life_n through_o the_o burden_n and_o weight_n of_o man_n iniquity_n but_o how_o christ_n do_v suffer_v under_o the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o can_v never_o be_v understand_v in_o any_o true_a measure_n but_o by_o these_o alone_o who_o be_v come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o a_o measure_n of_o his_o righteous_a life_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o to_o know_v a_o measure_n of_o redemption_n from_o sin_n thereby_o such_o will_v feel_v how_o that_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n jesus_n suffer_v by_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o so_o that_o many_o time_n we_o have_v feel_v the_o life_n of_o he_o in_o we_o to_o be_v deep_o smite_v and_o wound_v and_o deep_o to_o suffer_v through_o and_o by_o iniquity_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o it_o even_o in_o other_o and_o in_o a_o whole_a country_n and_o nation_n yea_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o the_o whole_a world_n the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v because_o of_o that_o deep_a and_o near_a sympathy_n that_o his_o life_n in_o the_o saint_n have_v with_o the_o seed_n of_o that_o life_n that_o be_v oppress_v in_o other_o till_o it_o be_v raise_v so_o that_o many_o in_o who_o this_o righteous_a life_n be_v raise_v to_o reign_v in_o perfect_a dominion_n over_o all_o its_o contrary_a in_o their_o own_o particular_n yet_o witness_v many_o time_n its_o deep_a suffering_n through_o its_o sympathy_n with_o that_o seed_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n oppress_v and_o murder_v in_o other_o so_o that_o indeed_o upon_o the_o matter_n this_o righteous_a life_n in_o none_o of_o the_o saint_n will_v be_v whole_o deliver_v from_o its_o suffering_n till_o that_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n over_o all_o the_o world_n be_v raise_v up_o in_o all_o heart_n to_o reign_v with_o it_o in_o dominion_n either_o in_o full_a love_n or_o wrath_n and_o true_o these_o deep_a suffering_n of_o christ_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o man_n iniquity_n real_o feel_v and_o witness_v by_o he_o as_o in_o the_o garden_n and_o on_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n i_o find_v the_o professor_n know_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o for_o they_o conceive_v not_o that_o christ_n suffer_v any_o other_o way_n by_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n lay_v on_o he_o then_o in_o that_o he_o suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v due_a to_o man_n for_o sin_n and_o so_o they_o understand_v his_o bear_v our_o sin_n to_o be_v only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o do_v bear_v which_o be_v not_o so_o for_o he_o suffer_v much_o more_o deep_o by_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o because_o of_o that_o great_a and_o implacable_a contrariety_n and_o enmity_n which_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o have_v against_o his_o tender_a life_n which_o at_o that_o time_n have_v muster_v up_o all_o its_o force_n against_o he_o the_o lord_n permit_v it_o so_o to_o be_v that_o by_o his_o patient_a and_o meek_a suffering_n he_o may_v overcome_v it_o as_o indeed_o he_o do_v and_o even_o upon_o the_o cross_n triumph_v over_o it_o and_o give_v the_o spirit_n of_o transgression_n the_o great_a blow_n and_o wound_n that_o ever_o it_o get_v which_o trial_n the_o father_n be_v with_o he_o in_o love_n and_o in_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n of_o that_o love_n the_o wrath_n become_v mitigate_v and_o qualify_v towards_o man_n and_o to_o speak_v proper_o the_o wrath_n be_v indeed_o against_o man_n but_o never_o on_o any_o account_n direct_o against_o christ_n who_o do_v indeed_o intervene_v and_o intermediate_v betwixt_o it_o and_o we_o to_o bear_v it_o off_o and_o qualify_v it_o as_o be_v abovesaid_a yet_o he_o can_v never_o suffer_v it_o as_o the_o damn_a do_v for_o he_o qualify_v it_o both_o in_o the_o father_n love_n and_o in_o his_o with_o he_o nay_o not_o on_o our_o account_n nor_o do_v the_o scripture_n speak_v any_o thing_n so_o only_o it_o please_v the_o father_n thus_o to_o try_v he_o and_o make_v he_o perfect_a thus_o by_o suffering_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v overcome_v sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o in_o the_o more_o glory_n and_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_v to_o help_v they_o that_o be_v under_o trial_n as_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o be_v present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a they_o have_v also_o great_a influence_n to_o raise_v in_o our_o soul_n most_o fervent_a breathe_n and_o supplication_n unto_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o for_o his_o pardon_v and_o forgive_a grace_n for_o and_o because_o of_o his_o son_n bloodshed_n his_o suffering_n and_o excellent_a document_n and_o instruction_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n both_o in_o doctrine_n and_o example_n and_o seal_v the_o same_o with_o his_o most_o holy_a and_o bless_a suffering_n who_o know_v no_o sin_n yet_o so_o willing_o
all_o time_n to_o help_v the_o travel_a soul_n but_o yet_o there_o be_v some_o time_n more_o especial_o wherein_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v more_o abundant_a access_n and_o opportunity_n unto_o the_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v more_o abundant_o manifest_a where_o the_o faithful_a meet_v together_o in_o his_o name_n as_o â—e_n have_v promise_v whereunto_o many_o can_v set_v their_o psal._n 84._o ver_n 1_o 10._o how_o amiable_a be_v thy_o tabernacle_n o_o lord_n of_o host_n for_o a_o day_n in_o thy_o court_n be_v better_a than_o a_o thousand_o but_o of_o this_o i_o warn_v thou_o that_o if_o thou_o have_v time_n enough_o to_o spare_v as_o thou_o think_v to_o rest_v from_o all_o outward_a affair_n that_o thou_o may_v the_o more_o abundant_o apply_v thyself_o to_o this_o the_o fire_n the_o soul_n find_v kindle_v in_o it_o be_v but_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o fancy_n or_o spark_n of_o its_o own_o kindle_v or_o if_o he_o can_v prevail_v that_o way_n but_o that_o the_o soul_n still_o persist_v in_o its_o conversion_n unto_o this_o sacred_a and_o divine_a fire_n then_o especial_o when_o he_o perceive_v that_o the_o soul_n feel_v it_o great_a force_n he_o will_v be_v tempt_v to_o despair_v tell_v it_o that_o god_n have_v kindle_v this_o fire_n in_o it_o for_o its_o utter_a destruction_n and_o torment_n and_o if_o he_o can_v prevail_v thus_o than_o he_o will_v tempt_v it_o with_o hard_a thought_n of_o god_n as_o if_o the_o lord_n be_v too_o severe_a and_o rigid_a in_o use_v such_o way_n with_o it_o also_o he_o will_v endeavour_v to_o stir_v up_o in_o it_o impatience_n grudge_v and_o fret_v weariness_n and_o discontent_n and_o a_o longing_n to_o return_v unto_o the_o fleshpot_n of_o egypt_n even_o to_o its_o former_a evil_n and_o licentious_a way_n of_o life_n in_o sin_n these_o and_o many_o such_o like_a trouble_n and_o trial_n will_v the_o poor_a soul_n meet_v with_o beside_o many_o outward_a occasion_n from_o the_o world_n both_o of_o pleasure_n and_o affliction_n to_o divert_v it_o and_o turn_v it_o aside_o from_o its_o persist_v in_o its_o conversion_n unto_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n by_o reason_n of_o these_o and_o such_o like_a inward_a trial_n and_o trouble_n divers_a after_o some_o measure_n of_o a_o real_a and_o true_a application_n and_o conversion_n of_o their_o mind_n unto_o god_n and_o christ_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n have_v turn_v back_o again_o and_o not_o continue_v in_o their_o begin_a conversion_n even_o like_o some_o unwise_a and_o cowardly_a patient_n who_o at_o first_o give_v themselves_o up_o unto_o the_o physian_a to_o be_v lance_v and_o tent_a and_o scarify_v but_o afterward_o find_v the_o pain_n and_o anxiety_n thereof_o shrink_v back_o and_o choose_v rather_o to_o remain_v in_o their_o wound_n and_o distemper_n though_o it_o shall_v cost_v they_o the_o lose_n of_o their_o life_n then_o endure_v a_o little_a trouble_n and_o pain_n for_o their_o cure_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v in_o twice_o or_o thrice_o a_o day_n if_o he_o omit_v this_o practice_n at_o a_o time_n how_o will_v he_o be_v trouble_v for_o it_o and_o what_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o trouble_n his_o habit_n strong_o incline_v he_o to_o it_o and_o give_v he_o no_o peace_n nor_o rest_n till_o it_o be_v do_v and_o this_o inclination_n he_o may_v ready_o judge_v to_o be_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n whereas_o it_o be_v but_o from_o his_o own_o habit_n and_o so_o be_v the_o more_o trouble_v as_o suppose_v he_o resist_v the_o spirit_n by_o this_o forbearance_n but_o now_o if_o he_o omit_v the_o necessary_a performance_n of_o other_o thing_n he_o be_v not_o accustom_v to_o he_o will_v not_o be_v trouble_v at_o all_o and_o thus_o how_o many_o care_v not_o to_o omit_v the_o duty_n of_o faithfulness_n and_o righteousness_n towards_o their_o neighbour_n who_o be_v at_o a_o great_a care_n to_o say_v their_o prayer_n but_o very_o that_o power_n in_o man_n which_o incline_v he_o to_o time_n