note_n we_o be_v unto_o god_n by_o so_o much_o the_o near_o we_o come_v up_o to_o perfection_n knowledge_n be_v exceed_o precious_a it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o since_o it_o tend_v to_o perfection_n indeed_o as_o aquinas_n say_v of_o see_v though_o the_o object_n of_o sight_n be_v mean_a in_o itself_o yet_o the_o very_a act_n of_o see_v be_v sweet_a so_o also_o he_o determine_v of_o know_v that_o however_o the_o object_n be_v low_a and_o poor_a yet_o the_o very_a act_n itself_o of_o knowledge_n be_v high_a and_o precious_a now_o of_o all_o knowledge_n there_o be_v none_o so_o precious_a nor_o so_o perfect_v as_o that_o which_o be_v divine_a other_o knowledge_n viz._n human_a can_v make_v we_o perfect_v only_o as_o man_n this_o knowledge_n viz._n divine_a give_v we_o a_o perfection_n as_o saint_n but_o of_o all_o divine_a knowledge_n the_o knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o light_n of_o love_n as_o most_o precious_a as_o tend_v most_o to_o the_o perfection_n of_o our_o soul_n as_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o lustre_n in_o the_o heavenly_a light_n so_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o glory_n in_o divine_a truth_n every_o star_n in_o the_o firmament_n have_v a_o glorious_a light_n but_o yet_o the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n exceed_v they_o all_o in_o glory_n and_o every_o truth_n which_o be_v as_o a_o star_n in_o the_o heaven_n of_o divinity_n have_v a_o peculiar_a excellency_n in_o it_o and_o the_o knowledge_n thereof_o be_v precious_a but_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v as_o the_o sun_n in_o divinity_n be_v heaven_n have_v a_o transcendent_a excellency_n in_o he_o and_o to_o know_v he_o do_v sarre_o more_o tend_v to_o the_o perfect_a of_o our_o soul_n than_o the_o knowledge_n of_o any_o or_o all_o divine_a truth_n else_o beside_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o paul_n accent_n this_o knowledge_n with_o a_o excellency_n phil._n 3.8_o yea_o doubtless_o say_v he_o i_o count_v all_o thing_n but_o loss_n for_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n yet_o mortal_n receive_v more_o comfort_n by_o its_o heat_n than_o by_o its_o light_n in_o like_a manner_n though_o the_o knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o most_o transcendent_a of_o divine_a truth_n yet_o our_o soul_n receive_v more_o sweetness_n by_o the_o warmth_n of_o his_o love_n than_o by_o the_o lustre_n of_o his_o light_n look_v as_o moses_n can_v not_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o live_v and_o yet_o must_v die_v except_o he_o see_v his_o grace_n even_o so_o our_o soul_n can_v see_v the_o lustre_n of_o the_o bright_a beam_n of_o christ_n glory_n and_o live_v we_o must_v die_v ere_o we_o can_v behold_v that_o yet_o notwithstanding_o we_o must_v see_v the_o light_n of_o the_o bosome-love_n of_o jesus_n or_o else_o we_o die_v if_o this_o light_a dawn_n not_o the_o context_n that_o it_o may_v give_v some_o light_n to_o the_o text_n the_o apostle_n have_v hint_v in_o the_o first_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n context_n context_n that_o he_o be_v a_o prisoner_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o the_o ephesian_n who_o be_v gentile_n and_o have_v also_o upon_o that_o speak_v something_o of_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o warrant_n which_o he_o have_v to_o preach_v the_o same_o unto_o they_o which_o two_o thing_n be_v as_o two_o great_a supporter_n of_o he_o in_o his_o suffering_n he_o come_v in_o the_o fourteen_o verse_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o ephesian_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v at_o his_o tribulation_n now_o there_o may_v be_v a_o double_a ground_n of_o the_o apostle_n fear_v why_o the_o ephesian_n may_v faint_v at_o news_n of_o his_o tribulation_n 1_o sympathy_n it_o be_v usual_a with_o saint_n to_o sympathize_v each_o with_o other_o in_o their_o tribulation_n and_o paul_n upon_o this_o ground_n may_v right_o think_v that_o the_o tiding_n of_o his_o imprisonment_n will_v be_v sad_a to_o these_o ephesian_n and_o happy_o he_o may_v fear_v that_o out_o of_o their_o tender_a love_n both_o to_o his_o person_n and_o preach_v they_o will_v be_v over-sad_a by_o sympathy_n to_o understand_v that_o now_o their_o preacher_n be_v in_o prison_n 2_o fear_v lest_o themselves_o may_v meet_v with_o the_o like_a suffering_n for_o what_o may_v they_o think_v be_v paul_n in_o prison_n for_o preach_v the_o gospel_n then_o sure_o may_v we_o fear_v the_o like_a for_o receive_v the_o gospel_n it_o be_v common_o see_v that_o the_o receiver_n of_o gospel-truth_n suffer_v as_o well_o as_o the_o revealer_n note_n note_n and_o certain_o the_o ephesian_n may_v say_v we_o shall_v be_v account_v as_o faulty_a for_o our_o faith_n in_o as_o paul_n be_v for_o his_o preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n this_o peradventure_o they_o may_v argue_v and_o fear_v and_o faint_a therefore_o the_o apostle_n bend_v his_o knee_n to_o he_o who_o alone_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v from_o and_o support_v in_o faint_n i._n e._n to_o