that_o they_o follow_v the_o outward_a revelation_n of_o the_o scripture_n many_o also_o embrace_v error_n for_o truth_n in_o natural_a thing_n profess_v to_o follow_v the_o guidance_n of_o sound_a natural_a reason_n can_v they_o not_o therefore_o be_v convince_v of_o their_o error_n and_o yet_o no_o man_n will_v confess_v that_o he_o have_v err_v in_o that_o wherein_o he_o believe_v that_o he_o have_v follow_v the_o conduct_n of_o right_a reason_n what_o the_o adversary_n write_v in_o his_o second_o and_o three_o paragraph_n concern_v the_o thing_n in_o the_o controversy_n agree_v on_o by_o both_o side_n i_o have_v little_a to_o answer_v or_o which_o seem_v to_o need_v any_o answer_n this_o only_a i_o take_v notice_n of_o that_o our_o a_o dversary_n do_v grant_v that_o that_o divine_a revelation_n whereby_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o his_o worship_n be_v sufficient_o and_o save_o know_v do_v come_v unto_o man_n not_o by_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o humane_a understanding_n but_o by_o the_o supernatural_a operation_n of_o god_n for_o so_o say_v he_o our_o man_n do_v profess_v on_o luther_n lesser_a catechism_n on_o the_o three_o article_n of_o the_o creed_n i_o believe_v say_v they_o that_o i_o can_v confide_v or_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n my_o lord_n or_o approach_v or_o come_v unto_o he_o any_o away_o by_o the_o power_n of_o my_o own_o reason_n but_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o his_o gospel_n have_v call_v i_o with_o his_o gift_n have_v enlighten_v i_o etc._n etc._n the_o which_o word_n if_o some_o socinian_o or_o pelagian_n do_v read_v it_o be_v a_o wonder_n if_o they_o shall_v not_o put_v on_o they_o the_o brand_n of_o enthusiasm_n yea_o of_o quakerism_n for_o the_o foresay_a word_n seem_v to_o differ_v little_a or_o nothing_o from_o our_o faith_n who_o in_o scorn_n be_v call_v quaker_n which_o may_v be_v more_o clear_o make_v apparent_a afterward_o chap._n ii_o in_o his_o four_o paragraph_n he_o propound_v the_o state_n of_o the_o question_n thus_o whether_o inward_a and_o immediate_a revelation_n be_v the_o common_a and_o ordinary_a way_n which_o god_n use_v not_o only_o to_o some_o man_n of_o old_a but_o which_o he_o do_v always_o use_v even_o to_o our_o very_a time_n unto_o all_o man_n manifest_v unto_o they_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v necessary_a for_o they_o to_o know_v in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n and_o a_o little_a after_o he_o mention_n a_o twofold_a divine_a revelation_n the_o one_o inward_a and_o immediate_a for_o which_o we_o contend_v the_o other_o outward_a and_o mediate_a viz._n the_o scripture_n by_o which_o he_o say_v man_n attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o thing_n necessary_a to_o salvation_n the_o holy_a spirit_n work_v in_o they_o by_o that_o very_a doctrine_n but_o yet_o he_o seem_v not_o to_o i_o to_o state_n the_o matter_n of_o the_o controversy_n clear_o enough_o for_o in_o the_o former_a paragraph_n as_o it_o seem_v he_o call_v the_o supernatural_a operation_n of_o god_n and_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o be_v necessary_a unto_o all_o believer_n and_o that_o absolute_o divine_a revelation_n the_o which_o because_o it_o be_v distinct_a from_o the_o outward_a and_o mediate_a as_o he_o call_v it_o of_o the_o scripture_n although_o not_o contrary_a unto_o it_o i_o know_v not_o how_o he_o can_v refuse_v to_o acknowledge_v that_o the_o revelation_n illumination_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v both_o inward_a and_o immediate_a for_o first_o that_o it_o be_v inward_a he_o will_v not_o deny_v second_o nor_o will_v he_o as_o i_o judge_v deny_v that_o it_o be_v immediate_a in_o that_o sense_n wherein_o both_o he_o and_o all_o sound_n and_o right_o think_a christian_n contend_v against_o the_o socinian_o and_o pelagian_n or_o any_o other_o adversary_n of_o god_n grace_n that_o the_o holy_a spirit_n do_v immediate_o most_o near_o and_o identical_o by_o a_o supernatural_a operation_n concur_v in_o every_o holy_a man_n as_o well_o to_o the_o form_n of_o every_o good_a thought_n or_o conception_n within_o man_n heart_n as_o to_o the_o bring_v forth_o every_o good_a work_n outward_o or_o without_o yea_o and_o all_o the_o most_o sound_a teacher_n in_o the_o school_n do_v affirm_v