as_o soldier_n often_o do_v against_o the_o standard-bearer_n when_o as_o jehoshua_n the_o high_a priest_n stand_v before_o the_o lord_n satan_n stand_v at_o his_o right_a hand_n to_o hinder_v he_o zach._n 3._o 1._o he_o be_v a_o lie_a spirit_n in_o the_o mouth_n of_o four_o hundred_o false_a prophet_n 22._o and_o this_o old_a red_a dragon_n reu._n 12._o with_o his_o tail_n draw_v down_o the_o three_o part_n of_o the_o star_n of_o heaven_n he_o desire_v to_o winnow_v peter_n and_o to_o try_v he_o by_o temptation_n luke_n 22._o and_o as_o the_o king_n of_o aram_n say_v of_o acab_n 31._o how_o to_o comfort_v other_o in_o time_n oâ—_n temptation_n also_o to_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a use_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o force_n of_o it_o in_o resist_a temptation_n for_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o temptation_n teach_v man_n many_o thing_n which_o they_o can_v never_o learn_v by_o bare_a study_n so_o that_o one_o say_v well_o read_v meditation_n prayer_n and_o temptation_n these_o four_o make_v a_o divine_a the_o second_o point_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v what_o be_v the_o cause_n which_o move_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o go_v into_o the_o wilderness_n which_o be_v the_o lead_n of_o the_o spirit_n jesus_n be_v lead_v aside_o of_o the_o spirit_n luke_n 4._o 1._o or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v he_o be_v carry_v apart_o mark_n 1._o 12._o not_o by_o a_o force_a but_o a_o voluntary_a motion_n this_o be_v not_o a_o local_a transportation_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n as_o that_o of_o eliah_n and_o of_o philip_n from_o the_o eunuch_n but_o by_o the_o inward_a instinct_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o be_v move_v and_o make_v willing_a to_o go_v 〈◊〉_d as_o the_o word_n which_o luk._n 4._o 1._o use_v show_v plain_o and_o by_o the_o spirit_n both_o guide_v the_o spirit_n and_o be_v guide_v by_o the_o spirit_n for_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v man_n be_v lead_v and_o guide_v by_o the_o spirit_n but_o as_o he_o be_v god_n he_o do_v guide_v and_o send_v his_o spirit_n objection_n christ_n send_v the_o holy_a ghost_n objection_n therefore_o can_v be_v lead_v by_o it_o answer_n ans._n as_o christ_n be_v man_n he_o be_v guide_v by_o god_n spirit_n as_o he_o be_v god_n he_o send_v the_o spirit_n hence_o we_o may_v behold_v the_o exceed_a holiness_n of_o the_o manhood_n or_o humane_a nature_n of_o christ_n 1._o who_o as_o he_o be_v man_n he_o may_v not_o only_o the_o more_o easy_o encounter_v but_o more_o victorious_o overcome_v his_o enemy_n the_o devil_n for_o if_o satan_n have_v see_v he_o iâ—_n his_o glory_n he_o dare_v not_o so_o fierce_o and_o so_o eager_o have_v set_v upon_o he_o and_o therefore_o dotâ—_n as_o the_o fisherman_n who_o hide_v the_o hook_n and_o show_v only_o the_o bait_n so_o christ_n he_o show_v his_o solitary_a it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v fit_a for_o the_o divelâ—_n purpose_n for_o when_o the_o woman_n be_v alonâ—_n how_o soon_o have_v the_o devil_n overcome_v she_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o go_v inâ—â—_n the_o wilderness_n grant_n the_o devil_n that_o he_o 〈◊〉_d desire_v to_o have_v he_o alone_o by_o himself_o four_o reason_n christ_n will_v be_v tempt_v in_o the_o wilderness_n where_o be_v none_o to_o help_v he_o nor_o to_o assist_v he_o because_o the_o whole_a praise_n of_o the_o victory_n belong_v to_o himself_o alone_o last_o reason_n christ_n go_v into_o the_o wilderness_n that_o so_o after_o he_o may_v