â—east_n into_o the_o way_n and_o path_n of_o holiness_n and_o be_v come_v unto_o a_o true_a and_o sound_a beginning_n be_v come_v unto_o chriâ—t_n who_o be_v the_o beginning_n and_o the_o end_n both_o the_o alpha_n and_o the_o omega_n the_o way_n the_o truth_n and_o the_o life_n the_o door_n into_o the_o sheep-fold_n and_o house_n of_o god_n so_o have_v enter_v by_o he_o thou_o be_v no_o intruder_n no_o thief_n nor_o robber_n but_o a_o true_a servant_n of_o the_o house_n of_o god_n wherein_o thou_o be_v to_o work_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o have_v receive_v christ_n so_o must_v bring_v forth_o other_o sort_n of_o fruit_n than_o former_o even_o good_a fruit_n and_o that_o in_o abundance_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o common_a tree_n in_o the_o outward_a for_o they_o do_v not_o change_v the_o graft_n imp_v on_o they_o into_o their_o own_o nature_n but_o rather_o the_o imp_n change_v the_o sap_n and_o virtue_n of_o spirit_n of_o the_o tree_n that_o it_o cause_v the_o tree_n to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n according_a to_o the_o kind_n of_o the_o graft_n itself_o but_o it_o be_v otherwise_o betwixt_o châ—ist_n and_o we_o man_n for_o we_o be_v plant_v or_o graft_v into_o he_o he_o change_v the_o nature_n of_o our_o fruit_n from_o evil_a to_o good_a otherwise_o the_o comparison_n hold_v very_o well_o now_o when_o the_o graft_n be_v cut_v off_o from_o its_o natural_a stock_n it_o be_v very_o gâ—â—en_v and_o full_a of_o life_n yea_o suppose_v it_o be_v full_a of_o blossom_n or_o fruit_n yet_o when_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o infuse_v and_o insinuate_v itself_o into_o it_o by_o which_o it_o unit_v and_o knit_v the_o graft_n to_o the_o tree_n by_o a_o natural_a union_n and_o then_o in_o process_n of_o time_n the_o graft_n begin_v to_o green_a and_o flourish_v again_o and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n both_o much_o better_a and_o more_o abundant_a as_o be_v say_v and_o here_o we_o may_v observe_v somewhat_o of_o all_o these_o step_n in_o a_o similitude_n which_o the_o graft_n pass_v through_o before_o it_o come_v to_o bear_v fruit_n as_o 1._o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n in_o the_o tree_n insinuate_v it_o self_n into_o the_o graft_n take_v hold_v of_o the_o faint_a and_o dead_a power_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o graft_n and_o convert_v or_o turn_v they_o into_o itself_o 2._o the_o graft_n be_v thus_o turn_v or_o join_v to_o the_o tree_n not_o by_o any_o outward_a bond_n but_o by_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o tree_n continue_v and_o persist_v therein_o which_o if_o it_o do_v not_o it_o can_v not_o receive_v life_n from_o the_o tree_n 3._o in_o this_o continuance_n it_o remain_v very_o passive_a do_v nothing_o but_o secret_o drink_v in_o the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o life_n from_o the_o tree_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o so_o by_o this_o mean_v it_o become_v in_o due_a time_n as_o a_o natural_a branch_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o bring_v forth_o its_o fruit_n as_o aforesaid_a now_o such_o be_v the_o discretion_n of_o the_o husband_n man_n that_o he_o require_v not_o present_a fruit_n from_o the_o tree_n neither_o be_v he_o offend_v with_o it_o that_o it_o yield_v not_o present_a fruit_n but_o patient_o wait_v for_o the_o fruit_n in_o the_o season_n of_o it_o even_o such_o be_v the_o discretion_n of_o the_o lord_n yea_o and_o much_o more_o towards_o man_n that_o if_o they_o convert_v and_o turn_v into_o the_o true_a vine_n and_o tree_n of_o life_n not_o resist_v the_o power_n of_o life_n therein_o but_o suffer_v it_o to_o work_v in_o they_o to_o kill_v the_o unholy_a life_n by_o which_o they_o live_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o sin_n and_o if_o they_o continue_v thus_o convert_v in_o a_o passive_a and_o forbear_v way_n suffer_v the_o spirit_n and_o power_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n in_o they_o to_o do_v in_o it_o what_o he_o please_v this_o be_v acceptable_a unto_o the_o lord_n even_o thus_o to_o die_v in_o he_o and_o bless_v lord_n he_o be_v to_o reflect_v upon_o himself_o and_o to_o enter_v upon_o a_o impartial_a examination_n and_o trial_n of_o his_o own_o soul_n whether_o he_o have_v pass_v true_o through_o the_o aforesaid_a step_n of_o conversion_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n and_o so_o whether_o he_o have_v attain_v unto_o any_o true_a beginning_n of_o the_o divine_a and_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o that_o before_o he_o enter_v upon_o other_o operative_a exercise_n because_o that_o unless_o in_o some_o measure_n he_o have_v true_o pass_v through_o these_o step_n he_o can_v perform_v any_o work_n right_o and_o acceptable_o unto_o god_n and_o this_o examination_n and_o reflection_n be_v the_o more_o needful_a for_o that_o even_o these_o step_n may_v be_v counterfeit_v no_o less_o than_o other_o thing_n a_o soul_n may_v even_o seem_v to_o itself_o to_o have_v convert_v or_o turn_v itself_o inward_o unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o not_o have_v true_o convert_v thereunto_o yea_o i_o will_v say_v a_o great_a word_n but_o that_o which_o be_v a_o very_a certain_a truth_n many_o do_v inward_o convert_v as_o unto_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o to_o the_o true_a god_n but_o a_o false_a even_o a_o image_n of_o their_o own_o frame_n and_o devise_v and_o as_o unto_o christ_n but_o indeed_o it_o be_v unto_o antichrist_n and_o sure_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o very_a beginning_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o iniquity_n when_o satan_n put_v on_o the_o appearance_n of_o god_n and_o antichrist_n of_o christ_n sit_v down_o in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n and_o be_v axalt_v above_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v call_v god_n now_o to_o open_v this_o a_o little_a more_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o all_o man_n have_v some_o notion_n or_o image_n of_o god_n in_o their_o mind_n by_o which_o when_o they_o speak_v hear_v or_o read_v of_o he_o they_o some_o way_n think_v and_o form_v their_o thought_n and_o conception_n of_o he_o according_a to_o that_o objective_a notion_n or_o idea_n with_o which_o they_o be_v acquaint_v now_o though_o it_o be_v also_o certain_a that_o