the_o sun_n be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o that_o which_o now_o be_v in_o the_o sun_n so_o the_o truth_n and_o word_n of_o god_n be_v still_o the_o same_o not_o contrary_a to_o itself_o the_o light_n of_o holy_a truth_n which_o be_v before_o the_o word_n write_v and_o this_o which_o shine_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v the_o same_o and_o therefore_o the_o papist_n be_v yet_o more_o entertain_v it_o such_o as_o will_v like_v the_o world_n better_o if_o it_o be_v over-shadowed_n with_o a_o night_n of_o ignorance_n and_o like_o those_o church_n best_o that_o have_v but_o dark_a lantern_n or_o such_o candle_n as_o after_o a_o little_a time_n of_o blaze_a go_v out_o with_o a_o unsavoury_a snuff_n oh_o think_v it_o a_o special_a mercy_n of_o god_n that_o he_o hold_v forth_o the_o light_n unto_o thou_o on_o this_o day_n and_o do_v thou_o with_o all_o readiness_n both_o look_n towards_o it_o and_o walk_v by_o it_o 3._o again_o consider_v that_o as_o light_n be_v the_o first_o thing_n which_o be_v make_v when_o the_o earth_n be_v without_o form_n and_o void_a so_o when_o any_o soul_n in_o the_o state_n of_o natural_a corruption_n be_v without_o christ_n form_v in_o they_o void_a of_o grace_n full_a of_o pollution_n the_o first_o thing_n wrought_v in_o we_o be_v a_o light_n of_o sanctify_a knowledge_n sound_a illumination_n before_o we_o can_v bring_v forth_o any_o duty_n please_v to_o god_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o deceive_v like_o those_o who_o think_v that_o ignorance_n be_v the_o mother_n of_o devotion_n ignorance_n be_v as_o great_a a_o enemy_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o salvation_n as_o utter_v darkness_n be_v to_o the_o world_n and_o to_o the_o creature_n in_o it_o and_o that_o spiritual_a light_n be_v as_o needful_a for_o the_o former_a as_o this_o other_o light_n be_v for_o the_o latter_a they_o therefore_o that_o be_v in_o their_o natural_a blindness_n be_v as_o far_o from_o the_o new_a creation_n as_o the_o earth_n be_v from_o its_o natural_a perfection_n while_o darkness_n be_v upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o deep_a 4._o as_o god_n alone_o by_o his_o call_n do_v bring_v forth_o light_a so_o think_v you_o that_o all_o the_o knowledge_n which_o thou_o have_v especial_o in_o heavenly_a thing_n be_v whole_o from_o god_n without_o which_o nothing_o be_v in_o thou_o but_o utter_a darkness_n and_o therefore_o thou_o have_v no_o more_o cause_n to_o be_v proud_a of_o thy_o knowledge_n than_o that_o muddy_a heap_n of_o earth_n in_o the_o beginning_n have_v to_o brag_v of_o the_o light_n which_o shine_v upon_o it_o have_v lie_v like_o a_o dead_a unprofitable_a lump_n without_o any_o thing_n grow_v upon_o it_o in_o the_o most_o seasonable_a time_n of_o the_o year_n have_v not_o the_o lord_n bid_v it_o and_o in_o bid_v it_o enable_v it_o to_o bring_v forth_o consider_v then_o with_o thyself_o that_o every_o year_n increase_v every_o crop_n of_o corn_n every_o tree_n every_o grain_n every_o seed_n or_o fruit_n of_o any_o tree_n every_o grass_n and_o herb_n which_o the_o earth_n bear_v at_o any_o time_n iâ—_n come_v undoubted_o out_o of_o the_o earth_n by_o virtue_n of_o this_o sovereign_a command_n of_o god_n yea_o as_o well_o the_o propagation_n and_o succession_n of_o these_o as_o the_o first_o creation_n come_v from_o his_o word_n for_o so_o he_o say_v let_v the_o earth_n bring_v forth_o the_o tree_n bear_v fruit_n after_o its_o kind_n and_o the_o herb_n bear_v seed_n after_o its_o kind_n and_o it_o be_v so_o and_o therefore_o give_v all_o the_o glory_n to_o he_o for_o these_o thing_n from_o who_o all_o thing_n be_v receive_v by_o who_o the_o earth_n be_v make_v fruitful_a and_o yield_v a_o increase_n let_v we_o lament_v the_o unthankfulness_n the_o pride_n and_o blindness_n that_o be_v among_o we_o do_v we_o not_o murmur_v many_o of_o uâ—_n if_o we_o have_v not_o as_o much_o as_o former_o we_o have_v as_o if_o now_o we_o can_v plead_v custom_n with_o god_n and_o challenge_v into_o iron_n against_o we_o 3._o among_o these_o plant_n observe_v how_o weed_n and_o other_o hurtful_a thing_n do_v grow_v of_o themselves_o but_o the_o best_a and_o most_o useful_a must_v be_v careful_o plant_v so_o sin_n and_o corruption_n spring_v natural_o out_o of_o the_o evil_a soil_n of_o our_o heart_n but_o grace_n and_o holiness_n be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n his_o plantation_n again_o barren_a tree_n be_v cut_v down_o by_o the_o provident_a husbandman_n that_o they_o may_v not_o cumber_v the_o ground_n as_o you_o see_v in_o the_o gospel_n which_o shall_v move_v we_o by_o bear_v fruit_n unto_o god_n to_o work_v out_o our_o own_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a the_o leaf_n of_o a_o outward_a profession_n be_v not_o sufficient_a but_o to_o they_o must_v