therefore_o if_o in_o whatsoever_o we_o be_v or_o do_v we_o ascribe_v all_o to_o the_o mere_a goodness_n of_o god_n do_v all_o our_o work_n for_o we_o and_o crown_v all_o our_o work_n in_o we_o enable_v we_o to_o do_v above_o what_o we_o can_v desire_v or_o think_v and_o accept_v what_o we_o do_v above_o any_o ability_n or_o worth_n in_o and_o of_o ourselves_o hereby_o we_o may_v true_o evidence_n the_o measure_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n the_o more_o we_o can_v depend_v upon_o the_o absolute_a goodness_n of_o god_n and_o so_o may_v gracious_o improve_v and_o further_o our_o hasten_v on_o to_o perfection_n a_o four_o rule_n hereunto_o be_v that_o as_o there_o be_v diverse_a measure_n of_o glory_n so_o there_o be_v also_o diverse_a measure_n of_o grace_n suitable_a thereunto_o and_o yet_o each_o shall_v have_v sufficient_a to_o make_v up_o his_o particular_a measure_n and_o this_o according_a to_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n who_o give_v to_o each_o as_o it_o please_v he_o and_o this_o according_a to_o his_o unspeakable_a wisdom_n to_o reserve_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o mercy_n entire_o unto_o himself_o yet_o so_o as_o that_o 1_o in_o the_o diversity_n of_o measure_n each_o shall_v have_v sufficient_a to_o the_o end_n they_o be_v ordain_v 2_o each_o shall_v hereby_o be_v more_o serviceable_a to_o each_o other_o for_o the_o present_a common_a good_a and_o future_a main_a end_n even_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n 3_o and_o so_o each_o shall_v hereby_o provoke_v other_o more_o effectual_o in_o their_o several_a measure_n to_o their_o to_o be_v partaker_n of_o his_o fullness_n that_o god_n may_v be_v be_v all_o in_o all_o in_o us._n and_o hereunto_o serve_v a_o five_o rule_n that_o the_o spirit_n work_v free_o as_o in_o the_o manner_n so_o especial_o in_o the_o measure_n thereof_o that_o be_v whereas_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n be_v the_o only_a work_n of_o god_n power_n and_o goodness_n and_o that_o only_a for_o his_o this_o fall_v out_o in_o the_o great_a measure_n of_o our_o grow_v because_o now_o we_o shall_v be_v subject_a to_o more_o inward_a buffet_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n vain_a glory_n hypocrisy_n or_o the_o like_a to_o hinder_v our_o true_a judgement_n thereof_o or_o the_o further_a thrive_a therein_o and_o now_o we_o shall_v be_v more_o privy_a to_o the_o deceitfullnesse_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o power_n of_o corruption_n which_o without_o his_o special_a grace_n may_v distract_v and_o confound_v we_o in_o the_o same_o yea_o we_o shall_v want_v great_a opposition_n from_o without_o by_o slander_n persecution_n and_o to_o discourage_v and_o deject_v therein_o and_o therefore_o herein_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v appear_v more_o wise_o and_o glorious_o either_o suspending_a some_o operation_n thereof_o which_o may_v cause_v those_o spiritual_a end_n or_o leave_v we_o to_o some_o outward_a evil_n to_o purge_v out_o those_o that_o be_v inward_a and_o yet_o sustain_v we_o wonderful_o with_o secret_a evidence_n to_o control_v the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o satisfy_v we_o gracious_o against_o the_o challenge_n thereof_o and_o to_o comfort_v we_o also_o in_o the_o great_a sense_n of_o inward_a corruption_n yea_o mighty_o arm_v we_o with_o inward_a power_n to_o overcome_v all_o outward_a opposition_n and_o recompense_v the_o same_o glorious_o with_o more_o inward_a unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a joy_n and_o yet_o in_o all_o these_o work_a most_o free_o both_o concern_v the_o time_n and_o measure_n and_o mean_n as_o please_v he_o subdue_a corruption_n by_o such_o mean_n and_o in_o such_o manner_n as_o in_o all_o likelihood_n of_o flesh_n serve_v more_o to_o enrage_v and_o increase_v the_o same_o as_o by_o affliction_n desertion_n and_o such_o like_a yea_o wonderful_o turn_v about_o the_o sense_n and_o power_n of_o corruption_n not_o only_o to_o the_o weaken_v thereof_o but_o also_o to_o further_o we_o gracious_o to_o a_o great_a increase_n of_o grace_n from_o whence_o do_v arise_v these_o comfortable_a conclusion_n to_o discern_v the_o measure_n of_o grace_n and_o further_o we_o therein_o first_o that_o see_v discern_v the_o deceitfulness_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o perverseness_n of_o our_o thought_n the_o more_o light_a and_o grace_n we_o have_v receive_v yea_o the_o more_o we_o be_v abase_v and_o empty_v of_o all_o confidence_n in_o our_o own_o ability_n the_o more_o we_o be_v interest_v in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n the_o more_o we_o discern_v our_o fayling_n in_o the_o best_a and_o renounce_v our_o own_o righteousness_n the_o more_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o thereby_o shall_v be_v more_o enable_v to_o perfection_n second_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v perfect_v in_o infirmity_n therefore_o if_o in_o all_o our_o action_n we_o aim_v at_o god_n glory_n subbordinate_v our_o chief_a good_a thereunto_o and_o still_o deny_v ourselves_o and_o best_a righteousness_n that_o he_o only_o may_v