stubble_n stick_n or_o such_o like_a it_o bring_v they_o to_o ash_n and_o do_v make_v they_o as_o though_o they_o have_v not_o be_v at_o all_o second_o it_o do_v purge_v and_o purify_v those_o thing_n that_o can_v abide_v to_o be_v purge_v and_o this_o it_o do_v first_o by_o take_v away_o the_o superfluity_n of_o dross_n that_o have_v over_o cover_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v purge_v then_o by_o fyne_a the_o thing_n itself_o and_o by_o make_v it_o pure_a and_o pure_a three_o it_o give_v light_a even_o in_o the_o most_o dim_a &_o dark_a place_n and_o last_o of_o all_o it_o give_v heat_n and_o with_o all_o do_v as_o it_o be_v put_v life_n into_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v capable_a of_o life_n for_o while_o a_o man_n be_v freeze_v and_o starve_a for_o cold_a he_o be_v numbde_v and_o as_o it_o be_v without_o life_n but_o be_v broughtto_n the_o fire_n he_o be_v hâ—tt_n he_o be_v reviue_v he_o be_v cheer_v and_o then_o become_v active_a &_o nimble_a these_o be_v the_o property_n of_o fire_n and_o these_o do_v in_o some_o manner_n sort_n resemble_v and_o shadow_v out_o unto_o we_o the_o work_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o first_o of_o all_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n seize_v upon_o a_o man_n and_o enter_v into_o his_o soul_n than_o it_o begin_v to_o burn_v to_o waste_v and_o consume_v in_o he_o those_o thing_n that_o will_v be_v waste_v after_o this_o sort_n evil_a affection_n noisome_a lust_n &_o other_o stubble_n which_o be_v in_o man_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v consume_v and_o burn_v second_o it_o do_v purge_v we_o from_o gross_a sin_n and_o daily_o more_o and_o more_o do_v purify_v we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v a_o clean_a and_o holy_a vessel_n and_o temple_n for_o he_o to_o rest_n and_o dwell_v in_o three_o it_o be_v a_o shine_a lamp_n ever_o burn_v and_o continual_o give_v light_n unto_o we_o in_o that_o way_n which_o we_o have_v to_o walk_v and_o last_o it_o do_v set_v we_o on_o heat_n and_o inflame_v we_o with_o a_o zeal_n of_o god_n glory_n with_o a_o care_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o with_o a_o love_n of_o all_o mankind_n yea_o withal_o it_o put_v life_n and_o lust_n into_o we_o to_o walk_v in_o that_o good_a way_n which_o spirit_n and_o fire_n for_o which_o cause_n the_o spirit_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v compare_v unto_o fire_n nay_o it_o be_v sometime_o call_v fire_n for_o john_n say_v that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n shall_v baptise_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n &_o with_o fire_n that_o be_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v like_a unto_o the_o fire_n therefore_o as_o true_o and_o as_o certain_o as_o we_o may_v say_v that_o there_o be_v fire_n where_o we_o see_v straw_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n consume_v or_o gold_n and_o silver_n fine_o purge_v or_o great_a light_n in_o dark_a place_n or_o great_a heat_n in_o body_n that_o be_v numb_a before_n even_o so_o true_o we_o may_v say_v and_o so_o certain_o we_o may_v persuade_v ourselves_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o we_o when_o we_o see_v our_o coruption_n consume_v our_o soul_n purge_v from_o the_o dross_n of_o sin_n our_o heart_n enlighten_v and_o make_v hot_a in_o walk_v and_o work_v according_a to_o that_o light_n the_o second_o question_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v question_n whether_o that_o man_n which_o have_v once_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n may_v loose_v it_o and_o have_v it_o quench_v in_o he_o to_o this_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v to_o and_o work_v in_o diverse_a man_n diverselie_o in_o diverse_a measure_n therefore_o we_o must_v consider_v of_o the_o diverse_a work_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o then_o frame_v our_o answer_n according_o first_o then_o there_o be_v a_o light_a and_o lesser_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o that_o this_o inferior_a or_o lesser_a kind_n of_o work_v may_v be_v take_v away_o appear_v plainelye_o by_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o our_o savioure_n christ_n propound_v for_o there_o beside_o they_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n