they_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o such_o breach_n of_o god_n righteous_a law_n as_o by_o scripture-testimony_n may_v be_v apply_v to_o their_o consideration_n and_o ofttimes_o to_o their_o very_a condition_n of_o which_o nature_n be_v my_o sober_a expostulation_n ground_v upon_o manifest_a error_n and_o abuse_n of_o a_o society_n of_o people_n in_o that_o which_o most_o near_o concern_v they_o for_o this_o cause_n it_o be_v he_o bespatter_v i_o and_o term_n i_o a_o provoke_a and_o affront_a adversary_n if_o this_o humour_n shall_v have_v prevail_v in_o the_o apostle_n day_n what_o work_n ignominious_a reflection_n on_o the_o quaker_n in_o render_v they_o dark_a awkward_a untoward_a and_o unprincipled_a in_o the_o way_n of_o represent_v their_o principle_n viz._n the_o light_n within_o thereby_o discredit_v one_o of_o the_o noble_a theory_n in_o the_o world_n i_o apply_v to_o he_o some_o scripture-text_n particular_o that_o of_o the_o 18_o the_o of_o matthew_n where_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n christ_n exhort_v his_o disciple_n to_o avoid_v offend_v one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o charge_v they_o vers._n 10._o take_v heed_n that_o you_o despise_v not_o one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o and_o from_o thence_o i_o proceed_v and_o say_v i_o fear_v thou_o be_v guilty_a in_o this_o particular_a viz._n of_o despise_v the_o testimony_n of_o god_n in_o his_o principle_n lodge_v in_o every_o man_n breast_n which_o extend_v as_o far_o as_o all_o truth_n whereby_o it_o be_v perceive_v and_o understand_v why_o then_o may_v not_o the_o quaker_n be_v partaker_n of_o divine_a inspiration_n as_o well_o as_o other_o see_v it_o be_v necessary_a for_o all_o true_a christian_n to_o know_v and_o experience_n there_o be_v a_o spirit_n in_o man_n say_v elihu_n and_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o almighty_a give_v understanding_n job_n 32.8_o and_o by_o the_o lithurgy_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n all_o be_v instruct_v to_o pray_v for_o it_o testimony_n against_o their_o lewdness_n and_o profaneness_n and_o if_o so_o consider_v be_v it_o not_o a_o encouragement_n to_o a_o lewd_a crew_n to_o commit_v the_o like_a rudeness_n as_o have_v be_v practise_v upon_o the_o quaker_n when_o they_o find_v it_o tickle_v the_o fancy_n and_o afford_v a_o pleasant_a jest_n to_o a_o fellow_n of_o their_o college_n whatever_o he_o think_v of_o his_o manifest_a abuse_n of_o the_o quaker_n both_o in_o misrepresent_v their_o principle_n and_o villify_n and_o reproach_v they_o and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o the_o aforementioned_a term_n of_o dark_a awkward_a and_o untoward_a but_o in_o render_v they_o in_o general_a gross_o ignorant_a as_o be_v neither_o rational_a nor_o intelligible_a in_o their_o account_n of_o their_o light_n within_o because_o they_o have_v not_o reduce_v it_o to_o such_o a_o philosophical_a notion_n as_o he_o affect_v viz._n the_o omniformity_n of_o the_o ideal_o world_n though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n he_o say_v they_o confirm_v it_o with_o the_o authority_n of_o st._n john_n be_v gospel_n be_v not_o the_o consequence_n of_o this_o a_o manifest_a overvalue_a his_o own_o notion_n and_o waâ—_n of_o explain_v the_o light_n within_o beyond_o and_o above_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n wherewith_o the_o holy_a evangelist_n be_v divine_o inspire_v and_o instruct_v and_o do_v not_o this_o spring_n from_o self-love_n and_o esteem_n and_o do_v not_o that_o blind_a the_o eye_n and_o cause_v the_o tongue_n to_o speak_v unrighteous_a thing_n and_o when_o self_n love_n and_o esteem_n get_v up_o where_o do_v it_o sit_v but_o in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n may_v i_o not_o hence_o say_v be_v thou_o not_o deck_v thyself_o with_o thy_o corrupt_a wisdom_n which_o be_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o will_v prove_v folly_n in_o the_o end_n by_o corrupt_a wisdom_n i_o mean_v not_o as_o he_o wrong_o insinuate_v human_a learning_n in_o gross_a but_o the_o querk_a wit_n and_o unsanctified_a reason_n of_o man_n in_o the_o mis-use_a or_o abuse_v of_o it_o something_o like_o this_o be_v his_o own_o phrase_n on_o himself_o viz._n