n and_o though_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o man_n natural_a or_o faculty_n or_o power_n that_o they_o have_v in_o they_o as_o of_o they_o we_o acknowledge_v it_o impossible_a to_o alter_v or_o change_v this_o doubt_v and_o distrustfulness_n yet_o by_o god_n to_o who_o all_o thing_n be_v possible_a and_o by_o his_o singular_a help_n aid_n and_o grace_n it_o be_v not_o only_o in_o his_o own_o people_n much_o alter_v in_o this_o life_n though_o the_o work_n be_v wrought_v by_o little_a and_o little_a and_o as_o it_o be_v by_o certain_a in_o absolutenes_n and_o perfection_n not_o because_o he_o be_v not_o able_a here_o to_o do_v it_o for_o what_o be_v he_o not_o able_a to_o perform_v to_o show_v what_o hindrance_n we_o have_v in_o ourselves_o against_o his_o gracious_a work_n partly_o from_o ourselves_o and_o partly_o from_o satan_n malice_n and_o also_o that_o he_o may_v instruct_v we_o with_o holy_a desire_n to_o hunger_n what_o they_o can_v and_o higge_n and_o wrestle_v with_o their_o doubt_v by_o set_v against_o the_o same_o holy_a and_o heavenly_a thought_n of_o god_n free_a grace_n &_o gracious_a promise_n as_o also_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n provoke_v they_o as_o they_o be_v regenerate_v to_o many_o good_a work_n and_o particular_o to_o prayer_n by_o mean_n whereof_o that_o which_o be_v faint_a and_o weak_a in_o and_o of_o themselves_o may_v be_v strengthen_v as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o father_n of_o the_o possess_a child_n mark_n 9_o lord_n i_o corruption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n for_o as_o though_o that_o which_o they_o have_v say_v already_o have_v not_o be_v miry_a and_o filthy_a enough_o they_o yet_o urge_v more_o clay_n and_o dongue_z draw_v out_o of_o the_o beastly_a puddle_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n thus_o therefore_o they_o yet_o press_v and_o urge_v this_o point_n natural_a thing_n that_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o we_o have_v natural_o in_o our_o mind_n be_v not_o sin_n but_o doubt_v be_v natural_a therefore_o it_o be_v not_o sin_n we_o answer_v to_o the_o proposition_n or_o mayor_n by_o distinguish_v natural_a thing_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n that_o be_v either_o such_o as_o we_o have_v first_o from_o god_n by_o creation_n &_o remain_v some_o of_o they_o in_o we_o as_o yet_o untainted_a be_v not_o sin_n as_o account_v simple_o sin_n or_o evil_n but_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n now_o count_v natural_a which_o have_v both_o come_v upon_o &_o prevail_v upon_o the_o purity_n of_o our_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v in_o creation_n as_o for_o example_n ignorance_n in_o steed_n of_o our_o knowledge_n doubt_v or_o distrustfulnes_n in_o stead_n of_o our_o hope_n etc._n etc._n and_o these_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v evil_a for_o even_o as_o our_o creation_n and_o all_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v therein_o come_v from_o god_n make_v we_o to_o be_v denominate_v good_a because_o nothing_o can_v come_v from_o he_o but_o that_o which_o be_v good_a so_o these_o proceed_n from_o a_o contrary_a fountain_n that_o be_v satan_n and_o his_o malice_n can_v choose_v but_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o he_o be_v of_o that_o be_v evil_a &_o sinful_a and_o therefore_o concern_v doubt_v say_v that_o it_o be_v natural_a indeed_o but_o not_o as_o from_o our_o first_o creation_n for_o than_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v good_a but_o come_v unto_o our_o nature_n after_o the_o fall_n and_o so_o be_v deprave_a be_v evil_a special_o when_o it_o be_v refer_v to_o god_n as_o in_o all_o this_o question_n it_o be_v for_o though_o when_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o man_n special_o such_o as_o who_o for_o their_o waywardness_n inconstancy_n &_o other_o corruption_n that_o we_o ourselves_o have_v have_v concern_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n or_o the_o save_n of_o our_o soul_n or_o concern_v any_o other_o grace_n