they_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o such_o breach_n of_o god_n righteous_a law_n as_o by_o scripture-testimony_n may_v be_v apply_v to_o their_o consideration_n and_o ofttimes_o to_o their_o very_a condition_n of_o which_o nature_n be_v my_o sober_a expostulation_n ground_v upon_o manifest_a error_n and_o abuse_n of_o a_o society_n of_o people_n in_o that_o which_o most_o near_o concern_v they_o for_o this_o cause_n it_o be_v he_o bespatter_v i_o and_o term_n i_o a_o provoke_a and_o affront_a adversary_n if_o this_o humour_n shall_v have_v prevail_v in_o the_o apostle_n day_n what_o work_n will_v it_o have_v make_v with_o their_o epistle_n not_o that_o i_o compare_v what_o i_o write_v to_o their_o write_n but_o the_o tendency_n be_v the_o same_o make_v up_o of_o scripture_n quotation_n i_o may_v just_o admire_v his_o treatment_n of_o i_o for_o it_o will_v i._n n._n be_v please_v with_o his_o auditor_n if_o when_o he_o take_v the_o like_a freedom_n in_o the_o pulpit_n to_o determine_v sure_o i_o be_o that_o the_o abuse_n in_o his_o former_a with_o the_o aggravation_n and_o misgovern_a temper_n he_o have_v show_v in_o this_o latter_a treatise_n discover_v a_o want_n of_o rectitude_n of_o will_n and_o affection_n however_o his_o understanding_n be_v and_o now_o have_v so_o far_o insist_v upon_o and_o discover_v the_o subject_n &_o occasion_n of_o this_o offence_n and_o treatment_n thereon_o i_o conceive_v my_o sober_a application_n of_o scripture_n doctrine_n to_o he_o respect_v the_o evil_a of_o those_o snare_n and_o temptation_n of_o the_o enemy_n i_o apprehend_v he_o fall_v into_o as_o well_o as_o personal_a injury_n and_o abuse_n i_o find_v he_o guilty_a of_o will_v vindicate_v my_o undertake_n and_o though_o i_o shall_v be_v severe_a in_o my_o censure_n provide_v it_o be_v true_a and_o well_o ground_v it_o will_v no_o way_n lessen_v or_o violate_v my_o charity_n no_o more_o than_o it_o will_v his_o or_o any_o body_n else_o when_o under_o the_o like_o concern_v have_v thus_o say_v i_o think_v i_o have_v remove_v the_o stress_n of_o his_o objection_n against_o my_o treatment_n of_o he_o to_o his_o own_o door_n and_o here_o it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o instance_n one_o particular_a passage_n of_o i_o and_o show_v the_o use_n he_o have_v make_v of_o it_o by_o which_o the_o rest_n may_v be_v judge_v upon_o occasion_n of_o his_o ignominious_a reflection_n on_o the_o quaker_n in_o render_v they_o dark_a awkward_a untoward_a and_o unprincipled_a in_o the_o way_n of_o represent_v their_o principle_n viz._n the_o light_n within_o thereby_o discredit_v one_o of_o the_o noble_a theory_n in_o the_o world_n i_o apply_v to_o he_o some_o scripture-text_n particular_o that_o of_o the_o 18_o the_o of_o matthew_n where_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n christ_n exhort_v his_o disciple_n to_o avoid_v offend_v one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o charge_v they_o vers._n 10._o take_v heed_n that_o you_o despise_v not_o one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o and_o from_o thence_o i_o proceed_v and_o say_v i_o fear_v thou_o be_v guilty_a in_o this_o particular_a viz._n of_o despise_v the_o testimony_n of_o god_n in_o this_o age_n through_o the_o meanness_n of_o the_o instrument_n consider_v what_o be_v say_v thess._n 4.8_o he_o therefore_o that_o despise_v despise_v not_o man_n but_o god_n who_o have_v also_o i_o know_v no_o body_n pretend_v they_o be_v do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v they_o be_v not_o divine_o inspire_v at_o all_o and_o if_o they_o