stir_v and_o move_v hidden_o in_o they_o and_o by_o which_o they_o act_n divers_a practice_n of_o religion_n as_o by_o a_o certain_a secret_a instinct_n as_o it_o be_v unknown_a to_o habit_n for_o the_o habit_n be_v great_a and_o strong_a in_o they_o perhaps_o but_o the_o true_a power_n be_v a_o weak_a and_o tender_a thing_n even_o as_o a_o smoke_a flax_n and_o bruise_a reed_n to_o which_o the_o habit_n be_v a_o enemy_n always_o in_o its_o act_n and_o the_o devil_n seat_v himself_o in_o the_o habit_n and_o fight_v against_o the_o true_a power_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o act_n of_o the_o habit_n he_o concur_v therewith_o and_o true_o ere_o the_o true_a power_n can_v become_v strong_a in_o the_o soul_n so_o as_o to_o have_v the_o dominion_n the_o habit_n or_o habitual_a power_n must_v be_v break_v down_o for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o image_n of_o the_o beast_n and_o glory_n to_o the_o lord_n for_o ever_o who_o be_v give_v to_o a_o remnant_n the_o victory_n stick_v at_o the_o entrance_n and_o never_o get_v true_o into_o it_o therefore_o i_o may_v warrantable_o say_v the_o want_n of_o the_o plain_a and_o clear_a understanding_n of_o these_o step_n have_v consist_v in_o the_o lord_n be_v infuse_v certain_a supernatural_a habit_n of_o grace_n into_o the_o soul_n which_o sometime_o they_o express_v under_o this_o term_n the_o seed_n of_o grace_n or_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n so_o that_o that_o they_o judge_v that_o instant_o at_o the_o infuse_v of_o this_o seed_n the_o soul_n be_v convert_v and_o that_o all_o these_o soul_n into_o who_o this_o seed_n be_v infuse_v be_v instant_o convert_v and_o regenerate_v which_o be_v a_o gross_a error_n ii_o they_o suppose_v that_o conversion_n and_o regeneration_n be_v whole_o do_v in_o a_o instant_n and_o that_o at_o the_o very_a first_o instant_n the_o seed_n spread_v itself_o or_o be_v spread_v and_o diffuse_v through_o every_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n whole_o which_o be_v another_o great_a error_n iii_o they_o suppose_v that_o god_n work_v so_o irresistible_o in_o all_o man_n in_o who_o this_o seed_n be_v sow_v or_o infuse_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o resist_v but_o convert_v or_o regenerate_v they_o must_v be_v which_o be_v a_o three_o for_o though_o the_o lord_n can_v so_o work_v or_o may_v do_v so_o in_o some_o yet_o it_o be_v certain_a he_o do_v not_o so_o in_o all_o but_o in_o
as_o thus_o god_n be_v the_o life_n of_o our_o soul_n as_o a_o efficient_a câ—use_n of_o life_n and_o that_o original_o and_o immediate_o but_o not_o as_o the_o inform_a or_o formal_a cause_n thereof_o such_o as_o the_o holy_a life_n beget_v of_o the_o holy_a seed_n be_v which_o be_v even_o the_o formal_a cause_n of_o it_o chap._n vii_o show_v how_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o reflect_v upon_o itself_o and_o enter_v into_o trial_n and_o examination_n of_o itself_o whether_o it_o have_v true_o pass_v through_o the_o aforesaid_a step_n of_o conversion_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n and_o whether_o it_o have_v attain_v unto_o any_o beginning_n of_o the_o divine_a and_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o before_o it_o enter_v upon_o other_o operative_a exercise_n and_o how_o or_o by_o what_o rule_n or_o touchstone_n it_o may_v infallible_o know_v the_o same_o the_o service_n which_o the_o lord_n require_v of_o we_o and_o which_o we_o ought_v to_o perform_v unto_o he_o be_v our_o reasonable_a service_n as_o the_o scripture_n declare_v and_o express_o call_v it_o which_o beside_o other_o thing_n which_o may_v be_v mention_v a_o judgement_n of_o discretion_n betwixt_o cause_n and_o cauâ—es_n man_n be_v to_o do_v all_o his_o work_n with_o such_o a_o discretive_a judgement_n and_o understanding_n that_o he_o certain_o know_v both_o the_o end_n unto_o which_o he_o work_v and_o also_o the_o principle_n from_o which_o otherwise_o his_o work_n be_v rather_o brutal_a than_o rational_a and_o so_o as_o we_o be_v require_v to_o praise_v the_o lord_n with_o understanding_n as_o the_o scripture_n declare_v so_o we_o ought_v to_o serve_v the_o lord_n in_o every_o particular_a step_n with_o understand_v also_o so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o give_v a_o rational_a account_n of_o our_o service_n that_o it_o be_v indeed_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o this_o we_o can_v do_v unless_o we_o certain_o know_v that_o what_o we_o do_v be_v by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n assist_v we_o for_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n who_o give_v we_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v and_o without_o he_o we_o can_v do_v nothing_o not_o so_o much_o as_o say_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o lord_n but_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n divine_o and_o supernatural_o assist_v we_o indeed_o we_o may_v repeat_v the_o bare_a word_n without_o any_o supernatural_a assistance_n but_o here_o they_o be_v no_o wise_a regard_v of_o the_o lord_n for_o if_o they_o be_v not_o express_v with_o the_o supernatural_a assistance_n of_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a they_o be_v but_o dead_a and_o empty_a of_o that_o life_n and_o virtue_n which_o render_v they_o acceptable_a unto_o he_o and_o so_o any_o other_o work_n if_o we_o do_v not_o work_v it_o in_o he_o and_o by_o he_o supernatural_o assist_v we_o do_v it_o not_o to_o he_o and_o if_o we_o know_v not_o that_o we_o do_v so_o it_o be_v not_o our_o reasonable_a service_n which_o he_o require_v moreover_o whatever_o we_o do_v as_o a_o service_n unto_o the_o lord_n we_o ought_v to_o do_v it_o in_o faith_n but_o if_o we_o do_v not_o certain_o know_v from_o what_o principle_n or_o power_n we_o do_v any_o thing_n we_o be_v leave_v in_o a_o suspense_n and_o doubtfulness_n and_o have_v nothing_o but_o conjecture_v at_o best_a to_o build_v upon_o which_o be_v far_o lord_n he_o be_v to_o reflect_v upon_o himself_o and_o to_o enter_v upon_o a_o impartial_a examination_n and_o trial_n of_o his_o own_o soul_n whether_o he_o have_v pass_v true_o through_o the_o aforesaid_a step_n of_o conversion_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n and_o so_o whether_o he_o have_v attain_v unto_o any_o true_a beginning_n of_o the_o divine_a and_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o that_o before_o he_o enter_v upon_o other_o operative_a exercise_n because_o that_o unless_o in_o some_o measure_n he_o have_v true_o pass_v step_n may_v be_v counterfeit_v no_o less_o than_o other_o thing_n a_o soul_n may_v even_o seem_v to_o itself_o to_o have_v convert_v or_o turn_v itself_o inward_o unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o not_o have_v true_o convert_v thereunto_o yea_o i_o will_v say_v a_o great_a word_n but_o that_o which_o be_v a_o very_a certain_a truth_n many_o do_v inward_o convert_v as_o unto_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o to_o the_o true_a god_n but_o a_o false_a even_o a_o image_n of_o their_o own_o frame_n and_o devise_v and_o as_o unto_o christ_n but_o indeed_o it_o be_v unto_o antichrist_n and_o sure_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o very_a beginning_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o iniquity_n when_o satan_n put_v on_o the_o appearance_n of_o god_n and_o antichrist_n of_o christ_n sit_v down_o in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n and_o be_v axalt_v above_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v call_v god_n now_o to_o open_v this_o a_o little_a more_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o all_o man_n have_v some_o notion_n or_o image_n of_o god_n in_o their_o mind_n by_o which_o when_o they_o speak_v hear_v or_o read_v of_o he_o they_o some_o way_n think_v and_o form_v their_o thought_n and_o conception_n of_o he_o according_a to_o that_o objective_a notion_n or_o idea_n with_o which_o they_o be_v acquaint_v now_o though_o it_o be_v also_o certain_a that_o there_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n a_o true_a objective_n concept_n or_o idea_n of_o god_n put_v or_o plant_v by_o god_n himself_o in_o every_o man_n mind_n which_o be_v in_o and_o of_o the_o divine_a seed_n sow_v in_o every_o man_n yet_o the_o usual_a knowledge_n that_o man_n common_o have_v of_o god_n do_v not_o proceed_v from_o this_o true_a idea_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n nor_o be_v it_o the_o pattern_n or_o example_n according_a to_o which_o they_o usual_o frame_v the_o thought_n and_o conception_n of_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o usual_o speak_v read_v hear_v or_o consider_v of_o he_o in_o their_o mind_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o divine_a seed_n in_o and_o through_o which_o the_o true_a idea_n be_v receive_v in_o most_o man_n yea_o in_o all_o wicked_a man_n and_o unconvert_v be_v great_o burden_a and_o oppress_v through_o the_o lust_n and_o iniquity_n which_o prevail_v in_o they_o whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o frequent_o that_o true_a object_n concept_n or_o idea_n or_o manifestation_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n which_o in_o scripture_n be_v