against_o durandus_fw-la that_o not_o only_o in_o supernatural_n but_o even_o in_o all_o natural_a production_n of_o effect_n god_n almighty_n do_v concur_v with_o all_o his_o creature_n immediate_o most_o near_o and_o as_o many_o say_v identical_o or_o in_o the_o sameness_n of_o operation_n nor_o do_v this_o immediate_a concourse_n of_o god_n the_o first_o cause_n hinder_v or_o stop_v the_o influence_n operation_n and_o use_v of_o second_o cause_n or_o of_o the_o mean_n but_o do_v rather_o establish_v corroborate_v and_o confirm_v they_o for_o example_n when_o a_o man_n be_v cure_v and_o restore_v to_o health_n out_o of_o a_o fever_n or_o any_o other_o sickness_n by_o the_o application_n of_o certain_a outward_a mean_n god_n have_v wrought_v immediate_o with_o those_o mean_n but_o if_o the_o immediate_a operation_n of_o god_n have_v be_v want_v the_o man_n have_v not_o be_v cure_v it_o be_v therefore_o pious_o believe_v by_o all_o pious_a man_n both_o according_a to_o scripture_n and_o right_a reason_n that_o
but_o mediate_o beside_o that_o such_o a_o distinction_n can_v be_v prove_v from_o scripture_n be_v altogether_o a_o mere_a invention_n and_o fiction_n of_o man_n brain_n they_o who_o have_v the_o spirit_n immediate_o do_v oftentimes_o obtain_v it_o by_o mean_n of_o the_o preach_n of_o other_o unto_o they_o and_o the_o gift_n of_o prophesy_v or_o speak_v immediate_o by_o the_o spirit_n be_v continue_v in_o the_o church_n in_o the_o time_n of_o justin_n martyr_n and_o tertullian_n as_o they_o themselves_o do_v testify_v the_o which_o continuation_n of_o so_o excellent_a a_o gift_n be_v by_o mean_n of_o preach_v so_o long_o as_o the_o preacher_n do_v preach_v pure_o by_o the_o spirit_n and_o also_o do_v pure_o and_o chaste_o live_v and_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n but_o when_o the_o preacher_n leave_v off_o or_o cease_v to_o preach_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o live_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o put_v their_o own_o spirit_n in_o the_o room_n and_o place_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n that_o spirit_n and_o gift_n of_o prophecy_n the_o which_o be_v great_o to_o be_v lament_v do_v cease_v in_o great_a part_n what_o the_o adversary_n dispute_v against_o r._n b._n in_o his_o follow_a paragraph_n to_o the_o end_n of_o his_o dissertation_n and_o answer_v to_o r._n b._n his_o solid_a and_o firm_a argument_n take_v from_o scripture_n do_v altogether_o lean_a upon_o that_o false_a foundation_n sufficient_o refute_v by_o i_o to_o wit_n that_o because_o the_o faithful_a both_o under_o the_o new_a and_o old_a covenant_n receive_v the_o holy_a spirit_n by_o mean_n of_o outward_a preach_v ordinary_o and_o common_o that_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o immediate_o endue_v and_o inspire_v with_o the_o same_o the_o which_o consequence_n i_o have_v already_o over_o and_o over_o again_o show_v to_o be_v most_o false_a although_o it_o be_v grant_v that_o all_o the_o faithful_a have_v always_o receive_v the_o spirit_n by_o mean_n of_o outward_a preach_v or_o use_v of_o the_o scripture_n the_o which_o i_o will_v never_o grant_v unto_o he_o and_o if_o i_o shall_v grant_v unto_o he_o that_o the_o faithful_a receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o some_o degree_n by_o mean_n of_o the_o doctrine_n outward_o preach_v while_o as_o yet_o they_o be_v as_o child_n and_o infant_n he_o can_v never_o prove_v from_o this_o that_o when_o they_o be_v more_o advance_v into_o a_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a life_n and_o come_v unto_o the_o state_n of_o man_n that_o they_o do_v always_o receive_v the_o further_a measure_n and_o degree_n of_o the_o spirit_n by_o mean_n of_o outward_a preach_a for_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o because_o at_o sometime_o they_o receive_v the_o spirit_n by_o mean_n thereof_o that_o they_o always_o do_v so_o receive_v it_o in_o the_o full_a and_o large_a measure_n and_o degree_n thereof_o even_o as_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o because_o a_o child_n or_o infant_n need_v the_o ministry_n or_o mean_n of_o a_o nurse_n or_o servant_n to_o feed_v it_o in_o that_o weak_a state_n that_o therefore_o it_o always_o need_v the_o help_n of_o that_o nurse_n or_o servant_n when_o it_o be_v come_v to_o a_o man_n age_n and_o growth_n i_o