there_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n a_o true_a objective_n concept_n or_o idea_n of_o god_n put_v or_o plant_v by_o god_n himself_o in_o every_o man_n mind_n which_o be_v in_o and_o of_o the_o divine_a seed_n sow_v in_o every_o man_n yet_o the_o usual_a knowledge_n that_o man_n common_o have_v of_o god_n do_v not_o proceed_v from_o this_o true_a idea_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n nor_o be_v it_o the_o pattern_n or_o example_n according_a to_o which_o they_o usual_o frame_v the_o thought_n and_o conception_n of_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o usual_o speak_v read_v hear_v or_o consider_v of_o he_o in_o their_o mind_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o divine_a seed_n in_o and_o through_o which_o the_o true_a idea_n be_v receive_v in_o most_o man_n yea_o in_o all_o wicked_a man_n and_o unconvert_v be_v great_o burden_a and_o oppress_v through_o the_o lust_n and_o iniquity_n which_o prevail_v in_o they_o whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o frequent_o that_o true_a object_n concept_n or_o idea_n or_o manifestation_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n which_o in_o scripture_n be_v call_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d i._o e._n that_o which_o may_v be_v know_v of_o god_n be_v veil_v and_o cloud_v in_o they_o so_o that_o the_o soul_n do_v no_o more_o apprehend_v it_o then_o if_o it_o be_v not_o and_o when_o by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o visitation_n upon_o the_o soul_n this_o objective_a concept_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v bring_v into_o some_o measure_n of_o manifestation_n yet_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o intent_o take_v up_o with_o its_o sinful_a lust_n and_o pleasure_n that_o it_o do_v little_o observe_v it_o and_o many_o time_n not_o at_o all_o even_o as_o if_o some_o friend_n pass_v by_o before_o i_o in_o my_o view_n yet_o i_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o look_v at_o some_o other_o person_n or_o thing_n shall_v know_v nothing_o of_o his_o be_v so_o near_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v even_o so_o as_o to_o this_o matter_n the_o lord_n do_v often_o visit_v the_o but_o the_o more_o abundant_a fruit_n it_o bring_v forth_o this_o month_n or_o year_n the_o yet_o more_o abundant_o it_o bring_v forth_o the_o next_o yea_o its_o life_n be_v so_o much_o in_o work_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n that_o if_o it_o be_v hinder_v in_o its_o moving_n and_o work_n it_o die_v even_o as_o the_o fire_n go_v out_o if_o it_o be_v stop_v from_o burn_a and_o the_o water_n die_v if_o it_o be_v keep_v from_o run_v beside_o the_o lord_n be_v so_o well_o please_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v diligent_a in_o good_a work_n through_o his_o own_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n that_o he_o do_v reward_v it_o with_o a_o further_a measure_n and_o take_v delight_n to_o water_v the_o soul_n that_o be_v fruitful_a therein_o the_o more_o abundant_o with_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n and_o spirit_n even_o as_o the_o husbandman_n do_v his_o garden_n which_o yield_v he_o good_a fruit_n but_o the_o vine-yard_n which_o bring_v not_o forth_o good_a grape_n but_o the_o sour_a and_o that_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o attain_v unto_o the_o first_o beginning_n or_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a life_n through_o faith_n and_o believe_v unto_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n 1._o receptive_a or_o receive_v 2._o operative_a or_o work_v now_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o attain_v unto_o the_o begin_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n through_o the_o property_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v opperative_a but_o through_o that_o which_o be_v receptive_a and_o lest_o any_o shall_v think_v this_o distinction_n too_o nice_a or_o subtle_a i_o shall_v prove_v it_o from_o the_o express_a word_n of_o scripture_n 1._o that_o faith_n be_v operative_a be_v clear_a from_o that_o scripture_n where_o it_o be_v say_v faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o where_o it_o be_v say_v to_o purify_v the_o heart_n and_o do_v a_o great_a many_o good_a thing_n in_o many_o other_o place_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v receptive_a i_o shall_v go_v no_o further_o then_o joh._n 1.12_o for_o proof_n to_o as_o many_o as_o receive_v he_o to_o they_o give_v he_o power_n to_o become_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o that_o this_o receive_v christ_n be_v a_o believe_v in_o he_o be_v plain_a from_o the_o word_n immediate_o follow_v even_o say_v he_o to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n so_o here_o be_v the_o receptive_a faith_n for_o receptive_a be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v in_o english_a receive_v nor_o be_v there_o many_o example_n want_v in_o natural_a thing_n to_o show_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v the_o receptive_a power_n when_o as_o yet_o it_o have_v not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o 1._o the_o needle_n of_o the_o compass_n must_v first_o receive_v its_o virtue_n from_o the_o load_n stone_n be_v touch_v with_o it_o before_o it_o can_v direct_v itself_o towards_o the_o pole_n 2._o the_o branch_n that_o be_v cutoff_a from_o its_o own_o natural_a stock_n and_o graft_v into_o another_o it_o first_o receive_v life_n and_o virtue_n from_o the_o stock_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o drink_v it_o in_o before_o it_o proceed_v to_o send_v forth_o either_o leaf_n or_o flourish_n or_o fruit_n 3._o the_o womb_n first_o receive_v seed_n before_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n in_o it_o proceed_v in_o their_o operation_n for_o its_o conception_n and_o formation_n 4._o the_o stomach_n first_o receive_v the_o meat_n into_o it_o before_o by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n therein_o it_o digest_v and_o turn_v it_o into_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n and_o indeed_o this_o last_o example_n do_v with_o great_a clearness_n hold_v forth_o the_o thing_n in_o hand_n for_o suppose_v now_o a_o man_n through_o hunger_n be_v even_o faint_a and_o as_o it_o be_v dead_a so_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o yet_o receive_v a_o little_a food_n the_o virtue_n of_o it_o