whatsoever_o and_o approove_v not_o of_o doubt_v at_o any_o hand_n the_o the_o same_o but_o the_o promise_n be_v spiritual_a and_o from_o god_n and_o so_o be_v faith_n in_o we_o and_o not_o doubt_v for_o that_o be_v from_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o own_o nature_n which_o have_v no_o acquaintance_n with_o god_n or_o goodness_n till_o it_o be_v alter_v and_o change_v from_o above_o and_o therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o conclude_v and_o say_v establish_z god_n promise_v or_o faith_n be_v establish_v and_o put_v doubt_v on_o god_n promise_n be_v evacuate_v for_o therefore_o be_v it_o of_o faith_n as_o be_v say_v before_o out_o of_o rom._n 4._o that_o the_o promise_n may_v be_v sure_a then_o if_o it_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n but_o of_o doubt_v the_o promise_n be_v not_o firm_a or_o sure_a to_o wit_n to_o we_o though_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o itself_o and_o god_n the_o giver_n of_o it_o it_o be_v always_o certain_a and_o this_o be_v that_o also_o which_o i_o think_v saint_n john_n mean_v when_o he_o say_v he_o that_o believe_v not_o god_n as_o he_o have_v reveal_v himself_o in_o his_o word_n and_o special_o in_o his_o promise_n have_v make_v he_o a_o liar_n because_o he_o believe_v not_o the_o record_n that_o god_n witness_v of_o that_o his_o son_n but_o against_o this_o our_o popish_a adversary_n put_v many_o exception_n as_o first_o they_o say_v that_o man_n must_v doubt_v not_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n promise_n but_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o own_o indignity_n or_o unworthiness_n because_o we_o be_v worthy_a to_o obtain_v or_o have_v that_o which_o god_n have_v promise_v for_o it_o may_v so_o fall_v out_o that_o because_o a_o man_n have_v fail_v in_o the_o condition_n annex_v to_o god_n promise_n he_o may_v right_o doubt_v whether_o he_o shall_v have_v that_o which_o god_n have_v promise_v that_o be_v to_o say_v man_n shall_v not_o doubt_v whether_o god_n will_v fail_v in_o accomplish_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o promise_v make_v unto_o we_o but_o lest_o we_o perform_v not_o the_o condition_n adjoin_v thereto_o because_o god_n have_v not_o promise_v eternal_a life_n nor_o any_o thing_n else_o but_o under_o condition_n or_o else_o they_o mean_v that_o doubt_n be_v not_o to_o be_v refer_v to_o god_n promise_v but_o to_o our_o defect_n and_o the_o impediment_n of_o our_o infirmity_n least_o happy_o we_o want_v the_o accomplishment_n of_o the_o condition_n join_v with_o god_n promise_n this_o be_v their_o exception_n but_o we_o answer_v that_o both_o their_o affirmation_n in_o their_o exception_n and_o their_o explanation_n of_o it_o also_o for_o of_o these_o two_o part_n do_v it_o consist_v be_v stark_o nought_o for_o whatsoever_o they_o say_v or_o howsoever_o they_o interpret_v their_o own_o speech_n yet_o if_o they_o enjoin_v and_o teach_v man_n to_o doubt_v whether_o god_n for_o christ_n sake_n will_v be_v merciful_a to_o such_o as_o believe_v in_o he_o they_o appoint_v or_o instruct_v they_o to_o doubt_v of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n because_o god_n grace_n christ_n merit_n man_n faith_n be_v god_n work_v in_o we_o be_v not_o nor_o can_v be_v disjoin_v which_o they_o be_v if_o man_n doubt_v or_o do_v teach_v other_o to_o doubt_n of_o all_o or_o of_o any_o of_o they_o special_o if_o that_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v be_v receive_v but_o we_o will_v more_o particular_o look_v into_o the_o word_n and_o matter_n of_o this_o exception_n they_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o doubt_v as_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n promise_n &_o who_o will_v doubt_v of_o that_o or_o think_v or_o say_v so_o unless_o he_o be_v some_o notable_a atheist_n or_o blasphemer_n who_o for_o his_o thought_n but_o word_n especial_o shall_v rather_o have_v his_o tongue_n pull_v out_o of_o his_o head_n and_o be_v just_o execute_v by_o death_n then_o be_v suffer_v to_o live_v among_o man_n but_o that_o we_o shall_v doubt_v