they_o that_o belong_v unto_o he_o and_o of_o this_o sort_n be_v their_o imagination_n of_o justification_n before_o god_n by_o work_n of_o the_o pope_n absolute_a supremacy_n &_o authority_n over_o all_o of_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n of_o invocation_n of_o dead_a saint_n and_o angel_n with_o a_o thousand_o such_o like_a abomination_n and_o sin_n all_o which_o and_o blood_n to_o hear_v much_o of_o man_n merit_n man_n freewill_n and_o many_o such_o like_a that_o they_o hold_v all_o tend_v to_o puff_n up_o man_n &_o that_o against_o god_n yet_o indeed_o to_o speak_v the_o truth_n what_o peace_n or_o comfort_n can_v there_o be_v in_o these_o thing_n when_o man_n be_v own_o knowledge_n both_o before_o &_o after_o regeneration_n shall_v within_o himself_o &_o in_o other_o direct_o stand_v up_o against_o the_o same_o to_o take_v one_o or_o two_o of_o they_o that_o so_o by_o they_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o rest_n what_o man_n that_o know_v or_o feel_v not_o only_o his_o backwardness_n to_o good_a thing_n but_o his_o inclination_n &_o ready_a good_a will_n to_o all_o evil_a and_o that_o not_o only_o before_o enlighten_v but_o after_o also_o again_o what_o hope_n can_v the_o heart_n have_v in_o invocate_a any_o other_o they_o the_o true_a &_o everliving_a god_n where_o first_o man_n know_v not_o whether_o they_o hear_v their_o prayer_n or_o no_o &_o second_o they_o may_v doubt_v of_o their_o good_a will_n towards_o they_o as_o of_o a_o thing_n very_o uncerten_a &_o three_o be_v past_o all_o doubt_n of_o their_o ability_n to_o help_v and_o what_o uncertenty_n be_v this_o nay_o what_o a_o dangerous_a and_o deadly_a rock_n be_v it_o to_o fling_a man_n upon_o not_o only_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o thing_n appertain_v to_o this_o life_n which_o be_v much_o but_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o soul_n &_o that_o that_o be_v to_o come_v which_o be_v more_o and_o yet_o of_o all_o other_o most_o heavy_a for_o a_o christian_a man_n as_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o own_o particular_a to_o think_v upon_o this_o be_v one_o that_o they_o teach_v all_o man_n in_o every_o place_n to_o doubt_v of_o their_o justification_n and_o salvation_n scripture_n lash_v out_o reason_n pretend_v authority_n of_o father_n and_o doctor_n and_o i_o can_v tell_v what_o as_o though_o with_o a_o mighty_a voice_n of_o great_a water_n they_o will_v carry_v underprop_a of_o truth_n and_o verity_n yet_o have_v not_o i_o assay_v for_o the_o staâ—e_v of_o myself_o and_o other_o only_o to_o supplant_v corruption_n a_o untruth_n but_o also_o to_o defend_v that_o truth_n that_o god_n have_v propound_v in_o his_o word_n and_o we_o hear_v sound_v in_o our_o church_n namely_o that_o every_o faithful_a man_n ought_v to_o be_v certain_o assure_v of_o his_o free_a justification_n and_o everlasting_a salvation_n through_o christ_n and_o herein_o i_o have_v purpose_v and_o mind_n through_o god_n goodness_n to_o perform_v and_o observe_v this_o order_n follow_v that_o be_v first_o to_o answer_v whatsoever_o they_o say_v and_o object_n against_o this_o truth_n and_o then_o afterward_o to_o ratify_v and_o confirm_v it_o and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v necessary_a not_o only_o because_o our_o adversary_n force_n be_v weaken_v yea_o utter_o overthrow_v our_o own_o may_v be_v find_v to_o be_v the_o more_o strong_a and_o better_a able_a to_o holy_a scripture_n and_o word_n of_o god_n foulie_o wrest_v and_o misunderstand_v as_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o place_n which_o they_o object_n shall_v i_o doubt_v not_o through_o god_n goodness_n plain_o appear_v or_o else_o from_o humane_a testimony_n and_o reason_n of_o which_o sure_o we_o need_v make_v no_o great_a reckon_n not_o only_o because_o they_o be_v as_o defence_n of_o falsehood_n through_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n and_o their_o own_o corruption_n to_o allege_v any_o thing_n which_o through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n shed_v abroad_o into_o our_o heart_n and_o the_o light_n of_o truth_n vouchsafe_v unto_o we_o we_o be_v not_o able_a both_o plain_o to_o descry_v and_o sufficient_o to_o confute_v we_o may_v let_v all_o that_o pass_v without_o any_o manner_n of_o touch_n at_o all_o we_o will_v begin_v first_o with_o those_o thing_n they_o allege_v out_o of_o scripture_n because_o they_o only_o indeed_o be_v material_a &_o so_o afterward_o come_v to_o humane_a authority_n now_o because_o the_o scripture_n of_o god_n be_v not_o unright_o divide_v into_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n and_o they_o allege_v somewhat_o out_o of_o both_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o this_o corrupt_a point_n we_o will_v first_o answer_v the_o place_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o after_o of_o the_o new_a place_n out_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n they_o common_o allege_v from_o thence_o such_o place_n as_o