do_v sudden_o revive_v he_o and_o give_v he_o natural_a strength_n whereby_o he_o may_v do_v and_o work_v as_o former_o and_o thus_o the_o soul_n receive_v and_o drink_v in_o that_o divine_a virtue_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o the_o divine_a seed_n be_v thereby_o quicken_v and_o strengthen_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o pertain_v unto_o a_o holy_a life_n in_o some_o measure_n all_o which_o example_n and_o many_o more_o which_o can_v be_v adduce_v prove_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v a_o receptive_a power_n and_o not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a and_o to_o this_o purpose_n these_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v observable_a he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o say_v he_o though_o he_o be_v dead_a yet_o shall_v he_o live_v which_o import_v that_o a_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v dead_a may_v believe_v that_o be_v to_o say_v receive_v the_o seed_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n into_o it_o for_o this_o divine_a principle_n be_v of_o a_o insinuate_a and_o penetrate_a nature_n it_o do_v make_v way_n for_o its_o own_o reception_n in_o the_o heart_n insinuate_a and_o as_o it_o be_v wind_v itself_o thereinto_o as_o the_o fire_n do_v into_o wood_n or_o any_o combustible_a matter_n but_o now_o when_o this_o principle_n do_v labour_n to_o work_v itself_o into_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o power_n the_o soul_n may_v resist_v and_o do_v so_o many_o time_n whereby_o it_o remain_v dead_a though_o otherwise_o it_o may_v have_v live_v by_o give_v way_n unto_o or_o receive_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o seed_n and_o thus_o that_o subtle_a objection_n may_v be_v answer_v which_o be_v thus_o believe_v or_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o can_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o soul_n that_o live_v a_o spiritual_a life_n for_o as_o a_o dead_a body_n can_v walk_v or_o move_v so_o nor_o can_v a_o dead_a soul_n believe_v from_o this_o it_o be_v infer_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v first_o live_v before_o it_o can_v believe_v or_o have_v faith_n and_o consequent_o that_o none_o other_o can_v have_v faith_n but_o they_o who_o be_v already_o partaker_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o believe_v while_o yet_o you_o grant_v all_o man_n be_v not_o spiritual_o alive_a but_o this_o be_v answer_v by_o the_o former_a distinction_n of_o the_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n therefore_o unto_o that_o proposition_n on_o which_o the_o whole_a strength_n of_o the_o objection_n lie_v viz._n that_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n i_o thus_o answer_v that_o the_o operative_a faith_n or_o believe_v be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v i_o grant_v but_o as_o for_o the_o receptive_a property_n of_o faith_n through_o it_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o spiritual_a life_n by_o which_o it_o come_v to_o indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v conceive_v to_o live_v spiritual_o before_o the_o receptive_a faith_n this_o receptive_a faith_n be_v the_o same_o with_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v or_o turn_v or_o be_v convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o lord_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o principle_n in_o it_o and_o to_o the_o divine_a presence_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n therein_o whereof_o i_o have_v say_v somewhat_o chap._n 4._o and_o whether_o the_o soul_n be_v suppose_v only_o to_o be_v passive_a in_o this_o receptive_a faith_n or_o partly_o passive_a and_o partly_o active_a the_o matter_n be_v not_o much_o provide_v it_o be_v acknowledge_v that_o it_o can_v so_o much_o as_o believe_v even_o according_a to_o the_o receptive_a faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v enable_v and_o assist_v after_o a_o supernatural_a manner_n by_o the_o lord_n also_o some_o may_v object_v this_o doctrine_n seem_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o seem_v to_o hold_v when_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o and_o that_o no_o man_n perish_v for_o want_v of_o power_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n answ._n there_o be_v no_o contrariety_n herein_o for_o when_o we_o say_v it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o we_o understand_v not_o this_o simple_o and_o absolute_o
all_o time_n to_o help_v the_o travel_a soul_n but_o yet_o there_o be_v some_o time_n more_o especial_o wherein_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v more_o abundant_a access_n and_o opportunity_n unto_o the_o soul_n which_o every_o one_o be_v to_o observe_v within_o himself_o and_o improve_v the_o same_o let_v none_o therefore_o strive_v or_o wrestle_v in_o their_o own_o will_n or_o natural_a strength_n to_o attain_v to_o this_o silence_n but_o let_v they_o be_v faithful_a to_o god_n in_o what_o they_o know_v to_o be_v his_o will_n and_o be_v diligent_a in_o some_o honest_a and_o lawful_a employment_n and_o careful_o attend_v the_o meeting_n of_o the_o faithful_a when_o they_o meet_v together_o to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n and_o speak_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o one_o another_o as_o they_o be_v move_v and_o to_o worship_n and_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o of_o such_o as_o be_v near_o unto_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v become_v strong_a man_n in_o christ_n have_v a_o exceed_a great_a influence_n upon_o the_o weak_a to_o help_v they_o and_o gather_v they_o to_o the_o true_a silence_n and_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v more_o abundant_o manifest_a where_o the_o faithful_a meet_v together_o in_o his_o name_n as_o â—e_n have_v promise_v whereunto_o many_o can_v set_v their_o seal_n and_o thus_o every_o one_o who_o be_v sincere_a and_o faithful_a to_o what_o they_o know_v and_o have_v receive_v will_v natural_o and_o as_o it_o be_v by_o a_o natural_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n attain_v by_o degree_n more_o and_o more_o unto_o such_o a_o state_n until_o they_o perfect_o come_v to_o enjoy_v and_o possess_v it_o so_o as_o to_o see_v jerusalem_n a_o quiet_a habitation_n and_o to_o behold_v the_o king_n in_o his_o beauty_n and_o see_v his_o go_n