the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o three_o thing_n he_o beg_v in_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o ephesian_n that_o they_o may_v not_o upon_o any_o ground_n faint_v at_o his_o tribulation_n 1_o divine_a strength_n that_o he_o will_v grant_v according_a to_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o glory_n that_o they_o may_v be_v strengthen_v with_o might_n by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o inner_a man_n ver_fw-la 16._o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n the_o apostle_n know_v be_v weak_a and_o so_o will_v faint_v unless_o god_n do_v strengthen_v it_o therefore_o he_o beg_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o power_n from_o on_o high_a for_o their_o strengthen_n in_o the_o inner_a man_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v in_o their_o outward_a man_n 2_o christ_n inhabitation_n that_o christ_n may_v dwell_v in_o your_o heart_n by_o faith_n say_v he_o v._o 17._o if_o any_o thing_n will_v keep_v up_o the_o heart_n from_o faint_a note_n note_n it_o be_v the_o indwel_n of_o christ_n with_o the_o soul_n christ_n presence_n create_v comfort_n and_o there_o be_v no_o such_o fence_n against_o faint_v under_o any_o fear_n as_o christ_n in_o the_o soul_n the_o inhabitation_n of_o christ_n within_o will_v support_v the_o soul_n from_o its_o faint_n at_o tribulation_n for_o christ_n without_o 3_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n that_o they_o may_v know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o text_n paul_n well_o know_v the_o power_n of_o christ_n love_n and_o the_o efficacy_n thereof_o this_o way_n so_o that_o now_o you_o may_v gather_v up_o the_o apostle_n petition_n into_o one_o prayer_n and_o you_o may_v conceive_v he_o pour_v out_o his_o heart_n after_o this_o manner_n thou_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n since_o thou_o be_v the_o god_n of_o all_o comfort_n and_o comforte_v thou_o in_o all_o their_o tribulation_n so_o that_o they_o faint_v not_o vouchsafe_v to_o grant_v according_a to_o the_o riches_n of_o thy_o grace_n that_o the_o ephesian_n may_v not_o faint_v at_o my_o tribulation_n and_o consideration_n of_o christ_n love_n have_v a_o constrain_a power_n upon_o paul_n spirit_n &_o he_o can_v not_o choose_v but_o judge_v this_o that_o if_o jesus_n christâ—_n die_v for_o he_o he_o shall_v be_v willing_a to_o die_v for_o christ_n then_o be_v a_o christian_n sweet_o exercise_v when_o as_o the_o golden_a ball_n of_o divine_a love_n be_v toss_v too_o and_o again_o between_o see_v that_o which_o i_o be_o sure_a to_o thou_o be_v better_a than_o gold_n id_fw-la est_fw-la his_o grace_n weak_a people_n be_v thus_o far_o wise_a as_o they_o have_v their_o little_a bottle_n of_o spirit_n and_o cordial_n to_o carry_v about_o with_o they_o to_o refresh_v they_o when_o they_o be_v faint_a believer_n you_o especial_o you_o that_o be_v weak_a imitate_v their_o wisdom_n let_v this_o bottle_n of_o christ_n transcendent_a love_n always_o be_v in_o thy_o bosom_n and_o have_v recourse_n to_o this_o refresh_v thy_o spirit_n upon_o all_o occasion_n especial_o when_o thou_o begin_v to_o faint_v and_o without_o doubt_n there_o be_v a_o refresh_a power_n in_o this_o transcendent_a love_n of_o christ_n to_o keep_v up_o your_o heart_n from_o faint_v under_o trouble_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v in_o the_o next_o point_n when_o we_o come_v to_o it_o jesus_n christ_n in_o his_o trouble_n have_v recourse_n to_o his_o father_n love_n why_o then_o in_o any_o trouble_n have_v not_o you_o recourse_n to_o christ_n love_n four_o in_o as_o much_o as_o christ_n love_v all_o his_o with_o a_o transcendent_a love_n let_v it_o be_v your_o care_n o_o believer_n to_o imitate_v your_o saviour_n love_v all_o his_o as_o he_o do_v with_o such_o a_o transcendent_a love_n 4.11_o ephes_n 5.2_o 1_o joh._n 4.11_o belove_a if_o christ_n have_v love_v we_o we_o ought_v then_o to_o love_v one_o another_o at_o least_o o_o believer_n be_v persuade_v to_o have_v salt_n in_o yourselves_o and_o to_o love_v one_o another_o and_o that_o very_o dear_o since_o jesus_n christ_n do_v the_o like_a be_v you_o follower_n of_o christ_n in_o this_o as_o deaâ—_n child_n and_o be_v you_o walker_n in_o love_n one_o to_o another_o as_o christ_n have_v love_v you_o all_o who_o ever_o they_o be_v that_o be_v believer_n christ_n love_v they_o very_o dear_a because_o they_o be_v he_o he_o do_v so_o why_o shall_v not_o you_o o_o that_o where_o ever_o you_o see_v the_o light_n of_o christ_n love_n shine_v upon_o any_o bosom_n that_o there_o you_o will_v cause_v your_o love_n to_o shine_v also_o upon_o the_o same_o especial_o take_v heed_n that_o you_o do_v not_o frown_v upon_o those_o on_o who_o christ_n do_v smile_v you_o have_v hear_v and_o therefore_o mind_n it_o that_o christ_n love_v all_o his_o with_o a_o transcendent_a love_n therefore_o take_v in_o this_o exhortation_n also_o who_o ever_o they_o be_v that_o belong_v to_o jesus_n christ_n though_o in_o many_o thing_n they_o differ_v from_o thou_o yet_o let_v they_o have_v thy_o love_n for_o this_o one_o thing_n viz._n be_v all_o of_o they_o happy_a