shall_v not_o therefore_o stay_v to_o answer_v to_o every_o thing_n of_o his_o dissertation_n by_o give_v still_o new_a answer_n see_v one_o communication_n do_v not_o only_o not_o hinder_v or_o make_v void_a the_o use_n of_o any_o mean_n appoint_v of_o god_n as_o of_o preach_v read_v and_o hear_v the_o scripture_n and_o meditate_v upon_o they_o that_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o do_v true_o and_o solid_o establish_v they_o sanctify_v they_o and_o make_v they_o all_o effectual_a but_o that_o the_o adversary_n do_v continual_o bind_v up_o or_o tie_v the_o operation_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o the_o outward_a letter_n of_o the_o scripture_n either_o as_o read_v or_o hear_v or_o meditate_a upon_o be_v too_o rash_o do_v in_o he_o and_o he_o have_v not_o in_o all_o his_o dissertation_n so_o much_o as_o once_o assay_v to_o prove_v it_o and_o however_o his_o common_a and_o too_o credulous_a hearer_n and_o disciple_n in_o the_o school_n may_v easy_o receive_v his_o bare_a affirmation_n without_o proof_n yet_o they_o can_v find_v place_n with_o we_o nor_o with_o other_o we_o know_v better_a thing_n and_o who_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a eye_n god_n out_o of_o his_o abundant_a grace_n have_v open_v to_o discern_v the_o truth_n but_o suppose_v which_o yet_o be_v not_o at_o all_o to_o be_v grant_v that_o the_o illumination_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v continual_o bind_v up_o or_o tie_v to_o the_o outward_a sign_n or_o letter_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o thence_o follow_v even_o upon_o that_o absurd_a principle_n that_o the_o illumination_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v not_o immediate_a or_o be_v not_o immediate_o perceive_v by_o we_o even_o as_o if_o it_o be_v grant_v that_o the_o outward_a illumination_n and_o light_n of_o the_o outward_a and_o visible_a sun_n be_v never_o see_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o man_n separate_v from_o all_o other_o visible_a object_n but_o always_o join_v and_o unite_v with_o they_o and_o always_o shine_v upon_o some_o one_o or_o other_o of_o the_o visible_a object_n and_o reflect_v its_o beam_n upon_o they_o though_o such_o who_o have_v eagle_n eye_n can_v look_v straight_o upon_o the_o sun_n himself_o yet_o it_o will_v not_o from_o thence_o follow_v that_o the_o outward_a illumination_n or_o light_n of_o the_o outward_a sun_n be_v not_o immediate_o receive_v and_o see_v or_o perceive_v by_o we_o chap._n viii_o and_o here_o i_o may_v well_o enough_o by_o right_a make_v a_o end_n of_o my_o answer_v but_o because_o he_o do_v affirm_v divers_a thing_n in_o his_o other_o paragraph_n follow_v which_o partly_o need_v correction_n and_o partly_o conduce_v to_o manifest_v the_o truth_n therefore_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v unwilling_a to_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o in_o a_o few_o particular_n in_o his_o twenty_o second_o paragraph_n he_o err_v in_o say_v universal_o and_o without_o make_v any_o distinction_n that_o there_o be_v no_o substantial_a difference_n but_o only_o accidental_a and_o circumstantial_a betwixt_o mediate_a and_o immediate_a outward_a and_o inward_a revelation_n according_a to_o the_o different_a kind_n of_o the_o sign_n under_o which_o god_n do_v manifest_v himself_o for_o although_o this_o may_v be_v grant_v in_o those_o inward_a revelation_n make_v in_o the_o imagination_n yet_o not_o in_o these_o which_o have_v place_n in_o the_o high_a faculty_n or_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o intuitive_a aforemention_v for_o the_o revelation_n which_o be_v give_v to_o this_o supreme_a or_o high_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v intuitive_a and_o which_o be_v open_v and_o awaken_v only_o in_o those_o who_o be_v sanctify_v and_o spiritual_o renew_v do_v not_o consist_v of_o sign_n but_o god_n himself_o and_o the_o divine_a thing_n of_o his_o kingdom_n in_o their_o own_o proper_a light_n and_o evidence_n discover_v themselves_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a without_o all_o sign_n and_o therefore_o however_o the_o outward_a revelation_n may_v be_v call_v accidental_a because_o it_o do_v but_o contain_v the_o sign_n which_o be_v accident_n yet_o the_o inward_a revelation_n which_o have_v place_n in_o the_o