in_o the_o sanctuary_n which_o will_v cause_v the_o soul_n to_o sing_v with_o david_n and_o to_o say_v as_o it_o be_v psal._n 84._o ver_n 1_o 10._o how_o amiable_a be_v thy_o tabernacle_n o_o lord_n of_o host_n for_o a_o day_n in_o thy_o court_n be_v better_a than_o a_o thousand_o but_o of_o this_o i_o warn_v thou_o that_o if_o thou_o have_v time_n enough_o to_o spare_v as_o thou_o think_v to_o rest_v from_o all_o outward_a affair_n that_o thou_o may_v the_o more_o abundant_o apply_v thyself_o to_o this_o silence_n and_o silent_a wait_a yet_o thou_o may_v exceed_v through_o a_o wrong_n and_o blind_a zeal_n and_o so_o may_v endanger_v and_o hurt_v thyself_o for_o such_o a_o silence_n as_o do_v not_o righteousness_n which_o be_v a_o state_n of_o enjoy_v spiritual_a light_n and_o life_n of_o god._n iii_o that_o this_o occasion_n be_v minister_v unto_o every_o one_o through_o jesus_n christ_n who_o more_o large_a description_n of_o it_o to_o what_o will_v be_v afterward_o more_o full_o treat_v of_o i_o shall_v only_o in_o these_o few_o word_n describe_v it_o holiness_n as_o a_o man_n can_v be_v partaker_n of_o it_o be_v a_o man_n be_v like_o unto_o god_n so_o far_o as_o he_o can_v receive_v a_o likeness_n unto_o he_o which_o be_v by_o receive_v the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o its_o complete_a ordinary_a way_n of_o work_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n not_o find_v or_o beget_v in_o a_o instant_n but_o raise_v up_o by_o degree_n from_o the_o divine_a seed_n the_o formation_n of_o which_o as_o it_o require_v the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a concurrence_n of_o god_n as_o a_o father_n and_o as_o the_o principal_a cause_n and_o worker_n so_o do_v it_o also_o require_v the_o concurrence_n of_o the_o soul_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n so_o to_o speak_v as_o the_o mother_n to_o conceive_v it_o in_o its_o most_o inward_o as_o the_o mother_n conceive_v the_o child_n in_o her_o womb_n which_o be_v a_o divine_a birth_n and_o in_o scripture_n be_v call_v christ_n form_v within_o and_o the_o flesh_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n because_o his_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n dwell_v and_o tabernacle_v therein_o and_o there_o through_o conveigh_v the_o manifestation_n of_o it_o unto_o the_o soul_n fourteen_o now_o a_o man_n regeneration_n be_v not_o simple_o the_o have_v and_o clear_a example_n whereof_o we_o have_v in_o cloth_n which_o be_v dip_v in_o the_o dyer_n fat_a drink_v in_o the_o tincture_n or_o die_v even_o substantial_o and_o yet_o it_o retain_v its_o own_o essence_n so_o that_o it_o be_v the_o same_o cloth_n still_o only_o have_v another_o die_n and_o colour_n from_o the_o tincture_n which_o it_o have_v drink_v in_o and_o substantial_o get_v it_o incorporate_v in_o itself_o xv._n but_o before_o this_o divine_a image_n can_v be_v form_v in_o the_o soul_n or_o that_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v tincture_v or_o leaven_v therewith_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v cleanse_v and_o purify_v from_o the_o pollution_n and_o defilement_n it_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o contrary_a image_n which_o be_v that_o of_o the_o serpent_n even_o as_o according_a to_o the_o former_a example_n before_o the_o cloth_n can_v receive_v the_o die_n it_o must_v be_v wash_v and_o make_v clean_o also_o the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o devil_n be_v of_o so_o contrary_a nature_n that_o they_o can_v live_v in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o place_n of_o the_o soul_n wherefore_o there_o must_v be_v some_o room_n prepare_v in_o the_o soul_n in_o its_o most_o contrariety_n and_o indeed_o the_o mortification_n and_o regeneration_n of_o the_o soul_n go_v on_o proportionable_o so_o that_o where_o the_o
regeneration_n be_v but_o in_o part_n it_o be_v because_o the_o mortification_n be_v but_o in_o part_n and_o where_o the_o mortification_n be_v become_v whole_a there_o the_o regeneration_n become_v whole_a also_o for_o that_o which_o hinder_v the_o image_n of_o god_n to_o spring_v up_o in_o its_o whole_a growth_n and_o statuâ—â—_n ready_o and_o speedy_o be_v the_o contrary_a image_n which_o themselves_o in_o it_o and_o take_v root_n till_o they_o fill_v it_o all_o over_o like_o a_o great_a tree_n over-shaddowing_a the_o whole_a land_n with_o its_o branch_n and_o fill_v it_o with_o its_o fruit_n i_o shall_v not_o add_v more_o particular_n at_o present_a be_v unwilling_a to_o burden_n the_o weak_a understanding_n of_o a_o beginner_n with_o many_o thing_n at_o the_o entrance_n there_o be_v many_o more_o doctrinal_a principle_n but_o they_o will_v come_v in_o time_n enough_o afterward_o these_o well_o know_v and_o understand_v will_v satisfy_v to_o begin_v with_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o which_o thing_n let_v none_o imagine_v they_o can_v be_v sufficient_o certify_v through_o this_o declaration_n or_o any_o other_o that_o can_v be_v outward_o give_v only_o it_o may_v be_v a_o occasion_n for_o they_o to_o observe_v the_o truth_n of_o these_o thing_n spring_v up_o in_o their_o own_o understanding_n from_o a_o measure_n of_o the_o same_o spirit_n from_o which_o they_o be_v declare_v chap._n ii_o show_v that_o the_o soul_n convert_v itself_o unto_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n within_o its_o self_n through_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o divine_a power_n upon_o it_o idolater_n he_o say_v he_o who_o you_o ignorant_o worship_n i_o declare_v unto_o you_o etc._n etc._n who_o be_v not_o far_o from_o every_o one_o of_o we_o for_o in_o he_o we_o live_v and_o move_v and_o have_v our_o be_v etc._n etc._n also_o unto_o the_o lycaonian_o who_o be_v idolater_n he_o preach_v after_o this_o manner_n that_o they_o shall_v turn_v from_o their_o vanity_n unto_o the_o live_a god_n now_o it_o be_v that_o which_o general_o pass_v among_o people_n that_o man_n shall_v turn_v unto_o god_n and_o that_o conversion_n be_v a_o turn_n unto_o god_n and_o unto_o jesus_n christ._n but_o that_o they_o be_v to_o turn_v unto_o he_o as_o he_o do_v inward_o manifest_a and_o reveal_v himself_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n in_o man_n heart_n this_o they_o have_v not_o be_v instruct_v in_o for_o that_o general_o all_o of_o they_o except_o those_o call_v the_o mystic_n deny_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n in_o