but_o the_o gospel_n never_o command_v we_o to_o do_v any_o duty_n but_o there_o be_v a_o promise_n that_o engage_v the_o lord_n to_o help_v the_o soul_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o that_o duty_n and_o now_o be_v not_o here_o rest_n for_o the_o soul_n when_o the_o soul_n shall_v look_v upon_o the_o large_a extent_n of_o the_o duty_n that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n require_v of_o it_o the_o law_n require_v of_o i_o to_o love_v the_o lord_n with_o all_o my_o heart_n and_o with_o all_o my_o soul_n and_o with_o all_o my_o might_n and_o to_o keep_v his_o commandment_n and_o statute_n and_o to_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o go_v along_o in_o the_o artery_n that_o give_v life_n to_o the_o vein_n so_o now_o they_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n they_o know_v many_o duty_n that_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v i_o but_o except_o they_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o go_v along_o with_o they_o they_o have_v little_a life_n little_a activity_n to_o do_v the_o duty_n therefore_o christian_n when_o you_o hear_v any_o duty_n out_o of_o god_n word_n that_o you_o ought_v to_o perform_v consider_v here_o be_v the_o duty_n here_o be_v the_o vein_n i_o but_o where_o be_v the_o will_v say_v why_o then_o have_v not_o all_o their_o stony_a heart_n be_v take_v from_o they_o because_o the_o promise_n be_v absolute_a i_o answer_v it_o be_v absolute_a from_o any_o precedent_a and_o man_n in_o the_o world_n can_v give_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n and_o if_o you_o do_v understand_v this_o you_o will_v thereby_o go_v away_o convince_v of_o this_o truth_n well_o i_o see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o burden_n upon_o i_o howsoever_o i_o have_v not_o be_v sensible_a of_o it_o and_o it_o be_v such_o a_o burden_n as_o will_v press_v i_o down_o to_o eternal_a misery_n and_o i_o see_v now_o by_o this_o that_o i_o have_v need_n of_o a_o christ_n certain_o if_o congregation_n be_v sensible_a of_o this_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n oh_o how_o will_v their_o soul_n rejoice_v in_o this_o and_o praise_v the_o lord_n that_o their_o ear_n be_v bless_v to_o hear_v such_o a_o sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o this_o come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v i_o appeal_v a_o legal_a way_n and_o his_o performance_n may_v be_v rather_o a_o burden_n than_o that_o which_o shall_v do_v he_o good_a in_o the_o conclusion_n and_o bring_v he_o to_o life_n and_o except_o he_o do_v come_v to_o know_v furhe_a than_o yet_o he_o do_v to_o know_v the_o evangelical_a performance_n of_o duty_n he_o can_v have_v true_a rest_n in_o his_o soul_n now_o this_o as_o the_o other_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a consequence_n to_o many_o it_o may_v be_v divers_a that_o read_v this_o book_n may_v not_o so_o clear_o understand_v what_o this_o be_v they_o may_v not_o feel_v any_o such_o the_o law_n require_v yet_o i_o may_v do_v some_o outward_a performance_n now_o for_o i_o to_o go_v about_o such_o a_o work_n to_o endeavour_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v all_o the_o work_n that_o the_o law_n require_v not_o only_o the_o outward_a part_n but_o the_o will_v work_v and_o to_o be_v put_v upon_o to_o struggle_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v that_o which_o i_o have_v no_o inward_a principle_n to_o do_v that_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a all_o motion_n of_o nature_n that_o be_v from_o a_o external_a principle_n be_v violent_a and_o so_o tedious_a heavy_a and_o troublesome_a so_o this_o birth_n of_o nature_n child_n when_o they_o be_v first_o bear_v they_o shoot_v up_o mighty_o take_v a_o child_n that_o come_v very_o little_a out_o of_o the_o womb_n come_v to_o it_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o year_n after_o the_o child_n be_v shoot_v up_o a_o great_a deal_n you_o may_v see_v it_o a_o great_a deal_n tall_a and_o big_a every_o limb_n increase_v but_o take_v it_o at_o ten_o year_n old_a and_o it_o grow_v not_o so_o much_o then_o as_o at_o the_o first_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o come_v out_o of_o the_o worm_n womb_n it_o can_v not_o subsist_v if_o nature_n do_v not_o hasten_v to_o strengthen_v itself_o at_o first_o so_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o christ_n at_o first_o they_o shoot_v up_o and_o grow_v to_o such_o enlargement_n of_o spirit_n and_o they_o sensible_a of_o the_o sin_n that_o be_v in_o their_o soul_n i_o dare_v in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n pronounce_v that_o man_n or_o woman_n dead_a as_o it_o be_v in_o nature_n though_o we_o may_v loose_v the_o sense_n of_o see_v or_o of_o smell_v or_o of_o hear_v yet_o we_o may_v live_v yet_o the_o sense_n of_o feeling_n or_o touch_v that_o can_v be_v lose_v if_o we_o be_v live_v if_o we_o lose_v the_o sense_n of_o feeling_n certain_o that_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v dead_a no_o sense_n