be_v join_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o sanctify_a conversation_n the_o tree_n and_o every_o branch_n and_o twig_n thereof_o receive_v sap_n life_n nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n every_o true_a believer_n receive_v heavenly_a life_n and_o grace_n from_o christ_n jesus_n so_o long_o as_o the_o branch_n be_v join_v to_o the_o tree_n and_o so_o to_o the_o root_n it_o receive_v benefit_n and_o refreshment_n from_o the_o dew_n and_o rain_n but_o if_o it_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o the_o tree_n the_o sweet_a shower_n can_v preserve_v it_o from_o be_v wither_v he_o that_o be_v true_o unite_v to_o christ_n as_o a_o branch_n to_o the_o root_n by_o the_o spirit_n and_o faith_n he_o receive_v benefit_n growth_n and_o spiritual_a refreshment_n from_o the_o outward_a mean_n of_o grace_n the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n but_o if_o he_o be_v not_o true_o unite_v to_o he_o the_o sweet_a dew_n that_o ever_o fall_v from_o heaven_n can_v keep_v spiritual_a life_n within_o he_o on_o the_o other_o side_n though_o the_o branch_n do_v receive_v life_n and_o nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n yet_o it_o want_v refreshment_n from_o the_o shower_n of_o heaven_n so_o those_o fanatical_a dreamer_n be_v to_o be_v condemn_v who_o pretend_v a_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o partake_v of_o his_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o brag_v they_o have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v or_o any_o outward_a mean_n again_o let_v the_o renew_n of_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n by_o these_o creature_n every_o spring_n put_v thou_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o wonderful_a efficacy_n of_o god_n his_o word_n which_o from_o the_o beginning_n unto_o this_o present_a time_n have_v make_v the_o earth_n thus_o fruitful_a and_o let_v it_o teach_v thou_o to_o rely_v upon_o his_o truth_n and_o promise_n in_o other_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o this_o chap._n vi_o meditation_n on_o the_o four_o day_n work_n sect_n 1._o from_o the_o third_z i_o come_v to_o the_o four_o day_n which_o we_o usual_o call_v wednesday_n which_o be_v the_o first_o day_n that_o have_v a_o sun_n to_o give_v it_o light_n to_o which_o be_v add_v the_o moon_n to_o rule_v the_o nâ—ghâ—_n and_o the_o star_n to_o attend_v she_o which_o glorious_a work_n of_o a_o most_o glorious_a god_n shall_v raise_v our_o thought_n to_o some_o holy_a meditation_n 1._o now_o consider_v on_o this_o day_n how_o that_o as_o the_o water_n which_o be_v before_o disperse_v all_o abroad_o upon_o and_o about_o the_o earth_n be_v on_o the_o three_o day_n gather_v into_o one_o store-house_n call_v sea_n so_o the_o light_n which_o be_v before_o diffuse_v through_o the_o huge_a space_n of_o the_o creation_n be_v now_o as_o it_o be_v draw_v together_o into_o one_o body_n of_o the_o sun_n as_o a_o full_a and_o common_a treasury_n consider_v here_o that_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v in_o himself_o infinite_o more_o bright_a than_o the_o light_n itself_o need_v no_o light_n in_o respect_n of_o himself_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v for_o we_o that_o he_o make_v the_o light_n and_o we_o shall_v bless_v he_o for_o it_o so_o in_o regard_n of_o himself_o he_o need_v no_o word_n nor_o revelation_n of_o heavenly_a mystery_n be_v infinite_a in_o all_o knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v for_o we_o that_o he_o give_v his_o word_n to_o be_v a_o light_n and_o cause_v by_o his_o day_n work_v we_o have_v lay_v down_o in_o gen._n 1.20_o 21_o 22_o 23._o wherein_o the_o water_n be_v furnish_v with_o fish_n and_o other_o creature_n that_o live_v there_o and_o the_o air_n with_o foul_n and_o such_o creature_n as_o live_v in_o it_o 1._o here_o consider_v that_o after_o those_o four_o day_n when_o the_o heaven_n be_v furnish_v with_o light_n and_o the_o earth_n beautify_v with_o plant_n spring_v out_o of_o it_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n yet_o all_o this_o while_n there_o be_v not_o one_o creature_n throughout_o the_o whole_a creation_n that_o have_v sense_n or_o power_n to_o move_v from_o place_n to_o place_n not_o one_o fly_n or_o the_o least_o thing_n move_v in_o the_o air_n not_o one_o fish_n swim_v throughout_o the_o sea_n river_n or_o other_o water_n not_o one_o worm_n creep_v on_o the_o earth_n here_o then_o admire_v the_o wonderful_a power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n who_o on_o the_o five_o day_n by_o his_o all-commanding_a word_n fill_v the_o air_n with_o multitude_n of_o creature_n fly_v there_o the_o water_n with_o abundant_a of_o fishâ—s_n swim_v there_o this_o be_v do_v even_o in_o a_o moment_n consider_v what_o numberless_a swarm_n there_o be_v