cause_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o bad_a deal_n to_o suspect_v fear_v &_o doubt_n &_o doubt_v there_o or_o they_o can_v not_o be_v say_v to_o be_v sin_n or_o evil_a yet_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n who_o not_o only_o in_o his_o own_o nature_n be_v always_o like_a unto_o himself_o free_a from_o the_o least_o shadow_n or_o show_v of_o turn_v that_o may_v be_v but_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o our_o heart_n for_o as_o the_o former_a hazerd_v what_o say_v i_o nay_o overthrow_v the_o health_n of_o our_o soul_n &_o that_o more_o dangerous_o by_o much_o than_o any_o bodily_a poison_n do_v or_o can_v do_v the_o state_n of_o our_o outward_a man_n for_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o the_o mind_n may_v be_v safe_a and_o sure_a whereas_o in_o the_o other_o special_o persist_v in_o there_o service_n of_o christ_n whether_o public_o in_o the_o congregation_n or_o private_o in_o the_o family_n as_o also_o for_o the_o careful_a accomplishment_n of_o our_o christian_a duty_n either_o at_o home_n or_o abroad_o for_o what_o likelihood_n or_o probability_n be_v there_o that_o he_o shall_v appear_v before_o god_n or_o do_v good_a unto_o man_n who_o spirit_n be_v disquiet_v within_o he_o see_v that_o a_o quiet_a spirit_n be_v a_o thing_n much_o set_v by_o before_o god_n and_o fit_v we_o also_o for_o natural_a duty_n these_o great_a difcfiulty_n &_o danger_n be_v not_o nay_o can_v be_v discern_v but_o by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n neither_o indeed_o can_v the_o evil_a of_o they_o be_v prevent_v and_o beat_v back_o but_o by_o careful_a take_n unto_o we_o and_o daily_o use_v of_o all_o the_o armour_n that_o christ_n himself_o and_o not_o
the_o grace_n of_o god_n for_o that_o can_v they_o never_o come_v into_o that_o be_v he_o for_o those_o who_o the_o lord_n love_v he_o love_v unto_o the_o end_n but_o drip_v or_o slide_v into_o sin_n and_o transgression_n and_o those_o neither_o not_o of_o the_o high_a degree_n but_o of_o the_o mean_a nature_n which_o he_o call_v afterward_o temptation_n appertain_v to_o man_n which_o though_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n as_o any_o other_o sin_n shall_v may_v dismay_v we_o much_o yet_o shall_v they_o not_o work_v as_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o his_o goodness_n towards_o we_o spirit_n labour_v nothing_o more_o than_o this_o to_o draw_v the_o corinthian_n from_o security_n to_o heed_n and_o carefulness_n which_o he_o do_v as_o by_o propund_v unto_o they_o ancient_a ourselves_o upon_o our_o present_a estate_n or_o foolish_a conceit_n and_o opinion_n that_o we_o have_v of_o ourselves_o but_o rather_o that_o acknowledge_v our_o weakness_n faintness_n and_o unworthiness_n and_o also_o god_n grace_n and_o goodness_n towards_o we_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o live_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o combat_v against_o our_o corruption_n and_o flesh_n we_o shall_v crave_v god_n aid_n and_o assistance_n against_o sin_n and_o satan_n if_o the_o apostle_n here_o then_o have_v forbid_v the_o corinthian_n to_o trust_v in_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n it_o we_o must_v know_v that_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n be_v unseperable_a companion_n and_o go_v as_o it_o be_v arm_n in_o arm_n together_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v 1._o tim._n 1.19_o yea_o and_o that_o the_o fruit_n accompany_v they_o be_v never_o utter_o sunder_v from_o they_o but_o at_o some_o one_o time_n or_o another_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o their_o measure_n where_o the_o thing_n themselves_o be_v and_o that_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n have_v boldness_n towards_o god_n and_o be_v well_o certify_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o their_o own_o salvation_n thereby_o and_o that_o this_o in_o