be_v glorify_v in_o the_o beginning_n and_o lead_v forward_o of_o the_o work_n this_o be_v a_o gracious_a evidence_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o growth_n hereby_o we_o may_v reap_v find_v comfort_n in_o the_o great_a sense_n of_o our_o infirmity_n but_o of_o this_o more_o heretofore_o in_o that_o rule_n that_o we_o must_v live_v by_o shall_v be_v best_a for_o we_o therefore_o shall_v his_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o we_o to_o bear_v the_o brunt_n that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v overcome_v thereof_o and_o the_o same_o grace_n that_o sustain_v in_o the_o combat_n will_v enable_v we_o to_o such_o a_o conquest_n therein_o as_o that_o still_o we_o may_v hold_v of_o god_n free_a grace_n for_o our_o humiliation_n and_o wait_v upon_o the_o same_o for_o our_o present_a deliverance_n and_o hunger_n after_o the_o full_a measure_n thereof_o for_o our_o final_a deliverance_n out_o of_o all_o our_o trouble_n the_o last_o rule_n of_o god_n free_a grace_n so_o lead_v forward_o the_o same_o that_o as_o may_v serve_v to_o our_o main_a good_a even_o to_o attain_v the_o goal_n and_o also_o the_o main_a end_n even_o the_o glory_n of_o our_o god_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o be_v like_a to_o meet_v with_o many_o interruption_n of_o sin_n and_o affliction_n to_o hinder_v the_o work_n in_o regard_n of_o our_o own_o inward_a corruption_n and_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n and_o outward_a occasion_n work_v their_o part_n yet_o see_v the_o lord_n promise_v to_o perfect_v the_o work_n he_o have_v begin_v in_o we_o therefore_o will_v he_o herein_o especial_o make_v good_a his_o word_n to_o supply_v we_o with_o such_o outward_a mean_n as_o may_v further_o the_o same_o namely_o the_o continual_a operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n furnish_v â—s_n with_o all_o help_v hereunto_o by_o the_o power_n whereof_o even_o all_o outward_a and_o contrary_a mean_n shall_v be_v wonderful_o turn_v about_o to_o the_o best_a unto_o imperfection_n and_o stain_n of_o any_o goodness_n attain_v and_o the_o prevail_a of_o the_o flesh_n sometime_o in_o some_o degree_n over_o the_o spirit_n draw_v we_o contrary_a to_o our_o main_a purpose_n to_o many_o evil_n and_o yet_o further_a hereby_o our_o growth_n in_o nourish_v more_o necessary_a grace_n of_o humility_n and_o denial_n of_o ourselves_o of_o faith_n in_o christ_n contrary_a to_o sense_n of_o spiritual_a poverty_n and_o hunger_a after_o christ_n of_o holy_a thirst_v after_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o this_o afford_v also_o diverse_a gracious_a consequence_n for_o our_o better_a discern_v of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o first_o that_o we_o may_v not_o expect_v perfection_n at_o the_o first_o nay_o we_o must_v not_o be_v discourage_v though_o as_o the_o seed_n die_v and_o rot_v before_o it_o come_v up_o and_o yield_v fruit_n so_o it_o be_v with_o we_o even_o after_o the_o seed_n of_o grace_n be_v sow_v in_o we_o for_o this_o do_v tend_v to_o the_o more_o glorious_a trial_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o patience_n and_o to_o the_o great_a advancement_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n in_o sustain_v we_o in_o these_o kind_n of_o desertion_n of_o his_o wisdom_n and_o mercy_n in_o turn_v they_o about_o to_o the_o best_a unto_o us._n 2._o though_o we_o discern_v not_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n at_o the_o first_o no_o not_o for_o some_o time_n yet_o be_v the_o seed_n sow_v and_o will_v come_v up_o at_o length_n and_o he_o that_o believe_v make_v not_o haste_n isay_n 8._o three_o and_o last_o see_v the_o seed_n come_v up_o by_o contrary_n by_o die_v etc._n etc._n therefore_o as_o we_o must_v not_o be_v discourage_v in_o those_o particular_a blast_n and_o opposition_n those_o desertion_n and_o contradiction_n yet_o in_o god_n purpose_n and_o practice_v of_o his_o grace_n it_o be_v constant_a and_o eternal_a 2._o as_o the_o light_n shine_v more_o and_o more_o unto_o the_o perfect_a day_n so_o be_v it_o in_o shine_v always_o though_o not_o apparent_a in_o our_o horizon_n nay_o though_o the_o light_n be_v not_o discernible_a always_o in_o that_o measure_n yet_o as_o the_o withdraw_a of_o the_o light_n and_o heat_n of_o the_o sun_n be_v very_o necessary_a and_o useful_a lest_o it_o extreme_a heat_n always_o continue_v shall_v burn_v the_o earth_n so_o the_o absence_n of_o this_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o work_n prove_v very_o profitable_a to_o humble_a and_o try_v our_o faith_n to_o make_v it_o express_v itself_o in_o other_o more_o necessary_a fruit_n of_o patience_n repentance_n compassion_n etc._n etc._n yea_o as_o the_o sun_n when_o it_o set_v in_o one_o circumference_n yet_o it_o shine_v in_o another_o so_o that_o when_o it_o be_v night_n with_o we_o it_o be_v day_n with_o other_o and_o yet_o we_o and_o they_o make_v but_o one_o universe_n so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n though_o it_o be_v withdraw_v from_o one_o part_n yet_o it_o shine_v in_o another_o it_o fail_v in_o some_o grace_n be_v the_o mean_n to_o express_v it_o in_o other_o that_o be_v