these_o day_n as_o the_o immediate_a revelation_n of_o god_n in_o man_n heart_n and_o as_o for_o the_o mystic_n though_o they_o grant_v that_o the_o divine_a presence_n do_v immediate_o reveal_v itself_o in_o man_n heart_n and_o that_o man_n be_v to_o turn_v in_o their_o mind_n unto_o it_o which_o they_o call_v introversion_n yet_o they_o deny_v that_o man_n be_v to_o do_v this_o at_o first_o as_o while_o they_o be_v pollute_v in_o their_o gross_a abomination_n and_o lust_n to_o turn_v in_o unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n they_o judge_v a_o thing_n both_o presumptuous_a and_o vain_a presumptuous_a because_o it_o be_v altogether_o unsuitable_a and_o unbecoming_a that_o a_o soul_n pollute_v in_o its_o gross_a abomination_n and_o lust_n shall_v approach_v and_o draw_v near_o unto_o god_n and_o vain_a because_o though_o they_o shall_v attempt_v to_o do_v it_o they_o will_v find_v it_o as_o impossible_a as_o for_o a_o bird_n that_o be_v tie_v with_o a_o strong_a cord_n to_o the_o earth_n to_o flee_v upward_o to_o heaven_n from_o earth_n wherefore_o they_o require_v that_o the_o soul_n have_v attain_v unto_o some_o qualification_n and_o disposition_n which_o cleanse_v it_o from_o its_o gross_a impurity_n particular_o dwell_v upon_o the_o earth_n yet_o we_o have_v a_o plain_a and_o ready_a answer_n to_o this_o objection_n which_o be_v this_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o divine_a revelation_n in_o these_o day_n they_o leave_v the_o soul_n at_o a_o utter_a uncertainty_n that_o it_o can_v know_v the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o it_o from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o enemy_n for_o see_v will_v desire_v to_o know_v the_o truth_n of_o thy_o conversion_n by_o a_o way_n prio_fw-la to_o that_o of_o effect_n which_o be_v needful_a yea_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o thou_o to_o know_v in_o the_o very_a first_o instant_n in_o which_o thou_o set_v about_o to_o perform_v thy_o act_n of_o conversion_n whether_o they_o be_v true_a yea_o or_o no_o also_o whether_o that_o be_v the_o true_a presence_n or_o manifestation_n of_o god_n unto_o which_o thou_o do_v convert_v or_o but_o that_o false_a and_o frame_a god_n abovementioned_a or_o satan_n transform_v himself_o into_o the_o likeness_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v know_v thus_o if_o it_o be_v the_o true_a god_n and_o the_o true_a christ_n he_o do_v manifest_v himself_o so_o to_o be_v for_o god_n be_v light_a and_o christ_n be_v the_o light_n of_o the_o world_n which_o lighten_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n that_o they_o may_v believe_v and_o turn_v unto_o god_n now_o as_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o know_v the_o light_n even_o that_o which_o be_v outward_a but_o by_o itself_o and_o the_o manifestation_n that_o come_v from_o it_o so_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n so_o certain_a to_o know_v god_n and_o christ_n but_o by_o the_o light_n and_o spirit_n of_o manifestation_n which_o proceed_v from_o they_o and_o of_o this_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n but_o that_o there_o be_v some_o manifestation_n of_o god_n so_o plain_o and_o evident_o set_v before_o he_o as_o that_o he_o can_v but_o be_v convince_v that_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n and_o that_o frequent_o who_o appearance_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v so_o far_o different_a from_o every_o false_a appearance_n of_o satan_n or_o any_o god_n or_o image_n of_o he_o which_o the_o soul_n make_v to_o itself_o or_o can_v make_v that_o it_o may_v very_o plain_o and_o infallible_o distinguish_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o and_o need_v not_o to_o be_v deceive_v unless_o it_o witting_o and_o wilful_o give_v up_o itself_o to_o be_v deceive_v and_o if_o thou_o ask_v wherein_o do_v the_o appearance_n of_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o so_o far_o differ_v that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o easy_o discern_v i_o answer_v in_o this_o the_o true_a appearance_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n be_v against_o every_o sin_n more_o or_o less_o in_o thou_o whether_o of_o flesh_n or_o spirit_n and_o by_o it_o thou_o be_v reprove_v of_o every_o sin_n in_o some_o measure_n yea_o and_o it_o work_v as_o fire_n against_o the_o briaâ—s_n and_o thorn_n against_o every_o sin_n in_o thou_o and_o the_o body_n and_o root_n of_o it_o though_o at_o first_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v so_o sensible_a of_o it_o as_o to_o have_v a_o particular_a observation_n of_o all_o thy_o sin_n yet_o thou_o wilâ—_n find_v it_o work_v against_o they_o all_o as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o heap_n spare_v none_o of_o they_o nor_o reconcileable_a to_o any_o of_o they_o so_o that_o what_o ever_o particular_a sin_n be_v bring_v under_o thy_o particular_a observation_n thou_o will_v find_v the_o appearance_n of_o christ_n against_o it_o as_o much_o as_o any_o but_o now_o the_o false_a god_n which_o a_o man_n make_v unto_o himself_o in_o his_o mind_n be_v very_o reconcileable_a to_o many_o sin_n which_o thou_o be_v plain_o convince_v to_o be_v sin_n and_o he_o can_v dwell_v with_o they_o and_o let_v they_o flourish_v and_o grow_v large_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o not_o be_v a_o devour_a fire_n against_o they_o yea_o the_o false_a and_o counterfeit_a god_n be_v a_o enemy_n tâ—_n no_o sin_n at_o all_o and_o will_v never_o reprove_v or_o dissuade_v thou_o from_o any_o sin_n but_o o_o 〈…〉_z thou_o and_o this_o be_v the_o hypocrite_n 〈◊〉_d and_o the_o high_a fly_v notionist_n god_n who_o they_o in_o some_o sort_n stand_v in_o awe_n to_o offend_v as_o to_o some_o â—ross_a outward_a act_n or_o even_o some_o inward_a also_o because_o they_o have_v shape_v he_o in_o such_o and_o such_o a_o form_n as_o be_v contrary_n in_o appearance_n to_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n but_o as_o for_o thou_o love_v he_o that_o reprove_v every_o sin_n in_o thought_n or_o desire_n word_n or_o work_n and_o be_v dreadful_a unto_o every_o transgressor_n more_o or_o less_o yea_o be_v as_o a_o devour_a fire_n against_o they_o for_o that_o be_v the_o true_a god_n now_o this_o appearance_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v observe_v to_o manifest_v itself_o in_o a_o little_a small_a seed_n the_o least_o of_o all_o seed_n