confirmation_n of_o the_o doctrine_n we_o will_v consider_v these_o four_o or_o five_o ground_n or_o reason_n to_o show_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n wherever_o faith_n be_v beget_v and_o that_o most_o intelligible_o in_o they_o that_o be_v at_o age._n 1._o it_o be_v clear_a from_o these_o place_n of_o scripture_n where_o there_o be_v a_o express_a distinction_n and_o difference_n put_v betwixt_o the_o outward_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o this_o inward_a powerful_a efficacious_a work_n of_o grace_n on_o the_o heart_n and_o wherein_o the_o great_a weight_n of_o conversion_n be_v lay_v on_o this_o inward_a work_n and_o not_o on_o the_o outward_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n as_o deut_n 29.4_o where_o the_o lord_n by_o moses_n tell_v the_o people_n how_o many_o thing_n they_o have_v see_v and_o hear_v and_o yet_o say_v he_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o give_v you_o a_o heart_n to_o perceive_v and_o eye_n to_o see_v and_o ear_n to_o hear_v in_o the_o beget_n of_o faith_n and_o in_o work_a conversion_n it_o be_v not_o a_o mediate_a work_n whereby_o he_o only_o persuade_v congruous_o as_o some_o love_n to_o speak_v but_o a_o immediate_a and_o efficacious_a work_n whereby_o with_o mighty_a power_n he_o work_v conversion_n it_o be_v god_n say_v the_o apostle_n phil._n 2_o 13._o that_o work_v in_o you_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o the_o gospel_n on_o the_o lord_n be_v manifest_v his_o arm_n so_o that_o where_o it_o be_v not_o manifest_v this_o work_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o bring_v forth_o and_o where_o it_o be_v manifest_v conviction_n may_v be_v and_o often_o be_v resist_v as_o to_o any_o save_v fruit_n at_o least_o which_o we_o conceive_v to_o be_v that_o which_o stephen_n point_v at_o act_v 7.51_o while_o he_o say_v you_o stiff-necked_a and_o uncircumcised_a in_o heart_n and_o ear_n you_o do_v always_o resist_v the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o your_o father_n do_v so_o do_v you_o and_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o this_o be_v explain_v in_o the_o word_n follow_v which_o of_o the_o prophet_n have_v not_o your_o father_n persecute_v etc._n etc._n even_o their_o contend_v with_o the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o can_v in_o its_o own_o sinful_a act_n so_o then_o we_o say_v when_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o apply_v the_o work_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o convert_v a_o sinner_n that_o work_n be_v never_o frustrate_v but_o it_o always_o have_v necessary_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n renovation_n and_o conversion_n follow_v on_o the_o back_n of_o it_o second_o we_o shall_v a_o little_a confirm_v the_o follow_v a_o come_n to_o he_o as_o a_o rewarder_n of_o diligent_a seeker_n of_o he_o the_o first_o two_o take_v in_o historical_a faith_n for_o to_o believe_v that_o god_n be_v be_v natural_a and_o to_o believe_v that_o god_n be_v faithful_a in_o his_o promise_n may_v be_v in_o natural_a man_n but_o to_o come_v to_o he_o to_o get_v the_o hazard_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o remove_v through_o jesus_n christ_n be_v a_o thing_n few_o do_v attain_v this_o than_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n we_o will_v be_v aware_a of_o not_o aware_a to_o believe_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n but_o to_o be_v aware_a of_o rest_v on_o it_o as_o save_v faith_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o look_v on_o christ_n and_o to_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v he_o but_o the_o man_n must_v never_o be_v satisfy_v till_o he_o get_v himself_o roll_v on_o christ_n and_o the_o weight_n of_o his_o salvation_n and_o peace_n lay_v on_o he_o in_o his_o own_o way_n the_o second_o thing_n you_o will_v beware_v of_o be_v some_o common_a and_o quick_o transient_a work_n on_o the_o affection_n that_o may_v accompany_v historical_a faith_n whether_o the_o affection_n of_o grief_n or_o the_o affection_n of_o joy_n be_v stir_v thereby_o both_o be_v unsafe_a to_o be_v rest_v on_o when_o you_o can_v prove_v your_o rest_n on_o christ_n or_o where_o there_o be_v