more_o necessary_a and_o therefore_o though_o it_o shine_v not_o in_o one_o climate_n yet_o it_o shine_v in_o another_o and_o so_o while_o it_o be_v absent_a from_o one_o part_n it_o supply_v elsewhere_o and_o so_o by_o this_o dispensation_n by_o time_n and_o degree_n illustrate_v the_o present_a or_o that_o we_o grow_v careless_a and_o formal_a in_o holy_a duty_n and_o so_o for_o the_o present_a want_n the_o comfort_n of_o they_o yet_o as_o the_o light_n shine_v more_o and_o more_o until_o the_o perfect_a day_n so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o new_a birth_n 4._o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v compare_v unto_o wind_n john_n 3.8_o now_o as_o the_o wind_n blow_v where_o it_o list_v and_o though_o we_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o yet_o we_o can_v discern_v whence_o it_o come_v and_o whither_o it_o go_v so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v always_o free_a in_o work_v and_o therefore_o neither_o can_v any_o goodness_n in_o we_o move_v the_o same_o to_o work_v otherwise_o then_o it_o please_v neither_o can_v the_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o our_o goodness_n and_o dispose_v the_o same_o as_o it_o please_v for_o it_o own_o sake_n therefore_o though_o the_o best_a we_o do_v be_v in_o great_a weakness_n yet_o may_v not_o this_o challenge_n the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n who_o show_v his_o power_n in_o our_o weakness_n and_o by_o our_o corruption_n raise_v daily_a matter_n to_o abase_v the_o flesh_n and_o reserve_v the_o glory_n entire_o unto_o god_n and_o thereby_o also_o provoke_v we_o daily_o to_o renew_v our_o strength_n in_o christ_n that_o in_o he_o we_o may_v grow_v up_o to_o perfection_n that_o so_o the_o work_n of_o exact_a well-doing_n by_o the_o strictness_n of_o the_o spiritual_a law_n and_o so_o cast_v upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n for_o acceptance_n and_o further_a growth_n this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o right_a manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n to_o see_v a_o necessity_n of_o christ_n in_o all_o our_o action_n both_o to_o begin_v and_o also_o to_o accept_v and_o perfect_v the_o same_o phil._n 2.13_o 2._o whereby_o as_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n we_o be_v now_o lead_v by_o that_o free-worker_n who_o be_v not_o tie_v to_o one_o mean_n or_o manner_n of_o work_v but_o as_o it_o please_v he_o work_v diverse_o and_o yet_o all_o spiritual_o therefore_o for_o the_o further_a trial_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n we_o must_v now_o compare_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n together_o not_o compare_v the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o way_n of_o the_o flesh_n nor_o measure_v the_o work_n of_o the_o one_o by_o the_o tentation_n and_o opposition_n of_o the_o other_o for_o so_o we_o shall_v be_v always_o to_o seek_v but_o wise_o compare_v the_o former_a work_n in_o our_o beginning_n of_o grace_n with_o the_o present_a operation_n in_o our_o proceed_n hitherto_o 2_o and_o the_o principal_a and_o necessary_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o accessary_a and_o subordinate_a that_o be_v such_o as_o simple_o concern_v our_o be_v in_o christ_n with_o such_o as_o tend_v to_o our_o well_o be_v and_o better_v or_o comfort_v therein_o 3_o the_o secret_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o heart_n cherish_v inward_a life_n to_o our_o own_o sense_n with_o those_o that_o break_v out_o to_o the_o express_v thereof_o to_o other_o 4_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o effect_n thereof_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n prevail_a against_o particular_a tentation_n with_o the_o desertion_n and_o withdraw_v thereof_o for_o the_o present_a measure_n of_o assistance_n and_o yet_o sustain_v to_o bear_v the_o burden_n and_o make_v advantage_n thereof_o 5_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o quicken_a and_o strengthen_v faith_n contrary_n to_o sensâ—â—â—_n and_o the_o work_n of_o the_o same_o spirit_n in_o express_v that_o power_n by_o ceiling_n and_o assurance_n and_o last_o the_o passive_a fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n enable_v we_o to_o suffer_v for_o christ_n with_o the_o active_a work_n thereof_o in_o do_v his_o will_n in_o a_o word_n if_o together_o with_o these_o we_o can_v compare_v the_o purpose_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o practice_n thereof_o and_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o same_o lay_v together_o both_o how_o far_o we_o be_v come_v thereto_o &_o what_o by_o faith_n we_o apprehend_v these_o if_o we_o can_v right_o discern_v and_o compare_v together_o we_o shall_v gain_v great_a light_n to_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n for_o hereby_o we_o shall_v discern_v it_o to_o be_v the_o mere_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o that_o it_o can_v be_v scan_v by_o no_o other_o but_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o though_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o pray_v or_o how_o we_o grow_v and_o increase_v in_o this_o or_o that_o