soul_n intuitive_a power_n and_o respect_v the_o divine_a thing_n themselves_o without_o sign_n be_v to_o be_v call_v substantial_a in_o in-dwelling_n of_o the_o spirit_n how_o like_a be_v his_o discourse_n in_o this_o particular_a to_o the_o socinian_o and_o pelagian_n who_o deny_v the_o necessity_n of_o any_o supernatural_a and_o divine_a aid_n or_o assistance_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o perform_v our_o acceptable_a service_n and_o obedience_n unto_o god_n he_o say_v further_a that_o the_o spirit_n of_o preach_v or_o pray_v aught_o to_o signify_v no_o more_o than_o the_o skill_n or_o habit_n of_o preach_v or_o pray_v but_o if_o he_o mean_v only_o a_o natural_a and_o acquire_v habit_n he_o join_v with_o the_o socinian_o and_o contradict_v his_o own_o former_a concession_n wherein_o he_o do_v acknowledge_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o save_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o these_o be_v supernatural_a such_o as_o faith_n love_n humility_n now_o every_o one_o that_o preach_v and_o pray_v either_o acceptable_o unto_o god_n or_o profitable_o for_o himself_o or_o his_o neighbour_n he_o must_v preach_v and_o pray_v with_o faith_n and_o love_n and_o humility_n so_o that_o these_o and_o other_o divine_a grace_n must_v be_v exercise_v in_o his_o preach_a and_o pray_v which_o require_v more_o than_o even_o a_o spiritual_a habit_n to_o wit_n a_o present_a actual_a assistance_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n otherwise_o a_o man_n who_o have_v the_o habit_n of_o preach_v and_o pray_v according_a to_o this_o author_n need_v not_o any_o dependence_n upon_o any_o new_a assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o he_o to_o pray_v for_o the_o same_o which_o yet_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o common_a practice_n of_o most_o preacher_n but_o whereas_o the_o author_n tax_v some_o for_o pretend_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o preach_v and_o pray_v and_o make_v as_o if_o their_o extemporary_a prayer_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o ispiration_n i_o acknowledge_v they_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v blame_v when_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n these_o very_a person_n deny_v all_o as_o well_o as_o preach_v when_o the_o spirit_n use_v to_o seize_v upon_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n in_o public_a and_o affect_v they_o in_o such_o a_o extraordinary_a way_n as_o to_o make_v they_o pray_v for_o such_o thing_n and_o in_o such_o a_o due_a manner_n as_o in_o those_o time_n when_o as_o yet_o the_o church_n have_v compose_v no_o liturgy_n person_n not_o inspire_v can_v not_o do_v all_o prophet_n or_o apostle_n for_o although_o the_o communication_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v immediate_a unto_o all_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o produce_v in_o all_o the_o same_o gift_n and_o function_n though_o the_o church_n of_o england_n according_a to_o the_o common_a prayer_n ow_v the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n as_o necessary_a to_o save_a faith_n and_o to_o the_o beget_n a_o save_n and_o spiritual_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o the_o scripture_n yet_o
the_o author_n say_v it_o be_v the_o preach_a simple_o consider_v that_o have_v the_o save_a efficacy_n in_o it_o without_o the_o spirit_n so_o that_o the_o spirit_n operation_n add_v nothing_o thereunto_o i_o suppose_v few_o will_v believe_v so_o gross_a a_o assertion_n for_o if_o so_o than_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o letter_n be_v as_o good_a as_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o he_o who_o have_v only_o the_o word_n be_v as_o good_a a_o preacher_n as_o he_o who_o have_v the_o spirit_n and_o word_n both_o but_o how_o contrary_a be_v this_o to_o the_o mind_n of_o paul_n who_o say_v i_o will_v know_v not_o the_o word_n of_o they_o who_o be_v puff_v up_o but_o the_o power_n and_o our_o gospel_n come_v not_o in_o word_n only_o but_o in_o power_n and_o in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o he_o have_v make_v we_o able_a minister_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n not_o of_o the_o letter_n but_o of_o the_o spirit_n for_o the_o letter_n kill_v by_o the_o letter_n he_o do_v understand_v the_o word_n