both_o of_o foul_n and_o fish_n bring_v forth_o on_o the_o five_o day_n whereas_o the_o very_a day_n before_o there_o be_v not_o one_o of_o any_o kind_n to_o be_v find_v in_o any_o part_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o as_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n join_v these_o two_o sort_n of_o creature_n together_o so_o he_o make_v in_o many_o respect_v a_o special_a affinity_n between_o they_o as_o the_o foul_n be_v cover_v with_o feather_n so_o the_o fish_n with_o scale_n as_o the_o foul_n move_v in_o the_o air_n so_o do_v the_o fish_n in_o that_o element_n which_o come_v near_a the_o nature_n of_o the_o air_n as_o the_o foul_n have_v wing_n to_o fly_v withal_o so_o the_o fish_n have_v â—innes_n whereby_o they_o swim_v and_o that_o be_v a_o motion_n very_o like_a to_o that_o of_o fly_v yea_o some_o of_o either_o kind_n do_v communicate_v with_o each_o other_o in_o their_o element_n for_o as_o we_o have_v water-foul_n so_o there_o have_v be_v flying-fish_n in_o great_a abundance_n so_o that_o here_o you_o may_v magnify_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n who_o in_o the_o day_n that_o these_o creature_n be_v make_v do_v imprint_v upon_o they_o such_o property_n and_o quality_n as_o shall_v be_v evidence_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n in_o some_o sort_n that_o they_o be_v but_o the_o work_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o day_n 2._o consider_v here_o that_o as_o the_o lord_n have_v appoint_v the_o foul_n to_o fly_v in_o the_o air_n and_o the_o fish_n to_o swim_v in_o the_o sea_n confine_v each_o to_o his_o own_o element_n for_o the_o general_a though_o some_o few_o particular_n be_v suffer_v to_o live_v in_o both_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o walk_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o our_o calling_n and_o not_o to_o think_v we_o shall_v mend_v ourselves_o in_o a_o different_a element_n or_o another_o kind_n of_o course_n without_o some_o special_a cause_n some_o few_o may_v have_v some_o special_a warrant_n to_o change_v their_o calling_n as_o amos_n to_o leave_v his_o flock_n and_o teach_v the_o people_n and_o peter_n to_o leave_v his_o net_n and_o fish_n for_o man_n these_o have_v a_o immediate_a call_n from_o god_n and_o so_o i_o dare_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o in_o case_n of_o great_a necessity_n when_o the_o church_n be_v destitute_a of_o able_a minister_n some_o well-studied_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o experience_v in_o the_o mystery_n of_o grace_n may_v take_v upon_o they_o the_o office_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v lawful_o separate_v unto_o that_o function_n yet_o this_o will_v prove_v no_o more_o that_o every_o one_o may_v at_o his_o pleasure_n run_v from_o the_o shop_n to_o the_o pulpit_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o all_o the_o fish_n in_o the_o sea_n may_v fly_v up_o into_o the_o air_n because_o some_o few_o do_v so_o and_o this_o shall_v especial_o â—each_v christian_n who_o be_v call_v unto_o holiness_n to_o take_v heed_n how_o they_o leave_v their_o element_n they_o be_v bid_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n even_o as_o bird_n fly_v in_o the_o air_n and_o in_o this_o element_n they_o must_v keep_v for_o as_o the_o air_n give_v breath_n unto_o the_o foul_n that_o fly_v in_o it_o so_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n give_v the_o new_a life_n unto_o those_o that_o walk_v in_o he_o the_o water_n will_v choke_v and_o drown_v the_o foul_n if_o they_o shall_v fall_v into_o they_o so_o sin_n be_v that_o which_o endanger_v the_o spiritual_a life_n when_o a_o christian_n fall_v into_o it_o the_o air_n give_v a_o speedy_a flight_n and_o motion_n to_o the_o bird_n whereas_o the_o water_n will_v wet_v their_o wing_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o move_v but_o slow_o if_o they_o fall_v into_o it_o so_o the_o spirit_n when_o a_o christian_a walk_v in_o it_o carry_v he_o along_o with_o winged-affection_n and_o set_v his_o heart_n in_o a_o speedy_a motion_n upon_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n make_v he_o ready_a unto_o every_o good_a work_n but_o if_o he_o fall_v into_o sin_n which_o be_v like_o the_o water_n of_o the_o dead_a sea_n that_o lake_n of_o sodom_n his_o heart_n be_v like_o a_o bird_n drench_v in_o water_n his_o affection_n be_v deaden_v his_o heart_n move_v need_v of_o more_o than_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o help_v as_o to_o be_v hold_v over_o a_o warm_a fire_n etc._n etc._n so_o a_o christian_n that_o he_o may_v recover_v his_o wing_n again_o and_o have_v his_o heart_n spiritual_o affect_v and_o enlarge_v towards_o god_n have_v need_n of_o special_a humiliation_n special_a meditation_n pâ—aier_n and_o other_o warm_n and_o quicken_a