grace_n yet_o see_v the_o spirit_n help_v our_o infirmity_n even_o above_o what_o we_o ask_v or_o think_v 3.21_o rom_n 8.26_o eph._n 3.21_o therefore_o we_o then_o most_o certain_o grow_v when_o we_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n above_o any_o ability_n in_o ourselves_o and_o yet_o may_v be_v to_o seek_v of_o the_o spirit_n when_o we_o have_v do_v our_o best_a for_o comfort_n and_o present_a issue_n and_o hereby_o also_o may_v we_o wise_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n that_o whereas_o we_o must_v compare_v and_o fit_v spiritual_a thing_n to_o spiritual_a thing_n as_o both_o hereby_o to_o discern_v for_o our_o self_n and_o express_v they_o for_o the_o information_n of_o other_o therefore_o hereby_o may_v we_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n first_o that_o it_o be_v begin_v and_o lead_v forward_o as_o by_o the_o spirit_n which_o only_o be_v able_a to_o effect_v the_o same_o and_o be_v special_o destinate_a and_o appropriate_v to_o this_o work_n as_o both_o illightning_n our_o understanding_n to_o conceive_v what_o natural_o we_o be_v ignorant_a of_o and_o also_o incline_v our_o affection_n to_o the_o embrace_v thereof_o to_o which_o they_o be_v natural_o averse_a so_o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v by_o it_o own_o mean_n even_o by_o the_o spiritual_a word_n as_o be_v ordain_v and_o only_o effectual_a hereunto_o therefore_o if_o as_o our_o beginning_n of_o grace_n have_v be_v from_o the_o word_n so_o we_o be_v lead_v forward_o by_o the_o power_n thereof_o in_o our_o proceed_n therein_o be_v able_a to_o deny_v all_o our_o action_n from_o this_o ground_n to_o square_v they_o all_o to_o this_o rule_n and_o to_o aim_v they_o all_o to_o the_o main_a end_n thereof_o hereby_o shall_v we_o wise_o discover_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n especial_o if_o we_o can_v discern_v the_o mystery_n of_o this_o word_n special_o labour_v the_o inward_a purge_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o for_o the_o effect_n thereof_o tolerate_v some_o outward_a fail_n though_o seem_o contrary_a to_o the_o strict_a rule_n thereof_o yet_o be_v subordinate_a to_o the_o main_a end_n to_o procure_v and_o try_v inward_a soundness_n do_v therefore_o fall_v in_o very_o fit_o therewith_o and_o further_v the_o same_o and_o in_o all_o these_o work_n so_o secret_o that_o neither_o can_v we_o at_o all_o time_n discern_v the_o same_o for_o the_o present_a neither_o at_o all_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o fathom_v the_o depth_n thereof_o no_o more_o than_o our_o own_o heart_n because_o both_o be_v still_o a_o mystery_n by_o these_o consideration_n may_v we_o comfortable_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n as_o that_o first_o we_o discern_v as_o a_o special_a work_n of_o the_o word_n in_o convince_a our_o heart_n of_o sin_n and_o subdue_a and_o incline_v the_o same_o to_o hunger_n after_o christ_n
and_o rest_n in_o he_o though_o yet_o we_o find_v little_a conformity_n to_o he_o in_o our_o life_n because_o the_o seed_n must_v first_o be_v sow_v inward_o in_o the_o heart_n &_o there_o even_o râ—t_a and_o die_v as_o it_o be_v to_o our_o appearance_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o strange_a work_n thereof_o therein_o confound_v and_o cast_v the_o same_o out_o of_o itself_o so_o we_o find_v also_o our_o proceed_n in_o this_o spiritual_a life_n rather_o by_o the_o inward_a motion_n of_o the_o heart_n desirous_a to_o do_v what_o it_o can_v then_o express_v any_o thorough_a ability_n answerable_a to_o it_o desire_v to_o the_o practice_n thereof_o yea_o though_o it_o many_o time_n do_v the_o contrary_a yet_o see_v the_o spirit_n and_o word_n work_v by_o contrary_n even_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n yet_o we_o find_v this_o contrary_a work_n in_o leave_v we_o to_o some_o particular_a evil_n to_o sort_n with_o and_o further_o the_o main_a end_n even_o to_o cause_v more_o inward_a abase_v of_o the_o heart_n and_o quicken_a thereof_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o gracious_a rule_n to_o discern_v this_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n yea_o though_o we_o be_v many_o time_n to_o seek_v of_o the_o inward_a bent_n of_o our_o heart_n yet_o as_o hereby_o we_o be_v more_o humble_v in_o ourselves_o and_o so_o send_v to_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o son_n of_o god_n so_o may_v we_o hereby_o also_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n that_o sometime_o it_o be_v insensible_a to_o our_o spirit_n howsoever_o discernible_a by_o the_o spirit_n which_o search_v all_o thing_n yea_o sometime_o must_v be_v discern_v by_o contrary_n that_o still_o we_o may_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n and_o see_v the_o word_n though_o it_o work_v diverse_o yet_o most_o wise_o to_o further_a the_o main_a end_n and_o to_o avouch_v the_o freedom_n of_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o also_o by_o this_o diversity_n of_o work_v may_v we_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o so_o still_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o our_o discern_v thereof_o and_o proceed_v therein_o