inward_o or_o outward_o there_o be_v some_o sense_n of_o feeling_n so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v life_n so_o here_o though_o there_o may_v be_v many_o weakness_n in_o man_n and_o woman_n yet_o when_o they_o do_v not_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o corruption_n at_o all_o certain_o they_o be_v only_o out_o of_o pity_n as_o to_o those_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n but_o out_o of_o love_n and_o know_v that_o by_o this_o you_o come_v to_o be_v fit_v for_o corruption_n as_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v a_o special_a end_n why_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o dissolve_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n our_o corruption_n be_v from_o the_o devil_n and_o be_v tie_v close_o to_o we_o and_o they_o easy_o beset_v we_o as_o the_o expression_n be_v now_o i_o say_v it_o be_v the_o end_n why_o jesus_n christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o dissolve_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n that_o be_v when_o he_o see_v his_o poor_a servant_n under_o this_o burden_n and_o to_o cry_v out_o under_o it_o as_o paul_n do_v who_o this_o corrupt_a nature_n do_v not_o lie_v still_o but_o be_v always_o work_v stir_a act_v and_o put_v itself_o forth_o unto_o that_o that_o be_v evil_a now_o the_o motion_n of_o sin_n be_v burdensome_a 1._o for_o first_o they_o be_v continual_o fight_v against_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n now_o to_o have_v a_o continual_a fight_v and_o combat_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v it_o not_o very_o burdensome_a as_o a_o family_n where_o there_o be_v a_o continual_a fall_v out_o never_o a_o day_n that_o you_o come_v to_o some_o family_n but_o there_o be_v fall_v out_o and_o fight_v be_v it_o not_o burdensome_a to_o live_v in_o such_o a_o family_n now_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n there_o be_v a_o continual_a fight_n if_o one_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o family_n where_o the_o husband_n and_o wife_n be_v continual_o fight_v one_o with_o a_o other_o and_o the_o child_n and_o servant_n fly_v in_o the_o face_n one_o of_o a_o other_o that_o will_v be_v burdensome_a now_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n there_o be_v the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n continual_o fight_v one_o against_o another_o be_v not_o war_n in_o a_o kingdom_n a_o burden_n and_o especial_o when_o man_n shall_v fight_v to_o make_v themselves_o slave_n as_o i_o say_v before_o will_v any_o man_n ever_o have_v think_v it_o possible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o folly_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o any_o in_o england_n to_o fight_v to_o make_v themselves_o and_o their_o posterity_n slave_n that_o the_o very_a victory_n that_o they_o shall_v get_v be_v to_o bring_v they_o to_o be_v slave_n now_o the_o fight_n with_o corruption_n it_o be_v for_o this_o end_n 2_o and_o then_o the_o stir_v of_o corruption_n be_v sudden_a many_o time_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o be_v gracious_a and_o godly_a that_o find_v their_o heart_n in_o some_o good_a temper_n and_o work_n for_o god_n sudden_o their_o corruption_n will_v be_v stir_v in_o they_o unexpected_o which_o be_v extreme_a grief_n and_o damp_n to_o their_o spirit_n and_o cause_v many_o time_n exceed_v much_o trouble_n to_o they_o sudden_o that_o no_o body_n can_v understand_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o but_o themselves_o 3._o and_o then_o the_o stir_v of_o corruption_n be_v violent_a the_o stir_v of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v many_o time_n extreme_a violent_a and_o outrageous_a the_o devil_n stir_v up_o their_o corruption_n and_o indeed_o the_o corruption_n themselves_o be_v as_o it_o be_v devil_n in_o they_o that_o do_v as_o the_o devil_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o be_v cast_v out_o of_o he_o that_o be_v possess_v he_o cause_v he_o to_o foam_v at_o the_o mouth_n so_o there_o be_v extreme_a violence_n of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n it_o be_v a_o lamentable_a conditition_n of_o the_o poor_a child_n that_o be_v possess_v in_o the_o gospel_n when_o the_o father_n come_v to_o christ_n for_o help_v because_o when_o the_o evil_a spirit_n come_v it_o cast_v he_o into_o the_o fire_n and_o into_o the_o water_n so_o corruption_n be_v so_o violent_a in_o