return_v again_o with_o great_a authority_n and_o reverence_n to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n for_o we_o know_v that_o when_o one_o have_v live_v with_o we_o and_o depart_v for_o a_o season_n and_o after_o return_n again_o we_o do_v receive_v he_o with_o great_a reverence_n and_o make_v more_o account_n of_o he_o from_o this_o practice_n of_o christ_n his_o go_v into_o the_o wilderness_n monk_n the_o papist_n gather_v that_o man_n may_v live_v monastical_a life_n in_o cloister_n wood_n den_n cell_n etc._n etc._n from_o the_o society_n and_o company_n of_o man_n but_o this_o their_o collection_n â—is_n but_o fond_a as_o may_v appear_v by_o these_o reason_n first_o christ_n do_v this_o by_o the_o special_a motion_n and_o direction_n of_o god_n spirit_n they_o go_v into_o their_o cell_n without_o any_o warrant_n from_o god_n second_o he_o go_v but_o once_o for_o a_o certain_a time_n they_o continue_v always_o there_o three_o christ_n during_o his_o abode_n in_o the_o wilderness_n fast_v and_o abstain_v from_o all_o sustenance_n but_o those_o among_o the_o papist_n that_o live_v monastical_a and_o solitary_a life_n enjoy_v all_o their_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n in_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o therefore_o though_o solitariness_n at_o some_o time_n be_v commendable_a to_o fit_v we_o for_o meditation_n prayer_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n yet_o to_o live_v continual_o without_o the_o company_n and_o society_n 〈◊〉_d man_n be_v neither_o commendable_a nor_o warrantable_a to_o be_v tempt_v of_o the_o devil_n circumstance_n here_o be_v the_o enâ—_n wherefore_o christ_n be_v lead_v of_o the_o spirit_n into_o the_o wilderness_n temptation_n namely_o to_o be_v tempt_v of_o thâ—_n devil_n now_o this_o action_n to_o allure_v he_o 〈◊〉_d some_o mean_n to_o sin_n and_o though_o chriâ—â—_n can_v have_v confound_v satan_n by_o a_o word_n 〈◊〉_d his_o mouth_n yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o do_v wiâ—â—lingly_o permit_v and_o suffer_v he_o to_o tempt_v he_o because_o now_o he_o stand_v in_o our_o stead_n and_o this_o be_v a_o part_n of_o his_o sufferance_n to_o be_v thus_o tempt_v of_o the_o devil_n but_o how_o can_v christ_n be_v tempt_v question_n see_v he_o be_v most_o holy_a answer_n even_o as_o he_o be_v man_n ans._n for_o all_o that_o he_o may_v be_v tempt_v as_o our_o first_o parent_n be_v before_o they_o have_v sin_v the_o devil_n tempt_v man_n either_o by_o convey_v into_o their_o mind_n some_o secret_a suggestion_n or_o else_o move_v they_o by_o some_o outward_a object_n that_o he_o may_v put_v into_o they_o some_o conceit_n of_o that_o sin_n which_o he_o will_v have_v they_o commit_v as_o unto_o judas_n the_o devil_n cast_v this_o vile_a thought_n into_o his_o heart_n judas_n betray_v thy_o master_n john_n 13._o 27._o so_o here_o the_o devil_n suggest_v unto_o the_o mind_n of_o christ_n these_o motion_n to_o move_v he_o to_o unbelief_n idolatry_n and_o covetousness_n but_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n first_o that_o christ_n his_o most_o holy_a heart_n withstand_v all_o satan_n temptation_n again_o as_o these_o wicked_a motion_n disquiet_a and_o trouble_v man_n mind_n and_o bring_v molestation_n upon_o they_o so_o it_o befall_v our_o saviour_n christ_n for_o he_o be_v move_v with_o these_o temptation_n but_o yet_o without_o all_o sin_n three_o man_n when_o they_o be_v tempt_v though_o they_o do_v not_o altogether_o receive_v and_o approve_v of_o the_o temptation_n yet_o they_o be_v taint_v with_o they_o but_o yet_o christ_n be_v never_o so_o much_o