of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n because_o we_o be_v unworthy_a to_o obtain_v or_o to_o have_v accomplish_v god_n promise_n unto_o we_o that_o we_o be_v indeed_o utter_o and_o altogether_o unworthy_a of_o all_o or_o any_o good_a thing_n from_o god_n no_o godly_a man_n i_o think_v will_v deny_v nay_o and_o if_o it_o will_v pleasure_v our_o adversasary_n we_o will_v grant_v they_o more_o than_o that_o namely_o that_o we_o be_v worthy_a of_o all_o punishment_n both_o temporal_a and_o eternal_a in_o body_n and_o soul_n howbeit_o this_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o because_o we_o be_v unworthy_a of_o the_o grace_n god_n shall_v not_o bestow_v his_o mercy_n and_o grace_n where_o as_o please_v he_o or_o this_o that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v not_o doubt_v the_o hand_n of_o faith_n lie_v sure_o hold_v of_o those_o spiritual_a grace_n that_o god_n in_o the_o sacrament_n mean_v to_o offer_v &_o by_o those_o outward_a and_o visible_a sign_n and_o element_n and_o action_n use_v in_o and_o about_o they_o he_o mean_v more_o and_o more_o to_o confirm_v our_o heart_n but_o this_o certainty_n and_o comfort_n that_o be_v aforesaid_a in_o sort_n and_o sense_n be_v contain_v in_o the_o sacrament_n this_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v that_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o romish_a synagogue_n do_v not_o only_o weaken_v it_o but_o labour_v if_o not_o by_o violence_n unto_o we_o in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o propound_v in_o many_o place_n of_o the_o gospel_n take_v one_o for_o all_o namely_o luke_n 44._o where_o it_o be_v say_v that_o repentance_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n shall_v be_v preach_v in_o christ_n name_n among_o all_o nation_n but_o this_o doctrine_n of_o our_o adversary_n fighteh_n direct_o against_o it_o for_o shall_v we_o say_v we_o be_v credit_v what_o be_v it_o to_o believe_v the_o forgiune_n of_o sin_n namely_o to_o be_v well_o assure_v of_o this_o that_o that_o grace_n be_v not_o only_o impute_v unto_o other_o but_o unto_o they_o also_o and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n also_o why_o we_o say_v i_o believe_v and_o why_o the_o spirit_n tell_v we_o the_o just_a shall_v live_v by_o his_o own_o faith_n for_o though_o i_o may_v yea_o ought_v to_o be_v well_o persuade_v as_o of_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o church_n so_o of_o every_o several_a sound_n member_n thereof_o that_o all_o the_o grace_n that_o god_n have_v rare_o appear_v or_o be_v see_v what_o then_o satan_n grant_v that_o my_o faith_n and_o good_a work_n be_v faint_a and_o few_o in_o i_o will_v thou_o infer_v that_o therefore_o i_o have_v none_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v not_o provide_v always_o that_o that_o which_o they_o have_v they_o have_v it_o from_o he_o or_o else_o how_o can_v the_o church_n &_o member_n of_o it_o rejoice_v or_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o do_v and_o from_o hence_o be_v it_o indeed_o that_o we_o learn_v notwithstanding_o weakness_n &_o want_n either_o in_o whole_a congregation_n or_o several_a member_n not_o to_o break_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o band_n of_o peace_n nor_o to_o forsake_v the_o fellowship_n of_o the_o brethren_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o church_n as_o the_o manner_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o n_o holy_a wisdom_n and_o power_n from_o above_o to_o put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o our_o persuasion_n but_o in_o our_o practice_n not_o forsake_v the_o good_a of_o our_o god_n for_o some_o evil_n or_o corruption_n of_o man_n adjoin_v therewithal_o nor_o yet_o for_o the_o good_n sake_n justify_v or_o approve_v the_o evil_a and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o sufficient_a yet_o we_o have_v further_a prop_n to_o our_o faith_n here_o namely_o first_o that_o though_o our_o faith_n be_v weak_a and_o faint_a yet_o be_v it_o true_a and_o sound_a for_o even_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v