into_o good_a ground_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n some_o a_o hundred_o some_o thirty_o some_o sixty_o fold_n he_o do_v also_o make_v mention_n of_o some_o other_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o yet_o continue_v not_o and_o what_o have_v not_o these_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o yes_o doubtless_o for_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n yea_o they_o receive_v it_o glad_o &_o that_o which_o be_v more_o they_o believe_v that_o which_o they_o have_v receive_v behold_v then_o three_o fruit_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o these_o man_n and_o yet_o they_o continue_v not_o for_o they_o believe_v indeed_o but_o their_o faith_n be_v temporary_a it_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o after_o a_o time_n it_o vanish_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n depart_v from_o they_o for_o either_o the_o pleasure_n and_o profit_n of_o this_o life_n do_v draw_v out_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o dry_v they_o up_o or_o else_o the_o fiery_a heat_n of_o persecution_n do_v quite_o consume_v they_o more_o plain_a and_o notable_a for_o this_o purpose_n be_v that_o in_o the_o sixth_o to_o the_o hebrew_n for_o there_o the_o apostle_n faith_n that_o some_o may_v taste_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o thereby_o be_v make_v to_o taste_v of_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v enlighten_v to_o receive_v heavenly_a gift_n yea_o and_o to_o taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o what_o then_o sure_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o if_o such_o fall_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v be_v renew_v give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o even_o they_o which_o have_v receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o have_v be_v enlighten_v that_o have_v receive_v heavenly_a gift_n &_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v even_o such_o may_v fall_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v quench_v in_o such_o there_o be_v a_o second_o kind_n of_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o more_o thorough_a and_o effectual_a work_n which_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o from_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v it_o this_o the_o apostle_n peter_n describe_v when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o choose_a of_o god_n be_v beget_v again_o of_o the_o immortal_a seed_n of_o the_o word_n this_o be_v not_o a_o bare_a receive_n or_o a_o light_n taste_v of_o the_o word_n but_o it_o be_v a_o deep_a taste_n of_o the_o same_o whereby_o we_o be_v beget_v and_o bear_v again_o the_o apostle_n john_n set_v down_o a_o other_o note_n of_o it_o say_v that_o they_o that_o be_v thus_o bear_v again_o can_v sin_v that_o be_v they_o can_v make_v a_o occupation_n of_o sin_n they_o cannot_v fall_v flat_a away_o by_o sin_n and_o why_o even_o because_o the_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o even_o that_o seed_n wherewith_o they_o be_v beget_v to_o a_o lively_a hope_n of_o life_n even_o that_o seed_n do_v abide_v and_o will_v abide_v unto_o the_o end_n who_o so_o be_v beget_v again_o by_o this_o seed_n and_o have_v this_o seed_n abide_v in_o he_o the_o spirit_n have_v wrought_v that_o in_o he_o which_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v be_v spirit_n and_o life_n and_o in_o a_o other_o place_n he_o say_v that_o none_o shall_v take_v his_o sheep_n from_o he_o for_o the_o father_n be_v mighty_a than_o all_o and_o therefore_o in_o another_o place_n he_o say_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o elect_v shall_v be_v seduce_v thus_o than_o we_o see_v the_o question_n be_v answer_v namely_o that_o there_o be_v a_o inferior_a work_n which_o may_v be_v lose_v and_o a_o more_o effectual_a work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o from_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o this_o must_v not_o seem_v strange_a to_o we_o neither_o must_v we_o be_v offend_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v take_v some_o and_o leave_v other_o or_o that_o he_o shall_v begin_v in_o some_o and_o not_o bring_v his_o