in_o the_o very_a inward_o of_o thy_o heart_n which_o be_v meek_a and_o holy_a and_o pure_a and_o harmless_a and_o be_v contrary_n unto_o nothing_o but_o sin_n can_v be_v reconcile_v with_o any_o thing_n save_o sin_n but_o with_o no_o sin_n in_o any_o measure_n i_o have_v find_v it_o with_o i_o the_o more_o to_o insist_v on_o this_o particular_a for_o that_o i_o certain_o know_v there_o be_v many_o who_o be_v woeful_o bewitch_v with_o a_o mystery_n of_o iniquity_n in_o relation_n to_o this_o matter_n be_v like_o capernanum_fw-la exalt_v to_o the_o heaven_n as_o it_o be_v in_o their_o notion_n about_o god_n so_o as_o to_o think_v they_o daily_o contemplate_v and_o enjoy_v he_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o idol_n and_o by_o the_o child_n of_o light_n they_o be_v see_v and_o feel_v to_o be_v it_o darkness_n and_o the_o seed_n be_v feel_v to_o suffer_v in_o they_o and_o to_o â—e_v in_o the_o very_a bond_n of_o death_n notwithstanding_o all_o their_o high_a and_o lofty_a imagination_n now_o if_o the_o seed_n be_v raise_v in_o thou_o so_o that_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o become_v form_v though_o but_o a_o little_a thou_o will_v feel_v it_o and_o its_o power_n as_o manifest_v to_o move_v stir_v and_o spring_n in_o thou_o as_o ever_o the_o mother_n feel_v the_o child_n to_o spring_v in_o her_o womb_n so_o that_o thou_o can_v no_o less_o doubt_v of_o the_o one_o than_o she_o can_v of_o the_o other_o and_o so_o by_o the_o stir_n and_o move_n thereof_o thou_o will_v begin_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o spiritual_a refreshment_n and_o joy_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n chap._n viii_o wherein_o divers_a advertisement_n and_o caution_n be_v give_v unto_o the_o soul_n in_o relation_n unto_o its_o apply_v itself_o unto_o work_n or_o operative_a exercise_n inward_a or_o outward_a through_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o we_o be_v his_o workmanship_n say_v the_o apostle_n create_v unto_o christ_n jesus_n unto_o good_a work_n that_o we_o shall_v walk_v in_o they_o so_o that_o the_o lord_n give_v not_o unto_o any_o man_n the_o be_v of_o a_o holy_a life_n with_o its_o power_n in_o vain_a or_o for_o no_o effect_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o they_o to_o bring_v forth_o good_a work_n even_o as_o the_o husbandman_n plant_v his_o vine_n and_o other_o tree_n that_o they_o may_v bring_v forth_o fruit._n we_o must_v improve_v and_o make_v use_n of_o our_o master_n money_n to_o profit_v withal_o that_o our_o talon_n may_v increase_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o he_o who_o have_v give_v it_o unto_o we_o and_o to_o our_o own_o happiness_n and_o comfort_n
suffering_n as_o in_o a_o wine-press_n to_o the_o end_n that_o sweet_a wine_n may_v come_v forth_o that_o have_v the_o virtue_n in_o it_o to_o cure_v man_n of_o their_o wound_n both_o in_o relation_n to_o wrath_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o cry_v forth_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n upon_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n even_o therein_o and_o there_o through_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a breath_n or_o spirit_n which_o have_v and_o have_v a_o most_o effectual_a influence_n upon_o both_o man_n and_o the_o creation_n for_o their_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o see_v how_o and_o in_o what_o manner_n we_o shall_v improve_v the_o same_o effectual_o in_o order_n thereunto_o for_o indeed_o we_o shall_v find_v how_o the_o apostle_n do_v great_o improve_v and_o make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o order_n unto_o mortification_n or_o die_v unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o holiness_n and_o make_v progress_n therein_o unto_o perfection_n as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o few_o example_n rom._n 6.2_o how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o know_v you_o not_o that_o as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v baptize_v into_o jesus_n christ_n christ_n for_o the_o mortification_n of_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n and_o that_o unto_o perfection_n and_o do_v not_o sooth_n or_o please_v themselves_o to_o live_v in_o much_o sin_n and_o unholiness_n and_o speak_v peace_n to_o themselves_o therein_o because_o of_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o they_o and_o now_o i_o shall_v sum_v up_o in_o a_o few_o word_n the_o particular_a use_n and_o benefit_n which_o the_o saint_n receive_v in_o order_n to_o a_o grow_a and_o proceed_v in_o holiness_n through_o the_o improve_n the_o come_v suffering_n death_n and_o resurrection_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o outward_a through_o the_o power_n and_o light_n of_o his_o own_o holy_a spirit_n and_o life_n in_o and_o by_o which_o only_o they_o can_v improve_v they_o aright_o i._o as_o his_o come_v birth_n suffering_n death_n resurrection_n etc._n etc._n be_v present_v and_o set_v before_o we_o in_o the_o evidence_n and_o virtue_n of_o his_o own_o light_n and_o spirit_n in_o our_o heart_n so_o it_o be_v make_v a_o great_a occasion_n to_o strengthen_v both_o our_o faith_n in_o god_n and_o our_o love_n towards_o he_o forasmuch_o as_o our_o lord_n god_n the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v give_v by_o his_o outward_a come_n etc._n etc._n as_o aforesaid_a a_o very_a great_a and_o large_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n and_o good_a will_n towards_o all_o man_n for_o their_o salvation_n and_o of_o his_o patience_n and_o long-suffering_a in_o permit_v man_n so_o to_o use_v his_o own_o dear_a son_n which_o be_v as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v unto_o himself_o yea_o herein_o he_o give_v a_o most_o convince_a testimony_n how_o he_o have_v bear_v and_o suffer_v with_o wonderful_a long-suffering_a the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n which_o strike_v against_o his_o inward_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n in_o all_o age_n and_o generation_n before_o the_o wound_a and_o crucify_a it_o in_o they_o as_o now_o they_o do_v against_o he_o in_o the_o outward_a by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v great_o convince_v that_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v their_o salvation_n in_o so_o bear_v and_o suffer_v they_o for_o have_v he_o not_o intend_v love_n to_o they_o herein_o he_o may_v have_v