that_o be_v his_o very_a soul_n his_o life_n his_o peace_n his_o comfort_n all_o his_o happiness_n he_o have_v commit_v to_o he_o and_o so_o leave_v all_o with_o he_o now_o then_o take_v all_o these_o together_o and_o when_o christ_n call_v the_o sinner_n to_o come_v to_o he_o that_o be_v o_o sinner_n first_o believe_v this_o that_o i_o be_o the_o great_a redeemer_n that_o be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o stand_v between_o god_n wrath_n and_o your_o soul_n and_o to_o make_v up_o peace_n between_o god_n and_o you_o and_o let_v there_o be_v a_o unsettle_n of_o your_o heart_n from_o whatsoever_o heretofore_o your_o soul_n do_v rest_n in_o creature_n comfort_n your_o own_o righteousness_n duty_n self_n respect_n and_o end_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v let_v your_o heart_n be_v take_v run_v the_o tenure_n of_o the_o law_n but_o here_o be_v ease_n for_o thy_o soul_n if_o thou_o do_v understand_v how_o the_o law_n run_v thy_o heart_n can_v but_o sink_v within_o thou_o but_o this_o be_v that_o that_o give_v ease_n to_o the_o soul_n i_o be_o now_o come_v under_o another_o condition_n i_o be_v in_o christ_n christ_n give_v rest_n and_o ease_n unto_o the_o soul_n of_o those_o that_o come_v to_o he_o that_o their_o desire_n and_o endeavour_n shall_v he_o accept_v of_o god_n as_o performance_n now_o this_o be_v a_o bless_a estate_n five_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o christ_n as_o it_o have_v reference_n to_o deliverance_n from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o now_o all_o the_o duty_n that_o god_n require_v at_o thy_o hand_n be_v require_v in_o a_o sweet_a and_o a_o gentle_a way_n the_o service_n that_o god_n require_v be_v require_v of_o thou_o in_o a_o gentle_a and_o a_o love_a way_n god_n indeed_o come_v and_o require_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o the_o law_n require_v of_o thou_o i_o but_o he_o come_v to_o draw_v thy_o soul_n with_o the_o cord_n of_o love_n we_o beseech_v you_o say_v the_o apostle_n by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n rom._n 12.1_o that_o you_o give_v up_o yourselves_o a_o live_a sacrifice_n holy_a and_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n which_o be_v your_o reasonable_a service_n we_o beseech_v you_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n now_o the_o bondslave_n that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n they_o have_v not_o duty_n require_v of_o they_o by_o such_o cord_n and_o bond_n of_o love_n but_o if_o thou_o of_o the_o law_n but_o now_o believer_n in_o christ_n their_o duty_n be_v require_v by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n we_o as_o ambassador_n beseech_v say_v the_o apostle_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o love_n any_o consolation_n such_o kind_n of_o argument_n be_v use_v to_o they_o and_o be_v it_o that_o we_o preach_v only_o to_o believer_n these_o kind_n of_o argument_n be_v only_o necessary_a and_o it_o become_v those_o that_o be_v draw_v by_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v draw_v by_o such_o argument_n and_o it_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n that_o your_o soul_n be_v draw_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n if_o you_o find_v the_o lord_n do_v draw_v your_o heart_n that_o way_n and_o that_o those_o duty_n of_o obedience_n that_o former_o you_o be_v put_v upon_o in_o a_o rigorous_a way_n mere_o by_o the_o terror_n of_o your_o conscience_n your_o conscience_n flash_v hell_n fire_n in_o your_o face_n if_o you_o do_v not_o perform_v they_o if_o now_o you_o find_v that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n draw_v your_o heart_n more_o powerful_o it_o be_v true_a every_o way_n you_o shall_v give_v to_o god_n obedience_n upon_o any_o term_n but_o now_o when_o you_o find_v that_o god_n draw_v your_o soul_n this_o way_n it_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o you_o come_v to_o have_v rest_n in_o christ_n we_o read_v in_o the_o history_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n a_o type_n of_o these_o thing_n that_o i_o be_o now_o speak_v of_o that_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n be_v lay_v under_o the_o mercy_n seat_n you_o shall_v find_v in_o the_o story_n that_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n be_v lay_v under_o the_o mercy_n seat_n between_o the_o cherubin_n under_o the_o mercy_n seat_n there_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n be_v lay_v that_o be_v the_o place_n that_o god_n appoint_v for_o it_o to_o show_v that_o even_o thus_o do_v the_o law_n of_o god_n come_v now_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n it_o come_v upon_o they_o as_o it_o be_v under_o the_o mercy_n seat_n in_o the_o mercy_n seat_n believer_n look_v upon_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n lie_v at_o the_o mercy_n seat_n that_o be_v every_o commandment_n come_v unto_o they_o in_o a_o gracious_a allure_a way_n together_o with_o abundance_n of_o mercy_n to_o draw_v their_o heart_n unto_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o six_o come_v to_o christ_n you_o have_v rest_n from_o the_o law_n in_o this_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n do_v much_o melt_v the_o heart_n and_o when_o it_o have_v melt_v the_o heart_n to_o milk_v out_o the_o flagon_n of_o it_o than_o this_o melt_a of_o heart_n be_v accept_v exceed_o by_o god_n be_v very_o precious_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n now_o this_o come_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n and_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a rest_n of_o soul_n to_o know_v