instruction_n concern_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n the_o prophet_n by_o his_o own_o experience_n teach_v we_o that_o he_o can_v find_v no_o relief_n of_o his_o sickness_n until_o he_o have_v remember_v and_o make_v confession_n of_o his_o sin_n what_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o the_o prophet_n of_o god_n teach_v so_o wonderful_o by_o the_o word_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o see_v his_o sin_n before_o be_v it_o far_o from_o us._n rather_o let_v we_o know_v that_o he_o have_v not_o several_o and_o particular_o rip_v up_o his_o sin_n before_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o several_a confession_n of_o they_o which_o though_o the_o lord_n know_v far_o better_o than_o we_o ourselves_o yet_o such_o kind_n of_o sacrifice_n be_v most_o acceptable_a unto_o he_o now_o if_o in_o this_o trouble_n the_o person_n humble_v can_v not_o come_v to_o the_o particular_a sight_n of_o sin_n in_o themselves_o it_o be_v good_a to_o use_v the_o help_n of_o other_o unto_o who_o they_o may_v offer_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v gage_v and_o search_v and_o their_o life_n to_o be_v examine_v more_o deep_o by_o hear_v the_o several_a article_n of_o the_o law_n lay_v open_a before_o they_o whereby_o they_o may_v try_v the_o whole_a course_n of_o their_o action_n for_o as_o we_o say_v before_o the_o gross_a hypocrite_n will_v general_o complain_v of_o sin_n and_o yet_o deal_v with_o they_o in_o particular_a point_n of_o the_o particular_a precept_n and_o prove_v they_o in_o the_o apply_v of_o thing_n to_o be_v do_v or_o not_o do_v to_o their_o own_o conscience_n and_o we_o shall_v see_v many_o of_o these_o poor_a soul_n toss_v too_o and_o fro_o now_o float_v in_o joy_n now_o plunge_v in_o sorrow_n not_o able_a to_o distinguish_v one_o sin_n from_o another_o now_o when_o we_o shall_v see_v the_o wound_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o arise_v of_o any_o certain_a and_o know_a sin_n it_o be_v either_o for_o some_o sin_n already_o commit_v wherein_o we_o lie_v or_o else_o for_o some_o sin_n as_o yet_o not_o commit_v but_o whereunto_o we_o be_v tempt_v for_o the_o former_a it_o please_v god_n oftentimes_o to_o bring_v old_a sin_n to_o mind_n when_o we_o have_v not_o thorough_o repent_v of_o they_o before_o that_o so_o as_o it_o be_v represent_v they_o to_o we_o afresh_o we_o may_v fall_v into_o a_o more_o mislike_v of_o they_o and_o yet_o herein_o be_v not_o all_o to_o mislike_v ourselves_o for_o some_o particulars_n although_o it_o be_v good_a to_o be_v occupy_v about_o some_o especial_a sin_n for_o as_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o the_o avoid_v of_o hypocrisy_n to_o see_v sin_n general_o so_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o escheve_fw-mi the_o deceiveablenesse_n of_o the_o heart_n ever_o to_o be_v pore_v busy_o in_o one_o particular_a and_o to_o be_v forgetful_a of_o our_o great_a and_o general_a sin_n but_o let_v we_o learn_v by_o the_o particular_n to_o pass_v to_o the_o general_n when_o any_o such_o one_o sin_n then_o do_v pursue_v thou_o rest_v not_o only_o therein_o but_o say_v thus_o rather_o to_o thyself_o oh_o lord_n be_v this_o one_o sin_n so_o grievous_a and_o do_v my_o god_n punish_v this_o one_o sin_n so_o sorelie_o how_o great_a then_o shall_v be_v my_o punishment_n if_o thou_o shall_v o_o lord_n so_o deal_v with_o i_o for_o all_o my_o other_o sin_n let_v we_o labour_n to_o have_v a_o sense_n both_o of_o general_a and_o of_o particular_a sin_n lest_o in_o time_n our_o grief_n pass_v away_o without_o fruit_n while_o that_o not_o be_v displease_v as_o well_o with_o one_o sin_n as_o with_o another_o we_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o to_o deny_v god_n or_o to_o doubt_v of_o the_o trinity_n or_o to_o be_v move_v to_o murder_v advouterie_n or_o such_o like_a in_o which_o temptation_n he_o feel_v god_n spirit_n to_o cheek_n he_o for_o they_o so_o as_o he_o know_v not_o in_o this_o case_n what_o to_o do_v for_o that_o on_o the_o one_o side_n he_o dare_v not_o listen_v willing_o to_o these_o fearful_a and_o monstrous_a temptation_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o fear_v least_o in_o time_n by_o long_a suit_n he_o may_v fall_v into_o they_o or_o at_o the_o least_o for_o that_o he_o see_v not_o how_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o they_o i_o suppose_v these_o motion_n