call_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d i._o e._n that_o which_o may_v be_v know_v of_o god_n be_v veil_v and_o cloud_v in_o they_o so_o that_o the_o soul_n do_v no_o more_o apprehend_v it_o then_o if_o it_o be_v not_o and_o when_o by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o visitation_n upon_o the_o soul_n this_o objective_a concept_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v bring_v into_o some_o measure_n of_o manifestation_n yet_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o intent_o take_v up_o with_o its_o sinful_a lust_n and_o pleasure_n that_o it_o do_v little_o observe_v it_o and_o many_o time_n not_o at_o all_o even_o as_o if_o some_o friend_n pass_v by_o before_o i_o in_o my_o view_n yet_o i_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o look_v in_o the_o revelation_n that_o he_o shall_v work_v lie_v and_o false_a wonder_n and_o cause_n fire_n to_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n videlicit_fw-la in_o appearance_n to_o deceive_v they_o who_o dwell_v upon_o the_o earth_n yet_o we_o have_v a_o plain_a and_o ready_a answer_n to_o this_o objection_n which_o be_v this_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n do_v send_v forth_o such_o a_o manifestation_n of_o his_o own_o light_n and_o spirit_n in_o it_o which_o discover_v infallible_o the_o work_n and_o deed_n which_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o revelation_n in_o these_o day_n they_o leave_v the_o soul_n at_o a_o utter_a uncertainty_n that_o it_o can_v know_v the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o it_o from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o enemy_n for_o see_v they_o deny_v that_o the_o operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n be_v objective_n and_o objective_o manifest_a they_o be_v but_o as_o certain_a blind_a or_o blank_a line_n and_o impression_n draw_v upon_o paper_n which_o no_o man_n can_v read_v or_o perceive_v but_o have_v show_v this_o at_o more_o length_n elsewhere_o i_o shall_v not_o further_o proceed_v in_o it_o at_o present_a now_o if_o thou_o presence_n or_o manifestation_n of_o god_n unto_o which_o thou_o do_v convert_v or_o but_o that_o false_a and_o frame_a god_n abovementioned_a or_o satan_n transform_v himself_o into_o the_o likeness_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v know_v thus_o if_o it_o be_v the_o true_a god_n and_o the_o true_a christ_n he_o do_v manifest_v himself_o so_o to_o be_v for_o god_n be_v light_a and_o christ_n be_v the_o light_n of_o the_o world_n which_o lighten_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n that_o they_o may_v believe_v and_o turn_v unto_o god_n now_o as_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o know_v the_o light_n even_o that_o which_o be_v outward_a but_o by_o itself_o and_o the_o manifestation_n that_o come_v from_o it_o so_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n so_o certain_a to_o know_v god_n and_o christ_n but_o by_o the_o light_n and_o spirit_n of_o manifestation_n which_o proceed_v from_o they_o and_o of_o this_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n but_o that_o there_o be_v some_o manifestation_n of_o god_n so_o plain_o and_o evident_o set_v before_o he_o as_o that_o he_o can_v but_o be_v convince_v that_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n and_o that_o frequent_o who_o appearance_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v so_o far_o different_a from_o every_o false_a appearance_n of_o satan_n or_o any_o god_n or_o image_n of_o he_o which_o the_o soul_n make_v to_o itself_o or_o can_v make_v that_o it_o may_v very_o plain_o and_o infallible_o distinguish_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o and_o need_v not_o to_o be_v deceive_v unless_o it_o witting_o and_o wilful_o give_v up_o itself_o to_o be_v deceive_v and_o if_o thou_o ask_v wherein_o do_v the_o appearance_n of_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o so_o far_o differ_v particular_a sin_n be_v bring_v under_o thy_o particular_a observation_n thou_o will_v find_v the_o appearance_n of_o christ_n against_o it_o as_o much_o as_o any_o but_o now_o the_o false_a god_n which_o a_o man_n make_v unto_o himself_o in_o his_o mind_n be_v very_o reconcileable_a to_o many_o sin_n which_o thou_o be_v plain_o convince_v to_o be_v sin_n and_o he_o can_v dwell_v with_o they_o and_o let_v they_o flourish_v and_o grow_v large_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o not_o be_v a_o devour_a fire_n against_o they_o yea_o the_o false_a and_o counterfeit_a god_n be_v a_o enemy_n tâ—_n no_o sin_n at_o all_o and_o will_v never_o reprove_v or_o dissuade_v thou_o from_o any_o sin_n but_o o_o 〈…〉_z thou_o and_o this_o be_v the_o hypocrite_n 〈◊〉_d and_o the_o high_a fly_v notionist_n god_n such_o a_o form_n as_o be_v contrary_n in_o appearance_n to_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n but_o as_o for_o thou_o love_v he_o that_o reprove_v every_o sin_n in_o thought_n or_o desire_n word_n or_o work_n and_o be_v dreadful_a unto_o every_o transgressor_n more_o or_o less_o yea_o be_v as_o a_o devour_a fire_n against_o they_o for_o that_o be_v the_o true_a god_n now_o this_o appearance_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v observe_v to_o manifest_v itself_o in_o a_o little_a small_a seed_n the_o least_o of_o all_o seed_n in_o the_o very_a inward_o of_o thy_o heart_n which_o be_v meek_a and_o holy_a and_o pure_a and_o harmless_a and_o be_v contrary_n unto_o nothing_o but_o sin_n can_v be_v reconcile_v with_o any_o thing_n save_o sin_n but_o with_o no_o sin_n in_o any_o measure_n i_o have_v find_v enjoy_v he_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o idol_n and_o by_o the_o child_n of_o light_n they_o be_v see_v and_o feel_v to_o be_v it_o darkness_n and_o the_o seed_n be_v feel_v to_o suffer_v in_o they_o and_o to_o â—e_v in_o the_o very_a bond_n of_o death_n notwithstanding_o all_o their_o high_a and_o lofty_a imagination_n now_o if_o the_o seed_n be_v raise_v in_o thou_o so_o that_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o become_v form_v though_o but_o a_o little_a thou_o will_v feel_v it_o and_o its_o power_n as_o manifest_v to_o move_v stir_v and_o spring_n in_o thou_o as_o ever_o the_o mother_n feel_v the_o child_n to_o spring_v in_o her_o womb_n so_o that_o thou_o can_v no_o less_o doubt_v of_o the_o one_o than_o she_o can_v of_o the_o other_o and_o so_o by_o the_o stir_n and_o move_n thereof_o thou_o will_v begin_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o spiritual_a refreshment_n and_o joy_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n chap._n viii_o wherein_o divers_a advertisement_n and_o caution_n be_v give_v unto_o the_o soul_n in_o relation_n unto_o its_o apply_v itself_o unto_o work_n or_o operative_a exercise_n inward_a or_o outward_a through_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o we_o be_v his_o workmanship_n say_v the_o apostle_n create_v unto_o christ_n jesus_n unto_o good_a work_n that_o we_o shall_v walk_v in_o they_o so_o that_o the_o a_o survey_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n and_o of_o all_o thing_n in_o it_o in_o the_o heaven_n the_o earth_n and_o the_o other_o element_n we_o shall_v find_v they_o all_o upon_o motion_n and_o work_v the_o work_n which_o belong_v unto_o the_o power_n of_o their_o natural_a be_v and_o thus_o the_o â—_z do_v in_o some_o sort_n resemble_v their_o maker_n who_o not_o only_o wrought_v the_o creature_n into_o a_o be_v by_o creation_n but_o continue_v still_o work_v to_o preserve_v uphold_v and_o govern_v they_o according_a to_o which_o the_o lord_n say_v my_o father_n work_v hitherto_o intruder_n no_o thief_n nor_o robber_n but_o a_o true_a servant_n of_o the_o house_n of_o god_n wherein_o thou_o be_v to_o work_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o have_v receive_v christ_n so_o must_v thou_o walk_v in_o he_o be_v now_o plant_v into_o he_o as_o the_o branch_n into_o the_o vine-tree_n and_o make_v a_o real_a partaker_n of_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o root_n and_o hereby_o join_v to_o the_o tree_n as_o a_o natural_a branch_n thou_o must_v now_o bring_v â—orth_o the_o fruit_n of_o good_a work_n and_o be_v come_v to_o live_v in_o the_o spirit_n thou_o must_v also_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o work_v and_o do_v all_o thy_o work_n in_o he_o and_o through_o he_o but_o some_o may_v say_v according_a to_o this_o method_n and_o way_n of_o proceed_v a_o man_n be_v keep_v long_o off_o from_o work_v for_o it_o may_v be_v a_o long_a time_n ere_o he_o pass_v through_o these_o step_n and_o so_o during_o this_o time_n suppose_v it_o be_v a_o year_n time_n or_o more_o shall_v he_o proceed_v to_o no_o operative_a exercise_n of_o religion_n but_o remain_v as_o a_o cypher_n or_o blank_n till_o he_o have_v get_v through_o these_o step_n may_v it_o not_o be_v say_v unto_o he_o why_o stand_v thou_o so_o long_o idle_a answ._n this_o be_v a_o objection_n which_o be_v much_o with_o many_o and_o have_v deep_a place_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o new_o convince_v one_o and_o who_o be_v but_o beginning_n they_o will_v fain_o be_v a_o do_v and_o work_v as_o other_o yea_o and_o the_o hypocritical_a part_n and_o spirit_n which_o