no_o relevant_a ground_n to_o prove_v it_o by_o though_o you_o shall_v tremble_v as_o felix_n do_v and_o be_v under_o allarume_v conviction_n of_o conscience_n and_o fear_n of_o your_o hazard_n or_o though_o you_o shall_v be_v affect_v with_o joy_n as_o the_o temporary_a believer_n may_v be_v and_o sometime_o be_v what_o will_v that_o profit_n you_o its_o a_o great_a mistake_n to_o take_v some_o small_a work_n on_o the_o affection_n which_o at_o the_o best_a be_v but_o a_o effect_n of_o historical_a faith_n for_o a_o save_v work_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o second_o if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o effect_n of_o historical_a faith_n it_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o a_o challenge_n of_o conscience_n and_o smite_v of_o the_o heart_n as_o in_o saul_n who_o can_v say_v to_o david_n thou_o be_v more_o righteous_a than_o i_o my_o son_n david_n or_o three_o it_o be_v some_o common_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n such_o as_o be_v in_o simon_n magus_n of_o who_o it_o be_v say_v he_o believe_v and_o who_o can_v say_v pray_v for_o i_o for_o folk_n to_o conclude_v on_o this_o ground_n that_o they_o be_v bring_v out_o of_o nature_n into_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n be_v to_o build_v upon_o a_o sandy_a foundation_n the_o apostle_n speak_v 2_o cor._n 7.10_o of_o worldly_a sorrow_n as_o well_o as_o of_o a_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o as_o there_o may_v be_v a_o worldly_a sorrow_n so_o there_o may_v be_v a_o carnal_a joy_n a_o piece_n of_o fainness_n to_o speak_v so_o in_o prayer_n or_o at_o hear_v of_o a_o preach_a or_o at_o a_o communion_n which_o be_v not_o save_v faith_n some_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n matth._n 13._o who_o yet_o endure_v not_o and_z john_n baptist_n hearer_n rejoice_v in_o his_o light_n for_o a_o season_n even_o as_o a_o sick_a man_n who_o hear_v as_o we_o hint_v before_o that_o a_o physician_n who_o be_v skilful_a and_o able_a to_o cure_v he_o be_v come_v to_o town_n he_o grow_v fain_o in_o the_o contemplation_n of_o a_o cure_n of_o his_o disease_n but_o here_o be_v the_o stick_n when_o the_o physician_n tell_v the_o man_n that_o he_o must_v be_v so_o and_o so_o abstemious_a and_o keep_v himself_o under_o such_o a_o strict_a diet_n he_o thou_fw-mi not_o abide_v that_o and_o so_o all_o his_o joy_n evanish_v there_o be_v something_o like_o this_o in_o tempory_o faith_n where_o some_o remote_a expectation_n of_o salvation_n will_v cause_v a_o carnal_a joy_n and_o fainness_n but_o when_o it_o come_v to_o this_o that_o a_o man_n be_v call_v to_o quit_v his_o lust_n or_o his_o estate_n or_o in_o the_o world_n to_o undergo_v trouble_n and_o persecution_n for_o the_o gospel_n by_o and_o by_o he_o be_v offend_v he_o think_v to_o say_v so_o a_o fowl_n in_o his_o hand_n be_v worth_a two_o flee_v and_o therefore_o when_o the_o storm_n blow_v in_o his_o tooth_n he_o turn_v his_o back_n and_o run_v away_o especial_o we_o will_v find_v this_o to_o be_v with_o man_n in_o sickness_n they_o will_v have_v mint_n and_o seriousness_n and_o sometime_o flash_v of_o sorrow_n under_o conviction_n or_o challenge_n and_o sometime_o flash_v of_o joy_n that_o will_v evanish_v when_o they_o come_v to_o health_n again_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o some_o common_a work_n on_o the_o affection_n we_o will_v take_v in_o liberty_n and_o some_o warmness_n of_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n which_o no_o question_n even_o unrenewed_a man_n may_v find_v more_o at_o one_o time_n than_o another_o as_o when_o they_o be_v in_o some_o great_a hazard_n or_o straight_o they_o will_v be_v more_o than_o ordinary_a serious_a in_o that_o duty_n and_o yet_o that_o may_v be_v but_o a_o effect_n of_o nature_n this_o prove_v a_o great_a stumble_v and_o neck-break_a to_o many_o that_o they_o think_v they_o be_v well_o enough_o if_o now_o and_o then_o they_o get_v utterance_n in_o prayer_n as_o sometime_o they_o will_v get_v word_n beyond_o what_o they_o expect_v and_o when_o upon_o reflect_v they_o find_v that_o