his_o meaning_n indeed_o it_o may_v appear_v by_o sundry_a word_n before_o go_v as_o when_o he_o say_v by_o this_o that_o be_v true_a and_o sincere_a love_n to_o our_o brethren_n we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v belong_v unto_o god_n who_o he_o signify_v also_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v when_o be_v say_v and_o shall_v before_o he_o assure_v our_o heart_n which_o assurance_n bring_v with_o it_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n can_v but_o shut_v out_o and_o kill_v as_o it_o be_v all_o doubt_v and_o again_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v when_o he_o say_v hereby_o we_o know_v that_o he_o abide_v in_o we_o even_o by_o the_o spirit_n which_o he_o have_v give_v us._n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v see_v that_o this_o be_v no_o good_a or_o sound_a reason_n to_o reason_n from_o the_o fact_n of_o man_n to_o or_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n for_o man_n fact_n for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v evil_a and_o unlawful_a whereas_o all_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n be_v true_a and_o holy_a even_o as_o he_o himself_o &_o though_o man_n either_o in_o practice_n or_o persuasion_n will_v condemn_v he_o or_o they_o yet_o shall_v he_o be_v just_a when_o he_o speak_v and_o pute_v when_o he_o judge_v fact_n express_v or_o show_v thing_n do_v but_o never_o declare_v much_o less_o prove_v the_o lawefulnes_n of_o the_o thing_n practise_v beside_o though_o we_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o even_o the_o faithful_a be_v not_o only_o convince_v but_o condemn_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o persuasion_n when_o they_o consider_v their_o unworthiness_n yet_o fear_v we_o not_o also_o to_o affirm_v that_o even_o then_o they_o be_v absolve_v and_o clear_v also_o for_o so_o often_o as_o they_o look_v unto_o themselves_o and_o sin_n they_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v prick_v and_o terrify_v because_o sin_v see_v and_o feel_v indeed_o can_v bring_v forth_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o itself_o no_o better_a fruit_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o they_o behold_v christ_n crucify_v and_o run_v unto_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o his_o death_n not_o only_o of_o absolute_a but_o of_o infinite_a merit_n our_o own_o dignity_n or_o worthiness_n which_o indeed_o be_v none_o but_o all_o manner_n of_o unworthines_n nor_o yet_o to_o behold_v our_o own_o unworthiness_n otherwise_o then_o to_o humble_v we_o before_o god_n and_o in_o ourselves_o and_o to_o make_v we_o to_o run_v unto_o christ_n and_o to_o his_o righteousness_n more_o earnest_o &_o speedy_o then_o we_o do_v but_o send_v we_o unto_o self_n same_o subject_n but_o the_o have_v of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o namely_o rom._n 10._o verse_n 3._o and_o also_o rom._n 11._o verse_n 5.6_o psal_n 3.6_o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v satisfy_v any_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o stop_n his_o mouth_n from_o bark_v or_o bellow_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n howbeit_o our_o adversary_n yet_o press_v this_o point_n further_o and_o object_n say_v christ_n say_v in_o the_o gospel_n if_o any_o man_n love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o commandment_n or_o say_n or_o word_n but_o no_o man_n keep_v his_o word_n therefore_o say_v they_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no._n first_o for_o the_o form_n of_o the_o i_o mean_v in_o that_o sense_n and_o meaning_n have_v be_v by_o his_o own_o word_n to_o have_v cross_v and_o thuart_v his_o own_o knowledge_n and_o to_o have_v speak_v more_o indeed_o then_o truth_n be_v why_o they_o what_o be_v it_o that_o he_o will_v signify_v and_o set_v out_o unto_o we_o thereby_o sure_o this_o much_o that_o the_o care_n and_o conscience_n that_o the_o faithful_a have_v to_o obey_v his_o will_n and_o these_o good_a beginning_n and_o proceed_n that_o they_o have_v make_v therein_o by_o his_o spirit_n he_o will_v accept_v they_o as_o absolute_a and_o cover_v with_o the_o fullness_n of_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n that_o be_v and_o be_v in_o himself_o and_o so_o present_v they_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n neither_o do_v that_o dislike_n i_o that_o one_o answer_v hereto_o namely_o that_o this_o be_v a_o sentence_n or_o say_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v not_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o perfect_a fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n fast_o the_o truth_n and_o purity_n of_o that_o doctrine_n that_o in_o the_o gospel_n be_v commend_v unto_o we_o concern_v christ_n and_o as_o sound_a member_n of_o the_o church_n to_o profess_v it_o open_o and_o as_o faithful_a
