church_n great_a detriment_n it_o will_v not_o be_v impertinent_a to_o make_v enquiry_n after_o some_o sure_a way_n whereby_o a_o man_n may_v without_o mistake_n discern_v the_o one_o sort_n of_o question_n from_o the_o other_o this_o then_o be_v pass_v peradventure_o if_o
for_o every_o man_n to_o believe_v to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v be_v save_v viz._n that_o he_o acknowledge_v the_o one_o only_o true_a god_n and_o he_o who_o he_o have_v send_v jesus_n christ_n his_o son_n be_v make_v man_n and_o that_o he_o believe_v that_o god_n have_v raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a and_o that_o by_o his_o name_n he_o shall_v obtain_v salvation_n and_o that_o he_o place_v not_o his_o righteousness_n in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n but_o that_o he_o be_v very_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n whereby_o we_o can_v be_v save_v now_o let_v we_o make_v enquiry_n what_o other_o thing_n there_o be_v that_o be_v infer_v from_o these_o may_v be_v in_o like_a manner_n necessary_a to_o be_v know_v and_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o scripture_n teach_v that_o every_o man_n be_v liable_a to_o the_o severe_a judgement_n of_o god_n as_o be_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n bear_v in_o sin_n and_o of_o such_o a_o natural_a constitution_n that_o he_o continual_o offend_v god_n and_o consequent_o guilty_a of_o eternal_a punishment_n and_o since_o they_o further_o teach_v that_o this_o world_n at_o length_n come_v to_o a_o end_n all_o person_n shall_v be_v raise_v at_o the_o last_o day_n the_o just_a unto_o eternal_a happiness_n the_o unjust_a and_o wicked_a unto_o eternal_a torment_n no_o man_n can_v understand_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v save_v neither_o consequent_o what_o it_o be_v he_o shall_v believe_v unless_o he_o have_v some_o tolerable_a knowledge_n both_o of_o his_o own_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o of_o god_n purpose_n to_o judge_n the_o quick_a and_o the_o dead_a for_o the_o apostle_n declare_v that_o from_o the_o law_n spring_v the_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n and_o he_o shall_v not_o have_v know_v sin_n but_o by_o the_o law_n but_o it_o follow_v not_o from_o what_o we_o have_v lay_v down_o that_o such_o a_o degree_n of_o knowledge_n either_o of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n or_o of_o man_n natural_a condition_n be_v necessary_a as_o that_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v err_v in_o the_o interpretation_n of_o some_o commandment_n of_o god_n or_o in_o judge_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o the_o ability_n thereof_o he_o can_v be_v save_v thus_o much_o only_o follow_v that_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v liable_a to_o eternal_a condemnation_n christ_n be_v raise_v from_o the_o dead_a and_o it_o can_v be_v understand_v that_o any_o be_v raise_v to_o life_n that_o be_v not_o first_o dead_a it_o follow_v that_o it_o ought_v of_o necessity_n to_o be_v believe_v that_o he_o die_v in_o a_o word_n forasmuch_o as_o our_o lord_n have_v command_v that_o all_o be_v teach_v the_o gospel_n and_o baptize_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a spirit_n who_o work_n this_o faith_n be_v inasmuch_o as_o he_o open_v our_o heart_n and_o reveal_v unto_o we_o this_o goodness_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o both_o this_o command_n ought_v to_o be_v know_v and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o holy_a spirit_n by_o who_o we_o believe_v and_o by_o who_o god_n dwell_v in_o we_o and_o who_o we_o ought_v by_o incessant_a prayer_n to_o beg_v of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v bestow_v he_o upon_o we_o i_o confess_v ingenious_o i_o can_v find_v any_o other_o point_n