spirit_n and_o the_o gracious_a gift_n of_o god_n it_o be_v wrought_v by_o the_o exceed_a mighty_a power_n of_o god_n whereby_o he_o raise_v christ_n from_o the_o dead_a and_o by_o that_o same_o power_n he_o work_v in_o they_o that_o believe_v now_o know_v you_o ever_o what_o this_o work_n mean_v find_v you_o it_o ever_o to_o be_v a_o difficult_a work_n to_o believe_v know_v you_o ever_o what_o it_o be_v to_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n constrain_a your_o heart_n to_o believe_v i_o speak_v not_o of_o any_o extraordinary_a thing_n but_o certain_o faith_n be_v not_o natural_a nor_o come_v from_o pure_a nature_n and_o wherever_o it_o be_v it_o manifest_v itself_o by_o work_n and_o evidence_v the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o work_n thereof_o there_o be_v some_o sad_a evidence_n of_o and_o bitter_a fruit_n that_o spring_v from_o this_o root_n to_o wit_n folk_n be_v stranger_n to_o the_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n as_o 1._o when_o man_n know_v no_o more_o difficulty_n to_o get_v christ_n and_o to_o rest_v on_o christ_n then_o to_o believe_v a_o story_n of_o wallace_n or_o of_o julius_n cesar_n 2._o when_o folk_n say_v that_o they_o believe_v all_o their_o day_n and_o believe_v always_o since_o ever_o they_o know_v good_a by_o ill_n and_o though_o their_o faith_n be_v no_o true_a save_v faith_n but_o a_o guess_v yet_o they_o will_v not_o quit_v it_o yea_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o man_n to_o get_v they_o convince_v that_o they_o want_v faith_n 3._o when_o man_n never_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v without_o faith_n it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o great_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n john_n 16.8_o to_o convince_v of_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n folk_n will_v be_v easy_o convince_v that_o breach_n of_o the_o sabbath_n that_o steal_v that_o bear_v false_a witness_n etc._n etc._n be_v sin_n where_o the_o special_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o but_o how_o many_o of_o you_o have_v be_v convince_v of_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n we_o be_v constrain_v to_o say_v this_o sad_a word_n when_o we_o look_v on_o this_o text_n that_o it_o be_v lamentable_o fulfil_v in_o your_o eye_n and_o in_o this_o our_o congregation_n think_v not_o that_o we_o wrong_v such_o of_o you_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n ah_o it_o be_v few_o even_o very_a few_o of_o you_o that_o receive_v and_o believe_v this_o gospel_n use_v 2._o the_o second_o use_n be_v for_o conviction_n if_o it_o be_v ordinary_a for_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n not_o to_o believe_v let_v it_o sink_v in_o your_o heart_n that_o it_o be_v no_o extraordinary_a thing_n that_o have_v befall_v you_o be_v you_o not_o such_o hearer_n as_o many_o of_o these_o be_v who_o hear_v isaiah_n and_o jesus_n christ_n and_o if_o so_o will_v not_o this_o follow_v that_o there_o be_v many_o yea_o even_o the_o thick_a and_o throng_v of_o the_o hearer_n of_o this_o gospel_n that_o believe_v not_o and_o who_o if_o christ_n be_v gather_v sinner_n by_o this_o preach_v gospel_n will_v not_o be_v gather_v if_o where_o the_o gospel_n come_v many_o do_v not_o believe_v than_o here_o in_o this_o city_n where_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v to_o a_o great_a multitude_n of_o profess_v member_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n there_o be_v ready_o many_o that_o do_v not_o believe_v or_o let_v i_o ask_v of_o you_o a_o reason_n why_o you_o do_v except_o yourselves_o either_o this_o truth_n hold_v not_o so_o universal_o or_o many_o of_o you_o must_v fall_v under_o it_o or_o else_o give_v a_o reason_n why_o you_o fall_v not_o under_o it_o the_o truth_n which_o isaiah_n preach_v have_v be_v preach_v to_o you_o and_o yet_o you_o remain_v unbelieving_a and_o despiser_n of_o the_o invitation_n to_o the_o marriage_n of_o the_o king_n son_n as_o the_o jew_n do_v we_o be_v not_o now_o speak_v of_o jew_n turk_n nor_o heathen_n nor_o of_o the_o church_n in_o general_a nor_o of_o other_o congregation_n word_n the_o application_n flow_v native_o from_o the_o text_n not_o from_o necessity_n of_o the_o thing_n but_o from_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o man_n corruption_n be_v not_o the_o same_o