have_v its_o life_n in_o dead_a performance_n and_o work_n will_v still_o be_v dog_v and_o prick_v they_o forward_o unto_o the_o do_n of_o thing_n before_o the_o time_n now_o learn_v a_o parable_n of_o a_o fruit-tree_n be_v it_o a_o appletree_n or_o the_o like_a into_o which_o a_o graft_n be_v imp_v be_v cut_v off_o from_o another_o tree_n where_o it_o do_v grow_v as_o a_o natural_a branch_n and_o do_v bud_n green_a and_o flourish_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n but_o such_o fruit_n as_o be_v naught_o now_o suppose_v that_o such_o be_v the_o good_a nature_n of_o the_o tree_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v that_o it_o make_v the_o graft_n bring_v forth_o other_o sort_n of_o fruit_n than_o former_o even_o good_a fruit_n and_o that_o in_o abundance_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o common_a tree_n in_o the_o outward_a for_o they_o do_v not_o change_v the_o graft_n imp_v on_o they_o into_o their_o own_o nature_n but_o rather_o the_o imp_n change_v the_o sap_n and_o virtue_n of_o spirit_n of_o the_o tree_n that_o it_o cause_v the_o tree_n to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n according_a to_o the_o kind_n of_o the_o graft_n itself_o but_o it_o be_v otherwise_o betwixt_o châ—ist_n and_o we_o man_n for_o we_o be_v plant_v or_o graft_v into_o he_o he_o change_v the_o nature_n of_o our_o fruit_n from_o evil_a to_o good_a otherwise_o the_o comparison_n hold_v very_o well_o now_o when_o the_o graft_n be_v cut_v off_o from_o its_o natural_a stock_n it_o be_v very_o gâ—â—en_v and_o full_a of_o life_n yea_o suppose_v it_o be_v full_a of_o blossom_n or_o fruit_n yet_o when_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o husbandman_n it_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o its_o natural_a stock_n and_o graft_v into_o another_o it_o do_v not_o instant_o spring_v and_o green_a and_o flourish_v as_o before_z far_o less_o bear_v new_a fruit_n but_o first_o of_o all_o die_v its_o greenness_n and_o flourish_n wither_v and_o its_o fruit_n fall_v off_o so_o that_o it_o remain_v very_o bare_a and_o empty-like_a for_o some_o time_n yet_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o altogether_o idle_a in_o it_o for_o by_o little_a and_o little_a the_o power_n of_o life_n in_o the_o tree_n into_o which_o it_o be_v ingraft_v do_v infuse_v and_o insinuate_v itself_o into_o it_o by_o which_o it_o unit_v and_o knit_v the_o graft_n to_o the_o tree_n by_o a_o natural_a union_n and_o then_o in_o process_n of_o time_n the_o graft_n begin_v to_o green_a and_o flourish_v again_o and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n both_o much_o better_a and_o more_o abundant_a as_o be_v say_v and_o here_o we_o may_v observe_v somewhat_o of_o all_o these_o step_n in_o a_o similitude_n which_o the_o graft_n pass_v through_o before_o it_o come_v to_o bear_v fruit_n as_o 1._o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n in_o the_o tree_n insinuate_v it_o self_n into_o the_o graft_n take_v hold_v of_o the_o faint_a and_o dead_a power_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o graft_n and_o convert_v or_o turn_v they_o into_o itself_o 2._o the_o graft_n be_v thus_o turn_v or_o join_v to_o the_o tree_n not_o by_o any_o outward_a bond_n but_o by_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o tree_n continue_v and_o persist_v therein_o which_o if_o it_o do_v not_o it_o can_v not_o receive_v life_n from_o the_o tree_n 3._o in_o this_o continuance_n it_o remain_v very_o passive_a do_v nothing_o but_o secret_o drink_v in_o the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o life_n from_o the_o tree_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o so_o by_o this_o mean_v it_o become_v in_o due_a time_n as_o a_o natural_a branch_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o bring_v forth_o its_o fruit_n as_o aforesaid_a now_o such_o be_v the_o discretion_n of_o the_o husband_n man_n that_o he_o require_v not_o present_a fruit_n from_o the_o tree_n neither_o be_v he_o offend_v with_o it_o that_o it_o yield_v not_o present_a fruit_n but_o patient_o wait_v for_o the_o fruit_n in_o the_o season_n of_o it_o even_o such_o be_v the_o discretion_n of_o the_o lord_n yea_o and_o much_o more_o towards_o man_n that_o if_o they_o convert_v and_o turn_v into_o the_o true_a vine_n and_o tree_n of_o life_n not_o resist_v the_o power_n of_o life_n therein_o but_o suffer_v it_o to_o work_v in_o they_o to_o kill_v the_o unholy_a life_n by_o which_o they_o live_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o sin_n and_o if_o they_o continue_v thus_o convert_v in_o a_o passive_a and_o forbear_v way_n suffer_v the_o spirit_n and_o power_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n in_o they_o to_o do_v in_o it_o what_o he_o please_v this_o be_v acceptable_a unto_o the_o lord_n even_o thus_o to_o die_v in_o he_o and_o bless_v be_v such_o for_o their_o work_n shall_v follow_v they_o in_o due_a time_n and_o this_o be_v according_a to_o what_o our_o lord_n teach_v himself_o unless_o say_v he_o a_o grain_n of_o wheat_n fall_v there_o be_v confusion_n and_o disorder_n in_o nature_n as_o indeed_o it_o have_v fall_v out_o through_o man_n disobedience_n to_o this_o holy_a life_n because_o man_n supreamist_n power_n of_o life_n videlicet_fw-la his_o will_n have_v not_o stand_v in_o subjection_n to_o the_o power_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n which_o be_v its_o supreme_a therefore_o have_v its_o power_n be_v take_v from_o it_o in_o great_a part_n that_o it_o can_v rule_v its_o inferior_a power_n as_o of_o the_o natural_a passion_n and_o affection_n but_o they_o often_o rebel_v against_o it_o so_o that_o many_o time_n a_o man_n be_v lead_v by_o his_o very_a animal_n passion_n into_o thing_n against_o his_o very_a will_n which_o will_v not_o be_v so_o be_v his_o will_n bring_v into_o a_o perfect_a subjection_n unto_o in_o conjunction_n therewith_o that_o when_o i_o speak_v of_o the_o one_o it_o be_v never_o to_o be_v understand_v but_o in_o conjunction_n with_o the_o other_o by_o this_o warrant_n i_o say_v i_o in_o thy_o heart_n against_o the_o thing_n thou_o have_v before_o thou_o to_o do_v iii_o and_o as_o thou_o be_v not_o forward_o or_o rash_o in_o thy_o own_o will_n to_o do_v any_o thing_n without_o the_o warrant_v aforesaid_a of_o the_o holy_a life_n mandatory_a or_o permissory_a â—o_o thou_o be_v to_o be_v as_o careful_a that_o thou_o be_v not_o backward_o negligent_a or_o unwilling_a to_o answer_v the_o will_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n in_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o it_o move_v and_o incline_v thou_o unto_o and_o require_v of_o thou_o for_o the_o hurt_n be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o in_o both_o viz._n in_o go_v about_o to_o do_v a_o thing_n or_o thing_n contrary_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o forbear_v to_o do_v that_o or_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o require_v of_o thou_o the_o one_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o commission_n the_o other_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o emission_n both_o of_o they_o the_o sin_n of_o disobedience_n against_o god_n and_o so_o both_o of_o they_o provoke_v the_o lord_n burden_n and_o grieve_v his_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n and_o both_o of_o they_o bring_v weakness_n conâ—usion_n deadness_n and_o darkness_n upon_o the_o soul_n iv._o do_v nothing_o doubtful_o and_o with_o unclearness_n and_o confusion_n of_o mind_n but_o exercise_v a_o perfect_a passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n as_o to_o all_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o clear_v up_o unto_o thou_o to_o be_v the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o right_a knowledge_n use_n and_o observation_n of_o this_o be_v of_o both_o great_a comfort_n and_o advantage_n unto_o the_o soul_n as_o we_o have_v often_o find_v by_o great_a and_o good_a experience_n 1._o it_o be_v of_o great_a comfort_n for_o it_o signify_v the_o great_a lenity_n and_o moderation_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o we_o that_o if_o we_o be_v single_o give_v up_o in_o our_o mind_n have_v a_o willingness_n of_o heart_n in_o simplicity_n and_o uprightness_n to_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n perfect_o in_o all_o thing_n if_o some_o thing_n even_o of_o great_a importance_n be_v unclear_a unto_o we_o he_o spare_v to_o charge_v the_o guiltiness_n of_o disobedience_n upon_o we_o till_o we_o be_v clear_a though_o we_o be_v â—ound_v in_o the_o forbearance_n of_o they_o which_o be_v great_a gentleness_n upon_o the_o lord_n part_n 2._o again_o it_o be_v of_o great_a advantage_n to_o we_o for_o first_o it_o rid_v we_o of_o many_o superstitious_a fear_n which_o other_o have_v whilst_o one_o while_o they_o suppose_v they_o shall_v do_v this_o other_o while_o the_o contrary_a and_o still_o imagine_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o they_o one_o way_n or_o other_o which_o beget_v most_o woeful_a superstitious_a fear_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o indeed_o i_o may_v say_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o superstition_n be_v the_o unclearness_n and_o confusion_n of_o