be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o be_v dispute_v with_o as_o we_o by_o they_o be_v to_o be_v provoke_v to_o more_o instant_a and_o extraordinary_a zeal_n of_o prayer_n sure_o these_o be_v dangerous_a temptation_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o to_o be_v keep_v close_o which_o our_o nature_n will_v easy_o incline_v unto_o but_o particular_o be_v to_o be_v confess_v of_o us._n for_o the_o devil_n will_v come_v sometime_o to_o thou_o to_o keep_v thou_o still_o in_o a_o general_a acknowledgeing_n of_o sin_n and_o urge_v thou_o man_n in_o awe_n religion_n be_v no_o such_o matter_n as_o man_n make_v it_o thus_o for_o fear_n of_o yield_v on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o for_o shame_n of_o disclose_v the_o tentation_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n many_o man_n have_v pine_v away_o &_o almost_o have_v be_v overcome_v by_o they_o if_o we_o shall_v disclose_v this_o say_v these_o man_n what_o will_v people_n say_v of_o we_o they_o will_v count_v we_o atheist_n they_o will_v think_v we_o the_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o world_n well_o for_o our_o instruction_n and_o consolation_n herein_o let_v we_o learn_v that_o these_o kind_n of_o tentation_n be_v either_o correction_n for_o some_o sin_n past_a or_o punishment_n for_o some_o sin_n present_a or_o forwarner_n of_o some_o sin_n to_o come_v we_o shall_v see_v many_o tempt_v to_o adultery_n who_o no_o doubt_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o commit_v it_o &_o yet_o because_o in_o their_o youth_n they_o have_v commit_v it_o and_o not_o repent_v of_o it_o it_o come_v to_o they_o again_o the_o like_a may_v be_v observe_v in_o theft_n in_o gluttony_n and_o in_o other_o tentation_n which_o be_v not_o so_o much_o send_v unto_o we_o present_o to_o overcome_v we_o as_o to_o put_v we_o in_o mind_n that_o some_o time_n heretofore_o we_o have_v be_v over_o come_v with_o they_o shall_v now_o repent_v for_o they_o soon_o time_n a_o man_n shall_v lie_v in_o some_o sin_n whereof_o when_o he_o will_v not_o be_v admonish_v neither_o by_o the_o public_a nor_o private_a mean_n and_o then_o some_o other_o strange_a tentation_n shall_v fall_v upon_o he_o differ_v from_o that_o wherein_o he_o present_o lie_v to_o admonish_v he_o of_o that_o other_o sin_n as_o when_o a_o worldling_n shall_v be_v tempt_v to_o adultery_n a_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v no_o desire_n to_o do_v stone_n to_o this_o swine_n oh_o how_o safe_a have_v it_o be_v to_o have_v deal_v more_o bitter_o and_o to_o have_v dwell_v more_o vehementlie_o on_o the_o conscience_n of_o this_o caitiff_n now_o to_o attain_v some_o discretion_n in_o cure_v this_o wound_a spirit_n we_o must_v learn_v wise_o to_o judge_v both_o of_o the_o person_n afflict_v and_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o affliction_n first_o we_o may_v note_v whether_o it_o be_v a_o man_n or_o a_o woman_n because_o we_o may_v urge_v more_o fearful_o the_o use_n of_o the_o law_n to_o a_o man_n as_o be_v the_o strong_a vessel_n and_o as_o satan_n know_v the_o woman_n to_o be_v most_o easy_a and_o frameable_a to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o at_o his_o first_o temptation_n so_o be_v he_o not_o ignorant_a that_o she_o be_v the_o weak_a party_n to_o sustain_v any_o temptation_n now_o then_o let_v we_o consider_v whether_o they_o that_o be_v thus_o humble_v have_v knowledge_n or_o no_o because_o if_o they_o have_v no_o knowledge_n they_o think_v trouble_v of_o mind_n to_o be_v so_o strange_a a_o thing_n as_o never_o any_o before_o have_v it_o if_o they_o have_v knowledge_n than_o satan_n be_v ready_a to_o accuse_v they_o of_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o though_o every_o sin_n do_v against_o knowledge_n be_v a_o sin_n of_o presumption_n further_o we_o be_v to_o inquire_v how_o strong_a or_o weak_a they_o be_v that_o if_o they_o be_v sore_o strike_v we_o cease_v to_o humble_v they_o any_o further_a if_o they_o be_v not_o sufficient_o wound_v then_o to_o touch_v they_o with_o some_o deep_a sense_n of_o sin_n also_o we_o must_v be_v circumspect_a to_o find_v out_o whether_o by_o nature_n they_o be_v more_o fearful_a &_o melancholy_a or_o no_o as_o also_o whether_o they_o be_v usual_a sinner_n or_o have_v fall_v once_o of_o infirmity_n that_o so_o upon_o