his_o unlucky_a fancy_n pag._n 4._o where_o he_o make_v a_o scoff_n at_o i_o about_o the_o light_n within_o in_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o he_o have_v exchange_v his_o cold_a quake_a sit_v for_o a_o hot_a one_o and_o that_o the_o light_n within_o be_v turn_v into_o a_o flameâ—_n the_o bare_a mention_v of_o which_o shall_v suffice_v be_v a_o plain_a discovery_n of_o his_o frothy_a wit_n and_o corrupt_a wisdom_n which_o be_v far_o manifest_v in_o his_o charge_n against_o the_o quaker_n in_o his_o postscript_n where_o he_o tax_v their_o make_a use_n of_o those_o divine_a word_n and_o expression_n of_o john_n the_o holy_a evangelist_n in_o confirmation_n of_o their_o principle_n of_o the_o light_n within_o as_o loose_v and_o cant_a and_o which_o i_o say_v look_n too_o much_o like_o prophanenss_n and_o all_o this_o join_v with_o as_o positive_a as_o uncharitable_a assertion_n viz._n that_o they_o understand_v neither_o the_o light_n they_o profess_v nor_o st._n john_n gospel_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o some_o other_o query_n viz._n what_o be_v thou_o o_o man_n that_o boasâ—eth_v thyself_o be_v thou_o wise_a than_o thy_o maker_n who_o wisdom_n have_v bring_v forth_o and_o teach_v his_o people_n those_o expression_n can_v thou_o by_o search_v find_v out_o god_n or_o the_o almighty_a â—â—to_fw-mi perfection_n i_o tell_v thou_o nay_o and_o here_o without_o pretend_v to_o be_v prophet_n i_o may_v and_o the_o deep_a thing_n of_o god_n different_a in_o its_o mode_n and_o manner_n of_o its_o operation_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o different_a nature_n of_o the_o knowledge_n and_o subject_n it_o work_v very_a grace_n of_o christ_n whereby_o man_n be_v convert_v and_o save_v quote_v r._n b._n again_o in_o the_o 5_o and_o 6_o proposition_n pag._n 317._o where_o reckon_v up_o the_o end_n and_o purpose_n for_o which_o this_o save_n and_o spiritual_a light_n be_v give_v by_o god_n make_v they_o consist_v in_o make_v manifest_a all_o thing_n that_o be_v reprovable_a in_o teach_v all_o repentance_n righteousness_n and_o godliness_n and_o in_o general_a enlighten_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n i_o think_v this_o be_v a_o very_a good_a account_n of_o the_o how_o can_v he_o make_v this_o to_o be_v the_o consequence_n of_o r._n b_n proposition_n do_v he_o not_o herein_o as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o former_a quotation_n manifest_o abuse_v his_o ingenious_a one_o and_o the_o same_o with_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n because_o christ_n be_v so_o reveal_v in_o spirit_n as_o plain_o appear_v joh._n 16._o consequent_o no_o creature_n or_o material_a creature_n as_o j._n n._n represent_v it_o but_o a_o divine_a and_o immaterial_a substance_n wherein_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o a_o most_o heinous_a presumption_n and_o defamation_n of_o the_o quaker_n the_o same_o in_o be_v consequent_o j._n n._n in_o make_v the_o quaker_n principle_n of_o the_o light_n thus_o consider_v and_o by_o he_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v hold_v by_o the_o quaker_n to_o be_v a_o creature_n and_o a_o material_a creature_n be_v to_o make_v christ_n his_o spirit_n and_o life_n so_o too_o which_o be_v not_o only_o a_o wilful_a abuse_n of_o the_o quaker_n but_o a_o gross_a conduct_n of_o human_a life_n etc._n etc._n wherein_o i_o then_o think_v and_o still_o do_v he_o have_v great_o abuse_v the_o quaker_n and_o misrepresent_v their_o principle_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n which_o i_o apprehend_v be_v by_o i_o sufficient_o manifest_v however_o by_o this_o occasion_n may_v now_o more_o full_o appear_v this_o induce_v i_o to_o use_v these_o expression_n viz._n that_o i_o be_v and_o still_o be_o please_v with_o all_o that_o tend_v to_o the_o propagation_n of_o original_a &_o necessary_a truth_n but_o rejoice_v where_o i_o find_v it_o spring_v from_o a_o upright_a mind_n pure_a intention_n and_o clean_a vessel_n for_o whoso_o undertake_v to_o reprehend_v the_o intelligible_a conduct_n of_o human_a life_n ought_v first_o to_o purge_v himself_o from_o modesty_n i_o think_v as_o can_v well_o be_v express_v avoid_v the_o charge_n till_o i_o come_v to_o the_o particular_a instance_n of_o