appearance_n nay_o here_o be_v not_o only_a room_n for_o himself_o but_o the_o house_n be_v so_o empty_a that_o many_o other_o unclean_a spirit_n more_o wicked_a than_o himself_o may_v have_v their_o abode_n and_o dwell_n there_o also_o satan_n say_v i_o will_v return_v to_o my_o house_n etc._n etc._n he_o speak_v as_o if_o he_o be_v sure_a enough_o that_o this_o sinner_n be_v his_o own_o and_o door_n out_o of_o the_o public_a view_n of_o people_n so_o the_o false_a and_o counterfeit_a christian_n reform_v his_o life_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n or_o like_o the_o pharisee_n make_v clean_o the_o outside_n of_o the_o cup_n and_o platter_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v still_o pollute_v and_o as_o vile_a as_o ever_o sweep_v but_o not_o with_o a_o proper_a and_o fit_a broom_n it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v sweep_v but_o alas_o it_o be_v only_o with_o the_o besom_n of_o legal_a reformation_n and_o how_o far_o that_o will_v cleanse_v the_o unclean_a and_o wicked_a person_n be_v know_v to_o all_o understand_a man_n it_o only_o take_v away_o the_o filth_n of_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n therefore_o say_v by_o st._n peter_n 2._o to_o escape_v the_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v the_o profane_a world_n i._n e._n vile_a and_o notorious_a sin_n and_o pollution_n and_o garnish_v or_o paint_v which_o may_v signify_v that_o seem_a sanctity_n moral_a virtue_n and_o the_o common_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n our_o saviour_n elsewhere_o compare_v pharisaical_a holiness_n 29._o to_o paint_v or_o garnish_v of_o a_o sepulchre_n woe_n unto_o you_o scribe_n and_o phrase_n of_o our_o saviour_n garnish_v which_o we_o know_v be_v common_o a_o curious_a piece_n of_o art_n man_n by_o their_o ingenuity_n strive_v to_o imitate_v nature_n they_o will_v draw_v the_o face_n of_o a_o man_n etc._n etc._n with_o curious_a paint_n very_o exact_a so_o that_o it_o much_o resemble_v the_o person_n be_v natural_a face_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o same_o it_o be_v but_o a_o piece_n of_o paint_n a_o artificial_a invention_n even_o so_o in_o like_a manner_n by_o the_o improvement_n of_o a_o man_n natural_a part_n common_a grace_n light_n and_o knowledge_n he_o may_v appear_v in_o the_o view_n and_o sight_n of_o man_n as_o a_o true_a child_n of_o god_n and_o may_v talk_v and_o discourse_n like_o a_o saint_n read_v and_o hear_v god_n word_n nay_o and_o pray_v also_o with_o much_o seem_a devotion_n and_o piety_n and_o may_v likewise_o bridle_v many_o unruly_a lust_n and_o gross_a enormity_n of_o life_n and_o give_v alm_n to_o the_o poor_a insomuch_o that_o he_o may_v very_o exact_o resemble_v a_o true_a and_o sincere_a christian_a and_o be_v take_v by_o all_o godly_a people_n to_o be_v indeed_o such_o a_o one_o but_o notwithstanding_o all_o it_o be_v but_o a_o artificial_a piece_n it_o be_v but_o like_o a_o curious_a paint_n or_o vainglorious_a garnish_n it_o be_v not_o the_o image_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o the_o new_a creature_n though_o it_o look_v like_o it_o much_o resemble_v it_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o same_o for_o the_o man_n be_v a_o mere_a hypocrite_n a_o counterfeit_a christian_a the_o work_n upon_o he_o be_v only_o the_o product_n of_o natural_a improvement_n and_o not_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o save_a operation_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n nay_o and_o satan_n though_o a_o unclean_a spirit_n like_v to_o dwell_v in_o transgression_n they_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n