patrick_n and_o on_o the_o east_n it_o begin_v from_o the_o monastery_n of_o aberkernick_n as_o bede_n affirm_v in_o which_o country_n about_o one_o hundred_o and_o twenty_o year_n since_o there_o be_v a_o strong_a castle_n of_o the_o douglass_n call_v abercorn_n but_o no_o sign_n of_o any_o monastery_n at_o all_o moreover_o leave_v their_o enemy_n shall_v make_v a_o descent_n by_o ship_n into_o place_n beyond_o the_o wall_n as_o in_o their_o memory_n they_o have_v former_o do_v they_o set_v up_o many_o beacon_n or_o watch_n tower_n on_o the_o high_a ground_n along_o the_o shore_n from_o whence_o there_o be_v a_o large_a prospect_n into_o the_o sea_n and_o where_o it_o be_v convenient_a they_o appoint_v garrison_n but_o consist_v of_o such_o cowardly_a and_o effeminate_a fellow_n that_o they_o can_v not_o endure_v so_o much_o as_o to_o see_v the_o face_n of_o a_o arm_a enemy_n the_o roman_a legion_n do_v this_o beneficial_a and_o oblige_a work_n for_o their_o assistance_n from_o the_o roman_n who_o affair_n be_v now_o bring_v to_o that_o exigence_n that_o they_o can_v help_v their_o ally_n especial_o so_o far_o remote_a no_o more_o when_o the_o romans_n scot_n and_o pict_n understand_v for_o certain_a by_o their_o spy_n that_o the_o roman_n be_v depart_v and_o will_v return_v no_o more_o they_o assault_v the_o wall_n with_o all_o their_o might_n and_o much_o more_o eager_o than_o before_o and_o do_v not_o only_o cast_v down_o their_o opposer_n by_o hurl_v dart_n at_o they_o but_o also_o draw_v they_o off_o the_o wall_n with_o cramp-iron_n as_o bede_n call_v they_o which_o be_v as_o i_o understand_v crooked_a iron_n instrument_n of_o hook_n fasten_v on_o the_o top_n of_o long_a pole_n so_o that_o the_o upper_a fortification_n be_v thus_o make_v destitute_a of_o its_o defender_n they_o apply_v their_o engine_n and_o overthrow_v the_o foundation_n also_o and_o thus_o a_o entrance_n and_o passage_n be_v make_v they_o enforce_v their_o affrightn_v enemy_n to_o leave_v their_o habitation_n and_o dwelling_n and_o to_o fly_v away_o for_o safety_n wherever_o they_o can_v find_v it_o for_o the_o scot_n and_o pict_n be_v so_o assailant_n rather_o weary_v than_o satisfy_v with_o the_o misery_n of_o their_o enemy_n return_v home_o and_o begin_v at_o last_o to_o bethink_v themselves_o that_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o take_v away_o the_o good_n of_o their_o enemy_n as_o withal_o they_o have_v despoil_v themselves_o of_o the_o reward_n of_o their_o victory_n and_o therefore_o convening_n a_o assembly_n of_o the_o from_o the_o enemy_n with_o new_a colony_n for_o the_o procreation_n of_o a_o new_a progeny_n this_o counsel_n seem_v the_o more_o wholesome_a and_o adviseable_a because_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o valiant_a but_o indigent_a officer_n and_o soldier_n who_o have_v not_o room_n enough_o to_o live_v in_o their_o ancient_a habitation_n this_o turn_n of_o prosperity_n be_v signify_v to_o the_o almost_o all_o of_o they_o that_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o have_v read_v they_o he_o shall_v burn_v they_o but_o bothwel_o know_v the_o queen_n inconstancy_n as_o have_v have_v many_o evident_a example_n of_o it_o in_o a_o few_o year_n have_v preserve_v the_o letter_n that_o so_o if_o any_o difference_n shall_v arise_v betwixt_o he_o &_o she_o he_o may_v use_v they_o as_o a_o testimony_n for_o himself_o and_o thereby_o declare_v that_o he_o be_v not_o the_o author_n but_o only_o a_o party_n in_o the_o king_n