evidence_n of_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n which_o we_o speak_v of_o among_o you_o how_o many_o be_v there_o in_o their_o life_n profane_a how_o many_o rest_n on_o civility_n and_o formality_n be_v there_o not_o as_o little_a repentance_n now_o as_o be_v in_o isaiah_n time_n as_o little_o deny_v of_o our_o own_o righteousness_n and_o make_v use_n of_o christ_n though_o the_o word_n be_v teach_v by_o line_n upon_o line_n here_o a_o little_a and_o there_o a_o little_a it_o may_v be_v though_o you_o think_v that_o the_o doctrine_n be_v true_a in_o the_o general_n you_o will_v not_o you_o can_v digest_v the_o application_n that_o among_o so_o many_o of_o you_o visible_a professor_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v but_o few_o real_a believer_n therefore_o we_o shall_v follow_v the_o conviction_n slide_v as_o they_o be_v what_o sort_n of_o folk_n be_v they_o that_o be_v unfruitful_a hearer_n be_v they_o not_o member_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n as_o you_o be_v circumcise_v under_o the_o old_a testament_n as_o you_o be_v baptize_v under_o the_o new_a be_v it_o not_o these_o who_o have_v christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n preach_v to_o they_o yea_o they_o be_v not_o among_o the_o more_o ignorant_a sort_n who_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o these_o not_o of_o the_o profane_v sort_n only_o but_o such_o as_o come_v to_o church_n and_o attend_v on_o ordinance_n as_o you_o do_v yea_o be_v such_o as_o have_v gift_n and_o cast_v out_o devil_n and_o preach_v in_o christ_n name_n as_o you_o may_v see_v luk._n 13.26_o now_o when_o there_o be_v so_o many_o and_o of_o such_o rank_n who_o get_v no_o good_a of_o the_o word_n and_o of_o such_o a_o great_a many_o that_o will_v seek_v to_o enter_v in_o and_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o who_o be_v unable_a yet_o where_o the_o gospel_n come_v that_o be_v not_o the_o contraversie_n but_o that_o folk_n will_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n will_v not_o be_v gather_v that_o when_o he_o will_v they_o will_v not_o for_o where_o there_o be_v a_o will_n to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v go_v together_o but_o it_o be_v enmity_n at_o the_o way_n of_o believe_v security_n stupidity_n senselesness_n and_o carelessness_n what_o become_v of_o the_o immortal_a soul_n that_o ruin_n folk_n for_o the_o soul_n that_o will_v fain_o be_v at_o christ_n shall_v be_v help_v to_o believe_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o of_o the_o mediator_n thereof_o be_v such_o that_o all_o to_o who_o he_o give_v to_o will_n he_o give_v they_o also_o to_o perform_v and_o his_o faithfulness_n be_v engage_v so_o to_o do_v it_o must_v therefore_o return_v to_o one_o of_o these_o two_o that_o either_o you_o will_v not_o receive_v he_o or_o else_o you_o be_v willing_a though_o weak_a and_o if_o you_o be_v willing_a faithful_a be_v he_o that_o have_v call_v you_o who_o also_o will_v do_v it_o but_o if_o it_o halt_v at_o your_o perverseness_n and_o wilful_a refusal_n of_o the_o offer_n there_o be_v good_a reason_n that_o in_o god_n justice_n you_o shall_v never_o get_v good_a of_o the_o gospel_n nay_o there_o be_v never_o one_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n come_v and_o who_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o formal_o as_o it_o be_v he_o pass_v a_o sentence_n on_o himself_o as_o the_o word_n be_v act._n 13_o 46._o you_o judge_v yourselves_o unworthy_a of_o eternal_a life_n which_o the_o apostle_n gather_v from_o this_o ground_n that_o they_o do_v not_o neither_o will_v accept_v of_o jesus_n christ_n offer_v to_o they_o in_o the_o gospel_n as_o the_o event_n be_v that_o follow_v on_o the_o offer_n so_o will_v the_o lord_n account_n of_o your_o receive_n of_o it_o four_o as_o for_o direction_n to_o help_v and_o further_o you_o to_o believe_v it_o be_v not_o easy_a but_o very_o difficult_a to_o give_v they_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o satisfy_v the_o curiosity_n of_o nature_n neither_o can_v any_o direction_n be_v prescribe_v that_o without_o the_o special_a work_n of_o god_n spirit_n can_v effectuate_v the_o thing_n the_o renew_n of_o the_o will_n