for_o our_o better_a satisfaction_n in_o this_o point_n both_o to_o discern_v more_o clear_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o also_o to_o apprehend_v it_o more_o comfortable_o by_o this_o rule_n of_o compare_v spiritual_a thing_n with_o spiritual_a have_v we_o also_o in_o readiness_n these_o special_a caveat_n and_o direction_n 1._o caveat_n first_o that_o we_o measure_v not_o simple_o our_o estate_n in_o christ_n by_o any_o present_a measure_n of_o grace_n we_o have_v receive_v that_o be_v though_o the_o least_o grace_n in_o we_o in_o truth_n be_v a_o evidence_n of_o our_o engraft_v into_o christ_n yet_o see_v our_o measure_n here_o at_o the_o best_a be_v imperfect_a yea_o sometime_o such_o as_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o discern_v or_o right_o judge_v of_o and_o so_o our_o interest_n in_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v perfect_a so_o it_o be_v also_o a_o deep_a mystery_n such_o as_o our_o shallow_a knowledge_n can_v fathom_v therefore_o our_o imperfect_a and_o short_a mete-wand_n can_v no_o way_n fit_o fathom_v so_o great_a a_o depth_n only_o herein_o be_v our_o comfort_n that_o as_o our_o acceptance_n in_o christ_n make_v we_o gracious_a by_o some_o measure_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n with_o he_o so_o our_o conformity_n hereby_o to_o his_o image_n shall_v own_v we_o unto_o he_o howsoever_o it_o may_v be_v short_a of_o the_o perfect_a pattern_n a_o 2._o caveat_n herein_o be_v that_o see_v there_o be_v diverse_a kind_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n some_o original_n and_o simple_o necessary_a to_o life_n as_o faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n other_o consequent_a and_o further_a the_o comfort_n and_o beauty_n thereof_o as_o full_a assurance_n joy_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o we_o must_v not_o measure_v our_o grow_n in_o grace_n by_o these_o late_a which_o be_v not_o always_o visible_a nor_o simple_o necessary_a but_o by_o the_o former_a but_o of_o this_o more_o full_o god_n will_v in_o the_o case_n a_o three_o rule_n of_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n be_v according_a to_o those_o several_a calling_n wherein_o god_n have_v place_v we_o that_o so_o we_o may_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o due_a season_n that_o be_v whereas_o every_o christian_a have_v two_o calling_n first_o his_o general_n call_v to_o the_o faith_n as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n of_o christ_n and_o second_o his_o particular_a call_n for_o the_o public_a and_o private_a good_a as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n thereof_o both_o these_o as_o they_o be_v limit_v in_o themselves_o so_o also_o be_v they_o limit_v and_o subordinate_a to_o each_o other_o i_o say_v first_o they_o be_v limit_v in_o themselves_o as_o that_o the_o general_n call_v of_o each_o christian_a be_v first_o limit_v to_o the_o place_n and_o ranke_n he_o enjoy_v in_o the_o church_n wherein_o he_o be_v either_o a_o public_a parson_n to_o teach_v other_o and_o so_o also_o be_v limit_v to_o those_o degree_n of_o priority_n and_o order_n which_o god_n have_v there_o place_v ephes_n 4.6_o 7_o 8._o rom._n 12._o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o prophet_n may_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o prophet_n that_o confusion_n may_v be_v avoid_v and_o unity_n preserve_v as_o some_o to_o rule_v and_o some_o to_o teach_v some_o for_o doctrine_n and_o some_o for_o discipline_n some_o for_o exhortation_n and_o some_o for_o relief_n etc._n etc._n or_o else_o he_o be_v a_o private_a person_n fit_a only_a to_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o public_a and_o not_o to_o teach_v and_o yet_o not_o debar_v from_o teach_v his_o family_n in_o private_a the_o fear_n of_o god_n 11._o 1._o cor._n 11._o genes_n 18._o and_o both_o these_o limit_v by_o the_o several_a gift_n bestow_v on_o they_o the_o lord_n require_v no_o more_o than_o he_o give_v and_o limit_v as_o also_o in_o some_o sort_n measure_v by_o the_o opportunity_n and_o success_n therein_o and_o so_o also_o the_o civil_a call_n have_v it_o bound_n in_o itself_o both_o according_a to_o the_o different_a degree_n and_o rank_n of_o man_n the_o wise_a lord_n have_v dispose_v in_o the_o world_n as_o some_o to_o rule_v and_o some_o to_o obey_v as_o also_o answerable_a to_o the_o diverse_a gift_n and_o use_n of_o man_n in_o the_o commonwealth_n according_a to_o which_o they_o be_v restrain_v from_o intermeddle_v with_o other_o calling_n and_o so_o also_o according_a to_o their_o ability_n in_o such_o calling_n that_o none_o may_v presume_v above_o what_o be_v meet_v yea_o ordain_v and_o dispose_v of_o these_o fayling_n for_o the_o further_o abase_v and_o confound_v of_o the_o flesh_n and_o as_o it_o necessary_o fall_v out_o that_o be_v leave_v unto_o ourselves_o we_o where_o he_o seem_v to_o have_v utter_o forsake_v we_o and_o contrary_a to_o our_o expectation_n relieve_n we_o by_o his_o mercy_n though_o not_o according_a to_o our_o apprehension_n and_o desire_v in_o the_o particular_a yet_o answerable_a to_o his_o most_o gracious_a wisdom_n in_o reserve_v the_o glory_n thereof_o