mean_n to_o raise_v he_o up_o 3._o as_o the_o air_n give_v breath_n and_o motion_n so_o also_o it_o give_v support_v to_o the_o bird_n earth_n and_o it_o carry_v they_o even_o as_o the_o earth_n do_v the_o beast_n which_o go_v up_o and_o down_o upon_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n also_o give_v support_v unto_o all_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n if_o it_o be_v not_o ordinary_a it_o may_v seem_v strange_a that_o the_o air_n which_o none_o can_v see_v be_v so_o thin_a a_o substance_n shall_v carry_v so_o many_o million_o of_o soul_n as_o there_o be_v in_o it_o fly_v up_o and_o down_o wonderful_a be_v the_o power_n of_o the_o bless_a invisible_a spirit_n who_o support_v so_o many_o thousand_o christian_n by_o his_o sanctify_a virtue_n against_o all_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n 4._o as_o these_o bird_n do_v now_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o be_v the_o foul_n create_v in_o the_o air_n at_o the_o first_o so_o whosoever_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n be_v also_o bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v his_o begin_n in_o this_o element_n 5._o consider_v that_o as_o the_o bird_n their_o affection_n be_v still_o grovel_v here_o below_o 6._o you_o see_v how_o spare_o the_o bird_n take_v of_o the_o water_n a_o bird_n do_v not_o drink_v like_o a_o beast_n it_o rather_o sip_v so_o shall_v a_o christian_n spare_o use_v the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n rather_o sip_v like_o the_o bird_n than_o swill_v like_o the_o swine_n as_o for_o those_o that_o give_v themselves_o to_o drink_v down_o iniquity_n like_o water_n and_o to_o commit_v sin_n with_o greediness_n they_o be_v none_o of_o those_o who_o have_v their_o conversation_n in_o heaven_n nay_o those_o that_o glut_v themselves_o with_o earthly_a pleasure_n know_v no_o better_a contentment_n than_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o please_v the_o sense_n the_o appetite_n the_o eye_n ear_n taste_n etc._n etc._n they_o

spirit_n in_o run_v the_o way_n of_o his_o commandment_n than_o in_o serve_v the_o necessity_n of_o nature_n yea_o it_o shall_v be_v his_o meat_n and_o drink_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v a_o delight_n to_o the_o bird_n to_o sing_v and_o soar_v aloft_o again_o as_o the_o bird_n use_v not_o these_o thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v her_o unfit_a to_o fly_v so_o a_o christian_a must_v not_o abuse_v meat_n and_o drink_n so_o as_o to_o clog_v and_o dull_v his_o spirit_n and_o make_v he_o more_o dull_a and_o dead_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o so_o to_o refresh_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o cheerful_a and_o lively_a in_o his_o heavenly_a flight_n 7._o as_o the_o bird_n not_o sow_v nor_o gather_v into_o barnes_n as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o yet_o be_v feed_v by_o our_o heavenly_a father_n so_o shall_v a_o child_n of_o god_n depend_v upon_o his_o providence_n without_o distrustful_a ear_n against_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n though_o not_o without_o moderate_a and_o christian_n care_n which_o serve_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n 8._o as_o the_o bird_n have_v find_v somewhat_o to_o satisfy_v its_o hunger_n by_o its_o they_o so_o when_o a_o christian_a be_v most_o raise_v in_o spiritual_a affection_n to_o the_o great_a height_n of_o heavenly-mindedness_a keep_v near_a heaven_n than_o be_v the_o earth_n far_o out_o of_o sight_n and_o he_o be_v least_o move_v with_o the_o thing_n here_o below_o and_o best_a able_a to_o contemn_v earthly_a vanity_n he_o be_v too_o far_o above_o these_o to_o be_v much_o affect_v towards_o they_o therefore_o this_o shall_v make_v we_o think_v of_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n mind_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v above_o and_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o help_v ourselves_o against_o earthly_a affection_n and_o fleshly_a lust_n think_v with_o thyself_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o i_o be_o so_o earthly-minded_n that_o my_o affection_n be_v so_o engage_v to_o this_o or_o that_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o can_v come_v off_o nor_o free_v myself_o that_o i_o can_v scarce_o persuade_v my_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v without_o these_o and_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v this_o because_o my_o heart_n be_v not_o carry_v aloft_o it_o draw_v too_o near_o the_o ground_n it_o withdraw_v too_o much_o from_o god_n if_o i_o shall_v keep_v up_o my_o heart_n close_o to_o god_n these_o thing_n will_v be_v out_o of_o sight_n the_o earth_n will_v seldom_o be_v in_o my_o thought_n at_o least_o not_o so_o as_o to_o work_v much_o upon_o