in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o truth_n that_o jesus_n christ_n love_v they_o all_o with_o a_o love_n pass_v knowledge_n sad_a it_o be_v to_o see_v those_o look_n strange_o one_o upon_o another_o who_o be_v yet_o all_o belove_v of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o sad_a it_o be_v to_o see_v any_o saint_n look_v upon_o another_o with_o a_o frown_a countenance_n when_o as_o christ_n look_v upon_o he_o as_o well_o as_o upon_o himself_o with_o a_o smile_a face_n who_o do_v not_o bleed_v to_o see_v one_o believer_n to_o write_v a_o book_n of_o revile_n against_o another_o when_o as_o you_o look_v upon_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o glorious_a book_n of_o love_n writ_v by_o christ_n to_o they_o all_o tell_v it_o not_o in_o gath_n publish_v it_o not_o in_o the_o street_n of_o askelon_n o_o let_v not_o the_o daughter_n of_o the_o unbeloved_a triumph_n to_o see_v you_o who_o be_v the_o high_o belove_v one_o of_o jesus_n christ_n traduce_v and_o revile_v one_o another_o i_o say_v no_o more_o but_o this_o since_o jesus_n christ_n do_v love_v all_o the_o saint_n and_o every_o believer_n with_o a_o transcendent_a love_n do_v you_o who_o be_v believer_n and_o comprehend_v thyself_o emerge_n and_o drown_v thyself_o in_o that_o vast_a ocean_n of_o thy_o saviour_n bosom_n and_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o able_a with_o any_o line_n of_o thou_o to_o sound_v the_o depth_n sink_v thy_o very_a soul_n that_o it_o may_v be_v able_a to_o taste_v that_o which_o thy_o study_n will_v not_o help_v thou_o so_o much_o as_o to_o see_v i_o shall_v now_o add_v but_o a_o word_n to_o stir_v you_o up_o in_o the_o use_n of_o these_o mean_n and_o in_o this_o manner_n hint_v serious_o to_o prosecute_v the_o sweet_a study_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n first_o i_o may_v tell_v you_o that_o all_o the_o time_n that_o you_o spend_v in_o this_o study_n will_v be_v very_o delightful_a and_o very_o profitable_a and_o you_o will_v have_v no_o reason_n to_o repent_v thereof_o those_o who_o have_v spend_v or_o rather_o mis-spend_v their_o time_n in_o read_v of_o the_o fine_a history_n of_o feign_a love_n have_v at_o last_o be_v force_v to_o confess_v their_o folly_n in_o so_o do_v that_o well-deserving_a person_n sir_n philip_n sidney_n be_v report_v to_o have_v lament_v upon_o his_o deathbed_n the_o misspend_v of_o those_o part_n which_o god_n have_v give_v he_o in_o the_o pen_n of_o that_o well-penned_a piece_n his_o arcadia_n but_o sure_o believer_n to_o lie_v upon_o a_o deathbed_n and_o to_o consider_v that_o although_o all_o thy_o time_n be_v every_o hour_n thereof_o spend_v in_o the_o study_n of_o christ_n love_n you_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o repent_v of_o it_o as_o that_o you_o will_v have_v just_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v in_o it_o but_o not_o to_o urge_v this_o do_v but_o second_o consider_v the_o time_n in_o which_o we_o live_v how_o little_a love_n be_v there_o in_o these_o day_n sure_o the_o love_n of_o many_o be_v waxen_a cold_a though_o it_o be_v press_v much_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o little_o practise_v though_o all_o pretend_v to_o complain_v of_o the_o want_n of_o love_n and_o seem_v to_o press_v the_o exercise_n of_o love_n yet_o where_o be_v the_o man_n that_o make_v it_o the_o sweetness_n of_o his_o life_n to_o let_v other_o taste_v the_o sweetness_n of_o his_o love_n sure_o while_o there_o be_v such_o little_a love_n among_o man_n it_o be_v but_o meet_v that_o we_o shall_v study_v the_o love_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n but_o three_o especial_o consider_v the_o sweetness_n that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n will_v bring_v to_o thy_o soul_n in_o any_o case_n little_o do_v you_o know_v what_o comfort_n be_v wrap_v up_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n how_o oft_o do_v but_o a_o thought_n of_o this_o revive_z the_o spirit_n of_o the_o faint_a saint_n with_o what_o a_o composure_n of_o spirit_n be_v a_o believe_v able_a to_o behave_v himself_o in_o any_o tribulation_n when_o he_o know_v that_o the_o love_n of_o his_o saviour_n be_v without_o knowledge_n without_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o love_n nothing_o will_v be_v sweet_a but_o with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o love_n nothing_o can_v be_v bitter_a and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o shall_v come_v unto_o