as_o any_o whiâ—â—_n taint_v nor_o his_o holy_a heart_n do_v ever_o approve_v of_o they_o in_o any_o sort_n but_o constant_o repel_v they_o as_o if_o a_o man_n cast_v a_o match_n into_o tinder_n 〈◊〉_d will_v catch_v fire_n and_o burn_v but_o cast_v it_o into_o water_n it_o will_v quench_v it_o so_o temptation_n come_v into_o our_o heart_n which_o be_v like_a unto_o tinder_n we_o be_v easy_o taint_v with_o they_o though_o we_o dâ—_n not_o altogether_o entertain_v they_o but_o the_o most_o holy_a heart_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o water_v to_o quench_v they_o at_o the_o first_o the_o devil_n tempt_v man_n with_o sundry_a blasphemous_a horrible_a and_o unclean_a thought_n now_o that_o we_o may_v discern_v they_o and_o keep_v ourselves_o from_o despair_n when_o we_o find_v they_o in_o we_o we_o must_v know_v that_o in_o the_o mind_n there_o be_v many_o cogitation_n which_o arise_v of_o the_o flesh_n and_o from_o our_o own_o corrupt_a heart_n and_o these_o be_v sin_n beside_o these_o there_o be_v other_o cogitation_n convey_v and_o suggest_v unto_o we_o by_o thâ—_n devil_n and_o these_o be_v the_o devil_n temptation_n but_o no_o sin_n to_o we_o unless_o we_o entertain_v they_o receive_v and_o approve_v of_o they_o they_o bâ—_n indeed_o our_o cross_n but_o satan_n sin_n foâ—_n christ_n be_v tempt_v by_o the_o devil_n but_o with_o stand_v and_o repel_v his_o temptation_n anâ—_n not_o give_v spite_n against_o god_n for_o when_o as_o the_o lord_n haâ—_n speak_v from_o heaven_n say_v this_o be_v my_o 〈◊〉_d belove_a son_n in_o who_o i_o be_o well_o please_v here_o the_o devil_n come_v and_o contradict_v the_o voice_n of_o god_n nay_o go_v about_o to_o prove_v god_n a_o liar_n in_o that_o he_o will_v make_v christ_n believe_v that_o he_o be_v not_o the_o true_a son_n of_o god_n hence_o we_o may_v by_o this_o practice_n of_o satan_n learn_v to_o discern_v false_a teacher_n use_v there_o have_v be_v many_o both_o excellent_a and_o learned_a man_n which_o have_v deny_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n as_o ebeon_n cerinthus_n and_o other_o only_o affirm_v that_o christ_n be_v a_o excellent_a man_n and_o a_o worthy_a prophet_n now_o see_v they_o deny_v jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v the_o true_a son_n of_o god_n they_o show_v themselves_o to_o be_v false_a teacher_n and_o such_o as_o be_v the_o devil_n scholar_n for_o so_o say_v the_o apostle_n john_n 1._o john_n 4._o 1_o 2_o 3._o again_o in_o that_o the_o devil_n seek_v to_o persuade_v christ_n that_o he_o be_v not_o the_o son_n of_o god_n though_o god_n by_o his_o own_o voice_n from_o heaven_n have_v immediate_o before_o proclaim_v he_o to_o be_v his_o son_n hence_o we_o may_v perceive_v the_o impudent_a malice_n of_o satan_n who_o seek_v in_o all_o thing_n to_o contradict_v god_n himself_o for_o if_o the_o lord_n pronounce_v a_o blessing_n upon_o any_o man_n the_o devil_n he_o will_v present_o pronounce_v curse_v and_o damnation_n if_o god_n testify_v to_o a_o man_n soul_n that_o he_o be_v the_o child_n and_o no_o child_n of_o god_n the_o devil_n will_v labour_v on_o the_o contrary_a to_o persuade_v he_o that_o he_o be_v in_o good_a estate_n &_o shall_v be_v save_v and_o so_o fill_v his_o heart_n with_o extreme_a presumption_n &_o make_v he_o more_o bold_a than_o he_o ought_v to_o be_v command_v that_o be_v as_o if_o satan_n shall_v have_v say_v to_o christ_n bid_v this_o or_o do_v but_o think_v he_o shall_v have_v intend_v no_o harm_n in_o these_o word_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v we_o shall_v see_v that_o in_o the_o propound_v of_o these_o point_n his_o