my_o affection_n on_o the_o other_o side_n you_o see_v that_o those_o bird_n which_o use_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o ground_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o those_o that_o use_v about_o our_o house_n so_o also_o those_o christian_n that_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o the_o deal_n and_o business_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o have_v but_o slow_a affection_n and_o sluggish_a motion_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n they_o go_v but_o cold_o about_o good_a duty_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o bear_v we_o upward_o 11._o consider_v also_o that_o as_o the_o bird_n can_v mount_v up_o into_o the_o air_n and_o yet_o light_a upon_o the_o earth_n too_o and_o receive_v some_o refreshment_n there_o whereas_o the_o beast_n can_v mount_v up_o and_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_a can_v and_o may_v partake_v of_o the_o natural_a comfort_n and_o refreshment_n of_o this_o life_n though_o in_o a_o moderate_a manner_n and_o measure_n as_o well_o as_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v mount_v up_o to_o heaven_n can_v live_v in_o the_o air_n can_v live_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v no_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o spiritual_a man_n judge_v all_o thing_n he_o can_v discern_v what_o be_v in_o nature_n but_o himself_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n his_o excellency_n can_v be_v discern_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o nature_n 12._o again_o as_o the_o bird_n live_v in_o a_o stormy_a element_n and_o feel_v much_o alteration_n of_o weather_n heat_n cold_a wind_n etc._n etc._n as_o the_o air_n be_v the_o most_o unsettle_a of_o all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o creation_n so_o christian_n do_v live_v in_o a_o condition_n subject_a to_o manifold_a alteration_n subject_a to_o many_o storm_n of_o persecution_n and_o temptation_n and_o as_o the_o bird_n be_v then_o especial_o in_o danger_n by_o snare_n and_o gin_n when_o they_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n to_o which_o they_o be_v not_o subject_a when_o they_o be_v aloft_o in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_n be_v then_o in_o danger_n to_o be_v ensnare_v and_o entangle_v when_o he_o deal_v with_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v most_o affect_a to_o the_o thing_n below_o when_o he_o be_v most_o heavenly-minded_n then_o be_v he_o most_o out_o of_o danger_n of_o these_o snare_n 13._o the_o bird_n in_o the_o air_n meet_v with_o bird_n of_o prey_n there_o also_o which_o be_v ready_a to_o seize_v upon_o they_o and_o destroy_v they_o so_o the_o devil_n who_o be_v call_v the_o prince_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o air_n do_v especial_o choose_v to_o assault_v those_o that_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n even_o then_o when_o they_o be_v most_o spiritual_a endeavour_v to_o pull_v down_o those_o that_o be_v high_a christian_a providence_n in_o behalf_n of_o their_o child_n 2._o as_o those_o bird_n of_o prey_n and_o ravenous_a foul_n make_v use_n of_o that_o advantage_n which_o they_o have_v in_o height_n and_o strength_n to_o seize_v upon_o divers_a thing_n here_o below_o so_o many_o oppressor_n and_o greedy_a worldling_n abuse_v that_o advantage_n which_o they_o have_v in_o wealth_n and_o power_n to_o seize_v upon_o the_o estate_n of_o other_o that_o be_v below_o they_o and_o not_o able_a to_o make_v resistance_n and_o as_o those_o ravenous_a bird_n be_v of_o all_o other_o the_o most_o hateful_a so_o these_o greedy_a and_o over-bearing_a oppressor_n do_v carry_v the_o curse_n and_o detestation_n of_o the_o country_n with_o they_o again_o as_o some_o bird_n hate_v the_o light_n so_o some_o man_n in_o love_n to_o the_o work_n of_o darkness_n can_v endure_v the_o light_n that_o shine_v in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n or_o in_o the_o conversation_n of_o the_o godly_a 3._o consider_v also_o that_o as_o the_o foul_n do_v gather_v and_o cherish_v their_o young_a one_o under_o their_o wing_n so_o the_o lord_n do_v shroud_v his_o child_n under_o the_o wing_n of_o his_o protection_n and_o as_o the_o little_a one_o be_v thereby_o safe_a against_o the_o ravenous_a bird_n so_o the_o godly_a be_v thus_o shelter_v against_o cruel_a enemy_n and_o manifold_a danger_n as_o the_o young_a one_o be_v cherish_v and_o refresh_v by_o this_o mean_n with_o a_o kindly_a warmth_n so_o the_o godly_a be_v wonderful_o refresh_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o god_n love_n with_o a_o lively_a and_o most_o comfortable_a warmth_n from_o the_o presence_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o as_o the_o young_a one_o after_o a_o storm_n be_v apt_a to_o stray_v