Book of Moses there is mention made of many sorts of Offerings especially in the three middle Bookes and above all offerings the burnt offerings are most spoken of as in the 28. Chapter of the Book of Numbers the Lord doth most of all presse those offerings made by fire now what have we to learn by this that our offerings must be spirituall That is our prayers must burne with zeale with ferventnesse and pure affection we must be zealous in prayer and praising God Iames 5.16 Psa 119.7 in uprightnesse of heart our love must bee zealous and fervent to set forth the glorie of God in Jesus Christ zealous of a true justifying lively saving and working faith apprehensively Rom. 3.24 Jam. 2.17 18 21 22 23. to be zealous of repentance to be zealous of obedience to be short that wee be zealous of everie good worke and duty Tit. 2.14 Thus you see what spirituall burnt offerings are and they that have received the Spirit of God in any good measure can and will be zealous and those that have received the spirit of illumination and understanding of Gods Word may and can prove that Ministers of the Gospell ought to have Tithes for their maintenance though it bee in Cities and Townes there it may arise in moneyes But here may very well arise a question how Tithes are to be raised in Cities and Townes not wronging the Parishoners on the one side nor the Pastour and Minister on the other side must the Parishioners pay the tenth penny of their labours I answer No neither are labouring men that live onely by their meer labour to pay Tithes in the Countrey they do not therfore not in the Cities or Towns but if those labouring men or women have a garden or a cow or any thing more then their labour they are to pay the tenth part of it in those Cities and Towns but how must Tithes be paid I answer thus T●● Merchants or Shop-keepers buy in their ware to their shops and then he himselfe or his servant or servants are to attend all the day to sell their ward either by grosse or retaile and then when the night is done that hee hath shut up his shop hee looks in his Cash-box to see what money hee hath taken for that former day and what hee hath sold and what that he sold did cost him then he layes out the moneys it cost him and his charge for his labour and attendance in sale of it to those hee doth employ and layes out of the money for that and then that part that is left is cleare gain● The tenth penny must arise and be paid out of this cleare gaines to the Pastour and Minister of that Congregation and by this meanes those that do in right pay their Tithes shall voyd the curse that is threatened against defrauders of Tithes But there is enough spoken of this before only this All they that shall refuse paying their Tythes to their Pastor or Minister are Church-robbers I do understand there be some that have petitioned the Parliament that Tithes may not be paid unto the Ministers of the Gospell because as they say it is Jewish and Popish O horrible impietie That men should be so gracelesse as to derogate from the word of God and also to abuse the power and authoritie of the King and the most Honourable and Supreame Court of Parliament making it a Bawd to their sinister designes If those Petitioners had petitioned for a licence to rob upon the Road-way their sin had not been so great But you will say this were a grosse sin the Parliament would never have granted such a wicked Petition I answer No and I hope they will not grant this except they meane to procure another curse upon the Land Malach. 3.9 But their vigilancie is better than so for they labour to bring blessings upon the Kingdome and not cursings But such as keep the maintenance of Gods worship and service to themselves do draw on a curse upon their heads as is said before And this is the beloved sin the private sin and the hypocriticall sin that Church-robbers both in themselves and in their posteritie are plagued for And thus wee may see the perverse natures of these cruell proud covetous wretches that make no care or conscience how they get the riches of this world so they have it As for to covet the Tithes is the Lords portion Levit. 27.32 It is his Ministers portion 1 Cor. 9. vers 8 9 13 14. Hebr. 7. vers 6 7 8 9 10. And therefore those private men that do retaine Tithes to their owne private use in possession and do not deliver them to their Pastour and Minister that have the charge of their souls they do procure the curse of God upon themselves Malac. 3.8.9 as is before spoken Howsoeuer the Adversaries of the maintenance of the Ministers of the Gospell will not approve of it by Tithes yet those that do receive the earnest of Gods sanctifying spirit 2 Cor. 5.5 they will with modestie read the holy Scriptures with understanding and moderately to judge the truth of it when as indeed those that are possessed with a proud scoffing and scomfull spirit they will never have done with their scoffing jeering and cavilling FINIS