his_o misrepresentation_n and_o unjust_a reflection_n which_o i_o then_o prove_v and_o thereto_o refer_v and_o if_o upon_o the_o whole_a it_o shall_v so_o appear_v to_o the_o understanding_n and_o conscience_n of_o the_o reader_n i._n n._n have_v already_o grant_v i_o his_o ignorance_n of_o the_o quaker_n principle_n how_o little_a soever_o it_o otherwise_o concern_v he_o to_o know_v they_o will_v not_o excuse_v his_o misrepresent_v they_o consequent_o i_o hope_v he_o will_v grant_v his_o have_v so_o do_v will_v not_o only_o excuse_v but_o justify_v i_o in_o charge_v it_o upon_o he_o provide_v i_o do_v it_o in_o a_o christian_a frame_n and_o spirit_n which_o be_v the_o next_o thing_n i_o have_v to_o observe_v viz._n that_o i._n n._n charge_v i_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o passion_n and_o angry_a resentment_n in_o my_o do_v it_o as_o also_o rudeness_n and_o incivility_n and_o again_o that_o i_o fall_v foul_a of_o he_o in_o such_o a_o rude_a violent_a and_o passionate_a manner_n as_o be_v below_o the_o breed_n of_o a_o waterman_n here_o he_o misrepresent_v my_o temper_n see_v to_o be_v blunt_a and_o plain_a be_v one_o thing_n and_o to_o be_v rude_a violent_a and_o passionate_a be_v another_o i_o see_v not_o whence_o he_o fix_v this_o character_n on_o i_o of_o rude_a violent_a and_o passionate_a unless_o from_o a_o pretence_n of_o a_o spiritual_a discern_a because_o i_o have_v not_o use_v any_o scandalous_a or_o uncivil_a language_n to_o occasion_v such_o a_o censure_n which_o i_o confess_v be_v a_o fault_n in_o i_o be_v i_o guilty_a of_o it_o but_o i_o have_v serious_o consider_v of_o what_o i_o write_v the_o matter_n manner_n and_o design_n of_o it_o and_o be_o well_o satisfy_v i_o be_o innocent_a of_o this_o charge_n have_v not_o deal_v uncivil_o or_o unfair_o though_o downright_a and_o plain_o in_o my_o language_n and_o expression_n god_n the_o righteous_a judge_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n that_o know_v the_o secret_n of_o all_o heart_n and_o know_v how_o much_o either_o he_o or_o i_o be_v concern_v in_o those_o scripture_n application_n judge_v between_o he_o and_o i_o in_o this_o matter_n i_o confess_v i_o treat_v he_o as_o a_o adversary_n to_o the_o truth_n but_o still_o just_o and_o measure_n of_o passion_n he_o have_v use_v or_o do_v allow_v himself_o i_o will_v not_o undertake_v to_o define_v but_o sure_o i_o be_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o that_o rudeness_n and_o scurrility_n from_o his_o forego_v word_n what_o doubtless_o j._n n._n design_o avoid_v i_o shall_v do_v viz._n repeat_v his_o follow_a word_n which_o be_v these_o and_o even_o as_o the_o moon_n borrow_v her_o light_n from_o the_o sun_n so_o ought_v man_n if_o they_o will_v be_v right_o and_o comfortable_o order_v in_o natural_a thing_n to_o have_v their_o reason_n enlighten_v by_o this_o divine_a and_o pure_a light_n thus_o j._n n._n abuse_v his_o ingenious_a author_n not_o only_o conceal_v but_o pervert_v his_o sense_n but_o to_o consider_v the_o matter_n a_o little_a further_o will_v his_o conclusion_n hold_v be_v his_o consequence_n upon_o the_o first_o part_n of_o his_o quotation_n fair_o and_o equal_o apply_v doubtless_o he_o know_v the_o contrary_a though_o he_o catch_v at_o any_o thing_n to_o serve_v his_o purpose_n will_v he_o not_o consider_v the_o disparity_n of_o the_o subject_n their_o disproportion_n with_o respect_n to_o their_o primitive_a station_n and_o order_n object_v that_o this_o necessary_o employ_v its_o actual_a operation_n upon_o the_o understanding_n which_o to_o say_v as_o i_o do_v the_o light_n be_v always_o in_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n present_a in_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o imply_v nor_o necessary_o infer_v its_o actual_a operation_n therein_o at_o all_o time_n therefore_o his_o consequence_n on_o i_o vanish_v and_o his_o own_o assertion_n viz._n that_o his_o light_n be_v always_o present_a to_o his_o understanding_n and_o intimate_o unite_v with_o it_o and_o yet_o that_o it_o do_v not_o formal_o enlighten_v or_o instruct_v it_o but_o when_o attend_v to_o and_o consult_v carry_v a_o contradiction_n in_o itself_o beside_o i_o show_v how_o he_o mistake_v the_o nature_n of_o intimate_a union_n which_o he_o place_n in_o