be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o blasphemous_a piece_n of_o arrogance_n to_o make_v the_o despise_n of_o the_o quaker_n the_o same_o with_o despise_v christ_n sure_o no_o he_o confess_v himself_o if_o that_o be_v prove_v viz._n that_o they_o be_v divine_o inspire_v he_o shall_v allow_v of_o the_o expression_n till_o then_o 8._o he_o beg_v i_o not_o to_o be_v angry_a if_o he_o tell_v i_o it_o put_v he_o in_o mind_n of_o a_o story_n now_o this_o a_o man_n of_o his_o profess_a principle_n shall_v doubt_v it_o see_v he_o say_v the_o divine_a logos_fw-la or_o light_v within_o be_v the_o great_a and_o universal_a oracle_n lodge_v in_o every_o hide_v all_o the_o treasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o be_v it_o not_o intelligible_a truth_n and_o if_o intelligible_a be_v it_o not_o dispense_v and_o convey_v to_o man_n through_o his_o principle_n lodge_v in_o every_o man_n breast_n which_o extend_v as_o far_o as_o all_o truth_n whereby_o it_o be_v perceive_v and_o understand_v why_o then_o may_v not_o the_o quaker_n be_v partaker_n of_o divine_a inspiration_n as_o well_o as_o other_o see_v it_o be_v necessary_a for_o all_o true_a christian_n to_o know_v and_o experience_n there_o be_v a_o spirit_n in_o man_n say_v elihu_n and_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o almighty_a give_v understanding_n job_n 32.8_o and_o by_o the_o lithurgy_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n all_o be_v instruct_v to_o pray_v for_o it_o which_o show_v it_o be_v attainable_a as_o appear_v by_o the_o collect_n in_o these_o word_n lord_n easter_n from_o who_o all_o good_a thing_n do_v come_v grant_v we_o thy_o humble_a servant_n that_o by_o thy_o holy_a inspiration_n we_o may_v think_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a and_o by_o thy_o merciful_a guide_n may_v perform_v the_o same_o through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ._n again_o right_a judgement_n in_o all_o thing_n by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n pray_v for_o whitsun-week_n god_n who_o at_o this_o time_n do_v teach_v the_o heart_n of_o thy_o faithful_a people_n by_o send_v to_o they_o the_o light_n of_o thy_o holy_a spirit_n grant_v
we_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n to_o have_v a_o right_a judgement_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o evermore_o to_o rejoice_v in_o thy_o holy_a comfort_n etc._n etc._n again_o the_o holy_a spirit_n pray_v for_o by_o the_o church_n of_o england_n to_o direct_v in_o all_o thing_n trinity_n o_o god_n for_o asmuch_o as_o without_o thou_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o please_v thou_o merciful_o grant_v that_o qualification_n which_o some_o ignorant_o imagine_v the_o contrary_a be_v ready_a to_o deride_v the_o quaker_n for_o pretend_v to_o whilst_o they_o pray_v for_o it_o themselves_o but_o perhaps_o my_o adversary_n may_v be_v of_o the_o mind_n of_o one_o of_o his_o coat_n who_o late_o tell_v i_o the_o quaker_n be_v no_o christian_n because_o not_o baptize_v mean_v not_o be_v do_v unto_o according_a as_o the_o law_n require_v viz._n sprinkle_a with_o a_o little_a water_n in_o the_o face_n from_o off_o one_o of_o their_o hand_n and_o sign_v with_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n consequent_o the_o despise_n of_o they_o he_o may_v think_v be_v not_o to_o be_v reckon_v as_o despise_v of_o christ._n by_o his_o story_n of_o the_o oxford_n scholar_n pump_v a_o quaker_n i_o be_o incline_v to_o believe_v from_o what_o i_o have_v hear_v of_o the_o extravagant_a and_o notorious_a abuse_n