this_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o any_o of_o you_o to_o say_v it_o be_v true_a we_o be_v all_o sinner_n but_o god_n know_v i_o mourn_v for_o my_o sin_n i_o be_o trouble_v for_o my_o sin_n that_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o thou_o friend_n but_o be_v thou_o one_o that_o art_n deliver_v from_o thy_o natural_a condition_n from_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v thou_o one_o that_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n and_o bring_v to_o christ_n be_v thou_o one_o that_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o believer_n be_v a_o member_n of_o christ_n then_o thy_o repentance_n and_o mourning_n be_v acccept_v as_o now_o it_o be_v in_o many_o case_n between_o man_n and_o man_n some_o man_n be_v in_o such_o a_o capacity_n that_o if_o they_o do_v such_o a_o thing_n it_o be_v accept_v but_o if_o another_o man_n that_o be_v not_o in_o the_o same_o capacity_n do_v the_o same_o thing_n he_o will_v not_o be_v accept_v so_o it_o be_v here_o those_o man_n that_o be_v in_o this_o capacity_n in_o christ_n and_o have_v together_o with_o the_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n the_o sorrow_n of_o christ_n present_v to_o the_o father_n can_v thou_o when_o thou_o be_v sorrow_v for_o thy_o sin_n present_v the_o sorrow_n of_o jesus_n christ_n by_o faith_n unto_o the_o father_n then_o thou_o be_v accept_v but_o know_v this_o that_o no_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v accept_v but_o such_o as_o be_v join_v with_o the_o presentation_n of_o the_o sorrow_n of_o christ_n unto_o the_o father_n now_o what_o a_o ease_n be_v this_o to_o the_o soul_n that_o now_o the_o heart_n have_v a_o mean_n to_o melt_v it_o for_o the_o heart_n be_v harden_v before_o the_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v such_o that_o the_o heart_n remain_v harden_v it_o be_v no_o other_o sorrow_n but_o this_o as_o it_o be_v with_o marble-stone_n the_o marble-stone_n be_v hard_a but_o yet_o in_o wet_a wether_n it_o will_v give_v and_o be_v very_o moist_a but_o still_o it_o be_v as_o hard_a as_o it_o be_v it_o be_v a_o stone_n still_o so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o that_o be_v trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n be_v only_o the_o trouble_n that_o come_v from_o the_o law_n they_o be_v trouble_v but_o yet_o there_o remain_v much_o hardness_n in_o their_o heart_n much_o peevishness_n and_o frowardness_n against_o god_n and_o against_o man_n you_o shall_v find_v in_o many_o people_n who_o have_v trouble_v of_o conscience_n yet_o there_o be_v much_o peevishness_n and_o frowardness_n in_o they_o against_o god_n and_o against_o man_n now_o when_o you_o see_v this_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o people_n manifest_v in_o their_o expression_n way_n and_o conversation_n remember_v the_o stone_n that_o you_o see_v upon_o pavement_n in_o wet_a wether_n they_o give_v and_o may_v be_v water_n trickle_v down_o from_o they_o and_o yet_o they_o remain_v hard_o still_o but_o now_o when_o the_o gospel_n come_v it_o do_v not_o only_o cause_v some_o sorrow_n but_o the_o heart_n melt_v and_o this_o be_v accept_v as_o very_o precious_a before_o god_n and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o we_o have_v in_o scripture_n so_o many_o expression_n of_o god_n high_a esteem_n of_o break_a heart_n and_o contrite_a spirit_n and_o how_o god_n look_v at_o they_o he_o that_o dwell_v on_o high_a yet_o look_v to_o he_o that_o be_v of_o a_o humble_a and_o contrite_a spirit_n and_o that_o tremble_v at_o his_o word_n and_o let_v i_o speak_v this_o one_o word_n for_o the_o ease_n of_o they_o that_o be_v trouble_v and_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n those_o tear_n that_o come_v from_o thy_o melt_a heart_n through_o the_o
grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o be_v of_o all_o thing_n most_o precious_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n next_o to_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n next_o to_o the_o drop_n of_o christ_n blood_n thy_o mourning_n lament_v spirit_n be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o precious_a thing_n in_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n god_n treasure_n up_o every_o one_o of_o they_o and_o this_o be_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o soul_n may_v have_v abundance_n of_o rest_n therefore_o in_o christ_n when_o thou_o come_v to_o know_v that_o thy_o mourning_n for_o thy_o offence_n be_v accept_v of_o god_n seven_o the_o ease_n that_o the_o soul_n have_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n be_v this_o that_o whereas_o before_o through_o the_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n sin_n do_v make_v thy_o soul_n a_o object_n of_o god_n wrath_n take_v sin_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o and_o come_v from_o thou_o god_n have_v no_o respect_n in_o christ_n towards_o thou_o sin_n make_v thy_o soul_n a_o object_n of_o god_n wrath_n yea_o and_o of_o hatred_n too_o for_o so_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o