work yet the Lord did in mercy and judgement send a great Plague and Pestilence and since he hath sent a greater Plague and Pestilence and yet nothing of all this would call this Land to Repentance For the people of this Land are as proud as ever they were before as hatefull to true Religion Prophaners of the Lords day full of rayling blaspheming the name of God and foulmouthed swearing swearing false whoreing murdering and blood sucking Church-robbing and irreverent behaviour in the very Publick place of Gods worship and service but I have somthing digressed The Apostle Saint Paul saith in his Epistle to the Galathians 6. Chap. 6. vers Let him that is taught in the word make him that teacheth him partaker of all his goods I marvell who shall decide this partaking of these goods which the Apostle here speaketh of shall any man do it No for then he will be a Mehuwell a Teacher of God For seeing God hath apparently set down in his Word that Tythes must belong to the Instruments of his Worship and Service as is aforesaid and our Pastors and Ministers of Gods Worship and Service are the Instruments thereof Now therefore the Tythes must of necessity belong unto them for that is a true partaking of all his goods Furthermore the Apostle to the Hebrews Chap. 7. makes it very plain that Tythes do belong unto our Pastors and Ministers of the Gospell Concerning this 7. Chap. if there were no other Scripture in all the New Testament to prove Tythes to belong to the Ministers of the Gospel but this one Chapter it were yet sufficient for touching Melchisadec it is said he was King of Salem a Priest of the most high God and in that he was a Priest of the most high God and meeting Abraham when he returned from the slaughter of the Kings he blessed him and Abraham gave him the Tenth of the spoyles From whence we may very well observe That when the Ministers of the Gospel doe performe their Pastorall Charge in setting forth Gods Ordinances to their Parishioners the Congregation is to give unto their Pastour and Minister the Tythe of all they doe get by their labour that cometh of the Fruit of the Earth Gen. 14.19 Gal. 6.6 1 Cor. 9.9 10 11. First because it is Gods part Reasons God did reserve the Tythes unto himself Levit. 27.30 to the end Secondly God hath given the Tythes to his Ministers that hath a Pastorall Charge Numb 18. as you have heard before Thirdly Gospell Doctrine was taught before the Law and the tenth part was paid before the Law Therefore the tenth part of the Fruits of the Earth is due to the Ministers of the Gospell Gen. 3.15 Chap. 17.7 and 28 12 14 22. and 49.10 Revel 10.2 Fourthly as it was lawfull for the Priests and Levites to receive Tythes for the performance of their Duties in the Worship and Service of God then being but types and shadowes much more then the Ministers of the Gospel deserve Tythes for their maintenance being they do labour in the substance of Gods Worship and Service Heb. 7.11 For the Priests and Levites were but temporall and also corporall and therefore not perfect But our Ministers of the Gospell are Spirituall Labourers and therefore the more precious as the Apostle himself sheweth in this 7. Chap. vers 7. and without all contradiction the lesser is blessed of the better giving us to understand That as the Lord hath commanded the Sonnes of Levie to receive Tythes of their Brethren after they had received the Office of Priesthood Those I say who had paid Tythes unto Melchizadec and so consequently to our Saviour Christ whilest they were yet in the loynes of Abraham and then Melchisadec blessed him and them that is to say Abraham and his Seed And further in the 8 verse and here men that dye receive Tythes but there he receiveth them of whom it is witnessed that he liveth and who is he that ever liveth was it Melchisadec or our Saviour Jesus Christ if it was Melchisadec then it cannot be denyed but he was a figure of Christ as Chap. 7. vers 1. and 3. it doth appear Then Melchizadec receiving Tythes vers 4.6 it must needs follow consequently that Jesus Christ our blessed Saviour did receive Tythes and what did he with them I answer he did leave them with Melchizadecs Successours untill he brought the Children of Israel forth of Egipt into the wildernesse and then he gave them his Law shewing them how they should carrie themselves towards God and towards themselves and their Neighbours And withall gave them Priests and Levites as Instruments of his Worship and Service and then he gave them the Tythes for their maintenance an Inheritance viz. for ever as you have heard before And these Tythes being for an Inheritance the Ceremoniall Law being but shadowes and Types of better things to come These things ended and the substance came when Jesus Christ came in the flesh the Office of the Priests and Levites being ended to whom should the Tythes belong but to the Ministers of Christ that preach the Gospel to continue for ever for their maintenance as God hath before commanded I do verily believe that if any of our Reverend Divines of the Synod should but commentary upon this seventh Chapter to the Hebrewe they could not but yeeld the tithes to the Ministers of the Gospell of Jesus Christ if there were no other proofs in the Bible to prove it but if they should one adverse party or other would be ready to raise aslander upon them and say they preached for themselves when as indeed it is as necessarie a truth as any is to be preached for take away the maintenance of preaching the truth how long can it stand You keep much adoe about payment of Tithes as if there were nothing to be done but paying of Tithes but if this paying of Tithes be a Morall Law as you say it is I marvell how it is that Offerings are not paid as well as Tithes I am sure else Lord did complaine by the Prophet Malachi in his 3. Chap. 8. Vers That they had robbed him in Tithes and Offerings And now no Offerings are paid and the refore it should seeme the Law for Tithes and Offerings to be paid is Ceremoniall and not Morall I answer you thinke you have spoken wisely and home to the purpose but alas you are quite befogged in the dark shadow of Ceremonies It should seem you never in all your life payed Offerings and therefore no marvell that you would pay no Tithes But to the matter As the Doctrine of the Gospell is spirituall so are the paying of Offerings spirituall The Prophet Dania did well prophesie of these spirituall offerings long before the coming of Christ in the flesh Psal 40.6 saying sacrifice and offerings thou didst not desire but mine ears hast thow opened as if the Prophet should have said Lord as thou hast given me the Spirit of Prophesie to