infirm_a and_o weak_a may_v yet_o notwitstanding_n be_v true_a &_o right_a the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o not_o weak_a faith_n and_o true_a faith_n be_v opposite_a but_o weak_a faith_n and_o no_o faith_n and_o this_o we_o may_v see_v also_o by_o the_o worthy_a speech_n of_o the_o father_n of_o the_o sick_a child_n in_o the_o gospel_n lord_n i_o believe_v but_o help_v thou_o my_o unbelief_n this_o weakness_n &_o imperfection_n our_o faith_n not_o come_v from_o itself_o nor_o be_v in_o itself_o as_o of_o itself_o for_o so_o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a and_o a_o absolute_a work_n of_o god_n but_o as_o it_o be_v &_o in_o other_o direct_o stand_v up_o against_o the_o same_o to_o take_v one_o or_o two_o of_o they_o that_o so_o by_o they_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o rest_n what_o man_n that_o know_v or_o translation_n as_o i_o suppose_v though_o i_o shall_v be_v simple_a my_o soul_n shall_v be_v ignorant_a of_o this_o matter_n wherein_o first_o we_o blame_v they_o for_o their_o bad_a translation_n theophilactus_fw-la who_o turn_v the_o simple_a verb_n that_o the_o apostle_n use_v by_o a_o compound_n which_o signify_v by_o reason_v to_o evince_v together_o and_o out_o of_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v not_o only_o probable_o but_o true_o put_v down_o necessary_o to_o effect_v and_o conclude_v but_o suppose_v we_o have_v not_o this_o in_o just_a and_o sufficient_a answer_n yet_o we_o know_v and_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o doubt_v and_o think_v the_o one_o always_o contain_v in_o it_o and_o under_o it_o uncertainty_n and_o the_o other_o many_o time_n have_v certainty_n adjoin_v with_o it_o for_o though_o we_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o sometime_o in_o the_o latin_a tongue_n the_o word_n to_o think_v be_v doubt_o use_v yet_o we_o shall_v nature_n of_o the_o greek_a word_n above_o mention_v so_o i_o think_v it_o be_v confirm_v by_o the_o weight_n of_o the_o cause_n or_o matter_n the_o the_o apostle_n have_v in_o hand_n which_o be_v free_a justification_n through_o faith_n in_o christ_n of_o which_o howsoever_o sometime_o some_o good_a man_n in_o the_o weakness_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o behold_v of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n may_v or_o do_v doubt_n yet_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o be_v be_v and_o ever_o shall_v be_v most_o sure_a and_o stable_a and_o therefore_o unless_o they_o will_v continual_o confound_v who_o have_v no_o familiarity_n or_o acquaintance_n with_o doubt_v or_o distrust_n nay_o be_v so_o far_o remoove_v from_o that_o that_o they_o be_v transport_v to_o another_o extreme_a namely_o to_o haughty_a and_o proud_a imagination_n concern_v themselves_o and_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o where_o he_o say_v take_v heed_n you_o fall_v it_o will_v be_v mark_v that_o he_o say_v not_o so_o much_o as_o fear_v much_o less_o let_v he_o doubt_v but_o let_v he_o beware_v or_o circumspect_o look_v unto_o himself_o and_o good_a reason_n there_o be_v he_o shall_v do_v so_o for_o none_o be_v they_o must_v needs_o be_v disquiet_v that_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v that_o he_o that_o know_v he_o have_v god_n for_o his_o judge_n and_o not_o for_o his_o father_n as_o the_o faithful_a people_n only_o have_v he_o so_o can_v be_v quiet_a in_o mind_n be_v in_o his_o own_o heart_n guilty_a of_o horrible_a sin_n as_o against_o god_n himself_o in_o heaven_n so_o against_o man_n upon_o earth_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o say_v that_o a_o wicked_a person_n be_v either_o not_o at_o all_o quiet_a or_o else_o the_o grace_n that_o he_o will_v seem_v to_o we_o must_v know_v that_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n be_v unseperable_a companion_n and_o go_v as_o it_o be_v arm_n in_o arm_n together_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v 1._o tim._n 1.19_o yea_o and_o that_o the_o fruit_n accompany_v they_o be_v never_o utter_o sunder_v from_o they_o but_o at_o some_o