that_o i_o can_v from_o scripture_n demonstrate_v and_o prove_v to_o be_v of_o necessary_a knowledge_n to_o the_o attainment_n of_o salvation_n if_o any_o man_n can_v show_v any_o more_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o i_o will_v soon_o wish_v then_o to_o understand_v what_o ever_o other_o point_n there_o be_v over_z and_o above_o what_o we_o have_v lay_v down_o and_o to_o hear_v those_o text_n by_o who_o authority_n we_o be_v oblige_v to_o acknowledge_v they_o for_o father_n be_v one_o person_n the_o son_n another_z but_o he_o say_v that_o he_o who_o be_v the_o father_n fill_v the_o womb_n of_o the_o virgin_n and_o in_o that_o man_n who_o he_o assume_v be_v term_v the_o son_n when_o as_o not_o two_o person_n but_o one_o father_n be_v understand_v by_o both_o term_n and_o he_o that_o thus_o understand_v the_o matter_n worship_v but_o one_o god_n some_o man_n may_v therefore_o inquire_v whether_o or_o no_o this_o point_n be_v of_o such_o concernment_n as_o that_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o he_o that_o will_v be_v save_v not_o to_o err_v therein_o that_o be_v to_o say_v whether_o sabellius_n hold_v such_o a_o error_n can_v be_v save_v or_o whether_o he_o ought_v absolute_o to_o be_v reckon_v for_o a_o heretic_n as_o hitherto_o he_o have_v be_v ever_o account_v we_o have_v already_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v believe_v that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n but_o to_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v not_o to_o pronounce_v these_o word_n nor_o yet_o in_o thought_n to_o give_v unto_o christ_n the_o title_n of_o son_n of_o god_n but_o rather_o by_o a_o sincere_a faith_n to_o attribute_v unto_o he_o that_o which_o these_o word_n signify_v now_o the_o word_n son_n signify_v not_o any_o such_o thing_n i_o say_v the_o notion_n of_o that_o word_n be_v not_o such_o as_o that_o any_o person_n may_v be_v understand_v to_o be_v his_o own_o son_n neither_o can_v the_o term_n father_n be_v so_o understand_v as_o that_o any_o one_o shall_v be_v his_o own_o father_n but_o he_o be_v call_v a_o son_n who_o have_v for_o father_n not_o himself_o but_o some_o other_o person_n and_o he_o a_o father_n who_o have_v for_o son_n not_o himself_o but_o some_o other_o forasmuch_o then_o as_o sabellius_n do_v confound_v the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o deny_v that_o they_o be_v two_o distinct_a person_n it_o be_v very_o plain_a that_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n which_o it_o be_v altogether_o necessary_a for_o he_o to_o believe_v by_o which_o example_n we_o be_v teach_v that_o concern_v such_o point_n as_o be_v propound_v unto_o we_o by_o god_n as_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v we_o ought_v diligent_o to_o examine_v what_o the_o word_n signify_v least_o retain_v only_o a_o certain_a vain_a shadow_n of_o word_n we_o come_v to_o deny_v the_o thing_n themselves_o by_o those_o word_n intimate_v let_v we_o labour_n to_o understand_v the_o word_n that_o we_o may_v sincere_o embrace_v the_o thing_n themselves_o have_v examine_v this_o tenet_n let_v we_o consider_v another_o point_n which_o as_o these_o time_n go_v be_v perhaps_o no_o less_o worthy_a of_o our_o knowledge_n there_o have_v be_v a_o long_a and_o very_o tragical_a controversy_n about_o the_o interpretation_n of_o those_o word_n take_v this_o be_v my_o body_n let_v we_o consider_v therefore_o whether_o this_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o such_o consequence_n that_o therefore_o