policy_n be_v to_o overthrow_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n and_o he_o in_o propound_v of_o the_o truth_n do_v it_o not_o for_o any_o love_n or_o like_n to_o it_o but_o that_o he_o may_v more_o easy_o deceive_v our_o saviour_n to_o bring_v he_o to_o doubt_v whether_o he_o be_v indeed_o that_o son_n of_o god_n or_o not_o this_o must_v admonish_v we_o to_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o do_v not_o always_o give_v credit_n to_o the_o devil_n &_o listen_v unto_o he_o though_o he_o speak_v the_o truth_n for_o such_o be_v satan_n policy_n that_o when_o he_o will_v seem_v most_o to_o speak_v the_o truth_n than_o he_o mean_v to_o deceive_v we_o most_o and_o by_o speak_v the_o truth_n he_o seek_v most_o to_o overthrow_v our_o faith_n in_o the_o truth_n but_o as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n do_v refuse_v their_o testimony_n though_o the_o devil_n speak_v the_o truth_n 25._o and_o as_o paul_n do_v not_o suffer_v the_o devil_n to_o speak_v in_o the_o maid_n 18._o though_o he_o do_v acknowledge_v the_o apostle_n to_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o the_o true_a god_n so_o we_o must_v beware_v how_o we_o listen_v to_o satan_n even_o when_o he_o speak_v the_o truth_n for_o he_o never_o speak_v the_o truth_n because_o he_o love_v the_o truth_n but_o that_o speak_v the_o truth_n he_o may_v be_v soon_o believe_v and_o more_o easy_o deceive_v we_o and_o do_v we_o the_o great_a harm_n that_o these_o stone_n s._n luke_n say_v this_o stone_n 3._o in_o the_o singular_a number_n to_o reconcile_v these_o two_o place_n whereas_o matthew_n speak_v in_o the_o plural_a number_n of_o many_o stone_n this_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o he_o speak_v of_o satan_n temptation_n as_o he_o first_o set_v upon_o christ_n and_o then_o in_o the_o begin_n of_o his_o temptation_n he_o bid_v christ_n to_o turn_v all_o these_o stone_n into_o bread_n luke_n he_o say_v this_o stone_n speak_v but_o of_o one_o must_v be_v understand_v as_o the_o devil_n urge_v and_o enforce_v his_o temptation_n the_o better_a to_o persuade_v christ_n to_o yield_v unto_o it_o as_o if_o the_o devil_n shall_v have_v say_v it_o may_v be_v thou_o think_v it_o too_o much_o to_o turn_v all_o these_o stone_n be_v so_o many_o into_o bread_n do_v but_o turn_v this_o one_o stone_n into_o bread_n because_o i_o will_v not_o trouble_v thou_o overmuch_o that_o so_o i_o may_v believe_v thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o this_o deal_n of_o the_o devil_n with_o christ_n doctr._n we_o may_v learn_v that_o when_o the_o devil_n have_v once_o begin_v his_o temptation_n than_o he_o will_v be_v more_o instant_a in_o urge_v of_o it_o he_o be_v very_o loath_a to_o have_v the_o repulse_n and_o therefore_o will_v urge_v it_o and_o follow_v it_o but_o if_o he_o can_v gain_v but_o a_o little_a ground_n at_o least_o in_o some_o small_a matter_n he_o will_v be_v content_a as_o here_o to_o persuade_v christ_n though_o he_o will_v not_o turn_v many_o stone_n into_o bread_n that_o he_o will_v turn_v but_o this_o one_o stone_n into_o bread_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v learn_v that_o as_o the_o devil_n be_v very_o instant_a to_o enforce_v and_o urge_v his_o temptation_n so_o we_o must_v be_v as_o instant_a to_o resist_v they_o and_o yield_v no_o not_o in_o the_o least_o matter_n that_o he_o tempt_v we_o to_o vers._n 4._o but_o he_o answer_v say_v man_n shall_v â—ot_n live_v by_o bread_n only_o but_o by_o every_o word_n that_o procee_v out_o of_o the_o mouth_n of_o god_n these_o word_n contain_v the_o most_o wise_a and_o