one_o time_n or_o another_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o their_o measure_n where_o the_o thing_n themselves_o be_v and_o that_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n have_v boldness_n towards_o god_n and_o be_v well_o certify_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o their_o own_o salvation_n thereby_o and_o that_o this_o in_o his_o meaning_n indeed_o it_o may_v appear_v by_o sundry_a word_n before_o go_v as_o when_o he_o say_v by_o this_o that_o be_v true_a and_o sincere_a love_n to_o our_o brethren_n we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v belong_v unto_o god_n who_o he_o signify_v also_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v when_o be_v say_v and_o shall_v before_o he_o assure_v our_o heart_n which_o assurance_n bring_v with_o it_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n can_v but_o shut_v out_o and_o kill_v as_o it_o be_v all_o doubt_v and_o again_o in_o the_o assumption_n they_o prove_v by_o a_o place_n of_o the_o prophet_n psal_n 19_o where_o he_o say_v who_o can_v understand_v hiâ—_n fault_n therefore_o no_o man_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o be_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o a_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n which_o be_v within_o himself_o but_o god_n spirit_n make_v the_o spiritual_a man_n able_a to_o judge_v and_o discern_v all_o thing_n yet_o he_o himself_o to_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o mayor_n proposition_n be_v not_o simple_a here_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v understand_v with_o make_v any_o answer_n or_o satisfaction_n unto_o god_n for_o they_o or_o sure_o determine_v concern_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o repentance_n because_o god_n have_v reveal_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o his_o word_n and_o to_o fetch_v it_o from_o his_o own_o head_n or_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v fit_a for_o that_o be_v deep_a and_o deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o no_o man_n shall_v hope_v for_o salvation_n but_o rather_o despair_v of_o it_o which_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v absurd_a be_v both_o ungodly_a and_o uncomfortable_a also_o but_o if_o they_o will_v yet_o further_o object_n and_o say_v that_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o he_o do_v true_o repent_v and_o believe_v or_o else_o whether_o he_o ascribe_v unto_o himself_o the_o thing_n he_o which_o we_o may_v discern_v and_o judge_v of_o the_o sincerity_n and_o truth_n both_o of_o our_o faith_n and_o repentance_n for_o as_o all_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n general_o be_v sure_a seal_n and_o pledge_n of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v in_o we_o and_o more_o particular_o our_o holy_a prayer_n to_o god_n according_a to_o that_o which_o be_v say_v rom._n 10._o how_o shall_v they_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o who_o they_o believe_v not_o so_o in_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n follow_v our_o repentance_n seal_v up_o also_o the_o sincerity_n and_o soundness_n thereof_o in_o our_o several_a soul_n now_o what_o these_o be_v we_o may_v see_v large_o recite_v 2._o cor._n 7._o as_o great_a care_n clear_v of_o ourselves_o indignation_n fear_n desire_v zeal_n revenge_n etc._n etc._n and_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o or_o may_v we_o not_o say_v that_o if_o in_o the_o little_a light_n of_o nature_n that_o remain_v in_o we_o untainted_a we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o discern_v of_o some_o repentance_n etc._n etc._n that_o a_o believe_a man_n may_v know_v that_o he_o do_v believe_v the_o apostle_n i_o think_v do_v plain_o show_v it_o in_o his_o own_o example_n when_o he_o say_v 2._o tim._n 1.2_o i_o know_v who_o i_o have_v believe_v and_o when_o philip_n act._n 8._o say_v unto_o the_o eunuch_n if_o thou_o do_v believe_v with_o all_o thy_o heart_n etc._n etc._n and_o he_o answer_v i_o believe_v that_o that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v