and_o obsceen_n carriage_n and_o behaviour_n of_o many_o of_o the_o say_a scholar_n towards_o the_o quaker_n at_o the_o time_n of_o their_o religious_a exercise_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n that_o it_o be_v not_o improbable_a but_o this_o may_v be_v on_o the_o same_o account_n or_o for_o some_o testimony_n against_o their_o lewdness_n and_o profaneness_n and_o if_o so_o consider_v be_v it_o not_o a_o encouragement_n to_o a_o lewd_a crew_n to_o commit_v the_o like_a rudeness_n as_o have_v be_v practise_v upon_o the_o quaker_n when_o they_o find_v it_o tickle_v the_o fancy_n and_o afford_v a_o pleasant_a jest_n to_o a_o fellow_n of_o their_o college_n whatever_o he_o think_v of_o his_o story_n i_o be_o sure_a he_o have_v make_v a_o ill_a application_n of_o it_o to_o i_o and_o worse_o to_o the_o text_n of_o scripture_n i_o quote_v he_o forasmuch_o as_o it_o tend_v to_o make_v void_a the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n jesus_n employ_v in_o the_o 25_o the_o of_o matthew_n viz_o that_o which_o be_v do_v to_o his_o little_a one_o he_o take_v as_o do_v unto_o himself_o and_o dare_v he_o distinct_o every_o objection_n of_o he_o and_o my_o application_n of_o scripture_n to_o his_o consideration_n with_o observation_n of_o his_o treatment_n thereon_o as_o in_o the_o forego_n instance_n the_o tongue_n to_o speak_v unrighteous_a thing_n be_v not self_o exalt_v to_o sit_v in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n the_o occasion_n and_o reason_n of_o these_o query_n be_v his_o manifest_a abuse_n of_o the_o quaker_n both_o in_o misrepresent_v their_o principle_n and_o villify_n and_o reproach_v they_o and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o the_o aforementioned_a term_n of_o dark_a awkward_a and_o untoward_a but_o in_o render_v they_o in_o general_a gross_o ignorant_a as_o be_v neither_o rational_a nor_o intelligible_a in_o their_o account_n of_o their_o light_n within_o because_o they_o have_v not_o reduce_v it_o to_o such_o a_o philosophical_a notion_n as_o he_o affect_v viz._n the_o omniformity_n of_o the_o ideal_o world_n though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n he_o say_v they_o confirm_v it_o with_o the_o authority_n of_o st._n john_n be_v gospel_n be_v not_o the_o consequence_n of_o this_o a_o manifest_a overvalue_a his_o own_o notion_n and_o waâ—_n of_o explain_v the_o light_n within_o beyond_o and_o above_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n wherewith_o the_o holy_a evangelist_n be_v divine_o inspire_v and_o instruct_v and_o do_v not_o this_o spring_n from_o self-love_n and_o esteem_n and_o do_v not_o that_o blind_a the_o eye_n and_o cause_v the_o tongue_n to_o speak_v unrighteous_a thing_n and_o when_o self_n love_n and_o esteem_n get_v up_o where_o do_v it_o sit_v but_o in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n may_v i_o not_o hence_o say_v be_v thou_o not_o deck_v thyself_o with_o thy_o corrupt_a wisdom_n which_o be_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o will_v prove_v folly_n in_o the_o end_n by_o corrupt_a wisdom_n i_o mean_v not_o as_o he_o wrong_o insinuate_v human_a learning_n in_o gross_a but_o the_o querk_a wit_n and_o unsanctified_a reason_n of_o man_n in_o the_o mis-use_a or_o abuse_v of_o it_o something_o like_o this_o be_v his_o own_o phrase_n on_o himself_o viz._n his_o unlucky_a fancy_n pag._n 4._o where_o he_o make_v a_o scoff_n at_o i_o about_o the_o light_n within_o in_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o he_o have_v exchange_v his_o cold_a quake_a sit_v for_o a_o hot_a one_o and_o