plain_o that_o the_o lord_n hate_v the_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n now_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n according_a to_o this_o invitation_n come_v to_o i_o you_o that_o be_v lade_v now_o your_o sin_n be_v look_v upon_o in_o christ_n do_v rather_o make_v you_o a_o object_n of_o pity_n and_o compassion_n to_o god_n not_o from_o any_o virtue_n not_o from_o any_o thing_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n but_o in_o regard_n of_o your_o condition_n as_o thus_o let_v a_o tender_a mother_n look_v upon_o the_o child_n that_o be_v sick_a that_o be_v wound_v it_o be_v true_a the_o mother_n can_v love_v the_o distemper_n or_o love_v the_o wound_n the_o mother_n will_v not_o have_v the_o sickness_n or_o the_o wound_n upon_o the_o child_n but_o do_v not_o the_o sickness_n or_o wound_n that_o be_v upon_o the_o child_n make_v the_o child_n to_o be_v a_o object_n of_o pity_n and_o compassion_n make_v the_o bowel_n of_o a_o tender_a father_n and_o mother_n to_o yern_v so_o much_o the_o more_o to_o the_o child_n so_o here_o the_o lord_n now_o look_v upon_o thy_o sin_n be_v in_o christ_n as_o thy_o sickness_n as_o thy_o wound_n and_o therefore_o do_v pity_v thou_o as_o under_o thy_o affliction_n rather_o than_o under_o thy_o sin_n for_o the_o truth_n be_v all_o those_o that_o be_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n and_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n they_o look_v upon_o their_o own_o sin_n as_o their_o affliction_n as_o the_o great_a affliction_n they_o have_v in_o the_o world_n as_o i_o show_v when_o i_o speak_v of_o the_o load_n and_o burden_n of_o corruption_n that_o remain_v in_o their_o heart_n now_o god_n therefore_o look_v up_o on_o thy_o sin_n as_o thy_o affliction_n and_o as_o for_o any_o other_o thing_n that_o be_v thy_o affliction_n as_o it_o be_v the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n or_o the_o like_a christ_n undertake_v for_o that_o and_o so_o thou_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o wrath_n that_o it_o do_v deserve_v and_o those_o evil_a effect_n that_o shall_v come_v of_o it_o through_o the_o revenge_a justice_n of_o god_n christ_n have_v undertake_v it_o but_o yet_o it_o remain_v thy_o affliction_n though_o thou_o be_v deliver_v from_o guiltiness_n and_o condemnation_n yet_o one_o that_o have_v a_o gracious_a heart_n reason_n thus_o though_o i_o be_v deliver_v from_o my_o sin_n from_o the_o gild_n of_o it_o from_o the_o condemn_a power_n that_o the_o law_n have_v through_o my_o sin_n yet_o it_o be_v my_o affliction_n my_o trouble_n and_o so_o i_o look_v upon_o it_o now_o peace_n and_o rest_n be_v to_o that_o soul_n from_o what_o the_o law_n can_v require_v so_o that_o as_o we_o go_v along_o we_o may_v not_o only_o see_v the_o benefit_n we_o have_v by_o christ_n but_o who_o they_o be_v that_o be_v thus_o deliver_v those_o who_o though_o they_o know_v they_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o it_o yet_o they_o do_v account_v their_o sin_n the_o affliction_n of_o their_o soul_n whereas_o other_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a they_o apprehend_v their_o soul_n as_o guilty_a and_o under_o condemnation_n but_o if_o they_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o they_o will_v look_v upon_o their_o sin_n as_o their_o wound_n and_o affliction_n the_o saint_n they_o see_v that_o they_o be_v now_o make_v the_o object_n of_o god_n pity_n and_o compassion_n towards_o they_o and_o hence_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o christ_n be_v willing_a if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o find_v many_o excuse_n that_o may_v be_v make_v for_o his_o poor_a servant_n thou_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o find_v out_o any_o excuse_n if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n that_o may_v alleviate_v and_o lessen_v thy_o sin_n christ_n will_v find_v it_o our_o and_o lessen_v it_o for_o thou_o you_o know_v what_o christ_n say_v to_o his_o disciple_n when_o they_o be_v sleep_v and_o can_v not_o watch_v one_o hour_n though_o he_o rebuke_n they_o yet_o he_o say_v though_o the_o flesh_n be_v weak_a yet_o the_o spirit_n be_v willing_a mark_v how_o christ_n excuse_v they_o they_o do_v not_o say_v when_o christ_n come_v and_o say_v can_v you_o watch_v with_o i_o one_o hour_n alas_o it_o be_v true_a master_n their_o care_n to_o lessen_v their_o sin_n but_o they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o aggravate_v their_o sin_n and_o lay_v it_o upon_o their_o heart_n for_o the_o humble_v of_o their_o soul_n but_o christ_n undertake_v to_o excuse_v they_o and_o therefore_o you_o that_o have_v so_o many_o excuse_n for_o your_o sin_n just_a as_o your_o grandfather_n adam_n have_v he_o put_v it_o off_o to_o the_o woman_n and_o the_o woman_n unto_o the_o serpent_n and_o one_o to_o another_o so_o you_o it_o be_v true_a my_o nature_n be_v passionate_a and_o i_o be_o froward_a by_o nature_n and_o a_o hundred_o such_o excuse_n man_n have_v whereas_o all_o