which_o any_o preach_v without_o the_o spirit_n but_o the_o spirit_n give_v life_n and_o sure_o that_o which_o give_v life_n have_v a_o sanctify_a virtue_n in_o it_o and_o be_v of_o a_o moral_a and_o holy_a nature_n and_o do_v not_o sad_a experience_n prove_v it_o sufficient_o that_o man_n who_o preach_v bare_o from_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o scripture_n have_v not_o success_n in_o their_o ministry_n to_o the_o conversion_n of_o soul_n else_o why_o be_v it_o that_o so_o many_o have_v the_o name_n of_o christian_n yet_o want_v the_o true_a nature_n of_o christianity_n and_o come_v short_a of_o many_o heathen_n and_o when_o god_n shall_v be_v please_v to_o pour_v out_o his_o spirit_n more_o abundant_o and_o to_o inspire_v man_n to_o be_v preacher_n of_o his_o holy_a mind_n and_o will_n shall_v not_o christianity_n more_o prevail_v in_o the_o world_n than_o now_o it_o do_v be_v not_o the_o great_a want_n the_o want_n of_o the_o spirit_n among_o the_o great_a part_n of_o those_o call_a christian_n or_o rather_o indeed_o a_o want_n of_o a_o right_a belief_n concern_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o spirit_n help_v and_o of_o the_o great_a bounty_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n how_o willing_a he_o be_v to_o bestow_v plentiful_o of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o man_n if_o they_o will_v not_o reject_v and_o resist_v it_o and_o with_o their_o prejudice_n against_o so_o excellent_a a_o gift_n exclude_v themselves_o from_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o it_o and_o whereas_o the_o author_n say_v but_o thou_o can_v cry_v abba_n father_n without_o inspiration_n and_o thou_o may_v make_v prayer_n &_o supplication_n and_o intercession_n and_o give_v of_o thanks_o for_o all_o man_n without_o inspiration_n which_o if_o thou_o have_v it_o will_v not_o make_v thy_o prayer_n more_o excellent_a in_o themselves_o or_o more_o acceptable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n these_o be_v such_o gross_a assertion_n that_o as_o seem_v to_o i_o to_o have_v repeat_v they_o be_v refutation_n enough_o to_o any_o spiritual_o mind_a man_n be_v not_o david_n prayer_n the_o more_o excellent_a that_o they_o be_v inspire_v do_v not_o all_o christian_n value_n and_o esteem_v of_o david_n prayer_n and_o psalm_n and_o the_o prayer_n and_o psalm_n of_o other_o saint_n record_v in_o scripture_n as_o be_v divine_o inspire_v do_v they_o not_o favour_n of_o that_o sweet_a and_o precious_a life_n and_o spirit_n which_o inspire_v they_o or_o have_v the_o make_v and_o conceive_v prayer_n of_o other_o without_o all_o divine_a inspiration_n the_o same_o excellency_n and_o worth_n with_o david_n inspire_a prayer_n and_o psalm_n this_o be_v to_o equal_v the_o word_n and_o write_n of_o man_n no_o wise_a inspire_v with_o the_o scripture_n a_o crime_n which_o our_o adversary_n but_o unjust_o seek_v by_o consequence_n to_o fix_v upon_o we_o but_o the_o author_n still_o suppose_v that_o man_n may_v preach_v and_o pray_v by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o save_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n without_o inspiration_n which_o make_v he_o conclude_v from_o all_o which_o say_v he_o it_o appear_v how_o much_o more_o excellent_a and_o desirable_a be_v the_o save_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n than_o all_o these_o pompous_a miraculous_a gift_n in_o which_o there_o be_v no_o intrinsical_a excellency_n but_o i_o say_v the_o author_n still_o beg_v the_o great_a thing_n in_o controversy_n viz._n that_o there_o be_v any_o save_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n without_o inspiration_n which_o we_o altogether_o deny_v for_o we_o affirm_v that_o save_a faith_n hope_n and_o love_n and_o all_o other_o evangelical_n virtue_n be_v wrought_v in_o believer_n by_o the_o spirit_n inspiration_n nor_o can_v we_o reach_v the_o author_n subtlety_n to_o distinguish_v the_o inward_a save_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o inspiration_n as_o if_o they_o be_v distinct_a thing_n for_o suppose_v all_o sort_n of_o inspiration_n be_v not_o save_v or_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o none_o be_v necessary_a in_o that_o respect_n and_o although_o all_o inspiration_n be_v not_o save_v grace_n yet_o all_o save_a grace_n be_v inspiration_n even_o as_o though_o