heavenly_a answer_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o the_o first_o temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o in_o this_o answer_n of_o he_o note_v three_o point_n first_o the_o answer_n itself_o and_o jesus_n answer_v say_v second_o whence_o our_o saviour_n christ_n take_v his_o answer_n it_o be_v write_v three_o the_o word_n of_o his_o answer_n man_n shall_v not_o live_v etc._n etc._n first_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n set_v down_o the_o answer_n of_o christ_n to_o show_v that_o he_o be_v not_o only_o now_o protestant_n like_v to_o chameleon_n into_o any_o colour_n of_o this_o we_o have_v experience_n in_o queen_n mary_n day_n few_o great_a man_n remain_v protestant_n but_o yee_v to_o the_o idolatry_n of_o those_o time_n this_o three_o temptation_n have_v two_o part_n first_o a_o promise_n second_o a_o condition_n and_o here_o the_o devil_n say_v not_o i_o will_v procure_v thou_o these_o thing_n at_o god_n hand_n but_o in_o his_o ow_v name_n i_o will_v give_v thou_o all_o these_o to_o make_v chrit_n depend_v upon_o he_o for_o they_o to_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o to_o deny_v his_o confidence_n in_o god_n and_o to_o rely_v upon_o the_o devil_n for_o a_o inheritance_n in_o this_o world_n in_o which_o vile_a practice_n of_o the_o devil_n we_o may_v behold_v his_o shameless_a boldness_n who_o dare_v offer_n christ_n the_o gift_n of_o all_o these_o conditional_o if_o he_o will_v worship_v he_o whereas_o indeed_o they_o do_v all_o most_o proper_o belong_v to_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o and_o be_v his_o own_o neither_o have_v satan_n any_o title_n to_o they_o but_o only_o by_o usurpation_n and_o as_o the_o devil_n here_o with_o christ_n so_o he_o deal_v with_o devil_n with_o the_o member_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n have_v a_o kingdom_n and_o that_o be_v spiritual_a in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n now_o the_o stewardship_n be_v the_o dispensation_n and_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v and_o against_o this_o the_o devil_n labour_v that_o it_o may_v become_v a_o earthly_a kingdom_n not_o spiritual_a but_o carnal_a not_o in_o that_o we_o may_v be_v contrary_a to_o the_o devil_n and_o therefore_o that_o we_o do_v wary_o consider_v what_o promise_v we_o make_v whether_o the_o thing_n we_o promise_v be_v lawful_a and_o in_o our_o own_o power_n and_o that_o we_o do_v it_o with_o sincere_a heart_n void_a of_o deceit_n and_o with_o purpose_n to_o be_v as_o good_a as_o our_o word_n and_o when_o we_o have_v promise_v according_o to_o perform_v our_o promise_n 4._o for_o that_o be_v a_o mark_n of_o god_n child_n 25._o and_o a_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o true_a faith_n in_o do_v the_o duty_n of_o equity_n a_o end_n to_o their_o misery_n and_o in_o stead_n of_o horror_n of_o conscience_n send_v they_o comfort_n &_o in_o stead_n of_o grief_n joy_v unspeakable_a and_o though_o the_o lord_n shall_v suffer_v they_o to_o be_v tempt_v all_o their_o life_n long_o till_o their_o die_a day_n yet_o then_o the_o lord_n will_v give_v they_o a_o bless_a issue_n of_o all_o their_o misery_n and_o fill_v continue_v the_o faithful_a servant_n of_o god_n till_o their_o die_a day_n and_o as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n depart_v as_o soon_o as_o he_o have_v end_v all_o his_o temptation_n we_o may_v continual_a intercourse_n of_o affliction_n we_o must_v then_o learn_v what_o be_v our_o own_o particular_a estate_n while_o we_o live_v in_o the_o church_n namely_o a_o state_n that_o be_v in_o a_o