ease_v himself_o of_o his_o adversary_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o altogether_o deliver_v that_o tender_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n from_o its_o suffering_n in_o they_o and_o bring_v intolerable_a suffering_n upon_o the_o transgressor_n themselves_o also_o herein_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o great_a testimony_n of_o his_o power_n to_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o though_o he_o deliver_v up_o his_o son_n to_o suffer_v most_o deep_a affliction_n in_o and_o under_o sinner_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n he_o raise_v he_o up_o again_o even_o from_o death_n and_o do_v manifest_o set_v he_o over_o all_o his_o adversary_n according_a to_o the_o work_n of_o which_o mighty_a power_n he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v unto_o the_o uttermost_a all_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o and_o so_o these_o thing_n be_v inward_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v indeed_o very_o forcible_a and_o prevail_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o it_o both_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o to_o rest_v and_o stay_v its_o faith_n upon_o he_o for_o its_o full_a and_o perfect_a salvation_n as_o also_o to_o work_v and_o beget_v love_n unto_o he_o in_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o wonderful_a love_n of_o god_n as_o manifest_v itself_o even_o so_o in_o the_o outward_a ii_o and_o yet_o more_o particular_o the_o come_n suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o present_v by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o aforesaid_a have_v a_o very_a special_a influence_n to_o kindle_v most_o ardent_a love_n in_o it_o towards_o he_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o love_n of_o his_o so_o wonderful_o manifest_v in_o the_o outward_a whereby_o for_o the_o soul_n save_v from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n he_o so_o humble_v himself_o by_o so_o many_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o bear_v such_o indignity_n and_o suffering_n as_o never_o any_o one_o do_v and_o all_o in_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o for_o it_o and_o for_o its_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v manifest_a in_o the_o outward_a body_n and_o suffer_v so_o deep_o therein_o even_o for_o the_o deliver_v our_o outward_a body_n also_o from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v as_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n as_o it_o be_v himself_o tell_v it_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n how_o he_o have_v humble_v himself_o and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o it_o be_v strong_a and_o prevail_a occasion_n to_o work_v most_o ardent_a and_o dear_a love_n in_o the_o soul_n towards_o he_o and_o his_o spirit_n and_o towards_o the_o father_n also_o who_o free_a gift_n of_o love_n he_o be_v iii_o and_o they_o have_v indeed_o a_o great_a influence_n when_o present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o work_v in_o our_o heart_n true_a and_o real_a repentance_n from_o all_o our_o sin_n yea_o and_o a_o perfect_a and_o universal_a hatred_n against_o they_o as_o have_v a_o sense_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o his_o suffering_n yea_o his_o deep_a and_o heavy_a suffering_n even_o in_o his_o soul_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v through_o the_o burden_n of_o our_o iniquity_n which_o he_o then_o do_v bear_v so_o that_o the_o wound_n he_o get_v in_o his_o bless_a body_n with_o the_o nail_n and_o the_o spear_n and_o the_o thorn_n and_o the_o violent_a hand_n of_o man_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o these_o wound_n he_o have_v in_o his_o righteous_a soul_n and_o
suffer_v death_n for_o sin_n give_v we_o a_o most_o convince_a example_n that_o we_o shall_v die_v unto_o it_o and_o suffer_v it_o no_o more_o to_o live_v in_o we_o now_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v and_o remember_v that_o in_o all_o these_o step_n the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n etc._n etc._n have_v these_o influence_n upon_o we_o not_o as_o they_o be_v present_v unto_o we_o bare_o in_o our_o own_o spirit_n or_o as_o we_o do_v bring_v they_o to_o our_o remembrance_n thereby_o and_o so_o make_v a_o work_n upon_o ourselves_o in_o our_o own_o thought_n and_o motion_n for_o in_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v never_o profit_v our_o own_o soul_n either_o in_o die_v unto_o sin_n or_o live_v in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n indeed_o we_o may_v thereby_o raise_v spark_n of_o our_o own_o kindle_v in_o the_o affectionate_a part_n and_o work_v some_o effect_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o may_v be_v a_o shadow_n or_o likeness_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o can_v never_o be_v the_o thing_n themselves_o but_o as_o they_o be_v inward_o present_v to_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o apply_v thereby_o and_o that_o instant_o and_o continual_o for_o it_o be_v his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n alone_o which_o both_o give_v the_o true_a understanding_n of_o the_o use_n and_o end_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o also_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n the_o live_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o they_o and_o in_o a_o live_n and_o effectual_a way_n do_v only_o and_o can_v apply_v they_o unto_o the_o soul_n and_o whole_a power_n thereof_o for_o the_o work_v such_o suitable_a effect_n and_o impression_n as_o be_v proper_a thereunto_o but_o some_o may_v say_v see_v the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v know_v and_o improve_v by_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o effectual_a to_o work_v faith_n and_o love_n in_o it_o towards_o god_n and_o for_o its_o mortification_n unto_o sin_n and_o live_n in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n will_v it_o not_o therefore_o seem_v that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o every_o one_o for_o the_o attainment_n of_o these_o thing_n for_o how_o can_v a_o soul_n believe_v that_o god_n will_v be_v gracious_a unto_o it_o or_o be_v reconcileable_a with_o it_o but_o as_o it_o look_v upon_o that_o testimony_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o love_n in_o send_v his_o belove_a