all_o animal_n be_v not_o man_n yet_o all_o man_n be_v animal_n or_o let_v the_o author_n if_o he_o can_v clear_o distinguish_v betwixt_o these_o two_o and_o prove_v they_o to_o be_v so_o distinct_a from_o some_o better_a authority_n than_o his_o bare_a affirmation_n viz._n that_o no_o save_a grace_n be_v any_o divine_a inspiration_n but_o of_o a_o differ_a nature_n therefrom_o the_o which_o if_o it_o be_v true_a than_o none_o of_o all_o the_o saint_n have_v any_o save_a grace_n inspire_v into_o they_o in_o any_o age_n of_o the_o world_n which_o i_o judge_v be_v contrary_a to_o the_o belief_n of_o most_o christian_n who_o general_o believe_v that_o the_o prophet_n at_o least_o have_v the_o save_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n inspire_v into_o they_o to_o conclude_v this_o author_n whole_a discourse_n tend_v only_o at_o most_o to_o prove_v if_o all_o his_o premise_n be_v grant_v that_o the_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n and_o consequent_o be_v not_o of_o a_o necessary_a continuance_n in_o the_o church_n which_o we_o do_v not_o affirm_v and_o i_o know_v not_o any_o who_o do_v so_o affirm_v so_o that_o the_o author_n have_v better_a save_v his_o labour_n than_o spend_v his_o breath_n and_o his_o time_n to_o prove_v a_o assertion_n which_o i_o know_v not_o any_o that_o do_v call_v it_o in_o question_n for_o who_o be_v it_o that_o say_v he_o have_v the_o gift_n of_o tongue_n or_o other_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o that_o sort_n i_o know_v not_o any_o or_o who_o plead_v for_o the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o they_o but_o as_o we_o do_v not_o plead_v for_o such_o gift_n so_o we_o can_v be_v so_o peremptory_a to_o conclude_v that_o all_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n have_v universal_o cease_v or_o expire_v since_o the_o primitive_a time_n or_o that_o none_o of_o they_o at_o any_o time_n hereafter_o shall_v again_o appear_v and_o i_o judge_v divers_a of_o his_o premise_n on_o which_o he_o build_v his_o conclusion_n of_o the_o universal_a expiration_n of_o those_o miraculous_a gift_n be_v defective_a and_o none_o of_o they_o sufficient_a to_o demonstrate_v his_o assertion_n it_o will_v require_v too_o much_o time_n and_o paper_n to_o examine_v every_o thing_n he_o say_v but_o something_o i_o can_v well_o let_v pass_v his_o first_o and_o main_a reason_n he_o take_v from_o the_o infancy_n of_o the_o church_n which_o require_v these_o miraculous_a gift_n during_o her_o infant-state_n and_o to_o this_o he_o apply_v these_o two_o follow_a scripture_n eph._n 4._o from_o v_o 8._o to_o v_o 14._o and_o 1_o cor._n 13._o from_o v_o 8._o to_o the_o end_n but_o sure_o these_o two_o scripture_n seem_v to_o i_o to_o be_v very_o impertinent_o bring_v to_o confirm_v his_o assertion_n and_o his_o application_n of_o they_o i_o believe_v be_v contrary_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o most_o teacher_n and_o first_o that_o he_o suppose_v all_o these_o gift_n which_o god_n give_v to_o the_o church_n at_o christ_n ascension_n to_o have_v be_v the_o miraculous_a and_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o not_o one_o of_o they_o the_o ordinary_a and_o save_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o why_o be_v not_o the_o save_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n common_a to_o all_o true_a christian_n as_o real_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o christ_n death_n resurrection_n and_o ascension_n as_o those_o miraculous_a and_o extraordinary_a sure_o this_o be_v a_o very_a unnatural_a separation_n and_o seem_v very_o injurious_a unto_o the_o purchase_n of_o christ_n as_o if_o all_o the_o save_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v exclude_v from_o be_v any_o of_o these_o gift_n which_o christ_n have_v purchase_v to_o