thy_o care_n shall_v be_v to_o humble_v thy_o soul_n for_o thy_o sin_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n to_o alleviate_v thy_o sin_n and_o lessen_v it_o christ_n will_v do_v that_o and_o the_o more_o thou_o excuse_v thyself_o the_o great_a will_v be_v thy_o sin_n and_o it_o be_v better_a for_o thou_o for_o another_o to_o excuse_v it_o than_o thyself_o as_o when_o a_o child_n or_o servant_n shall_v offend_v and_o one_o that_o be_v a_o near_a friend_n or_o neighbour_n shall_v come_v and_o excuse_v they_o this_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n better_o than_o if_o they_o do_v it_o themselves_o now_o those_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n they_o have_v no_o excuse_n to_o be_v make_v for_o they_o but_o those_o that_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n they_o have_v christ_n to_o make_v all_o the_o excuse_n for_o they_o oh_o take_v heed_n of_o abuse_v the_o rich_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n this_o i_o know_v that_o this_o be_v such_o a_o pure_a quality_n that_o it_o have_v not_o such_o a_o malignant_a quality_n in_o it_o that_o it_o will_v be_v abuse_v and_o where_o you_o see_v any_o such_o quality_n know_v that_o they_o have_v it_o not_o aright_o they_o have_v something_o else_o instead_o of_o the_o thing_n as_o sometime_o you_o shall_v see_v two_o thing_n as_o like_v one_o another_o as_o can_v be_v suppose_v drink_v make_v with_o some_o kind_n of_o composition_n they_o shall_v look_v just_a like_o one_o another_o but_o one_o shall_v have_v some_o venom_n in_o it_o enough_o to_o kill_v one_o and_o the_o other_o shall_v be_v wholesome_a and_o able_a to_o recover_v one_o yet_o both_o shall_v have_v the_o same_o â—ur_n and_o the_o same_o taste_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o free_a grace_v in_o christ_n you_o may_v have_v the_o same_o word_n speak_v â—e_z thing_n express_v to_o one_o and_o to_o another_o the_o very_a same_o thing_n preach_v for_o the_o outside_n of_o it_o for_o the_o word_n for_o the_o expression_n in_o a_o sermon_n the_o same_o doctrine_n raise_v for_o the_o expression_n and_o yet_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o carry_v that_o one_o shall_v have_v a_o malignancy_n in_o it_o and_o the_o other_o shall_v have_v a_o sovereign_a power_n in_o it_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n have_v the_o true_a rest_n in_o christ_n that_o rest_n have_v not_o such_o a_o malignant_a power_n to_o make_v the_o heart_n worse_o by_o it_o but_o of_o that_o i_o shall_v speak_v more_o afterward_o eight_o when_o thou_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n thy_o soul_n
may_v have_v rest_n in_o he_o for_o in_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o undertake_n by_o a_o surety_n through_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o he_o thou_o have_v reveal_v to_o thou_o that_o there_o be_v a_o undertake_n by_o surety_n this_o be_v a_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n whereas_o the_o law_n require_v perfect_a obedience_n at_o our_o hand_n in_o our_o own_o person_n their_o law_n require_v of_o the_o soul_n that_o it_o shall_v pay_v the_o debt_n in_o its_o own_o person_n the_o soul_n that_o sin_n shall_v die_v now_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n come_v and_o tell_v thou_o of_o a_o surety_n and_o such_o a_o surety_n as_o god_n himself_o profess_v he_o be_v well_o please_v to_o accept_v of_o and_o be_v as_o content_v with_o he_o as_o he_o be_v to_o have_v the_o debt_n pay_v by_o the_o creature_n by_o the_o debtor_n himself_o and_o this_o be_v a_o great_a ease_n will_v it_o not_o be_v a_o great_a ease_n to_o any_o of_o you_o that_o when_o a_o creditor_n shall_v to_o the_o law_n that_o be_v such_o satitfaction_n as_o the_o lawgiver_n himself_o do_v accept_v of_o which_o be_v only_o in_o christ_n not_o all_o that_o i_o can_v do_v can_v possible_o do_v it_o if_o i_o can_v conceive_v that_o god_n be_v so_o merciful_a as_o to_o accept_v of_o any_o thing_n i_o can_v do_v yet_o it_o can_v not_o be_v satisfaction_n to_o the_o law_n but_o now_o our_o will_v be_v forget_v so_o as_o the_o soul_n will_v yet_o perish_v notwithstanding_o and_o the_o law_n can_v not_o assure_v any_o man_n of_o continuance_n to_o the_o end_n the_o law_n can_v never_o go_v on_o divers_a year_n yet_o they_o can_v never_o have_v assurance_n but_o that_o they_o may_v fall_v at_o last_o and_o so_o perish_v well_o but_o now_o come_v to_o christ_n there_o be_v not_o only_a satisfaction_n for_o what_o be_v past_a but_o a_o assurance_n of_o hold_v out_o unto_o the_o end_n a_o assurance_n that_o this_o covenant_n that_o thou_o be_v now_o come_v under_o in_o christ_n that_o there_o shall_v never_o be_v any_o forfiture_n of_o it_o and_o that_o be_v a_o mighty_a ease_n and_o rest_n the_o ground_n and_o foundation_n of_o divers_a of_o these_o thing_n be_v open_v before_o when_o i_o show_v how_o in_o christ_n we_o be_v free_v from_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o sin_n but_o now_o these_o be_v thing_n that_o do_v flow_v from_o