son_n outward_o into_o the_o world_n to_o suffer_v and_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n in_o order_n unto_o our_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n also_o how_o can_v it_o love_n god_n with_o that_o purity_n and_o fervency_n of_o love_n which_o be_v according_a to_o the_o gospel_n but_o as_o it_o regard_v and_o consider_v that_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n in_o the_o come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o outward_a answ_n indeed_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n be_v of_o very_a bless_a use_n and_o advantage_n and_o all_o who_o have_v it_o shall_v be_v very_o thankful_a unto_o god_n who_o have_v give_v we_o this_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n goodwill_n long-suffering_a and_o power_n in_o the_o outward_a come_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o the_o more_o abundant_a help_a and_o enable_v we_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o love_v he_o yet_o this_o i_o say_v though_o express_a knowledge_n of_o his_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n be_v very_o profitable_a to_o beget_v faith_n and_o love_n in_o man_n towards_o god_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o aught_o to_o be_v high_o value_v in_o its_o place_n nevertheless_o this_o express_a knowledge_n be_v not_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o faith_n and_o love_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n may_v have_v and_o have_v a_o real_a and_o true_a influence_n upon_o they_o who_o know_v it_o not_o express_o for_o see_v he_o have_v taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n and_o give_v his_o life_n a_o ransom_n for_o all_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o it_o shall_v have_v a_o influence_n upon_o all_o yea_o the_o apostle_n express_o mention_n what_o it_o be_v rom._n 5.18_o 19_o how_o that_o by_o the_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n of_o christ_n the_o free_a gift_n be_v come_v upon_o all_o to_o justification_n of_o life_n look_v then_o as_o many_o of_o adam_n posterity_n suffer_v disadvantage_n by_o his_o disobedience_n who_o never_o know_v it_o express_o so_o how_o many_o thousand_o have_v be_v save_v before_o christ_n come_v in_o the_o outward_a who_o know_v it_o not_o express_o and_o many_o who_o know_v something_o of_o it_o it_o be_v but_o very_o dark_o and_o under_o vail_n and_o figure_n yea_o the_o very_a disciple_n do_v not_o for_o a_o good_a time_n know_v of_o his_o death_n so_o that_o when_o he_o tell_v they_o of_o it_o they_o be_v astonish_v and_o yet_o they_o have_v both_o faith_n and_o love_n in_o some_o measure_n see_v than_o that_o some_o have_v faith_n and_o love_n to_o god_n and_o be_v save_v without_o the_o express_a knowledge_n thereof_o before_o he_o come_v outward_o why_o not_o also_o after_o his_o come_n where_o his_o come_n outward_o have_v not_o be_v preach_v nor_o reveal_v yea_o have_v not_o god_n a_o way_n of_o save_a infant_n and_o the_o dumb_a and_o deaf_a who_o have_v not_o that_o express_a knowledge_n for_o now_o christ_n be_v inward_o come_v in_o a_o seed_n of_o life_n and_o light_a in_o all_o which_o be_v the_o word_n of_o reconciliation_n by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v reconcile_v with_o god_n as_o they_o join_v and_o apply_v their_o mind_n thereunto_o and_o in_o this_o the_o lord_n god_n do_v give_v a_o sufficient_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n mercy_n goodwill_n long_o suffer_v and_o power_n unto_o every_o man_n for_o his_o salvation_n whereby_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o he_o to_o attain_v unto_o the_o true_a faith_n in_o god_n and_o the_o true_a love_n towards_o he_o even_o according_a to_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o this_o holy_a seed_n the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o how_o he_o bear_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v intercession_n or_o atonement_n unto_o god_n may_v be_v learn_v in_o some_o measure_n with_o many_o other_o thing_n concern_v christ_n in_o relation_n to_o he_o and_o his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o the_o outward_a which_o be_v a_o outward_a and_o visible_a testimony_n of_o his_o inward_a do_n and_o suffering_n in_o all_o age_n in_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o indeed_o we_o find_v that_o this_o be_v only_o the_o true_a and_o effectual_a way_n of_o know_v the_o use_n and_o work_v of_o his_o come_v and_o suffering_n and_o death_n in_o the_o outward_a by_o turn_v and_o have_v our_o mind_n turn_v inward_o unto_o himself_o near_o and_o in_o our_o heart_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n to_o know_v by_o a_o inward_a feel_n and_o good_a experience_n his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o we_o by_o be_v make_v conformable_a thereunto_o in_o which_o holy_a seed_n as_o it_o arise_v in_o we_o such_o a_o clear_a light_n shine_v forth_o in_o our_o heart_n as_o give_v unto_o we_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o the_o use_n of_o his_o inward_a do_n and_o suffering_n hence_o also_o such_o a_o precious_a sweet_a and_o powerful_a life_n spring_v up_o from_o and_o in_o the_o same_o holy_a seed_n which_o do_v with_o much_o sweetness_n and_o comfort_n enable_v we_o to_o follow_v his_o example_n in_o the_o outward_a in_o faith_n in_o obedience_n in_o love_n in_o purity_n in_o patience_n in_o godliness_n in_o righteousness_n and_o temperance_n and_o all_o other_o thing_n wherein_o we_o be_v require_v to_o imitate_v he_o and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a loss_n we_o find_v people_n at_o general_o who_o seek_v to_o know_v the_o virtue_n and_o use_v of_o his_o come_v do_n and_o suffering_n in_o the_o outward_a by_o what_o they_o can_v outward_o hear_v or_o read_v of_o he_o while_o as_o they_o remain_v estrange_v from_o his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o yet_o they_o can_v never_o know_v the_o same_o but_o in_o this_o and_o oh_o at_o what_o great_a pain_n have_v many_o poor_a soul_n be_v to_o imitate_v christ_n in_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n by_o set_v he_o as_o their_o example_n before_o he_o but_o mere_o as_o the_o letter_n or_o history_n declare_v of_o he_o by_o which_o way_n yet_o they_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o the_o true_a imitation_n or_o follow_v of_o he_o for_o