god_n and_o be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o own_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o appoint_v indeed_o among_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n notwithstanding_o the_o weakness_n and_o want_n of_o it_o which_o say_v not_o the_o quantity_n of_o it_o as_o whether_o it_o be_v little_a or_o great_a suffice_v but_o the_o soundness_n &_o truth_n of_o it_o suffice_v though_o not_o before_o god_n neither_o for_o there_o be_v want_n in_o we_o &_o our_o good_a work_n that_o way_n yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o assurance_n for_o though_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o our_o purpose_n or_o before_o god_n yet_o it_o may_v suffice_v for_o another_o and_z as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o for_o even_o as_o not_o the_o quantity_n so_o much_o as_o the_o quality_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o truth_n and_o steadfastness_n of_o it_o be_v it_o that_o in_o some_o sort_n commend_v we_o to_o god_n but_o special_o minister_v much_o comfort_n to_o our_o own_o conscience_n and_o as_o not_o long_o and_o many_o prayer_n but_o short_a and_o sweet_a as_o we_o may_v say_v yea_o so_o do_v we_o say_v and_o believe_v also_o touch_v all_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o namely_o our_o repentance_n and_o let_v this_o suffice_v for_o this_o point_n 8_o their_a eight_o argument_n they_o make_v thus_o pride_n be_v a_o vice_n displease_v god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n humility_n and_o modesty_n be_v a_o virtue_n that_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n and_o be_v assure_v of_o eternal_a salvation_n be_v be_v and_o to_o be_v prove_v by_o many_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o particular_o by_o this_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a and_o therefore_o we_o say_v nothing_o to_o it_o but_o willing_o yield_v and_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o the_o truth_n thereof_o but_o the_o minor_a be_v corrupt_a and_o false_a and_o therefore_o we_o deny_v it_o in_o both_o the_o part_n or_o proposition_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o arrogancy_n to_o be_v assure_v general_o of_o god_n favour_n for_o all_o mercy_n and_o particular_o of_o his_o grace_n concern_v eternal_a salvation_n since_o god_n himself_o for_o the_o better_a uphold_v of_o our_o heart_n and_o hope_n that_o way_n have_v be_v please_v to_o give_v unto_o we_o many_o gracious_a both_o prop_n that_o which_o we_o have_v not_o and_o yet_o deceive_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n imagine_v we_o have_v it_o or_o else_o have_v it_o to_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o have_v more_o than_o we_o enjoy_v or_o else_o enjoy_v it_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o it_o either_o as_o though_o we_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o or_o as_o though_o god_n have_v give_v it_o we_o to_o that_o end_n to_o make_v we_o swell_v over_o other_o but_o to_o assure_v ourselves_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o of_o eternal_a life_n be_v a_o doctrine_n that_o god_n have_v deliver_v in_o his_o word_n for_o the_o good_a and_o stay_n of_o his_o own_o people_n as_o we_o have_v already_o hear_v heretofore_o and_o shall_v again_o hereafter_o hear_v it_o prove_v more_o at_o large_a and_o therefore_o we_o can_v not_o arrogate_v or_o take_v any_o more_o unto_o ourselves_o then_o that_o that_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n belong_v unto_o we_o and_o presume_v here_o we_o can_v or_o be_v proud_a whether_o receive_v it_o and_o again_o we_o know_v god_n give_v no_o grace_n to_o any_o evil_a end_n howesoever_o man_n in_o his_o own_o corruption_n and_o satan_n in_o his_o malice_n against_o he_o abuse_v they_o many_o time_n thereto_o but_o as_o the_o grace_n themselves_o be_v good_a so_o both_o he_o in_o his_o purpose_n do_v and_o we_o in_o our_o practice_n ought_v to_o aim_v at_o good_a end_n and_o effect_n that_o so_o the_o one_o answer_v the_o other_o