thence_o and_o the_o present_n of_o several_a step_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o christ_n not_o only_o to_o see_v it_o in_o the_o lump_n but_o see_v how_o it_o stream_n in_o the_o particular_n of_o it_o to_o have_v these_o present_v before_o their_o soul_n it_o be_v a_o mighty_a help_n to_o their_o faith_n and_o comfort_n and_o this_o last_o that_o i_o have_v speak_v of_o it_o be_v not_o less_o than_o the_o rest_n but_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o complete_n of_o all_o the_o former_a that_o the_o soul_n that_o come_v to_o christ_n have_v this_o rest_n in_o christ_n that_o it_o be_v bring_v into_o a_o covenant_n and_o with_o assurance_n that_o there_o shall_v never_o be_v any_o forfiture_n of_o that_o covenant_n for_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o god_n shall_v give_v grace_n unto_o the_o soul_n so_o as_o be_v shall_v never_o come_v to_o forfeit_v to_o loose_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n they_o may_v for_o the_o present_a loose_a some_o comfort_n of_o the_o covenant_n but_o to_o be_v put_v from_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n it_o shall_v never_o be_v it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n that_o all_o that_o come_v to_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v cast_v off_o from_o he_o again_o it_o cost_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v a_o privilege_n that_o believer_n have_v more_o than_o ever_o adam_n have_v adam_n be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o he_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v the_o covenant_n i_o but_o adam_n never_o have_v this_o promise_n from_o god_n that_o he_o shall_v never_o forfeit_v it_o that_o he_o shall_v never_o so_o break_v the_o covenant_n as_o to_o be_v undo_v adam_n never_o have_v that_o promise_n but_o now_o all_o believer_n that_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n they_o have_v this_o engagement_n upon_o a_o sure_a ground_n for_o it_o be_v upon_o a_o dear_a purchase_n christ_n have_v lay_v down_o his_o blood_n for_o thou_o for_o this_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o any_o other_o thing_n that_o thy_o soul_n may_v come_v into_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n never_o to_o be_v forfeit_v and_o now_o if_o all_o these_o particular_n be_v put_v together_o and_o these_o thing_n be_v make_v clear_a to_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n if_o there_o be_v a_o eye_n of_o faith_n to_o behold_v the_o reality_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v persent_v to_o you_o i_o appeal_v to_o you_o be_v there_o not_o rest_v to_o those_o that_o come_v to_o christ_n be_v it_o not_o worth_a a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n be_v there_o not_o that_o that_o will_v recompense_v all_o at_o last_o whatever_o trouble_v there_o be_v at_o first_o the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n and_o the_o like_a yet_o when_o you_o come_v to_o christ_n there_o be_v that_o that_o will_v recompense_v all_o your_o former_a trouble_n as_o i_o say_v before_o in_o the_o conclude_a of_o the_o other_o particular_a so_o may_v i_o say_v of_o this_o as_o it_o be_v in_o psalm_n 116._o and_o now_o my_o soul_n return_v unto_o thy_o rest_n so_o may_v all_o believer_n say_v upon_o good_a ground_n if_o these_o thing_n be_v true_a that_o we_o have_v now_o hear_v then_o my_o soul_n that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o stand_v before_o god_n as_o their_o judge_n and_o look_v upon_o what_o they_o perform_v as_o that_o which_o their_o soul_n depend_v upon_o that_o if_o i_o do_v not_o do_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n that_o be_v command_v i_o my_o soul_n lie_v upon_o it_o alas_o this_o straiten_n the_o heart_n and_o it_o be_v put_v into_o a_o condition_n of_o read_v perform_v duty_n and_o let_v all_o the_o duty_n you_o perform_v be_v in_o way_n of_o blessing_n my_o name_n and_o praise_v of_o i_o for_o give_v of_o you_o your_o life_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a ground_n of_o all_o that_o god_n require_v of_o such_o as_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n mere_o that_o thou_o shall_v go_v out_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n for_o pardon_v thy_o sin_n and_o accept_v of_o thou_o in_o his_o son_n and_o so_o likewise_o if_o so_o be_v a_o man_n be_v among_o his_o enemy_n and_o shall_v be_v set_v to_o do_v he_o go_v about_o it_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o dread_n and_o fear_n but_o now_o if_o this_o man_n shall_v come_v home_o to_o his_o father_n house_n and_o his_o father_n set_v he_o about_o a_o work_n and_o he_o do_v it_o so_o that_o though_o he_o will_v not_o do_v the_o work_n yet_o he_o shall_v not_o loose_v his_o life_n he_o shall_v go_v about_o it_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o believer_n when_o they_o come_v to_o christ_n they_o come_v to_o their_o father_n house_n and_o their_o father_n set_v they_o about_o work_n but_o so_o go_v a_o journey_n