as_o the_o last_o thing_n observe_v from_o these_o word_n viz._n to_o let_v you_o see_v how_o efficacious_a the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v unto_o the_o support_a of_o believer_n in_o any_o tribulation_n sermon_n vi._n ephes._n 3_o ver._n 19_o and_o to_o know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n he_o that_o be_v but_o little_o skill_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o face_n of_o time_n may_v very_o well_o see_v that_o these_o time_n wherein_o we_o live_v be_v very_o sad_a calamity_n lie_v upon_o every_o creature_n and_o woe_n have_v as_o it_o be_v enter_v upon_o the_o stage_n of_o the_o world_n and_o act_n a_o very_a bloody_a part_n to_o the_o terror_n of_o all_o even_o believer_n themselves_o some_o put_v on_o black_a and_o walk_v disconsolate_o yea_o almost_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v clad_v in_o mourning_n as_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o misery_n under_o which_o most_o of_o the_o world_n at_o this_o day_n groan_v in_o these_o time_n therefore_o what_o can_v be_v more_o suitable_a to_o our_o thought_n than_o to_o consider_v of_o that_o which_o may_v serve_v to_o support_v our_o spirit_n it_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o such_o as_o be_v weak_a and_o liable_a to_o faint_n to_o carry_v about_o they_o some_o cordial_a or_o other_o to_o revive_v they_o and_o it_o shall_v be_v doubtless_o the_o wisdom_n of_o believer_n who_o be_v liable_a always_o to_o tribulation_n to_o lay_v in_o something_o which_o may_v keep_v they_o from_o faint_v under_o these_o tribulation_n indeed_o our_o lord_n jesus_n out_o of_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n have_v prepare_v and_o provide_v rich_a and_o glorious_a cordial_n to_o support_v the_o soul_n of_o he_o and_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n especial_o who_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n to_o help_v believer_n with_o these_o cordial_n which_o our_o lord_n and_o their_o lord_n have_v prepare_v and_o therefore_o while_o other_o forget_v not_o only_o the_o saint_n but_o themselves_o take_v leave_n to_o press_v and_o urge_v great_a thing_n as_o matter_n of_o faith_n upon_o poor_a soul_n as_o if_o they_o have_v dominion_n over_o their_o faith_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o imitate_v the_o great_a apostle_n paul_n rather_o to_o show_v my_o self_n a_o helper_n of_o your_o joy_n ult_n 2_o cor._n 1._o ult_n than_o a_o lord_n of_o your_o faith_n it_o be_v this_o indeed_o which_o paul_n be_v much_o upon_o viz._n the_o furtherance_n of_o the_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o believer_n and_o it_o be_v this_o which_o he_o drive_v at_o in_o these_o word_n in_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o ephesian_n for_o fear_v lest_o the_o news_n of_o these_o trouble_n in_o which_o he_o be_v shall_v so_o far_o trouble_v the_o ephesian_n as_o to_o make_v they_o faint_a he_o therefore_o bow_v his_o knee_n to_o the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o he_o will_v be_v please_v to_o give_v they_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n that_o so_o by_o it_o their_o spirit_n may_v be_v keep_v from_o faint_a either_o at_o the_o news_n of_o he_o or_o fear_v of_o their_o own_o tribulation_n this_o be_v therefore_o the_o end_n why_o paul_n pray_v to_o god_n in_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o ephesian_n that_o they_o may_v know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n i_o do_v observe_v this_o doctrine_n from_o it_o viz._n that_o the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n of_o the_o transcendency_n of_o christ_n love_n towards_o he_o be_v of_o special_a efficacy_n to_o keep_v our_o heart_n from_o faint_v under_o any_o trouble_n i_o suppose_v you_o easy_o see_v both_o the_o foundation_n and_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o point_n in_o this_o place_n yet_o that_o you_o may_v see_v both_o the_o clear_a let_v i_o hint_n these_o three_o thing_n first_o consider_v it_o that_o the_o apostle_n suppose_v that_o the_o ephesiant_a heart_n be_v apt_a to_o faint_v at_o their_o tribulation_n at_o the_o 13_o verse_n his_o desire_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v do_v clear_o intimate_v this_o that_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o faint_v indeed_o the_o child_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o only_o prone_a to_o fear_v but_o be_v apt_a to_o faint_v in_o those_o fear_n second_o observe_v how_o upon_o this_o fear_n of_o the_o apostle_n lest_o they_o may_v faint_v or_o if_o you_o will_v upon_o his_o desire_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v he_o fall_v to_o prayer_n and_o make_v it_o his_o request_n to_o god_n who_o alone_a royalty_n be_v to_o support_v the_o faint_a spirit_n of_o all_o the_o creature_n that_o be_v will_v be_v please_v to_o keep_v they_o from_o faint_v for_o say_v he_o for_o this_o cause_n i_o how_o my_o knee_n to_o the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n that_o be_v upon_o this_o desire_n of_o i_o that_o you_o may_v not_o faint_a i_o bow_v my_o knee_n to_o he_o who_o alone_o be_v able_a to_o support_v your_o spirit_n three_o consider_v that_o among_o the_o rest_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o in_o their_o behalf_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v he_o pray_v for_o this_o in_o the_o text_n as_o in_o the_o last_o place_n that_o they_o may_v know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n and_o indeed_o the_o very_a spirit_n and_o strength_n of_o all_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n have_v pray_v for_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n in_o their_o behalf_n lie_v in_o this_o last_o and_o happy_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o bring_v in_o this_o as_o