entire_o to_o himself_o and_o also_o answerable_a to_o our_o main_a desire_n to_o fit_v we_o for_o he_o and_o provoke_v we_o to_o hunger_n after_o he_o and_o therefore_o though_o we_o may_v not_o challenge_v our_o god_n for_o leave_v we_o to_o ourselves_o see_v it_o be_v our_o corruption_n that_o immediate_o and_o direct_o cause_v our_o fall_n so_o much_o less_o have_v we_o any_o just_a occasion_n to_o condemn_v his_o mercy_n in_o leave_v we_o to_o ourselves_o see_v he_o do_v so_o only_o leave_v we_o as_o that_o still_o he_o uphold_v we_o by_o his_o power_n and_o will_v no_o further_o leave_v we_o but_o that_o still_o he_o keep_v we_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o his_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o thereby_o confirm_v unto_o we_o the_o faithfulness_n of_o our_o god_n who_o will_v perfect_v the_o work_n which_o he_o have_v begin_v in_o we_o that_o he_o of_o such_o infirmity_n as_o we_o carry_v about_o we_o and_o provoke_v we_o to_o a_o great_a watchfulness_n over_o they_o and_o to_o a_o more_o earnest_a desire_n to_o put_v off_o this_o body_n of_o thereof_o by_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o assurance_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o spirit_n from_o the_o same_o yet_o lest_o we_o shall_v imagine_v the_o spirit_n tie_v only_o to_o this_o effect_n or_o that_o we_o deserve_v the_o same_o out_o of_o the_o worth_n of_o our_o well-doing_n and_o so_o encroach_v upon_o the_o worthiness_n of_o our_o head_n therefore_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v not_o see_v full_o for_o that_o remain_v for_o another_o life_n some_o notice_n we_o shall_v have_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o work_v though_o we_o can_v full_o discern_v the_o mystery_n thereof_o and_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o some_o such_o feel_n thereof_o we_o shall_v have_v as_o may_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o vain_a though_o we_o may_v want_v of_o such_o evidence_n which_o may_v evince_v the_o perfection_n of_o grace_n as_o be_v most_o fit_a for_o this_o state_n of_o grow_v our_o faith_n shall_v be_v mingle_v with_o some_o doubt_v our_o grace_n with_o some_o mixture_n of_o corruption_n that_o as_o we_o may_v discern_v the_o truth_n thereof_o so_o we_o may_v also_o discern_v the_o imperfection_n of_o the_o same_o that_o so_o we_o may_v daily_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n by_o daily_o deny_v of_o ourselves_o and_o labour_v to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n not_o have_v our_o own_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o we_o have_v not_o the_o perfect_a sight_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n neither_o enjoy_v sensible_a comfort_n in_o the_o same_o at_o all_o time_n alike_o yet_o be_v this_o so_o far_o from_o challenge_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o we_o as_o that_o rather_o it_o do_v evidence_n undoubted_o the_o power_n thereof_o see_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o combat_n between_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n there_o must_v necessary_o fall_v out_o such_o difference_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o also_o of_o our_o apprehension_n thereof_o whereas_o if_o it_o be_v always_o in_o one_o key_n and_o temper_n it_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o combat_n and_o so_o no_o true_a conversion_n only_o here_o let_v it_o suffice_v we_o that_o our_o god_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o will_v work_v as_o it_o please_v he_o that_o his_o grace_n may_v still_o be_v free_a and_o if_o ever_o we_o have_v any_o true_a feel_n of_o the_o work_n it_o be_v a_o evidence_n that_o we_o shall_v have_v it_o again_o or_o else_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v better_o for_o we_o know_v that_o here_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sight_n 2._o cor._n 5.7_o and_o that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n must_v be_v perfect_v in_o our_o weakness_n 2._o cor._n 12.8_o remember_v now_o what_o be_v add_v in_o the_o three_o place_n as_o a_o lively_a evidence_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o we_o know_v not_o whence_o it_o come_v nor_o whether_o it_o go_v therein_o give_v we_o to_o understand_v do_v live_v by_o faith_n both_o in_o discern_v whereunto_o we_o be_v come_v and_o whither_o we_o may_v go_v in_o general_a yet_o see_v we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n 13.9_o 1._o cor._n 13.9_o and_o grace_n to_o this_o end_n consider_v we_o further_o that_o our_o new_a birth_n and_o growth_n in_o grace_n be_v compare_v to_o a_o combat_n express_v therein_o as_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o growth_n which_o be_v by_o a_o continual_a bicker_n and_o contention_n between_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o flesh_n so_o thereby_o also_o give_v we_o some_o direction_n how_o to_o discern_v the_o manner_n thereof_o even_o by_o a_o continual_a fight_n and_o wrestle_v within_o we_o whence_o arise_v these_o conclusion_n that_o as_o the_o spirit_n prevail_v two_o way_n either_o by_o strengthen_v we_o to_o overcome_v