murder_n balfure_n deliver_v this_o cabinet_n to_o bothwel_n servant_n but_o withal_o he_o inform_v the_o chief_n of_o the_o adverse_a party_n what_o he_o have_v send_v whither_o and_o by_o who_o whereupon_o they_o take_v he_o and_o find_v in_o the_o letter_n great_a and_o mighty_a matter_n contain_v which_o though_o before_o shrewd_o suspect_v yet_o can_v never_o so_o clear_o be_v make_v forth_o but_o here_o the_o whole_a wicked_a plot_n be_v visible_o expose_v to_o view_v bothwel_o not_o speed_v in_o any_o of_o his_o affair_n and_o be_v destitute_a of_o all_o help_n or_o hope_v to_o recover_v the_o kingdom_n flee_v first_o to_o the_o orcades_n then_o to_o the_o schetland_n isle_n and_o there_o be_v drive_v to_o great_a want_n he_o exercise_v piracy_n in_o the_o interim_n many_o deal_v with_o and_o desire_v the_o queen_n to_o separate_v her_o cause_n from_o bothwel_n for_o if_o he_o be_v punish_v she_o may_v easy_o be_v restore_v with_o the_o goodwill_n of_o all_o her_o subject_n but_o the_o fierce_a woman_n bear_v as_o yet_o the_o spirit_n of_o her_o former_a fortune_n and_o incage_v with_o her_o present_a trouble_n answer_v that_o she_o will_v rather_o live_v with_o he_o in_o the_o utmost_a adversity_n than_o without_o he_o in_o the_o royal_a condition_n but_o among_o the_o noble_n there_o be_v great_a thought_n of_o heart_n the_o revenger_n of_o the_o parricide_n hope_v that_o at_o the_o noise_n of_o so_o famous_a a_o business_n the_o approbation_n of_o the_o better_a part_n if_o not_o all_o will_v have_v concur_v with_o they_o but_o it_o fall_v out_o far_o otherwise_o for_o popular_a envy_n be_v abate_v partly_o by_o space_n of_o time_n and_o partly_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o uncertainty_n of_o human_a affair_n be_v turn_v into_o commiseration_n yea_o some_o of_o the_o nobility_n do_v then_o no_o less_o bewail_v the_o queen_n calamity_n distress_n than_o heretofore_o they_o have_v execrate_v her_o cruelty_n both_o which_o they_o do_v rather_o by_o inconstancy_n of_o mind_n than_o by_o any_o propense_a affection_n to_o either_o side_n so_o that_o it_o evident_o appear_v that_o in_o such_o trouble_a water_n they_o do_v not_o seek_v the_o public_a peace_n but_o rather_o fish_n for_o their_o own_o private_a advantage_n many_o also_o desire_a quietness_n and_o they_o weigh_v within_o themselves_o
reach_v not_o beyond_o the_o middle_a rock_n of_o the_o castle_n but_o the_o upper_a part_n of_o it_o be_v so_o dark_a that_o the_o guard_n in_o the_o castle_n can_v see_v nothing_o of_o what_o be_v do_v below_o but_o as_o the_o mist_n come_v seasonable_o so_o there_o be_v another_o misfortune_n which_o fall_v out_o very_o unlucky_o and_o have_v almost_o mar_v the_o whole_a business_n for_o many_o ladder_n be_v require_v to_o get_v up_o that_o high_a rock_n and_o the_o first_o be_v unmanageable_a by_o reason_n of_o their_o length_n they_o be_v overladen_a with_o the_o weight_n of_o those_o who_o go_v hasty_o up_o and_o be_v not_o well_o fasten_v at_o foot_n in_o a_o slippery_a soil_n fall_v sudden_o down_o with_o those_o that_o be_v upon_o they_o that_o accident_n cast_v they_o into_o a_o great_a consternation_n at_o present_a but_o when_o they_o find_v that_o no_o body_n be_v hurt_v in_o the_o fall_n they_o recollect_v their_o spirit_n which_o be_v almost_o despond_v and_o as_o if_o god_n almighty_n have_v favour_v their_o design_n they_o go_v on_o upon_o that_o dangerous_a service_n with_o great_a alacrity_n so_o that_o they_o set_v the_o ladder_n up_o