abroad_o and_o play_v about_o in_o the_o sun_n again_o until_o the_o kite_n be_v ready_a to_o seize_v upon_o they_o so_o the_o child_n of_o god_n in_o time_n of_o prosperity_n be_v apt_a to_o withdraw_v themselves_o from_o that_o near_a communion_n with_o god_n until_o that_o prince_n of_o the_o air_n fly_v all_o about_o and_o seek_v his_o prey_n do_v fall_n upon_o they_o with_o some_o dangerous_a temptation_n 4._o as_o the_o not_o to_o make_v much_o account_n of_o these_o thing_n much_o less_o to_o purchase_v they_o with_o the_o loss_n of_o everlasting_a life_n 6._o in_o a_o word_n we_o may_v here_o consider_v the_o wonderful_a wisdom_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o abundant_a variety_n of_o these_o wing_a creature_n in_o the_o beauty_n of_o many_o of_o they_o in_o the_o swiftness_n of_o many_o and_o most_o of_o they_o the_o variety_n of_o kind_n of_o colour_n of_o quantity_n of_o quality_n and_o to_o those_o we_o must_v refer_v those_o lesser_a sort_n of_o creature_n viz._n bee_n fly_n wasp_n hornet_n locust_n caterpillar_n yea_o the_o least_o gnat_n or_o whatsoever_o fly_v in_o the_o air_n all_o which_o may_v yield_v we_o much_o matter_n of_o meditation_n and_o admiration_n glorious_o do_v the_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n appear_v in_o the_o little_a bee_n which_o be_v say_v to_o have_v their_o king_n who_o they_o follow_v and_o obey_v which_o out_o of_o many_o flower_n suck_v that_o which_o they_o digest_v into_o honey_n and_o set_v it_o into_o such_o a_o frame_n of_o the_o comb_n as_o no_o wit_n of_o man_n can_v make_v the_o like_a this_o honey_n as_o sweet_a as_o it_o be_v yet_o every_o child_n of_o god_n must_v get_v such_o a_o spiritual_a relish_n that_o like_o david_n he_o may_v find_v the_o word_n of_o god_n more_o sweet_a than_o it_o and_o the_o seem_a sweetness_n which_o sin_n bring_v at_o the_o
first_o but_o to_o beware_v and_o tremble_v at_o that_o venomous_a and_o smart_a sting_n which_o it_o leave_v behind_o again_o as_o fly_n be_v most_o busy_a in_o the_o sun_n so_o be_v temptation_n in_o prosperity_n and_o as_o the_o fly_n be_v apt_a to_o light_v upon_o that_o part_n of_o the_o body_n where_o there_o be_v a_o fore_n so_o be_v satan_n wont_n to_o assault_v the_o soul_n where_o it_o be_v weak_a and_o to_o take_v advantage_n of_o those_o corruption_n that_o do_v most_o prevail_v in_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o as_o when_o fly_n be_v beat_v away_o they_o come_v again_o very_o speedy_o so_o when_o satan_n temptation_n be_v resist_v and_o put_v back_o another_o swarm_n of_o fly_n be_v at_o hand_n other_o temptation_n be_v ready_a to_o assault_v and_o of_o this_o especial_o christian_n have_v experience_n when_o they_o be_v pester_v with_o blasphemous_a thought_n cast_v into_o their_o mind_n by_o satan_n against_o which_o they_o must_v take_v comfort_n in_o that_o by_o a_o christian_a live_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o his_o life_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o his_o heart_n to_o partake_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o be_v conversant_a in_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v even_o death_n to_o a_o carnal_a heart_n to_o be_v exercise_v this_o way_n and_o he_o think_v not_o himself_o a_o free_a man_n until_o he_o be_v let_v loose_a from_o these_o the_o fish_n though_o it_o live_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o lively_a but_o lie_v almost_o for_o dead_a when_o it_o be_v in_o the_o open_a air_n out_o of_o the_o water_n and_o the_o natural_a man_n though_o he_o be_v alive_a not_o yet_o dead_a yet_o be_v he_o not_o lively_a but_o like_o one_o as_o good_a as_o dead_a when_o he_o be_v take_v out_o of_o his_o element_n and_o restrain_v by_o any_o mean_n from_o his_o belove_a sin_n and_o tie_v to_o holy_a duty_n in_o public_a or_o in_o private_a he_o have_v no_o life_n in_o these_o thing_n his_o heart_n be_v dead_a towards_o they_o 2._o and_o as_o the_o fish_n live_v in_o the_o salt_n water_n remain_v fresh_a so_o a_o carnal_a man_n live_v in_o the_o church_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n remain_v in_o his_o unsavoury_a natural_a condition_n not_o have_v the_o salt_n of_o mortification_n whereby_o to_o eat_v out_o his_o corruption_n and_o dead_a flesh_n and_o make_v he_o a_o acceptable_a sacrifice_n unto_o god_n as_o it_o be_v say_v every_o sacrifice_n must_v be_v salt_v with_o salt_n though_o he_o live_v under_o the_o word_n yet_o he_o carry_v no_o relish_n of_o the_o word_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o life_n therefore_o we_o must_v not_o only_o look_v what_o mean_v we_o have_v but_o how_o these_o mean_n do_v work_v upon_o we_o whether_o we_o be_v transform_v into_o the_o word_n for_o a_o man_n to_o imagine_v that_o he_o be_v therefore_o a_o christian_a because_o