the_o last_o particular_a be_v as_o it_o be_v that_o last_o cordial_a which_o he_o pray_v for_o in_o their_o behalf_n and_o if_o it_o have_v fail_v he_o know_v not_o as_o it_o be_v what_o to_o ask_v of_o god_n for_o they_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o last_o dosis_n of_o the_o doctor_n which_o if_o it_o help_v not_o the_o patient_a the_o doctor_n be_v at_o a_o stand_n and_o be_v puzzle_v and_o know_v not_o what_o else_o to_o give_v so_o that_o i_o suppose_v you_o may_v easy_o see_v not_o only_o the_o foot_n that_o this_o text_n afford_v for_o this_o truth_n but_o also_o a_o great_a and_o solid_a proof_n of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o in_o it_o and_o yet_o that_o you_o may_v see_v this_o truth_n more_o clear_o from_o this_o place_n i_o will_v in_o a_o word_n show_v you_o how_o that_o the_o very_a spirit_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o other_o cordial_n which_o he_o here_o pray_v for_o be_v as_o it_o be_v wrap_v up_o in_o this_o viz._n the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n for_o consider_v first_o he_o pray_v that_o they_o may_v be_v strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n by_o his_o spirit_n verse_n 16._o now_o what_o be_v that_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n by_o the_o spirit_n but_o that_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a joy_n which_o be_v through_o he_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v strength_n nehem_n 8.10_o now_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o demonstrate_v that_o the_o chief_a ground_n upon_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v build_v that_o joy_n which_o through_o he_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n be_v this_o viz._n the_o shed_v abroad_o of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o christ_n have_v promise_v to_o send_v the_o spirit_n as_o a_o comforter_n to_o believer_n he_o say_v that_o he_o i.e._n the_o spirit_n shall_v take_v of_o i_o and_o show_v unto_o you_o john_n 16._o for_o 14_o &_o 15._o now_o what_o be_v there_o in_o all_o jesus_n christ_n of_o sweet_a efficacy_n and_o power_n which_o the_o spirit_n can_v take_v and_o declare_v to_o believer_n than_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o love_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n so_o that_o if_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v that_o which_o help_v to_o support_v thy_o soul_n from_o faint_a and_o if_o that_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v by_o a_o creation_n of_o divine_a joy_n or_o bring_v of_o divine_a comfort_n and_o that_o bring_v of_o comfort_n in_o the_o spirit_n depend_v upon_o reveal_v something_o of_o the_o heart_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o soul_n than_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o this_o cordial_a lie_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o alone_o the_o spirit_n be_v able_a to_o bring_v in_o as_o it_o be_v from_o christ_n heart_n and_o shed_v it_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n second_o the_o apostle_n do_v pray_v as_o a_o mean_n to_o keep_v the_o ephesian_n from_o faint_v that_o christ_n may_v dwell_v in_o their_o heart_n by_o faith_n ver_fw-la 17._o now_o a_o very_a few_o thought_n will_v discover_v that_o the_o strength_n of_o this_o comfort_n do_v lie_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n for_o whereas_o the_o soul_n may_v
say_v ah_o but_o will_v christ_n dwell_v in_o my_o heart_n i_o will_v fain_o believe_v it_o but_o what_o ground_n have_v i_o for_o such_o a_o belief_n he_o be_v the_o high_a and_o the_o lofty_a one_o and_o i_o be_o mean_a and_o a_o poor_a creature_n he_o be_v not_o only_o the_o brightness_n of_o his_o father_n glory_n but_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o father_n holiness_n and_o will_v such_o a_o pure_a person_n as_o he_o be_v come_v and_o dwell_v in_o such_o a_o pollute_a house_n as_o i_o be_o thus_o the_o soul_n will_v or_o may_v reason_v but_o now_o all_o this_o reason_n be_v quiet_v and_o this_o doubt_v will_v be_v easy_o resolve_v by_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n for_o he_o that_o know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n know_v how_o willing_a christ_n be_v to_o come_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o poor_a believer_n and_o how_o that_o daily_a and_o hourly_o he_o do_v stand_v at_o the_o door_n knock_v for_o entrance_n so_o that_o i_o say_v the_o very_a spirit_n of_o the_o other_o cordial_n and_o as_o it_o be_v their_o quintessence_n lie_v in_o this_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v very_o plain_a that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v of_o special_a virtue_n and_o efficacy_n to_o keep_v the_o heart_n of_o believer_n from_o faint_v under_o tribulation_n but_o i_o shall_v a_o little_a more_o demonstrate_v this_o point_n first_o by_o open_v wherein_o this_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n do_v consist_v second_o by_o show_v wherein_o the_o special_a efficacy_n of_o that_o knowledge_n do_v appear_v for_o the_o support_v of_o the_o soulâ—_n from_o faint_a fit_n