the_o present_a tentation_n or_o else_o by_o leave_v we_o to_o the_o particular_a tentation_n for_o the_o present_a thereby_o either_o to_o arm_v we_o better_o against_o the_o same_o hereafter_o that_o so_o we_o may_v after_o a_o foil_n attain_v a_o more_o glorious_a victory_n or_o though_o it_o leave_v we_o to_o be_v foil_v by_o the_o particular_a tentation_n yet_o it_o do_v by_o into_o each_o part_n whereby_o the_o flesh_n be_v not_o only_o renew_v as_o a_o young_a child_n but_o also_o enlarge_v and_o extend_v to_o further_a growth_n herein_o special_a comfort_n herein_o more_o particular_o hence_o ensue_v many_o special_a cordial_n in_o some_o such_o main_a and_o desperate_a extremity_n which_o do_v most_o appall_v and_o deject_v afflict_a spirit_n as_o sin_n 1._o in_o spiritual_a desertion_n of_o sin_n first_o in_o the_o case_n of_o spiritual_a desertion_n and_o that_o either_o when_o the_o lord_n leave_v we_o to_o be_v overtake_v with_o some_o gross_a or_o fret_a sin_n which_o howsoever_o it_o may_v seem_v to_o challenge_v we_o of_o quench_v the_o spirit_n that_o so_o all_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v lose_v yet_o since_o this_o may_v fall_v out_o rather_o through_o our_o own_o negligence_n rather_o than_o wilfulness_n and_o rather_o by_o the_o violence_n of_o tentation_n than_o our_o own_o purpose_n and_o delight_v therein_o howsoever_o we_o may_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n by_o our_o carelessness_n and_o scandal_n follow_v thereupon_o and_o so_o deprive_v ourselves_o of_o the_o comfort_n thereof_o which_o now_o be_v not_o
seasonable_a lest_o it_o may_v harden_v in_o sin_n yet_o shall_v we_o find_v such_o a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o may_v convince_v for_o sin_n and_o provoke_v just_a revenge_n for_o the_o same_o which_o shall_v now_o yield_v seasonable_a joy_n for_o the_o master_v of_o such_o a_o enemy_n and_o so_o enable_v to_o walk_v more_o wary_o against_o future_a encounter_n and_o more_o tender_o and_o wise_o also_o in_o judge_v and_o recover_v other_o so_o gracious_a be_v the_o lord_n to_o bring_v light_a out_o of_o darkness_n that_o though_o by_o our_o carelessness_n we_o have_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o be_v bereave_v of_o that_o assistance_n as_o may_v keep_v we_o from_o some_o such_o grievous_a sin_n which_o may_v awaken_v out_o of_o security_n yet_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o sin_n procure_v hearty_a sorrow_n and_o judge_v thereof_o shall_v thereby_o prove_v the_o mean_n to_o subdue_v the_o same_o and_o this_o mastery_n of_o corruption_n though_o it_o be_v bitter_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o so_o may_v be_v cause_n of_o further_a sorrow_n yet_o withal_o it_o shall_v prove_v most_o comfortable_a to_o the_o spirit_n as_o have_v quiet_v the_o conscience_n gracious_o hereby_o and_o so_o recover_v boldness_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o so_o in_o his_o favour_n we_o may_v recover_v that_o unspeakable_a joy_n which_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o us._n the_o like_a may_v be_v apply_v in_o that_o other_o fearful_a case_n of_o relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n again_o sin_n 2._o comfort_n in_o relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n which_o see_v it_o have_v be_v the_o lot_n of_o the_o dear_a servant_n of_o god_n that_o moses_n shall_v fail_v again_o in_o infidelity_n and_o abraham_n lie_v again_o concern_v his_o wife_n therefore_o as_o notwithstanding_o these_o sin_n they_o recover_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n so_o may_v we_o also_o hope_v for_o the_o like_a mercy_n though_o we_o fall_v again_o into_o the_o same_o infirmity_n for_o the_o more_o he_o forgive_v shall_v we_o not_o hereby_o prove_v more_o comfortable_a example_n to_o raise_v up_o great_a sinner_n shall_v we_o not_o have_v better_a experience_n to_o accomplish_v the_o same_o a_o second_o desertion_n follow_v upon_o the_o former_a namely_o correction_n 3._o comfort_n in_o desertion_n of_o correction_n that_o by_o reason_n of_o such_o grievous_a sin_n the_o lord_n withdraw_v himself_o from_o we_o as_o a_o chastisement_n thereof_o and_o so_o we_o be_v overtake_v not_o only_o with_o outward_a affliction_n that_o may_v bring_v we_o to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n but_o also_o with_o inward_a anguish_n and_o horror_n of_o spirit_n to_o scourge_v we_o sound_o for_o the_o same_o which_o though_o it_o prove_v a_o occasion_n to_o challenge_v our_o estate_n as_o be_v forsake_v of_o god_n and_o so_o many_o time_n plunge_v into_o the_o very_a jaw_n of_o despair_n yet_o why_o may_v not_o this_o prove_v sovereign_a and_o profitable_a unto_o we_o as_o well_o as_o physic_n compound_v even_o of_o poison_n recover_v desperate_a disease_n be_v not_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n more_o admirable_a herein_o to_o cure_v contrary_n by_o contrary_n be_v shall_v be_v so_o far_o satisfy_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o so_o to_o be_v thankful_a for_o any_o work_n we_o find_v though_o it_o answer_v not_o the_o mean_n or_o our_o expectation_n for_o the_o present_a as_o