their_o disposition_n &_o inclination_n we_o may_v build_v our_o speech_n the_o better_a to_o these_o it_o be_v good_a to_o add_v the_o consideration_n of_o the_o person_n age_n estate_n &_o ability_n as_o if_o the_o party_n be_v trouble_v for_o worldliness_n whether_o he_o be_v not_o a_o great_a householder_n if_o he_o complain_v of_o uncleanness_n whether_o he_o be_v not_o a_o young_a man_n &_o unmarried_a if_o he_o be_v humble_v with_o covetousness_n whether_o he_o be_v not_o old_a because_o diverse_a country_n calling_n age_n condition_n &_o estate_n of_o man_n have_v their_o diverse_a &_o peculiar_a sin_n which_o we_o must_v right_o discern_v howbeit_o of_o what_o sex_n soever_o they_o be_v man_n or_o woman_n of_o what_o complexion_n soever_o the_o be_v of_o what_o knowledge_n to_o discern_v sin_n of_o what_o degree_n of_o commit_v sin_n of_o what_o age_n authority_n wealth_n estate_n or_o condition_n soever_o they_o be_v it_o be_v good_a to_o mark_v that_o there_o be_v many_o who_o be_v more_o trouble_v for_o the_o vexation_n and_o disquietness_n of_o their_o mind_n be_v distemper_v then_o for_o the_o vileness_n and_o horriblenes_n of_o their_o sin_n commit_v who_o be_v wound_v more_o with_o the_o fear_n of_o shame_n with_o the_o fear_n of_o be_v mad_a or_o with_o the_o fear_n of_o run_v out_o of_o their_o wit_n than_o with_o the_o conscience_n of_o sin_n which_o thing_n if_o we_o find_v in_o they_o it_o be_v our_o part_n to_o travel_v with_o they_o that_o they_o make_v a_o less_o matter_n of_o the_o outward_a shame_n &_o more_o conscience_n of_o the_o inward_a sin_n neither_o must_v we_o here_o forget_v to_o make_v a_o distinction_n between_o our_o speech_n use_v to_o the_o humble_a in_o the_o very_a time_n of_o their_o extreme_a agony_n &_o burn_v a_o gue_z of_o their_o trouble_n &_o those_o speech_n which_o we_o use_v to_o they_o the_o fit_a be_v past_a because_o the_o one_o and_o former_a require_v more_o consolation_n and_o less_o exhortation_n the_o other_o and_o latter_a will_v have_v we_o more_o abundant_a in_o admonish_v and_o more_o spare_v in_o comfort_v when_o we_o may_v wise_o admonish_v they_o to_o beware_v of_o sin_n which_o so_o procure_v their_o own_o woe_n in_o this_o breathe_a time_n it_o be_v also_o expedient_a to_o exhort_v they_o that_o for_o some_o season_n until_o they_o shall_v find_v great_a power_n of_o regeneration_n they_o will_v tie_v themselves_o to_o some_o holy_a order_n and_o godly_a vow_n whereby_o they_o may_v either_o be_v further_v in_o mortify_v some_o special_a sin_n which_o for_o that_o they_o can_v find_v no_o power_n against_o it_o do_v most_o grieve_v they_o or_o strengthen_v in_o some_o special_a grace_n the_o want_n whereof_o do_v also_o wound_v they_o but_o before_o we_o launch_v deep_o into_o this_o sea_n of_o particular_a tentation_n and_o begin_v to_o find_v the_o dangerous_a passage_n of_o natural_a corruption_n and_o original_a sin_n the_o troublesome_a froth_n whereof_o do_v almost_o overwhelm_v many_o poor_a pilgrim_n it_o shall_v be_v good_a to_o give_v this_o caution_n that_o both_o in_o these_o and_o in_o the_o former_a trouble_n man_n will_v be_v still_o again_o admonish_v patient_o to_o bear_v with_o a_o wound_a spirit_n albeit_o it_o fall_v out_o so_o that_o they_o be_v somewhat_o pettish_a see_v the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v so_o favourable_o of_o they_o say_v a_o wound_a spirit_n who_o can_v bear_v and_o sure_o our_o practice_n in_o other_o thing_n by_o the_o law_n of_o equity_n may_v urge_v this_o at_o our_o hand_n for_o if_o man_n by_o the_o light_n of_o reason_n can_v see_v it_o to_o be_v a_o duty_n convenient_a not_o furious_o to_o control_v but_o meek_o to_o suffer_v and_o wise_o to_o put_v up_o the_o unaduised_a speech_n of_o a_o man_n distemper_v in_o brain_n by_o reason_n of_o some_o burn_a ague_n or_o such_o like_a violent_a and_o vehement_a sickness_n we_o may_v easy_o gather_v even_o by_o the_o same_o rule_n of_o reason_n not_o so_o severe_o to_o censure_v the_o impatient_a speech_n of_o he_o who_o by_o reason_n of_o some_o parch_a fever_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v disquiet_v in_o all_o part_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o have_v all_o the_o vein_n of_o his_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o spiritual_a agony_n vex_v wherefore_o