that_o the_o light_n within_o be_v turn_v into_o a_o flameâ—_n the_o bare_a mention_v of_o which_o shall_v suffice_v be_v a_o plain_a discovery_n of_o his_o frothy_a wit_n and_o corrupt_a wisdom_n which_o be_v far_o manifest_v in_o his_o charge_n against_o the_o quaker_n in_o his_o postscript_n where_o he_o tax_v their_o make_a use_n of_o those_o divine_a word_n and_o expression_n of_o john_n the_o holy_a evangelist_n in_o confirmation_n of_o their_o principle_n of_o the_o light_n within_o as_o loose_v and_o cant_a and_o which_o i_o say_v look_n too_o much_o like_o prophanenss_n and_o all_o this_o join_v with_o as_o positive_a as_o uncharitable_a assertion_n viz._n that_o they_o understand_v neither_o the_o light_n they_o profess_v nor_o st._n john_n gospel_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o some_o other_o query_n viz._n what_o be_v thou_o o_o man_n that_o boasâ—eth_v thyself_o be_v thou_o wise_a than_o thy_o maker_n who_o wisdom_n have_v bring_v forth_o and_o teach_v his_o people_n those_o expression_n can_v thou_o by_o search_v find_v out_o god_n or_o the_o almighty_a â—â—to_fw-mi perfection_n i_o tell_v thou_o nay_o and_o here_o without_o pretend_v to_o be_v prophet_n i_o may_v and_o do_v say_v that_o god_n will_v confound_v his_o wisdom_n and_o bring_v to_o nought_o his_o understanding_n wherein_o it_o be_v exalt_v i_o pray_v god_n he_o may_v witness_v it_o in_o mercy_n to_o he_o this_o general_a villify_n and_o reproach_v charge_n against_o the_o quaker_n i_o have_v term_v a_o evil_a presumption_n and_o what_o if_o i_o have_v say_v blasphemy_n against_o â—ome_o that_o dwell_v in_o heaven_n be_v there_o not_o such_o a_o thing_n and_o may_v not_o the_o quaker_n as_o many_o of_o they_o as_o true_o love_v and_o fear_n god_n and_o work_v righteousness_n in_o the_o earth_n be_v of_o the_o number_n that_o dwell_v in_o heaven_n how_o dare_v he_o then_o say_v or_o how_o can_v he_o say_v true_o of_o the_o many_o thousand_o he_o know_v not_o that_o they_o neither_o understand_v the_o light_n they_o profess_v nor_o st._n john_n gospel_n without_o blast_v their_o fame_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o i_o take_v occasion_n to_o say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o light_a thing_n to_o speak_v evil_a of_o thing_n
have_v so_o do_v i_o recommend_v thou_o to_o the_o follow_a discourse_n but_o for_o thy_o more_o general_a satisfaction_n to_o the_o work_n of_o that_o decease_a servant_n of_o the_o lord_n robert_n language_n to_o occasion_v such_o a_o censure_n which_o i_o confess_v be_v a_o fault_n in_o i_o be_v i_o guilty_a of_o it_o but_o i_o have_v serious_o consider_v of_o what_o i_o write_v the_o matter_n proceed_v to_o query_n how_o be_v these_o thing_n consistant_fw-la unless_o mr._n vickris_n will_v be_v understand_v not_o of_o condemn_v human_a learning_n in_o general_a as_o corrupt_v but_o only_o of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o object_n of_o my_o particular_a study_n but_o what_o if_o i_o will_v be_v under_o neither_o see_v my_o word_n be_v general_a and_o have_v no_o relation_n to_o either_o one_o or_o the_o other_o be_v there_o not_o a_o better_a sense_n of_o corrupt_a wisdom_n namely_o what_o i_o have_v define_v it_o here_o he_o manifest_o again_o beg_v the_o question_n and_o suppose_v the_o word_n will_v not_o hold_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o human_a learning_n in_o general_a as_o corrupt_v he_o will_v reduce_v it_o to_o the_o object_n of_o his_o particular_a study_n that_o so_o if_o he_o fail_v of_o bring_v i_o under_o a_o contradiction_n to_o myself_o