that_o son_n of_o god_n do_v not_o the_o eunuch_n both_o know_v and_o feel_v faith_n the_o apostle_n tell_v us._n rom._n 10._o that_o with_o the_o say_v not_o the_o quantity_n of_o it_o as_o whether_o it_o be_v little_a or_o great_a suffice_v but_o the_o soundness_n &_o truth_n of_o it_o suffice_v though_o not_o before_o god_n neither_o for_o there_o be_v want_n in_o we_o &_o our_o good_a work_n that_o way_n yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o assurance_n for_o though_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o our_o purpose_n or_o before_o god_n yet_o it_o may_v suffice_v for_o another_o and_z as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o for_o even_o as_o not_o the_o quantity_n so_o much_o as_o the_o quality_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o truth_n and_o steadfastness_n of_o it_o be_v it_o that_o in_o some_o sort_n commend_v we_o to_o god_n but_o special_o minister_v much_o comfort_n to_o our_o own_o conscience_n and_o as_o not_o long_o and_o many_o prayer_n but_o short_a and_o sweet_a as_o we_o may_v say_v yea_o so_o do_v we_o say_v and_o believe_v also_o touch_v all_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o namely_o our_o repentance_n and_o let_v this_o suffice_v for_o this_o point_n 8_o their_a eight_o argument_n they_o make_v thus_o pride_n be_v a_o vice_n displease_v god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n humility_n and_o modesty_n be_v a_o virtue_n that_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n and_o be_v assure_v of_o eternal_a salvation_n be_v say_v nothing_o to_o it_o but_o willing_o yield_v and_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o the_o truth_n thereof_o but_o the_o minor_a be_v corrupt_a and_o false_a and_o therefore_o we_o deny_v it_o in_o both_o the_o part_n or_o proposition_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o arrogancy_n to_o be_v assure_v general_o of_o god_n favour_n for_o all_o mercy_n and_o particular_o of_o his_o grace_n concern_v eternal_a salvation_n since_o god_n himself_o for_o the_o better_a uphold_v of_o our_o heart_n and_o hope_n that_o way_n have_v be_v please_v to_o give_v unto_o we_o many_o gracious_a both_o prop_n and_o promise_n in_o his_o word_n which_o also_o in_o good_a time_n he_o will_v perform_v unto_o we_o as_o he_o have_v do_v to_o many_o of_o his_o faithful_a servant_n who_o have_v go_v before_o we_o in_o the_o flesh_n and_o in_o the_o faith_n for_o this_o and_o not_o that_o be_v arrogancy_n indeed_o to_o take_v that_o which_o do_v not_o belong_v unto_o we_o or_o to_o presume_v of_o this_o or_o that_o which_o we_o have_v not_o and_o yet_o deceive_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n imagine_v we_o have_v it_o or_o else_o have_v it_o to_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o have_v more_o than_o we_o enjoy_v or_o else_o enjoy_v it_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o it_o either_o as_o though_o we_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o or_o as_o though_o god_n have_v give_v it_o we_o to_o that_o end_n to_o make_v we_o swell_v over_o other_o but_o to_o assure_v ourselves_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o of_o eternal_a life_n be_v a_o doctrine_n that_o god_n have_v deliver_v in_o his_o word_n for_o the_o good_a and_o stay_n of_o his_o own_o people_n as_o we_o have_v already_o hear_v heretofore_o and_o shall_v again_o hereafter_o hear_v it_o prove_v more_o at_o large_a and_o therefore_o we_o can_v not_o arrogate_v or_o take_v any_o more_o unto_o ourselves_o then_o that_o that_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n belong_v unto_o we_o and_o presume_v here_o we_o can_v or_o be_v proud_a whether_o we_o have_v it_o or_o have_v not_o for_o it_o be_v madness_n to_o be_v lift_v up_o with_o that_o we_o have_v not_o and_o since_o we_o have_v it_o not_o of_o ourselves_o but_o from_o another_o we_o may_v say_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o that_o ihou_fw-mi have_v not_o receive_v &_o if_o thou_o have_v receive_v it_o why_o reioyc_a thou_o as_o