both_o unsavoury_a for_o want_v of_o godly_a wisdom_n and_o uncharitable_a for_o want_v of_o christian_a love_n be_v their_o murmur_a obtrectation_n which_o say_v what_o be_v this_o the_o godly_a man_n be_v this_o he_o that_o be_v so_o trouble_v for_o his_o sin_n why_o see_v how_o pettish_a he_o be_v nothing_o can_v please_v he_o no_o body_n can_v satisfy_v he_o consider_v o_o man_n if_o thou_o can_v bear_v with_o a_o frail_a body_n that_o thou_o must_v much_o more_o bear_v with_o a_o frail_a mind_n consider_v o_o man_n that_o this_o his_o pettishnes_n do_v more_o wound_v he_o to_o the_o heart_n than_o any_o injury_n thou_o can_v press_v he_o with_o and_o therefore_o see_v he_o afflict_v his_o own_o soul_n for_o it_o thou_o need_v not_o add_v any_o thing_n to_o his_o affliction_n and_o to_o exasperate_v his_o grievous_a smart_n consider_v that_o it_o be_v a_o bless_a thing_n merciful_o to_o bethink_v we_o of_o the_o estate_n of_o the_o needy_a and_o that_o to_o rub_v a_o fresh_a wound_n &_o to_o strain_n a_o bleed_a sore_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o with_o job_n friend_n to_o bring_v a_o new_a torment_n where_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o it_o if_o the_o wise_a father_n do_v rather_o pity_v than_o rebuke_v his_o child_n when_o by_o reason_n of_o sickness_n the_o appetite_n be_v not_o easy_o please_v even_o so_o if_o we_o purpose_v to_o do_v any_o good_a with_o a_o afflict_a mind_n
start_v for_o the_o best_a we_o have_v reason_n to_o say_v for_o our_o self_n &_o courage_n to_o defend_v ourselves_o against_o all_o they_o that_o do_v deal_v with_o we_o but_o now_o the_o spirit_n draw_v we_o into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n it_o let_v we_o see_v that_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n and_o that_o our_o strength_n be_v weakness_n in_o respect_n of_o he_o then_o do_v our_o heart_n begin_v to_o fail_v we_o then_o do_v we_o lay_v our_o hand_n on_o our_o mouth_n and_o dare_v not_o answer_v nay_o then_o do_v we_o quick_o take_v up_o our_o cross_n because_o the_o lord_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n of_o the_o free_a mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n redeem_v from_o death_n deliver_v from_o hell_n and_o free_v from_o the_o fearful_a condemnation_n of_o the_o wicked_a the_o second_o be_v the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n which_o indeed_o pass_v all_o understanding_n while_o sin_n and_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n remain_v there_o be_v no_o peace_n nor_o rest_n no_o quietness_n to_o be_v find_v but_o fear_v within_o terror_n without_o and_o trouble_n on_o every_o side_n but_o when_o sin_n be_v once_o nail_v to_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n when_o and_o blood_n persuade_v we_o of_o it_o can_v any_o creature_n assure_v we_o how_o god_n be_v affect_v towards_o we_o no_o doubtless_o and_o therefore_o where_o this_o joy_n and_o peace_n be_v there_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o author_n and_o worker_n of_o the_o same_o for_o as_o no_o man_n know_v what_o be_v in_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n which_o be_v in_o he_o so_o none_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o must_v certify_v our_o hearre_n and_o spirit_n of_o the_o same_o but_o also_o apply_v and_o frame_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a then_o be_v his_o understanding_n inlyghten_v to_o see_v into_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n and_o into_o that_o great_a work_n of_o his_o redemption_n and_o into_o whatsoever_o concern_v the_o save_a health_n of_o his_o soul_n then_o be_v his_o judgement_n reform_v and_o he_o be_v make_v able_a to_o judge_v between_o false_a religion_n and_o true_a between_o the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o of_o the_o spirit_n between_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o displease_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n then_o be_v his_o affection_n in_o some_o good_a measure_n alter_v his_o desire_n be_v set_v not_o upon_o earthly_a but_o upon_o heavenly_a thing_n his_o joy_n be_v not_o in_o the_o earth_n but_o in_o the_o heaven_n his_o anger_n be_v waste_v and_o spend_v not_o upon_o his_o own_o privae_fw-la cause_n and_o quarrel_n but_o upon_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o