mind_n as_o to_o the_o understanding_n the_o will_n of_o god_n one_o while_o over-rating_a thing_n and_o judge_v itself_o bind_v in_o thing_n wherein_o the_o lord_n have_v leave_v it_o free_a and_o then_o again_o imagine_v but_o both_o doubtful_o to_o please_v the_o lord_n in_o thing_n he_o do_v not_o regard_n second_o it_o reduce_v our_o whole_a work_n as_o it_o be_v within_o a_o narrow_a or_o small_a compass_n and_o yet_o not_o narrow_a than_o the_o lord_n allow_v for_o according_a to_o this_o advertisement_n concern_v the_o many_o thing_n that_o come_v before_o we_o as_o duty_n by_o way_n of_o consideration_n if_o we_o stand_v in_o a_o true_a and_o single_a resignation_n unto_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n or_o true_o aim_v thereat_o we_o may_v thus_o reason_n with_o our_o own_o heart_n either_o such_o a_o thing_n be_v make_v clear_a unto_o i_o from_o the_o lord_n by_o the_o manifestation_n of_o his_o holy_a life_n in_o my_o heart_n or_o after_o single_o wait_v upon_o he_o it_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o make_v clear_a unto_o i_o if_o the_o former_a than_o it_o be_v my_o work_n to_o do_v it_o and_o i_o must_v not_o forbear_v whatever_o trouble_n from_o the_o enemy_n without_o or_o within_o i_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o practice_n thereof_o if_o the_o latter_a i_o have_v nothing_o more_o to_o do_v with_o it_o at_o present_a but_o to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n if_o he_o shall_v afterward_o clear_v it_o up_o unto_o i_o and_o so_o i_o may_v let_v it_o alone_o with_o a_o quiet_a and_o peaceable_a conscience_n and_o thus_o you_o may_v see_v there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o do_v and_o forbear_v for_o unclearness_n of_o mind_n in_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v a_o ground_n for_o i_o to_o forbear_v it_o but_o i_o must_v not_o do_v any_o thing_n upon_o the_o ground_n of_o unclearness_n a_o three_o advantage_n be_v that_o thereby_o our_o mind_n be_v keep_v clear_a and_o pure_a and_o open_a even_o like_o a_o free_a and_o clear_a air_n which_o do_v with_o readiness_n receive_v the_o light_n that_o shine_v in_o it_o and_o every_o impression_n make_v in_o it_o thereby_o in_o question_n and_o debate_v among_o people_n in_o this_o day_n but_o now_o for_o the_o further_o open_v of_o this_o particular_a i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o add_v somewhat_o more_o as_o 1._o when_o i_o say_v do_v nothing_o doubtful_o i_o do_v not_o understand_v it_o so_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o to_o do_v a_o thing_n if_o there_o be_v any_o objection_n which_o thou_o find_v arise_v against_o it_o either_o from_o thy_o carnal_a reason_n or_o unbelieving_a part_n till_o thou_o get_v rid_v of_o they_o for_o notwithstanding_o they_o thou_o may_v find_v a_o good_a clearness_n in_o thy_o mind_n which_o shut_v they_o out_o or_o put_v they_o under_o and_o so_o thou_o may_v proceed_v upon_o thy_o clearness_n from_o the_o lord_n in_o thy_o mind_n notwithstanding_o these_o objection_n although_o thou_o can_v not_o give_v they_o any_o direct_a and_o positive_a answer_n but_o this_o that_o thou_o be_v clear_a of_o the_o lord_n to_o the_o contrary_a yet_o if_o the_o objection_n shall_v so_o far_o prevail_v as_o quite_o to_o cloud_v thy_o clearness_n so_o that_o thou_o lose_v sight_n of_o it_o this_o be_v indeed_o thy_o sin_n so_o to_o have_v permit_v they_o to_o do_v yet_o till_o thou_o get_v they_o in_o some_o measure_n remove_v and_o clearness_n in_o some_o measure_n be_v give_v thou_o from_o the_o lord_n thy_o safety_n be_v to_o forbear_v again_o whereas_o some_o wrong_a spirit_n may_v take_v a_o occasion_n from_o this_o unjust_o to_o shelter_v themselves_o under_o a_o cover_n in_o their_o omission_n and_o neglect_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o the_o lord_n require_v say_v they_o find_v not_o clearness_n to_o do_v they_o therefore_o i_o must_v add_v this_o also_o that_o if_o thy_o unclearness_n proceed_v from_o a_o wrong_n and_o deceitful_a part_n of_o thy_o heart_n which_o be_v unwilling_a to_o be_v clear_v because_o it_o be_v unwilling_a to_o obey_v it_o be_v another_o case_n for_o then_o thy_o forbearance_n be_v thy_o sin_n though_o thou_o be_v unclear_a because_o thou_o may_v have_v be_v clear_a have_v thou_o stand_v single_o and_o yet_o if_o thou_o do_v thing_n in_o this_o unclearness_n thou_o sin_v also_o thou_o may_v say_v then_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v for_o this_o be_v a_o strait_a â—â—se_n i_o answer_v come_v unto_o the_o light_n and_o turn_v to_o it_o in_o singleness_n and_o that_o will_v clear_v thou_o and_o so_o thou_o be_v to_o do_v they_o v._o be_v careful_a to_o keep_v thy_o heart_n and_o mind_n in_o a_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o at_o all_o time_n as_o much_o as_o be_v possible_a i_o know_v at_o first_o and_o for_o some_o time_n it_o will_v be_v hard_a for_o thou_o yea_o at_o time_n till_o thou_o witness_v a_o further_a growth_n and_o become_v more_o inward_o acquaint_v with_o the_o enemy_n work_n thou_o will_v as_o it_o be_v lose_v much_o what_o all_o and_o clear_v and_o distinct_a sense_n feel_v and_o discern_v of_o the_o life_n as_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o thou_o but_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o fit_a of_o a_o lethargy_n a_o faint_a or_o fall_v into_o a_o swarf_n for_o even_o the_o spiritual_a life_n suffer_v these_o thing_n at_o time_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v young_a and_o tender_a no_o less_o than_o the_o natural_a but_o now_o as_o one_o live_v in_o the_o natural_a life_n do_v what_o in_o he_o lie_v to_o be_v keep_v out_o of_o such_o fit_n which_o bereave_v he_o of_o the_o present_a use_n of_o his_o natural_a sense_n and_o do_v great_o desire_v always_o to_o have_v the_o free_a and_o lively_a use_n of_o his_o natural_a sense_n which_o be_v very_o needful_a unto_o he_o for_o his_o preservation_n from_o outward_a danger_n even_o so_o one_o who_o be_v come_v to_o live_v in_o the_o spiritual_a life_n and_o have_v once_o receive_v the_o power_n of_o of_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n whereby_o to_o hear_v see_v taste_n smell_v and_o feel_v heavenly_a object_n as_o also_o to_o have_v a_o sense_n of_o what_o hurt_v from_o the_o contrary_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o he_o will_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o preserve_v the_o free_a and_o lively_a exercise_n of_o they_o for_o they_o be_v give_v unto_o he_o both_o for_o his_o comfort_n and_o also_o to_o be_v help_n unto_o he_o whereby_o he_o may_v know_v thing_n good_a and_o evil_n profitable_a and_o hurtful_a unto_o his_o spiritual_a condition_n that_o so_o he_o may_v choose_v and_o embrace_v the_o good_a and_o refuâ—e_v the_o evil_n now_o if_o he_o run_v out_o from_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o always_o in_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o same_o and_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o this_o he_o shall_v the_o more_o ready_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o due_a and_o right_a use_n and_o observance_n of_o the_o former_a advertisement_n and_o those_o which_o yet_o remain_v to_o be_v mention_v this_o particular_a be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o doctrine_n that_o pass_v general_o among_o the_o professor_n who_o be_v teach_v to_o say_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o seek_v to_o live_v by_o sense_n but_o by_o faith_n allege_v the_o apostle_n word_n but_o this_o be_v a_o mere_a abuse_n of_o his_o word_n for_o he_o do_v not_o say_v we_o walk_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n but_o thus_o and_o not_o by_o sight_n whereas_o a_o man_n may_v have_v the_o exercise_n of_o divers_a other_o sense_n and_o yet_o at_o present_a have_v not_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o sight_n now_o there_o be_v divers_a other_o spiritual_a sense_n beside_o the_o sight_n whiâ—â—_n be_v the_o clear_a manifestation_n and_o it_o be_v true_a that_o many_o time_n the_o child_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n can_v believe_v when_o in_o some_o sort_n they_o do_v not_o see_v yet_o i_o altogether_o deny_v that_o any_o can_v believe_v without_o some_o inward_a spiritual_a sense_n or_o another_o whereby_o that_o which_o they_o shall_v believe_v be_v propose_v unto_o they_o objective_o for_o otherwise_o it_o be_v a_o groundless_a faith_n also_o by_o these_o work_n we_o walk_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n may_v be_v understand_v the_o outward_a sense_n or_o the_o inward_a which_o reside_v only_o in_o the_o low_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o natural_a and_o outward_a object_n by_o these_o we_o be_v not_o to_o walk_v nor_o expect_v to_o have_v the_o lord_n to_o propose_v himself_o unto_o we_o in_o order_n to_o satisfy_v we_o by_o our_o outward_a sense_n or_o by_o the_o inward_a sensible_a affection_n in_o the_o low_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o it_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o a_o christian_a life_n that_o give_v we_o to_o walk_v with_o god_n both_o confident_o and_o comfortable_o to_o follow_v he_o in_o