though_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o and_o again_o we_o know_v god_n give_v no_o grace_n to_o any_o evil_a end_n howesoever_o man_n in_o his_o own_o corruption_n and_o satan_n in_o his_o malice_n against_o he_o abuse_v they_o many_o time_n thereto_o but_o as_o the_o grace_n themselves_o be_v good_a so_o both_o he_o in_o his_o purpose_n do_v and_o we_o in_o our_o practice_n ought_v to_o aim_v at_o good_a end_n and_o effect_n that_o so_o the_o one_o answer_v the_o other_o he_o may_v have_v glory_n other_o man_n good_a and_o ourselves_o comfort_n on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n to_o doubt_v of_o god_n favour_n but_o distrustfulnes_n or_o doubt_v rather_o for_o humility_n respect_v not_o god_n or_o not_o reach_v unto_o he_o though_o it_o be_v acceptable_a in_o his_o eye_n as_o other_o good_a thing_n be_v but_o concern_v man_n who_o when_o he_o consider_v either_o himself_o his_o sin_n and_o misery_n thereby_o or_o else_o god_n in_o his_o majesty_n might_n justice_n etc._n etc._n as_o a_o sharp_a revenger_n of_o the_o same_o have_v just_a occasion_n to_o be_v throw_v down_o be_v a_o holy_a &_o bless_a virgin_n whereas_o distrustfulness_n or_o doubt_v arise_v from_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o a_o imagination_n touch_v the_o height_n or_o heinousnes_n of_o our_o iniquity_n or_o ignorance_n of_o god_n divine_a nature_n and_o holy_a word_n as_o though_o he_o can_v not_o or_o will_v not_o forgive_v we_o be_v a_o foul_a vice_n because_o it_o dishonour_v god_n in_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o add_v affliction_n unto_o a_o fearful_a and_o distress_a soul_n and_o both_o these_o point_v i_o think_v we_o may_v see_v plain_a by_o and_o earthly_a comparison_n for_o as_o when_o a_o great_a prince_n or_o person_n that_o both_o have_v largeness_n of_o power_n and_o soundness_n of_o good_a will_n shall_v promise_v we_o much_o and_o will_v we_o in_o the_o word_n of_o a_o prince_n to_o assure_v ourselves_o and_o be_v bold_a then_o to_o doubt_n be_v folly_n in_o ourselves_o and_o discredit_v to_o the_o person_n that_o offer_v &_o will_v perform_v such_o singular_a favour_n so_o be_v it_o in_o this_o behalf_n between_o we_o and_o god_n who_o power_n we_o can_v doubt_v of_o not_o only_o because_o it_o be_v absolute_a and_o infinite_a but_o also_o because_o he_o have_v effectual_o in_o all_o age_n and_o to_o every_o person_n perform_v whatsoever_o he_o have_v faithful_o promise_v and_o who_o good_a will_v we_o may_v not_o call_v into_o question_n he_o have_v give_v we_o so_o many_o assurance_n thereof_o as_o his_o sweet_a promise_n the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n the_o pledge_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o many_o particular_a grace_n both_o outward_a and_o inward_a as_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o bestow_v upon_o us._n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v it_o be_v not_o pride_n but_o christian_a humility_n not_o only_o to_o think_v or_o speak_v low_o of_o but_o as_o it_o be_v to_o distrust_v yea_o
condemn_v our_o own_o deed_n and_o work_n and_o renounce_v they_o utter_o to_o rest_n and_o stay_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n promise_v unto_o we_o for_o christ_n our_o saviour_n his_o sake_n and_o always_o both_o in_o mind_n and_o mouth_n to_o have_v that_o worthy_a say_n of_o the_o prophet_n rise_v with_o we_o enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n o_o lord_n for_o then_o no_o flesh_n shall_v be_v righteouse_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n 1._o cor._n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o just_a or_o justify_v for_o all_o that_o one_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n as_o they_o suppose_v but_o arrogancy_n and_o indeed_o contempt_n of_o god_n and_o heavenly_a promise_n not_o to_o give_v credit_n to_o or_o not_o to_o believe_v these_o sweet_a promise_n and_o therefore_o saint_n john_n say_v he_o that_o believe_v not_o god_n have_v make_v he_o a_o liar_n 1._o john_n 5.10_o and_o we_o may_v see_v a_o memorable_a example_n of_o it_o