and_o stand_v in_o as_o much_o need_n to_o be_v quicken_v by_o jesus_n christ_n 2._o or_o to_o have_v a_o principle_n of_o divine_a life_n infuse_v into_o they_o if_o ever_o they_o spiritual_o live_v as_o lazarus_n have_v to_o be_v quicken_v and_o raise_v again_o after_o he_o have_v lie_v four_o day_n in_o the_o grave_a nay_o and_o it_o be_v evident_a god_n do_v work_v in_o we_o who_o be_v spiritual_o quicken_v and_o bring_v to_o believe_v after_o the_o same_o manner_n which_o he_o wrought_v in_o christ_n when_o he_o raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a 20._o one_o ground_n or_o cause_n of_o these_o man_n mistake_n may_v arise_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o that_o power_n man_n in_o general_n have_v by_o the_o help_n of_o natural_a conscience_n and_o the_o external_a mean_n of_o grace_n to_o leave_v the_o gross_a act_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o cleave_v to_o god_n in_o all_o act_n of_o obedience_n in_o reason_n to_o believe_v christ_n will_v have_v lose_v all_o his_o labour_n and_o infinite_a kindness_n than_o otherwise_o since_o man_n be_v natural_o so_o deprave_v and_o averse_a to_o that_o which_o be_v true_o good_a have_v such_o enmity_n in_o his_o heart_n against_o god_n and_o be_v whole_o under_o the_o power_n and_o government_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o this_o also_o will_v render_v the_o new_a covenant_n not_o better_a nay_o not_o so_o good_a as_o the_o first_o for_o then_o man_n be_v a_o perfect_a creature_n have_v not_o then_o such_o a_o captivate_a power_n of_o sin_n nor_o satan_n religion_n nay_o and_o they_o prove_v more_o vile_a and_o notorious_a in_o wickedness_n than_o ever_o it_o have_v often_o be_v see_v that_o this_o sort_n of_o man_n who_o forsake_v the_o way_n of_o god_n which_o they_o seem_v to_o own_o and_o profess_v have_v at_o last_o appear_v more_o impudent_a in_o sin_n than_o the_o vile_a man_n be_v ringleader_n to_o all_o lewd_a and_o curse_a practice_n and_o deed_n of_o darkness_n so_o that_o the_o same_o unclean_a spirit_n return_v into_o some_o of_o they_o in_o the_o same_o shape_n also_o though_o i_o can_v see_v any_o ground_n to_o believe_v it_o happen_v so_o to_o they_o all_o for_o doubtless_o many_o of_o they_o retain_v their_o seem_a zeal_n and_o external_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o outward_a holiness_n until_o they_o die_v evident_a it_o be_v our_o saviour_n apply_v this_o direful_a doom_n on_o the_o people_n of_o that_o generation_n viz._n the_o jew_n particular_o to_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n see_v the_o 38th_o verse_n yet_o certain_a it_o be_v many_o of_o they_o never_o turn_v to_o open_a profaneness_n but_o die_v in_o their_o unbelief_n whilst_o they_o abide_v proud_a and_o zealous_a pharisee_n yet_o i_o see_v no_o reason_n to_o question_v but_o this_o return_a devil_n and_o those_o seven_o other_o spirit_n more_o wicked_a be_v apply_v to_o they_o as_o well_o as_o to_o other_o who_o fall_v away_o from_o their_o seem_a piety_n and_o profession_n but_o of_o some_o of_o they_o especial_o it_o have_v happen_v according_a to_o what_o st._n peter_n speak_v 20._o for_o if_o after_o they_o have_v escape_v the_o pollution_n of_o the_o world_n through_o the_o knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o be_v again_o overcome_v the_o latter_a end_n of_o that_o man_n be_v worse_a than_o the_o first_o evil_a example_n of_o they_o lay_v a_o temptation_n on_o sincere_a and_o upright_a man_n and_o woman_n what_o do_v such_o and_o such_o do_v they_o be_v far_o rich_a than_o i_o and_o they_o will_v do_v