in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o then_o in_o the_o close_n of_o all_o i_o shall_v make_v some_o use_n and_o application_n for_o the_o first_o wherein_o do_v the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n consist_v or_o what_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v it_o which_o keep_v the_o heart_n from_o faint_v in_o the_o general_a i_o hint_v it_o in_o that_o expression_n the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v such_o a_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n as_o the_o soul_n have_v by_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o spirit_n act_v by_o the_o shed_n abroad_o of_o that_o love_n even_o upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o believer_n look_v as_o the_o carnal_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n person_n the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o after_o the_o flesh_n as_o the_o apostle_n phrase_n be_v be_v not_o save_v neither_o be_v it_o sweet_a so_o neither_o be_v the_o carnal_a knowledge_n of_o his_o love_n it_o be_v the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n of_o his_o person_n and_o the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n of_o his_o love_n which_o further_v the_o everlasting_a happiness_n of_o a_o soul_n hereafter_o and_o the_o sweetness_n and_o comfort_n of_o a_o soul_n here_o but_o more_o particular_o i_o shall_v hint_n two_o word_n for_o the_o explication_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n what_o it_o be_v first_o negative_o it_o consist_v not_o in_o the_o bare_a notion_n of_o it_o all_o divine_a knowledge_n whatsoever_o it_o be_v be_v without_o any_o efficacy_n if_o it_o be_v but_o bare_o in_o the_o notion_n look_v as_o in_o reference_n to_o duty_n knowledge_n be_v not_o effectual_o imperative_fw-it to_o put_v the_o soul_n upon_o do_v unless_o it_o sink_v deep_a into_o the_o soul_n for_o the_o word_n fall_v among_o stone_n and_o want_v root_n do_v not_o arise_v up_o in_o fruit_n in_o like_a manner_n with_o reference_n unto_o joy_n knowledge_n be_v no_o way_n efficacious_o restorative_n although_o it_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n unless_o it_o sink_v down_o from_o the_o head_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n but_o as_o the_o apostle_n put_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n the_o father_n as_o to_o salvation_n in_o this_o viz._n that_o god_n who_o command_v the_o light_n to_o shine_v out_o of_o darkness_n have_v shine_v into_o their_o heart_n 2_o cor._n 4.6_o in_o like_a manner_n he_o put_v the_o virtue_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o make_v the_o soul_n patient_a in_o its_o waiting_n and_o by_o consequence_n not_o faint_v in_o his_o trouble_n in_o this_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v direct_v the_o thessalonian_o heart_n into_o the_o love_n of_o god_n the_o lord_n say_v he_o direct_v your_o heart_n into_o the_o love_n of_o god_n 2_o thes_n 3.5_o wherefore_o then_o this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n by_o way_n of_o negation_n that_o you_o may_v know_v wherein_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o consist_v it_o be_v not_o the_o bare_a notion_n or_o apprehension_n thereof_o in_o the_o head_n second_o and_o positive_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o matter_n in_o hand_n i_o conceive_v chief_o do_v consist_v in_o two_o thing_n first_o in_o a_o particular_a application_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o soul_n by_o faith_n i.e._n that_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o lay_v home_o that_o to_o himself_o in_o particular_a which_o he_o understand_v to_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o christ_n to_o every_o believer_n in_o general_n the_o soul_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o say_v of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v i_o for_o else_o as_o he_o say_v quid_fw-la haec_fw-la mihi_fw-la nisi_fw-la mea_fw-la what_o be_v all_o this_o to_o i_o if_o it_o be_v not_o i_o in_o like_a manner_n will_v the_o soul_n say_v what_o be_v it_o to_o i_o if_o there_o be_v a_o transcendent_a love_n in_o the_o bosom_n of_o christ_n to_o believer_n if_o i_o have_v not_o a_o share_n in_o it_o look_v as_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n do_v not_o profit_v they_o in_o who_o it_o be_v not_o mix_v with_o faith_n i.e._n in_o the_o particular_a application_n thereof_o to_o themselves_o in_o like_a manner_n neither_o do_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n comfort_n any_o if_o it_o be_v not_o mix_v with_o faith_n i.e._n particular_o apply_v to_o their_o own_o soul_n this_o be_v a_o faithful_a say_n say_v paul_n that_o jesus_n christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n of_o which_o i_o be_o chief_a 1_o tim._n 1.15_o herein_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o say_n that_o christ_n come_v to_o save_v sinner_n but_o herein_o be_v the_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o paul_n that_o he_o can_v say_v i_o be_o chief_a it_o be_v most_o clear_a that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v