he_o hear_v christ_n preach_v be_v as_o idle_a as_o to_o say_v the_o fish_n must_v needs_o be_v salt_n because_o it_o live_v in_o the_o salt_n water_n 3._o again_o in_o that_o the_o lord_n feed_v such_o innumerable_a multitude_n of_o fish_n in_o the_o water_n by_o what_o mean_v we_o can_v imagine_v so_o shall_v we_o be_v confident_a that_o he_o will_v provide_v for_o we_o though_o the_o mean_n as_o yet_o seem_v to_o be_v hide_v from_o we_o for_o though_o some_o of_o the_o great_a fish_n do_v feed_v upon_o the_o lesser_a yet_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v how_o such_o a_o admirable_a number_n of_o they_o shall_v be_v continual_o supply_v but_o the_o lord_n al-sufficient_a open_v his_o hand_n of_o bounty_n and_o fill_v they_o with_o good_a thing_n 4._o wonderful_n be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o the_o strange_a variety_n of_o kind_n in_o the_o strange_a shape_n of_o these_o creature_n insomuch_o that_o it_o be_v think_v there_o be_v few_o beast_n on_o earth_n but_o that_o there_o be_v fish_n in_o the_o sea_n which_o resemble_v they_o so_o they_o speak_v of_o sea-calve_n sea-horse_n etc._n etc._n wonderful_a strange_a be_v the_o property_n of_o some_o fish_n histor._n which_o the_o almighty_a creator_n have_v give_v they_o pliny_n speak_v of_o a_o little_a fish_n like_o a_o great_a snail_n which_o by_o cleave_v to_o a_o ship_n under_o sail_n and_o drive_v with_o strong_a wind_n will_v stay_v it_o that_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o go_v forward_o and_o that_o even_o about_o his_o own_o time_n the_o galley_n of_o the_o emperor_n caligula_n be_v hold_v fast_o by_o one_o of_o these_o against_o the_o uttermost_a endeavour_n of_o four_o hundred_o mariner_n with_o their_o oar_n it_o be_v strange_a that_o a_o man_n of_o his_o dignity_n and_o place_n in_o the_o commonwealth_n shall_v expose_v himself_o as_o a_o laughingstock_n to_o the_o common_a and_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v true_a how_o wonderful_o do_v it_o set_v forth_o the_o admirable_a power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n and_o in_o this_o particular_a example_n it_o be_v to_o be_v think_v that_o the_o great_a god_n do_v purposely_o befool_v the_o madness_n of_o this_o arrogant_a emperor_n who_o will_v take_v upon_o he_o to_o be_v god_n and_o require_v among_o other_o
over_o they_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o general_a frame_n sect_n 2._o now_o come_v we_o to_o the_o particular_a part_n and_o therein_o let_v we_o consider_v i._o those_o that_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o rest_n namely_o the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n 1._o for_o the_o blood_n you_o know_v it_o be_v a_o excellent_a part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n insomuch_o that_o the_o blood_n be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o body_n which_o must_v not_o be_v understand_v direct_o as_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o imply_v as_o if_o the_o life_n of_o a_o man_n be_v nothing_o but_o his_o blood_n for_o that_o be_v not_o possible_a if_o that_o be_v so_o then_o nothing_o can_v live_v which_o have_v no_o blood_n but_o this_o be_v certain_a that_o bee_n and_o many_o other_o like_o creature_n have_v no_o blood_n and_o yet_o have_v life_n it_o will_v also_o follow_v that_o so_o many_o drop_n of_o a_o man_n blood_n as_o he_o lose_v so_o much_o he_o lose_v of_o his_o life_n whereas_o many_o time_n the_o evacuation_n of_o blood_n be_v the_o preservation_n of_o life_n and_o that_o which_o be_v most_o absurd_a it_o will_v follow_v that_o a_o man_n life_n may_v be_v sever_v from_o he_o and_o yet_o remain_v for_o a_o time_n after_o such_o separation_n for_o so_o you_o see_v that_o the_o blood_n of_o man_n and_o of_o other_o creature_n may_v be_v keep_v a_o long_a time_n in_o vessel_n after_o it_o be_v sever_v from_o the_o body_n and_o beside_o all_o this_o the_o angel_n who_o have_v neither_o blood_n nor_o other_o bodily_a part_n have_v life_n in_o great_a perfection_n than_o a_o man_n thus_o than_o we_o understand_v these_o place_n that_o speak_v of_o the_o the_o blood_n that_o it_o be_v a_o special_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o life_n be_v convey_v to_o the_o several_a part_n of_o the_o body_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o airy_a invisible_a substance_n yet_o bodily_a arise_v like_o vapour_n â—rom_o the_o pure_a part_n of_o the_o blood_n for_o although_o it_o be_v say_v the_o life_n be_v in_o the_o blood_n yet_o this_o be_v because_o the_o blood_n be_v a_o thing_n which_o be_v more_o obvious_a to_o the_o sense_n than_o the_o spirit_n and_o again_o because_o it_o be_v the_o nursery_n and_o as_o it_o be_v the_o fuel_n of_o the_o spirit_n whereby_o as_o by_o a_o precious_a oil_n the_o lamp_n and_o flame_n