and_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n be_v effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o omnipotent_a grace_n yet_o because_o something_o lie_v upon_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o duty_n and_o it_o be_v more_o suitable_a and_o congruous_a that_o in_o the_o use_n of_o mean_n than_o when_o mean_n be_v neglect_v believe_v shall_v be_v attain_v and_o because_o oftentimes_o these_o that_o desire_v this_o question_n to_o be_v answer_v to_o wit_n how_o they_o may_v win_v at_o believe_v be_v such_o as_o have_v some_o beginning_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o of_o faith_n we_o shall_v speak_v a_o few_o word_n to_o such_o as_o will_v be_v at_o believe_v and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n on_o jesus_n christ_n and_o 1._o folk_n have_v need_v to_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o common_a fundamental_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o will_v know_v what_o their_o natural_a estate_n be_v what_o their_o sin_n and_o misery_n be_v and_o they_o will_v know_v the_o way_n how_o to_o win_v out_o of_o that_o state_n ignorance_n often_o obstruct_v we_o in_o the_o way_n of_o believe_v how_o shall_v they_o believe_v on_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v rom._n 10.14_o when_o folk_n believe_v not_o it_o be_v as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o hear_v 2._o when_o you_o have_v attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o common_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o of_o your_o sin_n and_o misery_n the_o nature_n of_o the_o covenant_n the_o mediator_n and_o his_o fullness_n etc._n etc._n labour_v to_o fix_v well_o the_o historical_a faith_n of_o they_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o many_o never_o come_v this_o length_n to_o believe_v the_o history_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o till_o that_o be_v they_o can_v advance_v no_o further_o for_o as_o the_o word_n be_v heb._n 11.6_o he_o that_o come_v to_o god_n must_v believe_v that_o he_o be_v and_o a_o rewarder_n of_o they_o that_o diligent_o seek_v he_o i_o say_v these_o common_a simple_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n will_v well_o be_v fix_v by_o a_o historical_a faith_n and_o yet_o this_o will_v not_o be_v rest_v on_o because_o though_o they_o be_v excellent_a truth_n yet_o they_o may_v be_v know_v and_o historical_o believe_v where_o save_v faith_n and_o salvation_n follow_v not_o 3._o be_v much_o in_o think_v meditate_v and_o ponder_v of_o and_o on_o these_o thing_n let_v they_o sink_v down_o into_o your_o heart_n that_o the_o meditation_n of_o they_o may_v fix_v the_o faith_n of_o they_o and_o that_o they_o may_v deep_o affect_v we_o we_o will_v seek_v to_o have_v a_o moral_o serious_a feel_n of_o they_o as_o we_o have_v of_o the_o common_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o there_o be_v many_o like_o the_o way_n sidehearer_n who_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o hear_v the_o word_n some_o devil_n like_o a_o crow_n come_v and_o pick_v it_o up_o therefore_o to_o prevent_v this_o you_o will_v seek_v to_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n dwell_v rich_o in_o you_o you_o will_v meditate_v on_o it_o till_o you_o be_v convince_v of_o your_o hazard_n and_o get_v the_o affection_n some_o way_n stir_v according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o word_n you_o meditate_v upon_o whether_o threaten_n or_o promise_n the_o most_o part_n be_v affect_v with_o nothing_o they_o know_v not_o what_o it_o be_v to_o tremble_v at_o a_o threaten_v nor_o smile_v as_o it_o be_v on_o a_o promise_n through_o their_o not_o dwell_v on_o the_o thought_n of_o the_o word_n that_o it_o may_v produce_v such_o a_o effect_n 4._o when_o this_o of_o the_o gospel_n for_o thus_o it_o be_v reveal_v to_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o be_v in_o this_o respect_n not_o keep_v hide_v but_o bring_v forth_o clear_o to_o they_o in_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o second_o the_o reveal_n of_o this_o arm_n or_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o subjective_n inward_a manife_v of_o it_o with_o efficacy_n and_o life_n