comfort_v but_o the_o efficacy_n of_o it_o do_v lie_v in_o the_o application_n just_o as_o now_o how_o choice_n soever_o the_o cordial_a be_v that_o be_v prescribe_v by_o the_o doctor_n it_o be_v of_o no_o comfort_n to_o cure_v the_o patient_a if_o it_o be_v not_o take_v in_o like_a manner_n though_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v one_o of_o the_o choice_a cordial_n which_o be_v reveal_v yet_o it_o be_v of_o no_o virtue_n to_o the_o soul_n unless_o it_o be_v take_v i.e._n particular_o apply_v by_o faith_n this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n wherein_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v efficacious_a to_o comfort_v in_o trouble_n do_v consist_v but_o second_o it_o consist_v not_o only_o in_o the_o particular_a application_n but_o in_o a_o serious_a meditation_n thereof_o be_v apply_v application_n take_v the_o cordial_a as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o mouth_n and_o let_v it_o down_o into_o the_o stomach_n but_o meditation_n suck_v out_o the_o sweetness_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v my_o meditation_n on_o he_o shall_v be_v sweet_a psal_n 104.4_o not_o only_o the_o know_v and_o believe_v of_o it_o to_o be_v the_o soul_n but_o also_o the_o meditation_n be_v that_o which_o make_v it_o more_o sweet_a if_o the_o cordial_a which_o the_o patient_a take_v be_v never_o so_o sweet_a yet_o if_o it_o be_v spit_v out_o again_o and_o not_o chew_v as_o it_o be_v or_o swallow_v down_o it_o afford_v but_o little_a refresh_n in_o like_a manner_n though_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v surpass_v sweet_a yea_o and_o albeit_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v apply_v in_o the_o general_a if_o it_o be_v not_o meditate_a upon_o it_o will_v be_v but_o of_o little_a efficacy_n to_o keep_v the_o heart_n from_o faint_v we_o will_v be_v glad_a and_o rejoice_v in_o thou_o say_v the_o spouse_n cant._n 1._o v._n 4._o yea_o but_o wherein_o will_v they_o find_v they_o joy_n it_o follow_v in_o thy_o love_n but_o how_o will_v they_o find_v out_o the_o sweetness_n of_o that_o joy_n beginning_n now_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n be_v that_o which_o be_v able_a to_o produce_v that_o divine_a joy_n and_o that_o divine_a joy_n keep_v the_o heart_n from_o sink_v under_o sadness_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o gather_v up_o this_o conclusion_n that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n be_v of_o special_a efficacy_n for_o keep_v the_o soul_n from_o faint_v under_o trouble_n now_o you_o have_v see_v in_o a_o general_a way_n the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n to_o support_v the_o spirit_n from_o faint_v in_o time_n of_o trouble_n if_o you_o will_v see_v the_o sum_n of_o these_o five_o thing_n reduce_v into_o one_o argument_n take_v it_o thus_o if_o freedom_n from_o fear_n about_o a_o man_n eternal_a condition_n if_o assurance_n of_o a_o reward_n after_o all_o tribulation_n if_o rest_v upon_o christ_n in_o a_o time_n of_o trouble_n if_o strength_n of_o love_n to_o christ_n and_o also_o of_o divine_a joy_n through_o the_o spirit_n be_v efficacious_a to_o keep_v the_o heart_n from_o faint_v under_o trouble_n than_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n must_v needs_o be_v efficacious_a because_o it_o produce_v all_o these_o but_o now_o we_o have_v see_v that_o freedom_n of_o the_o soul_n 1_o from_o doubt_n about_o the_o eternal_a condition_n and_o 2_o assurance_n of_o a_o reward_n after_o all_o tribulation_n and_o 3_o a_o acquiescence_n or_o rest_v on_o christ_n in_o time_n of_o trouble_n together_o with_o 4_o strength_n of_o love_n to_o christ_n and_o 5_o divine_a joy_n be_v ever_o efficacious_a that_o way_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n but_o now_o more_o particular_o i_o shall_v show_v the_o efficacy_n of_o this_o cordial_a the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o love_n to_o keep_v the_o heart_n from_o faint_v under_o trouble_n in_o these_o four_o thing_n first_o in_o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n do_v especial_o in_o such_o a_o nature_n as_o have_v be_v of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n to_o believer_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o the_o very_a mention_n of_o the_o point_n that_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n to_o believer_n be_v a_o transcendent_a love_n make_v the_o heart_n of_o you_o to_o leap_v for_o joy_n tell_v i_o o_o believer_n can_v thou_o not_o wish_v to_o have_v thy_o care_n ever_o follow_v with_o this_o sound_n that_o christ_n love_v thou_o with_o a_o love_n pass_v knowledge_n something_o we_o have_v already_o hint_v and_o something_o more_o we_o shall_v add_v at_o this_o time_n yet_o because_o when_o i_o have_v say_v all_o that_o i_o love_v you_o in_o such_o a_o transcendent_a manner_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v will_v not_o let_v you_o always_o be_v under_o those_o great_a suffering_n which_o you_o do_v his_o great_a love_n for_o the_o present_a make_v he_o sympathize_v with_o you_o in_o all_o your_o affliction_n he_o be_v afflict_v man_n that_o persecute_v