again_o more_o cautious_o and_o when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o rock_n there_o be_v a_o place_n reasonable_o convenient_a where_o they_o may_v stand_v and_o there_o they_o find_v a_o ash_n shrub_n casual_o grow_v among_o the_o stone_n which_o do_v they_o great_a service_n for_o they_o tie_v rope_n to_o it_o and_o let_v they_o down_o by_o which_o mean_n they_o lift_v up_o their_o fellow_n that_o be_v leave_v below_o so_o that_o at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n some_o be_v draw_v up_o by_o the_o rope_n to_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o rock_n and_o other_o by_o set_v other_o ladder_n get_v up_o to_o the_o top_n thereof_o there_o also_o they_o meet_v with_o a_o new_a and_o unexpected_a misfortune_n which_o have_v almost_o spoil_v all_o their_o measure_n for_o one_o of_o the_o soldier_n as_o he_o be_v in_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o ladder_n be_v sudden_o take_v with_o a_o kind_n of_o fit_a of_o a_o apoplexy_n so_o that_o he_o stick_v fast_o to_o the_o ladder_n and_o can_v not_o be_v pluck_v therefrom_o but_o stop_v the_o way_n to_o those_o that_o will_v ascend_v this_o danger_n be_v also_o overcome_v by_o the_o diligence_n and_o alacrity_n of_o the_o soldier_n for_o they_o bind_v he_o to_o the_o ladder_n so_o that_o when_o he_o recover_v out_o of_o his_o fit_a he_o can_v not_o fall_v and_o then_o in_o great_a silence_n turn_v the_o ladder_n the_o rest_n easy_o ascend_v when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o top_n of_o the_o rock_n there_o be_v a_o wall_n build_v by_o hand_n to_o which_o they_o be_v to_o put_v their_o three_o ladder_n to_o get_v over_o it_o alexander_n ramsy_n with_o two_o file_n of_o musqueteer_n get_v upon_o it_o the_o sentinel_n present_o spy_v he_o give_v the_o alarm_n and_o cast_v down_o stone_n upon_o he_o and_o his_o man_n alexander_n be_v assault_v with_o this_o unusual_a kind_n of_o fight_n as_o have_v neither_o stone_n to_o throw_v again_o nor_o a_o helmet_n to_o defend_v he_o yet_o leap_v down_o from_o the_o wall_n into_o the_o castle_n and_o there_o be_v set_v upon_o by_o three_o of_o the_o guard_n he_o fight_v it_o out_o valiant_o with_o they_o till_o his_o fellow-soldier_n be_v more_o solicitous_a for_o his_o danger_n than_o their_o own_o leap_v down_o after_o he_o and_o present_o dispatch_v the_o three_o sentinel_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n the_o rest_n make_v what_o haste_n they_o can_v so_o that_o the_o wall_n be_v old_a loose_a and_o overcharge_v with_o the_o weight_n of_o those_o who_o make_v haste_n to_o get_v over_o it_o fall_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n and_o by_o its_o fall_n as_o there_o be_v a_o breach_n make_v for_o the_o rest_n to_o enter_v so_o the_o ruin_v make_v the_o descent_n more_o easy_a through_o the_o rock_n that_o be_v very_o high_a and_o rugged_a within_o the_o castle_n whereupon_o they_o enter_v in_o a_o body_n cry_v out_o with_o a_o great_a noise_n for_o god_n and_o the_o king_n and_o often_o proclaim_v the_o name_n of_o the_o regent_n also_o so_o that_o the_o guard_n be_v amaze_v and_o forget_v to_o fight_v but_o flee_v every_o one_o to_o shift_v for_o himself_o as_o well_o as_o he_o can_v some_o keep_v themselves_o within_o door_n till_o the_o first_o to_o the_o wall_n of_o the_o castle_n and_o so_o flee_v into_o argyle_n the_o sentinel_n of_o the_o low_a castle_n and_o twenty_o five_o more_o of_o the_o garison-souldier_n surprise_n who_o have_v