and_o know_v the_o end_n of_o his_o journey_n shall_v be_v very_o glorious_a to_o he_o if_o it_o be_v to_o receive_v a_o crown_n a_o kingdom_n though_o it_o be_v a_o boisterous_a the_o way_n of_o eternal_a life_n but_o thou_o be_v in_o eternal_a life_n itself_o not_o only_o in_o the_o way_n to_o the_o kingdom_n but_o in_o the_o kingdom_n not_o only_o in_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n but_o in_o heaven_n it_o be_v eternal_a life_n this_o be_v eternal_a life_n to_o know_v thou_o the_o true_a god_n and_o thy_o son_n who_o thou_o have_v send_v into_o the_o world_n and_o that_o place_n in_o the_o epistle_n of_o st._n john_n he_o speak_v of_o a_o murderer_n one_o that_o do_v hate_v his_o brother_n in_o the_o first_o of_o john_n 3.15_o whosoever_o hate_v his_o brother_n his_o ordinance_n and_o to_o pray_v for_o the_o spirit_n no_o evidence_n that_o can_v be_v give_v can_v quiet_v the_o heart_n till_o that_o come_v to_o pass_v but_o now_o if_o so_o be_v the_o soul_n have_v gain_v this_o what_o a_o thing_n be_v it_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o loose_v it_o again_o in_o isaiah_n 26._o â—0_n come_v my_o people_n enter_v thou_o into_o thy_o chamber_n and_o shut_v the_o door_n about_o thou_o hide_v thyself_o as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o little_a moment_n until_o the_o indignation_n be_v overpast_v what_o be_v it_o to_o come_v and_o enter_v into_o our_o chamber_n to_o have_v and_o whence_o it_o come_v do_v it_o come_v from_o god_n or_o no_o or_o from_o the_o devil_n many_o people_n they_o think_v the_o word_n to_o be_v a_o rule_n for_o their_o faith_n but_o they_o think_v the_o word_n be_v not_o a_o rule_n for_o their_o fear_n you_o must_v have_v as_o good_a a_o warrant_n for_o refuse_v any_o comfort_n that_o be_v tender_v to_o you_o as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o take_n of_o any_o comfort_n and_o if_o you_o will_v observe_v that_o rule_n that_o you_o will_v never_o refuse_v comfort_n but_o you_o will_v have_v a_o word_n to_o warrant_v you_o if_o the_o lord_n come_v to_o you_o and_o say_v why_o do_v you_o refuse_v such_o comfort_n and_o you_o say_v i_o be_v in_o fear_n and_o jealousy_n i_o but_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v what_o word_n have_v you_o for_o it_o what_o be_v you_o able_a to_o answer_v oh_o this_o be_v that_o that_o god_n will_v require_v of_o you_o for_o it_o be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n that_o whenas_o there_o be_v a_o word_n to_o ground_v thy_o faith_n upon_o and_o nothing_o but_o jealousy_n to_o ground_v thy_o fear_n yet_o thou_o will_v make_v thy_o jealousy_n and_o thy_o fear_n to_o weigh_v down_o the_o word_n six_o again_o according_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o thy_o inlargment_n so_o let_v thy_o humiliation_n be_v as_o thou_o find_v thy_o heart_n enlarge_v with_o joy_n at_o the_o same_o time_n let_v thy_o grace_n work_v downward_o in_o way_n of_o humiliation_n observe_v a_o proportion_n between_o thy_o joy_n and_o humiliation_n many_o people_n be_v enlarge_v upon_o the_o joy_n they_o have_v in_o christ_n but_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v and_o therefore_o they_o vanish_v seven_o again_o be_v not_o satisfy_v mere_o that_o thou_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o a_o believer_n but_o labour_n to_o be_v thorough_o ground_v that_o thou_o be_v in_o christ_n for_o who_o know_v what_o trouble_v and_o desertion_n thou_o may_v meet_v with_o all_o labour_v to_o root_v thy_o soul_n be_v establish_v in_o christ_n ground_v in_o christ_n to_o be_v a_o ground_a christian_a aâ—d_v therefore_o not_o to_o live_v upon_o sense_n but_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n when_o thou_o have_v sense_n eight_o last_o improve_v thy_o rest_n for_o god_n be_v sure_a to_o do_v much_o work_n when_o the_o lord_n give_v thou_o rest_n as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v of_o outward_a peace_n it_o bring_v plenty_n so_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o peace_n thaâ—_n god_n give_v in_o our_o conscience_n and_o the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n shall_v make_v we_o plentiful_a in_o all_o good_a work_n and_o by_o these_o rule_n if_o thou_o do_v keep_v the_o door_n shut_v against_o temptation_n if_o according_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o thy_o inlargment_n thy_o humiliation_n be_v if_o thou_o be_v not_o satisfy_v mere_o that_o thou_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o a_o believer_n but_o labore_v to_o be_v thorough_o ground_v that_o thou_o be_v in_o christ_n if_o thou_o do_v root_v thy_o soul_n in_o christ_n and_o if_o thou_o do_v improve_v thy_o rest_n to_o god_n to_o do_v much_o work_n for_o god_n when_o he_o give_v thou_o rest_n thus_o do_v thou_o shall_v have_v rest_n a_o abide_a rest_n unto_o thy_o soul_n thus_o thou_o shall_v be_v in_o thy_o chamber_n of_o rest_n with_o the_o door_n shut_v while_o the_o indignation_n be_v overpast_v thus_o thou_o shall_v have_v rest_n in_o the_o time_n of_o evil_n and_o