upon_o whatsoever_o hinder_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o god_n this_o be_v the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o he_o thus_o he_o live_v that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n and_o thus_o he_o lead_v his_o life_n continual_o for_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o do_v live_v according_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o this_o have_v weakness_n join_v with_o it_o and_o man_n through_o frailty_n may_v soon_o fall_v and_o therefore_o their_o life_n be_v say_v to_o be_v hide_v in_o christ_n because_o in_o full_a and_o perfect_a manner_n it_o do_v not_o appear_v therefore_o if_o notwithstanding_o these_o frailty_n and_o fall_n we_o will_v know_v whether_o we_o still_o retain_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n we_o must_v search_v ourselves_o and_o try_v our_o heart_n by_o these_o rule_n first_o if_o when_o through_o frailty_n we_o have_v fall_v for_o who_o be_v he_o that_o fall_v not_o we_o will_v then_o know_v whether_o by_o our_o fall_n we_o have_v lose_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o let_v we_o see_v what_o like_v or_o mislykinge_v we_o have_v of_o sin_n for_o it_o after_o our_o fall_n we_o do_v hold_v our_o former_a hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o oftenner_a we_o fall_v the_o more_o thorough_a and_o deadly_a hatred_n we_o conceive_v against_o sin_n undoubted_o that_o frailty_n have_v not_o as_o yet_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o spirit_n second_o come_v and_o see_v how_o it_o stand_v with_o thy_o sorrow_n for_o so_o long_o as_o thy_o sorrow_n increase_v for_o thy_o sin_n it_o can_v be_v think_v that_o sin_n and_o the_o flesh_n have_v overcome_v and_o utter_o quench_v the_o spirit_n in_o thou_o three_o try_v thy_o care_n and_o if_o thou_o groan_v in_o a_o godly_a care_n both_o how_o thou_o may_v be_v able_a to_o wage_v battle_n against_o sin_n in_o the_o plain_a field_n and_o how_o thou_o may_v prevente_v sin_n in_o all_o his_o policy_n thou_o have_v a_o further_a assurance_n that_o sin_n although_o it_o be_v as_o great_a as_o goliath_n yet_o it_o have_v not_o hitherto_o prevail_v against_o thy_o poor_a and_o little_a david_n i_o say_v against_o those_o few_o and_o small_a grace_n which_o the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o thou_o but_o the_o last_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o that_o be_v this_o when_o thou_o be_v careful_a to_o redeem_v that_o which_o by_o thy_o fall_n thou_o have_v lose_v &_o have_v a_o care_n to_o run_v so_o much_o fast_a forward_o by_o how_o much_o more_o thou_o have_v be_v let_v by_o thy_o fall_n than_o it_o do_v appear_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o thou_o yea_o lively_a and_o mighty_a in_o operation_n and_o such_o as_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o the_o until_o the_o day_n of_o christ._n thus_o may_v we_o in_o some_o good_a and_o competent_a measure_n try_v and_o prove_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o for_o where_o these_o fruit_n be_v to_o be_v find_v there_o be_v also_o the_o spirit_n of_o god._n for_o further_a confirmation_n whereof_o we_o may_v note_v the_o manner_n of_o speech_n where_o he_o say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n we_o do_v common_o use_v to_o say_v the_o fire_n be_v quench_v when_o the_o light_n and_o heat_n thereof_o be_v take_v away_o and_o indeed_o nothing_o can_v proper_o be_v say_v to_o be_v quench_v but_o the_o fire_n now_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n he_o give_v we_o to_o understande_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o some_o respect_n like_o unto_o
lord_n will_v not_o take_v away_o his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o how_o can_v these_o two_o stand_v together_o first_o to_o pray_v that_o a_o new_a spirit_n may_v be_v create_v in_o he_o and_o then_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o sure_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v still_o in_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o but_o the_o grace_n &_o gracious_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v dead_a and_o go_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o they_o may_v be_v renew_v in_o he_o by_o this_o than_o we_o