devil_n in_o respect_n of_o that_o seed_n from_o which_o their_o godliness_n and_o ungodliness_n spring_v be_v clear_a in_o as_o much_o as_o both_o the_o good_a and_o bad_a herb_n be_v say_v to_o have_v grow_v up_o after_o the_o sow_v of_o seed_n and_o because_o the_o servant_n wonder_v how_o the_o tare_n or_o cockle_n spring_v up_o since_o there_o be_v none_o but_o good_a seed_n sow_o &_o bad_a plant_n can_v not_o grow_v but_o from_o bad_a seed_n so_o that_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v that_o by_o the_o tare_n none_o but_o heretic_n can_v be_v understand_v the_o old_a law_n then_o will_v thou_o say_v and_o its_o reason_n be_v abrogate_a by_o this_o of_o our_o lord_n but_o what_o if_o notwithstanding_o all_o that_o have_v be_v say_v both_o law_n may_v be_v still_o in_o force_n and_o the_o latter_a derogate_a nothing_o from_o the_o former_a it_o will_v i_o suppose_v seem_v very_o strange_a but_o what_o if_o it_o may_v be_v so_o and_o what_o be_v there_o that_o may_v be_v allege_v why_o this_o exposition_n shall_v not_o be_v receive_v as_o true_a come_v on_o then_o let_v we_o examine_v whether_o this_o law_n may_v stand_v with_o that_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n though_o it_o forbid_v heretic_n to_o be_v kill_v now_o against_o who_o be_v the_o old_a law_n give_v very_o against_o such_o as_o either_o draw_v away_o other_o from_o the_o true_a god_n to_o worship_n idol_n or_o at_o least_o be_v seduce_v themselves_o have_v forsake_v he_o but_o we_o do_v not_o term_v such_o offender_n heretic_n but_o renegado_n &_o apostate_n there_o be_v in_o that_o law_n no_o mention_n of_o heretic_n but_o god_n will_v you_o say_v do_v as_o much_o abhor_v that_o worship_n which_o be_v not_o according_a to_o his_o own_o commandment_n as_o he_o do_v the_o worship_v of_o other_o god_n very_o well_o suppose_v it_o what_o will_v you_o infer_v do_v it_o thereby_o appear_v that_o the_o law_n which_o be_v make_v against_o apostate_n must_v be_v execute_v against_o heretic_n a_o heretic_n be_v not_o comprehend_v in_o the_o name_n or_o notion_n of_o a_o apostate_n neither_o be_v he_o mention_v in_o any_o other_o word_n of_o the_o law_n and_o if_o so_o be_v thou_o will_v needs_o draw_v the_o law_n to_o mean_v he_o that_o can_v thou_o not_o do_v from_o the_o proper_a force_n of_o the_o word_n but_o as_o lawyer_n speak_v by_o way_n of_o extension_n and_o large_a interpretation_n but_o it_o will_v first_o be_v know_v whether_o every_o law_n will_v admit_v of_o such_o extension_n and_o if_o not_o every_o one_o which_o may_v admit_v of_o they_o and_o wherefore_o or_o upon_o what_o ground_n and_o whether_o or_o no_o in_o this_o law_n those_o thing_n be_v find_v in_o regard_n of_o which_o a_o extension_n be_v to_o be_v make_v doubtless_o if_o thou_o shall_v accommodate_v the_o law_n to_o that_o which_o the_o word_n do_v not_o signify_v thou_o must_v do_v it_o only_o by_o a_o conjecture_n at_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o lawgiver_n but_o with_o what_o lawgiver_n be_v thou_o here_o to_o deal_v with_o such_o a_o one_o very_o as_o at_o who_o mind_n to_o guess_v be_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n so_o that_o all_o such_o conjecture_v can_v but_o be_v very_o doubtful_a and_o beside_o since_o there_o be_v extant_a a_o general_a law_n that_o forbid_v kill_v we_o shall_v not_o come_v to_o the_o shed_n of_o blood_n by_o the_o authority_n and_o warrant_n of_o a_o doubtful_a law_n but_o of_o one_o very_o clear_a and_o plain_a and_o all_o this_o difficulty_n will_v remain_v though_o we_o can_v perceive_v no_o difference_n between_o the_o case_n of_o a_o apostate_n and_o that_o of_o a_o heretic_n for_o we_o may_v just_o suspect_v that_o though_o we_o can_v not_o see_v it_o there_o may_v yet_o be_v a_o wide_a difference_n neither_o shall_v we_o run_v headlong_o to_o make_v a_o extension_n of_o a_o law_n to_o take_v away_o a_o man_n life_n but_o what_o if_o there_o be_v not_o want_v large_a difference_n by_o we_o discemable_a for_o a_o apostate_n do_v not_o only_o forsake_v the_o true_a worship_n of_o god_n but_o refuse_v to_o give_v any_o