still_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o what_o we_o discern_v not_o or_o what_o we_o do_v discern_v not_o correspondent_a thereto_o and_o so_o still_o to_o hunger_n after_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n by_o who_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v both_o in_o the_o present_a measure_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v accept_v in_o the_o covenant_n and_o so_o enable_v thereby_o to_o a_o daily_o further_a measure_n that_o so_o at_o length_n we_o may_v attain_v to_o perfection_n and_o this_o both_o by_o compare_v what_o be_v pass_v with_o what_o be_v present_a that_o so_o we_o may_v discern_v whereto_o we_o be_v come_v and_o by_o thankfulness_n make_v way_n for_o further_a supply_n as_o also_o by_o thing_n past_a and_o present_a look_v to_o what_o be_v to_o come_v that_o so_o we_o may_v not_o stick_v in_o any_o measure_n receive_v but_o rather_o hasten_v
to_o that_o which_o be_v before_o 3.13_o phil._n 3.13_o and_o that_o still_o look_v to_o jesus_n the_o author_n and_o finisher_n of_o our_o faith_n that_o so_o we_o may_v endeavour_v to_o perfect_a holiness_n thus_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n in_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o this_o will_v afford_v we_o many_o comfortable_a conclusion_n to_o settle_v we_o against_o diverse_a tentation_n which_o be_v incident_a hereto_o as_o first_o whereas_o it_o much_o distract_v the_o saint_n that_o because_o they_o can_v sensible_o discern_v for_o the_o present_a the_o maâ—ner_n of_o their_o spiritual_a growth_n no_o more_o than_o they_o can_v their_o natural_a therefore_o they_o question_v ofttimes_o the_o truth_n thereof_o if_o now_o they_o shall_v know_v that_o in_o the_o discern_a thereof_o they_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n this_o distraction_n will_v easy_o be_v remedy_v for_o now_o see_v that_o may_v be_v believe_v by_o faith_n which_o be_v not_o apprehend_v nay_o be_v contrary_a to_o sense_n therefore_o though_o our_o grow_a be_v not_o discernible_a to_o sense_n nay_o sense_n apprehend_v somewhat_o that_o may_v be_v contrary_a to_o our_o growth_n therefore_o notwithstanding_o these_o we_o may_v still_o grow_v in_o grace_n nay_o see_v we_o grow_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n therefore_o be_v this_o unto_o we_o a_o true_a evidence_n that_o we_o do_v grow_v indeed_o when_o we_o do_v not_o sensible_o discern_v it_o for_o the_o present_a when_o we_o find_v somewhat_o in_o appearance_n &_o opposition_n that_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o so_o do_v hereby_o fight_v the_o good_a fight_n of_o faith_n 2._o whereas_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n be_v not_o only_o to_o have_v some_o feel_n of_o what_o we_o believe_v by_o the_o seal_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o general_a as_o that_o thereby_o we_o be_v persuade_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n in_o we_o but_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n be_v further_a to_o rely_v upon_o the_o free_a power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n above_o what_o present_o we_o feel_v 18._o rom._n 4.17_o 18._o lest_o our_o present_a feeling_n cause_v spiritual_a pride_n and_o perseverance_n therein_o yea_o faith_n 11.1_o heb._n 11.1_o which_o be_v of_o thing_n not_o see_v will_v enable_v we_o to_o see_v a_o far_o off_o into_o that_o great_a reward_n 11.26_o heb._n 11.26_o also_o the_o same_o that_o this_o be_v best_a for_o we_o though_o for_o the_o present_a we_o can_v discern_v it_o through_o impatience_n pride_n or_o such_o like_a yea_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n will_v dispel_v these_o fog_n and_o make_v manifest_a to_o the_o advise_a spirit_n what_o may_v be_v best_a for_o it_o yea_o herein_o also_o appear_v the_o wonderful_a virtue_n of_o faith_n that_o it_o will_v keep_v the_o work_n a_o foot_n more_o earnest_o the_o more_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v cross_v &_o continue_v the_o same_o more_o eager_o in_o hope_n at_o length_n to_o prevail_v and_o never_o undoubted_o obtain_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o if_o not_o the_o particular_a for_o the_o present_a yet_o what_o meanwhile_o shall_v be_v better_o and_o the_o particular_a if_o necessary_a in_o the_o time_n most_o convenient_a only_o let_v we_o pray_v in_o faith_n 1.6_o jam._n 1.6_o and_o so_o wait_v with_o patience_n apprehend_v he_o which_o be_v invisible_a and_o in_o he_o the_o glory_n grace_n yet_o if_o we_o labour_v not_o to_o be_v destitute_a of_o any_o necessary_a grace_n that_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o the_o present_a occasion_n and_o so_o find_v more_o ability_n and_o delight_n in_o the_o practice_n thereof_o abound_v therein_o with_o thankfulness_n and_o constancy_n find_v less_o tediousness_n and_o interruption_n therein_o and_o still_o endeavour_v the_o increase_n and_o yet_o shall_v these_o tend_v to_o the_o perfection_n of_o god_n glory_n and_o so_o to_o the_o enable_v we_o to_o bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n 2_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n avayle_v hereto_o not_o