his_o church_n and_o the_o contrary_n do_v plain_o appear_v from_o the_o word_n themselves_o for_o they_o be_v such_o gift_n as_o be_v give_v to_o the_o rebellious_a that_o god_n may_v duel_n among_o they_o as_o signify_v the_o sanctify_a and_o renew_v gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n most_o especial_o again_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v give_v for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n the_o perfect_a of_o the_o saint_n the_o edify_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n till_o we_o all_o come_v in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o faith_n and_o of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n unto_o a_o perfect_a man_n unto_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o stature_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o christ._n and_o whereas_o this_o author_n will_v have_v that_o the_o church_n be_v come_v to_o her_o full_a stature_n in_o the_o primitive_a time_n and_o that_o consequent_o there_o be_v no_o more_o need_n of_o any_o of_o those_o gift_n mention_v in_o that_o aforecited_a place_n be_v all_o miraculous_a it_o seem_v to_o i_o wonderful_o strain_v this_o his_o assertion_n and_o to_o be_v sure_o be_v far_o from_o the_o mind_n of_o many_o of_o his_o brethren_n who_o from_o this_o very_a place_n of_o scripture_n use_v to_o argue_v that_o there_o will_v be_v a_o ministry_n and_o office_n of_o teacher_n in_o the_o church_n till_o the_o world_n end_n because_o however_o so_o perfect_a the_o church_n be_v in_o those_o day_n by_o reason_n of_o new_a convert_v and_o other_o in_o the_o present_a &_o succeed_a age_n who_o be_v to_o be_v convert_v minister_n and_o teacher_n be_v still_o necessary_a for_o grant_v that_o some_o be_v come_v to_o the_o full_a stature_n yet_o many_o more_o be_v not_o so_o far_o advance_v and_o so_o long_o as_o the_o world_n stand_v there_o will_v be_v child_n as_o well_o as_o young_a man_n and_o father_n in_o the_o church_n but_o it_o be_v strange_a that_o he_o think_v not_o only_o the_o apostle_n prophet_n and_o evangelist_n but_o also_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n or_o doctor_n to_o have_v cease_v or_o expire_v with_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n whence_o then_o have_v these_o who_o be_v now_o call_v pastor_n and_o doctor_n their_o gift_n and_o authority_n it_o seem_v very_o unto_o i_o that_o the_o author_n have_v here_o far_o out-reached_n and_o do_v a_o great_a disservice_n to_o his_o brethren_n instead_o of_o think_v to_o do_v they_o a_o great_a service_n and_o how_o the_o university_n of_o oxford_n can_v let_v this_o pass_n without_o a_o censure_n i_o do_v not_o well_o understand_v and_o whereas_o he_o say_v from_o whence_o it_o be_v evident_a viz._n from_o the_o aforecited_a place_n eph._n 4.8_o 9_o 10_o etc._n etc._n that_o as_o the_o gospel_n increase_v and_o the_o church_n grow_v up_o god_n like_o a_o wise_a nurse_n wean_v she_o by_o degree_n from_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n till_o at_o last_o have_v arrive_v at_o her_o full_a stature_n in_o christ_n he_o leave_v she_o as_o parent_n leave_v their_o child_n when_o they_o be_v grow_v to_o be_v man_n to_o subsist_v without_o extraordinary_a help_n and_o supply_n but_o have_v god_n leave_v she_o without_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n and_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o christ_n purchase_n when_o he_o ascend_v or_o be_v pastor_n and_o teacher_n these_o extraordinary_a help_n how_o much_o better_o be_v it_o to_o say_v that_o the_o gift_n here_o mention_v be_v some_o extraordinary_a and_o miraculous_a and_o some_o ordinary_a and_o however_o that_o the_o person_n of_o the_o apostle_n or_o their_o bodily_a presence_n be_v remove_v from_o the_o church_n of_o god_n on_o earth_n yet_o their_o testimony_n word_n and_o write_n remain_v together_o with_o a_o measure_n of_o the_o same_o life_n and_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o they_o for_o the_o spirit_n be_v one_o in_o all_o and_o therefore_o that_o very_a gift_n of_o god_n his_o give_v the_o apostle_n to_o the_o church_n and_o evangelist_n and_o prophet_n have_v still_o its_o service_n in_o the_o church_n and_o will_v to_o the_o world_n end_n and_o so_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o service_n do_v still_o remain_v and_o the_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n with_o all_o the_o common_a and_o ordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n necessary_a to_o salvation_n do_v actual_o remain_v again_o whereas_o the_o author_n will_v have_v it_o that_o when_o the_o church_n be_v in_o she_o more_o infant-state_n the_o miraculous_a and_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v most_o abound_v and_o when_o she_o be_v come_v to_o her_o most_o adult_a and_o perfect_a state_n they_o do_v