credit_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n with_o a_o heretic_n the_o authority_n thereof_o remain_v firm_a so_o that_o thou_o may_v find_v other_o weapon_n wherewith_o to_o vanquish_v a_o heretic_n beside_o stone_n and_o sword_n but_o other_o weapon_n wherewith_o to_o a_o apostate_n thou_o have_v none_o in_o which_o respect_n peradventure_o it_o be_v that_o god_n will_v by_o the_o most_o grievous_a punishment_n terrify_v a_o man_n from_o all_o thought_n of_o forsake_v his_o worship_n and_o deny_v to_o give_v credit_n to_o his_o word_n and_o will_v not_o however_o that_o a_o heretic_n shall_v be_v subject_a to_o like_a penalty_n hereunto_o may_v be_v add_v that_o the_o church_n reap_v no_o benefit_n by_o apostate_n but_o by_o heretic_n much_o especial_o in_o this_o particular_a that_o by_o mean_n of_o the_o godly_a be_v provoke_v more_o serious_o and_o diligent_o to_o search_v the_o scripture_n who_o will_v otherwise_o addict_v themselves_o to_o sloth_n and_o by_o degree_n become_v ignorant_a of_o all_o religion_n but_o this_o be_v of_o great_a weight_n that_o the_o magistrate_n can_v be_v so_o mistake_v as_o to_o conceive_v that_o a_o man_n apostatize_v from_o the_o true_a religion_n or_o solicit_v other_o to_o apostatise_v that_o do_v not_o so_o do_v whereas_o he_o that_o err_v not_o may_n easy_o seem_v to_o he_o to_o err_v or_o he_o that_o err_v but_o a_o little_a may_v easy_o seem_v to_o he_o to_o err_v very_o grievous_o which_o the_o many_o controversy_n even_o among_o the_o most_o learned_a wherewith_o the_o church_n be_v evermore_o exercise_v do_v plain_o prove_v now_o when_o i_o say_v the_o magistrate_n may_v err_v in_o such_o a_o case_n i_o put_v no_o fault_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o if_o it_o be_v not_o clear_a and_o true_a but_o in_o the_o magistrate_n himself_o in_o as_o much_o as_o he_o bring_v not_o such_o instruction_n nor_o such_o a_o spirit_n to_o the_o interpretation_n thereof_o as_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v for_o how_o few_o of_o these_o man_n that_o exercise_v the_o office_n of_o magistrate_n though_o they_o profess_v the_o gospel_n do_v study_v the_o scripture_n as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v how_o few_o of_o they_o be_v eminent_a for_o piety_n and_o prudence_n so_o that_o from_o they_o no_o other_o but_o a_o rash_a and_o injust_a judgement_n in_o a_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n be_v to_o be_v expect_v but_o you_o will_v say_v the_o question_n be_v not_o whether_o every_o magistrate_n have_v authority_n to_o proceed_v against_o such_o as_o he_o shall_v account_v for_o heretic_n but_o the_o question_n be_v of_o a_o true_o pious_a and_o prudent_a magistrate_n and_o of_o such_o as_o be_v heretic_n indeed_o i_o hear_v what_o you_o say_v but_o who_o be_v there_o bear_v the_o sword_n that_o will_v not_o be_v account_v godly_a and_o that_o will_v not_o account_v for_o a_o heretic_n whosoever_o thwart_v he_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n so_o that_o this_o will_v avoidable_o follow_v that_o look_v what_o authority_n you_o allow_v a_o pious_a magistrate_n against_o true_a heretic_n that_o will_v every_o magistrate_n usurp_v against_o every_o one_o that_o shall_v diffent_v from_o he_o be_v his_o judgement_n what_o it_o will_v be_v for_o as_o much_o therefore_o as_o we_o have_v show_v that_o we_o may_v not_o safe_o make_v a_o extension_n of_o the_o law_n though_o we_o can_v observe_v no_o difference_n between_o a_o apostate_n and_o a_o heretic_n what_o shall_v be_v do_v now_o we_o see_v so_o much_o difference_n it_o be_v clear_a therefore_o from_o the_o premise_n that_o the_o old_a law_n remain_v in_o force_n or_o that_o at_o least_o the_o like_a may_v be_v renew_v and_o yet_o heretic_n be_v not_o to_o be_v put_v to_o death_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o