he_o may_v have_v glory_n other_o man_n good_a and_o ourselves_o comfort_n on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n to_o doubt_v distress_a soul_n and_o both_o these_o point_v i_o think_v we_o may_v see_v plain_a by_o and_o earthly_a comparison_n for_o as_o when_o a_o great_a prince_n or_o person_n that_o both_o have_v promise_n the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n the_o pledge_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o many_o particular_a grace_n both_o outward_a and_o inward_a as_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o bestow_v upon_o us._n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v it_o be_v not_o pride_n but_o christian_a humility_n not_o only_o to_o think_v or_o speak_v low_o of_o but_o as_o it_o be_v to_o distrust_v yea_o

respect_n of_o god_n for_o so_o they_o be_v always_o sure_a and_o certain_a but_o the_o better_a to_o seal_v up_o the_o faithful_a performance_n of_o they_o in_o our_o heart_n while_o we_o be_v enable_v by_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o accomplish_v &_o perform_v the_o same_o we_o assure_v our_o own_o heart_n that_o since_o we_o can_v perfect_o fulfil_v they_o ourselves_o &_o yet_o be_v fulfil_v by_o another_o for_o we_o we_o shall_v in_o his_o absolute_a accomplishment_n thereof_o &_o righteousness_n have_v a_o plentiful_a supply_n for_o all_o our_o defect_n whatsoever_o we_o know_v further_o that_o if_o many_o a_o compassionate_a man_n in_o the_o world_n do_v not_o take_v all_o advantage_n of_o breach_n of_o covenant_n or_o condition_n that_o another_o have_v make_v with_o he_o make_v any_o answer_n or_o satisfaction_n unto_o god_n for_o they_o or_o sure_o determine_v concern_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o repentance_n because_o god_n have_v reveal_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o his_o word_n and_o to_o fetch_v it_o from_o his_o own_o head_n or_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v fit_a for_o that_o be_v deep_a and_o deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o no_o man_n shall_v hope_v for_o salvation_n but_o rather_o despair_v of_o it_o which_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v absurd_a be_v both_o ungodly_a and_o uncomfortable_a also_o but_o if_o they_o will_v yet_o further_o object_n and_o say_v that_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o he_o do_v true_o repent_v and_o believe_v or_o else_o whether_o he_o ascribe_v unto_o himself_o the_o thing_n he_o have_v not_o we_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v a_o untrue_a assertion_n to_o say_v that_o no_o man_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o do_v true_o repent_v believe_v etc._n etc._n for_o though_o the_o scripture_n have_v not_o teach_v we_o to_o know_v whether_o our_o faith_n be_v sufficient_a or_o our_o repentance_n weighty_a enough_o yet_o have_v it_o give_v we_o certain_a infallible_a note_n by_o which_o we_o may_v discern_v and_o judge_v of_o the_o sincerity_n and_o truth_n both_o of_o our_o faith_n and_o repentance_n for_o as_o all_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n general_o be_v sure_a seal_n and_o pledge_n of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v in_o we_o and_o more_o particular_o our_o holy_a prayer_n to_o god_n according_a to_o that_o which_o be_v say_v rom._n 10._o how_o shall_v they_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o who_o they_o believe_v not_o so_o in_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n follow_v our_o repentance_n seal_v up_o also_o the_o sincerity_n and_o soundness_n thereof_o in_o our_o several_a soul_n now_o what_o these_o be_v we_o may_v see_v large_o recite_v 2._o cor._n 7._o as_o great_a care_n clear_v of_o ourselves_o indignation_n fear_n desire_v zeal_n revenge_n etc._n etc._n and_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o or_o may_v we_o not_o say_v that_o if_o in_o the_o little_a light_n of_o nature_n that_o remain_v in_o we_o untainted_a we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o discern_v of_o some_o sundry_a place_n of_o scripture_n and_o namely_o jame_v 1._o where_o the_o spirit_n say_v brethren_n count_v it_o exceed_a joy_n when_o you_o fall_v into_o diverse_a temptation_n know_v that_o the_o try_v of_o your_o faith_n bring_v forth_o patience_n &c_n &c_n or_o else_o correct_v we_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o perish_v with_o the_o wicked_a world_n but_o rather_o that_o by_o