in_o the_o former_a he_o may_v at_o least_o under_o the_o other_o dilemma_n viz._n of_o condemn_v the_o particular_a matter_n of_o his_o study_n as_o corrupt_v and_o so_o guilty_a of_o a_o ignorant_a and_o foolish_a censure_n be_v this_o argue_v like_o a_o philosopher_n or_o be_v it_o not_o rather_o sophistical_a forbid_a fruit_n and_o what_o will_v prove_v folly_n in_o the_o end_n and_o the_o wisdom_n that_o be_v below_o and_o that_o which_o god_n wisdom_n from_o above_o ever_o do_v and_o will_v confound_v answer_v i_o positive_o deny_v his_o assertion_n and_o return_v it_o upon_o he_o as_o a_o down_o right_a falsehood_n and_o have_v already_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o as_o such_o in_o the_o before_o clean_a principle_n and_o such_o as_o can_v consent_v to_o any_o evil_a or_o wickedness_n which_o contradict_v what_o he_o say_v here_o so_o that_o either_o way_n contradiction_n be_v his_o doom_n but_o what_o if_o his_o proposition_n and_o charge_n be_v a_o falsehood_n as_o i_o have_v already_o challenge_v he_o it_o be_v will_v not_o his_o argument_n be_v fallacious_a and_o sophistical_a too_o and_o instead_o of_o contradiction_n to_o be_v my_o doom_n will_v not_o what_o be_v worse_o a_o most_o abusive_a prevarication_n be_v he_o i_o be_o sure_a he_o can_v escape_v this_o sentence_n the_o whole_a matter_n be_v so_o plain_a and_o obvious_a depend_v upon_o the_o truth_n or_o falseness_n of_o the_o charge_n the_o latter_a of_o which_o i_o affirm_v he_o to_o be_v guilty_a of_o so_o need_v no_o argument_n to_o illustrate_v it_o the_o next_o thing_n i_o charge_v j._n n._n with_o as_o a_o abuse_n of_o the_o quaker_n principle_n be_v that_o he_o say_v they_o make_v the_o light_n within_o menâ—_n as_o i_o have_v before_o observe_v whence_o people_n may_v be_v induce_v to_o believe_v the_o quaker_n to_o be_v indeed_o despiser_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o a_o mere_a dead_a letter_n which_o word_n he_o may_v take_v back_o as_o his_o own_o and_o not_o the_o quaker_n since_o he_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o offer_v at_o any_o proof_n for_o they_o my_o charge_n in_o this_o article_n extend_v not_o only_o to_o his_o render_v the_o quaker_n contemptious_a of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n but_o singular_a and_o erroneous_a in_o their_o principle_n of_o the_o light_n and_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o useless_a to_o all_o but_o themselves_o which_o i_o prove_v thus_o 1_o sy_n j._n n._n represent_v the_o quaker_n to_o say_v the_o scripture_n be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a dead_a letter_n without_o the_o light_n 2_o dly_z this_o light_n within_o he_o say_v in_o his_o second_o article_n the_o quaker_n represent_v as_o a_o extraordinary_a inspiration_n whence_o they_o have_v the_o name_n of_o enthusiast_n 3_o dly_z in_o his_o 4_o the_o article_n he_o say_v the_o quaker_n make_v their_o light_n within_o a_o special_a privilege_n of_o a_o certain_a order_n of_o man_n their_o own_o party_n make_v none_o but_o those_o of_o their_o own_o way_n to_o be_v actual_o enlighten_v by_o it_o hence_o it_o will_v inevitable_o follow_v upon_o this_o treeble_a supposition_n that_o he_o represent_v the_o quaker_n as_o be_v before_o mention_v contrary_a to_o their_o know_a constant_a and_o long_o profess_a faith_n and_o doctrine_n j._n n._n grant_v the_o consequence_n but_o then_o to_o avoid_v the_o matter_n object_n to_o the_o proposition_n in_o his_o 4_o the_o article_n that_o it_o be_v not_o absolute_o charge_v upon_o the_o quaker_n by_o he_o 72._o