to_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o effectual_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o great_a thing_n prepare_v for_o they_o that_o love_n the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n a_o distinct_a inward_a peculiar_a real_a immediate_a efficacious_a and_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n requisite_a and_o necessary_a for_o conversion_n and_o beget_n of_o faith_n to_o convince_v of_o sin_n and_o to_o humble_a for_o it_o to_o enlighten_v the_o mind_n in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n to_o renew_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n and_o to_o persuade_v and_o enable_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o sinner_n to_o embrace_v and_o receive_v jesus_n christ_n as_o he_o be_v offer_v in_o the_o gospel_n we_o shall_v first_o take_v as_o well_o as_o the_o word_n speak_v to_o the_o ear_n so_o that_o this_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o go_v along_o in_o conversion_n be_v much_o more_o than_o any_o external_a persuasion_n of_o the_o preach_v word_n can_v produce_v 3._o we_o say_v it_o be_v a_o peculiar_a work_n to_o difference_n it_o from_o what_o be_v common_a to_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o it_o be_v a_o work_n that_o be_v peculiar_a to_o they_o who_o the_o lord_n convert_v and_o be_v apply_v to_o none_o other_o but_o to_o those_o in_o who_o he_o work_v faith_n and_o who_o he_o effectual_o call_v by_o his_o grace_n it_o be_v a_o peculiar_a work_n then_o and_o not_o common_a for_o if_o it_o be_v common_a to_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o not_o peculiar_a to_o some_o these_o two_o can_v not_o go_v together_o and_o be_v commensurable_a as_o we_o say_v who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o to_o who_o be_v the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n reveal_v 4._o we_o say_v it_o be_v a_o real_a work_n as_o well_o as_o powerful_a a_o real_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v not_o only_o able_a and_o powerful_a to_o produce_v the_o effect_n and_o to_o convert_v the_o sinner_n but_o real_a and_o powerful_a in_o produce_v and_o bring_v of_o it_o about_o and_o to_o pass_v by_o a_o real_a influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n actual_o renew_v the_o will_n infuse_v and_o create_v the_o habit_n of_o grace_n &_o particular_o the_o very_a habit_n of_o faith_n among_o other_o in_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v quite_o a_o other_o thing_n then_o the_o suppose_n and_o say_v that_o a_o man_n except_o he_o have_v suffer_v there_o be_v a_o will_n of_o separation_n and_o partition_n stand_v betwixt_o god_n and_o we_o which_o by_o his_o suffering_n be_v demolish_v and_o break_v down_o and_o the_o better_a part_n which_o will_v never_o be_v take_v from_o they_o who_o choice_n through_o grace_n it_o be_v god_n will_v give_v great_a estate_n country_n and_o kingdom_n in_o the_o world_n to_o man_n to_o who_o he_o will_v not_o give_v so_o much_o faith_n as_o be_v like_o a_o grain_n of_o mustard_n seed_n nor_o a_o dram_n of_o true_a holiness_n because_o he_o think_v much_o less_o of_o the_o one_o then_o of_o the_o other_o and_o because_o the_o one_o be_v not_o so_o like_a god_n nor_o will_v it_o have_v such_o abide_a fruit_n as_o the_o other_o 2_o what_o way_n may_v folk_n win_v to_o make_v this_o choice_n and_o to_o attain_v these_o best_a and_o most_o valuable_a thing_n no_o other_o way_n but_o that_o which_o this_o doctrine_n hold_v out_o if_o all_o thing_n that_o lead_v to_o life_n and_o salvation_n be_v fruit_n of_o christ_n purchase_n then_o sure_o it_o be_v by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n purchase_n alone_o that_o you_o must_v come_v by_o they_o pardon_v of_o sin_n come_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o sprinkle_v peace_n with_o god_n grace_n and_o more_o grace_n the_o exercise_n of_o grace_n and_o growth_n in_o holiness_n faith_n in_o all_o its_o exercise_n and_o advance_n and_o every_o other_o grace_n come_v by_o his_o suffering_n as_o also_o do_v glory_n because_o he_o have_v purchase_v these_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o well_o as_o pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o