whole_o cease_v this_o also_o may_v be_v call_v in_o question_n viz._n whether_o the_o church_n in_o the_o apostle_n day_n when_o those_o miraculous_a gift_n do_v most_o abound_v be_v not_o in_o a_o more_o perfect_a state_n than_o in_o the_o succeed_a age_n and_o whether_o the_o author_n think_v in_o his_o conscience_n that_o the_o church_n in_o these_o latter_a age_n since_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n have_v general_o cease_v viz._n from_o about_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o five_o century_n till_o this_o time_n have_v be_v in_o the_o most_o perfect_a state_n or_o rather_o have_v we_o not_o good_a ground_n to_o believe_v that_o the_o church_n that_o be_v in_o the_o apostle_n day_n and_o the_o age_n immediate_o succeed_v for_o the_o first_o three_o hundred_o year_n be_v in_o the_o pure_a and_o most_o perfect_a state_n of_o all_o and_o that_o the_o church_n of_o the_o succeed_a age_n have_v not_o arrive_v at_o her_o perfection_n be_v not_o the_o apostolical_a church_n worthy_o reckon_v the_o patron_n of_o all_o other_o church_n have_v not_o a_o great_a apostasy_n come_v upon_o the_o far_o great_a part_n of_o that_o call_v the_o church_n which_o begin_v about_o that_o very_a time_n when_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n do_v cease_v in_o great_a part_n and_o though_o the_o lord_n know_v best_a why_o these_o miraculous_a and_o extraordinary_a gift_n do_v cease_v yet_o may_v it_o not_o be_v judge_v a_o better_a reason_n than_o any_o give_v here_o by_o the_o author_n that_o these_o so_o excellent_a gift_n be_v take_v away_o because_o of_o the_o apostasy_n that_o be_v come_v on_o apace_o upon_o the_o visible_a face_n of_o the_o church_n and_o that_o the_o unfaithfulness_n of_o professor_n who_o do_v abuse_v both_o the_o ordinary_a and_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o god_n provoke_v the_o lord_n to_o take_v both_o sort_n away_o from_o the_o great_a number_n in_o a_o great_a part_n if_o not_o altogether_o but_o whether_o when_o the_o church_n shall_v universal_o recover_v her_o former_a purity_n and_o sincerity_n it_o may_v please_v god_n to_o restore_v unto_o she_o those_o very_a extraordinary_a gift_n i_o leave_v to_o his_o infinite_a counsel_n and_o good_a pleasure_n to_o determine_v again_o as_o to_o the_o other_o scripture_n allege_v and_o apply_v by_o he_o for_o the_o cease_n of_o these_o extraordinary_a gift_n he_o seem_v to_o have_v as_o far_o miss_v the_o mark_n as_o in_o the_o former_a as_o if_o forsooth_o paul_n do_v reckon_v not_o only_o all_o those_o miraculous_a and_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n wherewith_o he_o be_v so_o rich_o endue_v but_o also_o all_o his_o vision_n and_o enjoyment_n he_o have_v of_o god_n by_o inspiration_n and_o immediate_a revelation_n but_o as_o childish_a thing_n and_o as_o belong_v to_o a_o child_n state_n in_o comparison_n of_o more_o perfect_a attainment_n of_o believer_n in_o the_o succeed_a age_n when_o all_o divine_a inspiration_n and_o immediate_a revelation_n shall_v cease_v as_o this_o author_n suppose_v and_o if_o so_o than_o the_o author_n may_v think_v himself_o and_o such_o as_o he_o as_o man_n in_o respect_n of_o paul_n and_o the_o other_o apostle_n who_o be_v but_o as_o child_n to_o he_o and_o his_o brethren_n for_o thus_o he_o expound_v paul_n word_n 1_o cor._n 13.9_o 10_o 11_o 12._o even_o as_o when_o i_o be_v a_o child_n i_o speak_v as_o child_n i_o understand_v as_o a_o child_n i_o think_v and_o conceive_v thing_n as_o a_o child_n but_o when_o i_o become_v a_o man_n and_o to_o the_o full_a use_n of_o my_o reason_n i_o put_v away_o childish_a conception_n and_o thing_n for_o now_o we_o see_v divine_a revelation_n thus_o he_o gloss_v upon_o paul_n word_n as_o the_o prophet_n do_v of_o old_a in_o a_o dark_a enigmetical_a manner_n and_o by_o symbolical_a representation_n of_o thing_n upon_o the_o fancy_n as_o in_o a_o glass_n but_o in_o the_o adult_n state_n of_o the_o church_n we_o shall_v see_v they_o after_o the_o moysaicall_a manner_n in_o a_o more_o rational_a way_n and_o more_o accommodate_v to_o human_a nature_n as_o it_o be_v face_n to_o face_n now_o i_o know_v they_o imperfect_o but_o then_o i_o shall_v know_v they_o clear_o even_o as_o i_o be_o know_v now_o i_o appeal_v to_o the_o impartial_a reader_n if_o he_o do_v not_o prefer_v himself_o and_o