the_o way_n of_o obedience_n when_o we_o have_v nothing_o from_o these_o inferior_a sense_n to_o help_v or_o encourage_v we_o but_o many_o time_n to_o the_o contrary_n and_o as_o for_o that_o which_o they_o call_v sensible_a devotion_n which_o some_o say_v we_o must_v not_o much_o seek_v after_o if_o by_o sensible_a devotion_n they_o understand_v that_o which_o only_o affect_v the_o inferior_a sensible_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n such_o as_o the_o fancy_n and_o imagination_n whereby_o the_o inferior_a affection_n of_o love_n joy_n fear_v grief_n etc._n etc._n be_v move_v and_o stir_v which_o can_v be_v doâ—e_n by_o some_o pathetic_a discourse_n or_o description_n of_o thing_n by_o a_o form_n of_o word_n i_o agree_v unto_o what_o they_o say_v but_o if_o by_o sensible_a devotion_n they_o understand_v that_o which_o move_v the_o very_a spirit_n and_o will_n of_o man_n with_o the_o supreme_a affection_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o upon_o its_o spiritual_a sense_n i_o say_v this_o devotion_n be_v most_o needful_a in_o some_o measure_n and_o be_v to_o be_v seek_v after_o by_o all_o for_o it_o be_v the_o high_a and_o noble_a kind_n of_o devotion_n and_o the_o most_o rational_a even_o that_o we_o have_v a_o real_a sense_n and_o feel_n upon_o our_o heart_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n of_o the_o only_a and_o true_a god_n when_o we_o worship_v he_o so_o as_o to_o be_v inward_o melt_v into_o a_o holy_a tenderness_n before_o he_o through_o what_o we_o feel_v and_o taste_v and_o savour_n of_o his_o divine_a power_n and_o goodness_n and_o if_o
the_o other_o part_n may_v be_v of_o the_o enemy_n yea_o the_o soul_n may_v begin_v to_o do_v something_o well_o and_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o end_v it_o in_o the_o flesh_n through_o its_o weakness_n and_o inadvertency_n nevertheless_o we_o must_v not_o conceive_v any_o such_o mixture_n possible_a as_o if_o what_o the_o lord_n do_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o what_o the_o soul_n do_v with_o he_o and_o by_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n can_v be_v corrupt_v and_o defile_v by_o the_o enemy_n nay_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v still_o pure_a so_o far_o as_o it_o go_v but_o now_o the_o soul_n give_v way_n to_o the_o enemy_n he_o enter_v and_o so_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o the_o lord_n work_n at_o that_o time_n but_o he_o can_v never_o defile_v or_o corrupt_v it_o and_o thus_o the_o lord_n part_n of_o the_o work_n be_v still_o his_o and_o the_o enemy_n have_v no_o share_n in_o it_o nor_o any_o influence_n upon_o it_o so_o as_o to_o defile_v it_o but_o he_o may_v stop_v it_o as_o the_o lord_n permit_v he_o and_o as_o the_o soul_n give_v he_o way_n so_o to_o do_v now_o one_o may_v ready_o object_n according_a to_o this_o it_o will_v seem_v that_o so_o long_o as_o sin_n have_v any_o life_n or_o power_n in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v as_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n kingdom_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o it_o to_o do_v any_o work_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o he_o from_o fiâ—st_n to_o last_o but_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v mar_v and_o stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o the_o very_a state_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o partly_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n have_v place_n therein_o and_o partly_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o that_o the_o work_n itself_o shall_v stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n also_o and_o that_o proportional_o according_a to_o the_o mixture_n of_o the_o soul_n own_o state_n and_o condition_n for_o while_o the_o soul_n be_v work_v that_o which_o be_v good_a by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n in_o and_o with_o the_o lord_n will_v the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n be_v idle_a and_o asleep_a or_o rather_o will_v they_o not_o work_v in_o opposition_n yea_o will_v not_o the_o devil_n move_v strong_o in_o they_o to_o resist_v and_o mar_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n answ._n this_o objection_n indeed_o do_v evince_n that_o the_o thing_n be_v somewhat_o difficult_a but_o not_o impossible_a it_o be_v true_a the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n do_v of_o their_o own_o nature_n incline_v to_o work_v in_o opposition_n to_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o satan_n will_v never_o be_v want_v as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v to_o move_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o but_o this_o answer_n it_o plain_o that_o as_o the_o soul_n turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o breath_n unto_o he_o through_o the_o power_n of_o his_o own_o life_n and_o spirit_n for_o preservation_n and_o continue_v thus_o inward_o turn_v and_o convert_v unto_o he_o in_o fear_n watchfulness_n and_o singleness_n the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n come_v over_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n yea_o and_o over_o the_o whole_a power_n of_o the_o enemy_n therein_o and_o do_v bind_v and_o captivate_v they_o that_o they_o can_v no_o more_o prevail_v to_o hinder_v the_o soul_n from_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o purity_n and_o perfection_n in_o a_o measure_n then_o if_o they_o have_v no_o such_o place_n in_o it_o even_o as_o in_o the_o outward_a if_o i_o be_v do_v a_o piece_n of_o work_n and_o some_o strong_a body_a man_n have_v a_o resolution_n to_o stop_v or_o mar_v i_o yet_o if_o a_o strong_a than_o he_o come_v and_o bind_v he_o up_o i_o may_v do_v the_o work_v complete_o maugre_o he_o he_o may_v fret_v and_o make_v a_o noise_n like_o a_o mad_a dog_n or_o lion_n upon_o a_o chain_n but_o he_o can_v do_v no_o more_o and_o true_o we_o have_v find_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o many_o time_n in_o our_o own_o experience_n that_o as_o we_o have_v keep_v diligent_a nigh_o unto_o the_o lord_n with_o our_o mind_n towards_o he_o in_o tender_a breathe_n and_o desire_n that_o we_o may_v be_v preserve_v we_o have_v find_v he_o chain_v as_o aforesaid_a but_o when_o we_o have_v but_o a_o little_a become_v remiss_a and_o suffer_v our_o mind_n to_o slide_v back_o from_o that_o diligence_n and_o watchfulness_n as_o be_v requisite_a than_o the_o lord_n suffer_v the_o enemy_n somewhat_o as_o it_o be_v to_o break_v loose_a upon_o we_o and_o use_v his_o strength_n in_o some_o measure_n against_o we_o to_o the_o end_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v stir_v up_o unto_o the_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o indeed_o many_o time_n we_o find_v it_o so_o with_o we_o in_o this_o matter_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o jew_n at_o the_o rebuild_n of_o the_o city_n who_o be_v so_o put_v to_o it_o that_o while_o they_o build_v with_o the_o one_o hand_n they_o behoove_v to_o fight_v against_o the_o adversary_n with_o the_o other_o thus_o you_o may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o time_n wherein_o sin_n and_o its_o power_n may_v be_v captivate_v before_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v and_o the_o strong_a man_n may_v be_v bind_v before_o he_o be_v utter_o cast_v out_o chap._n ix_o show_v how_o that_o though_o work_n can_v have_v no_o great_a influence_n upon_o the_o very_a first_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n that_o be_v only_o receive_v through_o a_o receptive_a faith_n yet_o they_o do_v great_o conduce_v unto_o the_o growth_n and_o continuance_n thereof_o also_o unto_o the_o kill_n and_o mortification_n of_o the_o sinful_a and_o unholy_a life_n with_o its_o power_n more_o and_o more_o till_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v where_o also_o the_o distinction_n of_o a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n viz._n receptive_a and_o operative_a be_v somewhat_o open_v work_v out_o your_o salvation_n say_v the_o apostle_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a it_o be_v observable_a he_o do_v not_o bid_v they_o begin_v their_o salvation_n with_o work_n but_o that_o they_o shall_v work_v it_o out_o or_o proceed_v in_o it_o through_o work_n which_o be_v a_o manifest_a proof_n that_o work_n have_v a_o great_a use_n and_o service_n promote_a and_o carry_v on_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n though_o they_o can_v begin_v it_o and_o concern_v the_o great_a use_n they_o have_v unto_o this_o effect_n paul_n the_o same_o apostle_n say_v again_o rom._n 8._o if_o you_o live_v after_o the_o flâ—sh_n you_o shall_v die_v but_o if_o you_o through_o the_o spirit_n do_v mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n you_o shall_v live_v wherein_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v plain_o imply_v 1._o that_o carnal_a and_o evil_a work_n that_o be_v a_o live_n after_o the_o flesh_n occasion_n death_n upon_o they_o who_o be_v come_v to_o some_o measure_n of_o spiritual_a life_n evil_a and_o unholy_a work_n be_v deadn_v and_o kill_v they_o be_v like_o a_o canker_n which_o eat_v out_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n 2._o that_o