case_n of_o a_o heretic_n and_o the_o case_n of_o a_o apostate_n be_v different_a but_o some_o may_v demand_v whether_o or_o no_o it_o may_v then_o at_o least_o be_v just_a to_o proceed_v against_o a_o heretic_n when_o be_v command_v to_o be_v silent_a he_o shall_v notwithstanding_o go_v on_o to_o infect_v as_o many_o with_o his_o poison_n as_o he_o can_v a_o question_n of_o great_a concernment_n in_o the_o solution_n whereof_o to_o err_v will_v be_v of_o dangerous_a consequence_n on_o which_o side_n soever_o the_o error_n light_n for_o if_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o magistrate_n shall_v punish_v heretic_n that_o seduce_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o will_v make_v for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o church_n and_o for_o his_o own_o glory_n so_o that_o if_o the_o magistrate_n shall_v therein_o be_v negligent_a he_o will_v be_v liable_a to_o under-go_a severe_a punishment_n from_o
may_v descend_v into_o the_o list_n aga_fw-la n_v he_o arm_v with_o such_o kind_n of_o ammunition_n as_o he_o slight_v and_o contemn_v shall_v we_o therefore_o because_o satan_n labour_v with_o might_n and_o main_a to_o this_o effect_n and_o bring_v into_o the_o field_n the_o fit_a soldier_n for_o such_o a_o purpose_n shall_v we_o i_o say_v submit_v unto_o his_o will_n and_o cast_v away_o those_o weapon_n wherewith_o alone_o we_o may_v win_v the_o field_n shall_v we_o catch_v hold_v of_o such_o weapon_n wherewith_o we_o shall_v soon_o be_v put_v to_o the_o worse_o and_o which_o will_v be_v turn_v to_o our_o own_o throat_n nay_o but_o let_v we_o hold_v fast_o this_o weapon_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n let_v we_o fight_v with_o this_o alone_a herewith_o alone_o let_v we_o do_v our_o endeavour_n to_o slay_v satan_n himself_o and_o all_o his_o emissary_n let_v we_o endeavour_v to_o learn_v all_o the_o most_o convenient_a way_n of_o strike_v and_o ward_n with_o this_o weapon_n all_o the_o art_n of_o offence_n and_o defence_n of_o which_o matter_n we_o have_v already_o sufficient_o discourse_v and_o as_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n not_o appertain_v to_o the_o magistrate_n to_o make_v himself_o judge_n of_o doctrine_n and_o to_o use_v violence_n towards_o the_o teacher_n much_o less_o do_v it_o belong_v to_o he_o to_o use_v such_o violence_n at_o the_o discretion_n and_o upon_o the_o judgement_n of_o other_o as_o in_o case_n he_o shall_v commit_v the_o care_n of_o religion_n to_o certain_a person_n and_o be_v ready_a himself_o to_o draw_v the_o sword_n against_o whosoever_o they_o shall_v persuade_v he_o or_o shall_v arm_v they_o to_o the_o same_o effect_n how_o well_o he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o justify_v his_o so_o do_v to_o the_o king_n of_o king_n in_o that_o day_n which_o will_v be_v very_o terrible_a to_o the_o wicked_a and_o joyful_a to_o the_o godly_a we_o may_v thus_o judge_v suppose_v thou_o thyself_o be_v a_o king_n and_o to_o go_v into_o a_o he_o can_v choose_v himself_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n be_v busy_v about_o matter_n of_o the_o small_a concernment_n and_o when_o all_o be_v like_a to_o miscarry_v he_o shall_v suffer_v the_o same_o course_n to_o be_v continue_v when_o thou_o shall_v come_v home_o and_o take_v knowledge_n hereof_o can_v thou_o possible_o allow_v of_o the_o do_n of_o that_o servant_n of_o thou_o for_o though_o thou_o shall_v find_v all_o safe_a and_o well_o will_v thou_o not_o so_o account_v of_o that_o servant_n as_o if_o all_o thing_n have_v fall_v out_o cross_a and_o contrary_a but_o what_o if_o some_o very_a great_a damage_n some_o shameful_a miscarriage_n have_v happen_v of_o how_o great_a punishment_n will_v thou_o judge_v that_o servant_n to_o be_v worthy_a and_o be_v not_o the_o church_n of_o