in_o ahaz_n isaiah_n 7._o who_o refuse_v a_o sign_n give_v unto_o he_o from_o god_n but_o they_o press_v this_o further_a &_o say_v it_o be_v a_o token_n of_o humility_n to_o acknowledge_v our_o infirmity_n and_o sin_n and_o who_o will_v deny_v that_o that_o have_v any_o fault_n or_o savour_n in_o he_o of_o godliness_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n who_o know_v not_o that_o humility_n and_o doubt_v differ_v as_o much_o as_o vice_n &_o virtue_n or_o what_o man_n unless_o he_o be_v mad_a not_o only_o without_o reason_n but_o against_o godliness_n will_v suppose_v that_o our_o true_a humility_n shall_v destroy_v confidence_n boldness_n or_o faith_n concern_v god_n grace_n forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o eternal_a salvation_n since_o our_o humility_n be_v as_o other_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o faith_n if_o man_n do_v sound_o understand_v what_o humility_n be_v they_o will_v doubtless_o be_v of_o another_o mind_n they_o conclude_v so_o this_o be_v humility_n not_o only_o true_o to_o fear_n god_n as_o a_o judge_n and_o so_o to_o acknowledge_v in_o his_o sight_n our_o sin_n and_o infirmity_n but_o also_o to_o fly_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o stay_v in_o his_o all_o sufficient_a satisfaction_n do_v this_o overthrow_n a_o poor_a man_n poverty_n that_o he_o beg_v a_o alm_n for_o god_n sake_n as_o we_o say_v or_o do_v this_o destroy_v a_o weak_a man_n weakness_n that_o he_o seek_v for_o shelter_n and_o defence_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o strong_a or_o do_v this_o take_v away_o a_o sick_a man_n sickness_n that_o he_o lay_v it_o open_a to_o the_o physician_n and_o require_v medicine_n no_o very_o but_o rather_o argue_v poverty_n weakness_n sickness_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o do_v our_o humility_n but_o let_v we_o go_v forward_o 9_o the_o nine_o argument_n be_v this_o where_o there_o be_v unworthiness_n there_o can_v be_v assurance_n of_o god_n grace_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o salvation_n but_o still_o there_o must_v be_v doubt_v but_o in_o they_o that_o be_v turn_v to_o god_n there_o be_v great_a unworthiness_n while_o they_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o have_v sufficient_o and_o worthy_o prepare_v themselves_o and_o perform_v all_o the_o covenant_n and_o condition_n that_o god_n have_v prescribe_v therefore_o etc._n etc._n the_o proposition_n or_o mayor_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v very_o false_a because_o the_o behold_n or_o feel_v of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n do_v no_o more_o work_n doubt_v much_o less_o distrustfulness_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n people_n then_o feel_v of_o outward_a want_n make_v natural_a man_n careless_a of_o a_o supply_n it_o be_v a_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n yea_o such_o a_o grace_n as_o god_n only_o bestow_v upon_o his_o own_o child_n that_o so_o in_o the_o behold_n and_o sight_n thereof_o they_o may_v more_o earnest_o seek_v after_o and_o be_v more_o fruitful_o make_v partaker_n of_o the_o exceed_a riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a of_o the_o world_n be_v either_o cease_v with_o benumbedness_n and_o senslesness_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o good_a reason_n thereof_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o sin_n or_o else_o see_v it_o in_o judgement_n and_o condemnation_n and_o good_a reason_n of_o it_o also_o because_o rather_o they_o have_v make_v no_o account_n to_o profit_v by_o god_n mercy_n but_o to_o abuse_v they_o rather_o to_o licentiousness_n and_o sin_n and_o that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o assure_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n namely_o that_o the_o feel_n of_o the_o indignity_n of_o god_n people_n have_v neither_o wrought_v doubt_v in_o themselves_o nor_o cause_v god_n the_o less_o but_o more_o rather_o to_o esteem_v they_o we_o have_v many_o memorable_a example_n but_o for_o the_o present_a we_o will_v content_v ourselves_o