good_a and_o holy_a work_n serve_v not_o only_o to_o preserve_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n already_o attain_v but_o to_o increase_v and_o improve_v it_o and_o this_o same_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n do_v plain_o hold_v forth_o for_o he_o who_o receive_v but_o two_o talent_n yet_o improve_n the_o same_o and_o put_v they_o to_o use_v they_o become_v multiply_v into_o four_o so_o he_o who_o receive_v the_o five_o by_o use_v they_o gain_v other_o five_o many_o other_o scripture_n exaâ—mples_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o prove_v the_o trâ—â—â—_n of_o it_o but_o these_o shall_v at_o present_a suffice_v moreover_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o the_o thing_n do_v also_o demonstrate_v it_o for_o it_o be_v here_o the_o same_o as_o to_o the_o spiritual_a life_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a for_o the_o natural_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o become_v strong_a and_o strong_a the_o more_o it_o be_v upon_o motion_n and_o exercise_n as_o we_o see_v by_o daily_a experience_n but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o the_o natural_a life_n after_o it_o have_v come_v to_o its_o height_n do_v decay_n and_o even_o spend_v or_o consume_v itself_o in_o its_o motion_n or_o work_n for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temporary_a thing_n whereas_o the_o spiritual_a life_n be_v eternal_a and_o do_v never_o at_o any_o time_n decay_n or_o diminish_v through_o its_o work_n but_o be_v thereby_o perpetuate_v it_o be_v such_o a_o good_a plant_n that_o it_o ever_o grow_v and_o flourish_v and_o bring_v forth_o twelve_o manner_n of_o fruit_n every_o month_n where_o it_o be_v well_o occupy_v or_o improve_v and_o never_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n decay_v or_o wax_v barren_a
but_o the_o more_o abundant_a fruit_n it_o bring_v forth_o this_o month_n or_o year_n the_o yet_o more_o abundant_o it_o bring_v forth_o the_o next_o yea_o its_o life_n be_v so_o much_o in_o work_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n that_o if_o it_o be_v hinder_v in_o its_o moving_n and_o work_n it_o die_v even_o as_o the_o fire_n go_v out_o if_o it_o be_v stop_v from_o burn_a and_o the_o water_n die_v if_o it_o be_v keep_v from_o run_v beside_o the_o lord_n be_v so_o well_o please_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v diligent_a in_o good_a work_n through_o his_o own_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n that_o he_o do_v reward_v it_o with_o a_o further_a measure_n and_o take_v delight_n to_o water_v the_o soul_n that_o be_v fruitful_a therein_o the_o more_o abundant_o with_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n that_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o attain_v unto_o the_o first_o beginning_n or_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a life_n through_o faith_n and_o believe_v unto_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n 1._o receptive_a or_o receive_v 2._o operative_a or_o work_v now_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o attain_v unto_o the_o begin_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n through_o the_o property_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v opperative_a but_o through_o that_o which_o be_v receptive_a and_o lest_o any_o shall_v think_v this_o distinction_n too_o nice_a or_o subtle_a i_o shall_v prove_v it_o from_o the_o express_a word_n of_o scripture_n 1._o that_o faith_n be_v operative_a be_v clear_a from_o that_o scripture_n where_o it_o be_v say_v faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o where_o it_o be_v say_v to_o purify_v the_o heart_n and_o do_v a_o great_a many_o good_a thing_n in_o many_o other_o place_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v receptive_a i_o shall_v go_v no_o further_o then_o joh._n 1.12_o for_o proof_n to_o as_o many_o as_o receive_v he_o to_o they_o give_v he_o power_n to_o become_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o that_o this_o receive_v christ_n be_v a_o believe_v in_o he_o be_v plain_a from_o the_o word_n immediate_o follow_v even_o say_v he_o to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n so_o here_o be_v the_o receptive_a faith_n for_o receptive_a be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v in_o english_a receive_v nor_o be_v there_o many_o example_n want_v in_o natural_a thing_n to_o show_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v the_o receptive_a power_n when_o as_o yet_o it_o have_v not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o 1._o the_o needle_n of_o the_o compass_n must_v first_o receive_v its_o virtue_n from_o the_o load_n stone_n be_v touch_v with_o it_o before_o it_o can_v direct_v itself_o towards_o the_o pole_n 2._o the_o branch_n that_o be_v cutoff_a from_o its_o own_o natural_a stock_n and_o graft_v into_o another_o it_o first_o receive_v life_n and_o virtue_n from_o the_o stock_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o drink_v it_o in_o before_o it_o proceed_v to_o send_v forth_o either_o leaf_n or_o flourish_n or_o fruit_n 3._o the_o womb_n first_o receive_v seed_n before_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n in_o it_o proceed_v in_o their_o operation_n for_o its_o conception_n and_o formation_n 4._o the_o stomach_n first_o receive_v the_o meat_n into_o it_o before_o by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n therein_o it_o digest_v and_o turn_v it_o into_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n and_o indeed_o this_o last_o example_n do_v with_o great_a clearness_n hold_v forth_o the_o thing_n in_o hand_n for_o suppose_v now_o a_o man_n through_o hunger_n be_v even_o faint_a and_o as_o it_o be_v dead_a so_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o yet_o receive_v a_o little_a food_n the_o virtue_n of_o it_o do_v sudden_o revive_v he_o and_o give_v he_o natural_a strength_n whereby_o he_o may_v do_v and_o work_v as_o former_o and_o thus_o the_o soul_n receive_v and_o drink_v in_o that_o divine_a virtue_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o the_o divine_a seed_n be_v thereby_o quicken_v and_o strengthen_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o pertain_v unto_o a_o holy_a life_n in_o some_o measure_n all_o which_o example_n and_o many_o more_o which_o can_v be_v adduce_v prove_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v a_o receptive_a power_n and_o not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a and_o to_o this_o purpose_n these_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v observable_a he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o say_v he_o though_o he_o be_v dead_a yet_o shall_v he_o live_v which_o import_v that_o a_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v dead_a may_v believe_v that_o be_v to_o say_v receive_v the_o seed_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n into_o it_o for_o this_o divine_a principle_n be_v of_o a_o insinuate_a and_o penetrate_a nature_n it_o do_v make_v way_n for_o its_o own_o reception_n in_o the_o heart_n insinuate_a and_o as_o it_o be_v wind_v itself_o thereinto_o as_o the_o fire_n do_v into_o wood_n or_o any_o combustible_a matter_n but_o now_o when_o this_o principle_n do_v labour_n to_o work_v itself_o into_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o power_n the_o soul_n may_v resist_v and_o do_v so_o many_o time_n whereby_o it_o remain_v dead_a though_o otherwise_o it_o may_v have_v live_v by_o give_v way_n unto_o or_o receive_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o seed_n and_o thus_o that_o subtle_a objection_n may_v be_v answer_v which_o be_v thus_o believe_v or_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o can_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o soul_n that_o live_v a_o spiritual_a life_n for_o as_o a_o dead_a body_n can_v walk_v or_o move_v so_o nor_o can_v a_o dead_a soul_n believe_v from_o this_o it_o be_v infer_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v first_o live_v before_o it_o can_v believe_v or_o have_v faith_n and_o consequent_o that_o none_o other_o can_v have_v faith_n but_o they_o who_o be_v already_o partaker_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o believe_v while_o yet_o you_o grant_v all_o man_n be_v not_o spiritual_o alive_a but_o this_o be_v answer_v by_o the_o enable_v and_o assist_v after_o a_o supernatural_a manner_n by_o the_o lord_n also_o some_o may_v object_v this_o doctrine_n seem_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o seem_v to_o hold_v when_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o and_o that_o no_o man_n perish_v for_o want_v of_o power_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n answ._n there_o be_v no_o contrariety_n herein_o for_o when_o we_o say_v it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o we_o understand_v not_o this_o simple_o and_o absolute_o