of_o life_n be_v cherish_v and_o maintain_v so_o that_o life_n be_v more_o immediate_o in_o the_o spirit_n than_o in_o the_o blood_n again_o life_n be_v lose_v by_o the_o shed_n of_o the_o blood_n because_o the_o spirit_n the_o immediate_a instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o it_o communicate_v life_n to_o the_o body_n be_v extinguish_v by_o the_o shed_n of_o the_o blood_n because_o they_o have_v the_o least_o grossness_n in_o they_o of_o all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o come_v near_a to_o a_o spiritual_a nature_n and_o these_o be_v indeed_o the_o special_a manner_n employ_v in_o the_o more_o retire_v and_o spiritual_a action_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n in_o the_o serious_a thought_n and_o meditation_n of_o the_o heart_n by_o it_o the_o pain_n or_o delight_n of_o one_o part_n of_o the_o body_n be_v convey_v and_o impart_v to_o the_o rest_n and_o a_o sympathy_n or_o fellow_n feeling_n be_v derive_v from_o one_o to_o the_o other_o and_o in_o these_o the_o singular_a wisdom_n of_o the_o creator_n be_v notable_o manifest_v sect_n 3._o the_o part_n contain_v these_o be_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o be_v consider_v where_o first_o the_o head_n be_v that_o which_o be_v set_v in_o the_o high_a place_n and_o be_v full_a of_o most_o curious_a workmanship_n it_o be_v the_o seat_n both_o of_o the_o outward_a and_o inward_a sense_n and_o as_o all_o the_o outward_a sense_n be_v place_v there_o so_o none_o of_o the_o five_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o any_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n except_o that_o of_o the_o touch_n or_o feeling_n which_o be_v the_o low_a and_o gross_a of_o the_o rest_n there_o be_v the_o eye_n of_o a_o singular_a and_o most_o curious_a make_n which_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o see_v the_o very_a window_n of_o this_o house_n that_o let_v in_o light_n to_o the_o soul_n which_o otherwise_o will_v dwell_v in_o a_o dark_a dungeon_n it_o be_v a_o admirable_a thing_n to_o consider_v how_o by_o the_o wonderful_a power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n all_o colour_n have_v his_o property_n to_o caff_v forth_o a_o resemblance_n and_o image_n of_o themselves_o whicâ—_n by_o the_o air_n be_v convey_v into_o the_o eye_n if_o this_o be_v well_o consider_v and_o understand_v it_o will_v be_v find_v one_o of_o the_o most_o wonderful_a work_n of_o the_o creation_n set_v forth_o the_o creator_n glory_n but_o you_o may_v conceive_v it_o thus_o when_o a_o looking-glass_n be_v hold_v before_o the_o face_n instant_o there_o be_v a_o image_n of_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n wherein_o also_o the_o admirable_a power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n appear_v in_o that_o one_o voice_n issue_v out_o of_o one_o mouth_n shall_v enter_v in_o at_o many_o hundred_o ear_n for_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v grant_v that_o we_o can_v hear_v any_o voice_n or_o noise_n unless_o it_o true_o enter_v into_o our_o ear_n for_o if_o the_o noise_n can_v be_v hear_v to_o the_o earth_n and_o rest_v on_o the_o earth_n man_n be_v deep_o in_o love_n with_o his_o own_o element_n and_o strong_o tie_v to_o it_o in_o his_o affection_n it_o be_v say_v of_o one_o that_o be_v one_o of_o three_o who_o demand_v of_o the_o orracle_n which_o shall_v be_v chief_a and_o hear_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v the_o man_n that_o first_o shall_v kiss_v his_o mother_n he_o fall_v down_o and_o kiss_v the_o earth_n as_o account_v it_o the_o common_a mother_n of_o all_o man_n be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o the_o earth_n that_o they_o embrace_v it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v kiss_v it_o in_o their_o affection_n as_o a_o mother_n out_o of_o who_o womb_n they_o have_v their_o beginning_n although_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n word_n condemn_v this_o folly_n and_o teach_v they_o that_o thus_o do_v they_o shall_v be_v least_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o that_o this_o dote_a love_n of_o the_o world_n be_v enmity_n with_o god_n therefore_o we_o shall_v pray_v earnest_o to_o adulterer_n which_o sin_v against_o the_o whole_a body_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v the_o drunkard_n who_o abuse_v his_o body_n to_o excess_n of_o swill_v and_o drink_v the_o wanton_a that_o abuse_v his_o eye_n to_o careless_a wander_a and_o open_v his_o ear_n to_o vanity_n he_o that_o please_v his_o palate_n and_o love_v his_o pleasure_n more_o than_o god_n he_o that_o think_v his_o body_n give_v he_o for_o no_o other_o purpose_n but_o either_o to_o drudge_n about_o earthly_a thing_n or_o to_o â—ast_v of_o earthly_a delight_n even_o such_o a_o one_o be_v apt_a to_o say_v he_o have_v a_o