you_o they_o persecute_v he_o that_o love_v you_o he_o look_v upon_o your_o suffering_n as_o his_o own_o and_o because_o heelove_v you_o so_o transcendent_o he_o will_v ere_o long_o tell_v those_o that_o persecute_v you_o the_o same_z terribly_z believe_v it_o christ_n that_o have_v appear_v to_o you_o in_o this_o say_v i_o have_v love_v you_o with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n and_o therefore_o with_o love_a kindness_n have_v i_o draw_v you_o out_o of_o the_o state_n full_o and_o clear_o reveal_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o by_o the_o study_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o now_o of_o all_o knowledge_n the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v most_o sacred_a so_o it_o be_v most_o satisfactory_a and_o of_o all_o thing_n in_o christ_n the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o love_n and_o as_o that_o be_v most_o satisfactory_a so_o it_o be_v most_o sweet_a it_o be_v this_o knowledge_n which_o the_o apostle_n here_o pray_v that_o the_o ephesian_n may_v obtain_v and_o by_o consequence_n that_o knowledge_n which_o all_o christian_n ought_v to_o desire_v and_o labour_n for_o it_o concern_v you_o not_o so_o much_o to_o know_v art_n and_o science_n though_o in_o themselves_o and_o their_o way_n they_o be_v necessary_a and_o of_o worth_n neither_o do_v it_o concein_o you_o at_o least_o so_o much_o to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o other_o truth_n of_o the_o scripture_n which_o in_o their_o place_n be_v very_o mine_n of_o love_n and_o it_o concern_v we_o to_o dig_v very_o deep_a into_o it_o and_o not_o content_v ourselves_o with_o a_o bare_a discovery_n of_o that_o golden_a oar_n or_o vein_n of_o love_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o superficies_n or_o top_n of_o the_o same_o mine_n and_o in_o which_o we_o may_v easy_o discover_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o very_a letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o it_o do_v concern_v we_o to_o endeavour_v to_o attain_v unto_o the_o deep_a and_o mysterial_a discovery_n thereof_o which_o saint_n by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o spirit_n come_v to_o attain_v experimental_a 2_o a_o spiritual_a and_o experimental_a 2_o yea_o and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o also_o to_o endeavour_v to_o get_v a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o this_o love_n that_o as_o the_o painter_n curious_o paint_a love_n by_o draw_v the_o type_n of_o it_o out_o of_o his_o own_o bosom_n so_o we_o in_o like_a manner_n may_v be_v able_a by_o our_o christian_a discourse_n to_o paint_v forth_o and_o to_o declare_v what_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v take_v especial_o the_o ground_n thereof_o out_o of_o our_o own_o bosom_n our_o own_o experience_n divine_n observe_v that_o the_o concernment_n some_o thing_n indeed_o as_o be_v accidental_a to_o some_o great_a truth_n and_o the_o discovery_n thereof_o be_v in_o that_o respect_n of_o concernment_n to_o be_v know_v and_o so_o may_v concern_v a_o man_n to_o endeavour_v for_o the_o knowledge_n thereof_o but_o now_o this_o knowledge_n have_v a_o necessity_n lay_v upon_o it_o and_o woe_n be_v to_o every_o soul_n that_o know_v yet_o not_o be_v of_o such_o necessary_a concernment_n to_o all_o but_o now_o this_o knowledge_n whereof_o we_o be_v speak_v be_v of_o necessary_a concernment_n for_o every_o soul_n that_o be_v name_v by_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o pretend_v to_o be_v a_o christian_a but_o especial_o every_o soul_n that_o be_v unite_v to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o be_v indeed_o a_o christian_a ought_v to_o labour_n for_o a_o solid_a knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n as_o the_o father_n in_o christ_n school_n be_v not_o above_o this_o knowledge_n so_o neither_o the_o babe_n and_o place_n and_o yet_o neglect_v this_o knowledge_n which_o be_v of_o such_o necessary_a concernment_n i_o do_v not_o altogether_o blame_v those_o who_o study_v this_o headship_n of_o christ_n i_o mean_v how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o may_v as_o one_o say_v of_o the_o schoolman_n be_v like_a unto_o traveller_n or_o man_n in_o a_o journey_n who_o have_v good_a bread_n about_o they_o but_o go_v gnaw_v and_o bite_v upon_o hard_a stone_n so_o indeed_o some_o man_n who_o have_v at_o least_o mean_n to_o have_v the_o bread_n of_o life_n christ_n love_n but_o they_o neglect_v it_o and_o spend_v their_o time_n in_o gnaw_v upon_o hard_a trivial_o at_o least_o not_o useful_a question_n be_v reprove_v o_o all_o you_o who_o so_o far_o spend_v yourselves_o about_o the_o obtain_n of_o any_o knowledge_n when_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n you_o do_v neglect_v the_o study_n of_o this_o knowledge_n the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v of_o necessary_a concernment_n last_o we_o shall_v add_v a_o word_n of_o exhortation_n to_o stir_v up_o all_o to_o the_o study_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n you_o who_o have_v spend_v or_o rather_o misspend_v many_o a_o precious_a hour_n in_o read_v of_o romanse_v