but_o conditional_o to_o wit_n upon_o their_o believe_v for_o they_o who_o believe_v receive_v power_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n whereas_o the_o unbeliever_n want_v this_o power_n because_o of_o their_o unbelief_n and_o forasmuch_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o believe_v at_o such_o time_n when_o the_o lord_n do_v visit_v they_o and_o touch_v their_o heart_n by_o the_o gracious_a influence_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n therefore_o we_o do_v just_o say_v that_o all_o man_n may_v do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o restriction_n aforesaid_a chap._n x._o of_o the_o great_a influence_n that_o the_o come_v of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o outward_a in_o his_o birth_n life_n doctrine_n work_n suffering_n death_n resurrection_n ascension_n glorification_n etc._n etc._n have_v upon_o our_o mortification_n to_o sin_n and_o regeneration_n unto_o holiness_n even_o unto_o perfection_n and_o after_o what_o manner_n we_o shall_v improve_v the_o same_o effectual_o in_o order_n thereunto_o great_a and_o excellent_a be_v the_o benefit_n which_o do_v come_v upon_o man_n through_o the_o come_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n even_o in_o the_o outward_a but_o through_o a_o spirit_n of_o deceit_n and_o hypocrisy_n which_o have_v deep_o enter_v the_o most_o of_o professor_n and_o leaven_v they_o great_a and_o woeful_a be_v the_o abuse_n which_o they_o have_v put_v both_o upon_o his_o outward_a come_n and_o the_o benefit_n thereof_o while_o they_o do_v both_o grievous_o misunderstand_v and_o misapply_v the_o end_n of_o his_o come_n for_o whereas_o the_o main_a and_o principle_n end_v of_o his_o come_n be_v to_o reconcile_v man_n unto_o god_n and_o make_v peace_n betwixt_o they_o through_o his_o purge_v their_o conscience_n from_o dead_a work_n take_v away_o the_o sin_n and_o pollution_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o deface_v and_o blot_v out_o that_o unholy_a image_n of_o satan_n beget_v in_o they_o through_o unrighteousness_n and_o indue_a they_o with_o the_o heavenly_a and_o righteous_a image_n of_o god_n they_o on_o the_o contrary_n have_v suppose_v or_o dream_v that_o his_o end_n in_o come_v be_v to_o reconcile_v they_o to_o god_n and_o justify_v they_o while_o remain_v in_o their_o sin_n yea_o and_o so_o far_o they_o have_v proceed_v herein_o as_o to_o imagine_v that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o holiness_n at_o all_o for_o justification_n and_o reconciliation_n but_o only_o for_o make_v they_o meet_v for_o heaven_n as_o they_o term_v it_o whereby_o it_o will_v seem_v they_o suppose_v that_o whereas_o heaven_n can_v be_v at_o no_o peace_n with_o unholy_a man_n yet_o god_n can_v as_o if_o god_n be_v more_o reconcileable_a with_o iniquity_n than_o heaven_n be_v but_o sure_o neither_o according_a to_o the_o manner_n as_o follow_v i._o when_o man_n sin_v against_o god_n and_o become_v corrupt_a and_o unclean_a in_o his_o heart_n before_o he_o through_o transgession_n the_o peace_n betwixt_o god_n and_o he_o be_v break_v and_o so_o man_n who_o in_o his_o innocent_a state_n be_v justify_v and_o at_o peace_n with_o god_n now_o through_o his_o sin_n become_v unjustified_a and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n kindle_v against_o he_o both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n in_o great_a measure_n ii_o this_o wrath_n of_o god_n will_v have_v burn_v in_o such_o a_o violent_a and_o forcible_a manner_n have_v not_o he_o provide_v a_o way_n in_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o abate_v and_o qualify_v it_o that_o it_o will_v have_v sink_v man_n into_o endless_a sanctify_a unto_o god_n now_o though_o from_o the_o beginning_n he_o be_v not_o outward_o come_v nevertheless_o his_o purpose_n of_o come_v outward_o be_v from_o the_o beginning_n and_o also_o he_o have_v a_o certain_a foreknowledge_n and_o sense_n of_o what_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v and_o how_o he_o be_v to_o be_v deliver_v up_o
into_o the_o hand_n of_o sinner_n to_o be_v so_o deal_v with_o as_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v in_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n and_o according_a to_o this_o in_o a_o true_a sense_n it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o he_o bear_v the_o weight_n of_o his_o outward_a suffering_n in_o great_a measure_n from_o the_o very_a beginning_n as_o even_o among_o we_o man_n what_o we_o do_v certain_o foresee_v of_o suffering_n or_o trial_n to_o come_v upon_o we_o for_o the_o future_a do_v affect_v we_o with_o no_o less_o weight_n many_o time_n in_o the_o foresight_n of_o they_o then_o in_o their_o accomplishment_n yea_o sometime_o more_o as_o every_o one_o know_v by_o some_o experience_n and_o that_o he_o be_v give_v up_o and_o resign_v in_o the_o very_a beginning_n to_o come_v into_o the_o world_n outward_o and_o suffer_v those_o indignity_n and_o cruelty_n with_o many_o other_o deep_a trial_n be_v certain_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o a_o sweet_a smell_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v very_o acceptable_a and_o satisfactory_a unto_o he_o vi_o and_o thus_o according_a to_o the_o plain_a and_o genuine_a sense_n above_o mention_v obvious_a to_o the_o weak_a capacity_n we_o may_v true_o say_v that_o all_o the_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n which_o come_v upon_o man_n or_o have_v come_v upon_o they_o from_o the_o very_a beginning_n for_o either_o their_o justification_n or_o sanctification_n have_v a_o spiritual_a relation_n and_o respect_n unto_o jesus_n christ_n both_o in_o his_o inward_a and_o outward_a come_n and_o his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o both_o by_o which_o he_o give_v perfect_a obedience_n unto_o his_o father_n and_o thereby_o he_o have_v obtain_v the_o free_a gift_n to_o come_v upon_o all_o unto_o justification_n of_o life_n therefore_o we_o be_v not_o too_o nice_o to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o influence_n of_o his_o inward_a and_o outward_a come_n and_o the_o effect_n thereof_o but_o rather_o to_o take_v they_o conjunct_o as_o in_o a_o perfect_a conjunction_n have_v a_o perfect_a influence_n upon_o all_o mankind_n for_o their_o reconciliation_n and_o renovation_n unto_o god_n as_o obtain_v that_o measure_n of_o light_n and_o grace_n from_o god_n unto_o all_o and_o every_o one_o whereby_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o they_o in_o a_o day_n to_o be_v save_v vii_o and_o indeed_o we_o do_v very_o free_o and_o willing_o acknowledge_v mistake_n that_o christ_n have_v no_o be_v as_o man_n but_o at_o his_o come_n into_o the_o outward_a and_o consequent_o can_v not_o suffer_v which_o consequence_n behove_v to_o be_v admit_v if_o the_o ground_n on_o which_o it_o be_v build_v be_v true_a but_o it_o be_v utter_o false_a for_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a from_o the_o scripture_n testimony_n that_o he_o suffer_v all_o along_o by_o man_n iniquity_n as_o where_o it_o be_v say_v i_o be_o press_v under_o they_o etc._n etc._n amos_n 2.13_o and_o that_o he_o be_v the_o lamb_n slay_v from_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o world_n yea_o that_o in_o they_o long_o after_o it_o even_o as_o paul_n speak_v of_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n which_o remain_v to_o be_v accomplish_v in_o he_o for_o the_o seed_n which_o be_v christ_n according_a to_o his_o participation_n with_o the_o creature_n have_v be_v the_o same_o in_o all_o age_n and_o have_v have_v its_o suffering_n under_o by_z and_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n in_o they_o all_o for_o the_o remove_n and_o abolish_n of_o they_o this_o outward_a come_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o his_o conception_n birth_n life_n suffering_n death_n resurrection_n and_o ascension_n etc._n etc._n be_v one_o of_o the_o great_a and_o profound_a mystery_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o have_v a_o exceed_a much_o deep_a sense_n and_o consideration_n than_o most_o apprehend_v or_o than_o any_o can_v apprehend_v but_o as_o it_o be_v open_v unto_o they_o in_o the_o life_n light_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o therefore_o i_o do_v admonish_v and_o warn_v all_o yea_o i_o obtest_v they_o in_o the_o power_n and_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o they_o do_v not_o make_v any_o slight_a account_n of_o it_o or_o undervalue_v this_o great_a and_o glorious_a mystery_n that_o shall_v be_v the_o eternal_a object_n of_o the_o saint_n contemplation_n for_o which_o as_o among_o other_o thing_n they_o shall_v eternal_o adore_v and_o admire_v thereof_o and_o as_o the_o lord_n do_v work_v mighty_o in_o his_o own_o kingdom_n and_o place_n which_o he_o have_v gain_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o strong_o move_v the_o soul_n with_o its_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperate_v with_o he_o so_o the_o enemy_n work_v strong_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o also_o move_v the_o soul_n with_o its_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperat_a with_o he_o and_o thus_o the_o poor_a soul_n be_v set_v as_o betwixt_o two_o contrary_a stream_n the_o one_o seek_v to_o carry_v it_o one_o way_n and_o the_o other_o to_o carry_v it_o to_o the_o contrary_a and_o on_o this_o account_v it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n sometime_o obey_v the_o one_o and_o sometime_o the_o other_o sometime_o it_o be_v carry_v forward_o and_o sometime_o backward_o
